The story of Icarus needs no introduction. The Greek tale of a young man who flew too close to the sun on handcrafted wings and fell back to earth is one most of us are familiar with, and has been riffed on for years. I’ve often see people take a more romantic route with the story, with the sun portrayed as a beautiful temptation Icarus couldn’t resist. That’s all well and good, and it’s an interesting take, but usually people would portray the sun as female. Meanwhile, Greek mythology often represented the sun through male figures, most notably Apollo or Helios. What’s more, Apollo was often depicted as having relationships with men. I thought it’d be fun to add my own interpretation of the story with this idea in mind. This was a challenge, but I worked so hard on this piece and I’m so happy with how it turned out!
