X-Men 97 episode 6 *SPOILERS*
Shi'ar Empire/Space
Honestly, I wasn't expecting to see them and get an update on Xavier in this episode cause I thought this was gonna be the full Lifedeath conclusion, so more focus on Storm. But, I think it's nice to see how he's doing.
This is the first time we see Deathbird AKA Lilandra's sister in the X-Men animated series, and I like her look.
Gladiator is such a stoic bad@$$. Ngl, after seeing him fight after so long, Superman popped into my head. I think it was the powerset he displayed.
Ronan and the Kree! I wasn't expecting to see them cause we never had the Kree mentioned or shown in the previous show, so this was a nice surprise. Aldo, it's so refreshing to see Ronan the Accuser in his more comic- accurate outfit. Cause, I've only recently seen him and the Kree in their MCU outfits, so seeing the classics was nice.
Noticed Vulcan during the beginning....kinda awkward cause he's Scott's other brother. Dunno if they'll do anything with that, but then again, they didn't do much with Havok in the previous show.
It's good to see Xavier healthy again, but why hasn't he checked up on the X-Men during that year? Why didn't he let them know that he's okay? Is it because of that black hole?
Didn't know Xavier was interested in being Lilandra's....pet....psychics be kinky.
Xavier talking about Magnus....oh god, when he finds out what happened to him....
Man, even in space, mutants can't catch a break! Xavier gonna be emperor along with Lilandra, and these sunsofbeeches hate it cause he's Terran AND a mutant. Like, can the mutants EVER get anything nice?!
Xavier was willing to forgo his memories on Earth and of his friends and family. Just to be with Lilandra....god dammit, this show really is a soap opera.
Xavier educating the Shi'ar council, Deathbird, Gladiator, and even Lilandra on their system and why it's bad was pretty funny. Dude was going back to being a teacher. And, I thought he was succeeding until....
The vision. Now, he knows what happened to Genosha, and he gotta go back. Good, cause they need him more than ever. I just wish it didn't have to break him and Lilandra up. Like, can we have a good relationship that doesn't end in a breakup, death, or have way too much drama, please?!?!
GAMBIT!!! 😭 It still hurts! But, the vision could also be foreshadowing that he'll become Death of the Four Horsemen. And Magneto wasn't there, so does that mean he survived?!
Storm, Forge, and the Adversary
Storm called Forge "my love". She was mad at him earlier, but I guess despite the anger, she loves him too and understood that he tried to help her despite what he did.
The Adversary is spooky. I didn't get how they appeared, but from what the show says, the demon appears to feed on the self-loathing, so they sensed Forge AND Storm and came to them.
Storm's fear of tight spaces comes into play. The Adversary used her fear against her which almost worked. First time Forge was able to banish the demon, despite being poisoned, and the second time, Storm overcame her fears and doubts and got her powers back.
Oh yeah, MISTRESS OF THE ELEMENTS IS BACK!!! 🤩 She even got her iconic black outfit with the tiara! I'll miss her classic white outfit, though. And she got her long hair back! No offense to the mohawk.
Shoutout to @stormandforge for talking about how she got her powers back cause I was so confused and sleep-deprived. What makes the most sense was the machine Forge used worked. It's just that she had some kind of mental/psychological block going on with her powers and had to overcome it to reactivate them. Kinda like how Peter lost his powers in Spider-Man 2. As for how she got her outfit, well, Storm, in the very first episode in the previous show, used her lightning to change outfits. So, I chopped it off to that. Yeah, lightning doesn't work like that, but she looks beautiful! The hair was actually what I was most confused about cause she had a mohawk, and suddenly, her hair got long again? I thought some parts of her head was shaved. So how did her change? Same way as the outfit?
Forge is cured, so fingers crossed these two will be together and not end poorly and messy as it did in the comics. Please, I just need one good relationship in this freaking show that isn't gonna end in tragedy.
And she knows about Genosha. God, I really hope she doesn't get survivors guilt over this. But, we need her and Xavier more than ever with what's to come.
The rest
Y'know, it was one thing for Trask to be involved with the massacre, but Mr. Sinister? I wasn't expecting that. I thought it was the FoH or Apocalypse or maybe Nimrod. Either way, I'm mad now that I know who's responsible cause how dare them kill Gambit, Magneto, Leech and the others, and hurt Nightcrawler and Rogue! I really hope that they find a way to finish him off for good and make it hurt like hell!
NIGHTCRAWLER GOT TO BE PART OF THE INTRO!!! 🤩 Does that mean he's gonna be finally part of the X-Men? Will we ever get him using his swords? Cause they keep teasing that!
I just wish it wasn't at the expense of Magneto and Gambit's intros. Man, I was bracing myself, and they had to do that and the recap! UGH, IT STILL HURTS! 😭
The episodes have really alternated with multiple storylines in this show. The previous one usually focuses on one story at a time.
So, that's pretty much it. Good episode. One more episode left until even more trauma will be inflicted on us cause 8-10 are gonna be a doozy.

Magneto: A Biographical Timeline, 1963-1991
Tumblr media
Magneto just might be one of the most iconic comic book antagonists of all time. He was created in 1963 by Stan Lee and started out as the X-Men’s deadliest foe. Not much is revealed about Magneto through the 60’s but when author Chris Claremont takes over writing the X-Men starting in 1975 he began to develop the character and give him a complex backstory. Magneto quickly started his journey to being a hero and by the 80’s he was no longer a foe of the X-Men, but an ally, and eventually the leader of the Xavier Institute. After corporate meddling forced Magneto back into an antagonistic role in the 90’s, Magneto was eventually killed off and Claremont was fired. This was the end of a cohesive story and trajectory for the character.
Magneto’s backstory has become murky in the years since. The wiki pages (both fan wikis and wikipedia) often take the angle of attempting to synthesize everything ever said about the character into one cohesive story. That, of course, isn’t very helpful when there’s been sixty years of contradictory information and continual reboots – both hard and soft – of the character, his relationships and his backstory. Even his name has come to be muddled with every few years someone deciding to give him a new one. Below, I’ve compiled a list of all the relevant biographical details as they appeared in print from 1963 – 1991. This is a comprehensive overview of the character during his most iconic storylines, many of which have gone on to be adapted to both television and film.
I have included links to relevant historical information at various points as well as to an excellent 2018 documentary, available on YouTube so be sure to check that out as well.

Charles thinks that “Magneto and I are uncomfortably alike.”
October
Uncanny X-Men (1963) #150 “I, Magneto” by Chris Claremont
Magneto learns of Jean Grey’s death and says that he grieves for her. He states “I know… something of grief. Search throughout my homeland, you will find none who bear my name. Mine was a large family, and it was slaughtered.”
Magneto speaks to the crew of the Soviet submarine Leningrad in Russian.
Magneto keeps his computer programming book written in a language neither Kitty nor Storm (Ororo Munroe) can read.
Later, after a fateful confrontation with the X-Men, Magneto thinks he’s killed Kitty Pryde. He is gripped with remorse saying “What have I done?!” and “Why did you not understand? Magda – my beloved wife – did not understand. When she saw me use my powers, she ran from me in terror. It did not matter that I was defending her… that I was avenging our murdered daughter. I swore then that I would not rest ‘til I had created a world where my kind – mutants – could live free and safe and unafraid. Where such as you, little one could be happy. Instead I have slain you. I remember my own childhood – the gas chambers as Auschwitz, the guards joking as they herded my family to their death. As our lives were nothing to them, so human lives became nothing to me.” (This is the first time Anya is mentioned even if she is not yet named, as well as the first time that Magneto is mentioned to be a Holocaust and Auschwitz survivor.)
Storm tells Magneto to pray to his deity as she intends to kill him for hurting Kitty. Magneto replies “As a boy, I believed. As a boy, I turned my back on God forever.”
When Storm suggests that his good dreams have been corrupted, Magneto insists that he is too old to change and has lived with his hatred too long.
Afterward, Charles offers that Magneto “Will emerge from this crucible the good man he once was and may yet be again.”

Uncanny X-Men (1963) #161 “Gold Rush” by Chris Claremont
The narrative tells us the following took place twenty years ago placing these events around 1962.
Charles recalls meeting Magneto long ago in Israel when he went there to help treat Holocaust survivors.
Magneto is a volunteer at the hospital where Charles is working.
Magneto is introduced as Magnus, no last name is given.
Magneto reveals that he grew up in Auschwitz and states that “I have no family, Dr. Xavier. Anymore.”
The Auschwitz prisoner number tattooed on Magneto’s arm is revealed to be 214782.
The doctor Charles is working with says most of the volunteers were concentration camp survivors who “bring a degree of empathy to their work that the rest of us can’t match.”
Charles and Magneto grow close during their time together despite different views on the future of humans and mutants.
They also become close with Charles’ patient, Gaby Haller who is suffering severe psychic trauma from her experiences during the Holocaust.
Charles eventually comes to realize that “in many ways, Magnus has been as deeply scarred by his experiences as Gaby.”
Charles and Gaby start dating.
Eventually Charles and Magneto reveal to each other that they are mutants.
Charles and Magneto go to Kenya to rescue Gaby, who has been kidnapped by Hydra.
Magneto tells the Hydra leader, Baron Strucker, “You will find me considerably harder to slay than your countrymen did my family at Auschwitz.” and “Unfortunately, my power did not manifest itself ‘til I reached adulthood. By then the war was over. But had I possessed it in the camps, butcher, the tyranny of your Third Reich would have been ended overnight!”
They rescue Gaby and part ways still ultimately disagreeing about means and ends because of the violent methods Magneto used against Hydra.
Magneto flies off with an enormous stash of Nazi gold plundered from Hydra.
Until he disguises himself as Hydra, Magneto only wears white throughout the issue.

Marvel Graphic Novel #5 “X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills” by Chris Claremont
(This story is a stand-alone story, it doesn’t really get mentioned in the regular Uncanny X-Men timeline or referenced anywhere else, unlike the Dazzler graphic novel published in the same line. That does not necessarily mean it is out of continuity, just that it doesn’t ever get called back to during Claremont’s further writing.)
Magneto joins forces with the X-Men to save Charles from Reverend Stryker and prevent his anti-mutant genocide. He tells Cyclops “I am not your enemy, X-Men, nor do I consider you mine.”
Cyclops presses Magneto about his plan to become world dictator and Magneto replies “I have lived under a dictatorship… and seen my family butchered by its servants. When I rule, it will be for the betterment of all.” Cyclops asks who takes over after Magneto dies, Magneto responds “You, of course, Cyclops. And the X-Men. Why do you think I want you by my side?”
Charles refers to Magneto as Magnus.
Magneto asks Charles to join him and his cause after they defeat Stryker, and though tempted, Charles ultimately refuses holding on to his dream of human/mutant integration.

Magneto asks Pietro and Wanda to accept him into their lives.

Magneto pleads with her to give him a chance. He tells Lee how Magda left him after learning he was a mutant. “My wife, Magda, had such a look on her face – I had saved us both from a marauding patrol of secret police, yet all she saw was that I had used super-powers to do it. In that moment, I became different – our love meant nothing. I was no longer human. I was a mutant, a thing. She ran from me, in terror. I never saw her again. Never knew – until much later, far too late – that she had borne my children. Don’t – please Lee, don’t you run from me, too. I cannot bear to be alone and I am sick at heart at the realization of what I have become. Help me, Lee, I… beg you. I need you.” (In this telling there is no mention of Anya, only a reference to the twins – Wanda and Pietro)
Lee refuses Magneto leaving him brokenhearted.

Magneto draws a parallel between himself and Rachel Summers saying that he “Like Rachel… has dwelled too long in the valley of the shadow of death. In too many tragic ways, we are kindred souls – survivors of the holocaust, children of the abyss.”
Kitty remarks that Magneto has the makings of a hero and Magneto replies “No. I am no hero, merely a man… who has seen and done and endured what can never be forgotten… or forgiven.”
November
Uncanny X-Men (1963) #199 “The Spiral Path” by Chris Claremont

Kitty asks those in attendance if they have any news of her great-aunt Chava who lived in Warsaw before the war.
Magneto reveals that he knew Kitty’s aunt at Auschwitz. He also runs into some friends, other survivors who were at Auschwitz with him. They remark that Magneto helped to save them, and many others. (One could read this conversation as implying Magneto was Polish by nationality)
Magneto’s friends state that he had been in Auschwitz “from the very start.”
Neither of his friends use his name during the conversation.
Mystique and the Freedom Force arrest Magneto for the US Government. Magneto surrenders himself into their custody.
December

Magneto is revealed to be, biologically, only in his early thirties.
The proceedings are interrupted by an attack. Charles and Magneto end up away from the court.
Charles entrusts the running of his institute and the keeping of his dream to Magneto telling him not to return to court to be martyred. Charles is then beamed aboard a spaceship for urgent medical care.

The New Mutants are skeptical of Magneto, but Magneto asks them to give him a chance. He says that both he and Charles view this as a way of “putting things right” after all the evil he has done in his life.
Magneto has doubts about his ability to run the institute.
Magneto wishes Lee were with him, but she’s running her ship. Magneto misses her which surprises him because Magneto “thought I was beyond such caring.”
Lee wrote Magneto a letter telling him that she loved him and calling him darling.
Mirage (Dani Moonstar) is attacked on her way home from town and once Mirage is safe, Magneto finds the attackers. He destroys their house and threatens “Once, with far less cause, I would quite cheerfully have slain you – rent your bodies limb from limb as easily as I did your house. Indeed, I am sorely tempted. The world would not miss such as you. But I am older, a littler sadder – and I hope, wiser. I have learned a better way.” and “Mine is the power to destroy – but I choose not to. Profit from my example. The evil you do others returns unto you a thousandfold – it scars both body and, far worse, soul. Continue down this cruel and bloody road you’ve chosen and one day, you’re certain to meet one not as forgiving as I. Is that what you want? The choice, as ever, remains your own.”
Mirage’s attackers turn themselves into the police.

Wanda invites Magneto to her thanksgiving dinner but ultimately tells him that he will have to prove himself before she’ll accept him into her life.
Magneto takes responsibility for being a bad father. (the author doesn’t write consistently on if Magneto knew he was the twins’ father or not, he also doesn’t seem to care if Pietro has any hard feelings about Magneto, Wanda is the only one who counts. Also, he has Magneto call pregnant Wanda hysterical for no reason, just fyi.)
April
New Mutants (1983) #38 “Aftermath!” by Chris Claremont

One of Emma’s students, a Hellion named Empath (Manuel de la Rocha) is revealed to the reader as having manipulated Magneto to feel lost and confused.

May
New Mutants (1983) #39 “Pawns of the White Queen” by Chris Claremont
Magneto goes into a spiral after sending the majority of the New Mutants away to Emma’s school, Mirage and Warlock being the only students who didn’t go. Mirage criticizes Magneto for not doing more before leaving to go back to her family.
Magneto swims.
Magneto shaves with a straight razor.
Magneto learns that he was manipulated into letting the New Mutants go to Emma’s school. Magneto proclaims Emma “Will learn – very soon and to her eternal sorrow – the Magneto is not a man… to have as one’s enemy!”
Emma alerts the police, telling them that Magneto is attempting to abduct her students knowing that the Avenger’s will try and stop him.
June
New Mutants (1983) #40 “Avengers Assemble!” by Chris Claremont
The Avengers are told Magneto is going to abduct children, all of them assume Magneto has gone bad again and wants to use the children to reboot the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants with younger, more malleable minds.
Magneto has a conversation with Warlock reminding him to never take someone’s “lifeglow” aka their life force which would kill them.
The Avengers battle Magneto who tries to keep Warlock safe and not harm the Avengers. He attempts to explain himself but the Avengers refuse to listen. Captain America tells Magneto of Namor’s heroism during WWII, Magneto replies saying “How fortunate for him, Captain. At the time, I was but a victim of that self-same tyranny. Then, I lacked the strength to win my freedom – and save the lives of those I held dear – but Never Again!” Magneto insists that he has “learned a better way” and is no longer a villain.
The New Mutants rally together and come to Magneto’s aid giving Captain America pause to reflect that the Avengers have welcomed other reformed villains, why shouldn’t they also welcome Magneto.
Magneto and Emma work together to heal the New Mutants’ psychic shock. Emma “made their minds whole… but not their hearts, or souls. Now, at last, with their teachers’ help and support, they have faced their nightmares… and dealt with them… each in their own way.” Emma remarks that Magneto was able to reach the New Mutants on a deeper level which made a “crucial difference.”

Fantastic Four vs. the X-Men (1987) #1 “Are You Sure?!” by Chris Claremont
(This miniseries dovetails into the regular Uncanny X-Men timeline and even though it runs concurrently with the similarly titled “The X-Men vs. the Avengers (1987)” these stories are not overlapping timeline wise and the events of the Fantastic Four miniseries only makes sense to have concluded before the Avengers miniseries begins.)
Kitty is in need of high tech medical care to resolidify herself after being stuck in a permanent phase. Without help she will eventually dissipate. Magneto goes to seek help from Reed Richards.
The Fantastic Four are suspicious of Magneto but agree to help.
Upon arriving at Moira’s Muir Island research facility, Reed has second thoughts and declines to help for fear he could outright kill Kitty accidentally. Magneto insists that he at least try and even attempts to steal Richards’ machine to use it himself, but the Fantastic Four thwart this plan and the X-Men are left without hope for Kitty.

New Mutants (1983) #49 “Ashes of the Soul” by Chris Claremont
Magneto has a dream of when his family was killed by the German death squads known as the Einsatzgruppen.
It is spring time. A small group of people are gathered in front of a pit in the countryside.
Magneto is depicted as a young, black-haired boy, perhaps 10 years old, wearing short pants and long socks.
Magneto’s sister appears to be two or three years older than him.
German soldiers fire at the group of people killing all save Magneto. Without understanding what happens, Magneto’s powers manifest enough to spare him from death, “His mind burns, power he never dreamed existed coming alive.”
He is buried with his family and the rest of the victims, but since he did not die he climbs out of the pit.
Magneto is depicted breaking through the earth to the shock of the German soldiers. Magneto’s black hair has turned white.
Magneto wakes from his memory-dream thinking “So long ago, so far away. Yet the memories are still vivid. Every detail, etched with acid. My power – my mastery over magnetism – first manifested itself that morning. It saved me, why wouldn’t it do the same for those I loved?! The Germans were so astonished by my survival, the decided to spare my life. I was sent instead to a concentration camp. Auschwitz. Sometimes, I wish I hadn’t struggled so hard.”
Magneto wonders if his dream is a harbinger of mutantkind’s eventual fate.
Magneto is still undecided about joining the Hellfire Club thinking “If we stand alone, we could be destroyed. If I accept this alliance… we could be destroyed! The choice is mine – the responsibility is mine – but I don’t know what to do!”

Fantastic Four vs. the X-Men (1987) #4 “A Matter of Faith” by Chris Claremont
Magneto confides in Storm his feelings of helplessness to do anything to save Kitty. He reflects on his past saying “Roughly five hundred miles in that direction is Auschwitz – the Nazi death camp – where my parents and sister were murdered. I should have died with them. And due west from Latveria is the Soviet city of Vinnitsa. There was a fire. I was injured saving my wife. My daughter remained trapped in the burning building. She was much like Kitty, my Anya. The most beautiful of children – two years old, Ororo, and she never cried. She only laughed – with wonder and joy – as though life was some magnificent adventure, staged for her alone.” (There is some contradiction between this telling and the others, some of the details change as ideas are developed even though the story remains wholly the same.)
He goes on to say “She burned, Storm! My power was weaker then. I used it to save my wife, but couldn’t reach Anya. A crowd had gathered. I begged for help. They refused me. They saw I was a mutant and some called for me to be hurled into the same flames that consumed my child. Too late – in rage and a grief that ravages me still – I came at last to my birthright: the absolute control over the forces and manifestations of magnetism that is the power of… Magneto! Magda… was so terrified of my power… and how I wielded it… that she fled from me. How different, I wonder, would the pathway of my life have been if she had not? In that awful moment, Storm, I lost everything.” (This telling of the story does not include the secret police)
Magneto tells Storm that he feels he is forever haunted by his past saying that people insist on seeing him as a villain even though he’s changed. He reflects that maybe he should have gone back to finish his trial.
Reed Richards finally comes to help them save Kitty and later Magneto and Richards make peace with each other.

The X-Men vs. the Avengers (1987) #4 “Day of Judgment” by Tom DeFalco
Magneto surrenders himself to the Avengers and agrees to finish his trial before the World Court.
Gaby Haller once again acts as his defense attorney.

Classic X-Men (1986) #12 by Chris Claremont
(Classic X-Men reprinted earlier Claremont X-Men stories but added new material (sometimes individual pages, sometimes additional short stories) to fill out the issue and tie into current comic continuity. Claremont wrote both the original X-Men issue that was being reprinted and the new material that was added.)
(New material that takes place directly after Uncanny X-Men (1963) #104)
Magneto is asleep not long after being resurrected by Eric the Red. He is dreaming “As always, the dream begins with Auschwitz… and Magda. More than a million people died in this camp. And with World War II ending – the Third Reich defeated – it’s guards wanted no witnesses left… to tell the tale of this horror.”
Magneto prevents a camp guard from killing Magda, then takes the guard’s gun and runs away with Magda.
Magneto is said to have “been here from the start… grown to manhood within its electrified barbed wire fence. If he was to die, it would not be in this abattoir… and not without a fight!”
Magneto and Magda run into the wilderness, eventually escaping into the Carpathian Mountains where they eventually settle and begin to build a life together. The page shows Magneto felling a tree, learning woodworking, studying, Magneto socializing with friends at a dinner table, getting married to Magda and cuddling his wife and newborn daughter, Anya.
Magneto is described as having “an insatiable hunger for knowledge, coupled with a wildfire intelligence” so eventually “he bade the village farewell and took his family eastward, into the Soviet Union, hoping to win a place at university” (This suggests that Magneto was living in a village in the Polish side of the Carpathians)
Magneto, Magda and Anya come to the “city of Vinnitsa, the biggest they’d ever seen.” (This suggests that Magneto and Magda came from a rural village or town before being sent to Auschwitz)
Magneto leaves his wife and daughter to go find work.
Anya is depicted as a child between 4-6 years old.
Magneto’s powers first manifest when he has a disagreement with another man. Magneto realizes the powers come from himself and isn’t sure what to make of it.
Magneto returns to the inn where he and his family are staying since this is their first day in the city. The inn is on fire and Anya is trapped on the second floor of the building.
Magda is in the building trying to save their daughter, Magneto uses his powers to get her to safety.
Magneto curses in Russian.
Magneto attempts to get to Anya but is prevented by secret police who are trying to arrest him for his earlier disagreement.
Anya dies in the fire, Magneto’s powers break loose killing those around him save for Magda.
Magda is terrified by what she just witnessed and runs away from Magneto.
Magneto wakes from his dream and uses his powers to save a nearby mother and child from a fire.
Magneto speaks French.

Magneto goes to the infirmary where Doug’s body is laying. He pulls back the sheet covering Doug and looks at the boy thinking “Curse you Charles Xavier, for putting me in this position! I have no rapport with these children. Observe the bitter fruit of my labors!” Magneto kneels at the side of the table where Doug lays and weeps over his body. “An ill wind is coming… they are registering mutants like the once registered my people in Poland…! Who knows what horrors await us. But they are only children. How can they possibly understand… any of this.” (This suggests Magneto is Polish by birth)

(New material presented in the form of a backflash that takes place at some point after the Uncanny X-Men (1963) #161 story which details Charles and Magneto meeting for the first time. This story suggests that these events take place shortly before Uncanny X-Men #1 when the X-Men face Magneto for the first time in 1963.)
Magneto single-handedly takes out a secret Nazi base in South America and captures Oberstrumbanführer Hans Richter to be taken back to Israel and be put on trial.
After using his powers, Magneto suffers from debilitating psychic pain “Worse than the bite of the kapo’s whip, the murder of parents and family. The death of a child. The loss of a beloved wife. It passes quickly leaving him alive – and almost wishing he wasn’t.” Magneto observes that “These seizures strike now whenever I use my powers. More extreme my usage, more debilitating the attack.”
Magneto reports of the captured Nazi to a group called only “Control” (This seems to be a stand in for a Mossod style organization.)
Two weeks later, in Rio de Janiero, Magneto reads an article about Charles Xavier and wonders if he shouldn’t reconnect with him and seek help for his psychic attacks.
A woman in a bikini and sarong approaches Magneto asking why he’s dressed so formally in a suit and tie at a beach front cafe. Magneto replies “This, I’m afraid, is as uninhibited as I get.”
The woman turns out to be Magneto’s lover Isabelle, no last name is given.
Magneto recounts to Isabelle about how Anya died and Magda left him.
Control did not want Richter captured as he was a useful informant, so they send a squad to kill Isabelle and Magneto. They succeed in slaying Isabelle, but Magneto uses his powers to fight against them.
Magneto looks on Isabelle’s body completely disillusioned with humanity. The reader is told that “the dream dies… and the nightmare is born.”

Uncanny X-Men (1963) #253 “Storm Warnings” by Chris Claremont
Magneto and Moira quarrel on Muir Island about him parting ways with the X-Men, the New Mutants and the Xavier Institute.
Magneto is convinced “There is a war coming, Moira. And you are a fool if you do not see it. We mutants cannot be wished away, we are here on this earth, more and more born every day. There are those who will accept us, and those who fear us and seek our destruction. And, worst of all, those like Genoshans… who desire to exploit us for their own power and profit. We must be strong enough – as a people – to survive without the sufferance of the one or the aggression of the others. I mean to ensure that. I must – because there is no one else.”

Uncanny X-Men (1963) #274 “Crossroads” by Chris Claremont
Magneto narrates this issue: “All my life, I have been drawn to the wild and desolate places of the world. As a boy, I saw myself walking where no man ever had. Alone against the elements. The more I came to know of people… the more strongly that yearning dream spoke to me. As the fierce, unyielding emptiness without struck some resonant echo within my heart and soul. Yet for all of that… for all of life replete with it’s share and far more of rage and pain and suffering, as harshly given as endured… still I manage to find myself with allies. Who appear determined to stand by me, regardless. I wonder which are the greater fools: they for trying and trusting, or me for allowing it.”
Magneto is working with Ka-Zar and a depowered Rogue in the Savage Lands against the evil Zaladane.
When Rogue fights one of Zaladane’s goons, Magneto intervenes, thinking “I hear my daughter Anya scream as she burns before my eyes… hear Isabelle’s gasp of surprise as she is murdered… two I loved but were unable to save. Only avenge. It will not be that way with Rogue.”
Rogue presses Magneto to be merciful, saying “We’re the good guys, right?! We’re s’posed t’ stand for something better!” Magneto narrates “She actually believes that. Why can’t I? All I see is blood. That already spilled. That yet to be. I see my path so clearly. But I turn away.”
Magneto narrates “Later in my citadel, I reflect that ages ago – in what for me was another lifetime – I used my knowledge of genetics to mutate a band of swamp savages into super-powered beings. When they were no longer useful, I abandoned them to their fate, forgot their very existence. More of my past come back to haunt my present and threaten the future.” and in regards to his past as leader of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants “It is a goal I once had, in those long-gone days of madness, when I was reviled and condemned as a super-villain” and then later “My life’s ambition has been to safeguard my fellow mutants. Zaladane has no such compunction. And I hear the echo of Der Führer’s voice in the radio of memory, smell the awful stench of the sick and dying as the cattle cars brought the condemned to Auschwitz. I wear red, the color of blood, in tribute to their lost lives. And the harder I try to cast it aside, to find a gentler path… the more irresistibly I’m drawn back. I should have died myself, with those I loved. Instead, I carted the bodies by the hundred by the thousands… from the death house to the crematorium… and the ashes to the burial ground. Asking now what I could not then – why was I spared?! To bring others the death that passed me by?”
Magneto narrates on Zaladane “The more I come to know of her… the more I find myself trapped in a mirror… staring at a distorted vision of myself. Sleep is a mistake. But I’m so weary this once I can’t resist. Any more than I can hold at bay… the nightmares that come along. Flowers. Scent of growing things. Joyful sounds of life. So clear. So crisp, after more than half a century. Someone sobs. My sister holds tight my hand. My father still cannot believe this is happening. I hear laughter. The guns blaze, and I’m falling with the others. Into darkness. Loamy earth smell tainted by the acrid burning of lime. All of us pressed so tight together, embracing eternity. So easy to give up. Lie in my grave. Breathe my last. But I fight!” (This recounts the events around Magneto's family's death depicted in The New Mutants #49)
Rogue wakes Magneto and they share a moment before being interrupted by Ka-Zar. Magneto thinks “Am I imagining the sudden spark between us. Leaving Rogue as shaken as I? Leave well enough alone. I am pledged to another. As much as one can pledge a heart full of ghosts.”
Magneto narrates “I cannot recall a point in my life when I did not fight. Nor any longer of a time when war held the slightest horror for me.”
Magneto’s group is aided by Nick Fury’s group which includes the father of one of the Soviet sailors killed my Magneto on the submarine Leningrad. Magneto narrates “Again, a cry from the past. One father to another, in anguished grief for a slain child. At the time, my actions seemed quite appropriate. The Leningrad had fired a salvo of nuclear ballistic missiles at me, so I sank her, with all hands. Thinking of that crew not as people, but merely an object lesson: how dare they defy me, threaten me, these Russians whose countrymen let my daughter burn to death? There is too much history and hate between us. I cannot talk to these men.”

Uncanny X-Men (1963) #274 “The Path Not Taken” by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee
The Russian colonel guns down Magneto leading to him being captured by Zaladane. The colonel joins Zaladane. Zaladane uses a machine to try and transfer Magneto’s powers to herself. Under the influence of the machine Magneto narrates “Try as I might, I cannot stop this. And worst of all, as my life is torn from me, turned into a sideshow entertainment for the Brainchild’s sadistic pleasure… with my strength devoted wholly to that struggle, I have nothing left to block my emotional responses to the memories themselves. Once more, I hear myself howl ‘til my voice shatters at the sight of my daughter, Anya, burning to death before my eyes. Once more, hot blood mixes with salt tears as my beloved Isabelle’s throat is cut by those I thought my trusted friends. Once more, rage flashes through me… hand in hand with a terror I’d not felt since Auschwitz… as at last I confront the Shadow King. Followed by sick shame at the awful cost of my survival.”
Zaladane leaves Magneto with her minions. Rogue and her team have infiltrated Zaladanes stronghold and once Magneto realizes they are there, he strikes the minions unexpectedly. Magneto narrates “They think me beaten, finished. A mistake many have made in the past. As I found the strength, as a boy, to survive being machine gunned and buried alive, and later the unimaginable horror of Auschwitz… so do I find it in me, here and now, to break free.”
Magneto narrates “The primal, paramount lesson of my life is that I can depend on no one save myself.”
Magneto fights against the Russian colonel saying “I am sorry for your son, colonel. Which is more than I ever heard… for the slaughter of those I loved.” Colonel Semyanov says “Your… daughter you mean? And that absolves you of any crime?” Magneto replies “I never said it did. For who we are, and what we have done, comrade colonel… we are both of us condemned.”
Rogue and Magneto argue over how he intends to deal with Zaladane. Magneto says “The New Mutants were left in my charge and they suffered for it – because I tried to pattern myself after Charles Xavier. I am not Charles Xavier. I will never be Charles Xavier. I was a fool to try. As he was, for believing I could succeed. My people are in danger – more so now than ever before – from the Hellfire Club and their accursed Shadow Kind, from foul creatures such as this, perhaps even from the very United Nations which Colonel Fury loyally serves. And a kinder, gentler Magneto cannot save them.”

X-Men (1991) #1 “Rubicon” by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee
Magneto has established a mutant haven on a new Asteroid M. World governments are wary of it and the X-Men are dispatched to discover what’s going on.
Magneto raises the submarine Leningrad (which he sank in Uncanny X-Men #150) from the sea floor. He finds some of the nuclear missiles the submarine was carrying are intact.
Inside the submarine, Magneto comes finds himself sitting among the bones of the Leningrad’s crew. “Now though, at last, he finds himself face to face with the consequence of his acts. And he remembers another time, other bodies, bones still coated with the flesh of family and friends, tossed into a lime-soaked pit and him along with them, only he was still alive. Somehow, he clawed his way to the surface.” (This again refers to the account of Magneto's family's death in The New Mutants #49)
Rogue tells Magneto that his actions are scaring people. Magneto says “I tried my best to change, I did my best to follow Xavier’s path to a peaceful co-existence between Homo Sapiens and Homo Sapiens Superior. And paid for that folly with the blood of innocents.”
Later on Asteroid M, Magneto ruminates on his latest conflict with the X-Men thinking of Wolverine in particular “For the brief time I worked with the X-Men, he accepted me wholeheartedly. If not as a friend, then at least as a comrade-in-arms. Why then has he turned on me? What has changed? Why must blood always come between me and others?” (Magneto has been working with the X-Men and the New Mutants since 1985)
Radical mutant acolytes that have decided to follow Magneto, led by Fabian Cortez, fight with the X-Men. Magneto puts a stop to it and says “All my life, I have seen people slaughtered wholesale for no more reason than the deity they worshipped, or the color of their skin – or the presence in their DNA of an extra, special gene. I cannot change the world but I can – and will – ensure that my race will never again suffer for its fear and prejudice. Henceforth, I declare Asteroid M a sovereign world. Home and haven to mutantkind. If you are born Homo Sapiens Superior, then you are automatically a citizen, entitled to safe haven above and security below. Even you X-Men – even your mentor, my old friend, Charles Xavier – are welcome here. But mark this and mark it well – harm done against any mutant is harm done to me. And I shall respond accordingly.”

X-Men (1991) #2 “Firestorm” by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee

Magneto abducts Charles and Moira looking for answers about his genetic structure. Moira admits that she saw there was a genetic instability in Magneto’s genetic matrix, and she tried to stabilize it when he was an infant in her care.
Magneto is infuriated that Moira conducted genetic experimentation on him in an attempt to change who he was. He questions every decision he’s made since his rebirth.
Moira is apologetic, but Magneto’s anger is unabated. He tells her “I heard those same rationales as a boy, in the Auschwitz death camp, from Dr. Josef Mengele himself!”

Moira reveals that the genetic experimentation she did on baby Magneto didn’t work.
Moira also points out that Cortez has been using his power to weaken Magneto.
Cortex flees Asteroid M and fires a shot at the complex that will kill all the inhabitants.
Charles and the X-Men prepare to leave in their spacecraft, but Magneto refuses to leave with them instead choosing to stay on the asteroid to preserve its integrity as long as possible using his powers. He tells Charles “My life was shaped by forces and events none of you can possibly understand. You speak to the best of humanity. I have endured the worst. You imagine the reality of the Holocaust, of the Nazi death camps. I grew up in one. Perhaps, as you say, I am tainted by blood and rage – and death. But perhaps as well, that blood and rage and death comprise the armor that will sustain me and those who stand by me through the ordeal to come. The past is prologue, old friend. And the future I behold for you is… war. We have already chosen our path.”
Asteroid M blows up just as the X-Men escape. Charles tells them all “At the last… he opened his thoughts to me. He is still the man I remember from younger, happier days – who was my friend – and yet… none of that matters anymore, does it? ‘I save you, X-Men,’ he said, ‘because that is my task in life: to safeguard my people – Homo Sapiens Superior – mutantkind – from those who would do us harm. And those forces are legion. In that and I suspect nothing else, Charles, we are much alike. I have survived one Holocaust, I could not tolerate another. Nor any who – by accident, by intent – act to bring it about. I bore no animus to you, old friend, or your students until you chose to oppose me. Then, I had no choice but to count you among my enemies. Have no illusions on that score. Perhaps it’s best it end this way, Charles. Best for my dream to end in flames and glory, here far above Earth… for if we were ever to meet again… I would have shown you no mercy. I give you your dream, Charles. But I fear, in time, your heart will break as you realize it has ever been a fool’s hope. Farewell, my friend.”

I wonder if people realize that it took ND in the early days almost 10 years to get this big. Gwen is a wonderful singer and performer. But even with her in the band, it took a lot of years for their breakthrough!!! And then people think that the guys in DC would get as high with a good singer and them being in their 40’s. No matter if Gwen performs solo and a lot less during the year, she already had her name, she was the frontwoman and totally in the picture. The guys are equally as wonderful, but they form the band, not the vocals and that will always be more difficult to start up something new. Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac went solo and if she did, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Lindsey Buckingham would do other projects, but never together. Lindsey even did go solo and he is an awesome guitar player, but even he wasn’t able to get as much succes. Lou Gramm (he was the singer) of Foreigner went solo and he had succes. Mick Jones needed another singer and it took years to find Kelly Hansen (after Lou Gramm left for a second and definitive time). But Mick was the owner of the band and was able to keep the name Foreigner. They made one new album, the rest were best of’s and the touring was all about the old songs that Mick wrote together with Lou Gramm. That is why they kept having success. Most bands who fall apart is mostly because of some drama that goes on, but when the singer leaves, it really leaves the rest of the band in loose ends. It would be the same when John Bon Jovi would leave Bon Bovi. Would you really see the rest of this band getting on a new project with a new singer and having success? It was already difficult that Richie Sambora (lead guitar)left, but if John would leave, that would be the end for all the rest of them.
Love all this music trivia. As someone who had the Buckingham Nicks poster on my wall for years even though they weren’t my generation of music, I have to give Lindsey props for Trouble. And of course the equally brilliant and annoying Holiday Road. But points taken.
And Davey Havok is an incredible singer. Really good! It’s just that so few people have the lyrical genius, the iconic looks, the charisma, and the stage skills of Gwen. Mick Jagger does. Sting. Stevie is close but can’t work a stage like Gwen. I saw her a couple months ago and she is still amazing tho! Linda Perry. Rod Stewart. Don Henley. All check so many boxes but Gwen is so elite among them for what she can do. She just chose family over more fame.
Sometimes I think Gwen had more fun when ND was bubbling under and had small time fame. But she was always destined to be a star and this road led her to Blake.

when you get this you have to answer with 5 of ur fav songs and then tag your mutuals to do the same, but as usual, I'm tagging nobody, and I'm gonna do what I want.
5 Colorful Songs!
tagged by @wen-kexing-apologist who had a pretty good playlist!
Note: Yellow is my favorite color; therefore, Coldplay's "Yellow" could not be considered. It's not fair to these other songs that they aren't about yellow.
AFI - Girl's Not Grey
youtube
Lead singer, Davey Havok, is everything to me. He looks good with any hairstyle and at any age, and the way he performs gender is amazing. I've seen AFI several times, but my favorite was when they were on tour with 30 Seconds to Mars and Linkin' Park. I caught the tour at the Dallas stop, and AFI was the opener. As much as everyone loves "Miss Murder," I'm strictly a "Girl's Not Grey" screamer because this music video is forever embedded in my head and my heart.
New Order - Blue Monday
youtube
No style of music hits me harder than 80s synth-pop, and any version of this song is a win in my book. The juxtaposition is what makes it one of my favorites because it gives us over two minutes of the best dance beats in the intro only to hit us with the lyric "How does it feel? To treat me like you do?" then proceeds to make us dance to five more minutes of the singer lamenting about an abusive relationship. It's a bop!
NENA - 99 Red Balloons
youtube
The 80s + dance songs about horrible shit = my eternal love. This song was originally in German then an English version came out, and everyone was dancing to a song about nuclear war. It was about a girl releasing balloons and because the government couldn't identity the objects, they shot them down, which caused a domino effect of other countries releasing bombs, but in the end, the girl stands in the rumble releasing one final balloon. It's a song about war, destruction, and hope. God, I love it.
Goldfrapp - Ride a White Horse
youtube
Most people know this duo for their 2003 hit "Strict Machine" which is a song about control, machines, and, of course, sex, so know that is very on brand for the band. They came out with "Ooh La La" which was about wanting sex without romance, and "Ride a White Horse" could be referring to drugs, but it wouldn't be a stretch to think it's about sex too, especially since the color white aligns with purity and innocence, yet the lead singer is doing the dirtiest things in the music video, so yeah, sex is my final answer.
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
youtube
This song is about Nas. Winehouse is singing about American rapper Nas! She wrote other songs about him such as "Me & Mr. Jones" and "In My Bed" which he confirmed, but in a way that merely states Amy liked listening to his music, which seems like a bold lie because like all of her songs, it hits at the core of her emotions. The lyric "I died a hundred times" just ain't about sadness, you know? But that's why I love this song. It has a history. She is exposing a secret while keeping it close to her chest. She was sharing her whole life but being guarded. It was beautiful! It still is.
Bonus: Purple Disco Machine - Male Stripper
youtube
German Grammy-award winning DJ Purple Disco Machine knows his audience is queer and creates sets he knows will resonant with that audience. I have seen him at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, Nevada, Red Rocks in Denver, Colorado, and a club in Koln, Germany and each time he delivered queer dance floor icons like Sylvester and Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears to the masses, so I'm going to keep showing up to his sets because I know it'll be a good time for me and all the disco queers.

Sooo... Your obsession excitement about X-Men makes me want to watch/rewatch the movies. What do you think, in what order should I watch them? 🤔
Ahh!! And then we could talk about them!!! Exciting!!!
Okay so, watching them in release order can be a little messy because of the change in timeline, so what I’d personally recommend is watching them in chronological order, like so:
Tumblr media
(Thank you to my friend for making me this list back in Jan!! The blue highlights are just from me marking them off.)
The one change that I think can be made is you can watch Wolverine Origins after Dark Phoenix, which I know is what Jamie has done, as WO belongs to the original timeline, whereas Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix are the new timeline. If you need the timeline explaining, just DM me! I know it probably sounds confusing, but it’s really not.
Tumblr media
Here’s my ranking of the movies. The Deadpool movies aren’t technically X-Men movies by style standards, but they are hilarious, so I had to use a fancy graph to make sure they got their justice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are the five characters you should constantly be on the look out for because they’re hazardous icons:
Charles Xavier/Professor X (dad 1)
Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto (dad 2)
Logan Howlett/Wolverine (grumpy uncle who does not want to be there)
Peter Maximoff/Quicksilver (hyper bio son)
Alex Summers/Havok (angry adopted son)
And I think that’s all of the important things out of the way! So just DM me when you get around to it!!!

18 for the spotify wrapped game, please and thank you!
#18 - "Black No. 1" by Type O Negative
For the Spotify Wrapped Snippet Game
This is definitely an Ollie song/band (though, actually, she doesn't dye her hair fyi). I don't have her "voice" figured out yet, so this also made for a fun way to give it a try. Thanks for sending the prompt in!
Dysthanasia Taglist: @thecyrulik @theimperiumchronicles @k--havok (Sorry, I forget to do this so often that a couple of you might have no idea what's going on in this ^^;)
Words: 1,008
Content Advisory: Swearing, (mostly) joking references to violence
“Ollie?”
She was pretty sure she’d never heard Mergus shout before, actually. It was impressive he could make himself heard over the aneurysm-inducing volume of her stereo at all.
“Ollie!”
She kept ripping the stupid sticky notes from her bedroom wall, wadding them up and hurling them to the carpet, but with only a fraction of her attention.
“Oleander Blume.”
Oh, well, golly gee. Guess she was really in for it now. Smirking, she turned and spotted Mergus standing in front of the stereo set-up, hands shielding his ears. He’d lived through the Black Death, Industrial Revolution, and the Break, but couldn’t find the pause icon on a control panel. She strolled over and slid the volume bar down until only the tinny ringing of temporarily damaged hearing remained. With a sigh, Mergus lowered his hands.
“How on Earth could playing racket at that level be enjoyable?”
“Oh, what, you never cranked your hurdy-gurdy as hard as you could just to forget about the world for a while, old man?”
For that, he looked up at her with his Fledglings These Days Face. Though she rolled her eyes, Ollie pulled the hood of her sweatshirt back and swiped stray wisps of blonde hair away from her cheeks.
“Fine. I’m listening, okay?”
Rather than come right out with what he wanted, Mergus went and perched on the end of her bed. A vision of order and dignity in his flawlessly pressed suit against the backdrop of her tangled pentagram-pattern bedspread and a pile of black and red laundry she still hadn’t hauled to the washer. He plucked a pair of ripped jeans and a fishnet shirt out of the way so he could pat the spot next to him. Damn, it was going to be that kind of night then. Ollie dragged her combat boots as she walked, but parked her ass where told to all the same.
“Whatever it is, just say it. That fucking ghost got into my room again, so I’m not in the mood for a long fireside chat.”
His gaze flickered over to the remaining collage of sticky notes that had spelled her name out in spiky, three-foot high letters. “I thought one of Hawthorne’s aides warded your suite recently.”
“Well, that crusty ass zombie obviously didn’t send one of his best or brightest because the stupid haint made a mess.” Added to it. Whatever.
“Ceph only acts out for attention. They’d leave you be if you acknowledge them once in a while.”
“They’d be out of my hair permanently if I torched their room too.”
He didn’t dignify that with more than a raised eyebrow. He didn’t have to. Not when the memory of Wes Mayer attempting to do the same thing was still a household punchline. Of course, the ass-dragging mutt didn’t have enough brains or subtlety to fill a thimble either. Ollie, on the other hand, made a living on sneaky strategy.
“I stopped by,” Mergus said, “because I have an assignment out on the coast for you.”
“With who?” She already saw it coming, of course. The second he mentioned where they’d be going she knew.
Ollie still let out an agonized groan and flopped back on the bed, arms straight out to the sides as if she’d been crucified, when Mergus answered, “Renato.”
“Why don’t you just send a fluffy little dog along with me instead? Would be about as useful.”
The fine lines gathered in the corners of his eyes and lips deepened with the onset of his I’m Really Quite Serious Face. “I’ve considered the requirements carefully. This is the best way to meet all of them.”
“The best way to finally drive me bugfuck, you mean.” Sweet Satan on a stick. She could already imagine it. Having to watch him preen in the visor mirror every thirty seconds. Controlling her gag reflex while he flirted with every stranger from there to the Pacific. Listening to him bring up that goldfish for the billionth time. She’d beat his perfectly-shaped skull in with a tire iron before they got halfway to their destination.
“I already took into account your history together,” Mergus said. If bloodborn could develop gray hairs, his neat curls and close-cropped beard would’ve had new streaks. “You’ll be taking separate cars, staying in separate accommodations for the most part—but you will work together if it comes down to a fight. Is that understood?”
Ollie lifted her head enough to meet his stern gaze, her eyebrows and curiosity raised. “Who are we fighting?”
“If all goes well, drastic action won’t be necessary.”
“Is it Grandpa Ghoul or Muttley Mayer? Or both?”
He surrendered with a sigh. “Hawthorne and I have…not yet come to an agreement on how to best handle the matter.”
She grinned. “So, keep our heads on a swivel and chainsaw any ouroboroi that get in the way in half.”
Fledglings These Days Face made another cameo. “I’ll stress again that violence is a last resort. And you are not packing a chainsaw.”
“Fine.” She stuck her tongue out.“Spoilsport.”
“Can I rely on you to be civil in a meeting with Renato when I give you both your instructions then? Say, nine o’clock, my office?”
Propping herself on her elbows, Ollie made a show of considering it. “I’ll try to keep the biting and stabbing to a minimum. Sure.”
The smile that made his eyes glitter was worth any future headache. Mergus patted her knee and stood, smoothing his jacket and tie into place. “It means a lot, coming from you, my girl.”
Once alone again, Ollie glanced over at the small hill of laundry. With only a slight scowl, she got up and started stuffing it into a bag to take to the wash room. She was going to need clean clothes to pack soon. Good thing ninety-nine percent of her wardrobe consisted of black. When she made a mess with that chainsaw she planned to buy on the trip, the stains would never show.

HAVOK Dolls #4 - The Leaving Song, Pt. II
In honor of the STS20 show happening this Saturday (which I tragically will not be attending 💔), I decided to draw an iconic outfit from one of the STS music videos! The box art is based off of the stage from that very video. I think TLSPII playing on MTV was the very first time I was exposed to AFI as a kid, although it would take until DU for me to fully discover the band. Words cannot describe how much this band means to me, and it’s been a delight to revisit this specific era of the band. I may not be at the show, but I’m so excited for the performance nonetheless ❤️‍🔥

The early years of the game were full of comfy aircraft like the Vestra that added atmosphere and flavor to the game. Look at that charming little nose and split tail. It was tiny enough to do the Zancudo tunnel run, too.
Tumblr media
After cutting your teeth on the Rogue, the Pyro was what you moved up to when you wanted to make a passenger soil themselves. The copilot couldn't do much other than watch as you turned this supermaneuverable dogfighter into an airborne carnival ride that could beat even a Lazer in a turn fight.
Tumblr media
This Hydra was an aircraft with a very special place in my heart, because I discovered the glitch to remove the missiles entirely on my own, with no forums or tutorials involved. I felt like a million bucks when I logged back in to see those clean wings. It struck me as very fitting, considering I didn't use the Hydra in its usual close air support role and merely used it for cargo runs and the occasional escort.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, the Havok here also had a special place in my heart because I completely and utterly hated it. The only reason it was still in my collection was that I never needed the money from selling it. Seriously, you looked at this thing funny and it would tip over and drag you into a cartoonish death slide before making you question your entire life up to this point. And then they introduced a sale mission with eight, yes, eight of these things! No wonder nobody ran hangar cargo.
Tumblr media
Tiny plane is tiny. The Alpha Z-1 was the plane of choice for buzzing downtown and challenging yourself to fit into ever tighter holes. Seriously, this thing was fast and could turn on a dime, and it even had countermeasures to keep trouble off your tail. The only bad part was that this little bird would turn into an albatross if you were even the slightest bit off the mark when trying to land.
Tumblr media
A Cargobob was another one of those things that every player was all but required to own, whether it was the standard camo flavor or the alternate Cargobob Jetsam like this one. It was indispensable for getting vehicles unstuck and having fun bringing them to places they had no business being at. Even the developers got in on it with the missions that had you airlifting a tank back to your bunker.
Tumblr media
The B-11 Strikeforce was an odd duck. Despite the popularity of its real-life analogue, it took years to show up in the game, and when it finally did, it was in the form of an unusually maneuverable high-altitude dogfighter that couldn't do the one thing its inspiration was famous for. Seriously, the explosive cannon on the B-11 took multiple hits and multiple passes to take out even a person standing completely still as it tossed them around like a beach ball. One of the aces in our crew practically made a game out of seeing how long they could juggle a ground target with a single strafe. All the developers had to do was copy and paste the cannons from the Hydra and Lazer, yet they chose to give their version of one of the most famous aircraft in American history a brand-new bespoke weapon that hit with all the force of a runaway shopping cart.
Tumblr media
The Besra was another one of those planes from the launch era that was flavorful and fun. A nimble stunt plane was always a good time in itself, but what really made the unarmed Besra fun was that it shared the same radar icon as the two very common and very dangerous combat jets. My crew and I strongly condemned attacking any players transporting cargo, but I can't say it wasn't amusing to buzz past them and raise their heart rate a little before they found out it was a harmless Besra.
Tumblr media
The duality of man was exemplified in the Akula stealth helicopter. With potent weapons, good speed and agility, a little bit of armor, four seats, and the ability to go on and off the radar at any time, the Akula was effective in just about every role, which made it popular for sneak attacks in combat zones as well as cargo runs when you just wanted the irate masses to let you grind in peace. Like the Besra, it was also a giggle to take the Akula up to the height limit and turn off its stealth above a crowd of players before watching their radar blips scurry about and circle the wagons. Ain't I a stinker?
Tumblr media
Savage! Just pretend I said that in the voice of the theme of the Amiga game by the same name. The Savage was a fun helicopter from the heists era that managed to be useful in PvP and PvE for quite a while with its explosive cannon and enough armor to disengage. It also served as very painful insight into the developers' priorities. One of the Savage's quirks was that it had a slightly off-center radar lock point, which meant that in rare circumstances a skilled pilot could dodge homing missiles by pitching the helicopter forward. This bug persisted untouched for three entire years until players noticed that it could be used to counter (read: not get instantly steamrolled by) the Oppressor Mk II. Only then did the devs "patch" the Savage, because nothing was allowed to oppose the almighty shitter bike. This sort of backwards balancing is what began to drive my crew and my friends away from the game.

my thoughts on the Hellfire Gala (2022) outfits, in order of their appearance in the guidebook
scarlet witch - these guidebooks always start with the bangers huh? wanda really has that “space deity” look thanks to that ombre effect, and don’t even get me started on those dashing rings and that detailed headpiece, a certified 10/10
havok - while i don’t dislike this look on alex, last year’s outfit really does outshine this one for me; not necessarily horrible, but some more interesting concepts could’ve been included to elevate the blandness of “back in black” (a wild headpiece or some whirlwind sunglasses maybe?)
spider-man - i can see the 2099 inspirations here and i couldn’t be happier for it; the glowing parts really do it for me, along with those almost sneaker-like accents on his feet and wow i can’t get enough of that spider logo - absolute win
gambit - now this is a remy design done well, and whilst last year’s black 3-piece wasn’t horrendous, it was dull, but to make up for it this year they nailed it with just enough of that gambit flair; that said, it captures his flirtiness and pizzaz perfectly, job well done - especially adore those blue accents, tying the look together flawlessly
black widow - where do i start? all those satin (lace?) sections, especially that veil, really add to that seductive mysterious femme fatale poise that nat has in heaps, the golden accents and the almost scorpion-like braid certainly certify this as an eXcellent ensemble
magik - [edit] so yeah, this outfit grew on me; maybe not as evocative as last year, this year magik’s regalia is self-contained and straight-forward in it’s influences and it definitely ends up on my “good” list at the end of the day
dr. doom - we’re back on track with this glorious doom attire; absolutely screams “royalty” and overall is certainly in my top 5 outfits from the entire gala - absolutely no gripes with any part of this design
wolverine/x-23 - while last year gave us an unimpressive one-piece dress, this year they more than made up for it, regarding every piece of laura’s styling with creativity; this “punk” look unironically has all the spunk i would expect of laura - from the heavy boots to the accent belts and (this time) very well-placed slits with a striking mask solidify this look as an exciting addition to kinney’s wardrobe
synch - contrary to above, synch’s whole “generation x”-inspired get-up really is a step back from his brilliant, simple suit from last year; nothing here stands out, all just blending in with those rainbow accents which just look tacky to me, with the zipper being the most eye-catching piece of the whole design, which puts it at a solid 3/10 (yes i know it’s his regular costume but a lot more could’ve been done as he is a full-fledged x-man now!)
iceman - now we’re talking! bobby absolutely kills it this year with a coherent ice suit, which really contrasts last year’s messy dress and wings, this time complimenting bobby’s flirtiness; on top of it all, as you know i’m a sucker for the “outfit-being-part-of-character’s-physiology” thing, and it works like a charm here
she-hulk - jen looks debonair, with a straightforward 2-piece with the loose trousers flattering her physique fabilously, masterfully contrasting her femininity and strength; not one of my absolute favorites but a worthy addition to jen’s most iconic looks - i also really love the glasses
emma frost - right on par, our queen of the gala is again rocking a white and gold dress with many cutouts, showing everyone who the absolute boss is; some of last year’s outfits actually suited her better in my opinion, but as far as formalwear goes this is yet another strong inclusion in emma’s expansive gown collection
captain america/steve rogers - steve looks undoubtedly sharp with his 40′s inspired 3-piece, in those iconic reds, whites and blues; the pinstripe was a nice idea and the cape fits him finely - a illustrious look for a distinguished man
captain america/sam wilson - sam knew what the assignment was and passed with flying colours (pun intended); nothing bad about this design, but nothing stands out that i can even comment on, but still a good look nonetheless - do like the shield design tho!
captain marvel - continuing the trend with the flag colors, carol’s absolute saving grace is her jacket, which reminds me of wanda with those space elements (which if u think about it makes more sense with carol, than with wanda but oh well), but i feel like more could’ve been done to make her stand out a with some accessories or a design on her suit; still charming tho
cyclops - catwalk-ready and dressed to impress, this is yet another strike for scott; his gala looks always bring something fresh to his suit collection, with this year’s really swerving for that pirate look with the loose shirt and overlapping garments, possibly refrencing a certain space pirate...? my only minor complaint is that i would’ve liked to see some more colors, but maybe next year
jean grey - the mutants’ garbs are some of the strongest in the gala (as it should be), with jean taking the lead with her 3 confirmed looks, which absolutely cement the “marvel girl” pastiche vibes; even if they’re not perfect, each of jean’s get-ups has something to enjoy and while i’d like to see some 90′s or phoenix-inspired dresses, this year jean may be crowned “best-dressed” but we’ll have to wait and see (ps. i adored last year’s costume a lot, so it’ll be hard for me to say these are jean’s best gala looks but don’t quote me on that yet :)
forge - forge actually didn’t recieve a gala outfit last year and they are slightly making up for it this year with a surprisingly solid entrance; while i have to admit that i find forge as a character boring, but his suit - simple as it is, works like a charm and i can say that it is a certified top 10
iron man - tony.. who hurt you, my friend? i know for a fact that he dresses to impress, so what happened here? a fancy armor with a bowtie or a longer coat would’ve done miracles to elevate this design, but alas, we are left with crumbs... do better next year
rogue - wow... just wow. i didn’t think rogue could have a bad gala look, and well... i still think that! rogue looks absolutely breathtaking, as always and at this point i’m convinced they can’t physically can’t put rogue in a bad outfit, she would still rock it! a sure 10/10
namor - okayyy, king of atlantis, finally clothes fit for a king! last year namor showed up in his regular suit, which really bummed me as namor is NOT the guy who would underdress for an event, but now he actually put some effort in; while it is not great, as it’s literally just a fin-textured 2-piece with a trident, it’s a step in the right direction
wolverine - i actually am not sure if this is an official design, as it’s just logan dancing with jean in a regular black tuxedo, but it weirdly works; here’s hoping he actually gets a cool design, but i wouldn’t necessarily hate it if they stuck with the classics with him
+ bonus
(from the textless “first look” preview)
clea - full on dr. strange cosplay going on, but i have to admit - the black perfectly compliments the red cape and her hair is interesting visually, but that’s how far i’d go; it’s a glorified super hero costume and this is a private event - c’mon clea, do better (also it’s a crime that no purple was incorporated in her outfit, a crime i tell you)
bishop - so, i’m conflicted... i don’t hate it, but i don’t love it either; compared to last year this look is a godsend, but i still feel that it doesn’t capture bishop fully, like where are the futuristic elements and the iconic “M” scar?, that said it’s still a solid look and the reds really cement that “red bishop” title he’s going for
mary jane - [BIG SPOILERS AHEAD] so it was revealed that our beloved redhead is being impersonated by none other than moira herself... but she did dress exquisitely, i do have do admit; simple, but elegant
cypher - doug actually received a hellfire look, a win in my book and while it is on the uninspired side it is a step up from his boring tuxedo last year; the chains & neckpiece the are popping tho
morph - very faintly, amongst the crowd we can spot one of my favorite obscure x-men characters, benjamin deeds and he looks chic; to contrast his boyfriend he’s wearing a cyan coat, but that’s all that could be made out and i can’t wait to see him in full
hindsight - next to morph is undoubtedly his boyfriend nate; absolutely rocking that pink, to appear as a complimenting contrast to morph’s cyan; again, bias does play a slight role here, but i do want to see him in his full glory to comment more thoroughly
polaris - i was absolutely right with my predictions, polaris looks stunning and i couldn’t have expected less from the mistress of magnetism herself; a highlight of the gala for sure
sunfire - another physiological outfit, based on sunfire’s flames and obviously it’s a 10 out of 10 from me; they just know how to play around with my favorite outfit trope and i’m happy to see shiro with those black flowing lines really finishing up his explosive look off
kate pryde - i hate to confess but the red queen thing is growing on me slightly, as i don’t really see any flaws with this design; we can see very little but what we do see is very well thought out and placed, so yeah i can’t believe i’m saying this but - a good 8/10 is in order
professor x - ricocheting off of last year’s absolutely atrocious design, this year charles’ outfit was toned down and with that came coherence; again a very big step-up from last year and the biggest surprise for me - maybe another potential favorite in-the-running
shinobi shaw - the best i can say is... eh? it just looks like a rehash from last year(which wasn’t too impresive either, even if i did like it), i wish they stray from other rehashes with the major characters (which has been the case so far); benefit of the doubt, we’ll wait until we see the whole thing
mystique - so i’m not a 100% sure if that’s her, could be some obscure atlantean but due to her proximity to her wife i’d assume that’s raven; i really like this look! it’s fashionable, effortless and even if i did dig her last year “evil queen” feather gown a little more, this one is a worthy successor
destiny - not much is visible, but from what we see, even if it’s not horrible, i wish more was done - playing around with her mask, adding flair to the helmet/head area; recognisability is important but it’s not supposed to halt creativity, and we can see it hasn’t stopped them with other characters
firestar - a surprising addition to this year’s festivities, but i love that angelica is back and even if her “outfit” is just her costume, it’s still cute and the bob really suits her <3
wolfsbane - appearing in a single panel, rahne puts all her cards on the table with a simple black suit & tie combo with gold elements; maybe a bit too simple for my liking, as more “wolf” motifs could’ve been included, but still a solid look for her imo
shaman(?) - a character that is never named, who i’m assuming is shaman, but never confirmed, sitting next to rahne at the gambling table; my boy looks stylish, even if we see just a glimpse... wish he was at least named, so i know who i’m complimenting
feilong - stylish & dapper, feilong’s appearance at the gala certainly doesn’t entail anything good; at least he himself does look dashing in his simple 3-piece, with the green accent just adding a nice contrast to his red skin
mr. fantastic - whilst reed’s design isn’t anything groundbreaking, his simple suit is really charming, with the coat giving me that “scientist” vibe that is right up the man’s alley; another hit in the right direction here
black panther - again, debatable which character is actually sitting next to emma at the poker table but all signs point to the king of wakanda; we see a slight glimpse of him, but we all know t’challa knows how to dress so yet another strong male design at the party is present
shuri - as with her brother, i am unsure if this character is actually shuri but it would make sense, no? anyways, shuri’s cream dress and gold jewelry are very nice, but c’mon the princess of wakanda wearing something so boring is just not it; give me tribal patterns, bold colours, play with hairstyles and headpieces... not a bad look, just a boring one
deadpool - a cameo from the man himself, wade appears to be donning a 1800′s inspired costume, which we see from the back; i can’t really comment on the whole thing as it’s a 1-panel thing but i guess its nice?
greycrow - boring black suit. tie. fitting for a character who i myself find uninteresting as well...
stepford cuckoos - is this a step up or down from last year, i can’t tell you... this year the sisters decided to go for the “greek handmaidens” looks and with barely any accessories, this is one of the worst designs of the gala for me... such a let-down from clones of one of the most fashionable comic characters ever
banshee - yes. just yes. banshee is again, one of the most dapper men at the gala, with him really becoming one of those male fashion staples of the x-men for me; couldn’t praise it enough, even if we barely saw any of it
mr. sinister - why? just why wasn’t he included in the handbook? i absolutely REVERE how sinister went all “royal” this year, definite step-up from his last look (which i also enjoyed); blowing it out of the water, he showed last years’ professor x, magneto & monarch how it’s done - 10/10
gwenpool - magic school girl. absolutely on brand for gwen. just a big thumbs up from me
scout - gabi really took a page out of her sister’s book and showed up, looking hella good! another very solid addition to the hellfire gala line-up, can’t wait to see her explore her style more
psylocke - [edit] thank god for david nakayama, as we can finally behold kwannon in her absolutely breathtaking psychic knives dress, which shoots her straight to top 5 looks from the gala
as far as designs go, these are all that are revealed to us so far, but i can’t wait to see some of last year’s mutants & some new designs for our beloved regular heroes recieve looks to update it with some new thoughts!

BANSHEE???? THE COP?????
look, i went from the available choices, and my vote went to Beto anyway
Let's break these choices down, yeah?
Cyclops - tl;dr There are specific periods of time where Scott is "hot," and the vast majority of the time he isn't! Is he my blorbo? Yes. Do I run a sideblog where the header is his Foxy Grandpa Ass jutting out? Of course. Can I vote him in good conscience? I don't think so.
Colossus - the man spent how much time trying to fuck a fourteen year old? He heard Mutants were moving to a sex cult island and was baffled because his dead pal Jeff was a human. Pass.
Gambit - not even with Rogue's dick.
Wolverine - I only barely believe he can find the clit, and have ZERO confidence he could locate my prostate, and I'm unsure enough about his grooming habits that I wouldn't willingly put any part of myself in any part of him. Pass.
Iceman - Closeted Iceman? Maybe. But out Iceman is an overcompensating baby gay written almost exclusively by straight dudes, and I have a strict policy of never touching white gays who have "BBC" in their search history.
Warren Kenneth Worthington the Third - do you know what happens to Angel's love interests? I'd rather not be hatecrimed by Cameron Hodge for a few sweaty minutes of underwhelming halfhearted bottoming from a princess who provides the own stuffing for his pillows. Keep flying, birdboy.
Nightcrawler - I know, I know, the man is a sex icon, but I'm not getting involved in any of that family drama. If it's not his evil lesbian moms trying to kill me, it'd be his step-sisters trying to get back in his spandex. Not worth it, especially after all that shit in Way of X.
Havok - Matt Fraction's Clint Barton: The Mutant Flavor???? Listen, I adore a broken man who knows his place as much as the next nigga, don't get me wrong, but if I'm not picking Scott, I'm definitely not picking his Luigi.
I do appreciate his commitment to the bit, though.

Banshee - let's jump back to Cyclops for a minute. Without getting into shipping war bullshit, most of the times he's been "hot" are when he's playing off of Emma Frost, right? Emma's tertiary mutation is the ability to make everyone else more interesting just by association, because she's fucking great. I mean I just read an Iron Man book for her, for fuck's sake. Back in the 90's, when she was newly not-evil, she and Banshee were essentially the co-leads of Generation X, a book that, when it wasn't being the New New New Mutants, about two unreasonably sexy people who couldn't stand each other being unreasonably sexy at each other. Even putting that aside (and if you read a few issues, you'll get it), the man's spent decades dedicated to flying around with his tits out due to mysterious clothing damage, amd I appreciate that.
Sunspot - look, I fixated on him when I was nine, as the only character I could find who was like me at all, and that was ignoring all the gay subtext with his best friend even before it turned into outright queerbaiting. I grew up with him, and he's only gotten better since then. He's the only dude in my top 5 muties. He's flawless (give or take bad taste in men and a propensity for being whitewashed), he's perfect, he's hilarious, he's my vote AND yours, he's Sunspot.

Cannonball - in my seminal 2020 fic, "How Many Times Would You Say You've Been In Love," I summed Beto's Best Boy up thusly:
Sam laughed, a quiet, gentle, chuckle that crinkled the corners of his eyes, not that Roberto could bring himself to look at them. Instead his own eyes travelled everywhere else, from Sam's mess of a mop, to his strong jaw, to the gap in his front teeth, his okay-for-a-white-boy lips, the freckles that covered his nose, and ending up…
Do I love Sam as a character? Absolutely, he's one of the best. But he's not hot, he's a lapse in taste. Love conquers all, they say. 😔
Bishop - as one of exactly two Black men the poll listed, I want to give Bishop his flowers, but I have never read a good Bishop story where he wasn't awful. No baby gays, but no self-hating Black genocidaires, either.

Some changes I'd make to Fox's X-Men trilogy
Tumblr media
The X-Men franchise helped to propell future superhero films as well as becoming an iconic film brand in it's own right. That said, I've got some changes I'd make:
Tumblr media
X-Men 1. Give more attention to Rogue's character. Despite being important in the film, she (and everyone else, for that matter) plays secondary to Wolverine. It'd be interesting to see her in more scenarios that inspire her to wear gloves; with Cody, she only kissed him. Or make Mystique appear as Rogue's adoptive mother (rather than Bobby) in order to convince her that she'll never be loved as she is to leave the school, where she joins the Brotherhood, who seemingly accept her. It isn't until Magneto uses her that she realizes the deception. 2. Flesh out Storm, Beast, Cyclops, and Jean. Maybe brief flashbacks into their lives and backstories, utilizing them more and giving Cyclops and Jean more agency outside of their romance and love triangle with Wolverine. 3. Have The Brotherhood include Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, allowing Magneto to appear sympathetic to his children (particularly Wanda) and instill his beliefs in them. Maybe also include Mastermind to help manipulate more humans and mutants against each other. 4. Post-credit scene shows Magneto's threat has the UN promise him the island of Genosha.
Tumblr media
X2: X-Men United 1. Again, allow characters outside of Wolverine to develop. In this case, develop Nightcrawler, as well as addressing Mystique as his mother. Maybe have him younger in this version so he and Rogue are similar ages. I love their sibling bond in the comics! 2. Keep Stryker's religious affiliations, except perhaps make him form his own religion/cult with Catholic Kurt serving as a foil to him. 3. The X-Men are rescued by Magneto, who takes them to Genosha. Their united team includes Magneto, Wolverine, Storm, Jean, Quicksilver (desperate for approval), Mystique, Rogue, Nightcrawler, and Iceman. 4. Jason, while not killed, is psychologically abused by his father and is filled with self-loathing for his powers, which Jean and Kurt help him to slowly accept. 5. Jean doesn't die, nor is her phoenix potential shown yet. 6. Post-credits: Jason is invited to Genosha, though it's revealed he was infected with "the cure" making him no longer a mutant. It originally starts to spread as an airborne disease, but Wanda also exhibits her reality warping powers, preventing it from spreading.
Tumblr media
X-Men: The Last Stand 1. Mix "The Cure" storyline with "House of M": Finally, mutants have taken supremacy over the world, though most mutants don't realize that it's a facade. The X-Men team consists of Wolverine, Jean, Storm, Rogue, Iceman, Angel, and Nightcrawler.
2. Magneto finally seems like a better father, and we're introduced to Polaris. The Brotherhood includes Magneto's family as well as Mystique, Pyro, and Havok, who we find out to be Cyclops' brother. Havok ends up joining the X-Men. 3. While mutants rule the world, human scientists are secretly creating a cure for them, but only have one vial. They attempt to use it on Magneto (assuming that he is the cause of this), but Pietro sacrifices himself. Similar to Mystique's sacrifice, Magneto turns his back on Pietro sending Wanda into a rage. Inspired by the cure, she utters the words "No More Mutants." As we watch, reality soon goes back to normal, with most people having no recollection of the alternate reality. Here, it is revealed that most of the X-Men have lost their powers: only Wolverine, Havok, Storm, Jean, and Colossus, and Shadowcat (along with a few of the younger mutants) have their powers. 4. Post-credits: A few months later, much of the world is at a standstill. Most of the mutants are now human and integrated into human society, while the remaining mutants are continually bashed, ignored (because most agree their numbers are too small to be a severe threat), heavily monitored, or form agreements with the government in exchange for protection. During a mission to help NASA, Jean is exposed to a solar flare. When she reappears on earth, she tells Scott that she is no longer Jean: "I am Phoenix."
Lemme know what you think!
