31 - Simurgh

The Simurgh is depicted in Iranian art as a gigantic bird, big enough to carry off an elephant or a whale. She appears as a peacock with the head of a dog and the claws of a lion – sometimes, however, also with a human face. The Simurgh is inherently benevolent and unambiguously female. Being part mammal, she suckles her young. Iranian legends consider the bird so old that she has seen the destruction of the world three times over. She learned so much by living so long, that she is thought to possess the knowledge of all the ages. In one legend, the simurgh was said to live 1,700 years before plunging herself into flames (much like the phoenix).

The simurgh made her most famous appearance in Ferdowsi's epic Shahnameh (The Book of Kings), where Zal, the son of Saam, was born albino. When Saam saw his albino son, he assumed that the child was the spawn of devils, and abandoned the infant on the mountain Alborz. The child's cries were heard by the tender-hearted simurgh, who lived atop this peak, and she retrieved the child and raised him as her own. Zal was taught much wisdom from the loving simurgh, who has all knowledge, but the time came when he grew into a man and yearned to rejoin the world of men. Though the simurgh was terribly saddened, she gave him three golden feathers which he was to burn if he ever needed her assistance. Upon returning to his kingdom, Zal fell in love and married the beautiful Rudaba. When it came time for their son to be born, the labor was prolonged and terrible; Zal was certain that his wife would die in labour. Rudaba was near death when Zal decided to summon the simurgh. The simurgh appeared and instructed him on how to perform a cesarean section, thus saving Rudaba and the child, who became one of the greatest Persian heroes, Rostam.

If you draw your favourite things out you will know them better! So, this is Edward Elric from #FullmetalAlchemist.

Even if you have decided on the pose you want to draw, it is better to sketch out these three first:

the moment before the pose is struck

the pose itself

the moment after the pose is struck

then decide which image works better for your art. I learned this from a really great senior of mine, and it is very solid advice.

I redesigned him again despite saying I would stop doing that... Prev design and old bio here.

He still has a lot of the same features as my previous design, i mostly just changed his pattern and coloring! I wanted him to be a rustier color!

I also changed his cheek fluff to be round, mostly just for an interesting face shape! his cheek fluff hangs a little more flat when he's older just to give him a more matured look (hes been thru some shit, his cheeks hath deflated)

Firesight has chronic pain (and mobility issues later in life):

Fire has the Scottish Fold breed's mutation which effects cartilage in the body, this causes his ears to fold, but it also causes chronic joint pain and can progress into swollen and inflexible joints.

For Fire, he is has the heterozygous version of this mutation, which means that his disability progresses more slowly, as a young cat he does experience some joint pain, with some days being worse than others. He is able to medicate with his own chronic pain herbal mix he created as a Healer. However as Fire grows older his joints will worsen, and by the time of his old age he will be unable to jump and some days is unable to walk.

He is able to still use his medication to aid him and is able to lead a happy life, but he is disabled and I didnt want to leave that out of his character! It's important to have disability rep (and spread awareness of the issues with the Scottish Fold breed) and I hope I serve him justice!

CHAN buys you anything he sees piques your interest. you never have to verbally tell him you want something. whenever he takes notice to when your eyes linger just a second longer on a shirt on the hangers, or you constantly talk about a decoration you’ve been wanting to get, he’ll go out and buy it as soon as possible. he doesn’t just give you gift after gift either, he’ll shower you in so much subtle affection. the way he’d cling onto you and place gentle kisses on your forehead, eyelids, cheeks, nose, everywhere when the two of you are sitting watching tv; he absolutely spoils you. he’s an observant guy, and this really comes to play, especially when he starts buying you things that you don’t even look at, but rather what reminds him of you.

MINHO, though unwilling to admit it, has a 42 hour long soundtrack of songs that remind him of you. he’d been subconsciously compiling a playlist of songs that rubbed him in a way that others didn’t: a slight buzzing feeling in his head, it might even stop him in his tracks, contort his mood to where he was unexplainably snappy (he was just suddenly emotional), and he couldn’t pinpoint the reason for so long. it was when a mental image began to pop up during a certain chord of a song that he realized he was connecting the songs to you, and it wasn’t until it was at 30 hours that you found out about its existence. and the funny thing was, was that the songs were always slow and sleepy-like, almost like he was floating in the dream that was you.

CHANGBIN is always looking out for you. at every time of the day where a meal should be, expect a text from him asking if you’ve eaten. in the mornings, he’ll write a quick good morning message and a “make sure you grab something to eat.” it’s to the point where he’s memorized when you typically have dinner. it progressively grows to him making sure you eat a proper meal three times a day. he’s your top motivator if you’re on a diet, though he also soothes your worries on your body image. his goal is to keep you healthy and satisfied, is all. if he knows you’re too busy to feed yourself properly, expect to find food delivered with a lovely note, never cold and always something he knew you enjoyed. and if he’s home too, you already know he’ll be the one to prepare you something from his own hands.

HYUNJIN texts you good morning and good night every single day, without fail. a lot of the time, it’s really energetic with lots of emojis and exclamation marks. if he’s up late at night, sometimes, it’ll be a lengthy, childish love letter. he’s particularly good with his words at these times, and it’s common to find yourself crying at his constructed paragraph, stacked with innocence and pure love. sometimes, if he’s too exhausted to let his fingers do the work, he’ll lay in bed with his phone by his head and speak flawlessly into the mic, spilling out all the things he wishes he’d get to say to you in person. he’s out and about for work, and you aren’t always in the same timezone as him, so he’s developed a way on having you keep up with his agenda when he’s away. bonus if he sends you a picture of his bright, smiling face with a thumbs up, ready to begin his day.

happy march 1st!! kit9’s third progress report dropped today with a special bonus from nemlei!!

firat things first, we have The Entity in the thumbnail!! are they a little bigger to anyone else..? just me? anyways, the lights are a fun addition to the demon/dream world. i’m sure this has no importance whatsoever (lying)

next, we have… this. our dear protagonists caught in a compromising position, oh no!! seriously, though. what are they doing here? were they going to fuck in the car? good for them!! they don’t look very pleased to be disturbed by whoever this is, or disturbed at all. hopefully this isn’t anyone they used to know.

here, we have… the chapter two decay route vision area. you know, the one where andrew is chasing down ashley to murder her or get murdered.

yeah, that one.

it’s very interesting that we come back here. i wonder if this is still the decay route? also, why are we only seeing andrew’s little pixel sprite here? is she on one of the other sections? is this her vision or andrew’s? it seems to me that it’s ashley’s, considering we’ve been here before, but who knows!! there’s an axe and a signpost missing, and the tone of this preview reads a whole lot differently than the vision did at the end of chapter two.

i wonder what has prompted ashley to ask andrew what he wants? i wonder if he’ll be honest? i wonder if this is an important moment, or if it’s just them fucking around? god, i’m SO excited

little andy spotted!! and mrs graves. she is clearly unhappy about something, and i’m thinking it has to do with leyley. doesn’t it always, when it comes to mrs. graves? my guess is that she’s asking him to keep her out of trouble, but it’s just a guess. we’ve seen before that he only curls up in a ball like this when he’s really upset (and still does it as an adult). poor thing.

here, we see andrew with the entity in the thumbnail area, with the lights and everything. shout out to the little darkened souls in the far corners of the picture. our dear andrew is trying to negotiate with the demon.

i think that this is a huge moment in the game and the plot going forward!! assuming this is the burial route, ashley’s been asked to bring him along, AND he has that hex mark on his hand!! this demon is going to steal his soul!! ashley’s gonna be mad.

this could potentially happen in the decay route, too. if we assume the earlier dream/vision sequence is decay, this could be decay. maybe he’s going to meet the entity on his own regardless of what happens with ashley. again, who knows!!

grid-combat sandbox thing!

i get distracted with new projects a lot, but lately my brain's been hyperfocused on one in particular. i wanted to take a crack at combining 4e-style tactical combat with OSR-style sandbox play, which on the surface seem like entirely opposite directions. and they kind of are, but i think i have something

since i started work on it i ended up dropping the words "OSR" and "4e" from my descriptions of it bc i think they end up evoking the wrong image. there's a lot that's core to both playstyles that i'm omitting to make it play nicer with the other playstyle. but it's far along enough now that i can talk about some of the design philosophy and how that manifests.

little to no scaling

the traditional way modern D&D (and to an extent even old-school D&D) handles progression is with big numerical scaling. a level 2 PC has nearly twice as much HP/damage as a level 1 PC. so you scale monsters to match, because the PCs have to get into fights around their level for the game to work.

skeletons are a real danger at 1st-level. they're manageable by 3rd, easy by 5th, and a joke by 7th-level. so you just stop running into skeletons, and when you're nearing the end of that level range any skeleton encounters that do happen will have a lot of skeletons.

this is bad for sandboxes! say i'm preparing a sandbox setting ahead of time and have a dungeon with a bunch of skeletons in it somewhere. i don't know what level the PCs will find it at - depending on whether they go through it as a 2nd-level or 6th-level party, it might be incredibly easy or so dangerous there's little they can do to mitigate that difficulty. or i'll just have to redo my encounter math the moment they find it, and that sucks for both the GM and players.

so, big numerical scaling is out. there's levels, you level up, but most of what you get from that level-up is a new ability. not a big pile of hit points and more damage. there's some scaling, your numbers are like twice as big at 10th-level compared to 1st-level, but it's a small enough range that a hard encounter at 1st-level will stay relevant throughout a whole campaign.

the game's far along enough i can create & fully level a fighter PC, so i made a 1st and 10th-level (max) character and put them side-by-side to get a feel for the scaling.

the warrior class

speaking of, the first class i made is the fighter, obviously. it's always the first thing i want to get right if i'm making a D&D-like system.

this is a good showcase of what each class is going to end up looking like: you start with a few core features & two perks (3 for warrior bc i like them being customizable). warrior perks range from a few unique moves to useful passives that let you resist statuses, strike multiple enemies, move further, equip heavier gear, parry weak attacks, etc.

the two core features, versatile fighter & combat opportunist, are designed to reward you for engaging in core combat mechanics. you get bonuses to attack from high ground, and this increases that bonus. every weapon has a unique special move you can do with it, and this lets you use any weapon you have with no cost to switch.

i've never liked the way most D&D-likes handle weapons, where you design your build around one specific weapon. you invest all your feats into being The Polearm Guy and when you find a cool magic warhammer or dagger you're just like. well i don't want this. it's not a polearm. so this fighter is instead designed to encourage you to carry around a ton of different weapons and use all of them.

exploration & the ranger

i used to hang out in the 5e community a lot, and people hated the 5e ranger. why? cause nobody used the travel rules, and you can't really blame them. the game has rules for how far you can travel each day, for random encounters & whether they ambush you, foraging, encumbrance, different travel speeds.

but most people who play 5e don't want that kind of experience, and 5e half-commits to it by leaving these rules scattered through the dungeon master's guide and making them too tedious. everything's measured in real numbers - miles, minutes, pounds. you track weight with pounds instead of item slots. of course nobody wants to track encumbrance when they have to stop the game to ask the GM how many pounds the macguffin weighs. nobody wants to dig through the DMG looking for the rule that tells you how many miles you can move. it just gets in the way and stops the game, so nobody does.

all of this screws over the ranger class which gives you bonuses to things like travel speed, not being ambushed while traveling, finding more rations, and tracking. people disliked the ranger so much that a supplement came out that replaced all of their exploration features with naturey combat features and some skill boosts, and since then that's the actual ranger when anyone wants to play one.

with that context, here's the exploration features my game's ranger gets.

the feature on the left is inherent while the right two are perks. there's combat features, but they're not part of the point i wanted to make.

the ranger needs to feel useful, and for that, the exploration needs to be front and center. so what better game than one designed for sandboxes?

i don't want this to be the kind of big-damn-heroes game where you skip to the next setpiece because the travel is boring. the travel is the game. that's where the OSR influence comes in.

you track rations. it's important - if a place is far from civilization, it feels like it because there's nowhere safe nearby to restock rations.

you track encumbrance. deciding how much space to spend on arrows and rations, and how much to spend on treasure, means more decision-making.

you do hexcrawling, you track time, and you care how many days a journey takes because the world changes as time passes. enemies & other factions progress their schemes, new developments come up. so sometimes you go, wow, good thing we have a ranger - we can move 3 hexes today instead of 2!

the ranger is better at foraging rations so you can venture further into the wilderness, better at moving your party faster, better at keeping watch. i want that to matter! i can envision it being so satisfying to play a ranger and constantly come in handy. and i want parties without a ranger to wish they had one in a way that isn't just tedious.

so hopefully that gives you a good idea of the sandboxy direction for this game. will be posting about it more as i make progress, and gonna continue to support iron halberd in between this sort of thing

Tips for writing Shifting Scripts

Only script when you want to. You absolutely do not need a script to shift, it's just helpful for people who enjoy it.

Don't script every single detail unless you want to. If you want to script every single detail about your DR, that's fine, but in most cases, it'll just make scripting seem like a chore and make your connection to your DR lessen.

Write your script in first person and present/future tense. For example, instead of writing "My DR-self went and experienced (scenario)", you would write "I will experience (scenario) in my DR" or "I am experiencing (scenario) in my DR".

Add multiple forms of media!! I know a lot of shifters (including myself) use Notion to write scripts, and the website has options to add images, text, photos, and videos, and even databases to keep track of things, which idk how to use but you can look it up on YouTube.

Add a section in your script just for affirmations in your script, and just write every affirmation you can think of. Bonus points if you repeat an affirmation throughout the day.

Add a section in your script just for your progress in your shifting journey. You can add records of your attempts, what resources you used (subliminal, meditations, etc), and then when you shift you can write about that. For me it's really motivating to have my successful shifting experiences in the script itself.

Obviously, you don't have to do any of these things, these are just suggestions on things that work for me.

Before I ask this I am 110% an Elriel fan. I will be genuinely upset if she goes anywhere but Elriel. Anyway:

I try and think of possible plots for ACOTAR 5, and sometimes it's ways that Elucien or Gwynriel can happen that will make sense. I have a a fear for ACOTAR 5/CC3, and that's time jump.

Stay with me. What if Azriel goes with Bryce to Midgard, helps her there quick, and returns to Pryanthian and 5+ years have gone by. I think this is possible because he is the one that owns Truth Teller, and we don't know how time works across the different worlds. Think about it, Nyx would have more to do than just baby, relationships can have progressed forward without it seeming rushed. This also leaves room for Elain slowly became interested in Lucien over the years without Az. What if Az comes back, Elain is with Lucien, and he finds comfort and love with Gwyn?

I don't think we're getting answers in CC3, but my question is, why insert Gwyn into the story? Why have her around in the bonus chapter?

I can poke holes in this, but it also works. Elain still makes her choice, troves can still be found, Az would hit another low to build up around. I'm not 100% sold on this, but it is a possibility.

What SJM said about ACOWAR and ACOFAS:

SJM said years ago that the upcoming couples for the spinoff books (ACOSF and ACOTAR 5) were foreshadowed in ACOWAR and ACOFAS, which clearly show and foreshadow Nessian and Elriel.

Legends that SJM is telling in the ACOTAR Series:

SJM said in 2015 that she is retelling Firebird Legend where a guy (Lucien) saves Vasilisa from Koschei and has three winged males (Rhysand, Cassian and Azriel) end up with three sisters (Feyre, Nesta and Elain).

Gwyn being in Azriel’s bonus chapter:

The reason why Gwyn was in Azriel’s bonus chapter was to hint at Gwyn being a Lightsinger (which is not a good thing). Lightsingers are described to be evil beings who lure you in. Azriel’s shadows danced with Gwyns breath because they were reacting to her power. Nesta reacted to Gwyn’s power in a similar way in ACOSF. SJM also had a pinterest board showing images of a water nymph from a legend that lures people in.

SJM’s Elriel Pinterest board:

SJM had a Pinterest board of images that resemble Elain and Azriel together that show retellings of Blodeuwedd legend (which makes sense for Elain and Azriel to end up together) as well as Sleeping Beauty (which also makes sense that Elain and Azriel end up together).

Some random thoughts:

Azriel and Elain have had insane chemistry since they first met and have feelings for each other that have only grown more and more strong throughout each book. I don’t think SJM would ignore 4 whole books, a novella and a bonus chapter of Elain and Azriel liking each other to pair them with other people. That doesn’t make sense and would be terrible writing.

When Feyre and Mor were in the cabin, Mor painted three winged males on the wall with three females all with similar hair (Feyre, Nesta and Elain).

There is a HUGE sequence of the number 3 throughout the entire series. 3 mountain peaks, 3 winged males, 3 sisters, 3 troves, 3 friends in each friend group etc.

The cauldron was questioned TWICE. Once by Feyre and once by Azriel in his bonus chapter. That was not stated for nothing.

Azriel didn’t care at all when Gwyn was taken into the blood rite with Nesta and Emerie. He simply only cared about finding and questioning Eris. However, when Elain was taken in ACOWAR, Azriel stopped at NOTHING to get her back. Even when Nesta told him that he would die, he didn’t care. He was going to get Elain back to safety no matter what and no one was going to talk him out of it. He was also the only one who noticed Elain was missing.

Elain is SEVERLY uncomfortable around Lucien and Lucien also doesn’t like being around Elain. Feyre even notes how Elain loses her boldness when Lucien is around and how Elain shrinks in on herself. Whereas, with Azriel, Elain is comfortable, happy and bold.

SJM also said it was obvious with who’s book is next. The only one that is obvious and the only one that makes sense is Elain and Azriel. Acomaf, Acowar, Acofas and Acosf are FULL of Elain and Azriel having feelings for each other and having romantic moments.

Comic Progress

I thought it would be a fun idea to show you all how I went about making this comic since I don't see people do it very often.

Timeline:

-Day 1 Part 1-

I started by making a side profile study of what I wanted the ender king to look like and the comic thumbnails while Phil was still live, before he had even seen Missas' "house". I have hyperphantasia (I have extremely vivid mental imagery) so I already knew what I wanted everything to look like, so I was able to finish both the side profile and the full thumbnail set before Phil had even ended stream.

-Day 1 Part 2-

Took a short break to take a nap and eat some food (remember to always take breaks and save the progress you have down to send to yourself so you can see it at a different angle. It helps a lot with seeing any errors you may have made.) At this point it was getting close to when I usually sleep so I only did a little more progress before I stopped for the day.

-Day 2-

Really started pumping out more refined final sketches for about half of the pages. The only one that I didn't like was page 1 of set 2. Added text and experimented with text location

-Day 3-

I decided to make a 3d ref for page 1 of set 2 because I was struggling to get the angle right, finished the other half of the final sketches and figured out what I wanted for page 1 of set 3.

-Day 4-

Break day. Didn't do much beside deciding what angle I wanted page 2 of set 3 to be at and light edits all around. This was also the day I decided I wanted the comic to at least be translated into spanish and started asking around for a translator in different qsmp discord servers I'm in.

-Day 5-

This was the day I made my post about the comic! I started rendering 5/12 pages and finished page 3 of set 3 (sorry for the trash image quality).

-Day 6-

Decided to full send it and do all four of the main qsmp languages. @tikiloowho got me in contacts with @insertatitlehere for the french translation and @the-anime-idiot got me in contact with @/zzkkai_ for the portuguese translation (cellbit discord my beloved). While I waited for the translations to get back to me, I finished fully rendering 11/12 pages. The only one I didn't finish was the first page because I wanted to customize the enchantment table text on the book for all of the languages.

-Day 7-

Got all of the translations plus any grammar updates that got caught and implemented them into the comic and fixed any last minute edits I wanted to make. Stopped for the rest of the day to come back to check if anything else needed fixing.

-Day 8-

Posting day!!! The comic is now available in all four languages listed above! Thank you for following along and checking out my art! It really means a lot <33

Title meaning: -scourge = a terrifying and powerful cat, a cat who is a "scourge" upon their enemies. This tile is unique to Raven, as he earned it from the tales that began to spread about him once he became leader of Blood Order.

First Leader of Blood Order; he alongside several city cats founded Blood Order, and Raven was appointed their leader, much to his honor and surprise.

Tiger always told Raven he was extra weak because his claws were rather small, so raven thought, maybe he could find a new, better way to protect himself, and make his claws even stronger than Tigerclaw's ever were. They were in fact stronger than Tiger bec they disemboweled him.

Shrimp

Ok so Shrimp is public enemy #1 and I love him. He's the funny little guy you see on your loading screen during the game who you don't think much of until eventually you find an asylum on one of the floors of the Upturned Inn and oops! Shrimp is there! And you need to free him to progress, which Ik is alarmed by even though you can also just tell him you didn't see/free Shrimp. You can put a collar on this little guy to make him look snazzy, despite how little he's with you. On the floors where he's friendly he kind of just follows you around, so you get to have a little buddy for parts of the game! He's basically just your pet dog who may or may not be severely dangerous. And by may or may not I mean a definite yes he is, because he turns aggressive when he gets especially hungry. He can eat the food objects scattered around, though, so that's avoidable! He can also stay with you for nice little elevator rides, which does concern Ik, but it works out! until he starts trying to attack you but if you don't feed your dog then I don't care if it attacks you [additional propaganda 1]

OOOOOH Remastered as Animals Behind Scenes

Oh wow, Ginkgo you're actually getting somewhere with the backgrounds- not I'm not lol. Backgrounds are still a killer, not to mention I had no idea how I wanted to make their den to look like on the inside. So I just went with the general: it's a hollowed out tree.

Another thing I ran into was how I wanted J to look like. I had settled on a fox prior to even starting Sleep nuzi comic. Further solidified by @electronix-arts post on J fox (go show some love on that post, it's an amazing idea :3)

But once I got past the sketching... I hit a wall. The colors for J had to be tested. I tried going with the usual color that I depict N, based off of his merch color. But it didn't seem to fit quite right like it did with V. So I decided to switch her over to the more common red fox palette. There are some foxes that are grey! But I didn't like the way the colors mashed with my style.

A funny thing I ran into was J doing the bap bap to get N's sensor back online. First it was a thought of letting J slap him with her nanite tail, buuuut I didn't like that idea. So instead I went with J just smacking him like a cat would- foxes are dog hardware with a cat software, you cannot change my mind. Then it was an issue of how I wanted it to look like.

Went through two versions, before scrapping it and finding the perfect reference photo.

As per usual, some shots of the process. Get possessed by the absolute solver that gives you yet another insane idea. Sketch, outline and color, aaaand render!

I've been making progress on yet another project I decided to add onto myself! I really gotta stop, I have too many ideas and not enough time (proceeds to pile on another 3). It might take a little while longer because... very suddenly, a lot of exams were upon me 😅. I will try my best to still get it out by this week, but if not, then definitely next week. ^_^
