Musical Extravaganza

Yesterday me and my cinematic partner in crime took the opportunity to get tickets for a special evening of "Musical Extravaganza" in our small local arthouse movie theater.

They were screening 2 classic "musical-ish" pieces. So for the interested people out there, if you're always keen on watching stuff both for the eyes and ears, I will share my experience under the cut.

Phantom of the Paradise

What a ride!!!

I, resp. we, absolutely L❤️VED it!!!

When I read "Brian de Palma", I was surprised, since I only know his later work, mostly Thrillers and Gangster movies.

This early work, however, is something...well...completely different, to put it mildly.

It's a wild mix of "Phantom of the Opera" with a liitle bit of "Dorian Gray" towards the end.

Everything in a wild 70s setting with awesome costumes and sets.

The music is brilliant and the whole staging is completely crazy with all actors being comitted to the bit.

I can absolutely recommend this one!!!

Ok. The euphoria of the first movie quickly subsided the longer the second one lasted, I am afraid.

Walter Hill is in my book known for rather hard actioners in the 80s and 90s and, honestly, besides of some music scenes in this one, it is really more an action movie, than a musical - and not a particularly good one at that.

The acting is really B movie quality. I really like what has become of young Diane Lane over the years, but this was not one of her proudest moments. The did good lip-sync on the singing scenes, but did not actually sing.

Michal Paré. One can clearly see, why he stayed a b-movie actor and never made it to the A list of that era. Apart from his handsome looks he basically switched between two facial expressions: stoic staring and wounded staring. His dialogs sounded like that voice announcing the next stop in trains and busses.

Rick Moranis was ok. Less geeky than usual but not really challenged by the meh script.

The only positive appearance was actually done by Amy Madigan.

She played the chummy ex-army gal with enough ease and made the best of her part.

The music was nothing special and sometimes a too wild mix of genres. Besides the opener, nothing really remained in my memory. Sad, since I normally like Ry Cooder's work. I guess he got better with age.

So, in sum, not really a recommendation. Neither as a musical, nor as an action movie.

Been dancing around making this blog for a while now, but finally managed to pull the trigger! I'm a late 20's tomboy/soft butch leaning geeky gal that enjoys video games, cosplay, reading, and other such things. And I really like how I am now! Maybe that will be enough to satiate it, or maybe it'll backfire and only further embolden it! Hard to know for sure, but that's a risk I'll just have to take. Or maybe someone will come along and just take my indecision out of the equation all together ;)

Ok folks, now that I am going to the comic con Saturday, wanna lend me a hand picking out a t-shirt? I could only dig out four of my "geeky" shirts. (I hate my stuff being packed away.)

I thought I'd go with this one at first, since as a little girl I wanted to grow up and be Kitty, but there is a draw back. The shirt is fitted style, which means, with my big boobs and having gained a little weight in the years since I bought it, it is a little tighter than I usually wear clothes. Oh it fits by most folks standards, but I'm more of a loose clothes kinda gal.

On the plus side, I am a huge Doctor Who fan. I do actually enjoy this era of the show, even if it isn't my absolute favorite. It also reminds me fondly of a moment when I was standing next to a calendar photo of River Song, and Mom gasped that I looked like her (probably just the hair and clothes). But I dunno. It fits like a sack.

The plus is it's Henson related. Last year I wore my Pigs in Space shirt (which I have misplaced), so it would be nice for a Henson fangirl like me to make it a tradition. But the truth is I was hoping to find my Dark Crystal shirt, since I prefer that movie. ( Look, I like Labyrinth, but I adore The Dark Crystal. So sue me!) The image is smaller, meaning more staring at my chest to read it. The colors are more muted than I'd like, and it also fits like a sack. Still...cute.

It's amusing, and I do have a soft spot for Loki. But it almost feels like false advertising of "me" since I am not that big a Marvel fan. I've enjoyed most the movies, but not being able to keep up with the movies/shows anymore hasn't upset me too much. The image is busy, with so much going on. And it's so darn green, a much brighter green than this photo shows. The color alone would draw eyes. Finally, it's soooo huge it goes half way down to my knees!

So I did a little research on Azores and found this blog called Geeky Explorer by an Azorean named Bruno. A wealth of information, you should check it out.

What I learned is that Azores has a pretty temperate climate, never really getting colder than 10°C (50°F) in winter. Having said that, it does rain a lot, with the most rain falling November to February. It gradually tapers off month by month until the driest months (July, August) then gradually rains more and more each month as we head back into winter.

For people who love the beach and swimming in the ocean, the best time to go is August, as it's not only hot but the ocean is warmer by then. July and September are also excellent beach-going months.

I, however, hate the beach. Suntanning is boring and I can't swim, and I'm not a huge fan of sand getting into my everything. Plus wearing a bathing suit means I have to shave all the unmentionables.

Is there anything to do in Azores besides hang out at the beach, though? Turns out there is! There's whale watching! There are 10 species of whale and dolphin that are commonly sighted throughout the year, plus many more that could potentially be seen if you're really lucky. Some species hang around all year, but others only show up for a couple of months. Prime whale watching season is end of March until July.

Another thing to do in Azores is to soak in thermal baths. I love thermal baths. Thermal baths, being thermal, are best enjoyed when the weather is cooler (i.e. not July and August).

So it looks like I'm a shoulder season kind of gal.

As luck would have it, there are low-cost flights still available from Toronto to Ponta Delgada at the end of March. I'm going to hypothetically book a flight!

The cheapest flight actually makes a stop at Terceira, which is one of the other islands. There's a layover of over 5 hours, which makes the entire flight a whopping 12 hours long! So I thought, if the plane is stopping in Terceira anyway, why not just book a flight to Terceira and continue on to Ponta Delgada from there?

The flight leaves YYZ in the evening and arrives TER in the morning. So you just fall asleep on the plane and you're in Azores before you know it!

This flight departs Tuesday, March 28 and arrives Wednesday, March 29.

Look at this. The price of the ticket is actually only $96.50! The rest of the $341 is taxes and "charges".

You get one 23kg (50 lb) luggage and one 8kg (17 lb) carry-on included in the price.

I've pretend booked it ✌️ We're going to Azores, baby!

Maybe I should learn a bit of Portuguese before we leave 🤔

I believe I'm very goofy, charismatic, funny, playful, and a very, VERY energetic person always ready for an adventure! I'm childlike and I become bored easily. Normally I'm happy and cheerful! But I'm also very sensitive, I feel angry often. When the group is bored or sad, I feel like it's always my fault. I’m geeky and playful, but very impacient and stubborn sometimes. I seem very boyish and a little clumsy. I accidentaly hurt myself a lot.

I love drawing! I draw on the walls of my room, in my hands and arms and at class all the time. All my notebooks are full of drawings. It’s rare to find notes from school subjects on them actually.
