chekhov's sword in ofmd

as we all know, in “the art of fuckery,” there’s this opening scene with ed and stede sword fighting. it’s goofy and fun and has some great moments. but what i love most about it is how cleanly it foreshadows the end of the episode. 

so, spoilers, i guess.

ed teaches stede a couple things here: 

how to stab someone

the correct way to be stabbed (left side)

and how to “act or die”

now, what’s great about this scene is that it is so obviously here to foreshadow something. it’s so obvious. screenwriting 101. and in some shows, that would be seen as a bad thing... how dare the audience be able to interpret the subtext and context of our scenes correctly? how dare they engage critically with media?

so when izzy challenges stede fucking bonnet to a fucking duel, it makes sense with the flow of the episode. it’s resolving an arc that this opening scene started. because stede: 

makes the choice to act

and gets stabbed (left side), breaking izzy’s sword

therefore winning the duel

and the audience gets to feel like a part of this! because we saw stede’s growth and followed it throughout the arc! it’s such a satisfying use of foreshadowing in a narrative!

EDIT: If you're still having problems, it might help to switch from "Save/Save as" to "Export (as a) Single Layer". Just. Make SURE the box labeled "Expression Color" is set to RGB. I've been messing with this all day, and it looks like this combination of settings will allow exported PNGs to maintain their colors perfectly. To you. So far both Discord and Toyhouse still only display desaturated images and I cannot for the life of me figure out why
