« Le Bal des Ardents »

Finished a seven pages summary of one of my favorite historic moment in French history « Le Bal des Ardents » ! It is set the 28 January 1389 .

Now some facts I couldn’t put in it !

Charles VI killed four men in a frenzy because he thought they were British soldier send to kill him ! They were in facts, only his close guard. The episode started after a man talked to him in the forest it all took place. He took 8 months to recover from this.

Strangely enough, even though « le Bal des Ardents » was a hugely traumatizing event, it is not the one that granted him his nickname « Le Fol » (the crazy ). It’s only 7 months after his mental health declined again without signs of improvements.

Infos kind of vary there but the event took place in the Hotel Saint-Pol OR the destructed and then reconstructed Hotel de la Reine Blanche.

Louis d’Orléans was 17 when it happened. People did think he did this to kill Charles VI and took the thrones. After the event he build the chapel « Le Couvent des Célestins » to expiate his crimes.

Showing the depth of the Eiffel Tower’s foundations. Construction began in 1887, designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923) the tower was finished in time for the 1889 Paris Exhibition.

Despite the 18,038 pieces of wrought iron, 2.5 million rivets used to build the 10,000 ton and 984.25 feet high man-made structure, only 300 workers were employed to build it (some reports even estimate it was only 200 workers).

Notice not a single hard hat. The tower was built as a symbol of modern science and engineering, and luckily, photography was in its infancy, or we wouldn’t have any documentation.

When the tower first opened, the elevators weren’t operational yet and the 30,000 visitors of the World’s Fair had to climb 1,710 steps to reach the top.

The Eiffel Tower wasn’t just a hollow tower with a great view. French newspaper Le Figaro opened a print office on the 2nd floor. There was also a post office for sending postcards.

Plus, a scientific lab. Gustave Eiffel in the experimental chamber of his aerodynamic laboratory,

And allegedly even a theater! As for the elusive theater, the photo dates to 1900, so it’s possible that it was temporarily erected for the Paris Exhibition, in what is today’s reception room on the 1st floor.

Gustave Eiffel was “the object of general envy.”

Looking inside his plush lookout “penthouse” at 290 meters (951′) above ground.

In Mr. Eiffel’s private apartment on the 4th floor, he entertained the likes of Thomas Edison. (I think this is a reenactment.)

Charles treated his young wife with tenderness. She was interested in music, dancing and writing. Luisa and Charles had 7 children: John III, Claude, Philip, Ramiro, Ferdinand, Joana, Charles.

Charlotte(1516 - 1570). Queen of Portugal. Wife of Juan III and mother of 6 children: José I, Manuel, Isabella, Sancho, Aldegunda, Mary. Charlotte devoted much time to the education of her children and the enlightenment of the Portuguese court. She was the favorite sister of Francis II and maintained a close relationship with his wife.

Francis II(1518 - 1590). King of France. Husband of Mary Tudor. Francis loved his wife. Unlike his father and brothers, he never had mistresses or children out of wedlock. The reign of Francis II was an era of prosperity and rise. Father of 8 children: Claude, Francis III, Catherine, Charlotte, Tristan, Raoul, Adele, Henry.

Henry(1519 - 1587). Duke of Orleans. Husband of Catherine de Medici and father of 10 children: Francis, Elizabeth, Claude, Louis, Charles, Henry, Margaret, Hercule, Victoria and Jeanne. All his life loved only his mistress Diana de Poitiers, even wanted to marry her, but because of pressure from his father did not do it.

Правление Франциска II было эпохой процветания и подъёма. Отец 8 детей: Клод, Франциск III, Екатерина, Шарлотта, Тристан, Рауль, Адель, Генрих.

Генрих(1519 - 1587). Герцог Орлеанский. Муж Екатерины Медичи и отец 10 детей: Франциск, Елизавета, Клод, Людовик, Карл, Генрих, Маргарита, Эркюль, Виктория и Жанна. Всю жизнь любил только свою любовницу Диану де Пуатье, даже хотел на ней жениться, но из-за давления отца не стал этого делать.

Are there any Napoleon or history enthusiasts here who can help me find a topic for my 14-page term paper? Is there a topic concerning Napoleon (his reign, career, wars, etc.) that you find particularly interesting and on which I could write an interesting question and thesis? It must not be too broad, but should be enough to be able to write 14 pages about it as a first-year student.

Madeleine(1520 - 1583). Queen of Scots. Wife of James V and mother of 9 children: Kenneth IV, Duncan III, Mary, Malcolm, Margaret, Donald, Francis, Claude and Annabel. Madeleine and Jacob's marriage, was a happy one. Was very devout, patronized the church and helped the poor.

Charles(1522 - 1597). Duke of Angouleme. Husband of Anne of Austria. The married life of Anne and Charles was not happy. In marriage 5 children were born: Francis, Etienne, Gerard, Claude and Anne. In 1545 he took part in hostilities against the English and contracted the plague in a military camp, the king feared for the life of his son, but soon the Duke went on the mend. Charles was an ardent lover of literature. His personal library was considered the largest in Europe.

Margaret(1523 - 1593). Empress of the Holy Roman Empire. Wife of Maximilian II and mother of 7 children: Anne, Helena, Franz I, Mary, Matthias, Wenzel and Barbara. Margaret and Maximilian had a happy marriage. She was charitable, and because of this she won the love of her subjects. She was considered the most educated woman of her time

Putting this comment on here because I feel like I’m actually going insane…

It seems like nobody in the comments even watched the video, complaining about how paying for content is difficult in this economy, like, that's why they are doing this! They cannot continue to make the content they want for free based on ads and sponsors alone. If you have paid attention to the "Making Watcher"s of recent years, their company is not, and has not been profitable. They are so dependent on advertisers for funding that it is becoming a restriction to the content they want to make (y'a know, like Buzzfeed was), so they had to find a solution. I don't know why you all seem to think you are entitled to free content, I understand not everyone can afford it but Watcher doesn't owe you content personally. Frankly, I doubt they wanted to put their content behind a paywall, but if it's that or not make content at all, of course they are going to try to find a solution. So no, they aren't "turning into Buzzfeed” because the massive problem with Buzzfeed was its restrictions on creative freedom and exploitation of its workers. If Watcher wants to produce fulfilling content that gives their editors, designers, producers, etc full creative freedom and a livable wage, this is the best option. If you want them to pay their workers the bare minimum and tailor their content to advertiser interests just so you can watch it for free, that's fine. Just don't pretend that they are some evil media mega-corporation and you are the anti-capitalist shining hero for saying it. You don't have to like it, and you don't have to continue to support them, but don't try to shame and demonize them for making an already difficult decision.

Many of you DO have an understanding of the difficult position our current economic system puts people in because you have experienced it, but you are so unable to extend that understanding beyond your own point of view. Look past yourself for a moment and think critically, and maybe you will understand their perspective. Much love for all of the talented people within Watcher who are doing their best.

And just to add, their format going forward is almost IDENTICAL to CollegeHumor-Dropout's streaming service format (even down to the free premieres and advocating for sharing accounts with friends), which most people praise to high heaven as "the only ethical streaming service." As a huge fan of both companies the stark difference in response here is actually astounding...
