Pirate AU - Shore Leave

A coupla times this week I randomly got inspired to write some Pirate AU stuff.  And I got some good news yesterday, so I decided I’d post the stuff I wrote.  Like a gift to myself, that kind of thing.

So here’s some more Pirate AU content, but most importantly, some Pirate AU Stangie content.  Plus a bit of bonus Shermie content.  Enjoy.

              “Thanks for watching the kids, Maria,” Stan whispered. “You can head home.”  Maria got up from the kitchen table.  On her way out, she tsked at Angie.

              “You know better, mija.  Be smarter and faster next time.”

              “Of course, Maria,” Angie said.  Maria shook her head disapprovingly one last time, then left.

              “Sit down, you gotta get off your feet,” Stan instructed his wife.  Angie obediently took a seat at the table.  Stan sat next to her.  “Angie.”

              “It’s a good thing I’m pregnant,” Angie said jovially.  Stan scowled.

              “Then we must be defining ‘good thing’ differently,” he growled.

              “If I wasn’t pregnant, I wouldn’t have been able to delay ‘em hangin’ me,” Angie said.  “Without that, you ‘n the crew wouldn’t have rescued me from the clink in time.”

              “You got caught pirating!” Stan snapped.  “You were about to be hanged!  Yeah, you were able to delay it this time, but next time?” Silently, he thanked whatever deity he believed in that day that they had come back from the rescue mission late enough the kids were asleep.

              Don’t want ‘em to see their parents fight. And judging by Angie’s already frustrated expression, this was definitely going to be a fight.

              “There won’t be a next time.”

              “You’re damn right.”  Stan met Angie’s eyes squarely.  “‘Cause you’re giving up piracy.”  Angie’s eyes flashed with anger.

              “You have no right-”

              “To what?  Want my wife safe?  Want my kids to grow up with both parents?  Angie, I can’t- I can’t live like this anymore!  I can’t watch you go to sea, knowing that you might not come back.  I love you too damn much to let you keep throwing your life away like this!”

              “This is the first time I’ve been caught,” Angie said, but her voice lacked some of the bite it had earlier.

              “Now that it’s happened once, it’s gonna happen again.”  Stan reached out and took ahold of one of Angie’s hands.  He rubbed the back of her hand with his thumb, feeling the thick scars from years of piracy.  “There are some injuries that, when you recover from ‘em, you’re never the same. You’ve had a lot of those.  It’s already started catching up with you. You know that.”  Angie looked away.

              “I…”

              “Give me a single reason you can’t leave piracy.”

              “You know my reasons.”

              “They were reasons you had when you first started. But they don’t matter anymore, Ang! Your name – your real one – got cleared. You’ve got a family and a home. You’ve got money.  Give me a reason that still applies.”

              “I…”  Angie looked down at the floor.  After a moment, she sighed.  Without saying a word, she got up and walked away.

              Shit.  Did I overstep?  Stan started to get up.  No. He sat back down.  Give her a bit of space.  You know how she is.  When a few minutes had passed, Stan couldn’t hold himself back any longer.  He followed her outside.  In the light of the full moon, he could see her talking to Dan. He walked over.

              “Thanks fer savin’ me,” Angie said quietly.  “Not just- not just tonight.  All those other times.  I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t fer you.”  Wordlessly, Dan enveloped her in a hug.  “Take good care of her, Dan,” Angie said, her voice cracking with emotion. They broke apart.  Dan ruffled Angie’s hair, nodded at Stan, and began to walk down the road that led to town.

              “What was that about?” Stan asked.  Angie’s shoulders shook.  “Ang, is everything all right?”

              “No!  I’m- I’m pregnant, I’m sure it’s twins again, I was almost hanged tonight, and I just gave up everything I spent most of my life buildin’ up!” Angie snapped.

              “You…”

              “Dan’s goin’ to run Sweet Viola fer a few months before easin’ her out of the game.”  Angie’s head drooped.  “This pirate king is hangin’ up her crown.”

              “Angie.”  Stan tilted Angie’s chin to look into her eyes.  Eyes the color of the sea.  “Thank you.”

              “You never thank folks,” Angie mumbled.

              “That’s how you know I’m serious.”  Stan grinned.  “And you’re not giving up all the shit you spent so long on.  You’ve still got me.  You’ve still got the kids.  All five of ‘em.”

              “No, darlin’, it’s definitely goin’ to be six,” Angie insisted.

              “What makes you so sure?”

              “A woman knows.”

              “If you say so.”

              “That’s no way to talk to yer captain.”

              “You just gave up your ship,” Stan pointed out. Angie looked away.  Stan wrapped an arm around her shoulders.  “I’m just kidding, babe.  You’ll always be my captain.”

              “Damn straight,” Angie muttered.  “By the way, I might be givin’ up piracy, but I ain’t givin’ up thievery.”

              “Good,” Stan said.  “I’m gonna need your help to keep the shop stocked.”  Angie managed a soft laugh.  The two stayed outside.  Their home was atop a seaside cliff, from which they could see the dark ocean reflecting the pale moonlight.

              Angie buried her head in Stan’s shirt, crying, as her ship disappeared over the horizon for the last time.

              They walked past a shop with a number of nice dresses in the storefront window.  Promptly, Danny and Daisy made a beeline for it, cooing over the fancy fabrics.  The whole family was in town to run a few errands.  Stan glanced at his wife.  Angie wasn’t happy she had been dragged out of the house, but Emmett refused to go anywhere without her.

              “Mama, look!” Danny said excitedly, pointing at the dresses.  Angie forced a smile.

              “Yes, dear, they’re very nice.”

              “You should get it!  It would look so pretty on you!”

              “She’s got a point,” Stan whispered to her. Angie sighed heavily.

              “It would be nice to have some more clothin’ options.  I noticed the other day that I don’t have many dresses.”

              “What are you talking about?  You’ve got plenty!”

              “Yes, fer this!”  Angie gestured to her enormous baby bump.  With how big she was getting, Stan had finally begun to agree Angie was likely right, that they were having twins for a third time.  “But after I give birth?  Most of the clothes what ‘ll fit me were fer workin’ on the ship.”

              “So, something that a nice housewife wouldn’t wear,” Stan said.  Angie nodded. “Well, want me to treat you to somethin’ nice?”  Angie rolled her eyes.

              “I don’t think even you can steal a whole dress in public without bein’ caught, darlin’.”

              “I wasn’t gonna steal it.  I was gonna buy it.”

              “Buy it?”  Angie put her hands on her hips.  “Who are you and what have ya done with my husband?” she asked, aghast. Stan laughed.  “It’s prob’ly expensive.  I’m fine.”

              “After the kids are born and you’re back to normal, I’ll get you somethin’ fancy, okay?” Stan said.  He held out his arm.  Angie took it with a smile.

              “All right.  If ya insist.”  She leaned in to talk quietly.  “Darlin’, in all seriousness, yer okay with buyin’ somethin’ rather than stealin’ it?”

              “Ang, I haven’t done much crime ashore.  Only small stuff I know I can get away with. I didn’t wanna risk getting caught and leaving the kids all alone while you were at sea.”

              “…Right.”  Angie sighed again.  “I keep forgettin’ how little I’ve been on land with you ‘n the kids.”

              “You’ve got plenty of time to catch up on everything.”

              “Yes.  Since I’m now permanently on shore leave.”  Angie raised her voice.  “Girls, leave the dresses alone, we have to go to the market.”  Reluctantly, Danny and Daisy abandoned the dresses and ran back to their parents.

              “Papa, I wanna piggy-back ride,” Daisy whined.  From his perch atop Stan’s shoulders, Emory blew a raspberry at his older sister.

              “Emory’s got littler legs than you do,” Stan said. Daisy crossed her arms.

              “Emmett’s walking just fine!” she argued, gesturing at Emmett, who was holding Stan’s hand.

              “What have we talked about?” Angie asked patiently. Daisy pouted.

              “Being a good big sister,” she muttered.  Angie ruffled her hair.

              “Don’t worry, honey, when we get to the market, you can do some more pocket practice,” she cooed.  Daisy’s eyes lit up.  She nodded. The family continued walking down the street, Danny and Daisy running ahead eagerly.  Stan grinned cheekily at Angie.

              “You’re getting lazy, having the kids pickpocket for you,” he teased.

              “I’m too pregnant to be quiet and get away fast,” Angie said.

              “Fair.”

              “I’m glad that even if yer not willin’ to do much crime lately, yer not extendin’ that to the kidlets.”

              “It’s a lot easier to brush off a six-year-old taking something than a grown adult.”

              “Mm, true enough.”  Angie smoothed the fabric of her dress.  “Once I’m shipshape, I’ll get to restockin’ the shop, darlin’.”  She smirked.  “I’m damn fine at sleight of hand.  Not to mention, no one would accuse the sweet housewife of larceny.”  Stan chuckled.

              “I knew I married the right woman.”

              “Mama, what’s larson?” Emmett asked abruptly. Angie smiled at her son.

              “A grown-up word ya don’t need to worry ‘bout.”

              “Like ‘damn’,” Emory said helpfully.  Stan and Angie grimaced.

              “…We should probably work on cleaning up our sailors’ mouths if we wanna avoid attracting attention,” Stan said quietly. Angie nodded.

              “Agreed.”

              Shermie walked up to the unassuming house.  A large sign outside read “McGucket’s Marine Antiques”.

              This is the right place, then.  Good.  Being a merchant, Shermie had to spend a lot of time away from his family, so he made sure to bring back souvenirs from each trip.  This trip, to a small town called Gravity Falls, had been woefully bereft of potential souvenirs.  As such, he’d been relieved when a local told him about the store on the edge of town full of fun and sparkly things.

              “Ma’am,” he said politely to the woman sitting on the porch, supervising two toddler boys playing on the front lawn.  On either side of her was a basket holding a young infant.  The woman looked up at him curiously.  Recognition flickered in her eyes.  She opened her mouth to say something, but before she could, one of the infants began to fuss.  The woman quickly began to soothe the infant.                 Shermie ducked into the house.  The room he was in looked like a proper shop.  Shelves lined the walls, groaning underneath the merchandise.  Some larger items, like a rusted anchor, were set on the floor, with price tags that seemed far too high to Shermie.  Two young girls in the corner giggled to each other as they picked through a box on the floor full of even more small items.

              “Welcome to McGucket’s Marine Antiques!” a voice boomed. A familiar voice.  Shermie’s eyes widened.  He turned.  Behind the store counter was a face he hadn’t seen in over a decade.

              “Stanley?” Shermie croaked.  His little brother gaped.

              “…Shermie?”

              “Stan, what are you- how- you-”  Shermie ran his hands through his hair.  “The people in town said the man who ran this store was named Stan McGucket, not Stan Pines.”  Stan grimaced.

              “Yeah.  Uh…” Stan looked over at the girls in the corner.  “Danny, Daisy.”  The girls looked up.  One had the distinctive Pines nose.  “If anyone comes in, go get your ma and have her handle the customer.”  The girls nodded.  “All right, Shermie, come with me, I’ll answer all your questions.”

              “You better,” Shermie mumbled.  Stan pushed open a door located behind the counter. Shermie followed him into the house proper.  The living room they walked into was cozy and nautical-themed, full of décor that looked like it came from a ship.  Stan gestured to a couch.  Shermie sat down.  Stan sat in a chair across from him.

              “The people in town said this place was run by Stan McGucket because it is.”

              “But how-”

              “I’ll tell you everything, but first, what do you know?” Stan asked.  Shermie raised an eyebrow.

              That’s…interesting.  Stan’s careful dodge reminded Shermie a lot of how his brother would construct lies as a teen.  He would ask what someone knew, then build his lie around that information.  Asking first allowed him to avoid contradicting something known to the person he was lying to.  Hopefully he’s not lying to me now.  I’ve fallen out of practice seeing through Stan’s lies.

              “You were captured by pirates over a decade ago,” Shermie said, deciding to take Stan at face value.  “At some point after you were captured by pirates, Stanford disappeared at sea.”  Stan nodded.

              “Yeah, that’s right.”  He sighed.  “Ford actually caught up to the ship I was captive on.  I got free in the fight, but Ford…he…”  Stan looked down at the ground.  “Well, I didn’t see his body, so I’m holding onto the hope that he’s still alive.”

              “Stan…”

              “The people in town know me as Stan McGucket ‘cause that’s my name now,” Stan continued, talking over Shermie.  “While I was captured by pirates, one of them decided he liked my name and took it.  I didn’t like the idea of sharing a name with a pirate, so I took my wife’s last name.”

              That smells like a lie.  Shermie’s brain caught up with what Stan was saying.  Wait, what?

              “You’re married?” Shermie asked.

              “Yeah.  You saw Angie – my wife – outside.  At least, I hope you did.  She said she was watching four of the kids out there.”

              “I…”  Shermie kneaded his forehead.  “Okay. Now I need to know how you met your wife.”

              “After I escaped from the pirates, I decided to stay at sea to look for Ford.  I didn’t- I didn’t wanna come home without him, y’know?”

              “Yes, I do,” Shermie said quietly.

              “I managed to get a spot on board a merchant ship where her brother, Lute, was first mate.  He was looking for her after she got captured by pirates.  Eventually, we found the ship she was on and rescued her.”

              “You…you rescued your future wife from pirates?” Shermie asked, dumbfounded.  Stan nodded. “Why am I not surprised?”  Stan smirked slightly.

              “We both stayed at sea as merchants,” he continued, “and fell in love pretty quick.  After we had the first set of twins, I decided to move ashore with ‘em. Angie, she, uh-”  He laughed quietly.  “She decided to keep sailing.  Even after we had another set of twins.”

              “Really?”

              “What can I say?  I married a free spirit.”

              Makes sense Stan would find someone like himself.

              “When she found out she was pregnant for the third time, though, we had a long talk, and decided that she’d move ashore with me permanently.  I like having her close by.”

              “I’d imagine having her help with the kids would be nice as well.”

              “Eh.  We’ve got some former crewmates in town that love watching the kids,” Stan said with a shrug.  “That’s why we settled here.  With that help, keeping track of the kids wasn’t what I was concerned about.  I missed my wife.”  There was something more, though.  A haunted look lingered in Stan’s eyes.

              “You were worried about her safety,” Shermie said. Stan looked away.  “I can’t blame you.  It’s dangerous to be a merchant.”

              He’s already lost his twin to the sea.  Of course he doesn’t want to lose his wife, too.

              “Yeah, well.”  Stan cleared his throat.  “I’ve got Angie on shore with me now.  We’ve got six great kids.  Life’s pretty good.”

              “Yes.  I can see that.  Mom will be relieved to hear you’re fine.”

              “She’s gonna show up within a week of you telling her,” Stan mumbled.

              “Can you blame her?” Shermie asked.  Stan shook his head.

              “Not after having my own kids, no.”  The door opened.  The woman from outside, who Shermie now knew to be Stan’s wife, Angie, poked her head into the room.

              “Darlin’, should I be plannin’ on an extra person fer dinner?” she asked.  Shermie tried to hide his surprise at Angie’s strong accent.

              “No need,” Shermie said, getting up from the couch. “I need to be going back to my ship before long.  But before I head out, I should do what I came here to do.”

              “What’d you come here for?” Stan asked, getting up as well.

              “To buy something for my kids.”  Shermie raised an eyebrow.  “Might I be able to get a family discount from my little brother that disappeared for ten years?”  Stan sighed heavily.  “If I get a good deal, I might forget to mention you to Mom for a few days…”  A twinkle appeared in Stan’s eye.

              “Make it a week, and I’ll see what I can do.”

              “Deal.”

fuck it. balance youtuber au because i’ve been thinking about it

(modern au with no magic but still elves/dwarves/etc)

the twins have a joint channel but they post things together as often as they make videos on their own. they do vlogs, story times, and challenge videos both together and not, but do stuff with fashion/makeup together. taako does cooking on his own and lup does chemistry experiments that involve fire more often than not. if someone says they like the twins’ videos it’s a wild card as to what they watch them for, but everyone ends up liking all of their content because who can hate the twins? they have a lot of “annoying influencer” energy but are actually really nice to fans/people in general and donate a lot of their Youtube Money to charities and stuff (all of the ipre does this too because fuck rich people except for them)

magnus’ channel is mostly woodworking/construction projects. he does occasional story times and in every one he’s carving and/or painting a wooden duck. he does vlogs too and half of them are him buying more woodworking stuff (idk shit about it so idk what he’d get lol) and the other half have a part where he sees someone walking a dog and him going to meet them. almost every video includes/mentions julia and people make “magnus talking about julia” compilations bc he loves his wife and talks about her all the time. he’s very positive in general and everyone loves how he’s a human golden retriever

merle’s channel is 99% gardening, 1% collating with the others. he made one joke along the lines of plant fucking and it was not serious at all but his subscribers/followers made into such a big joke that he makes at least one joke per video except for when his kids are in the video, which is when he makes it suuuper educational and fun and wholesome. mookie tries to eat the plants and play with the soil and mavis tells her dad about what she’s learned about biology in school. also he puts “(emotional)” and “(not clickbait)” at the end of video titles randomly despite knowing what they mean

barry’s channel is science-centric (yes he collabs with lup frequently) but about more feilds of science. sometimes he goes on rants about theoretical physics like a madman a la bdg’s unraveled series and sometimes he makes videos titled “making the volcano kitchen experiment but the size of a kiddie pool (emotional).” he also has a series about paranormal activity/cryptids, stuff like “why ghosts should be and are real” and “my top five favorite pieces of bigfoot evidence” and like i said this is a no magic au but he once was asked in a q&a about what he’d do if he was a lich and gave a surprisingly detailed response? people were really confused but intrigued?? did barry invent magic???

lucretia 100% has an art channel, but she also writes prose and poetry in her free time and sometimes reads them for videos. she posts speedpaints of her work (digital and traditional) with her telling her process/inspiration or doing story times as the background audio. she had a period of time where she started writing a whole novel in her spare time (basically the balance story but different characters) and all her videos were her making concept art. her fans loved it and boosted it to the point where it actually got published, so now she’s a best selling author with a seven book series. now she keeps making videos of her concept art for other book ideas (the other arcs) with her infodumping about the characters/plot/etc

davenport doesn’t actually have a channel, but has been in the background of all the others’ videos to the point where he’s treated like a cryptid and has a small fanbase of his own. he’s mostly in merle’s videos (because they’re dating) and magnus’ vlogs (because magnus Loves His Friends) but he’s been in at least a handful of everyone’s videos. he makes a twitter and instantly gets thousands of followers. he tweets the most random shit at the most random times and half of them become memes. people find out he’s a professor at the college the rest of them met at and everyone looses it

kravitz is in a similar position as davenport, but he was convinced to start a channel. he mostly does stuff involving antiques because he collects them, so he does haul videos of what he bought or thrifted and videos of him restoring them as he looks up how old they were and what random shit they were used for and stuff. people make compilations of him getting off topic and going on a tangent about taako then realizing he just rambled for ten minutes and getting flustered. he also plays a handful of classical instruments and makes occasional collabs with lup + barry

despite having completely different channels they’re all friends??? people didn’t know at first but they found out through davenport and kravitz “this one guy who i think is dating taako but i’m not sure and idk his name” showing up in everyone’s videos. from then on they started collabing more often and it’s really fun to see them outside of their element. lup once almost burnt down magnus’ workshop while making a chemistry video with him. taako tried to teach kravitz how to make macaroons (keyword: tried) and kravitz talked about this new antique shop he found the whole time. barry went on and on and on about biology while gardening with merle, who tried to follow along but failed and ended up making fun of all the scientific names for plants

they call themselves the red robes after the main characters in lucretia’s novel (they’re not similar to the characters but there’s seven of them and six youtubers + one davenport)

they once did a big group collab where the twins dressed everyone up in high fashion outfits and lucretia painted a big portrait of all of them. it was very wholesome but also had a lot of lup and taako arguing over what accessory fits who and “no this person should do their hair like this!” and at one point magnus and kravitz just dipped to go play cards and talk about dogs

speaking of wholesome angus has a channel of his own which is mostly booktube with him getting halfway through a mystery novel, predicting the ending, and being 100% correct. he’s done videos with the others and is kinda associated with them but not totally, and is often lovingly referred to as the nephew to the rest of them

killian and carey don’t have a channel but are in the bg of magnus’ videos often. they were referred to as “magnus’ lesbian friends” until they got popular on instagram and became an internet power couple. johann has a small channel and a soundcloud he plays violin on and did one (1) collab with lup and it made him blow up overnight. avi has a semi-popular twitter and is mostly known as johann’s bf. sloane and hurley have a channel about drag racing/cars in general and don’t show their faces and go by the raven and ram

i was trying to think of who’d have a gaming channel and it’s 100% graham, who casually mentions that he’s friends with Pro Wrestler Jess The Beheader

lucas has a science focused channel similar to barry’s where he tries to be educational and ends up being annoying/kind of wrong about it. barry has a mini series called “lucas miller is a bitch here’s why” and it’s him disproving lucas’ theories with a deadpan expression and generally being better at science than him

remember when i said taako and lup have influencer energy despite being nice? yeah, lydia and edward are like that but they’re actually annoying. they have a popular makeup/fashion channel and lup and taako have gotten into slight drama with them over how the wonderland twins have been rude to them and the how the red robe twins are “jealous.” the internet is divided over who likes which pair of twins better

lup learns that greg fucking grimauldis (who the twins knew in high school) has a popular twitter/insta platform and tweets the “i am to collect” speech out of nowhere from everyone’s pov. taako tweets the video he took of him telling her and her immediately going “no fucking way that ASSHOLE is getting away with what he did to me” and opening twitter. it becomes a meme and he pays her back and changes his social media handles to “gregfuckinggrimauldis”

i can’t think of anything else because i don’t know enough about youtube but yeah.

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

Ehhhhhhhhh not really? I used to try to respond to every comment I got, but I quickly learned I’m not good at doing that. I only really reply anymore on request books to let the person know I fulfilled their wish. 

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Hard to say since for a while I was fucking addicted to the angstiest shit possible. All my most brutal stuff is on anon though lol. I guess my most angsty fic that doesn’t dip into NSFL territory is All That Mattered. Basically a guy kills his friend in a past life and wakes up with all the memories of it. Meanwhile his friend has no idea what happened and acts like he’s still his bestie. The killer has to live with the guilt of what he did while pretending nothing happened for the sake of his friend’s happiness. 

Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

No. IDK What to say, I just don’t enjoy writing or reading them. 

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Considering what I like to do as well as the sort of stuff I used to specialize in, people have been surprisingly kind to me. Only fandom I’ve gotten any negativity from was Dream SMP. One person told me to starve myself. I’ve also gotten a few people tell me I made them vomit, and made them want to rip out their eyes and erase their memories. That was on my more brutal stuff though, so I just take that as a sign I had done my job right. 

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Heeeeelllllllll yeah. Pretty much everything except underage, age play, scat, and farts. 

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

YEAH TWICE. The first time someone said they loved my fic and asked if they could “adapt” it. I said yes while not really knowing what this person had meant. When I checked their profile the next day they had copy-pasted my fic, its description, and all the tags word for word and changed out the names so that it would fit into a different fandom. At least they credited me in the notes at the end. My fic was waaaaaay more popular though, so I don’t care LOL. I also think it’s flattering that they thought my stuff was good enough to steal. 

The second time I had quickly typed up a oneshot which I would never consider my best work. A few hours later I saw a fic with the same title, description, tags, and general plot posted by someone on anon. I guess they read my fic and thought they could do better. All time favorite? I don’t know, there’s so many to love. That’s like asking “What’s your favorite food?”; it’s impossible to choose one. 

Whats a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Happy Family Coraline AU. I had already written out the scene where the Beldam throws Coraline into that room with the ghosts in it. I had recieved some good feedback on that bit. I did some more world building, but could never figure everything out. It’s been months since I touched it, so I guess I’m gonna call it done forever. 

What are your writing strengths?

I like to think that I’m good at angst.

Character descriptions T_T. Can I not just give them different pronouns so you know who’s talking and call it a day?

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

This one’s complicated. 

Usually when it’s done it’s when a character only says a word or two in their native language, a sentence at most. Sometimes it’s to show personal relationships (Like an Arabic woman calling her boyfriend her habibi). Other times it’s to exaggerate how ‘exotic’ a character is (Like a Spanish character saying “MADRE DIOS” every time he’s in a scene). Or it’s to sound fancy (Like saying “Cafe de Merde pas Cher” instead of “Cheap shitty coffee”). 

I’m monolingual, so it’s not my business to police or critique how other people write language. But I have spoken to multilinguals, and from what I’ve heard writers rarely do a good job of accurately depicting this sort of thing. Things like having to translate stuff in your head so you seem less intelligent in your non-native language, or forgetting common words in every language you know, or saying things like “hand shoe” instead of “glove”. And sometimes this inaccurate writing can be harmful and enforce stereotypes as well as just not be fun to read. 

As a monolingual, I feel like most of the time it’s... unnecessary. Especially if it’s not accurate to how people of that language talk. Sometimes it works just fine to say “He whispered praises to him in his mother tongue”. Having words of a different language randomly in dialogue can be distracting. (The worst offenders are in movies where even the subtitles just say “Speaking in (language)”). 

We can all agree on one thing though, actually know what words mean before using them. Do some proper research on linguistics instead of relying on Google Translate to spare yourself from becoming a laughing stock.

Hetalia LOL. Back in Jr. High. I’m not sharing that shit.

The Sun Always Came Up. Just a bit of hurt/comfort.

How strictly do you follow canon?  — I’d say pretty closely, in the sense that I don’t erase any parts of his canon, and I try to analyze and ‘ make sense ‘ of the different things he does in canon. There are some parts of his canon that have been re-written though. Like his relationship with Grimmjow, thanks to their chemistry. Oh, yeah, and Nnoitra is also alive in my canon. But other than that I try to keep him as canon as possible. 

SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  Oh gosh where to start... Nnoitra is a very deep character. He is typically disliked by those who only see his exterior, but there is so much more to him. He is brave beyond compare. He is not the typical ‘ pretty-boy-sassy-villain ‘. He is harsh, rude, violent, sadistic and carries a heavy sadness inside him. He has strong believes and won’t back down from anything. Ever. He is someone who doesn’t hold back his true self and while he can be very challenging to interact with - isn’t that part of what’s fun with interactions? That they’re not all supposed to be easy. And, of course, one of my favorite parts about my Nnoitra is the big modern!au story that I have created for him, where he has a completely different life, while still maintaining what I hope is a legit translation of his canon personality into a human!au. Another thing that makes my Nnoitra interesting - in my opinion - is that I’m in it with him for the long run. I’m here to build long-lasting relationships of all types. I’m here to write stories for him with others. 

Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  Nnoitra is very difficult to get along with for most muses. He’s rude and sexist and also a bigot. These things really put people off, but I’m not going to water down my muse for anyone or anything. In canon verse he is very set on killing more or less anyone who approaches him, which can mean that a lot of interactions turn into fight-threads which some people aren’t interested in writing. He is also rather anti-social so.. Yeah, not the easiest to interact with for sure. 

What inspired you to rp your muse?  — I originally found my inspiration for him when I started drawing him way back in the days. I randomly drew him and got hooked on how inspiring he was to draw. I never experienced an art-block ever again. After over a year, after I had gotten into rping ( I was rping different characters ), I eventually wanted to try my hand at writing Nnoitra, and it’s been the best decision ever. Now I’m stuck with him forever ahahaha.

What keeps your inspiration going?  —  Nnoitra IS my inspiration. He is my muse. Definition of ‘ muse ‘:  a person or personified force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist. I can’t imagine not writing him. I never have a problem with inspiration when it comes to writing him, since writing him gives me inspiration.

Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?  —  Yes and no. If I ASK for criticism, then I’m happy to receive any kind of criticism. However, if I’m not prepared for it, and get random criticism out of the blue, then eh, I’m not really into that. 

Do you like questions, which help you explore your character?  —  Oh yes! I love headcanon questions! I always answer them IC, unless the question is specifically aimed at me, like: “toby what do you think about...”. I feel really flattered when people show interest in Nnoitra!

If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?  —  Not really. I don’t like discussing meta / headcanons about Nnoitra. If people disagree with my headcanons, they are free to make their own Nnoitra blog and do their thing. 

If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?  —  People have different opinions and that’s fine. I would prefer that if people who disagrees with my portrayal just unfollow me. I take my portrayal of Nnoitra very seriously and put a lot of effort into it. However, if I ASK for criticism, then I am completely open for it and would like to hear people’s disagreements on my portrayal. In general though, I don’t like discussing it. I don’t like discussing meta or anything like that, because I’m not open to changing my portrayal of him. 

If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  —  If a mod hates Nnoitra, I don’t mind that at all. I don’t mind if they post hate-content about him either, as long as they tag it, so that I don’t have to see it. I don’t like seeing Nnoitra bashed in public. For example, I block blogs that post hate on him to the #nnoitra gilga tags on here. I just think it’s unnecessary and I don’t want to see it. My followers and mutuals are free to hate Nnoitra, and it can often be interesting to have your muse interact with someone who hates them / they hate, so I totally understand. Nnoitra is not a very likeable character after all, and people are free to hate him. 

Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  —  Absolutely! I am not a native speaker, so I am sure I make a lot more grammatical errors than I’m aware of. If people want to point them out to me, I see that as a favor to me. 

Do you think you are easy going as a mun?   —  Yes, I think so. I’m chill even if I am very slow at answering messages. I always try to be kind and understanding and I hope people don’t feel intimidated by me even if I play a very mean character.

     As closely as possible, considering there’s not very much to work with in regards to his canon to begin with. There’s a lot of freedom in picking up any kind of minor canon character. I look mainly to expand on what little is present. I adore fleshing out even the smallest ideas so having something I can comfortably build on is great.

     Pica is loyal, beyond anything. Strong, well-built, and never wavering. Regardless of the situation, he is always on task, diligent to the last moment and perhaps longer. Devotion and collected functionality make a grand guardian. Always acts as a pillar; a collected foundation of a man centered around dedicated familial values. Being in contact with stone makes him nigh invincible, granting him not only the protective assimilation but the literal stature and appearance of a stone goliath given enough material. Strategic with respectable swordsmanship, constantly protective of what’s important. He’s nice on the eyes, quiet, and a good listener. There’s order and beauty laced within all that cataclysmic chaos just waiting to be found. 

Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).

     Distant, stoic, absolutely terrible with expression that isn’t hateful and violent. Pica is very strict, lacking a sense of humor. His voice is extremely disruptive. The smallest remarks set his short fuse alight and it burns on and on until there’s nothing left. That murderous intent settles for very few things, and getting him to open up is a long, grueling process. He’s self-conscious but in an overbearingly cocky way, in that pride often masks everything genuine. He thinks very highly of himself and looks down on other people constantly. He’s uncooperative, constantly wrapped up in solemn business, and heavily against indirect methods. Abrasiveness is a weapon and he uses it without remorse. Stubbornness and general unwillingness to speak with strangers make attempting to converse with him the equivalent of talking to a wall. Pica is impatience, wrath, and apathy tied together with coarse cobblestone.

What inspired you to rp your muse?

     As odd as it sounds, I found certain parts of Pica relatable in very specific, personal ways. People never took me seriously when I was upset because I was so small ( sometimes they still don’t dskdsks- ). For awhile when I was younger my voice was really deep and hoarse due to adenoid issues. Speaking in general was hard, because breathing was hard. It made me sound very masculine, especially over any kind of voice-only system. Normally adenoids aren’t an issue at that point because they’re vestigial and tend to essentially be shrunk down to nothing. But something ( probably fighting off infections and never shrinking/bad allergies, nobody knows ) blew mine up and they were blocking 3/4ths of my airway for ages without anyone having any idea what was going on until it got bad enough to the point it was obvious something was wrong. I couldn’t have any stuffed animals in my room because it was legitimately dangerous and a lot of my non hypoallergenic stuff had plastic covers on it. Made me really sad. Eventually they were surgically removed, and it cleared up my breathing and in time my voice was relatively normal. Before then, nothing felt worse to me then than struggling to breathe trying to defend myself in tandem with all the emotional stress it brought on me. 

     I was always quiet and distant otherwise, and a lot of people thought I was just weird and unapproachable ( unless you wanted a laugh, anyway ). There were days before I made my small group of good friends I’d just spend sitting under the stairwell up against a wall eating lunch by myself. I’m probably one of the few people that listened to Pica talk for the first time and didn’t immediately burst into laughter. I didn’t completely click with him at that point, but watching that one little thing turn into a running gag constantly coming back to undermine everything else that was amazing about him really set my feelings in stone... pun completely intended. I’ve loved him ever since. That inspiration and adoration has only grown with time.

What keeps your inspiration going?

     Quite a few things. Aside from the constant love pouring from my being, I love looking at highly detailed stonework. It’s beautiful. Scrolling through rolling mountain landscapes, listening to certain songs, daydreaming in between sentences. I never really lose inspiration for Pica. Something new hits me every day in the most mundane tasks. A lot of it does go unshared, but some of it is personal and other times I simply don’t have the energy or reason. Very well I could be brimming with inspiration for him all day and have nowhere really to put it without excess. Getting opportunities to do so really makes me smile, though. It’s amazing how much being invested in a character will keep your inspiration at an all time high even when you’re having a rough time. Sometimes all it takes is just an extra comment from someone else or an occurrence or some kind of image to put you right back on track. For me, seeing any kind of lovely stonework or abandoned, run down places really sets my inspiration for him in motion.

     Actual criticism, yes. I don’t mind it. At the same time, however, I’m really just here to have a good time ─ as is everybody else. Growing and developing my writing is always a bonus when I’ve the experience here in an environment I’m comfortable with, but critique isn’t exactly something I go hunting for. I’m here to write the characters I love and adore and honestly, sometimes, it’s better to have the freedom to do things as you wish without the worry of receiving it, no matter how well-intended it may be. It’s all chill times and good vibes doing what we enjoy most.

     Absolutely! I love randomly being sent things that keep me thinking with any character. I’m always looking for little intricacies and tidbits to really bring them to life. Sometimes it takes a bit for me to think of something appropriate but I always appreciate the brain candy when it comes to new details! It goes without saying that I’ll happily accept anything that gives reason to my constant, aimless musings related to Pica.

If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?

     Yes and no? I always love hearing other ideas on why someone else’s headcanons differ from my own. For all I know it might be enough to change my mind or, at the very least, give me a different perspective on something I’ve never thought about before. I’m always curious about stuff when it relates to a character I love. As long as they’re not rude about it and we’ve talked to the point it’s not out of the blue, it’s okay. On the other hand, it doesn’t really matter if someone disagrees. We all have our own headcanons and it’s very easy to be respectful about them. Despite what has already been said, there’s a high chance I’m going to keep to my own headcanons as they are regardless, because I put a lot of thought and heart into them. Someone disagreeing with them at face value isn’t going to make me up and throw all that work in the trash just like that.

If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?

     That’s okay. There are plenty of different ways to interpret a character. People are allowed to like and dislike whatever portrayal they so choose, so long as they’re not bashing anyone outright. I would much prefer that be something that’s kept to oneself, however. It’s very easy to simply ignore something you don’t agree with, and it’s just as easy to be kind about things when expressing your own thoughts in comparison with theirs. Plus, there’s always making your own blog and writing whoever however you please! Someone out there is bound to enjoy whatever portrayal you prefer. ♥

If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?

     Not personal, certainly, unless it was somehow directed at me personally. It’s very understandable. There’s a lot of potential present for actual progressing development, but on the surface Pica is very dislike-able. It’s very clear his purpose was to act as a stepping stone for another major character’s development and there wasn’t much left beyond that. Of course it’s always a sad thing being hopelessly attached to a character like that but as an avid lover of what are often viewed as very minor, niche characters, it’s something I’m very much used to. Perhaps not intense hate in every case, per se, but underappreciated. It just so happens that Pica is... not exactly a good person, putting it kindly. But that’s just another reason I love him so much as a character.

     Sure! Though chances are I’ve probably already noticed at that point and have been embarrassed about it/fixed it. I’ve probably made many over the years and also not realized it. Most of the time it’s something minor anyway, and a lot of people just naturally read it as it’s supposed to be read. So there’s no trouble!

Do you think you are easy going as a mun?

     I’d certainly like to think so! I tend to be very patient and accommodating. I wholeheartedly stand beside the idea that RPing is meant to be fun and enjoyable and not something that causes more stress. People should take their time with things and set their own pace. Being comfortable is part of what makes RP the wonderful hobby that it is. Really that applies to any hobby, but there are many little things that can turn someone away from doing something they love at any given time. There’s nothing that would hurt me more than unintentionally making something someone enjoys a chore for them. I try my best to make sure everyone knows that I’m really just a chill little bun having a good time doting on characters I love. Pica might not be cordial, but I certainly try to be!

How strictly do you follow canon?  — there isnt much canon to go off of i think? the album barely even states if ziggy is an alien and b*wie himself got really wishy washy about it (sometimes saying z is a human who was contacted by aliens, he was an alien himself, etc). i dont think we know anything about him besides what he looks like (red hair / weird eyes / pale / “well hung” lmao) and he has a band called the spiders from mars, he plays the guitar left handed, he’s bisexual + androgynous, and he’s charming and popular with the teens but inevitably is a victim of his own ego. and he dies.  that too.  but that’s literally it! we know Nothing else about him.  so i filled in all the gaps because my brain has worms.  theres a little bit of the story that verges on fantasy (that he’s some sort of messiah messenger for “the infinites,” whatever the fuck THAT means, david) so i nix that because i prefer hard scifi.  and theres one BIG part that i just ... deleted out of his canon, in that the world is ending in 5 years in his timeline, and he’s like ... aware of this ?  but that’s dumb and confusing.  i legit dont care anymore. my OC now.

Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  im so embarrassed i know i could be genuine and actually try but i have brain blockajjolajlakala33lak33klak333ak3jka3akjj323j3 i guess it’s like ... ziggy is truly the ultimate expression OF humanity because he reveals everything both wrong and right about the human condition, he literally embodies the best of humanity and the worst at the same time, he’s a really interesting critique on the idea of genuineness/earnestness vs commercalism in art, the perils of fame, and also how humans are so inherently corrupting?  a lot of thematic stuff i like exploring is like what is innate to humans vs what is learned behavior, what are things that humans do naturally that ziggy mimics out of his desire to be like us?  i think he has a really good story arc -- he went from being a literal nameless CLONE in a society full of pragmatic forward thinking science-oriented people to a sell out rockstar celebrity in a society of people that value individualism and self expression and art, but in the process completely lost his mind and himself and gave into the worst that humanity has to offer like rampant selfishness, drug abuse, self destructive tendencies, etc. characters changing is always interesting and ziggy truly changes for the worse -- but he is never just black and white, he was never good and then suddenly evil, he just was always the same person putting on different facades and trying to be himself by constructing an identity that maybe was who he wanted to be versus who he actually is.  i dont know what im talking about. hes just an alien trying to be too hard to be human in all the wrong ways.   i just like how “gray” ziggy is. he isnt good or bad, he can be very nice and he can be very mean, he’s overtly showboating confident but at the same time deeply afflicted with self-consciousness (why tf else would anyone be So obsessed with how they present themselves?).  hes an icon of individualism but also commercialism.  he’s freakishly alien but is almost more human than humans themselves.  he struggles as lot in his head -- which makes for interesting writing, i guess !!  Im so emabrrased im not going to go back and read what i wrote so if i typoed dont look at me

Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  —  i think ziggy comes across as really mean and nothing else.  his horrible bitchy rudeness comes across as hee hee hoo hoo sassy isnt he a rascal when it’s supposed to be more like ... he’s so far gone into the celebrity delusion he’s conflated aggressive rudeness with charmingness because no one told him otherwise and everyone worships him to the point where he’s just given into the delusion that he can do no wrong.  i think theres the general simplification problem that happens with a lot of fictional characters, it’s easy to see him as just a whacky sassy glittery quirky rockstar when i guess it avoids the inherent tragedy of like ... everything else about him. his totally fake and false sense of identity built up from superficial things like fame and labels and stardom.  maybe my version of ziggy is just too weirdly depressing and sad when i know his original iteration wasn’t quite so ... grim.  im not very sure tbh.  

What inspired you to rp your muse?  —  hmmm ... a lot of things! i just really got into b*wie stuff in early 2019, i’ve ALWAYS loved aliens and sci-fi, and i was really shocked that db sets up such great visual storytelling potential but does it through music.  i just really liked ziggys “story” and i like any chance to think about aliens so i just got invested into piecing together a little backstory for him using, like, the cumulative knowledge of literally every other piece of science fiction ive ever consumed in my life.  this was summer 2019 when i was making initial pitches for my thesis film, and so i just randomly decided to pitch “animated version of ziggy stardust” as one of the potential ideas.  shockingly everyone liked it a lot and so did my professor who thought it was really cool, and then i just ended up sticking with the character and working on him for an entire year.  ziggy became my hobby but also my homework.  he was such a fun character because everything about him was interesting to me and i had just enough source material to have a starting point but so much room to take him in any direction i wanted to.

What keeps your inspiration going?  —  honestly, yooooou guyssssss. i have some really amazing fwends that ive met thru here .... and some of our dumb stupid stories have literally become NOVEL length. it just self generates inspiration because you realize the limitless amount of stories you could tell with this one single character when your character enters his story or he enters their story and etc. etc.  ive drawn endless amounts of comics and stuff for him ... ziggy is just so endlessly interesting ...   cringe be cringed bro but recently (i know this sounds dumb bear with me or die.) ive kind of realized a lot of how i rp z comes as some metaphor for the experience of being an asian immigrant/being asian in the US -- his home “culture” is a lot stricter than the rampant selfish individualism of the usa (he only lives in the uk and usa, so he thinks the whole planet is like this), he’s dissuaded from standing out from his community and his selfishness becomes a community burden rather than a personal flaw, and when he does come to earth, he goes through such awful culture shock, literally nothing makes sense to him and everything is Different.  and while some things are different in a Nice way, something things are different in an Awful way, and he’s given the option between losing his true personal identity as an atominan and giving it up to be a human.  the allure of being a human is a little too much but losing yourself like this is traumatic, in a way.  obvs like ... a little silly and definitely not something that i actively intended to put into his story arc, its just something that fell into place cuz i guess i worked so closely with my own personal experiences and feelings of “alienation” (pun intended) to try to understand how he would feel being a literal alien an shid. its cathartic to write about him. but he also has a lot of my own personal interests just thrown in -- 70s fashion, scifi, science, tryhard implications about human nature, art history, whatever dumb nonsense i get into

Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?  —  definitely!  like i said ... my version of ziggy ended up being the protag of my thesis film and for 1 yr straight his characterization, backstory, design, and even how i wanted to animate his fucking movements (ziggy stardust timing charts.) were beaten to death in a classroom environment, torn apart and rebuilt into something better.  had i stayed with what i originally wanted to go with, ziggy would be so different than how i write him 2day. amazingly my pre production professor is a literal two time emmy award winning storyboard artist and animator so he definitely helped me design him (my version of ziggy is meant for ... a cartoon, obviously, not real life) and give him a better backstory?  and my post production professor is a retired disney animator who worked on hercules and a bunch of old disney channel shows?  had i gone wah wah wah i dont want to hear ur critiques i wouldnt have made him better.  if you ever think ziggy seems inconsistent or poorly written ... tell me !! i literally major in ... animation. cartoons. entertainment.  my job is to entertain you. if you are not entertained, there is a problem.  ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED ????

If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?  —  sure! i dont know why that would happen, though, because i mean ... he’s an OC. but i gues someone could be like “i feel like this is incongruous to things you’ve previously established in his character” or somethin

If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?  —  i feel like a lot of b*wie stans would find my version of ziggy weird but i mean thats fine!  i guess my goal is to have a well written character, not necessarily an accurate version of ziggy

HOW STRICTLY DO YOU FOLLOW CANON?   —  (Because I started to RP Minato when there’s wasn’t much games where he didn’t have his personality shown yet(2015)   I based him off more from the Manga’s interpretation of him, But now canon wise in terms of Personality, I still tend to use mostly his Manga personality, but now I’ve added a few small tidd-bits of how he is in the movie and how he is depicted in both PQ’s as well as Dancing In Moonlight.)

Minato is a food loving and very random dork who tends to be quiet and stoic 88% of the time, but he’s very kind, he always puts his friends before himself, he tries his very best to be the best leader he can possibly be and he is an all around easy person to get along with, just expect him to zone out here and there, to sometimes be very weird, VERY random. And expect him to randomly start snacking a lot x3 )

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO RP YOUR MUSE?   —  (I guess it was how I saw him when   I read the Manga. I played P3 FES first, then after beating it, I wanted to read the manga as soon as I found out about it. I also think it was the fact he dies and seeing how his friends grew up without him, it made me really want to see what it would be like if he survived, I guess I felt his death at the end of the game was just a real shame, I suppose I thought he would have been a great character to bring back in future Persona games, I understand the reason for his death and I have nothing against it. It was just that thought I had of “Man Minato could have been so much more if he survived” that drove me to pick him up )

WHAT KEEPS YOUR INSPIRATION GOING?   —  (Well, I’ve been in the Persona fandom for 5 years now. Before when I came back, I wasn’t getting many rp’s. But ever since I came back and found an active Fuuka(MinaFuu is a ship I rarely got to rp) so that started it back up, and then it was seeing all these familiar faces(Or blogs in this case xD) come back, my motivation has been through the roof. So I guess the revival of the fandom and the wonderful people of the Persona community has fueled my fire and it keeps on burning for more!)

When you notice the plotting is rather one-sided, what do you do?:  Oh I’ll just straight up ask if they want to continue the thread or start a new one! I mean, I get it, you can lose interest or otherwise just not feel it anymore and that’s fine! If you’re not interested in that particular thread, then no worries, we can always start more! If you’re just being one-sided in general, however?? I’m not gonna be interested at all and I’ll likely tell you as such. 

How do you usually plot with others, do you give input or leave most work towards your partner?:  Normally it’ll just happen? I’ll do my “Hey what if they ___” thing and then a rapid bombardment of inquiries and excitement later, there is a thread. It’s usually mutual, the involvement of creating this plot, but sometimes it’s just me being excited and them being excited and then suddenly BAM THERE BE THREADS. S’all good over here! 

When a partner drops the thread, do you wish to know?:   YES / NO / DEPENDS. - And why?: I mean?? I’d like to know, yes! But I get that sometimes it’s incredibly anxiety ridden trying to tell someone that you’ve lost interest in a thread. It’s alright if you don’t tell me, but if you can muster up the courage to do so I’d appreciate it! I’m not gonna be upset at you for losing interest/muse in a thread! If I cared deeply about the story, I might poke at you and then you can tell me?? Either way it’s fine and tbh, I don’t mind. However, please let it be known that you can take forever on a reply as well so don’t worry about just hoarding a draft too! Tbh, I had someone reply to a thread literally a year later and I was still excited for it!  - What should your partner do when dropping a thread?:  Just shoot me an IM or hell, make a list of threads you’re dropping and tag me in it??? Which ever! Or don’t even tell me at all, whatever works for you sugar! 

What could possibly lead you to drop a thread?:  Hmn, being overwhelmed-- I tend to accumulate a lot of drafts and 90% of them are long so sometimes I’ll drop a thread or two to help myself get by. Also lack of muse/interest is a factor. I won’t drop a thread purely out of being overwhelmed unless I just can’t muster up the muse to respond to it.  - Will you tell your partner?:   YES / NO / DEPENDS. Sometimes I get overwhelmed myself and I’ll drop a thread, forget to tell my partner, etc. Other times I’ll tell them before I even delete the draft! 

Is communication in the rpc important to you?   YES / NO. - And why?:  Yes and no~ Yes primarily! I get that others can take a minute to muster up the courage to talk to others and would just prefer to keep things to a few sentences at first! However, I can and will ambush you with conversation and interest nonetheless. Because communication is important. If you’ve got something you wanna say to me, say it! I’m here for it!  - Are you okay with absolute honesty, even if it may means hearing something negative about you and/or portrayal?:  Yup! If you’ve got an issue or something that might come across as criticism to say, say it! Civil discussion is absolutely wanted here and I would like to work out any issues you may have with me or my portrayal.  - Do you think you can handle such situation in a mature way?  YES / NO.

Why do you rp again, is there a goal?:  To write and have fun! To explore in depth the characters I create or take on! I mean, c’mon, lbr here-- my gremlin ass muses require some more in depth speculation and investigation into their characters! I love the creativity, the world building, the constant drive to do better and to make others feel something from words alone. The capability to rend emotion from another living being simply from reading and reacting to something I created is amazing and I want to make others cry, laugh, smile and think. I want to create. 

Wishlist, be it plots or scenarios:  Oh man, there’s an endless supply of things I’d like to do! I want to explore the depths of my muses’ histories more?? Like Shiro, I want to write out the things he must’ve seen, felt, experienced. How Nelliel was when she was alive, how Shiro fared in the Arena when he wasn’t fighting, Seb’s life torn between the various throws of data and reality-- there’s so much! And ALL THE AU’s!!!! All of them!!!  

Themes I won’t ever rp / explore: Sure, I work with a lot of darker themes like torture, gore, etc-- but I will not write Rape, sexual abuse, nor will I write child loss.  

What Type of Starters do you prefer / dislike, can’t work with?: I can work with most starters! However, if I’m randomly given a starter that I can’t work with for the muse selected, I’ll inform the person who wrote it! I appreciate the effort given but don’t expect me to be able to reply to every random starter given! Sometimes, they don’t even show up in my tag. 

What type of characters catch your interest the most?:  Okay, I’m a sucker for the underdogs, aggressive folks and the villains. I’m not even going to try and lie and say I don’t immediately look at the Aizens and Kenpachis and go ah yes, those fucking gremlins, give me ten. I also love the background characters? The side characters in a show that seem so unimportant but have a crucial role? I love characters that have such an obscure involvement that you have to stop and ask why and how their involvement was crucial. I also love the soft beans? The ones who are so hyped with positivity and gleaming interest that they just can’t be ignored?? But then turn around and whoop some poor sap’s ass with that sparkle sparkle smile. Also love the upstanding moral types that also acknowledge that some things can’t be avoided and that morality is a grey area dependent on the perceptions of the individuals themselves. 

What type of characters catch your interest the least?:  Hmn-- I guess the kind that don’t seem to have much substance to them? The ones that are just uncharacteristically too kind. Yes, I love the overwhelmingly positive types but?? Also?? The ones that are too kind and without flaw just?? Don’t strike me as interesting. Also the ones that are just cruel for some obscure reason just to give them a reason to be villains. I mean I understand but also?? Villains don’t have to have a reason?? They can be cruel just to be cruel. Idk that’s always just been a thing with me.

What are your strong aspects as rp partner?:  I guess that I’m fairly laid back? I don’t mind if you take 10 years to reply, I’m going to get excited if you message me with some random idea, I’m not going to be bothered by any ideas you suggest?? I can also sometimes give u doodles?? I don’t have time to doodle a lot but sometimes, once in a blue moon, you’ll get a random offering of doodled booty for ur blessing. Also gonna hit you up with random HCs, ideas, threads, etc?? Always?? Idk, I’m not too good at thinking about positive aspects of myself lmfao. 

What are your weak aspects as rp partner?: Hnnn, I’m too laid back at times. I take too long to reply and I’m busy af IRL. I’m often goaded into being irritated by some asshole or another so I can come off aggro af too when I don’t mean to be. Sometimes I can get overwhelmed and disappear for a week, other times I can end up overwhelming someone else by being too excited? I tend to watch how much I do and say because I feel like I might come off as smothering and am too used to being shut down and told to shut up so I just don’t?? Do anything sometimes. I’m also not very good at initiating contact sometimes so I tend to go days and weeks without speaking to others. 

Do you rp smut?:  YES / NO. Do you prefer to go into detail?:  YES / NO / DEPENDS. Are you okay with black curtain?:  YES / NO. - When do you rp smut? More out of fun or character development?:  Usually only if it’s developmental for the characters involved. Sometimes it’s just fun to do! I mean if I don’t wanna rp somethin’ I’ll say so. 

Are ships important to you?:   YES / NO. Would you say your blog is ship-focused?:   YES / NO. Do you use read more?:  YES / NO / SOMETIMES. Are you: Multi-Ship / Single-Ship / Dual-Ship  —  Multiverse / Singleverse. - What do you love to explore the most in your ships?:  The relationship, the depth of two muses who can be wildly different or even similar. The multifaceted involvement of others to that relationship, the angst, the arguments, the sad moments along with all the happy things and how hard one might try while the other is cold-- etc. I don’t just want happy dates and sunshine, that’s not how relationships work after all!   - What is your smut tag?: Kettledrums

Are you okay with pre-established relationships?: YES / NO. - And what kind of ones?: I like a lot of pre-established relationships! However, I can be a tad wary of child muses? Aka: The ones who are children of one of my muses. Reason being, sometimes even I don’t know how they’d raise a child so the muse in question would be off putting to me because it’s out of my realm. Beyond that, I’m down for just about everything! 

► SECTION ABOUT YOUR MUSE.

- What could possibly make your Muse interesting towards others, why should they rp with this particular character of yours now, what possible plots do they offer?:  Since I have so many damn muses, I’mma just go with Shiro for all of this-- I suppose what they could find interesting is his very multifaceted dynamic as a soldier, human, technical non-human (Zombae), war worn, space exploring person. He can be rainbows and sunshine but also can suddenly become incredibly aggressive and cold. He’s not one or the other, he’s all and everything that he’s learned and encompassed while still remaining fragile and human in the end. Writing with him can be inspiring and can be soul wrenching, depending on the thread. As for plots, dude your character could be in space in one thread if the otherwise couldn’t be. There’s so many ways to go about writing with him?? He’s such an amazing character and the plots he can be instilled in are almost limitless with just his main verse. 

- With what type of Muses do you usually struggle to rp with?:   Hmn-- I guess the main one I have issues injecting him into place with would be the ones who are strictly non-tech oriented?? I mean, I can still have him there but getting him to fit is just?? Really difficult. Also with people who RP villains of his fandom and expect him not to be volatile. I’m sorry, but if you’re writing a S.endak or a Z.arkon-- you’re not going to get roses and butterflies with Shiro, plain and simple. If that’s something you can’t accept then don’t approach him with those muses.  - With what type of Muses do they usually work well with?:  He works really well with most anyone! So long as one goes into it knowing he can be hostile with soldiers, Galra, etc; then he can be used no matter what. He’s one of my most capable muses that doesn’t have much of an issue when it comes to responding. 

- What interests your Muse(s) in general:  Space, mechanics, biomedical engineering, people, freedom, fighting for a cause, flowers, his mother, violin, cats, sparring, getting stronger, constellations, nebulae, engineering, literature, alien languages, cooking. - What do they desire, is their goal?:  The safety of others, the freedom of others, the ability to choose, hope-- he wants to make sure those he cares for and all others are free and safe from the Galra take over.  - What catches their interest first when meeting someone new?:  How they look at him. If they show signs of pity, of fear, he tends to walk away from any possible meeting with them. Otherwise, their appearance is what first catches his eye. How they dress, how they respond to him, how they talk and if he can make them crack a smile with an awkward joke.  - What do they value in a person?:  Hope, Strength, Loyalty, Purpose, Honesty, Patience. - What themes do they like talking about?:  Shiro’s more of a listener than a talker, but honestly he’ll talk about anything of interest and question anyone’s as well to get them to talk about it. It’s what makes conversation with him easygoing most of the time.  - Which themes bore them?:  Himself. He’ll try to avert any conversation about himself if it’s too personal or too close to something. It’s not so much that it bores him but that type of talk is reserved for those insanely close to him. Also talk of command bores the FUCK out of him. He’s never been one to really like rank. 

- Did they ever went through something traumatic?:  So. Fucking. Much. Between being a prisoner of a war he was never involved with to being told he was a leader of a rebellion for said war, being a prisoner in the Arena and forced to fight and kill others, being held down and sedated as he tried to warn the others, DYING-- this boy has been thru too much.  - What could possibly trigger them?:  Certain noises, textures, Galra, medical equipment, certain lighting.  - What could set them off, enrage them?:  Galra, someone protecting him. - What could lead to an instant kill?:  Any bloodlust towards him or those he cares for. Most of the time, he has this under control and tries to be merciful, give them a chance; but sometimes, especially during an episode; there’s no stopping him from gunning for someone’s throat if they had any intent to harm another or himself. 

- Is there someone /-thing they hate?:  Z.arkon, S.endak, L.otor, H.aggar, Druids, himself a lot of the time. - Is there someone /-thing they love?:   The paladins, space fam in general, his mother, his friends, people in general. 

Is your Muse easy to approach?: YES / NO. - Best ways to approach them?:  Just approach him? Honestly, Shiro’s one of the easiest persons to converse with and get near. That doesn’t mean his guard is dropped, but he’s very easy going a lot of the time outside of battle. So long as you have a reason to approach him (even simpler ones like: his appearance, his arm, etc) then you’re set.  - Where are they usually to find?:  Oof, honestly? Anywhere. Space, Earth, other places-- he’s constantly on the move. If you want a set place, just say somewhere on Earth and I can work with that. 

Something you may still want to point out about your muse?:  Shiro is certainly easy to get along with, but he is not without flaw or issue. He has a plethora of issues even after the fall of the Galra Empire. He’s not without his scars, physical and otherwise. Approaching him is easy but getting close to him is not. Don’t expect him to be an open book. Just because he can talk about war, battle, fighting with a straight face doesn’t mean he wasn’t effected by it. He has suffered greatly and it will show the closer you get to him.

My muse is:   canon / oc / au / canon-divergent (the mere existence of a post-canon verse is diverging from canon) / fandomless / complicated

Is your character popular in the fandom? YES / NO. He started off as a tertiary character in the mage origin/Broken Circle quest in DAO, then ended up becoming something of a staple tertiary/secondary character in DA2 and DAI.

Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK. I’m not entirely sure how people feel about DAO Cullen’s appearance but DA2 and onwards he got himself a glow-up and an unwitting thirst trap reputation. What made ramen boy appealing in DAO for some is that if you played a female mage Warden, he’s “the one who got away”... because he literally booked it down the corridor if you got too flirty.

Is your character considered strong in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK. Perhaps? If you take a stroll through his tag, despite being a Templar, he’s not often portrayed as someone who’s fighting (*winkwonk*).

Are they underrated? YES / NO / IDK. Some in the fandom might even call him overrated, depending on who you ask. 

Were they relevant for the main story?  YES / NO. In DAO he begs for you to kill all the remaining mages in the Circle Tower, and you can accept or decline to do so. In DA2 he solicits a few quests and eventually sides with you to defeat Meredith. In DAI he’s the Commander of the Inquisition and a vital part of the war council. Overall, he’s there to provide a pro-Templar outlook for the character. 

Were they relevant for the main character? YES / NO / THEY’RE THE PROTAG. He’s met every game protagonist thus far and had some level of personal/professional relationship with them. 

Are they widely known in their world? YES / NO. In DAO he was a newly minted Templar. DA2 he was elevated to Knight-Captain very quickly which got his name floating around Kirkwall, and of course by DAI he’s the head of the Inquisition’s forces so he’s even more well-known throughout (at the least) Ferelden and Orlais.

How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL. Both. The common people and fellow Templars would look up to him, whereas mages and pro-mage sympathisers would absolutely have an issue with the role he’s played over the years.

How strictly do you follow canon? — As closely as I can, without lingering too deeply into the “problematic views” part of his character. I don’t seek to erase them or ignore them, and I don’t have too much issue writing them for the sake of being genuine, but I also don’t want to write him as if he’s some mustache-twirling villain because he is not. 

SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  Since he was 18 years old, Cullen has suffered and struggled through adversity after adversity (torture, sexual assault, brainwashing, night terrors, drug abuse, and a healthy spoonful of “all my friends are dead”), and yet maintained a soft heart underneath the steel wall of being a warrior. His goal since childhood has been to serve and to protect, and his self-awareness, loyalty, intelligence, and drive to make himself a better and more caring man is what sets him apart from others of his ilk who in his shoes would’ve broken a long, long time ago.

Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  — He’s a man who’s allowed atrocities to occur by not standing up to speak against them, has perpetuated the cycle of mage abuse by the hands of others, can be callous, closed-minded, and aggressive, and has a strong prejudice against mages that wasn’t properly resolved in his “redemption” arc – nor was his lyrium addiction/withdrawal.

What inspired you to rp your muse?  —  He’s the type of muse I gravitate towards: bookish, devoted, protective, a softy under all the stone, endearingly awkward. More than that, though, his story intrigues me. Cullen has gone through a lot (he’s either the luckiest or unluckiest person) and watching his trajectory throughout the series has been really interesting. I’d like to provide him proper growth and development that he wasn’t entirely given in the games, or that wasn’t explicitly shown.

What keeps your inspiration going?  —  My amazing roleplay partners with all the good work they put into their characters and the love they have shown me and my character so far. I love you guys <3  (<-- keeping that answer bc agreed)

Do you think you give your character justice?  YES / NO / I SINCERELY HOPE I DO? i have my doubts sometimes, but i think i do ok. Still, I would love to have more feedback to see how i can improve even more. (<-- keeping bc agreed)

Do you frequently write headcanons?  YES / NO / SORT OF I write quite a few of them that never see the light of day, and I constantly and randomly sling little thoughts at my rp partners as they come to me. As for this blog itself, I’d prefer to have my headcanons evident in my writing, so I don’t post things about Cullen’s favourite colour or what he likes to eat for supper every night (and that’s absolutely no shade to people who do post headcanons that way; I honestly wish I operated the same way lol)

Do you sometimes write drabbles? YES / NO. There’s a few on the blog already, hidden in plain sight.

Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day? YES / NO. Even when I don’t want to think about him, I end up thinking about him. But I like thinking about him, so...

Are you confident in your portrayal? YES / NO / SORT OF? I’m still fairly new to the fandom and I’ve been learning a lot about Cullen, what people think about Cullen, what Cullen thinks about himself and others, etc. etc. Plus there are other, more well-established blogs for him out there. I’m honestly surprised I got more than 20 followers tbh.

Are you confident in your writing?  YES / NO / SOMETIMES. I'm my own worst enemy with this one. Like, I know I’m alright but I’m not good enough for myself.

Are you a sensitive person?  YES / NO / SORTA. Some things do bother me a lot more than others, but any annoyance I feel is pretty quickly done after I vent about it. Then I typically forget after a while.

Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?  —  I’m always open to constructive criticism that both highlights what I’m doing well and considerately points out what I could improve upon. 

Do you like questions, which help you explore your character?  — Of course! I enjoy delving into his character and wondering the “what ifs” of various situations that may or may not occur. And if we can write it together in a thread? Even better!

If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?  —  No one owes me an explanation as to why they have an opinion, but yes I would like to know why. Maybe I misinterpreted something, or overlooked something. Maybe I made a mistake. I’m human. It happens.

If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?  —  same as the above.

If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  — It only bothers me if it’s directed at me. I fully acknowledge that Cullen is controversial and has a very contentious past (or present) that rubs a good amount of people the wrong way. You don’t have to like him, but I do take some issue with people purposely twisting facts to make him out to be worse than what he actually is. I’ve considered writing a post about it truthfully but I don’t want that unbridled hatred to come to my doorstep if/when someone who’s not a fan of him reads it. It’s not worth it. Might do it anyway though. I don’t know.

Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  — Please do. Politely. English is my native language but I’m still out here making mistakes. smh @ myself

Do you think you are easy going as a mun?   —  I’d like to think so, yes. I have a very high tolerance level for a lot of things, don’t get easily triggered, and I’m always willing to chat about character stuff or irl stuff or... anything, basically.

Obviously loves RPGs! Anything with a good story line really! Or has medieval fantasy aesthetic!

Skyrim, Diablo, Undertale, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Fallout, Red Dead Redemption, Undertales, Dragon Age, God of War Dark Souls, Assassins Creed, Earthbound, etc.

Played West of Loathing just so he could rip on it but actually ended up loving it and spending way to many hours playing. Then he found out there was a game called Kingdom of Loathing by the same creators and went down that rabbit hole as well.

He was iffy about getting into JRPGs but then Virgil convinced him to play Persona 5 and he absolutely fell in love with the music!

All the music in his phone is either from musicals or Video games!

Also really likes choose your own adventure games like Detroit: Become Human, Life is Strange, and Telltale Games

So much video game merch! Usually figurines because he likes to make little shelves and display cases for them.

He also really likes multiplayer games because he’s a social butterfly and likes to play with his squad.

Sucks at first person shooter games but still willingly plays Fortnight or Call of Duty or Left for Dead with his friends because he doesn’t want to be a drag and complain. But also they sometimes die in game in the most hilarious ways and it just leaves everybody wheezing.

Every time the Walking Dead comes out he knows he’ll end up crying by the end of it. He and the squad make and event out of it.

Japanese horror games are usually his favorite because they deal more with the psychological aspects of horror instead of the jump scares

So, yes, he’s also a fan of Corps Party and Fatal Frame

Also really good at first person shooters because he has a really steady hand (you usually have to when playing horror games least you want to restart the level) and it pisses Roman off to no end every time Virgil randomly headshots him.

Usually likes to by merch in the form of posters, t-shirts, or beanies. He only buys figurines if it’s a game he really, really likes.

At first didn’t know why people kept bugging him to play Doki Doki Literature Club but then he finally caved and...oh...that’s why.

My boy loves puzzle and strategy games yo!

Legend of Zelda, Portal, Tetris, Unravel, World of Goo, Inside, Limbo, Pokemon, Shadow of the Colossus, StarCraft, Command and Conquer, Age of Empire, Heart of Iron, World of Warcraft, etc.

He likes Overwatch but doesn’t like playing with people online so he usual solos or asks the others to play. But that too usually ends in chaos.

Hates rage games because he gets frustrated easily and has broken at least four keyboards and two controllers

He still plays them anyways because he can beat it damn it! Just give him a minute!

Enjoys the God of War series despite all the mythological inaccuracies

He plays a lot of Minecraft to relax or destress and has build beautiful works of architecture and sometimes entire cities.

He thought it was stupid and childish and was embarrassed about it for a long time until the squad came over to his house one day uninvited and caught him playing. He was getting ready for them to make fun of him but they instead gushed about how AMAZING everything looked and how TALENTED he was for building all himself.

Logan ends up showing them how to play afterwards and they work together to make weird sculptures and complex tunnels underground.

He likes practical merch like backpacks, coffee mugs, pencil holders, notebooks, ect. as well as a few t-shirts and novelty ties.

Silly dating sims, farming games, and any cute game really! Plus a few side scroller games!

Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, Slime Rancher, The Sims, Dream Daddy, Animal Crossing, Kirby, Monster Prom, Hatoful Boyfriend, Scribblenauts, Night In The Woods, Ni Nu Kuni, etc.

Big Nintendo fan!

He made the mistake of playing Doki Doki Literature Club without reading the warning tags and regrets it immensely...still a good game though.

He did the same thing with Huni Pop but that one made him laugh more then anything and he kind of got addicted to it. Then he found out there was a sequel called HuniCam so he went down that rabbit hole too.

He likes a lot of phone app games too like Cut the Rope, Neko Atsume, and Candy Crush.

Loves trashy dating app games, he thinks they’re so funny and cheesy

He was addicted to Mystic Messenger for a long while

A lot of first person shooter and combat games!

Doom Series, Super Smash Bros, Mortal Combat, Halo, Fortnight, Grand Theft Auto, Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Half-Life, Team Fortress, Destiny, Wolfenstein, Bio Shock, Splatoon, PUBg etc.

Patton was the one that introduced him to Splatoon and he won’t admit that it’s actually super fun.

Doesn’t mind story driven games and RPGs but he really just wants something he can zone out to and relax

He likes to troll people online, mainly assholes picking on little kids who just want to play.

He once teamed up with a group of kids on Call of Duty solely for the purpose of collectively kicking the asses of this groups of so called “real gamers” that were being jerks.

Has memorized all the combos! He doesn’t have time to sit and look up a cool finishing move, he needs it now!

Always mains the weakest/most useless character in fighting games and still manages to kick everyone’s ass.

Absolutely fell in love with Shovel Knight when it came out!

Remy got him into all the indie pixel games: Towerfall, Terraria, Owlboy, Hotline Miami, Papers Please, Celeste, One Shot, etc.

Duncan was the one that introduced him to Cuphead and the usually play it together and see how far each of them can go without dying.

The game is difficult but the art is still so breathtaking!

Bet Virgil showed him Alice: Madness Returns and Doki Doki Literature Club (after he’s played it of course)

He always gets everybody hooked on one game or another

He convinced everyone to play Undertales so for like a month they all went through a HUGE Undertales faze.

Was the actual, ACTUAL one that showed Duncan Cuphead because he knew the dork would be reminded of Emile because of the animation and would want to show it to him and play multiplayer (*cough* subtle matchmaker *cough*)

(Do not be fooled, he is a pinning boy himself)

Is up to date in all the gossip of the latest games and consuls, indie or mainstream! He’s in the know, know and if you need to know something chances are Remy probably knows it.

Weeds out through all the indie horror games for Virgil and recommends what he thinks are the best ones.

Same thing with Logan and his puzzle games, he’s usually is able to find very strange ones and Logan seems to likes those best.

Obviously has a lot of merch in coffee mug and thermal form as well as a few key chains.

Occasionally streams on Twitch with Duncan and Emile (sometimes inviting the main squad too), they’re commentary is usual hilarious.

he’s been in a few of your classes throughout the years and you’re both on friendly terms- sometimes you’ll sit next to each other if there’s no one else and you can strike up a convo readily, you’ll say hi to each other in the hallways... but;;

still not really friends in the terms of hanging out and all

you’re not that close with his group of people in general

which is why it surprises you when one day as you’re going home from school ten pops up next to you “hey, (y/n!)”

it takes you five hot seconds to remember who he is- yes, right, he was the teaching assistant for your history class once, that friendly but kind of weird guy,,, he graduated but came back to help out

“that’s me! hi-?” you squeak out, because he basically jumpscared you

you raise your eyebrow at him “...yes?”

“she’s joining our dance team too, and she recommended that we try and recruit you!”

“...” you’re not against this idea, really, but you’re a ballerina, and don’t know that much about more modern styles of dancing,,,

“well... me, jisung, jeno, jaemin, taeyong, sooyoung, and heejin, so far! and you, if you say yes. i wanted to ask a few other alumni, but they’re too busy... oh well, what do you say?”

oh thank god heejin’s there, she’s your best friend

that makes it so much better- not like you have issues with anyone else, but still...

“okay, yes, i’ll join... if it’s not awkward or burdensome for you guys.”

ten’s face lights up “great! can i have your number to add you to the group chat?”

you offer him your phone “have you asked anyone else?”

“well...” ten shrugs “yeah, but they don’t have time. so it’s just the eight of us... we figure a smaller number will be easier to handle, anyway, so that’s fine. unless you want to ask your friends?”

“um...” that’s actually tempting, some of your friends are excellent dancers “well, hyejoo and yerim are great dancers but they’re hella busy... yeah never mind.”

hyejoo’s been cast as the lead role in the school drama and has hours and hours of rehearsal, while yerim’s schedule is packed with a bazillion clubs, teams and classes

ten just laughs as he hands back your phone “alright, that’s fine! first meeting is this friday, i’ll see you there”

you nod as he waves goodbye and runs off

your phone buzzes with an excited text from heejin and you smile as you read over it

(y/n)!!! you joined the group!! omg i didn’t know you even knew about it

you shoot back a text with i didn’t, sooyoung told ten i’m a ballerina

heejin responds almost instantly,,, and no one told me they were planning to recruit you? ugh why i would have given you so much praise 

you chuckle to yourself. shut up i’m not that good, you’re the amazing one

um... girlie, you are that good! and we’ll both be awesome together, okay?

then a notif lights up your phone from.... ‘taeten’s cult’???

oh,, must be the dance team chat, you realize- a message from taeyong

okay, everyone! we have a new member, it’s (y/n)

a text from heejin pops up in the chat ‘she’s an amazing ballerina!’

you sigh and retort, i’m not that good

heejin’s typing bubble shows up, but before she can shut you down, a text from jaemin pops up ‘oh, hey! welcome~’

over the next hour more welcoming texts are sent and,,, hey

you’re kind of looking forward to friday

but first: auditions for the big ballet production at your studio are tomorrow and you need to get in some last-minute practice today

you are a big ball of nerves because you’re aiming for the lead role and you have some serious competition

tomorrow’s audition comes and goes, and thankfully you seem to have impressed the director

so you just do what you usually do with auditions and don’t think about it

on friday you and heejin arrive at a practice room in taeyong and ten’s apartment complex

you more or less know everyone except taeyong, so you’re not that nervous

the two of you are the last to enter

everyone’s sitting in a circle on the floor

when ten spots you two, his eyes light up “oh, hey! they’re here!”

taeyong claps his hands “okay, kids, since everyone’s arrived-”

“yes mom,” drawls jeno

jisung and jaemin snort as taeyong sighs

the eight of you go around in a circle and introduce yourselves- like your name, your grade year, and a bit about yourselves like hobbies, interests, things like that

“hey, we need to decide on a name, don’t we?” sooyoung pipes up

“yeah, we do” taeyong just shrugs “i’ll put a small form in the group chat and you guys can send in suggestions”

“i like taeten’s cult,” ten declares

“...yeah... no”

the conversation devolves into a brief debate over how politically correct the word cult is in different situations before taeyong gets it back on track

“okay, guys! ten is going to split us up into pairs”

ten stands “alright, so the girls know each other, and the guys know each other, but there’s not much closeness between us besides that. through the power of rng and technology...” he waves his phone around “i’m going to sort us into pairs with someone we’re not so close with! so we can have team bonding and stuff”

it takes a few minutes for his app to load and he spins it a few times before announcing “okay, the pairs are... drumroll, please...”

jaemin, jeno, taeyong and heejin happily oblige him while sooyoung just chuckles

jisung shoots you a look like these idiots, right

“jaemin and sooyoung, jeno and taeyong, me and heejin, and jisung and (y/n)!”

the eight of you shuffle around so you’re next to your partners instead

“so just...” taeyong shrugs “talk to each other, get to know each other, stuff like that!”

jisung’s the first to speak- a bit nervous-sounding, and having a bit of trouble with eye contact “i’m really glad you joined...” he smiles shyly at you “i didn’t get to see any videos of you dancing, but ten and sooyoung said you were super good, and i believe them, so...” 

“oh” you can’t help ducking your head and focusing on the floor for a second before glancing up again “thanks...! i’m- i’m really not that good, though. i don’t really know modern dance styles... not that i can’t do it, i can, but it’s not really my specialty? unlike you guys. you’re super good”

jisung shakes his head, a dusting of pink on his cheeks “oh, come on. we’re- we’re not all that good, and i’m sure you can learn”

you chuckle “well, i suppose. i’m looking forward to it”

the two of you spend a few more minutes talking quietly about nothing in particular- school, dancing, things like that

and then taeyong speaks up “guys... ten and i forgot to tell you something”

he sounds a bit guilty

then ten speaks up, not sounding guilty at all

“okay, guys! we forgot to tell you, but we’ve signed this team to perform for a big city festival that’s happening in a few months”

“unfortunately, some of the other planned performers had to back out, so we got stuck with a really long time slot- like...” taeyong sighs “ours is more than ten minutes long...”

“so we just need to perform for ten minutes?” inquires heejin “doesn’t sound that bad.”

ten continues cheerfully “that’s not all! we didn’t want to just have all eight of us perform for that long, that’s boring, so to spice it up, we promised that we’d have some duet performances!”

silence for a few moments as ten pauses dramatically before finishing “that’s right, everyone, the partner you’re with now will be the person you perform a duet stage with!”

oh

well

jisung’s a good partner, actually,,, the only problem that you can think of is that you’re not good enough to match him

you’re fine with this though

“and you selected these pairs by random generator?” jeno yelps

ten nods happily while taeyong rolls his eyes in the back “right! if anyone has problems with their partner, speak now or forever hold your peace!”

you glance over at jisung

he just shrugs at you, smiling lightly

“i’m totally fine,” sooyoung chirps, and everyone follows suit with confirming that they’re fine with this arrangement

“okay, cool” taeyong stands up “ten and i are still choreographing the full group performance, so we don’t actually have anything else to do this meeting. just... we’ll meet again next friday, and meanwhile, you guys start planning the performance with your partners, okay?”

“yes, mom!” jaemin calls out

and with that the meeting ends

jisung pulls you aside before you leave “do you want to meet up tomorrow to decide what song to perform our duet to?” 

“oh! yeah, okay. where do you want to meet?”

“i’ll... i’ll tell you,” jisung decides “i’ll send you the address later”

you nod “okay, that’s cool! see you tomorrow then”

jisung smiles at you and you wave goodbye before leaving with heejin

to be honest, you are a bit excited to perform a duet with jisung- you’re always happy to perform on stage, and duets are usually quite fun

and he’s a great dancer

you know he’ll do his best, and so will you- thankfully, you already know him, so it’s not like your partner is a literal stranger like taeyong or someone you don’t know as well, like ten

not that you know jisung that well, but the point stands

as you go home, a couple ideas for types of duets you’d like to do pop into your head, and you take mental notes of them

that night, jisung texts you an address to go to and you send him back a thanks! do you have any ideas so far?

you’re a bit confused because the address has no floor or apartment number, it’s just a street address

does jisung live in an actual house?

before you can ponder any longer jisung responds with a couple. you’re a ballerina, right? so maybe we could do something more traditional. or a fusion. i don’t know, anything’s possible

you smile down at your screen and text back, yeah! if we end up doing something more your genre, like modern stuff, that’s cool too! i’d like to try that as well.

five minutes later the dance team chat rings with a text from taeyong 

whoever just sent ‘cabbage ass’ to the name submission form, please stop, thanks

you snort to yourself before wondering if you should submit a name

huh,,, you’ll think about it, you don’t have any good ideas as of right now

before you go to bed you and heejin text each other back and forth for a good forty-five minutes, mostly about the dance team performance

she’s excited too

which is nice- having your bestie with you makes it more fun

the next day, you wake up late because it’s a weekend, finish your homework, eat lunch and head out to the address jisung gave you

when you arrive your jaw more or less drops

it’s a huge house

...more like a mansion ngl

but.

it’s huge, and obviously belongs to a very, very rich family

jisung is standing at the entrance, and you trot towards him

when he spots you he waves and smiles “hi! good afternoon”

“good afternoon, jisung,” you greet politely, though you are still thoroughly shook “is this... is this your house?” 

“is this...” he looks surprised for a moment before laughing and shaking his head “no, it’s not, it’s chenle’s. his family is super rich. there’s a practice room in there that they almost never use, so chenle lets me use it all the time.”

you glance back and forth between him and the huge house

right, zhong chenle is rich, you forget that sometimes because he seems... more or less normal

“and... his parents are okay with this?”

jisung nods, heading towards the gate and gesturing for you to follow “yeah! his parents don’t mind.”

“is chenle here right now?”

“i don’t know. i’ll ask him. he knows we’re here, of course.” jisung shrugs “even if he’s not here, it’s... it’s fine for us to use the room, since chenle knows i’m not going to break anything or stuff like that.”

jisung pauses at the gate to type in a code and you ask, “so... you just use your best friend’s house for dance practice? even when he’s not here?”

“yep”

you shake your head, finding that setup somehow quite funny as jisung leads you into the house

and you try not to look too astonished at how grand the house is

you’re pretty sure some of it shows, though, since when jisung glances over at you, a faintly amused smile creeps over his face 

he glances away quickly enough, looking embarrassed at being caught observing you

the two of you arrive at a large dance practice room with a big mirror on one side of the wall and a little speaker system set up in the far corner

jisung plops himself down against the wall, looking completely comfortable making himself right at home 

you set your bag down as he pulls out his laptop from his bag “i brought this so we can look through songs and choreographies”

“okay” you sit down next to him “any ideas for the type of song?”

“i thought about... something more traditional, i guess? not totally old-fashioned, if you get my drift. but still. i’ve always wanted to try genres like that. they tend to have fun partner dances.”

“ooh..” you hum in agreement “that sounds fun, too. let’s start looking, then...” you pause as jisung pulls up youtube “do we need an original choreography or can we follow one?”

jisung pauses in his typing as he responds “i asked taeyong. it can be either, it’s up to us. he needs to approve it, though.”

“oh... what do you want to do, then?”

“i... i don’t mind either way” jisung shrugs “i guess... we can look through some choreographies first and see if any catch our eye, or if any songs sound particularly inspiring”

“i’m assuming it can just be one to two minutes, right?”

“yeah.”

and so the two of you begin your search for choreos and songs that you’d like to perform

it takes about twenty minutes for the two of you to find something

the song is fast-paced, latin-sounding thing, and the choreography is... well, it’s spectacular

you’re not sure what it is about this choreography but you immediately latch on to it. this is what you want to perform

it has a certain powerful, energetic spirit, it matches the song perfectly, and you can easily tell it’s painfully intricate and detailed- especially the partner elements

this is a legitimate couples dance

there’s no way for anyone perform the dance on their own- a partner is most definitely needed in this routine

you just. really want this song. 

so you check over at jisung and thank god

the look on his face is delighted and completely taken in by the video- it’s easy to see that he’s having the same thoughts as you

“i...” you clear your throat “i want this song. i like it.”

jisung smiles, looking happy at what you said “i like it too. so, we both want to do it- then... there’s no discussion necessary, right?”

“looks like it!”

“i’ll send it to taeyong, i’m sure he’ll approve it though” jisung picks up his phone and shoots off a message to taeyong before turning back to you “should we watch it a couple more times?”

you nod cheerfully “sure!”

as the two of you go through the video a few more times, you become more convinced that yes, this is definitely something you want to try

there’s something a bit concerning though

well. just a bit

the routine has a fair amount of bodily contact- like hands on waists, dipping, faces being one inch apart, hand holding, stuff like that

it’s not as if you’re super against that but

you don’t know jisung that well. you’re not super comfortable with him,,, but it’s easy to see that to pull this dance off, partners have to be extremely comfortable with getting up close and personal

that... creates a bit of worry for you

and it’s a bit embarrassing to think about

you really want to do it, but- perhaps... if he’s not comfortable,,,

as you chew on your lip you glance over at him,,, and yes, his face is a bit pink, he’s definitely noticed 

he coughs nervously “um... (y/n)- there’s... there’s not much personal space to be had in this routine... if you’re not comfortable with it then-”

“oh, no!” you shake your head “i’m- i’m fine with it, as long as you’re also okay with doing that-”

“i- i don’t have problems with it, don’t worry!” jisung ducks his head to face his feet, looking a tad embarrassed “it’s something new for me, but i’m willing to try”

“it’s new for me too” you offer “we can learn together!”

jisung looks very relieved, though his cheeks are still a bit redder than usual, and you’re pretty sure yours are too 

“okay, let’s both do our best then” jisung smiles at you before his phone buzzes “oh, it’s taeyong!”

he checks it briefly before his grin widens a bit “he said he likes it.”

“oh! that’s good”

“so, uh... do you want to start learning it right now?”

“i... i don’t know, let me-”

then your phone buzzes and your heart flutters with excitement

it’s the special notification sound you set for anything ballet-related,,, so... that must mean- audition results

“sorry, jisung, this is important, hold on-” you bite down on your lip nervously as you turn your phone on

a few seconds later a brilliant smile breaks out on your face 

“yes!” you squeal happily “i did it!”

jisung looks a bit confused “...did what?”

“sorry, didn’t tell you” there’s still a slightly giddy grin on your face “i got picked for the main role in the ballet production my studio is doing!”

“oh!” jisung’s face clears “congratulations!”

“i was really nervous, so- oh, this is good,” you chirp happily, sending back affirmation to the director before texting heejin about your successful audition

“...hey, (y/n)?”

“yeah, what is it?”

“if this isn’t weird...” jisung is fidgeting with his shirt “can i- can i see one of your ballet routines? i really want to see you dancing- i mean, if that’s not too odd-”

a strange feeling that is somewhat pleased and flattered fills you

“it’s no problem, of course!” you’re always happy to show people ballet

so you put on some music “this is the routine i auditioned with! it’s romeo and juliet, by the way.”

“...you got juliet’s part?”

“yep!” you smile cheerfully “that means i die in the end, but whatever”

jisung chuckles as you stand up,,, and you slip into the starting position, trying to ignore the fact that he’s there

it’s a bit embarrassing but you soon forget that he’s watching you

you let yourself go into the music and your surroundings fade away- your part is juliet, you’re juliet now, not (y/n), that’s the character you have to embody

this quick routine is basically muscle memory for you so it’s over before you know it

a slight blush appears on your face before you give a small bow and peek at jisung “was i good?”

his eyes are shining with thrilled excitement “you were great!” he exclaims “ten and sooyoung weren’t lying, i suppose... that was really good, (y/n!) you’re a good ballerina.”

your blush darkens and you hurriedly sit down, flustered “thank you... oh, but don’t say it like that, i don’t know how to respond-”

“no, seriously” jisung insists earnestly “you were really graceful and elegant, i liked it”

you giggle nervously, secretly delighted by the praise “i... thank you, jisung! it’s really nice to hear that”

after that, the two of you come to an agreement to meet up here again tomorrow- each of you will start learning your individual part at home, then start putting it together tomorrow

this arrangement comes to be mostly because jisung received a panicked text from one of his friends telling him that they forgot to finish a project

so today’s time is cut short

“do you want to grab something from the kitchen before leaving?” jisung offers “there’s a lot of stuff in there”

you frown “...is that allowed?”

“yeah! i’ve done it before”

so the two of you take a detour to the kitchen, and lo and behold, chenle’s actually there, sitting at the kitchen counter and watching something on his laptop

“oh, hey!” jisung grins “you’re here!” 

chenle looks up and a big smile breaks out on his face “jisung, hi! and (y/n) too~ you guys finished early!”

“yeah...” jisung smiles sheepishly “renjun and i forgot to finish our history project”

“oh, of course” chenle rolls his eyes teasingly “not surprised. oh, and if you’re here to get food, then go ahead, kitchen’s yours” he waves vaguely at the shelves behind him

so you pick up a couple of cookies before leaving chenle’s house and waving goodbye to jisung, who’s rushing home to do his project

when you get home the dance team chat buzzes again- it’s taeyong

two of the pairs have already decided on their choreographies! the rest of you, you still have time, but if you’re going to make an original choreography, you better start soon

you scan through a series of excited congratulatory texts from heejin

then taeyong texts again hey, does anyone know where ten is? he won’t tell me and i swear i’ll pay anyone who does know

a response from ten: i’m in church like a good christian boy

you raise your eyebrows, fighting a laugh as a reply from jeno pops up ‘it’s not even sunday, no one’s at church’

at the same time, jisung replies with ‘good christian boy my ass’

you roll your eyes 

watching ten send back aggressive protests and taeyong’s attempts to get things back under control is quite entertaining, but you have other things to do

like practicing your parts for the choreography you’ve picked

it’s really an interesting dance, with lots of little details that are quite difficult to get right

you’re still excited to do it though!

later on you receive the practice schedule for romeo and juliet and scan over it briefly

as planned, you show up at chenle’s mansion again the next day

jisung says a gentle, polite hello to you, and the two of you walk right in like it’s not someone else’s house

chenle’s in the garden, and the two of you greet him before going in

and you get right to business! jisung pulls up the choreography video while asking, “did you practice last night?”

“yeah, i did! i think i have the basic idea down for most of it. you?”

“me too, we just need to put it together now”

you have most of your part learned- the rest of it being details you glossed over and more importantly moves you can’t do without jisung

this will be hard to perfect

and so the two of you get right to it

okay, so yes, you were expecting a bit of awkwardness and embarrassment, and it hits right away

you haven’t actually had notable physical contact with jisung before and it shows

the starting position is your back pressed up against jisung’s front with his hands on your waist and your hands on his forearms

suddenly you’re wondering if this was such a good idea 

it’s just kind of weird being so close to him,,, your face is kind of warm and you think you can hear your heartbeat because it’s fluttering a bit faster than normal

but if you think you’re embarrassed,,,, you have not seen jisung

poor boy is basically hyperventilating internally

he hasn’t really tried partner dancing like this before??? so he’s super nervous,,, and he doesn’t know whether you’re comfortable

is he too close? should he move his hands higher? is he holding too tight, or too lightly? jisung doesn’t mind being this close, but he’s afraid that you mind

he’s also in the leading position for this dance so he’s going to have to take more initiative and that makes him nervous

so neither of you look at the mirror because you're both kind of pink and you don’t want to see it

“is- is this good?” jisung asks anxiously his voice is a little scared and it’s a bit endearing but you try to ignore that in favor of nodding

the two of you start to slowly move through the choreography- you both know the basic skeleton, but there are details, and you have to be careful to match each other

“we’ll get it eventually,” you giggle as jisung almost trips over your foot for the fifth time

he groans “,,, we really have to be less awkward to do this properly...”

“we’ll get there!” you promise over the next month, the two of you do get there and become closer, as does the whole dance team as a whole

taeten take the whole month and some to choreograph the full group dance because apparently they haven’t ever done it for such a large group before- they intend on having a detailed choreo and letting everyone be in the spotlight at least once- and they’re extremely busy

every friday they apologize for taking so long

but it gives everyone more time to practice their duets, so it’s fine!

the dance team’s high school members- which would be you, heejin, jisung, jaemin and jeno- start hanging out a fair bit after school

the boys have called you and heejin over to their lunch table several times,,, and the five of you are always throwing paper airplanes at each other in class to get each others’ attention

you’ve also decided on a team name! the eight of you are now named halcyon- the word means something like great prosperity and happiness, as well as recalling a mythological bird who could charm the sea into calm

over this month, you start getting busy. like really busy

ballet practice kicks into full swing and you have so much goddamn choreo to memorize,,, and you’re spending as much time practicing with jisung as humanly possible because you’re both awfully perfectionist

the two of you are a lot more comfortable with each other now though

practice pays off sjdhjhs spending so much time together has made the two of you a lot more familiar with each other

you’re now comfortable with physical contact- even a little bit in public is fine

like when the two of you sit together during lunch you can lean on jisung’s shoulder if you want, neither of you mind if your arms or legs are touching, little things like that

the two of you have made a habit of hanging out for a while after practice,,, like to get boba or whatever

you’re very close with each other now lmao

it’s just easy for the two of you to get along,,,and that doesn’t slip past the other members

heejin won’t stop needling you about it and how close you and jisung have gotten in such a short amount of time

especially given the duo choreo- the duos have to show what they’ve learned during practice and oh boy when you and jisung performed what you had perfected of your song for the first time

jaemin: leAVE SPACE FOR JESUS

taeyong: ...you two are really good at this wow you look so comfortable with each other

ten: is that a hanD ON A WAIST I SEE YOUNG MAN

heejin: eww why are you staring into each others’ eyes so hard is that part of the choreo

jeno and sooyoung: *literally catcalling*

the other members started teasing the two of you after that about how you had to pick a romantic sort of dance and how the two of you have excellent chemistry and look so comfortable with each other 

actually last week after you and jisung showed off the part where he lifts you off the ground and spins you around, you caught taeten cooing over how cute the two of you look together

also you posted a selfie of when one time you and jisung went out to get boba and jesus christ the comments on that one

you would think the two of you announced an engagement 

(everyone you know is crazy. that’s the conclusion you can draw from that ngl)

and it’s not just teasing from the dance team members, heejin sent the video of you and jisung’s dance to your other friends too so now hyejoo and yerim are always teasing you, especially after they saw that selfie-

“are you sure you’re not dating-”

and they’re not shy about doing it in front of both of you

apparently jisung is a complete tsundere and it’s actually pretty adorable like “we are nOT- what are you imPLYING”

you either just blush or roll your eyes, depending on the audacity of the teasing comment

it’s not as if you’re opposed to the idea of dating jisung, he’s sweet and adorable, but it’s just... not a thing

you’re not sure how he feels about it anyway so you just ignore the teasing,,, and he gets a bit pink when it happens, which is cute

soon enough ten and taeyong finish the choreography for the full group performance, and at the next team meeting, they start teaching it

(of course, the duos show off their dances first and in comes the customary round of teasing directed at you and jisung, but whatever.)

it’s pretty interesting! it’s a very detailed choreography built around eight members only with changing formations and all that

and it starts out easy

but then there’s one move. or one sequence of moves,,, that you just cannot get the hang of

your body just... refuses to move that way for some reason

it’s only an introductory teaching today to give a feel of what the choreo will look like though,,, so you don’t bring it up and decide to go over it at home

newsflash: you still can’t get it

it’s really disappointing, especially because everyone else could

you feel like you’re improving a little, but you still can’t get the hang of those moves and it’s very negligible improvement

plus ballet is starting to get stressful

so at the next meeting, when they start going into more detail, you feel yourself lagging behind

it’s not just those moves- you feel that your ability to do this genre of dance is lower than everyone else’s in general, and it’s noticeable

you just don’t look as sharp and smooth as the others do and it’s actually very embarrassing because you haven’t been this bad at anything involving dancing in a while

which leads to you being too afraid to try because you don’t want to embarrass yourself and show them that you’re not as good

so you just have a disheartened air the whole practice

and.... you’re really just not used to being bad at dancing

you’re pretty sure taeten, jisung and heejin notice- they’re all looking at you with concern, especially when it comes to that one sequence and you kind of just shrink

but you refuse to tell them what’s up,,,

you’re getting increasingly frustrated though

when practice is over you wave heejin away, not wanting her to be late to her tutoring, and she frowns, giving you a ‘you-wont-tell-me-but-i-know-you’re-sad’ hug before leaving to her tutoring class

the rest of the team is starting to leave when jisung tugs you aside

“hey, (y/n), what’s wrong? you seemed... really worried today”

“nothing,” you grumble, shaking him off “i’m fine.”

“you are not fine,” he insists, eyes wide and earnest “you looked so down the whole time. and you weren’t trying, i know you weren’t, i’ve seen you dancing before. what’s wrong?”

god, you don’t want to admit it to jisung of all people, jisung who’s so good at dancing and managed to pull off the choreo perfectly today, jisung who has such high opinions of you...

“(y/n)... come on...” jisung’s voice is sincere and concerned

you sigh “okay, look, i just... i know it might not be that difficult in reality, but i can’t seem to pull the group choreo off? i just look so awkward and not like the rest of you, and there’s that one sequence that i can’t manage to do properly? at least everywhere else i can pretend, but there, it’s really obvious that i can’t.”

you trail off, looking up at jisung, who looks pensive and thoughtful

it’s a moment before he speaks again, and he’s grabbing your hand and pulling you toward the center of the room “come on, hurry”

“w-what?”

“you said you can’t pull it off well, right?” jisung smiles hopefully at you “well, i’m going to help you practice until you can”

“oh...” you feel your heart lift- he really is very sweet and caring, isn’t he... “but isn’t this... ten and taeyong are gone, this is their apartment complex- are we allowed to use this?”

jisung shrugs “well... they say no one ever uses it, so i think we’ll be fine”

“you- you don’t have anything better to do?” you question hesitantly

“this is something better, i want to help you,” he insists “it’s troubling you, and i don’t want that. besides, it’s always easier to learn dance with someone teaching you”

so you give in and you start going over the moves bit by bit

it really is easier with someone teaching you, and jisung’s actually quite a decent coach- he’s patient and gentle and encouraging,,, walks you through every step until you finally get it

he doesn’t get frustrated even when you do “just try again, i’m sure you’ll get it this time!”

hypes you up when he so much as spots a spark of improvement

and because you’re comfortable with physical contact jisung can just reach out and adjust your position whenever you’re off

you’re not sure how long you spend in the room but eventually you get it correct,,, not like you’re suddenly really good, but you manage to move through it properly and it doesn’t look awkward

“i did it!” you cheer happily, bouncing up and down “jisung, i did it~”

he’s grinning brightly “you did! good job!”

you tackle him into a hug because you’re kind of unreasonably happy about it “thank you so much, jisung!”

he stutters and blushes, but reciprocates happily “no problem”

it’s a few minutes and a few more run-throughs later when you cough “hey... what time is it?”

apparently it’s actually really late- like it’s dark out and you’re surprised no one’s come to kick you out of the practice room

you’re on your way out when jisung clears his throat “hey, (y/n)... cause it’s really late, i was just thinking- you don’t live far, right? w-would- would you... like me to... w-walk you home, maybe?”

you can barely respond without stuttering like him (and you definitely avoid eye contact) because that is painfully adorable and sweet and yes, you would like that

so he does 

it’s quite nice- just two friends walking through the night, talking about everything and nothing, giggling once in a while when something’s funny

the walk passes by in a blur because jisung is just so easy to be with and you’re simply happy to be around him

“we’re here,” you chirp “thanks so much for walking me home, jisung!”

“it was- um- it was nice walking with you,” he offers before smiling sweetly at you “are you up for duet practice tomorrow or are you tired?”

you grin back “i’m up for it! and, uh- thanks again for staying back to teach me the dance, really...”

“it was no problem,” he insists earnestly

and then you’re really not sure what possesses you

maybe it’s the way he’s smiling at you or the way the glow from the streetlights illuminates his face,,, you really don’t know

but you just lean in and touch your lips to his briefly

and then you immediately mentally regret it because what in god’s name did you just do

it’s not like it lasted for that long but still

jisung looks more startled than you “i- wh-”

“uh- yeah, thanks for everything tonight,” you squeak out, wondering where the hell that impulse came from “good night, jisung!”

and you hear him call an uncertain “good night” after you as you duck into your building

the second you’re out of sight though,,, jisung lifts his hand to his lightly tingling lips

his face is warm and pink and he can’t stop from smiling just a bit

meanwhile you’re fretting over whether you just ruined your friendship- which is probably paranoid of you, but you really have no idea why you did that, you just really wanted to kiss him all of a sudden apparently???

so the next day you’re terrified to hell and back that your dance practice with him will be awkward

thankfully it’s not

jisung seems happy to not bring it up and so are you,,, so you just don’t, and you go on as usual

except for that one part in the choreo where his face gets really close to yours

when you guys get to that part all you can think of is what you did last night and maybe what it would be like to properly kiss him again,,, and you turn bright red before tripping over him

which just makes him laugh

you think you hear him mumble “cute” but you’re too embarrassed over your mistake to pursue that thought further

the two of you head out to grab a snack again afterwards, as usual

on the way to the dessert parlor you both love, you’re walking along in comfortable silence before another impulse picks at your head again

you kind of want to hold his hand

it’s not like the two of you don’t link fingers once in a while when you’re sitting next to each other,,, but you don’t do it in public while walking around

and the thought of it makes you strangely flustered

so you just shrug to yourself and link arms with him 

jisung glances down and looks a bit confused before smiling hesitantly at you and relaxing

it’s nice walking arm in arm with him

standing in line at the counter to order, you feel a bit more fluttery than usual but you don’t think anything of it

next friday,,, it’s dance practice again!!!

and this time when you go over the full group choreo you manage to do the whole thing quite well

you grin happily and jisung catches your eye in the mirror before sending you a proud grin and mouthing good job at you

which makes you flush a little

but you’re mostly just really happy that you got it

after practice you, jisung, heejin, jeno, and jaemin go out to a coffee shop to chill for a while

it’s one you and jisung go to fairly often after practice

so you think nothing of ordering one of those big milkshakes to share like usual- you have the same favorite drink, and it’s just cheaper lmao

jisung’s stuck in the two straws and you’re taking a sip when you catch the other three staring at you

“...what?”

the three glance at each other knowingly

“that’s cute,” jeno sighs a moment later,,, jaemin pouts at him “why don’t you do this sort of thing with me?”

“...i did it once, i left for ten seconds and you drank eighty percent of it. never again.”

heejin tilts her head “so you two are just casually doing couple things now?”

“w-what?” you squeak “heejin-”

she raises her eyebrows “don’t act innocent, and don’t give me that look, jisung, sharing drinks is a thing dating people do-”

“we are not dating!” jisung yelps “we’re just-”

“we’re friends!” you add “sharing milkshakes is a friend thing too, guys, come on, i share drinks with you, heejin!”

“no, you don’t, i ask you and you let me take one sip before snatching it away,” heejin corrects

you roll your eyes but you can’t quite muster a snarky response

(your mind is back to when you kissed him last week,,, not that that kissing incident means anything-)

“maybe it’s a friend thing, but in general, it’s typically a couples thing to do and it has that sort of connotation,” jeno points out reasonably, eyes twinkling with amusement

jisung’s pink again and you still can’t think of anything to say

heejin raises her eyebrow at your lack of protest so she continues needling you,,, and later on jaemin snaps a picture of you and jisung for no reason

that night you found out he uploaded it with the caption i’m with other people but i feel like i’m third wheeling

he was nice enough to crop out your and jisung’s faces

but it’s still enough to make you turn red

heejin’s comment is the top one- not dating my ass

chenle’s is right under, asking inquisitively, who are they???

jeno just has a laughing emoji

and then there’s people speculating as to who it is

thankfully you don’t see your or jisung’s names anywhere- that would just be embarrassing

you scroll back up to eye the picture,,, and you have to concede that out of context, it does look like a dating picture, with the shared milkshake and oh god jaemin managed to catch the one second jisung was playing with your fingers to bug you

you try to forget about it

and it mostly works because stress from school is starting to really set in,,, besides, ballet practice is tiring you out a lot

then the next dance practice with the team rolls around

you’ve been practicing in the school dance practice rooms lately because some of the elderly have been booking taeten’s usual room for yoga and things like that

and you guys get to a part in the choreography where taeten are planning for you to do something fancy and acrobatic

once again, it was sooyoung who told them you could do that

taeyong gives you an idea of what he wants, and lo and behold, it is something within your ability so you go ahead with it

that part of the choreography is pretty difficult so you keep running through it

at some point though you start flagging a bit because you’re exhausted already and this isn’t helping

“do you need to take a break?” ten asks briefly

but you shake your head “i’m good”

what happens next is both a mistake on your part and jisung’s

you’re going into your acrobatic sequence when jisung doesn’t get out of the way fast enough

so you bump into him

and before you realize you lose your balance and fall hard onto your ankle

a shot of pain stabs up through your leg

instantly you know that you’ve probably sprained it,,, you’ve had a good share of foot injuries, being a ballerina

so you’re not too alarmed

(but it hurts a lot, so you let yourself shriek a little)

everyone around you immediately freaks out

“(y/n)!” heejin yells “are you okay?”

jisung kneels down next to you “i- i’m so sorry! i tripped you, i’m so sorry, are you alright?”

“it’s not your fault,” you mumble out, sighing as you sit up and start tugging on your shoe to examine your foot

the other members visibly cringe as you hiss and flinch

“no, don’t,” taeyong states sharply “you’re going to the nurse”

“but-”

“i’ll take you, come on,” jisung mumbles “i tripped you, so i’ll do it”

“jisung-”

despite your protests that you’re just fine, jisung walks you to the nurse’s office anyway

“thank god we’re at school...” you sigh out as you enter the office

the nurse quickly makes you sit down and checks your foot, and every time you glance over to jisung you frown

he looks so guilty and concerned, and winces when you do

“it’s a moderate sprain, just stay off it for a while, you’ll be fine in a week or two” the nurse smiles at you “i’ll write you a note and get you a cast, just stay right here”

she disappears into the storage room

“(y/n), i-”

“don’t apologize” you interrupt jisung and pat the empty spot next to you “come on, sit down, you look awkward just standing there”

he does and sighs “it’s just... you were in pain, and i hated that”

you soften a little “oh, come on, it wasn’t that much, i’ve sprained ankles before-”

“no, you don’t get it...” he falters a little “i- look, i just feel so guilty because it’s partly my fault, and i hate seeing you hurt- it’s just... i care about you a lot, (y/n), and i really like you. i like you so much- it hurts me when you’re like this even if it’s not a lot-”

he stops himself

“o-oh...” you blink at him “i-”

“oh, no,” he mutters under his breath “i’m sorry i said that, you don’t need that right now, i really didn’t-”

“no, jisung, what were you saying?” you interrupt, and you’re not sure where this is going or where you want it to go

“i didn’t plan for it to go this way...” he mumbles “i- i said, i really like you, i like you a lot, and it hurts me to see you injured even if it’s just a little bit, especially if it’s partially my fault...”

“you- you like me?”

he’s bright pink and can’t look at you “yes...”

“w-what? for how long?” your face is burning too

“i don’t know... i think i... i realized it after you kissed me, i liked it, and then i realized i liked you that way, but maybe i felt that way before...?” his voice, uncertain, lifts up into a wondering, unsure tone

he rushes ahead “so i guess- what i want to get at is- i swear i didn’t intend for it to go this way, but the secret’s out so i might as well... will you- w-will you be-”

“your girlfriend?” you finish for him

“yes...”

“i will!” you announce happily, grinning all over

“you will?” he looks so delighted and startled that you giggle “yeah, i will! now that you’ve said it- i guess i was feeling those feelings too, i’m just happy when i’m with you. heck yeah, i’ll be your girlfriend!”

jisung just smiles widely and you’re about to lean in to kiss him properly this time when the nurse comes back in with your cast

you’re not sure if she heard

but she has a knowing smirk so actually you’re pretty sure

when the two of you go back down to the practice room, jisung announces that your ankle is only sprained

and then you chime in “we’re dating!”

the reactions are delightfully varied

ten shouts “taeyong, forK OVER mY moNEY-”

three different people declare “i told you so!” at the exact same time

jisung just sighs “i... i knew that was going to happen...”

“you bet on my love life?” you yelp indignantly while ten just nods proudly, pocketing a twenty 

(later you find out yerim and heejin were also betting on it and you almost kick heejin out the window)

but anyway

you’re both sort of new to dating so you just figure things out as you go,,, in a way, your relationship doesn’t change that much

but you’re both more open to more affection with each other now

hand holding under the table and just casually when you’re hanging out with each other

just being soft around each other everywhere you are

jisung will literally sprint ahead of you to hold doors open for you and is always offering to help you carry your stuff

loves playing with your hair

sitting or taking walks in silence just enjoying each other’s company

you’re both too shy to get too into it in public but you both love affection and skinship

you’ve kissed him in public a few times- mostly to see him blush

he’s still unused to it and will shove you away because he’s so impossibly flustered

but jisung’s just the best, cutest, most supportive boyfriend of all time and will basically do anything for you

jisung just smiles and reaches for your hand quietly

you dodge that and just full on kiss him at the doors of the ballet studio because you’re giddy with after-show euphoria and you’re just delighted to be with him

aggressive cheering from everyone who sees it

oh that’s right they were in the audience too but you weren’t paying attention to them

jisung drags you out to get dessert afterwards

“okay, well, i was a bit meh on the parts with you and the guy playing romeo...” jisung admits to you over his ice cream

is your room messy or clean? - it’s somewhere in between. my actual ROOM (bed room, i assume) is pretty clean, except i never make the bed. but the house is .. a work in progress. it’s not dirty but it’s cluttered so my bf and I are having to work together to clear that and build shelves and stuff for more storage space.

2. Work you are most proud of (and why):

i don’t wanna pretend (that you’re only my friend), because it was my first nick/niall fic and also the first longer fic i worked on in a while, even though i ended up posting it later in the year. plus, i just really like some of the things i wrote for it.

3. Work you are least proud of (and why):

i wouldn’t say i’m not proud of at the end of the road because it’s the longest thing i’ve written in years and i’m happy with large parts of it, but i’m a little disappointed with myself for having to abandon the big plans i had for it. idk, i wanted to do so much more than what i ended up with? so yeah, the whole writing process could’ve gone better. 

4. A favorite excerpt of your writing:

“Now kiss!” Liv shouts eventually, and Nick and Niall both freeze.

“Yes,” Jane agrees with her daughter though, “take one of those typical couple shots! That’ll be funny in your costumes!”

Liv’s gone over to chanting “kiss, kiss, kiss!” at them, and she’s somehow got a full glass of wine again. Niall bursts out laughing looking at her and then says to Nick, “Let’s just do it.”

“What?” Nick asks incredulously, then lowers his voice even more. “I promised you no snogging.”

“It’s just a little kiss,” he says, “if anything it’ll make us even more believable.”

“What are you waiting for?” Jane asks, and she’s now got a glass again too. “I’m growing roots over here!”

She and Liv cackle and clink glasses and Niall tells them, “he’s just shy in front of you guys! We’re doing it, right, Nick?”

“If you’re sure it’s okay,” Nick whispers, and Niall sighs deeply, grabs Nick’s face between his hands and pulls him into position.

“Yes, I told you,” he says, and closes the distance between them.

He knows immediately why this was a terrible idea. Nick’s lips soften under his, kissing him back, and his arms go around Niall’s back, pulling him closer.

Niall follows blindly, lifting up on his tiptoes and sliding one hand from Nick’s jaw to the back of his head, knocking his hat askew.

This was a terrible idea because Niall’s not gonna be able to stop thinking about this, never in his life, he’s sure of it. It was a terrible idea because he’s gonna want to do it again. Kissing Nick is everything Niall would’ve imagined if he’d ever allowed himself to imagine.

They pull apart, and Nick blinks at him for a few seconds before taking a step back. Niall’s dropped the impressive paper moustache he’d been holding in front of his face for the first few pictures at some point, even though he can’t remember when it happened. He swallows, then turns to Liv and Jane with a grin. “Got any good ones?”

5. Share or describe a favorite comment you received:

oh, i genuinely love every single one of them, my heart literally jumps every time i get an email notification about a comment on one of my fics :’) @sarcathlon and @queerlyalex are particularly good at picking out things they liked which i LOVE, ao3 user musiciansfriend (who are youuu) comments on like everything i write and is just wonderful, but honestly? every comment is my favourite

6. A time when writing was really, really hard:

most of it? lol (no but there was this time when i was unemployed and travelling lots for 3 months and every time i sat down to write there was just. nothing.)

7. A scene or character that you wrote that surprised you:

probably nick, actually. he’s made appearances in my fics before but never as a main character and it’s been so much fun figuring out how to write him

8. How did you grow as a writer this year:

i hope i learn something new with everything i write but idk if i grew...maybe in my determination to write despite the writer’s block

9. How do you hope to grow next year:

finally move past the writer’s block that’s been hanging over my head for two years. improve my show-don’t-tell. write more unpredictably. 

10. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):

well, @thinkimfromspace is the reason i finished my longest fic of the year, and @spaceziall is the best cheerleader i could ask for, @sarcathlon boosts my ego in the nicest way. every person who comments on fics or encourages me while i’m writing or when i’m gearing up to do so (includes headcanoning with @mustbeseeingblind @actualhumansunshine and @hiatusniall among others) has been a positive influence, and i wouldn’t be able to do it without you <3

11. Anything in your real life show up in your writing this year:

my anxiety almost inevitably shows up in all my niall characterisations, and maybe the uncertainty about the future in at the end of the road?

12. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:

always, and very rarely planned. i have a hendes AU in the works that i really want to finish, and everything else is probably just gonna happen someway. my inspiration strikes very randomly lol

Answer 10 questions about your writing process, then tag 10 writers whose process you want to know more about. The point of this game is to have fun.

1. How do you get your story ideas? How do you know when something is worth writing and when it’s just a fleeting thought or fantasy? Tell us the origin story of one of your past or current WIPs.

I’m super inspired by movies, especially super genre ones. I actually used to never watch a lot of TV so a lot of my inspiration either comes from books or movies. But I’m also usually inspired by anything as cliche as it sounds!

If it’s worth writing it usually needs to be something I can see in my mind. Again with the movie stuff - I need to feel like I can watch it in my head and write it out. If I can’t see it, I don’t write it. But I usually also have too many ideas so I try to make sure I’m stoked enough to try to finish it.

I have three current WIPs - my Western one was initially inspired by The Magnificent Seven. My X-Files AU for Lumax has been bouncing around my head for a while and I’m finally getting that one written (the inspo is pretty obvious hahaha). And my Bellarke soulmark AU is inspired by all of the other awesome soulmate fics with a bit of inspo of my own relationship sprinkled in asfkdsjfklsdj.

2. What are your writing tools of choice? Are you picky? Do you have specific brands you like? If you have neuroses in this department, we want to hear about them.

I mainly just use Pages on my laptop and then will jot notes down on my phone if they hit me randomly! But I don’t have any particular feelings towards anything in particular. 

3. Where and when do you write? Morning? Dead of night? Your bedroom? The park? Paint us a picture of your usual surroundings when you sit down to write.

I tend to write whenever, but most often in the evenings! I usually sit at my counter in the kitchen and just write away, though if I have a slower day at work I’ll try to sneak in a little bit! Occasionally in my room but I spend most of my time at the counter.

4. Do you ever encounter writer’s block? If so, how do you overcome it? Any tips to pass on to other writers reading this?

Loooolll all of the time. It’s probably why I’ve written so many things, I’ll jump on something else when I feel like one project is just giving me fits. Since I only do this for fun, I let it ride out and either switch to gif making or a different fic! It’s not worth the frustration for me. Idk if that counts as a tip hahaha. Let yourself be stuck but then look for inspiration in other places to inspire you.

5. Do you outline? If no, why not? If yes, what kind of outlines do you make, and at what point in your writing process do you make them?

For multi-chapter fics I’ll outline. Usually some type of bulleted lists of the main plot points and action that need to happen, maybe some quotes I’ve already thought of. I’ve outlined a couple one shots before too but if they’re shorter I’ll let them flow as is. I really enjoy outlining at the start though because it helps me get in the mindset of the story and fully see it as I go. Also since I like to hop around while I write and not in order, it helps me figure out which scenes to work on while not messing up my earlier stuff.

6. When and how do you edit? After the first draft? During? Do you have a method, or is it kind of a free-for-all?

Mmmmmmmmm I don’t edit nearly enough. I’ll usually do one or two read throughs and then post it. I’m not as concerned about editing but I want to get a little better at it. 

7. Is there anything about your writing process that other people might consider to be unique or weird?

I think one time someone told me it was weird I wrote my endings early on in my work? I usually have an exact idea of how I want to end things so it’s something I write early on and struggle with the middle. 

8. Do you ever take breaks from writing? For how long do these breaks feel rejuvenating, or do they stress you out? Give us a sense of what life is like when you’re not writing.

The breaks usually are random and sporadic depending on my mood or if life and work are too much hahaha. I juggle a shit ton of things in my life and sometimes writing goes by the wayside since it’s just something I do for fun!

9. When do you first start writing? Why? What’s changed since then, if anything?

Oh man I don’t even remember. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I would write all sorts of random stories, usually about witches or teenage girls who were spies. It’s probably from being an only child, all I did was make up stories. I co-wrote a book with a friend in seventh grade. And then in high school I took two semesters of creative writing. But once I got to college I stopped so it wasn’t until almost six years later I started writing again and that’s what you see here! 

10. Anything else you want to tell us about your writing process?

I guess for me the ideas are like mini movies or shows that play in my head and it’s my job to transcribe them for you. It’s why I love writing action and describing things, I want it to feel like you’re watching it play out in your head as well!

Tuck the World Away

Pairing: teenage!Sam x teenage!reader Characters: Sam, the reader, mention of a few others  Warnings: light swearing, some fluff, some angst, ya know a little bit of everything, no monsters au!  Summary: An overview of (Y/N)’s relationship with Sam over the years  A/N: Okay so I’m like really super proud of this one, idk why....so enjoy! Also I changed the tense for the first time so lmk how you like it! It was a little harder to write lol I kept finding myself saying “you” instead of “she” but whatever! Unbetad so all mistakes r mine:)

1990: Fourth grade

The elementary school’s doors seemed bigger and scarier than they every had before as (Y/N) walked in, clutching her mother’s hand tightly. She’d been there once before- to meet the principal and tour her new school- but it hadn’t seemed this terrifying back then.  

Her pigtails bounced up and down as she walked in, peering around nervously at the sea of new faces. They all seemed friendly enough, but a giggle or smile here and there wasn’t enough to make (Y/N) want to let go of her mom’s hand. 

The two of them walked to her classroom to greet (Y/N)’s new teacher. Mrs. Mayweather was a short, blonde haired woman with a kind face- dressed in a long floral dress that didn’t match the dreary weather outside. 

“Alright sweetie, I have to go to work,” Mary (Y/L/N) squeezed her daughter’s hand once before turning to walk back down the hall, “Have fun at your first day of fourth grade!” 

For a minute, (Y/N) didn’t know what to do with herself. Standing there awkwardly in front of the class, she felt completely out of place. Her pink shirt was too bright, her hair was too curly, and nobody else was wearing power rangers light up shoes. 

“Everyone, this is (Y/N).” Mrs. Mayweather chirped,“She’s new this year from California, everybody say hello! You’ll be sitting in the back row, Honey, the open seat just there.” 

Hi (Y/N), the class chorused, turning their heads to look at her and smiling. 

She gave a halfhearted nod at the rest of the kids, shuffling awkwardly to find her seat next to a brown haired boy in a striped shirt. “Hi, my name’s Sam. Wanna be friends?” He said almost instantly after she sat down, smiling big and bright and gap toothed. 

“I’m (Y/N), and, um, sure” She replied with a little grin. 

And even though she wasn’t showing it, (Y/N) was ecstatic to have made her very first friend in New York. 

1991: Fifth grade

(Y/N) had been going to Pratt Elementary school for a little over a year now, and had adjusted quite nicely. She made friends in her 4th grade class, which she then carried onto 5th grade, and discovered her love of reading through a boy named Sam Winchester.  

Ever since the two of them became friends (Y/N)’s first day of school, they’d been attached at the hip. She taught him how to braid hair and he leant her a new book every week from his dad’s collection- which, as far as (Y/N) knew, went on forever. 

Recently at school a rumor had been going around that Jenny Longmeyer and Billy Tang had kissed under the twisty slide at school. And as a result, even though they knew it probably wasn’t true, kissing seemed to be (Y/N) and Sam’s main topic of conversation. 

One sunny afternoon, just after school got out, the two of them were sitting under their favorite tree waiting to be picked up. It was hotter than usual, and (Y/N) was squirming around in her sticky, wool-lined sweater, really fidgeting to no end. 

“What’s the big deal with kissing?” Sam asked randomly, sighing and leaning back, “I just don’t get it.” 

“Me neither- have you ever seen any grown ups do it?” She responded, absentmindedly running her hand over her initials carved into the tree’s trunk- right along side his. 

“Nope,” Sam shrugged, “Only in movies. And even then- seems a little weird.” 

“I don’t know....” (Y/N) turned to him, “Maybe we should try it- just to see what everyone’s talking about.” 

Sam considered it for a moment, “My dad told me I could only kiss the girl I was gonna marry,” 

“Oh come on!” (Y/N) hit his shoulder and whined, “Quit bein’ such a baby about it, Sam!” 

“Alright, fine.” He said, rubbing his arm, “On three, okay?” 

“Yeah, okay.” 

“One.....” 

Both their hearts started thumping and they didn’t exactly know why. 

“Two.....” 

(Y/N) leaned in and closer her eyes, Sam did the same. 

“Three!” 

The two of them butted their heads together, pecking each other on the lips before pulling apart just as quick. It was awkward, half a second long, and everything you’d expect out of a first kiss. 

(Y/N) rubbed her mouth in confusion, “Huh, that wasn’t all it’s chalked up to be.” 

“I didn’t mind it,” Sam said shyly, chees going red before saying, “Hey, if you don’t end up marrying Billy or Charlie or anyone else in our class.... wanna marry me? 

She thought about it for.a second before shrugging and saying, “Sure, why not! I gotta go though, my Mom’s here- see ya tomorrow, Sammy!” 

1992: Summer of sixth grade “Sam!” (Y/N)’s vice shrieked over the phone, “What middle school are you going to?” 

“Uh, one sec, lemme see.” He responded, the rustling of papers ringing in (Y/N)’s ear, “Thoreau School- please tell me you are too.” 

“On ho,” (Y/N) already felt herself starting to cry, “Sammy, I’m going to Emerson.” 

She heard him gasp over the phone, “What’s going to happy? (Y/N) are we still gonna be best friends forever??” 

(Y/N) looked down at her wrist, at the bracelet fastened there that was twin to one on Sam’s ankle, “Yeah, Sammy, we’re always gonna be best friends forever.” 

“Promise?” 

“Pinky promise.” 

He let out a sigh of relief. 

1995: Freshman year  The first day of high school wasn’t exactly what (Y/N) had thought it would be. 

She’d watched all the movies, read all the magazine articles, so she pretty much knew what to expect. Yet, still, when she walked into her first da. of freshman year, everything was pretty new. 

The kids were bigger than they had been in Middle School, wore less clothing and smoked in the bathrooms- something (Y/N) had never done before. She’d walked in with her two best friends, Liz and Hannah, linking arms as they all tried to navigate the halls of their new school. 

Freshman orientation was the first class they headed to, and met the rest of their grade. The way schools worked in Inlet, New York was this: there were two elementary schools, three middle schools, and only one high school. So (Y/N) found herself surrounded by a lot of people she'd never met before, or only knew from 4th and 5th grade. 

The perfect example of this was the boy she found sitting to her right, someone she hadn’t thought about in a long, long time. Sam Winchester 

She remembered they used to be best friends in elementary school, but then went to different middle schools. In 6th grade, they’d tried to keep in touch, but the inevitable had happened and they’d grown apart. After about a year, it got ot the point that they didn’t talk at all. 

Back then Sam had been lanky, awkward and nerdy, but not anymore. Not at all. The guy (Y/N) found herself staring at was nothing like the kid she used to know. 

Puberty must have hit him like a truck because he was god damn beautiful to her. Muscles seemed to bulge out of every inch of his tanned skin- which was almost glowing in the low light of the auditorium. His too-long, parted in the middle hair had been cut, and now hung about his face with just the right amount of shagginess to it. 

When he turned to smile, she saw the white of his teeth flash, “Hey, (Y/N), right?”

“Yeah... Sam Winchester?” 

“Yeah,” He chuckled, “It’s been.... years.” 

“I know, She breathed, “Uh, what do you have next?” 

“History,” He replied after looking down at his schedule, and then back up to her face. 

“Me too!” She said, too loudly, too excitedly, “I mean, yeah, I have history too.” 

But his face lit up, “Which one are you taking??” 

“AP Ancient Greek studies,” She said sheepishly, it was such a nerdy class to be taking as a freshman. 

“Me too! Can I walk you to class? Maybe we have the same teacher,” He smiled and picked up his bag, nodding towards the stairs and telling you to lead the way. 

1996: Sophomore year  (Y/N) had been dating Sam for a little over a year now, and was completely in love with him. 

With him she felt free, wild even. LIke she could dance on tables or run through a storm without a care in the world, and he felt the exact same way. Their relationship was defined by their loose idea of love, and loving each other. Neither he nor she really knew what the word meant, but they did know it was what they were feeling. 

(Y/N)’s idea of love was shaped by her parent’s example, watching sappy rom-coms with her friends and reading Romeo and Juliet on a rainy day. Her idea of love was spending all afternoon lazing around with Sam, tucking the rest of the world away from a few hours. Or getting lost in a corn maze like they had that one time on halloween, and laughing their asses off until Dean had to come find them. (Y/N)’s idea of love was Sam’s crazy, unkept hair in the morning- wild, off kilter and breathtaking. 

Sam had a very different vision of love, and the girl he was in love with. 

He took inspiration from the thousands upon thousands of books he’d read, because he didn’t have two parents to look up to. He looked towards his brother’s love, and knew that what he felt with (Y/N) was just as deep- even though it was a different type of love. Sam had learned from a young age that love was what you made it, and he’d decided that he was going to make his love with (Y/N) last. 

But the first step to doing this, was telling her. 

So one rainy night, when the two of them were curled up together in (Y/N)’s car, he leaned over and whispered it in her ear. 

The sound of the rain almost drowned it out, and when (Y/N) didn’t respond at first he got nervous. But after a moment he heard a sniffle, and went to touch her face. 

He quickly found tears wetting her cheeks, rolling down in thin streams to collect at the collar of her shirt. For a second he wasn’t sure how to react, how to respond. 

But when he asked her why she was crying, she just whispered back it was because she loved him too. She told him she’d loved him since fourth grade, when they sat together in the back of class and drove Mrs. Mayweather insane. She’d loved him when they carved their initials into their favorite weeping willow, and she’d loved him when they’d kissed for the first time under that same tree. 

He was the one crying now and he didn’t know how to respond. All he knew was that she was real, everything they had was real. And even if neither of them understood what love really was, he knew just from the tone in her voice that they were going to make it.
