What's your take on the Nightless City battle and JYL's death. Is WWX not responsible?

Actions aren't taken and decisions aren't made in vacuum. If you push a person to the breaking point and they snap back, their responsibility diminishes, regardless of the scale of damage that happens as a result.

Let's consider, step by step, what happens.

1. WWX is ambushed by 300 people. He is pushed and pushed, his life is threatened even though he isn't at fault. At this point, he has spent nearly two years in relative peace. At no point has he ever lost control.

JZXun went there with the express intention to kill WWX.

Jin Ling’s full-month celebration just so happened to be near, to which Jin ZiXuan actually invited Wei WuXian. Jin GuangShan wasn’t too fond of this idea to begin with, and so he suggested that Jin ZiXun use this as an opportunity, killing Wei WuXian on his way to the banquet. This way, he wouldn’t have to come to Koi Tower either.

Wei WuXian was Jiang Yanli’s shidi, and the couple was quite affectionate toward each other. Jin ZiXuan told his wife everything, no matter what a trivial matter it was. A few people were worried that he might give the plan away, causing Wei WuXian not to come, and so they had beenkeeping Jin ZiXuan in the dark. This was indeed a bit unfair.

2. He loses control when JXZuan asks him to quietly surrender and sides with his cousin. He rushes at WWX.

Jin ZiXuan and Jin ZiXun were cousins who had known each other well ever since they were young. With almost twenty years between them, at this point, it was indeed difficult for him to defend an outsider. And, in truth, he didn’t like Wei WuXian as a person either.

Collecting himself, he spoke, “Tell Wen Ning to stop first. Don’t let him continue his rampage and make the situation worse than it already is."

Wei WuXian’s voice was coarse, “… Why don’t you make them stop first?”

Relentless shouts and roars came from all around them. Jin ZiXuan raged, “Why are you still so stubborn at such a time? When everyone calms down, you can follow me back to Koi Tower to explain things and answer some questions. With everything clear, if you aren’t the one who did it, of course you’ll be fine!”

Wei WuXian, “Tell him to stop? As soon as I tell Wen Ning to stop right now, the arrows would fly straight at my heart and I wouldn’t even die a whole corpse! And you think I could explain things at Koi Tower?”

Jin ZiXuan, “They would not!”

Wei WuXian laughed, “They would not? How can you ensure it? Jin ZiXuan, I have a question—when you invited me at first, did you really not know about their plan to kill me?!”

Jin ZiXuan paused for a second before he raged, “You! Wei WuXian, are… are you mad?!” Wei WuXian was suppressing a blazing flame of hatred.

His voice was cold, “Jin ZiXuan, move away right now. I won’t touch you, but you’re not going to provoke me either.”

Seeing that he still refused to yield, Jin ZiXuan suddenly lunged forward, as if trying to hold him down, “Why can’t you just back off for once?! A-Li is still…” Just as he reached toward Wei WuXian, he heard a strange, heavy noise.

WWX was right. The intention was to kill him. He had every right to view JZXuan with suspicion as well. They have never exchanged a kind word with each other. WWX is facing an ambush. JZXuan can't promise him safety at all.

Did WWX lose control, yes. Was he at fault? No. Actions and decisions aren't made in vacuum. WE have proof that JZXuan isn't involved in the murder plot because WE know JZXun and JGS didn't tell him.

WWX doesn't know.

As WQ points out, they don't even ask WWX about the rebound curse marks. Not even JZXuan does. They're there to kill and nothing else.

3. After this, we have JZXuan's death and WWX's own reaction to it. We have WN and WQ paralizing him and sacrificing themselves to spare him and the others. The companions he has known for nearly two years, two people he gave up nearly everything to protect, are apparently killed.

4. Jins, as we know, provoked WN into losing control. It was a great tactic to get all sects own board. But WWX knew what was happening in reality to an extent.

He should’ve understood long ago. No matter what he did, not a single good word would come out of these people’s mouths. When he won, others feared; when he lost, others rejoiced.

He was cultivating the crooked path either way, so what exactly did the years of persistence mean? What exactly were they for?”

What he did or didn't do didn't matter in the end.

5. Four Sects and thousands of people gathered at Nightless City to scatter the ashes of an innocent woman they murdered. It was a spectacle. They didn't have a single thing to hold against WQ. No proof that she had killed anyone, no tales of her participating in war, nothing. They killed her because of her name. Without any justice. And all Four Sects witnessed it and only LWJ defended them.

Actions and decisions don't happen in vacuum. The sects had already tried to kill WWX, they had already killed WQ and WN, and now they were pledging to kill him again and his people, thing time with an army and full invasive force.

WWX himself highlights this effectively.

Wei WuXian, “Then let me ask you, Sect Leader Jin, at Qiongqi Path, who was the one being ambushed? And who was the one to kill? Who was the main schemer? And who was the one being schemed against? In the end, just who was the one that came to provoke me first?”

Bravening up, they shouted, “Even if Jin ZiXun was the one who schemed to ambush you first, you shouldn’t have been so heartless and kill so many lives!”

“Oh,” Wei WuXian helped him analyze, “If he wanted to to kill me, he didn’t have to think about whether it was a fatal blow or not, and if I died, it’d be my own bad luck. If I wanted to protect myself, however, I had to think about this and that not to harm, unable to take even a single strand of hair away from him? In conclusion, you all could pull a siege on me, but I’m not allowed to fight back, am I right?”

He is pointing out one injustice after another here. But even if he was silent and didn't confront them, even if he slinked back to the BM without venting his rage at the injustice, it wouldn't help. They planned to invade and kill him the very next day.

And despite this, he didn't attack first.

Before he could finish, he suddenly felt something at his throat. A dull ache came from his chest. He looked down to see a fletched arrow in the center of his chest. The head of the arrow was buried between two of his ribs.

BETWEEN TWO RIBS. It was aimed at the heart. It was aimed to kill. If that person was skilled, WWX would've died. Without warning, when his guard was down.

Exactly what do people expect here?

6. JYL's death, when you remove emotion from the scene, is an accident. She stepped into a battlefield. (I don't wanna know how a woman who is canonically so weak that tossing flowers exhausted her managed to travel from Koi Tower to Nightless City just a month after giving birth.)

So, you have a traumatized and despirate WWX. Someone who knows that the cultivation world is punishing and pushing. His cultivation requires emotional and mental stability. For all LWJ says he will lose control, WWX only does that when he is under extraordinary amount of stress. The kind of stress that no one would be able to handle. That would send anyone into qi deviation. Imagine powerful sects plotting to murder you and spin a web around you while you're trying to protect people.

If the stress doesn't happen, he doesn't lose control. From QQ Pass to Nightless City, WWX is pushed to the corner relentlessly.

EVEN then, half mad with all of the strain, HE STOPS when JYL asks him to. The moment his emotional stability is regained, he regains control. And he only loses control again when JYL is killed in front of his eyes.

AGAIN, he is attacked when his back his turned, when he is distracted.

You can't examine this situation isolatedly. Every time, WWX is responding. He isn't attacking first, he is always been attacked first.

Tldr: I believe there are some decisions WWX could've taken to perhaps delay things but the moment JGS and JGY decided WWX should be killed, the game was set. There was no escaping.

The difference is that WWX just didn't quietly submit and let them kill him. He fought tooth and nail to live. Every time he fought to live, they tried another way to compromise him.

WWX was one of the actors but none of this would've happened if JGS hadn't decided that WWX needed to be killed.

I wanna ask again, what was he supposed to do? In hindsight, you can think up 100s of scenarios and ways to avoid things that happened. But in the moment, when faced with people itching to kill him, what was he supposed to do?

If he didn't confront them at Nightless City, the sects would've marched to BMs. If they marched, the Wens would die. But even confronting them and pointing out the hypocrisy didn't help because by that point, it was futile. There was no decision WWX could've taken then that wouldn't have ended in disaster.

Should he have just submitted to death to appease people who were clearly wrong?

ok i’m backwards sometimes and tend to read fanfic before consuming the source media but i finally read mdzs so i can make this post now

so. i’ve seen some canon divergence fics where the ambush at qiongqi path does Not go as planned in several ways - wwx avoids it entirely, wwx manages to stop wen ning before he gets to jin zixuan, wwx takes the hit for jzx and gets hurt himself... anyway it’s all good but i would like. to propose another option, this time optimized for Sheer Chaos

the ambush starts the same as canon; there’s archers, there’s jzx showing up fashionably late and with 0 idea what’s happening, there’s wwx and wn absolutely losing it

wen ning attacks jzx. wwx notices this in time, pulls jzx out of the way, gets hurt instead. listen i KNOW this is done before. wait for it

IMMEDIATELY after this happens, jzx gets hit by a stray arrow or two, aimed at where wwx was just standing

it’s not, like, an immediately fatal wound, but it’s serious enough

wei wuxian is currently hyped up on adrenaline and paranoia, and also losing blood fairly quickly

he sees jin zixuan, unconscious or close to it, with an arrow stuck in, idk, his chest or something, and the conclusion he jumps to is “oh, they want him dead too”

“i can’t let shijie become a widow”

so he grabs jzx, and wen ning grabs him, and they all go Straight Back To The Burial Mounds

wwx passes out before they get home, so wen qing is greeted by the sight of her brother, obviously upset, holding two (2) unconscious bleeding cultivators, one of which is The Actual Heir To The Lanling Jin Sect

wen qing: “i don’t get paid enough for this”

so. jzx wakes up first, due to several reasons including: he wasn’t as badly injured, he still has his golden core, and he doesn’t have needles currently stuck in him due to being a Known Terrible Patient

jin zixuan’s current situation: he is sitting. in a cave in the Burial Mounds. with 1) his adopted brother-in-law (currently unconscious), 2) Wen Qing (incredibly tired of this shit), and 3) Wen Ning (inherently terrifying but also currently incredibly guilty about what happened)

it is... awkward.

jin zixuan gets the HECK out of there as fast as he can

unfortunately he can’t, like, actually leave, both because he feels obligated to argue clear things up with wwx regarding what just happened, and because he’s not healed yet and wen qing refuses to let him leave until she knows he’s gonna actually make it back

so jin zixuan proceeds to have the most awkward few days of his life, as he’s stuck in the frickin Burial Mounds with a bunch of people who his sect captured and enslaved and horribly mistreated, and whose hospitality he is now relying on

he also makes friends with a-yuan, who’s very worried about wwx

a-yuan inadvertently gives him a lot of feelings about a-ling

jin zixuan isn’t really sure what to do about that

ANYWAY after a bunch of super awkward dinner conversations, wen qing brings wwx out of his medically induced needle coma, and he and jzx finally get to compare notes

when wen qing finally releases him, he leaves with a decent understanding of the qiongqi path incident from wwx’s perspective, aka It Wasn’t Really His Fault, and having tentatively convinced wwx that jzx being injured by the jin sect was unintentional

jzx is understandably conflicted over the whole thing; jiang yanli trusts wwx, and he has to admit that wwx was most likely the wronged party in that situation, but... it’s his family? his sect?? and now he’s being told to believe that they’re cruel enough to lie to their own family and murder people in cold blood

so he heads back home, sort of hoping that maybe he can work this out, convince his father and cousin to be reasonable about this, and maybe?? clear wwx’s name??

however.

jin zixuan has been gone for several days

and it’s not like lanling jin sect has been sitting around doing nothing in that time

what i’m saying is

jin zixuan shows up to koi tower. RIGHT in the middle of an emergency conference. where jing guangshan is leading the drafting of a message to the burial mounds, calling for the surrender of the wen sect’s leaders

in response to the murder of jin zixuan by the yiling patriarch, wei wuxian

and thus. chaos ensues

(sort of based on an RP a friend and I have been picking at for a decade) WWX has always been a sick child. He spent the years since the formation of his 'defective' core in hospital, or bed ridden. His only company came in the form of his adoptive family, his doctor Madam Lan, and at times, her two sons LWJ and LXC. By 15, he's little more than a skeleton, and while he's managed to form a crush on LWJ, he's too guilt ridden from the inevitability of death [1/?] 👑

👑 to say anything. Meanwhile, LWJ finds that he has feelings deeper than friendship for WWX, and he swears to him that he'll find a cure for his illness. WWX plays along, because what's the harm? There will never be a cure for a core so strong it kills its host. On his 16th birthday, a family friend, Su She attends the gathering. WWX feels well enough to attend, in a wheelchair and closely watched by his protective adoptive parents. Under the guise of wanting to take [2/?] 👑

👑 WWX for a walk after dinner, he brings him to the pier, giving him a bracelet he says he made himself, for his 'only friend.' WWX, not wanting to be rude, thanks him and puts it on, only to immediately feel his core being sucked out. He screams, and LWJ, the first one to arrive watches as the bracelet explodes, and Su She is whisked away by shadows. The incident speeds up WWX's decent into death, and the family believes they have only days left. LWJ, determined, finds [3/?] 👑

👑 the pieces of the bracelet and manages to figure out the array used to create it. He modifies it just in time. The jewelery now absorbs and neutralizes the excess spiritual energy, saving WWX's body from further harm. WWX manages to live a normal life for a few years; by the time he's 22, he's been dating LWJ for 4 years, going to university, become one of the top 4 Cultivators in the country due to his genius. The suppression jewelry ocer time has started to lose [4\?] 👑

👑 effectiveness, and he is now adorned with multiple rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces... Changing them so often, JYL spends hours a week making more. But life is good. Until he meets a little boy, Wen Yuan and his cousins WN and WQ. Running from WRH, who wants WY due to his cultivation potential. With the Wens being the most powerful cultivator family, there's no where they can run. WWX only sees people in need, and makes the mistake of helping them. He sheds some of his [5/?] 👑

👑 jewelery, and fends off the attack dog XY. He gets them to safety in lotus pier, immediately falling ill from using his cultivation. Later, he's happy to find that WRH is no longer after WY. Now, WRH knows about WWX, and his power and wants it for himself. With him being the target, WWX becomes even more self sacrificing, eventually nearing death to the point WQ can't even help him. Despite this, LWJ still promises to save him, and even proposes. The proposal falls flat, and [6/?] 👑

👑 and WWX says anything he can think of to be hurtful before leaving and refusing to see him again. Almost within a week, LWJ is set in an arranged marriage, and heart hurting so much, WWX seeks him out, meeting him in secret and sleeping with him. Telling him he loves him so much, and how sorry he is, but they can't be together. The end of their night is crowned with WY being kidnapped and WWX sacrificing his life to save him. When he reaches the Lans, [7/?]

👑 he begs them to save WY, though it's far too late for WWX. He takes his last breath in LWJ's arms. Unable to accept it, LWJ calls to the shadows for XXC and SL, beings of resentful energy that have served his family for eons. "If we save him, he may never be your Wei Wuxian again." XXC warns. "But he'll live." LWJ replies, letting them take WWX away to the burial mounds to revive WWX as one of their own. [end] 👑

I turned away from a fic when the author note said it was set in cql universe because 'wwx's death was too vague in the novel'

which annoys me because the death was explained twice. Wei Wuxian destroyed the seal to prevent anyone bad from using it. Lost control of the corpses, got torn apart and died horribly.

He died saving people from his weapon. Which to me will always beat the "Suicidal jump of a cliff, on no, now I die to prevent jc from killing both me and lan zhan anyway"

:) I agree! I don't hate cql but I can't really say I trust something that comes from a 'cql was better in terms of story telling/plot/narrative' place. I basically watch cql bc I like Xiao Zhan, Wang Haoxuan, Wang Yibo, Song Ji Yang, Liu Haikuan & Zhu Zanjin and uh... not for the story...(¯ . ¯٥) lol

Novel WWX disingenuously gets dismissed as an unreliable narrator a lot, but the only area where he regularly is an unreliable narrator is when it comes to the Jiangs & softening their treatment of him. That's the only reason I'd say the circumstances of his death can appear more vague in the novel- bc he's the one relaying them and downplaying it. So although it's less vague in cql where jc clearly forces him to die to save LWJ it also drops the significance of WWX's choice to not use the seal again and then, as he sees the inevitability of his defeat & death without its power, destroy it to prevent it from falling into the the hands of those who would misuse it against the people.

I also think WWX & Wen Ning's discussion of WWX's death in the novel gets misinterpreted quite a bit. WWX's words are taken at face value and whilst WWX doesn't feel like he owes Jiang Clan anything in his new life, he still doesn't speak about the shitty way they treated him. He doesn't tell LWJ for example that he broke his foot climbing a tree at night because jiang cheng threatened to set dogs on him.

Looking at his legs, Lan WangJi asked, “Why did you climb the tree at night?”

Wei WuXian bent down in laughter, “There’s no why. You know. I love fooling around outside at night. Haha.”

So in this scene Wen Ning's reaction is to me the more telling one. & WN clearly calls bs on WWX dismissing/downplaying jc's role. WWX himself doesn't argue and just shuts down the conversation.

“Wen Ning whispered, “Sect Leader Jiang, Jiang Cheng, brought a siege upon the Burial Mounds. And he killed you.”

Wei WuXian, “I’ll have to clarify this one. He didn’t kill me. I died from a backfire.”

Wen Ning finally looked up at him, “But, Sect Leader Jiang clearly…”

Wei WuXian, “Nobody can walk safely on a single-plank bridge for their whole life. It couldn’t be helped.”

Wen Ning seemed as if he wanted to sigh, but he had no breath to let out.”

Poor Wen Ning. </3

WWX's death is also obliquely addressed when he hears children playing as cultivators in the street:

“Someone else barged in, “No. I’m the SanDu ShengShou. I’m the most powerful.”

The “YiLing Patriarch” replied as if he understood everything, “Jiang Cheng, how is it possible for you to be better than me? Is there even one time that you didn’t lose against me? How do you dare to say that you’re the most powerful? Aren’t you embarrassed?”

“Jiang Cheng”, “Hmph, I can’t be better than you? Do you remember how you died?”

The light smile on Wei WuXian’s face dissipated at once. It was as if he had suddenly been pricked by a poisonous needle. A faint, sharp pain came from all around his body.”

('Pricked by a needle' is totally a common expression so I'm absolutely not saying this is on purpose but I think it's ironic that it's "poisonous" when jc's sword is called "三毒 sandu –three poisons" lolol)

Anyway as it stands, we may not be shown exactly how WWX's death happened in the novel, but I don't think that makes it vague. I mean we clearly see the circumstances jc created that led to it: “if not for Jiang Cheng making a plan that aimed at Wei WuXian’s weaknesses, the siege might not have succeeded”. A siege's worth of ambitious cultivators were also ultimately ok w jc taking the credit for the death of the Yiling Patriarch, so clearly jc enthusiastically applied himself to the task (and was close enough to get his hands on Chenqing first which we know JGY wanted as well). Whether he got close enough to hurt him or close enough for WWX to realize death was imminent it follows the same line of forced self destruction as cql just on a grander more meaningful scale. Much more in line with WWX's character.

Chengning story thoughts: WN is starting to lose his emotions. JC unknowingly is helping them resurface.

Wen Ning never approved in coming back to life. He had hated it. He had hated the looks of fear and disgust. He had hated having strength that he would forever have to be cautious to use. Hated that his sense of touch and taste had dulled.

But he couldn’t hate the people who brought him back. The ones that loved him so much they defied the odds to bring his consciousness back. He should be grateful, he knows and he is, but it’s getting harder to even feel let alone emote his feelings.

He once thought he was just maturing, becoming more sure of himself, but now he’s realizing his emotions are just leaving him. He doesn’t feel happiness, sadness, or even hatred as he used to. He doesn’t stutter, fidget or even unconsciously move anymore either.

This is worse than being dead, but he still doesn’t want to die.

He’s not quite sure why he even wants to continue living in such a state. Lan Yuan and Lan Jingyi don’t really need him on their night hunts anymore even if they assured him they enjoy his company and help. Wei Wuxian had made it clear he wanted him to find his own path and had even forbidden him from calling him Master Wei. Second Master Lan seemed to also find his presence uncomfortable? Mildly inconvenient? He wasn’t quite sure where he stood with him even now. Not to mention his run-ins with Sect Leader Jiang.

Sect Leader Jiang, the hot tempered leader of Lotus Pier, still hates him and makes sure he knows it. He’s not quite sure how they keep running into each other, outside of night hunts, but every time they do he was sure to get berated by the man. From his appearance to his methods Sect Leader Jiang always has a harsh comment to make.

It stirred something in him.

He wasn’t quite certain what it was, but he wanted to hold on to anything that caused him to feel more.

Maybe that’s why he’s currently tailing the junior quartet again. He knows wherever young master Jin is his overly protective uncle wouldn’t be too far behind. Hiding in the shadows waiting for anything to go wrong and then to swoop in with Zidian and Sandu to destroy the threat.

However, lately he’s been confined to the sidelines as the juniors have become more confident and capable in their abilities. They now easily cover each others weak points and strategize more effectively then when they all first started night hunting together.

Now it’s only once every so often that he and Sect Leader Jiang intervene and it seems this night wouldn’t be one that they do.

“Come down from there they don’t need us this time.”

He was perched up on a branch and gave a quick glance down to the noticeably impatient man, before returning to examine the battle.

“Things could still go wrong Sect Leader Jiang.”

He knows that will get a rise out of him, but he was also still worried for the juniors safety.

“Are you questioning my judgement Ghost General? Or are you that doubtful of your little Lans abilities?”

Wen Ning felt a tingle of amusement. His little Lans? Well he guessed he was unofficially one of their guardians.

“No, just being cautious Sect Leader Jiang. Thank you for your faith in the the Lan juniors abilities.”

He forced his face muscles to give a smile to show he meant what he said.

He heard a straggled noise before he felt Zidian wrap around him and pull him down.

Now he wasn’t sure what he did to offend Sect Leader Jiang so much so to feel the sting of Zidian, but he didn’t quite mind. He could have easily dodged, but he wanted the shocks from the spiritual weapon go through him. It relieved him to be able to still feel something even if it was unpleasant.

“You should be careful with the faces you make.”

He jolted himself back from his thoughts to look up. Maybe he’s also losing his sight, because he swears he sees a faint blush marking Sect Leader Jiangs face that’s being illuminated by the light of the moon.

“I was only trying to smile for you Sect Leader Jiang.”

Yes, he’s certain his sight is going awry as he sees the blush getting darker and the tips of the ears go red.

He also feels a slight pang in his head of another emotion that he can’t identify. Perhaps it was from the fall and the shocks.

“That’s not necessary.”

Harsh as always.

“Forgive me, I will not smile anymore to you if it offends.”

Maybe it really did offend him. It would be unnerving to have a corpse smile at you in hindsight.

“That’s not what I meant! I mean you... you can smile at me if you like, but don’t force yourself if it’s not something you want to do.”

Oh.

“I can’t smile naturally anymore Sect Leader Jiang. I have to will myself to do so as such I am always deliberate when I do.”

A courtesy name for a courtesy name that is only fair. He saw Jiang Wanyin bristle at the permission and then he began to snicker.

“I am honored to be allowed to address you as such, Wen Qionglin.”

Sarcastic jerk, but he doesn’t remember his courtesy name ever sounding so nice before. It was as if Jiang Wanyin took care in saying it.

“As am I, Jiang Wanyin.”

Oh, he certainly looked better without a scowl.

He is still on the ground with Zidian wrapped around him and Jiang Wanyins face bright red with a look he has never seen before being directed towards himself.

It felt like time had stopped with them just staring at each other, before Zidian returned to its master who then offered a hand for Wen Ning to pull himself up.

That wasn’t necessary, but he took the offered hand and if he might have lingered a bit before letting go for being able to enjoy the warmth and slight smile Jiang Wanyin was giving him nobody needed to know.

ONE

So Wei Wuxian isn’t really a wizard, is the thing. Like, he does the wizard magic, and apparently he has strong Wizard Vibes because wherever he travels, people ask him if he can solve their magical bullshit problems, but he’s, like, barely a wizard. He’s an inventor, technically, except that a few years back some stuff went explosively awry while he worked with this traveling show and–yeah. So he’s working as a wizard because, hey, he can cast Magic Missile and he needs to eat and he’s an Evocation specialist, anyway, so it’s not like he’s out here making food from rocks. He’s hired on with a couple other random jackasses, a fighter who took a dislike to Wei Wuxian right off the bat and a cleric with a bad temper and an itchy Sacred Flame finger, and they’re doing a job for some dwarf, or whatever. The dwarf has a guy hired on as muscle, but he doesn’t look like much, all wide eyes and baby face. He calls himself Qionglin, no last name, and stares at Wen Qing like he’s never seen a cleric before, and Jiang Cheng spends the entire trip to Phandolin messing with his whip, which is the stupidest weapon Wei Wuxian has ever seen.

Well, then everything immediately goes horribly wrong, though, and turns out that Jiang Cheng is pretty okay with that whip. Qionglin (Wei Wuxian spoke to the man all of one time, but he was sweet, if a little awkward) gets himself kidnapped by a bunch of goblins, and their employer is gods-know-where with whatever a Black Spider is, and suddenly this very boring escort mission is a very not boring rescue mission.

There’s a skeleton in the cave. Wei Wuxian takes an umbrella from it, and it crumbles into dust beneath its red robe. There’s a very annoyed man with a sword who calls himself Song Lan and speaks in static, and he’s somehow not the weirdest part of this whole day.

Phandolin doesn’t survive its brush with the Zidian Gauntlet, and neither does Qionglin. Wen Qing screams when he dies, and Wei Wuxian grabs her under the arms with Jiang Cheng and books it for the empty well in Song Lan’s wake, and they just hide.

And then they go to the goddamn moon, apparently.

TWO

The goddamn moon is run by an older man with hair still a glossy black, toying with a beautifully painted white fan in his hand. He calls himself the Director and–after some testing–hires them more or less on the spot. Something flickers over his face when Wen Qing, bemused by her own upset, makes an offhand mention of a man named Qionglin who died when the Gauntlet brought down so much lightning that it turned Phandolin into black glass. But it’s not Wei Wuxian’s problem, so he doesn’t worry himself over it too much. He takes the payment offered to him by the Director’s aide, a blindfolded, stunningly handsome man in Bureau blue and white who rests his hand on his own chest and says “Xiao Xingchen” and not another word.

The Bureau is–weird. They’ve got a giant jellyfish and a store run by–something Wei Wuxian Does Not Trust and a dorm. Wei Wuxian laughs and kicks Jiang Cheng cheerfully in the ankle and says “Just like college, huh?” and Jiang Cheng gives him a dark look and snaps “I never went to college.”

“Yeah,” Wei Wuxian says, blinking. “Me neither.”

Whatever. They go on a train adventure and there’s a kid, a kid who blinks and stares at Wei Wuxian like he’s seen a goddamn ghost and immediately walks up to introduce himself as Lan Sizhui, boy detective.

Wei Wuxian fucking loves this kid. He’s not sure why this wide-eyed fifteen-year-old latched onto him so hard, but he’s smart, funny, loyal, and extremely easy to pick on. 13/10 child rating, in Wei Wuxian’s book.

(Sizhui, for his part, more or less kicks down the door to his father’s offices in the Astral Plane the second the Reclaimers are gone and shouts “I HAVE A LEAD ON WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WORLD.”)

(His father, Lan Wangji, the Grim Reaper, is very interested to hear all about it–especially when his son casually name-drops three of the biggest bounties that the Raven King, his adoptive elder brother, has ever sent him after, with the exception of that absolutely insufferably sweet-tempered lich Wen Ning.)

THREE

So…the Crystal Kingdom.

Is it Wei Wuxian’s finest hour, shouting obscure tentacle-related threats at the second crystal construct they’ve seen in the past twenty minutes? No, probably not. But it’s been a stressful day, they’re already down one Regulator and Song Lan is fuck-knows-where with Mianmian and, again, this is the second menacing crystal construct they’ve seen in twenty minutes. Or maybe it’s the same one?

Whatever, doesn’t matter. They’re here to hunt down Meng Yao, a scientist who’s been dicking around with some seriously ill-advised necromancy and also the Philosopher’s Stone, and a crystal construct or two isn’t going to stop them.

Wei Wuxian actually physically cannot help himself, though, when the Reapers appear in the mirror, a matched set of beautiful men, and he grins broadly at the one glaring at him most viciously. They get let go on a technicality, along with a conduit still containing Meng Shi’s memory of a vision beyond the cosmos, and Meng Yao leaves with his life and not much more.

Later, Lan Wangji is absolutely betrayed by the realization that his brother willfully set him up to be the primary go-between for the completely breathtaking deeply irritating wizard-by-way-of-death-criminal. And that’s before the whole lich revelation. (He does get a kiss, though, after he watches his brother pulled under by the Hunger. That’s nice. He hopes Wei Wuxian will mitigate the death crimes now that they’re dating.)

FOUR

The seven Relics are as follows:

The Zidian Gauntlet, which can generate a lightning blast so powerful that it can obliterate an entire city. (Jiang Cheng–he watched the others try to lay in protections, try to make their Relics harmless, and he knew it wouldn’t work. All the Gauntlet does is damage. It can melt a city down to black glass, but it can’t be twisted, it can’t be made into any more of a nightmare than it already is. He’s a fighter. He knows all about damage, knew all about what he was making. That doesn’t mean it didn’t kill him by inches to watch it leave a path of destruction–so much that his beloved jiejie tried to seal it away.)

The Oculus, which can make any construct real. (Xiao Xingchen–Nie Huaisang didn’t take everything. He doesn’t remember the mission, or his own past. Something strange got confused in the process, and he lost most of his speech. But he remembers how to fight, handles his sword as cleanly and effectively as ever, and he remembers that he doesn’t think much of Nie Huaisang’s combat skills. Or maybe it’s just really obvious that Nie Huaisang isn’t much of a fighter. Regardless, Xiao Xingchen insisted on accompanying him, before–before. Then they went into the Felicity Wilds, and…Xue Yang is honestly delighted. He’s never managed to ruin someone so badly on the way into Wonderland before. It’s just a shame that Nie Huaisang sent Xiao Xingchen away before they reached the doors.)

The Healer’s Sash, which can manipulate natural forces like the wind, the tides, and tectonic plates just as easily as it can manipulate a heartbeat or a pair of lungs. (Wen Qing–she prays to Pelor, the Dawnfather, the healer and Lord of Light, but she’s long since lost her faith in him as anything but a contracted boss. It’s a shock to everyone including her when she’s granted a right arm made of glass and magic after losing it. She was so determined to make a Relic that could be used for good, but–well. She supposes she should have known better.)

The Philosopher’s Stone, which can more or less transform anything into anything. (Jiang Yanli–she’s a Transmutation wizard, she’s been feeding the crew of the Starblaster for a hundred years on whatever she can pull together. If the right person found the Stone, it would have ended world hunger. The wrong person found the stone. Jiang Yanli tried her damnedest to hunt it down, but she found the Gauntlet first, and, well–she already became a lich to stop one younger brother from doing it. It’s not a struggle to decide that she’s going to take responsibility for saving Jiang Cheng from his own guilt. Then things go horribly wrong, and she spends the next twelve years in an umbrella.)

The Temporal Chalice, which offers complete control over time. (Wen Ning–he was a strict scholar until his sister was contacted about the IPRE’s creation, but he always did want to travel, and his theories about bonds were too good for Xiao Xingchen to pass up having on his crew. Everything he’s done since they lost their home system has been about trying not to leave his family, about trying for second chances, he became a lich for them, he’s done everything to stay with them, of course his Relic is a second chance generator.)

The Animus Flute, which offers control over the spirits of the dead and, in the hands of a sufficiently competent expert, the living. (Wei Wuxian–he’s watched his brother, his sister, his friends, die so many times. He’s terrified of immortality, but he’s most terrified of being alone. He meant to make something that could keep the dead present, so that they would never have to fear being left behind again. Watching it rip Jiang Cheng’s soul clean out of his body in Xue Yang’s hands is the worst thing Wei Wuxian can remember, even after everything is over.)

The Bulwark, which Nie Huaisang never did explain to anyone, but took the shape of a hand-painted fan. (Nie Huaisang lost the only person who mattered to him when the Hunger ate their home, and then as he slowly, painstakingly, rebuilt something like a family, he had to watch them suffer and die for a hundred years. And then he watched them win, and grieve like dying all over again for the winning. He’s sorry they suffered for his actions. He’s not sorry for what he did.)

FIVE

Wen Zhuliu didn’t mean to make his whole plane give up. But he had spent his whole life being used, and it all just seemed so pointless. It all just seemed so pointless. There was always someone stronger, always something bigger, always a rule he couldn’t break, always something, and he started talking, started telling people as much, and--

Wen Qing is about the farthest thing in the fucking world from a peacemaker by nature, if you ask her, but she’s a healer first, last, and most of all. And, she thinks as she watches the sun sink with a very tired man crumbling away at her side, she might be the only person in the worlds who ever noticed that Wen Zhuliu needed a healer.

(They aren’t from the same plane, but--some of the others have found distant family, on their new home. It’s an unanswerable question, if they might have been family, a few dimensions removed. Wen Ning still thinks about it.)

Ch: Except for ME, apparently! But we’re still magical girls fighting demented flying teddy bears that spawn when teenagers start angsting. And I’m just…hanging out. As a witch. Which is Candeloro’s pet for some reason? DO I HAVE THAT RIGHT?!

Op: Looks like.

Ok: You also still seem to have that thing for cheese.

Ch: Oh, great. AT LEAST THAT’S STILL AROUND! EVERYTHING MUST BE PERFECTLY NORMAL THAN!

H: Also, Kyubey is there, but seems to have lost his voice.

Ca: It’s an improvement.

Ch: Seriously, what the HELL is going on?!

Op: Do you need to take a break?

Ch: I…No, I’ll be…I’ll be fine. This is just weirding me out.

=long pause=

Ok: So, hey, Candy. About that towel…

Ca: Oh, I knew you were going to bring that up.

Op: Looks like you’ve been relegated to being Ms. Fanservice.

Ch: Just…Just hit Play. Maybe it’ll give us an explanation.

G: Is this a bad time to point out that hairstyle actually looks really good?

Ca: It did get me a lot of attention. Of course, having magic made it much easier to maintain.

Op: I guess that’s why we look so fresh all of the time.

Ch: Great. On top of everything else I am also apparently an idiot that eats inanimate objects.

H: Wait. Nightmare? Is that what the teddy bears are called?

Op: Sure look…Whoa, wait.

Ok: They knew what they were doing.

Ch: And sometime animators take advantage of that big studio money to pump out whatever drug-induced fantasy that they ever had.

Op: Oh, hey! This version of you actually got over that guy!

Ok: “Captain Oblivious.” Heh, yup. You go, me.

G: And to think, so much trouble could have been avoided if he had just seen the cutie right in front of him.

=Oktavia loops an arm around Ophelia’s shoulders and snuggles up to her=

Ok: I like to think that it turned out all right in the end. Even this version of me agrees!

Ch: Except for him. Kinda serves him right.

G: I don’t know. I feel kind of bad talking bad about him like this. I mean, being a little oblivious isn’t really a bad thing, and he did lose a lot of important people to him in a very short period of time.

Ch: Well, when you put it like that…

Op: Yo, hey, not to change the subject or anything, but are those ballerinas that she’s got projected on the side of the building kickboxing? Because that’s honestly kind of hot.

H: Of course you would find violent dancing hot.

Op: I am what I am, and make no apologies.

G: At least these ones aren’t made of cum.

Ca: Oh, my God.

H: A moment ago you were complaining about not being in it!

Op: Figure-skating, yeah! Damned good, at that. Look at that spin!

Ca: I never learned figure-skating. I mean, I can skate, but nothing like this, though I suppose I have the athletic ability, and-Okay, I just exploded out of myself.

G: That outfit is pretty cool. Um, Candy? You wouldn’t mind if I asked…

Ca: Oh, fine. I suppose it’s thematically appropriate.

=Candeloro transforms into her Puella Magi uniform, complete with the hair. Gretchen cheers=

Ok: That was way quicker than the movie. And…damn.

Ca: You can stop staring at my breasts now.

Ok: I mean, sure, I can…

=Candeloro sighs and changes back. Oktavia and Gretchen both boo=

Ch: We went going through a rough patch. We had some things we needed to come to terms with. Making pleasant associations helped.

Op: I mostly do hip-hop, but I do something similar to that when I pole-dance. It’s a lot more complex, though.

H: I bet it is.

Op: Have fun with that mental image! Still, this is giving me ideas, especially that arm thing. I think I pull that off with my illusions. Maybe it’s time to diversify-WHOA!

Ch: Why did you go all sketchy and scary?

Ca: Why did I explode out of myself twice?

Ok: Oh, okay! Here we go!

=Gretchen starts laughing=

G: Oh, my God! You’re doing Ophelia’s usual dance!

Op: I’ll say! Nice windmills, smooth transitions from palms to forearms.

Op: Duh.

Ok: And now I’m running. You know, I can’t help but feel that this me is sort of flexing on me specifically with the whole leg thing.

H: Has anyone else noticed that so far we have all ripped out of ourselves in order to transform?

Ok: That outfit is hot, though. And-Okay, that ass shot was on purpose!

Ca: Be thankful it’s not as obsessed with your butt as it is with my boobs.

Ok: No way! I wanna see it more! C’mon, zoom in on those cheeks!

Op: I strongly agree.

H: Oh, here’s me. This should be good.

G: It’s actually pretty lovely. And you do look like you’re having fun with it.

H: You know, this isn’t bad. But what am I supposed to be doing?

Op: It’s…kind of interpretive freeform, but I’m seeing some ballet elements in there as well.

H: Huh.

Op: You think of giving it a shot? Because I have someone I could call.

H: Thank you, but no. Maybe.

Op: Well, think about it.

H: I’m also tearing out of myself, I see. Oh, and that stupid clock again!

G: This is great. Can we see that part again?

Ok: You know you’re next, right?

G: Oh. Oh, no.

Op: This…I’m not sure what you’d call this.

Ok: Other than adorable.

Op: I mean, other than the Can-Can bit, not really. It’s more cute poses than anything.

H: I think it’s fine.

G: I’m not watching. Is it over, yet?

Op: Speaking for yourself. There was dancing!

Ca: You know, if you guys keep this up, then we’ll never get through the film.

G: Okay, that is it!

=Gretchen suddenly ties up Homulilly and Charlotte up with her legs and lifts them fully off the couch into the air. She sits there with her arms crossed and the two of them suspended=

G: No more tickling, or I start tickling everybody! And I have way more limbs to do it with than all of you combined!

Ok: Is that a threat or a promise?

Ch: I’m sorry, I’m sorry! Put me down!

G: Fine! Now, behave!

=Gretchen plops Homulilly and Charlotte back down into their seats and lets them go. Then she blinks and turns to Oktavia=

G: Wait, do you want to be tickled?

Ok: Well…

Op: Better not. This is an egg you do not want to crack.

G: You guys and your fetishes.

Ok: I am literally half fish, okay? We had to get creative!

Ca: Okay, I’m unpausing the movie, if it’ll get you to stop!

Op: You’re the one who literally busted out your and Charly’s bedroom get-up.

Ch: Not really. It usually has less-

Ca: UNPAUSING NOW!

Ok: Team pose!

Op: They always come this close to showing us what’s under those skirts.

Ch: They’re being cheeky, all right.

Ok: That pose is awesome, though. We should do that for real!

Op: Can’t really use it ourselves.

Ca: It’s less that and more of the feelings. I had been…lonely for a while before all of you came into my life, so going from that to suddenly having so many sisters-in-arms…well, it made for a nice change.

Op: I guess that makes sense. Hey, you think that’s why Incubators made a big deal about competition? To keep us separated so we’d fall into despair faster.

Ca: I would not rule it out. Actually, if we had never learned the truth about soul gems or witches, we probably would still be alive, since we’d have each other for support.

Ok: My bad.

Ca: It’s okay. As Ophelia has pointed out many times, it all worked out in the end.

Op: Aw, yeah! Look at me getting down! Hooray for snacks!

I don't remember what fic 16 is exactly, but I know the scene OP is talking about and have extended info! The reason Wwx was making a spell to summon swords was initially to retrieve Su She's sword from the waterborne abyss, and it was later used to retrieve some of the swords for everyone trapped in the xuanwu cave! Was this also the fic wwx created barriers for all of the sects as some kind of reparation?? It was definitely not a time travel fic, but inventor wwx fic

I don't recall if #16 sword summoning talisman is part of the turtle shield inventor WWX one, but as I also can't recall the title/author, here's more details on the turtle shield inventor one: I'm pretty sure it's madam yu/JC critical, WWX gets named Turtle Lord or something for his shields, LZ gave WWX the special jade he needed to make the shield and then Madam Yu ordered him to give it to JC. I think LZ gave his CR token to WWX so he could create another shield...

no that's definitely a different fic I remember turtle shield fic much more clearly and it didn't have that. I meant barriers to protect the Sect strongholds, using a series of nodes at points using the sects' insignia as a map/blueprint, not individual shields for a person

Golden cores were literal orb-like jewels that could be cut out of a cultivator’s chest, thus creating the opportunity for an illegal poaching trade. There was a scene where Wen Chao gleefully cut out Jiang Cheng’s, and I think he also took Wuxian’s. During the Sunshot Campaign when JC and LWJ get their swords back they also find the room of stolen cores, and are shocked to find WWX’s. Anyone know this one? Please!

The context is that wwx was trying to help wn regain his capacity for physical sensations, with lwj teaching him the guqin since it requires fine control. Then jc heard about their experiment and reacted as well as you can imagine:

"Do you want to get killed for his sake again?" Jiang Cheng raged. "Once wasn't enough? Who else needs to die before you stop this? Me? Jin Ling? All for a dead Wen? I should destroy him so there's nothing left of them at last, like we killed all the others, and then maybe you'll stop being so stupid!"

Wei Wuxian tensed, his face getting darker. Lan Wangji saw Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi each grab one of Lan Sizhui's hand in a gesture half comforting and half restraint, just as he grabbed Wen Ning's wrist.

"Don't make me regret what I've done for you," Wei Wuxian warned, almost a whisper.

"Then stop making everyone want to kill you!” Jiang Cheng exploded. “Just once, can't you bend your stupid ideals? They've gotten used to your unnatural marriage, they've accepted your methods, can't you be satisfied with that and not push for more? It's a Wen! You can't have forgotten how hated they are!"

"It's Wen Ning. Have you forgotten again what you owe him?"

"I'd rather see him dead than you."

Lan Wangji’s hand tightened on Wen Ning’s wrist, more an effort to control himself than anything.

Something shifted on Wei Wuxian’s face. Instead of angering him, the words made his eyes go softer.

“Out,” he ordered the rest of them, never looking away from Jiang Cheng. “All of you. Out. This instant.” When they didn’t move fast enough, he finally tore his eyes from the man who once was his brother and glared at them, his expression dark and rageful in a way Lan Wangji hadn’t seen since that cave, over a decade before. “Out! I will curse every single one of you if you’re not out of here by the time I count to ten!”

Before he made it to five, they had all left the room. Only Lan Wangji tried to linger at the door, but he was firmly pushed outside, the door locked and then… nothing. Not a sound. A silencing talisman, if Lan Wangji had to risk a guess.

“He’s not going to hurt him, right?” Jin Ling asked, with more uncertainty than he usually allowed himself.

“Which one are you worried about?” Lan Jingyi snapped.

Jin Ling glanced at the door, appearing unsure.

“Wen Qiongling!” Jin Ling then exclaimed, startling them as he planted himself right in front of Wen Ning. “Do not mind what my uncle said. You have already paid the price of your past misdeeds and surrendered yourself to justice and to your sentence. It would be unfair to punish you a second time. If anyone tries to demand further retribution against you, the Jin sect will stand to protect you.”

They all stared at him.

For a long while, Lan Wangji had held some resentment against his husband’s nephew. He knew it was perhaps irrational to be angry at a confused boy for stabbing the man who, ultimately, had been responsible for his parents’ deaths. Still Wei Wuxian had been hurt and Lan Wangji could not forgive that.

Not until Jin Ling said these words, looking and sounding so much the way Wei Wuxian had as a youth, that lan Wangji found his resentment melt away. He should have known Sizhui wouldn’t give his friendship to someone undeserving.

"You wouldn't understand," Wei Wuxian said with an annoyed click of his tongue. "But consider this: even if Lan Xichen turned on you and hurt you, you'd still love him, wouldn't you? Jiang Cheng is a gigantic asshole and I hate him for the things he's done after I died, but he's my brother and I love him anyway."

"Lan Xichen would never hurt me," Lan Wangji retorted. He knew of the things Jiang Cheng had done to men he just thought might be linked to Wei Wuxian. Forgiveness was beyond him.

"Then you're a lucky man with a perfect family in perfect Cloud Recesses," Wei Wuxian snapped. "All I have left is that asshole who stood by me for as long as he could, until I killed his sister. I'm not losing him."

He took a deep breath.

"I'm not letting him hurt Wen Ning either. And Sizhui isn't going anywhere near Lotus Piers until the situation calms down. He's not going near Koi Tower either, Jin Ling can't be trusted apparently and if he figures out..."

"Jin Ling knows."

It was unclear to Lan Wangji where the two boys stood with each other, but there was a trust between them that made him ache for what could have been between him and Wei Wuxian, if they'd understood each other better. Maybe they should have had a Lan Jingyi standing at their side too, someone to act as a bridge. Too bad they had met Wen Ning too late for that.

"He won't let anyone hurt A-Yuan. He's like you."

The spark of worry on Wei Wuxian's face died down, quickly replaced by a grimace.

"Lan Zhan, it's very unfair of you to be so observant," he complained.

No observation, just Lan Sizhui confessing he'd shared that secret with his two best friends because Jin Ling of all people had been observant enough to risk a guess, and immediately promised to protect Lan Sizhui if anyone else realised why Wen Ning often followed him on night hunts. Apparently, Lan Jingyi had quickly made the same promise. They were good children, and hopefully no war would fall upon their shoulders to stop them from growing into good men.

You know what would be cathartic?

JC getting the ass whooping he deserves.

I can't get over how he gets zero repercussions for the massacre of the Wen remnants as well as torturing and murdering who knows how many people for 13/16 years... Etc. Sure after Guanyin temple we get a spark of hope that he might at least mend his ways, but then in the extras he's back to his old ways so 🤷

The only post canon I accept for him is that he finally manages to cross one line too many and someone just beats the shit out of him and wipes the floor with his mug (preferably WN or LSZ because those two are such good boys and they deserve a little violence as a treat but LWJ and WWX could get to let out some steam as well) meanwhile the rest of the cultivation world watches on like "yup he had it coming"

(this is way, way post canon but I had a vision in my head. I hope it works)

Age has done nothing to temper Jiang Wanyin's personality. He's still entirely too quick to anger, always a hair's breadth away from violence. Lan Xichen finds it distasteful but he's a Sect Leader and must maintain proper relationship with his peers.

His amiable masks strains, just a little, when his youngest nephew is pushed back by the fury of Jiang Wanyin's blade.

It was supposed to be a lesson but Xichen knows Jiang Wanyin's true motives.

Lan Zhenxing is Wangji and Wuxian's youngest child, adopted when he was discarded at the gates of Cloud Recesses as a little baby. He may as well be Wei Wuxian's natural-born son, given how much he resembles him in personality.

His uncle is very displeased but Wangji is not-so-secretly enamored. Nothing pleases him more than finding traces of his husband in their son.

The quality that Wangji adores, Jiang Wanyin detests.

Xichen has always wondered why Jiang Wanyin is so determined to remain bitter. It hurts no one but himself. Wuxian has moved on, it isn't in his brother-in-law's nature to linger in the past. Xichen has witnessed his blissful happiness first hand and is forever grateful it turned out this way.

There's no reason why Jiang Wanyin couldn't follow the same path; build his family, nurture new ties, and take the path of peace.

Now, as he watches Jiang-zongzhu pressure his little nephew, his 14-year-old baby Lan, he can't help but feel angry.

It is supposed to be a lesson, a way to correct the child's sword grip, a way to help him become lighter on his feet.

Xichen had permitted it, nudging his intimidated nephew gently.

It was a mistake.

His little nephew's face is white and eyes are wide. He is visibly terrified and there's no parent in the crowd unbothered by it. He sees several cultivators step forward with disapproving frowns. There are a few who even dare to call Jiang Wanyin's name, asking him to slow down.

The Cultivation world is very familiar with the man's temper but this is the first time they see his capacity for ruthlessness so starkly.

"Jiang Cheng," Xichen turns around to see Wei Wuxian walk forward and breathes a sigh of relief. Wangji is nowhere to be found but he assumes he's still engaged in writing a report of their most recent Nighthunt.

The differences between Jiang Wanyin and Wei Wuxian couldn't be more stark.

Wuxian has a genial air and a youthful face. He barely looks like a father of three children, two of them already adults. Diligence and innate brilliance have allowed him to reach new heights of cultivation.

In terms of power, no one but Wangji is his match.

Jiang Wanyin, in contrast, has the look of a bitter, worn-down man. Xichen has always found it fascinating.

In Wei Wuxian, that Golden Core had thrived and shone with the brilliance of the Sun. In Jiang Wanyin, it has lost all of its lustre. It remains powerful, but nowhere near as potent as it should be.

Twenty three years ago, Wei Wuxian had gotten a weak body and a weak core. He build it up again and now he stands tall, strong, and practically glowing with the might of his spiritual prowess.

It is perhaps the person, not the core itself, that determines a cultivator's power.

Wei Wuxian steps between a furious Jiang Wanyin and his son, running a gentle hand over the boy's head to reassure him, "Go keep your A'die company, a-Xing. He's stuck with paperwork and would love a distraction."

All traces of fear have already left Zhenxing's face and he is back to his good-humored self. He bows to his father and Jiang-zongzhu cheerfully and walks away.

Wei Wuxian stares down at Jiang Wanyin with no trace of kindness on his face. The gentle father is gone, this is the Wei Wuxian his brother has carefully brought out with years of love and unceasing devotion.

Confident, self-assured, and absolutely unwilling to be anyone's victim.

"If you're angry, take it out on someone who can actually beat some sense into you, Jiang Cheng."

"Wei Wuxian!"

"Jiang Wanyin," His brother-in-law echoes mockingly, "Did you think you could harass my son and I would just let it go?"

"He's a weak if he needs your protection, even now." Jiang Wanyin says and Wuxian's expression turns frosty.

He unsheathes Suibian, "It seems like you need a sound thrashing."

Xichen coughs to conceal his laugh as Jiang Wanyin scowls furiously and rushes at Wuxian.

It is a short match. Sandu races forward and Wuxian spins out of its way, Suibian singing through the air as he cuts a shallow slash across Jiang Wanyin's chest.

The sight of blood silences everyone.

Wei Wuxian doesn't falter. It would seem everyone has forgotten just how ruthless the Yiling Laozu can really be when provoked. Wuxian presses Jiang Wanyin like the Sect Leader had pressed Lan Zhenxing. He becomes a swift, merciless, overwhelming force that has Jiang Wanyin scrambling backwards to avoid the more deadly strikes.

All the while, Wei Wuxian is calm, his lips quirked and clothes unruffled. He spins in a flurry of rich black silks and brings Suibian down with such force, Jiang Wanyin loses control of Sandu.

The sword clatters to the ground and Jiang Wanyin looks up at Wei Wuxian with fury and embarrassment.

"My son is weak, huh?"

One must wonder, Xichen thinks absently, how a man with every advantage in his corner manages to squander his potential so completely.

Jiang Wanyin is of noble birth, handsome in appearance, and posses a golden core that had immense potential.

And yet.

Xichen shakes his head as other cultivators nod in approval of Wei Wuxian, murmuring among themselves.

Apparently, no earthly advantages can overcome the faults of one's character.

"The good and righteous are always strong," His uncle says with grim satisfaction and Xichen looks at him in surprise, "Even if their bodies are weak." He thinks back on the young Wei-gongzi, back from the dead in a weak body. "The wicked and resentful are always weak." Lan Qiren starts walking away, following Wei Wuxian out of the training field, "Regardless of the power they hold."

Xichen looks back at Jiang Wanyin, who is stalking away with humiliation written on his face, ignoring the disapproving frowns aimed at his back.

What a pity.

I’m here for the ‘swords not as pets’ agenda. Swords as cars: solid, get you from place to place, potentially dangerous, customizable, something people name. Wwx losing his license taking the fall for a mistake jc made (idk, dui maybe?) and just choosing to mod the hell out of a self-balancing scooter or segway or something so it goes dangerously fast. Alternatively: spending 3 months inventing the first functional actual levitating hoverboard, with an insane top speed. 3 months in the (1/2)

sawdfert this is delightful!! i saw segway and i immediately started wheezing,, there was no time for laughing i went straight to the wheezing. i think it would make more sense if wwx lost his car and got a motorcycle? like hoverboards and segways are cool but motorcycles have that big reputation of being dangerous and there’s the whole ‘rebellious teen gets a motorcycle and becomes a delinquent’ thing? like motorcycles are fast and if you crash it’s so much worse than if you were in a car and there’s no airbags or anything. but also?? wwx rocking up to school on a segway while playing his flute like the shittiest entrance ever? iconic. but let’s stick with chenqing as a motorcycle/scooter (motorcycle-esque scooter not the ones that try and take out your ankles).

okay so all the major sects are super rich so in a modern au it would make sense for all the sect heirs to get cars. i’m not saying that jc and wwx complain about jzx being stuck-up bc he was given a porsche for his birthday even though they were also given cars for their birthdays,,, but i am. at first it would have been this major point of contention between yzy and jfm bc wwx isn’t even their son so why is he getting a car too but wwx is like ah it’s so i can drive jc and jyl to school! you wouldn’t want their cars being left outside the school all day would you? someone in my maths class had their car get keyed and it was super expensive to fix,, and yzy is like yes wwx may have a car only to protect my children from parking hassles,, also wwx must pay for his own parking. so wwx and jc both get given cars for their bdays.

now wwx gets bored easily,, so you could translate him being a cultivation genius to him being really good at driving. im talking that jc is still getting the hang of switching gears and wwx is out there casually drifting around corners. (this does mean he has to get new tyres really frequently but he’s friends with wen ning, whose family runs the mechanics that wwx likes to go to so he just helps around the shop for a bit and gets a discount (yes its the family discount)). anyway wwx really enjoys driving, also! he just rocks up to wen ning’s place one day and is like dude, i wanna pimp my ride, wanna help and wen ning is like heck yeah. so wwx pays for some upgrades with his own money and he spends hours doing some custom work to make it look cool,,

it’s all going well until wwx and jc go to wen chao’s party one night and jc gets absolutely sloshed,,, like completely hammered. wwx had walked in, grabbed a cup of lemonade or something and was gonna hang with his friends but lwj was there for some reason so he spent the entire night talking to him in the back garden. which means that when jc wanted to leave he saw wwx hanging out with lwj and went ew gross and just decided to drive home himself. he crashes and when wwx comes home the next day jc gets super pissed at him bc he was meant to be the designated driver and if he hadnt been screwing around with lwj jc wouldnt have tried to drive home and now his parents will be super pissed and wwx is like woah chill my grandmother is a mechanic and she can fix this up just give me a couple of days.

so wwx goes to baoshan sanren mechanics (which is just the back entrance to the wen sibling’s mechanics) and spends the next three days getting rid of all of his customisations and mods so his car looks exactly like jc’s. does he cry when he has to spend like five mins spraying the inside of the car with axe body spray to get the jc stench going on? maybe a little. but he does it and returns the car to jc! and jc is like oh wow my car is fixed, your grandma is a miracle worker and wwx is like haha yeah (:

anyway wwx mysteriously and suddenly discovers a passion for public transport,, it’s a good way to stay humble jiang cheng, he says, also i used all my petrol money buying porn from nhs or whatever. anyway wwx is doing the whole pt to school thing but then one afternoon wen chao and wzh find him and idk maybe the party got too rowdy so the cops came and wc got in trouble with his dad? he assumes wwx called the cops on him so he shoves wwx into his car and drives him out to the middle of no where and dumps him in the burial mounds scrap metal recycling place or whatever.

the train line isn’t running that day and there’s no phone service either so wwx is stuck there overnight. he gets super bored. so what does he do? he finds an abandoned scooter and starts scavenging for parts. he’s not expecting it to actually work but by the time the sun rises he’s found some actually decent parts and he thinks that he could get it working. tbh he kinda forgets to go back home and just walks into town to buy some food and then goes back and continues fiddling with the scooter. he doesnt live there for the three months but the people in yiling just accept that this random teenager has all but moved into their scrap heap and adopt him anyway. so he goes and visits the burial mounds every day after school so none of his friends or family really see him anymore.

until! one day he rocks up to school on his scooter. scooters,, are kinda like sad pathetic motorcycles,, but wwx mods his scooter with like a powerful engine and new steering and everything so people see it and go oh! a motorcycle! even though it’s not actually (can you do that with a scooter? idk but suspend your disbelief pls). so lwj is like hnnngg wwx in a leather jacket on a motorcycle but also wei ying, stop riding a motorcycle, *enter statistics about motorcycle crashes here* and wwx is like no! you cant take chenqing away from me. and jc is pissed bc they were meant to be brothers and have matching cars and be able to work on them and give them cool paint jobs together! but now wwx has this bike which has been modded to hell and back and refuses to drive his car bc it’s not as cool as his bike. so we get to have the whole ‘everyone thinks wwx is doing something dumb and dangerous’ bc he has a motorcycle and why isnt he just driving his car anymore? but we also get to keep some of the nuance of the demonic cultivation bc yeah it’s more dangerous than driving in a car but wwx doesnt have a car anymore and scooters are a loottt safer than motorcycles (if my two seconds of research is correct).

so! wwx won’t abandon chenqing and he did most of his work using scrap parts so he goes back to the wens and is like wen ning my best bro check her out and he’s like oooooooh and they start modding chenqing together. wen qing doesnt know why wwx is constantly over at their shop all the time but jc keeps arguing with wwx and wwx grows more distant with his family and friends bc he’s making ~bad decisions~ and a motorcycle is a gateway to idk teen delinquent shenanigans like smoking and doing graffiti so he’s kinda ousted from respectable rich people society and wen qing is like i have two (2) brothers now and they’re adorable not that i’ll ever tell them that. and wwx modding chenqing got him a reputation in yiling like everyone saw him walk in one day and then drive out with this sexy sexy bike so people start coming to him for mods and stuff and wwx earns the title yiling patriarch and wen ning, his trusted best friend and helper, gets called the ghost general bc idk he helps a lot but the customers never meet him. so they become some dynamic duo for car and bike mods!

anyway,, yzy delivers him an ultimatum one day: the car or the bike (or more accurately: the family or the bike) but wwx can’t drive the car anymore so he just gets quietly disowned and drops out of school. (we’ll save jzxuan the suffering in this au he can keep his car). he goes to the wens and theyre like hey whats up? wait no you cant live in a scrap heap,, not even if you buy a tent,,, just live with us please. and then wwx gets adopted by the wens and idk i want them to have a happy ending so wwx and wn go off and do some actual mechanic and modding training with some expert (sqdcfgt imagine if it was the real baoshan sanren who just happened to be in the market for some apprentices and saw wwx and wn’s work and was like them and then later realised it was her grandson). so they get their apprenticeship and they disappear off somewhere for a year or two - when wwx had been disowned he’d deleted everyone’s contacts and was like if they text me i’ll add them back but im not gonna have a contact list cemetery. (no one contacts him).

eventually the 13 years pass and wwx has been helping the wens raise their little nephew a-yuan who is showing a real aptitude for being a mechanic even though he’s just a kid and just generally enjoying the quiet life of being a mechanic while doing fun mods and lil baby projects. then one day lwj’s car breaks down while he’s driving through the area and he calls up the local mechanic and guess who rocks up? it’s wwx. and then we get to have them dance around each other and wwx being like lwj doesnt trust me, he’s just sitting here and watching me work all day ): and lwj is like dont let him go dont let him go dont let him go,, and eventually they get their romance but this is way too long already so im im gonna end this here

agents of shield x mdzs au

This is the qUaLitY content y’all get from this blog. Also see me spamming friend about this AU. It’s junior-centered, with a dash of wangxian. This is basically a more in-depth version of what I gave my friend lol

After getting kicked out of SHIELD for questionable experiments involving Kree blood, Wei Wuxian was spying on Hydra (lead by Wen Ruohan) by infiltrating them as a scientist. However, being Wei Wuxian, he neglected to tell anyone since he got kicked out, so everyone thought he betrayed them.

So he’s at Hydra, befriending Wen Qing & Ning, and realizes that they’re good people.

But he got caught giving info to Director LXC, so Wei Wuxian makes his grand escape. He may have accidentally knocked over a terrigenesis crystal while trying to escape the Nightless City.

The terrigenesis crystal may have turned a little boy into an Inhuman (the first time anyone went through terrigenesis) and that little boy (Wen Yuan) may have accidentally burnt down the entire Nightless City.

At least, that’s how WWX explains it to Lan Wangji when he gives LWJ a child to take care of.

So, with Wen Yuan in SHIELD custody, Lan Wangji adopts him & renames him Lan Sizhui. He’s still a child (I don’t know why I keep referring to him as a little boy?? He’s like 12-ish??).

So Wei Wuxian goes off to re-join the remnants of HYDRA because they let him experiment in peace & he gets to keep an eye on them for SHIELD (even though he’s an ex-agent).

But before that, he vouches for WQ & WN to join SHIELD. And though many people there are suspicious, they do have a vacant spot for a doctor now that Dr. Wei is gone & WQ is quite good. They bring WN along too.

Meanwhile: Lan Jingyi is getting abused my his mother & his dad is working across the country so life is quite sucky for him.

Thankfully, his family has connections to one Lan Xichen (who learns about the abuse eventually) and Jingyi gets into SHIELD Academy. What he doesn’t know is that he comes from a line of people with Inhumans genes.

Which may or may not how been why Xichen was visiting.

Anyways, Sizhui & Jingyi meet at SHIELD Academy (both around 13-14?) and Lan Qiren is about to get more headaches.

Eventually, he (now 16) gets told why he was accepted on the first place & asked if he’d like to go through terrigenesis. He’s like “ok” and boom vocal mind control.

That’s actually inaccurate; he has the power to manipulate people with his voice. He has to learn how to control it though.

Wei Wuxian rejoins SHIELD! Lan Sizhui meets the person who saved him all those years ago. yay.

Little did they know, Wei Wuxian was expieriemnting with terrigenesis while he was gone but shhhhhhh-

Now onto Jin Ling’s backstory, cause his is a doozy.

Jiang Yanli got Inhuman genes from her mother. So did jc, but his powers & stuff come into play later. Wwx is their adopted bro, but due to circumstances that will be explained later, Wwx & jc are estranged.

Jyl and jzx raise jl for most of his younger childhood (until he’s about 7-8) when evil HYDRA people come in & kill jzx and kidnap jyl for Inhuman experimentation. Note, she has the genes but isn’t an Inhuman (yet).

Ling is very sad and Jiang Cheng swoops in to take him in. Jc actually worked at as a SHEILD agent back from before lxc was Director (coughxichengcough) but left when his sister was kidnapped so he could try to track her down & save her. Instead he gets his nephew.

Jc also takes over his parents’ buisness to get a source of income.

And jc goes through the woes of being a parent up until he also gets kidnapped by HYDRA. Jl also gets nabbed, but HYDRA separates them

Wwx may have been expierimenting but he tries to do it without hurting any of them, and he validates it because he prevented many people from getting cut open by explaining to the HYDRA heads that they’re most useful alive. It somehow works.

In fact, wwx is assigned to jl. The HYDRA people know wwx’s relation to jc & jyl, so they don’t tell wwx that they kidnapped jc & jyl or that they’re literally in the same facility.

Since wwx was assigned to jl, he basically helps him undergo terrigenesis and tries to determine his power.

Wwx also doesn’t know that jl is kinda his nephew. But he pities him, so he maybe helps jl escape, but in a way so that no one realizes it because he still has his cover to maintain.

(also, I forgot to mention: jyl’s kidnapping caused jc & wwx to become estranged).

So wwx may have had a very loud conversation near jl’s cell about some of the exits and also teaches jl the basics on his Inhuman ability. maybe the device he uses to control jl’s powers happened to malfunction in the middle of the night.

Ling, not knowing that wwx is helping him, uses his power (energy manipulation) to break out and makes a run for it.

He manages to escape (wwx had a very detailed convo about the building’s layout) and gets the hell out of there.

Jl’s smart enough to realize that since HYDRA knows where he lives, that he probably shouldn’t go back home.

He really wants to get his uncle back (and maybe his mom, but he’s not sure she’s still alive) but has like no idea how to use his power to do anything except bomb stuff. & that only works like half the time.

Jin Ling is about to kill a bitch but then he remembers that his uncle gave him an address to go to if anything ever happened (remember, jc is an ex-SHIELD agent so bad things happen quite a lot).

Meanwhile, despite his carefulness, wwx got caught and HYDRA is deciding whether or not he will die. Wwx, being the genius he is, takes all his stuff and gets the fuck outta there.

He decides to go visit his kinda-boyfriend (that he may or may not have been ignoring for like 13 years), lwj back at SHIELD. He also wants to see how the Wen siblings are doing.

So WWX goes back to SHIELD, only about an hour before Ling arrives. In jl’s defense, he had no idea that the entrance to a secret government organization was a quaint little music shop.

He just kinda... walks in, and everyone is freaking bc they have been breached but sees him and thinks “huh he kinda looks like jc” and then lxc thinks “oh no what happened this time”

Lxc introduces himself and jl (being the second best matchmaker here, second to only lxc) accidentally reveals that jc talked about him before.

Lxc is pleasantly surprised (gay) and asks jl to come with him into his office so that they can... chat.

On their way, they pass by the science lab. Wei Wuxian, who just came back to base, is happily walking along with Lan Sizhui, when all hell breaks loose.

Remember when I said that wwx was quite secretive about helping? And that jl is still upset bc he never got his uncle back and he can’t lose another family member, not to them?

So obviously jl does what anyone would if you saw the guy who forced you to undergo a life-changing event and was involved in the organization that kidnapped two of his family members and killed his dad: he attaccs.

If you also remember, I mentioned that jl has no fucking clue what he’s doing. All he knows is energy and boom boom.

And the mini-explosions only work in close range, from what he’s seen. So in his anger, he unlocks a new skill: energy shots.

Wei Wuxian took cover like the second he realized who was attempting to kill him and screaming at the others not to kill his assailant no matter how annoying he was.

Lan Wangji sadly wasn’t at base, but Sizhui was, and he can certainly hold his own against Ling, especially since Sizhui has had more time to train with his power.

Luckily, Jingyi swoops in & uses his voice to force jl to stop. They handcuff him and lxc drags him away into his office.

It’s safe to say that the science lab corridor is fried.

That’s basically how jl got introduced to SHIELD (he eventually joins and learns the truth about wwx, which makes all their past interactions quite awkward).

Now we have Zizhen, who comes into the story after the two Lans have become agents but before the whole Jin Ling fiasco occurs.

Sizhui & Jingyi were sent to see if Agent Ouyang Xingyun (@yoitsamy’s oc older sis of oyzz)‘a family knew where she was because she was on a undercover mission & didn’t check in with her contact last week. + she didn’t contact SHIELD so Director LXC was worried.

They look through the window and everything is a mess, so they kick down the door and try to find anyone. The whole place is torn apart, like people were fighting there.

In the upstairs bedroom, they find Ouyang Zizhen & four of his younger siblings huddled together in a corner, protected by a forcefield-like shield. Once they realize the Lans aren’t a threat, the go back to SHIELD HQ and put in a room there until they can figure out wtf was going on.

Apparently, Zizhen unlocked his powers w/o terrigenesis when they got attacked by someone who was looking for his sister and used it to protect his siblings. They hadn’t seen their big sister in weeks.

So the Lans have a new case to solve, SHIELD has two new Inhumans with off circumstances, and Lan Wangji is one Xichen away from killing Jin Ling.

Episode 45: The One where the Juniors Stick It to the Old People

Still in the demon subdue palace aka wwx's classy cave and wwx is putting ss on the spot and it's great

he's implying that su she is just the distraction or whatever so jgy can enact the Ultimate Evil Master Plan

HE'S SO ATTRACTIVE DOING HIS DETECTIVE WORK

HE JUST BLUFFED HIS WAY INTO MAKING SU SHE REVEAL HIS HAND AND IT WAS AWESOME

he was all, why don't you prove me wrong and play the Totally Not Evil Magic Music you played before?? hm?

su she ofc didn't play it so wwx pulls out some papers from his robe and is like, that's alright i'll just have lqr read this sheet music i stole from your boss's secret chamber...

and then su she panics and tries to stop him but lwj launches bichen at su she like a boss

The only unbelievable thing here is that su she somehow managed to block bichen and send it right back to lwj tbh

(thus revealing he still had access to his own spiritual energy lol what a loser)

Lwj catches it gracefully and does a serious pose and side-eyes su she with all the venom he can muster lol

Ewww, su she just spat blood and disrupted the magic circle (bc he knows he’s been caught out)

lwj ofc tries to attack him again but su she is COWARD and teleports himself away

The puppets try to storm the place but wn is on them in an instant

Oh, lwj gets bichen ready to help but wwx grabs him by the arm to stop him

Wwx: it won’t work, don’t bother

Lwj doesn’t look happy about this but he lowers his sword anyway

sect leader yao starts talking but idc what he has to say

Wwx takes the time to spell out that ss is working for jgy and they’re both up to no good

Bc apparently all his detective-y exposition didn’t make it obvious enough

God, it must hurt wwx to be surrounded by idiots all the time...

wn is still fighting off puppets but he lets wwx know that he’s not gonna be able to hold them back for very much longer

The fact that he can hold them back by himself like this at all is amazing tbh

So lsz, being the protective badass sweetie pie that he is, immediately dives in after wn, offering to help!

Jin ling sees him do this and draws his sword to follow behind but jc stops him…

JC IS GIVING JL THE ZIDIAN

Lol Jc’s all like don't lose it! But jin ling doesn’t take it!!

He actually shoves his way passed jc and throws himself into the throng of puppets with just his father’s sword

Jc is FURIOUS, he’s all, get back here you idiot!!

Jin ling ofc doesn’t listen

Lsz: you should go back

JL: I won’t!

LSZ AND JL, I LOVE THEM SO. LOOK AT THOSE PRECIOUS BABIES BE BETTER PEOPLE THAN THE OLD FARTS IN THE CAVE

So now we have wn, lsz, and jl fighting off the puppets and protecting everyone

WWX TOOK OFF HIS OUTER ROBE AND REVEALED LWJ'S UNDERTHINGS

wwx slices his fingers on bichen to start writing on lwj's white inner robes that he’s shamelessly wearing and displaying to the world

lwj watches him VERY INTENTLY, LOL

WWX IS USING HIMSELF AS BAIT!! THE MARKINGS ARE GONNA LURE THE PUPPETS TO HIM!!!

AND HANGUANG JUN IS GOING TO BE FIGHTING OFF THE PUPPETS THAT GET NEAR HIM

BC THEY'RE SOULMATES AND THEY LOVE EACH OTHER

AND THEY’RE A FANTASTIC TEAM OVERALL

Ljy tries to offer himself up as bait too but wwx is like nope! You all just stay out of our way

Ljy tries to protest but lwj cuts him off with a “listen to him.”

Then our boys share a brief look before throwing themselves into the fray

They look so cool here! Wwx lands steady on his feet with a solid thunk and brings his flute up to his (beautiful) lips

In contrast lwj slides in with sharp glide right next to wwx and gets battle-ready

LOOK AT MY SUNSHINE BOY PLAY HIS FLUTE LIKE A BOSS

God he looks so good when he’s focused like this

LOOK AT LWJ FIGHT OFF HUNDREDS OF PUPPETS LIKE A BADASS

Lwj is twirling around wwx so fast, fighting back every puppet that comes his way

Wwx is dodging any that get too close but he’s also smoothly bobbing and weaving around lwj’s attacks

THEY WORK SO SEAMLESSLY TOGETHER I LOVE THEM SO MUCH

meanwhile wn helps clear the way for the rest of the cultivators to escape

cut to the cultivators swarmed around the exit of the burial mounds, yao is talking, yuck

sect leaders yao and ouyang are the worst.

they're all, let's just leave and go to lotus pier to recover!!

jc is like, you want us to leave just like that?? (YOU COWARDLY BASTARDS, he doesn’t say but i know in my heart that he’s screaming that in his head)

and the other guys are like, yeah, it's not like lwj and wwx are gonna survive that

jl is like BULLSHIT OFC THEY'LL COME BACK (i love my bratty son)

And Jin Ling is Right BC LWJ IS COMING OUT OF THE WOODS WITH WWX LEANING AGAINST HIM

Wwx looks all weak and worn out. Like, he’s leaning against lwj heavily and lwj is watching him all worriedly

Wwx knees buckle and he goes down, but thankfully since lwj still has his hands on him, he doesn’t fall hard

LSZ RUNS TO THEM AND IS LIKE R U OK???

POOR BABY IS SO WORRIED AND UPSET!!

Lwj still has his eyes glued on wwx but you can tell that he’s starting to feel weary from the battle too

wwx is like we're okay, don’t worry, AND THEN PASSES OUT

which is the EXACT OPPOSITE of okay, omg

Lwj does this little gasp and twitches towards wwx but thankfully lsz is able to catch wwx before he hit the ground

Lsz is frantically calling his name but wwx is completely out of it and all we hear him say in response is a very weak “a-yuan”

At that, lwj’s eyes shift from wwx to lsz and he just stares at him bc here is his son, frantic over wwx, his soulmate, and his son's other father.

And there is his soulmate, murmuring their son’s name

AND NEITHER OF THEM KNOW WHO THEY ARE TO ONE ANOTHER

BC LWJ KEEPS NOT TELLING THEM FOR SOME REASON??:?

cut to some docks on the river

fucking yao and ouyang are running their mouths again

i hate those losers, i'm ignoring what they're saying

oooh, wn is approaching the juniors. lsz specifically. jl gets all on guard.

lol all the other juniors cower away but lsz stands his ground.

aw ☹️ wn steps back when he sees the kids get all scared

now we're getting some info from lsz that's heavily implying that lsz is actually a-yuan.

wn is so excited here bc he might have a surviving family member! he's so happy!! It’s adorable!!!

wn: can i call you a-yuan?

lsz: ofc! (WITH THE SWEETEST SMILE!)

wn: a-yuan, how have you all these years?

Lsz: i’ve been living well!

here we learn that lwj started taking care of lsz since he was about 5yo, and he taught him to play the guqin

WN GIVES HIM A LITTLE PAPER BUTTERFLY

AND HE FLASHES BACK TO A HAND GIVING HIM A PAPER BUTTERFLY AND IT'S SO OBVIOUSLY LWJ'S HAND

wn is all teary-eyed and tries to reach out to touch lsz's face

but jl draws his sword and startles them

lsz gets between them but jl is all like step aside, this is none of your bsns

lsz: jin ling, put your sword away first

jl: get away! *shoves lsz*

He regrets it IMMEDIATELY if the way his jerked forwards to, idk, grab him is anything to go by.

He holds himself back tho bc he’s cursed with pride and general awkwardness towards his crush like his father before him

lol everyone rushes to catch lsz bc lsz is a sweetie-pie and everyone loves him

wn is all it's okay if you're mad at me, i won't fight you but don't hurt lsz!

oyzz: he was caring for you! how could you push him and ignore his kindness?

omg oyzz really does have a sensitive soul. what a sweet boy.

then someone mutters smth like oh, he's so ill-bred and ofc jl hears it

jl: right! i'm just that awful, so what?

now we cut to lwj and wwx who are on one of the boats!

lwj has his guqin out and is playing magic music for wwx who's got his eyes closed and eyebrows are all pinched together

WWX IS SO BEAUTIFUL, EVEN WHEN HE'S OBVIOUSLY EXHAUSTED AND IN PAIN

lwj can hear the juniors bickering and wwx starts fussing in his sleep muttering jin ling jin ling

lwj: wei ying

and wwx startles awake

wwx: lan zhan, what happened?

lwj: you passed out

wwx: not me. i mean, jin ling?

ofc wwx doesn't care what happened to him, ofc he only cares about what happened to his nephew

lwj doesn't answer but they both hear the bickering on the docks

we cut back to the juniors

jl is like, yeah i'm awful but you can't discipline me!!

wwx: what is going on?

and we watch wwx exit the boat and make his way down the dock to where the juniors are

and i was thoroughly distracted by his slim waist in those swirling black robes and had to rewind to watch it again

jin ling looks like he's about to cry and he has wn at sword point and wwx is all gently telling jin ling to put his sword down

jl: i won't!

wwx: jin ling!

jl: no!

and then he has a meltdown. he's all like, so i'm acting childish, satisfied? AND MY POOR BRATTY SON STARTS SOBBING HIS LITTLE HEART OUT CLUTCHING HIS SWORD

jl: this is my father's sword, i won't put it down!

AND NOBODY IS GOING TO HIM. NOBODY GETS NEAR HIM OR TRIES TO HUG HIM AS HE CRIES WITH HIS WHOLE BODY, MY POOR LITTLE BOY

SOMEBODY GIVE THIS KID SOME GODDAMN AFFECTION ALREADY

LIKE, EVEN A PAT ON THE SHOULDER OR SOMETHING. ANYTHING!!

all the juniors look down awkwardly but wwx swallows back tears bc he knows that he's partially responsible for the way jin ling hurts rn. even lwj looks sympathetic

(oh, finally remembered that this is a kid in pain, huh, lwj?)

jc hears his nephew crying and comes out of his own boat

jc: a-ling! why are you crying? come here.

and jl goes running to him

and it's kind of sweet how he does it?? idk.

the lack of hesitation indicates that he sees jc as a safe person to run to and it's sweet, i guess.

jl starts scrubbing his face in his sleeve to get rid of the tears

jc: what's wrong? who made you cry?

i wouldn't say he asks this tenderly but his voice is softer and not nearly as sharp as it usually is when he talks to people

and you KNOW he’s ready and willing to rain hellfire on whoever made his nephew cry

jl doesn't answer but jc glares down the dock where everyone is standing

LOL EVERYONE LOOKS DOWN

THE JUNIORS, WWX, WN

THEY ALL AVOID JC'S GAZE AND HAVE THE GUILTIEST LOOKS ON THEIR FACES

lwj doesn't look away tho and his face is in its usual neutral state

but we all know how lwj and jc's relationship is so this is not surprising

then yao has to open his mouth again but what he says doesn't matter, it's how the juniors react that matters

oyzz is all like why are you using that tone? if wwx wanted to hurt us, we wouldn't have made it this far, right?

lsz: oyzz is right!

lol oyzz does this little chin thrust like heck yeah i'm right

LOL jc is like, sect leader ouyang, the mouthy kid is yours, isn't he? he's so good at talking

some jiang disciple goes up to jc to let him know they're ready to set off to lotus pier

Jc to wwx: you're barefaced enough to go back there?

wwx looks stricken

lwj is watching his face closely, concerned bc his soulmate is hurting (again) bc of jc (again).

we make it to lotus pier by nightfall

Side note to mention that the scenery and music as they travel down the river to lotus pier is really beautiful

Everybody files in but jc stops in front of our boys and wn and doesn't budge until wn says he'll stay behind.

and even then he doesn't say our boys can come in, he just turns around and walks off

LSZ TELLS WN HE'S GOING TO STAY WITH HIM AND KEEP HIM COMPANY

WN IS SO SURPRISED AND HAPPY

AND OUR BOYS ARE WATCHING THIS HAPPEN

He makes a move like he's going to join them and lwj stops him

lwj: let them be.

you know lwj, this would be a perfect time TO TELL WWX THAT LSZ IS HIS KID, HIS LITTLE A-YUAN.

but no, instead he just gazes at him soulfully

which, okay, i'm never gonna say no to soulful gazes BUT YOU CAN MULTITASK, CAN'T YOU??

LWJ, YOU CAN LOOK AT HIM WITH YOUR WHOLE HEART IN YOUR EYES AND TALK AT THE SAME TIME.

Oh, lwj and wwx are at the gates of lotus pier and wwx looks at the sign above the gates

his eyes get all red-rimmed and you can see his throat bob

BC HE'S HURTING.

BC THIS WAS HIS HOME WHERE HIS SISTER AND BROTHER LIVED AND LOVED HIM AND NOW HE DOESN'T HAVE ANY OF THAT

god the way lwj looks at him whenever these moments pop up...he knows exactly when wwx starts hurting inside and he keeps his eyes trained on him the entire time until wwx indicates he's ready to keep moving

we cut to a little moment between lsz and wn where lsz tells us how lwj raised him with a bunch of bunnies and it's adorable

We cut to sword hall where all the cultivators are gathered

jc gets called away and as he's going to tend to whatever it is he sees wwx try to go towards swords hall and glares at him

wwx literally had one foot over the threshold and he awkwardly drags it back out at jc's glare

poor wwx. he just looks awkward all over.

like, he looks down and away and gets kinda fidgety. can't meet jc's eyes. BUT HE STILL MAKES IT LOOK SO PRETTY

lwj on the other hand stares right back at jc, lol, to emphasize I'M NOT INTIMIDATED BY YOU EVEN IF THIS IS YOUR HOME I'M IN RN.

and only after that's, like, telepathically communicated or smth do his eyes flicker over to wwx to see how he's doing.

after jc stalks off, wwx does that cute little nose tap thing he does

wwx: lan zhan, sit down~

and he indicates the stoop with a playful smile

lwj looks at the stoop for like half a second before walking around wwx like NOPE, sitting on stoops is not a thing that hanguang jun does

wwx's mouth curls into a little scowl like fine, be that way.

he sits down on the stoop himself while lwj leans on the pillar next to it, eyes closed and arms crossed and basically looking like a very beautiful and elegant statute

LOLOLOLOL

WWX GOES TO SPRAWL BACK ONTO THE STOOP, RESTING ON ELBOWS

AND LWJ, WITH HIS EYES STILL CLOSED SAYS: No misbehavior.

HE KNOWS WEI YING SO WELL

wwx looks up at him and pouts but still straightens up so he's sitting properly

wwx starts to sulk and complain about how jc's been gone for so long when jc shows up with a couple of ladies following him

jc pauses to look at our boys and says "come on in" shortly and turns on his heel to enter swords hall

Lol wwx turns to look at lwj with a big smile on his face bc hey, look at that! jc invited them in!!

wwx and lwj just loiter awkwardly near the entrance of sword hall

now we're gonna get a whole bunch of exposition that we don't care much about

blah blah jgy arranged for jgs to die surrounded by prostitutes blah blah

blah blah jgy knowingly married his half-sister blah blah

and throughout all this exposition, wwx is the only one who asks questions and looks for more details.

the rest of them are all willing to take everything at face value which really just explains everything about how they all ended up in this mess, tbh

we also keep getting reaction shots from jin ling and it makes me sad.

he does the death grip on his sword, and looks shocked and confused at every revelation, poor boy.

and the episode ends as the crowd starts to get riled up over all this brand new information

Which honestly is a relief bc things were getting WAY TOO PLOTTY for my tastes

Oh god, I read a fic and now I really need to vent about it. I came across this fic that sounded like it was JC realising that he needed to just let WWX live his life because they had come to a stage where the two of them needed to go their seperate ways. And boy was I wrong haha. The fic was basically just a way for JC to complain and blame WWX for literally everything. And they make it seem like he is in the right to do so. He blames WWX for the core transfer, saying that 1/7

WWX had forced him to take his core, that WWX had lied to him and told him he would be getting HIS core back, and then called WWX egocentric. And you know what? I'm used to these arguments from JC stans. But wow, then it just got worse. JC then goes on to blame WWX for protecting the people who had destroyed their lives. He calls WWX selfish and self-centred. Like...pot calling the kettle black, holy crap. JC is THE most selfish character in the novel. He is willing to stand by and let 2/7

Innocent civilians die, just so he can have an easy life with his subordinate at his side. And then when WWX tries to point out that they were a bunch of elderly people and a child, JC talks about all the innocent people WWX supposedly killed during the war. Which I think the author blatantly made up, because I don’t think there is any mention of WWX razing camps of civilians in the novel or the show. That's something that JC would do. And of course, JC is in the right here. I can't 3/7

even express how angry this makes me. JC is acting like the victim here, when this is literally him complaining that WWX was helping innocent people - some of which are the reason WHY he is still ALIVE - because WWX didn't just stick around and help him rebuild lotus pier. Boo-hoo, the poor Sect Leader had one less subordinate to help him do his job; I'm sure the Wen remnants would be fine giving up their only protector and dying to make JC's life easier. God, some people make me so mad haha 4/7

Omg - and then the cherry on top - JC blames WWX for running off to LWJ when he comes back from the dead, and 'disrespecting' JC. Like...holy shit. As if JC didn't torture WWX with his worst fear when he came back, as if he didn't threaten to KILL him literally the second he saw WWX - hell, before he even KNEW it was WWX - as if JC didn't lead the siege to SLAUGHTER a bunch of people WWX saw as family. What the hell makes ANYONE think WWX would want to be near JC after all of that. 5/7

And then, after all of that, JC is portrayed as the victim. The one who says he can't forgive WWX, the one who storms off while WWX desperately calls after him - like, holy shit, WHAT. The fact that JC is made to seem like this victim who has done no wrong is what really made me angry. Yes, WWX has made mistakes, but JC sure as hell has too and it makes me so mad when people act like JC is some innocent baby who has done no wrong. And also, with that whole golden core 6/7

debate - you don't want his core? Then STOP USING IT. Stop complaining constantly, and give up your cultivator lifestyle, and stop using WWX's core, because that's the life you would have had if he hadn't given it to you. It makes me want to write a fic where WWX snaps and says he's had enough of JC and gets the chance to end the relationship on his terms, because if there's anyone who needs to walk away from this, it's WWX lol. Sorry for that rant, but this made me so angry haha 7/7

To start on a somewhat amusing note, hearing JC blaming WWX for “disrespecting” him by running off with LWJ makes it sound almost like JC’s spouse left him for another man? It’s kind of funny. Made me laugh a bit. Moving on... I think WWX killed a few allied cultivators during the war? But that was as a side effect of using the Yin Tiger Seal and subsequently losing control of it, which iirc JC was pushing him to use, so...

With the golden core thing, I’d love even one fic where JC starts bitching and someone is like “stop using it then”. Or better, WN is like “You know, I have my sister’s notes, if you hate it so much I’ll put it back and you can take MXY’s shitty core”. JC would backpedal so hard on that it would probably be kind of hilarious to see. And WWX didn’t force JC to do anything, he just said “Hey there might be a way for you to have a golden core again” and JC jumped on it, didn’t ask for any details beyond what he had to do. He would’ve done anything. I bet he would have ripped WWX’s chest open with his bare hands if it meant having a golden core again.

And yeah, JC calling WWX selfish is so incredibly hypocritical? Yeah, JC was prepared to let 50 innocent civilians who he knew were innocent civilians, knew he owed his life to and that there were children among them, die horribly so that he wouldn’t have to raise a finger for them and instead could enact a horrible genocide-for-genocide revenge, not to mention him using his brother as a weapon and then blaming him when his mental state started to fracture, but WWX is the selfish one. Sure. I just... where do the stans get this image of Poor Innocent Victim JC Cruelly Tormented By Evil WWX? It must come from somewhere, but it has zero basis in canon!
