what did you mean when you said Chris is canonically antisemitic? /nm just wondering

in the book chris is looking over the ballots to see who's up for prom king and queen, and she reads over two people n says one won't win because she's "a jew"

passage quoted below:

"No one was to see the actual King and Queen ballot until Friday, when the whole student body would hear the candidates (...) [Chris] stared at the ballot with greedy intensity.

George and Frieda. No way. Frieda Jason was a Jew."

so far that's the only instance ive found where chris says something disparaging about jewish people bc i havent finished the book yet (im getting there, unfortunately im super slow at reading nowadays </3 ) but it's not very surprising with who's chris's father is, it's the 70s, etc.

i know it seems like not much but it's such a passing statement that she's obviously been worse just as nonchalantly- plus she's Chris Hargensen™ n she's always been portrayed to be nasty towards pretty much everyone.

Edit 7: Patient who works in a fish and chip shop says he took the “Chippocratic Oath”. Sacha asks him how long he’s been planning that joke for. He says “since I stumbled into the building”. Iconic.

Edit 8: Haha. Roxanna, to Meena, on John: “Don’t worry. He’s very focused. He won’t even notice you’re not there.”

Edit 9: I miss comedy patient storylines. I miss patient storylines in general.

Edit 10: Nicky and Meena arguing about whether to get Gaskell for a neuro consult. Nicky makes a remark calling Gaskell “a flipping Disney princess”. John and Rox walk in at that exact moment. The comedy in this ep is absolutely 10/10.

Edit 11: Rox on John: “He can be very quick to criticise, but he can also be quick to praise.” Textbook BPD. Why did they give John all these BPD traits and then villainise him for them.

Also, it’s really nice to get to see John do actual competent doctor stuff and not just “look at me I’m crazy and evil” stuff.

Edit 12: I love Frieda.

Edit 13: Zav being homophobic. Yikes. Thank god he grew out of that nonsense.

Also, Lofty saying “I don’t feel the need to give myself any label”. CRINGE. Say what you like about Casualty’s LGBTQ+ rep (and there is a lot to say tbf) but at least Jez was allowed to call himself bi. Did Holby ever have a single character who identified themselves as bi? I can’t think of one. Not liking labels is valid but when you start using it as an excuse to avoid the word “bisexual” (whereas you have characters like Dom gleefully saying they’re gay every other episode - not a criticism of Dom, I loved that about him)... yikes.

Edit 14: Meena and Nicky still girlfriends.

Edit 16: Is the shirt Sacha’s wearing here the same one he wore in The Perfect Storm or am I imagining things? It’s a good shirt.

Edit 22: Ooh. Did they ever explain WTF this was supposed to be about? Rox telling John she’s “just worried [he’s] getting tunnel vision, where [he] can’t see or hear anybody else’s concerns...” and John replying “I’m a changed man, Rox.”

Edit 23: Meena and Nicky were so gay.

Edit 24: Really weird actually, thinking about it, how Meena and Nicky’s friendship was such a big deal in that first year and then once Meena left I don’t think Nicky ever mentioned her again.

Edit 25: Nicky having dreams about her young self pretending to be a doctor again... now, pretending to tell friends of a patient about donating the patient’s organs. In hindsight of both Zav and Jac... OOF.

Holby City S20 E49 - Love Is

I kid you not, I have been dreading this episode.  And you know what?  It was a thousand times worse than I’d even imagined.

For anyone who was interested in a balanced review, I’m sorry.  Frieda has a temporary dog, yay.  Lofty didn’t stand Dom up at the altar, but called off the wedding anyway because he sensibly realised it was a bit too soon, ok.  Jason is panicking because all around him marriages and relationships fail - logical.  Xav and Donna are loved up - more fool Donna, because he’ll trash her feelings at some point.  There.  Other stuff covered?  Good.  On to the rant.

Oh.  My.  Goodness.  Just when we thought we were dealing with a couple of kisses which were Serena cheating on Bernie - we get an on call room scene.  I’m assuming everyone else is working on the same theory as I am, as to exactly what went on there.  So, then, probably very slightly afterwards, as in my opinion Serena still had kissed-lips, Bernie shows up.  I can’t even tell you how much I cringed when she kissed Serena.  All I could think was, Serena hadn’t even washed her face yet - and was thereby kissing Bernie with Leah lips.  I felt physically nauseated.

I found it interesting that early in the episode, there was an apparent attempt to justify Serena’s behaviour by having her state that she hadn’t heard from Bernie for 3 weeks apart from apologetic texts, despite constant missed calls and voicemails.  And then later, in her conversation with Jason about divorce, she stated that cheating could be avoided by more honesty and more communication - another attempt to justify her behaviour.  Now, I’m sorry, I know Bernie has an offbeat way of going about things sometimes, but 3 weeks, whilst perhaps worrying, is hardly a long time, and if Serena can’t keep it in her pants for 3 measly weeks of uncertainty, then she sure as hell isn’t the person we all thought she was. 

And I look at Bernie, and I look at Leah, and I think, why would Serena throw a lifetime away with this wonderful, flawed, beautiful nuanced woman, for some shallow, yet slightly firmer piece of ass?  She has been turned into her ex husband, for gods sake.  I could almost see it more if it had been an older, interesting woman, but Leah?  Seriously?  Yeah, ok, be flattered, but beyond that...  I just can’t even speak, I’m so disappointed,

I think the situation was so well played, Bernie was so affectionate, not just with Serena, but just so lovely with everyone.  And the head tilts, and the little kiss she blew when Serena left the office for the surgery...  my heart was practically leaping out of my chest, I just adore that woman so.  So, by making her more likeable and social than ever, it heightened the betrayal.  Not that it needed heightening, in my opinion.  I was quite devastated enough.

And as for the final scene, when Bernie told Serena she was abandoning her ‘dream job’ (as per her chat with Fletch), to come back to Serena, that just fair broke my heart.  I just can’t even. 

I know I’m sounding pretty down on Serena at the moment - but that’s because I am.  She has been, for the last 6 years, an incredibly awesome character, with flaws, sure - but strong values and morals, and through all her storylines she has shown a consistency of character.  I’ve adored her from the first moment she appeared on my screen.  Bernie of course has been much more recent in the Holbyverse, and on the surface of it, much more flawed.  But although I’ve loved Serena longer, I do love Bernie more, and of the two, Bernie has (through lack of opportunity?) stayed truer to character.  I don’t recognise the Serena we’re seeing at the moment.  I still recognised her through her grief at losing Elinor, and her terrible treatment of those around her - but in this, it’s just a step too far.  A diversion from character too marked for me to accept.

So, now we have a week of disappointment and hurt to wait, before we get properly stabbed through the chest.  Yay.

Cast list for 22nd of May (My thoughts) No Jac of course but I think we’ll probably have to wait until the summer for her to return, I expect she’ll be back around the beginning of June (so not too long I hope) Frieda is back! (hallelujah!) However I have a feeling it might be her last episode as I have a horrible feeling she’s going to leave with Roman as there is that clip from the trailer and Olga Fedori has been travelling since around the beginning of March (please don’t leave!) Another person absent is Sydney, now I know she was only meant to be in one episode so it makes sense. However with the recent spoiler info about Fletch sleeping with someone, this does kind of mean it’s probably not Sydney meaning it’s more than likely going to be Abigail. NOT HAPPY! It’s going to create all kinds of awkward tension between Flac when Jac returns and make it even harder for them to FINALLY get together! (Seriously guys, cut it out and let Flac be happy!) Also, Phillip Martin Brown is in the episode! Grantly Budgen giving me all kinds of throwback feels. Grantly, Sian and Jez from Waterloo Road in one episode! Also, I’m assuming this is where Greta has the baby, Jason as a dad is going to be so cute! Grandma Serena is going to be so adorable! (I know she’s not technically Grandmother but you know she’ll love that kid like it is!) Still want Jac back, I need my ginger haired queen back (only a few more weeks left I hope!) NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of one of the Final Dress Rehearsals. Top notch production and thrilling performances from Alice, Keaton, and the whole cast! This is quite a unique capture since it was the first time the blood was dropped. Too many amazing things to point out here, don't miss this one!!! A+ Well filmed with a nice mix of close-ups and full stage shots and no obstructions. Based on the revised Off-Broadway version, and presented at the Balagan Theatre. Because this was recorded at the final run-through prior to opening night, there are a few “holds” as they worked out any kinks: * After “Evening Prayers” there is a hold to change all microphone batteries, resulting in most of the song being run a second time (the sound check was removed and put as a bonus at the end of act two). * During the scene where Carrie is getting ready for the prom a microphone made a "farting" noise and Alice grabbed her butt and said "sorry" which made the cast and tech crew laugh.

This has been incorrectly labelled as an authorized production,which is incorrect - this was an unauthorized production (e.g., no rights were secured before the production), though Gore (and Cohen) were in the audience of this performance and chose not to sue Jeff Murphy and Stagedoor over copyright infringement, partly because Gore said he had always wanted to see the show done with actual teenagers (reported by Jeff Murphy, the director).

We start at the scene before "Half Breed" and when Stephanie tells everyone to stand up for the finale it's all over for my filming ability.

NOTES: As far as I know, the first ever video of the Toronto production! I had the entire show in VOB format ready to post but, unfortunately, I lost the USB it was on in the middle of an airport. Luckily I was able to salvage all but thirty minutes of the original footage, so all that's lost is part of the scene after "I Am Here" and a portion of "Somewhere In The Middle Of Nowhere". If you find a USB the size of a thumbnail around Pearson, it's a $5 reward! A flu passed around the cast that they were all just recovering from, and at one point you can see Bev take a tissue out of her pilot's jacket and blow her nose. It explains the large number of understudies on, particularly of interest is that of the role of Hannah being played by a Caucasian actress, which causes her absence for the bus scene and leads to a severely different dynamic I'd not seen the character played as before.

Watching “No Matter Where You Go, There You Are” part one tonight. Wish me good luck, everyone, I’m watching an episode I haven’t seen since 2018, that alternates between flashbacks and the present day, with a complicated plot... all while having a headache.

Edit: Trial lady talking about Ric’s “poor leadership, lack of communication, and arrogance”. I think you need to look a bit higher up in the hospital to find the person who really has those issues...

Edit 2: Jac: “You’re a stubborn fool.” Ollie: “Takes one to know one.”

Also, I love when we get to see John wear jackets or coats. We barely saw his fashion taste outside of suits really.

Edit 3: ��What the hell is Hanssen thinking?” I feel that, Ric.

Edit 4: The prosecutor asking about whether Ric regularly leaves the ward to question the CEO’s decisions. Buddy, everyone on Holby leaves the ward to question the CEO’s decisions on a regular basis.

Edit 5: Screaming with laughter @ this: Fletch: “Frieda said you want me?” Jac: “No.” Fletch: “To talk.”

Also, Fletch asks Jac for drinks after work. Frieda refers to this as him asking her out on a date. Remember - Frieda asked Jac for drinks only a few episodes earlier...

Edit 6: Wait hang on the prosecutor was played by Stirling Gallacher?!?! AKA Ffion?!?! How did I not recognise her until my mom pointed it out?!?! (Prosopagnosia, that would be why.)

Edit 7: This episode repeatedly cutting back to Serena just sitting there looking worried is inexplicably really funny to me.

Edit 8: Roxanna’s outfit in this episode is horrendously ugly. All Roxanna’s outfits are gorgeous or ugly lmao, there’s no in between.

Also, queer Jac joke of sorts: Jac says she’s gonna do a TOE on Ollie’s physiotherapist Becky, the following conversation follows:

Becky: It’s a date!

Jac: Date?

Becky: The TOE thingy.

Frieda: Ms. Naylor doesn’t do dates.

Becky: Bit young to have taken yourself off the market, aren’t you, Jackie?

Edit 8: Lmao @ Ollie asking how Frieda knew he was struggling to get up the stairs and her saying: “I’ve got my spies.”

Also, Jac taking cues from Henrik and accidentally looming up on Fletch! Lolll.

Edit 9: I love the Frieda/Ollie relationship.

Edit 10: I need a reaction gif of Ric angrily going “HANSSEN!”.

Edit 11: I shall try to refrain from making a dirty joke about Frieda calling Jac “O Dark Mistress”.

Edit 12: Jac is like Henrik in the sense that she gets some damn good lines when she’s angry and repressing her emotions. “[Oliver] never loved you before, he’s not going to start now! It doesn’t matter how much brain damage he suffers.”

Edit 13: OH MY GOD Ollie getting himself discharged and saying to Roxanna: “I’ll be back, as a surgeon. Sooner than you think. You’ll see.” RIP Roxanna, you would’ve loved Oliver coming back as a surgeon in 2021.

Edit 14: What the fuck even are these Jac and Fletch scenes.

Edit 15: Did they ever follow up on the thing about Ric’s daughter? I feel like they didn’t and that’s weird to me.

Edit 16: I HATE JASON I HATE HIM I HATE HIM. He’s so fucking annoying.

Edit 17: OH. Jac’s line when Becky asks her why she quit physio and went back to work so soon: “I had to work. I had to have purpose, and pain was the price.”

Edit 18: “I’m not John Gaskell, and I can’t perform miracles.” Neither can John, as it turns out, Roxanna.

Edit 19: Ooh. Jac threatening to get Frieda in trouble if she tells anyone about Jac’s self-medicating. Has ‘Henrik threatening to fire Josh if he tells anyone about Henrik’s self-harming’ vibes.

Edit 20: “No matter where you go, there you are.” Title drop!

Edit 21: Why was Sacha never involved in this self-medication plot? Why did they shove Fletch into it instead?

Edit 22: Ooh, the Jac and Ollie argument scene, here we go!!

Edit 23: GAH. Jac: “I’m sorry.” Ollie: “Are you? Will it stop you next time?” Jac: “...I don’t know.”

Edit 24: HENRIK, FINALLY!!

Edit 25: “Ric Griffin is the NHS.” That tracks, given the show stopped being a show about the NHS within only the last couple of years before he left, and they also started neglecting his character then.

Edit 26: “We deal in empathy, and yet we reserve so little of it for ourselves.” Very telling line from Henrik there.

Also - “if [Ric] is guilty of gross negligence, then so am I... aren’t we all?” Henrik, my darling, I love you, but you actually kind of are guilty of gross negligence given the amount of stuff you’ve let go down (Gaskell in particular).

Anyway, the last scene of this episode always makes me laugh because it was such an anticlimax. They really just revealed Ric was deemed not guilty casually at the start of the next episode and it was barely even a plot point.
