stuff with gender anguish about not fitting in with today’s current gender constructions

From another post I made: I need to talk about 20th century gender norms at some point as a living breathing 20th century fossil and how different it was. To most straight people, being gender non conforming meant gay, trans was on the far end of the gay spectrum, and gay was associated with being socially Not Normal at a time when you had to be Normal to get a white collar job. (The whole Normalhood thing im gonna talk about is VERY connected to mid-late 20th century construction of the white middle class.) Apropos of gender specifically... I’m not sure how 90s/00s genderfluid/genderqueer map to NB, or whether they do. It’s a big reason I am weird about IDing as NB - because it seems to mean something else than my particular understanding of my identity as it was formed in the 1990s. (Another thing is my social world being more people over 45 at this point and also I’m in a hetero relationship.) Part of 90s GQ stuff was that you could identify as a man part time, a woman part time, you could contain multitudes. “Woman-identified person with a male side” was a legit identity within that, so was “man-identified person with a female side.” You could be one person in the streets and another in the sheets. You could be several people in the sheets, especially if you were aligned with kinky culture. (And for a long time... I was.) There was a greater sense in the 90s and early 00s in genderqueerness culture that you could be GQ for no other reason than wanting to be and it wasn’t assumed to be bundled with physical dysphoria or even desire to change your public social identity. Some spaces - like West Coast geek culture and goth culture - had enough flexibility baked in that we didn’t really need to go to LGBTQ culture to explore our identities, and there was a whole geek queer sensibility that was evolving alongside of the broader LGBTQ culture that was definitely its own... thing.  And while people *say* that NB doesn’t mean any one particular thing or any of these things, that’s not always the message I get when visible NBs on TV/in film are almost always at present one very specific image or “type” of person, and that doesn’t resemble me. NB representation on TV amounts to presenting NB as a third gender with very specific codified behaviors (androgynous AFAB person who binds and has body dysphoria).   The message I get is that whatever my experience is, is better described some other way. Also the discourse around relationships with NBs is that a relationship with an NB is necessarily a queer relationship yet having been in relationships in and out of LGBTQ culture, I’m not really sure how to distinguish “a queer relationship.” My relationship is non-traditional in lots of ways and we’re both gender non-conforming in lots of ways though it doesn’t parse to most people because it’s along the lines of stuff that shouldn’t have ever been gendered in the first place. What my partner does not ever question however is his actual gender identity.  The thing is, actually publicly identifying as anything but a woman would create weird problems in my life in terms of social dynamics, and other stuff, and probably an unpredictable series of ripple effects downstream. But - that... just means I’m closeted, right? And closeted doesn’t mean your identity doesn’t exist or isn’t as unreal as someone who isn’t? And what if - as a “shapeshifter” - my relationship to myself within my relationship *is* part of that shapeshifting?  One of the things is that I’m in a heterosexual relationship. My relationship *is* one of my few spots where I’m happy in my skin, let alone happy in the world and I have no complaints with how I’m perceived in this relationship, and part of it is that practically every assumption about my gender is true, or has been true at some point, including the fact that I’m fine with being seen as a woman in the context of my relationship.  It’s in other spaces besides the intimate, that gender stuff makes my skin crawl. My deep interior gender identity is “pixels floating in the ether, which can assume any shape or form.” My gender identity among other people in non sexual friend spaces is “friend.” My partner identifies as a cis het man. I don’t feel like my relationship has any special quality that’s different from queer relationships I’ve been in, other than identities people have. If my partner doesn’t feel our relationship is queer then I don’t feel it is, either... though it’s not exactly *traditional.*  I don’t feel like our relationship is different from our hetero neighbors’ relationships regardless of whatever history I have. I have no way of knowing what my ostensibly-female ostensibly-heterosexual neighbors’ interior identities really are, or what their history is. And because we’re monogamous, it just never ever comes up. Our social world is about half queer and half not so nothing has changed. After decades of only dating people who had LGBTQ identities, and having a particular social world, now I’m with a cis het man from that same social world and nothing really has changed about the shape of my life.   I’ve moved between different spaces my entire life, sometimes I perceived myself as a boy in a girl’s body, but sometimes I didn’t, and don’t. And gender is one of the spaces in which I feel like a chameleon. There seem to be a ton of gender expression based communities that disappeared since the 90s that either disappeared or were erased from discourse and that makes this weirder/harder to talk about.  Another thing is that a lot of the discourse around pronouns (if pushed I’ll say I’m she/they but I am literally comfortable in anything, depending upon context) makes me really uncomfortable. Even in LGBTQ spaces it makes me uncomfortable. There’s the me that my friends know, and some of my family knows, and it’s a big enough world to contain that part of me at this point. I would rather not put my identity under a microscope in any space that matters. It’s weird but I wish I could just be “they” in the work, creative, etc, spaces, without the loading of what “they” means. I wish it meant nothing about the people who love me, or who I love, or how I love, or how I live my life, besides what pronoun I use. But it doesn’t mean nothing. That is why I hope more cis identified people will actually identify as they in the public sphere. There are plenty of spaces in the public sphere that I don’t think should be gendered at ALL. My wanting to be a “they” is in some ways more about wanting public anonymity and having formed my sense of self - at a tender time - online, than about my gender identity. Which means I’d be potentially appropriating “they” from people for whom it IS a deep identity, and yet... haven’t I spent half of my blog talking about how I’m not exactly the gender identity I advertise?? Haven’t I spent a long time up to now advocating for “they?” Isn’t feeling like a they, evidence that I’m a they?  And the thing is, this is such a YMMV issue and the problem is that EVERYONE has competing access needs with EVERYONE ELSE. Anything one queer person wants or needs seems to oppress some other queer person, and it sucks. But sometimes I wonder if I even need to just recognize how cis het passing my life is and acknowledge my privilege. The thing is though at that point... is it how much oppression we’ve experienced or are currently experiencing, that alone makes our identity? That’s as silly an idea as saying I’m less of a Jew because I haven’t personally experienced a hate crime. And yes there’s a lot to shared oppression experiences forming group identities, but I’m not talking about group identity. I’m talking about personal feelings of identity.

just finished watching the new netflix anime BNA (brand new animal).

wanna give it a review. SPOILERS AHEAD. (also im bad at spelling Japanese names because of my dyslexia so ill be referring to their characters mainly by their titles)

things i liked:

dont trust pharmaceutical companies

the real evil in this world are rich white guys

wolf guy had big dad energy

animation was charming

nina was adorable

some cool biopunk elements

themes of erasing identities for the sake of calm

athletic female protagonist was not sexualized

equality should not mean sameness

cute furries

things that could have been improved:

the ending made no sense at all

it was obvious that alan was the villain all along but the pureblood wolf thing came literally out of left field. there was no buildup at all. no mention of beastman species only marrying each other and the politics therein.

and the solution to this plothole could have been sooooo easy.

have “pureblood” beastmen be high members of society or something. like the malfoy family in harry potter. have it be an actual plotpoint. instead of the entire series being beastmen vs humans up until the final episode.

or have pureblood beastmen be ones with no human ancestry. the same themes apply.

also if alan really was immortal, then a better story would have him as the actual general of the army that wolf boy fought. that would have really clinched the dynamic between them.

the biopunk elements needed to take center stage

some of this may just be my personal taste towards scifi vs fantasy, but i felt like their was a lot of buildup towards a story about genetics and equality that never really went anywhere.

take the scene where rhino guy goes completely bonkers. i thought for sure that it was from him being injected with something by the masked snake guy. that maybe it was some kind of drug to make beastman DNA go completely haywire. i was actually digging his crazy transformation a lot.

but then they go and explain that its some kind of syndrome that beastmen get by being in close quarters?

that felt both like weak writing and a bit ableist.

a better solution would be to have it be an experimental drug that the pharmaceutical company developed and was using the beastman city as a testing ground.

or if it needs to stay connected to the past, perhaps the compound that causes the reaction was found in the environment of wolf boy’s ancient european city. the human army witnessed the beastman transformations and recorded it. eventually alan’s family found why it happened via science and made it into a drug.  

the role of women in the city

the episode with the orphaned kids and grand grandma honestly was a bit of a waste for two reasons.

the first is the very human-centered idea that animals are sexist the way humans are. this is incorrect.

quite a few species are matriarchal. like elephants. or they have no hierarchy at all.

the fact that a lioness was being told she was weak for being female fucking blew my mind. have you ever seen a lion pride? females bring home the food and the males look after the cubs.

the second reason is that, even if you ignore the lack of basic understanding about animal societies, the sexism trope didn’t go anywhere.

we never see any other cases of women being treated badly outside of that episode.

the mayor is never belittled and one of the strongest baseball teams in the city is made of female pink flamingos.

don’t spend a whole episode trying to establish something in the world-building and then don’t use it again.

the mayor’s past as a holocaust survivor should have had more plot importance

maybe this is just me speaking as both a jew and a gay, but i really didn't like that the holocaust was used as just a backstory for how the mayor and wolf boy met.

i was really hoping to find out that there was connection to the pharmaceutical company and the cruel medical experiments that were done in the camps. as many scientific breakthroughs can trace their origins to horrible human experimentation done at the hands of fascist governments.

it also would have cemented alan as personal villain to both wolf boy and the mayor.

how magic works

they did not need to explain everything, but maybe a little explanation here and there could have really made the story clearer.

for example, when tanuki girl arrives in the city she learns about how magic is something that can be found in beastmen blood but it is very rare and species dependent. so tanukis and foxes have a much higher chance to do magic than other species (like japanese folklore). they can change their tails to do basic shape-shifting.

alan’s identity as a beastman

honestly i could write a whole post about him but ill just keep it to the basics.

alan should not have been a beastman. he should have been a human.

because making him a beastman took away the themes of oppression in the story.

alan was a rich, white human man who did not care for the lives of others (human or beastman) and was happy to use them as pawns and test subjects. not to mention his family most likely had ties to the nazis.  

his particular hatred for beastmen could have come from the killing of his ancestor’s army by wolf boy. leading the family to want revenge on all beastmen and the silver wolf in particular.

that is a realistic villain and one that the audience is happy to see defeated.

how fox girl and tanuki girl becam beastmen

i think that them changing into beastmen should have been intentionally done by the pharmaceutical company, not as an accident via hospital embezzlement

two girls badly hurt in a bus crash would have been easy targets to inject an experimental serum. one that was designed to change a human into a beastman so that the company could learn how to reverse it and make all beastmen into humans.

fox girl exhibited symptoms first and was grabbed by big pharma to use as a pawn.

tanuki girl was a spare who eventually disappeared from their radar and then reappeared in the beastman city.

i think that the embezzlement story could still have happened, but the effects were worse. beastman blood sold to the highest bidder, which turned out to be the pharmaceutical company itself and its illegal experiments.

tanuki and fox beastman blood could have been chosen specifically because of their ties to magic as well. which allows for their shape-shifting.

snake guy and his mask

i think that snake guy should have been one of the first beastmen experimented on by the company.

the results left him scarred and stuck between his two forms. but because he was brainwashed by the company, he gladly serves them.

Okay so, my first point is that sex is honestly diverse and yes its always mindblowing in fics, but in reality its not always the case. sometimes sex is bland, sometimes its really good, and sometimes you don’t really enjoy yourself (not in a bad or nonconsensual way, but more it doesn’t leave you as fulfilled as it could and it just feels,,,, meh for a lack of better word for it). that being said, considering you’ve been in a relationship for a long time and it’s your first and (i assume only? sexual partner) i can potentially see why its just been a case of contentment and not real fulfilment - especially, since it seems you haven’t really been communicating and taking each other’s feelings into consideration? well him more so than you.

Side point, he really shouldn’t be whining if you don’t want to have sex but as long as he’s not pressuring you into anything its fine - people tend to whine (i know i do sometimes too)

But please hear me out, I wanna try and help someone with what I know if I can.

I wanna try and give a couple tips on passing as male because I’ve been misgendered pretty frequently as male after a recent wardrobe change. I identify as a cis gendered female but i dress pretty androgynously, i made some alterations to the way i dress and i’ve been addressed as a male a lot in public after that. i just wanna list some stuff that might help someone pass as male:

Glasses: they could be your best friend and the bigger the better when it comes to glasses. They’re a pretty quick and easy way to change the shape of your face. Glasses can make your face look larger and change the look of your cheek bones to look somewhat more masculine. They can also change the shape of your eyes as well, making them look smaller and less traditionally feminine. These changes are by no means drastic but they could help you. If you aren’t so fucking blind you can’t see two feet in front of you like me you can get no prescription or clear glass lenses that are just a single layer of glass. You can get them pretty cheap online too, most pairs don’t cost too much more than $10. You could also wear sunglasses as well but there are times that you can’t wear them like inside or at night without raising suspicion.

Big Clothing: It helps to wear clothes big enough to hide your form (especially if you haven’t gotten/don’t want to get surgery). Wear a shirt that has enough fabric to loose your form in the waves of it. Wear pants that don’t allow you to see your hip forms. and if you aren’t wearing mens clothes and want to, i recommend you switch right now because there are a million benefits to mens clothes you never would have thought of. the point is to wear things that make feminine forms disappear or almost disappear. whatever size you wear, buy something the next size or two up, it might help you. Amazon has tons of good clothing cheap and you can often get it in a bunch of sizes. Theres also a site called Wish were you can get clothes absolutely dirt cheap but its not always reliable and most clothes come from china and take a long time to come, but if you need really cheap clothes id go there.

(also if you wear a binder please be diligent about it. make sure you take it off for a little while and let yourself breathe, don’t exercise or do really labor intensive stuff in it. you could get hurt. but you’ve probably heard all that anyway) 

Short Hair: If you haven’t already and you’re comfortable with it, cut your hair short. This was probably what gets me misgendered the most. get a traditionally masculine hair style and own it. Look for exactly what you want. If you get a haircut and absolutely fucking love it then your more likely to be confident and happy. This is kinda a no brainer i would think but i’m saying it really helps. 

Makeup: this could drastically help you if you do it right. giving yourself more traditionally masculine features using makeup can really help. bigger eyebrows, more defined cheekbones and a larger nose are all things you can accomplish and more. there are tutorials online of how to apply male makeup that will help as well. the one thing i would avoid is giving yourself facial hair with makeup. Drug store stuff is usually pretty cheap and isnt the best quality but it will do if you’re on a budget or don’t want to commit or buy really expensive stuff.

(this is a weird one but) Men’s Products: If you aren’t using them already men’s products will help you in more ways then one. you won’t get as dysphoric using men’s products compared to others and other people that get close enough to smell your musk will smell “man” and assume you’re a man. This probably helped me, i sort of prefer men’s deodorant because it works really really well and it usually smells strong enough to mask strong stress odor so people could usually smell it on me from five feet away. It also comes in more fruity scents than your average “man” deodorant.

You can do as few or many of these as you want and i can’t promise you results for all of them but I just wanna try and help if I can. These are all just suggestions. Most of you who read this probably already knew about this stuff so im sorry if it doesn’t help.

I wanna reiterate that im not trans nor do i think i know what its like. Im not saying I know these things will work for you, but after i did them i noticed a change in people’s behavior toward me. I don’t know what its like. but i do know that passing as male is a huge worry for some people. I just wanted to try and help some guys feel more sure of themselves and get recognized as male a lot more. I really hope at least one thing here will help one person.

I hope I was able to help someone in some way with this. please remember that you are valid. and remember to take life at your own pace and to only do things if you want to, not because you think you should. you deserve to be happy. Can I please get headcanons for Myron with a female non fanalis s/o? Her s/o works as a strategist for the army of Reim and the corps so she often has to run back and forth between the two groups, but hates being around the human man because unlike the fanalis they won't listen a have no respect for her. ☛ Having girly talks aboutignorant men ; Now, not all men are stubborn and look down at women who fightfor their country, but most are. That’s why the fanalis are so amazing! Theyknow women can fight with just as much ferocity as men and so don’t treat themas though they are insignificant in any way shape or form. Myron and her s/owill probably just sit down and talk battle strategies like its no one elsesbusiness, being very professional about it.

This can happenanywhere though most times its in Muu’s office with Muu himself, Myron andoccasionally Lo’lo who isn’t very interested in battle strategies, he prefersjust going in for the kill and then getting out. S/o sometimes has to knocksome sense into him, and being the “gentlemen” he is he’ll sit down and listen,all the while s/o is oblivious to the threatening Myron behind her.

☛ Training with the fanalis ; In case those men ever intend to try anything with Myrons s/o or talk down to her as if they’re dirt, the fanalis like to train them to fight considering their Myron’s s/o, so to them there like family! Myron will make sure that either herself or Muu is present when her s/o is being trained by the other members of the fanalis corpse. Some members, not saying names (Lo’lo) can get to rough for a regular human.

Personally though Myron will usually be her s/o’s training partner. She dosent hold any knowledge or information back when teaching them how to fight, knowing how hard it can be for a women working with a bunch of snobby men. Because of this she will make sure she trains them as though they are capable of fanalis strength so her s/o better be prepared for some tough training ahead.

☛ Being adopted into the fanalis corpse itself ; Once Myron and Muu talk to Titus about the matter at hand, he will arrange for Myrons s/o to become the fanalis corpse personal battle strategist! The s/o should be prepared for numerous suffocating bear hugs, being swung around by Lo’lo and scolding off Muu for trying to arm wrestle with other members. ITS JUST SO TEMPTING! Despite knowing they could rip your arm off if they wanted to…

Myron will love the fact her s/o is in the corpse and will make sure she wears the correct armor. Myron will personally go out and get it, making sure it fits her s/o perfectly and accents her features. Since Myron wont allow her s/o to go out fighting with the fanalis corpse, she will at least make sure her s/o looks nice. The reason Myron wont let her s/o go with them is because the fanalis corpse are stronger and faster, and Myron wouldn’t want to leave her s/o behind in the middle of a mission. The female fanalis has to explain this to her s/o a lot, which leads to another point.

☛Myron trying to explain herself ; As previously mentioned, Myron dosent allow her s/o to go with the fanalis corpse on missions. This isn’t because her s/o is a human women, but because the fanalis have heightened speed and strength they can breeze through the mission with ease, and sadly cant have any set backs. Unfortunately for Myron, her s/o can sometimes perceive this as Myron thinking her s/o is to weak to fend for herself. “I wont be any trouble! I wont even fight with you! Just be on the sidelines in case anyone gets hurt!” “I’ve told you time and time again s/o! You cant be to careful in battle! Us fanalis can get kind of brutal, you know that?”

Arguments like this usually end up with Myrons s/o apologizing, realizing that her strength dosent quite compare to that of her significant others. Myron will gladly accept the apology and apologies herself, making sure to take you somewhere private where she can give cuddles and kisses. Making sure they feel appreciated after all their hard work for the corpse.

☛Suggestive conversations with Lo’lo ; Known to be a bit of a brute, Lo’lo will live up to that reputation for Myron’s s/o. He will constantly suggest some dirty things for Myron and his s/o to do, to the s/o. Knowing she wouldn’t be able to kick his ass as bad as Myron would. He likes to say. “Myron’s my friend. I like to make sure shes getting the…attention she needs.” But really he’s just an ass. Sometimes Muu joins in to, but obviously his teases arn’t sexual considering its his baby sister. The upside to this is when Muu hears Lo’los crude words he will scold the fanalis.

“Heeeeeeyyyyyyy s/o~” Lo’lo hums causing Myrons s/o to groan in annoyance. “Lo’lo please don’t start. I’m trying to strategise on how to invade-” “Myrons pants?” “LO’LO I SWEAR TO SOLOMON!” Sniggering the taller fanalis decides to make matters worse by wiggling his eyebrows causing the s/o’s face to burn a bright red. “Myron and s/o, sitting in a tree. K.I.S.S.I.N.G.” Whining in annoyance, the s/o groans lower when Muu walks in smirking. “Stop teasing s/o Lo’lo, shes just shy that we spotted her and Myron kissing just a few moments ago~” Laughing loudly, Lo’lo asks. “Hey s/o! Giving or getting? I bet Myron gives real good.” Pausing, s/o peers to Muu who is giving Lo’lo a death glare before he murmurs. “Run…”

☛ Becoming close friends with Muu ; Since Myron and Muu are brother and sister, Muu enjoys getting to know his siblings soul mate. He will arrange to meet with Myrons s/o and talk to them at certain times in the day just to share some wine and talk about Myron. He enjoys hearing about all the funny stories you have of her and will share some of his own of Myron to.

When Myron finds out about this daily occurrence she is at first happy that both her s/o and brother are becoming close. In fact, one time she snuck over to hear what the two were talking about. Then she was no longer happy. Why are they talking about her as a baby and about how she sometimes buys her s/o flowers but becomes so nervous she crushes them in her fist? Myron does everything in her power to try and stop this monstrosity of a meeting.

☛Trying to locate other fanalis ; Knowing most of the fanalis in the corpse were slaves, Myron’s s/o tries her best to save and recruit more for the cause, knowing that not only are they powerful and able to help Reim, but they need a new place to call home with a loving family of their species to welcome them. It’s only fair since the fanalis corpse decided to do that for Myrons s/o right? Not only would she be saving lives but helping those who helped improve her own life.

The fanalis corpse are very grateful for this and all thank Myrons s/o with hugs and words of praise. Myron is especially pleased with her s/o. Telling her that if she ever needs any help that she can always come to her. Myron will also buy her a gift as thanks, telling her s/o it means a lot she cares for her race just as much as herself.

☛The other corpse finding out and not being so happy ; At first it will be small things, like items going missing and returning the next day slightly broken in some way. Myrons s/o will barley notice at first until it gets as bad as a few threats written on paper, telling her how “associating yourselves with those beasts is unforgivable” She’ll try to keep it on the down low, being told if she tells them that they’ll kill her and for a month or so it works, she stays silent.

After a while the fanalis corpse will notice the change and ask Myrons s/o about it, wondering if there was anything wrong. When “No im fine” became a mantra for Myrons s/o, Myron would take it upon herself to inspect her s/os room. Upon finding the broken pile of jewelry and letters Myron will tell Muu privately so all hell dosent break loose. Muu and Myron both deal with it accordingly. No one messes with Myrons s/o and gets away with it.

Some went straight to the dorms to unpack their stuff and to see their new roommate, others went to the cafeteria to chat and have some lunch. Andrew walked trough the hallway trying to find his room.140,142,144, ah there it was, room nummber 146. He put the key in the door and opened it, he tossed his bag on the ground. The room was huge, it had a tv, sofa, bunk beds, everything. Andrew sat on the sofa, it was really soft. He wonderd who his roommate would be, on that exact moment he heard the door open, and a familiair walled trough the door.

"What are you doing here?!"

"Are you my roommate?!"

The two boys looked shocked at eachoters, but that seemed to changed quickly

"This is awsome i can't believe we are actually roommates!"

"I can't get rid of you, can I, Noah?"

"What can i say, we're bound for life"

They gave eachother a strong hug and Noah tossed his bag on the top bed

"That one is mine"

He walked over to the sofa and sat down next to Andrew

"How are you doing, Noah?"

"Great actually"

"Good to hear, i always saw you as my family you know"

"Oh i know, youre my bro. But how are the Montini's?"

"Yeah fine, mom worried, dad proud, little bro happy guz he gets my room, and my other bro is right here, what more could i ask for?"

Andrew said sarcastically. They sat for a little while and talked to catch up with eachother, not a lot has changed, not that they know of at least. Noah stood up

"I need a walk. Why don't you unpack youre stuff while im gone?"

"Yeah, good idee"

Noah was walking through the Montcoln Forest, he had his sword with him. He was practicing some moves by a old tree. Than he stoped for a seconde, he heard something, but he coudn't place it. He closed his eyes, trying to focus on the sound.

*thump* *thump* *thump*

it was coming closer, and faster, it was such a familiar sound.

*thump* *thump* *thump*

Then it hit him, it was running! The sound, it was someone that was runni-

*BAM*

A girl his age with beautiful brown blond hair runned into him, they both fell to the ground, hard.

"Auw, gods, why are you running?"

But before he could get up properly, she took his hand and pulled him along

"We need to hurry, there close"

"What? Who's close? Who are you?"

They runned as fast as they could, even though Noah didn't know what he was running away for. They ran so fast that the girl did not see that there was a tree stump in front of her, causing her to stumble and scrape her knee. Noah knelt beside her but quickly got up again when he heard a growl in the distance, he took his sword and looked around to see where it came from. The girl got up and stood with her back against his and grabbed her two daggers. they were surrounded by creatures that look like large dogs but with 4 eyes, very large teeth and sharp claws, they were hideous creatures. One creature attacked and jumped towards Noah, but Noah soon ran his sword through the creature's throat. She took her daggers and jumped at another creature and quickly killed it. They where both cut up in the fight, and it was going great, most of the creature's where dead by now, but then a enormous one showed up, it was probably the aplha male of the pack and he did not look so happy. The huge dog like creature jumped at the gril and pinned her to the ground, he was ready to shred her into pieces. The girl shut her eyes thight, not wanting to see the ugly creature on top of her but when it took to long for the pain to come she opend her eyes to see a sword straight trough the skull of the creature. Noah pulled his sword out, but it broke in two when he did

"Could have expected that"

He said while he inspected his now broken sword. The gril stood up and wiped her clothes

"I guess i'll have to thank you for that"

"Ha, i guess so"

"Well, thanks"

She said while rolling her eyes

"You gonne tell me who you are now?"

"I'm Skylar, Skylar Morse"

"Noah Wilson, what where you doing out

here?"

"I was practicing, till those 'things'

showed up, and attacked me"

"Those 'things' are called Onyx Hounds"

"Nice to know, i guess"

She rolled her eyes once more but looked at him with a kind smile on her face, then she saw the broken sword in his hand and the smile faded

"Youre sword, i know someone who can

fix it, Evan"

She said with a grin and raised an eyebrow

"Yeah sure, why not"

He said and they walked back to the camp. When they where just out of the forest Noah saw Skylar's knee

"You oke? Youre knee looks nasty"

Skylar looked down at her knee and shruged

"O its fine"

"No, let me help"

Noah ripped his sleeve and rapped it around her knee

"Thanks, again"

"No problem, princess"

She rolled her eyes and they kept walking, and walking, and walking. Noah was looking up, Skylar looked at him with a questioning face, he looked so admired. She looked the same direction he was looking at, he was looking at some birds, but these dirds had something magical, they where beautifull. Skylar looked back at Noah, who was still gazing at the birds, his face was illuminated by the light of the sun that fell on his face through the autumn leaves, his eyes sparkled and his mouth was shaped with a small smile.

"Why are you so happy to see some birds?"

She asked, he didn't even look at her while he answerd the question

"You'll see"

She raised an eyebrow at the unexpected answer, then she heard a song, it was like angels where singing. The birds flied over there head, one was so close to the ground it flew between them. It was incredibly beautiful. When they where gone and the singing faded she looked once again at Noah, who to her surprise, was looking at her to this time

"They where my parents favorite birds"

"I get that, they where amezing"

"Yeah, they are"

Noah closed his eyes and let out a little laugh. Noah looked back at her and they stared at eachoter for a while but kept walking. When they reached the dorms, Skylar was walked inside dorm nummber 173

"Evan i need youre help, well, he needs youre help"

A blond guy who sat at his desk turned around, he had safety goggels on but changed them with his normal glasses

"And who is he?"

"Im Noah Wilson, nice to meet you, Evan, right? Skylar here said you could fix my sword"

"Completely mutual, and ofcourse i can, let me see"

Noah handed over his sword and Evan inspected it, he pushed his things aside and put it on his desk

"I can make it much better than it was, just some upgrades here and here, and maybe some improvements on the blade to make it cut faster"

he took pen and paper and started sketching

"What do you think?"

Evan held up his sketch proudly, and Noah would lie if he said he wasn't impressed, that boy could draw. Now he only needed to actually make it

"I think its awsome, but can you really do that"

"Ha, are you serious? Like i said earlier, ofcours i can"

He took some stuff out of his drawers and hang his sketch on the wall in front of him

"Give me an hour or five and im done"

Skylar and Noah headed out but before Noah was completly out the door he turned around and said

"Hey Evan, thanks"

"Yeah yeah, no problem"

Two girls where running trough the hallways. One had golden hair and light green eyes, the other had dark brown hair, brown eyes and beautifull dark skin. They stoped for a door that said 'control room'

The blond girl got on one knee and took a paperclip out of her backpocket

"Why don't you just try the door knob, Avelyn?"

Avelyn got back up and sighed

"Uugh, fine"

The door opend and the two girls looked at eachoter in suprise

"I was joking when i said you should try the door knob, you know"

"Why is it open? It shouldn't be open!"

Micheala took Avelyn's wrist and pulled her inside the room. Once they where inside they saw a dark figure sitting on the chair before the control screens. The chair turned around and a boy with black hair was revealed

"Whoaaa, who are you? I'm sorry i don't want any trouble, im Lucas Auclair"

"No don't worry, we are not here to hurt you, im Micheala and this is Avelyn"

Micheala said with a kind smile on her face, to show the boy she meant no harm

"Yeah al nice, what are you doing here?"

Avelyn said crossing her arms

"I was looking at the monitors, i like to know whats going on, and i heard some rumors so i checked it out"

"What rumor?"

"Something about an-"

EOYR 2017: K-Dramas Part 1

I couldn’t do all the dramas I wanted to talk about (in depth) in one post. So here is the first one.

For this list, these dramas are decent. They are not the cream of the crop, and they all have issues. But for some reason (hint: it’s usually chemistry), at the end of the year looking back, I still love them.

So here, in no particular order. I decided to make a different format than my song stuff, because of course I should. So I borrowing a little bit from Dramabeans, and a little bit from Josei next Door (both of whom (or whoms? since Dramabeans is a bunch of people) do great work).

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon:

In A Sentence: Do Bong Soon is super strong, thus shenanigans ensue (and maybe some romance).

Steer Clear If: You cannot suspend disbelief (cause oh boy) or if you expect this to be your new feminist drama. It is not.

Comments:

There are some extraordinary parts of this drama. Namely Park Hyunsik throughout, though the lead Park Bo Young does some good work too. The romance is squee worthy in a lot of places. And it hits the notes you want from superhero dramas. It is really fun to have a beta male who is so in love with the lead, and doesn’t fear her strength quite as much as get turned on by it. Again, Park Hyunsik kills it, his face in this whole drama is both meme worthy as well as an epiphany for his acting skills. Some of the humor is also really good (the sandbags always get me, as well as the high school gang), and if you like low brow humor, there is quite a bit of that as well. Also, the soundtrack has the superpower girl sound, which is great, is one of the few songs that I remember from a drama well enough to sing it in my head without any prompting.

Then, there is the rest of this show. Boy is it a train wreck. There is a serial killer plot line that could be really good in a different super hero show (maybe Blade Man?), but is absolutely jarring. Jisoo plays a second lead that is never more than half-dimensional character. There is a caricature of a gay man played only for humor. There is some very possibly manipulative behavior from the lead guy to the girl. There is mentioned abuse between the mother and father, which is also played for comedy. There is a whole lot of stuff that makes me very unhappy with this show.

But then I remember how much I was crying while Ahn Min Hyuk refused to leave Do Bong Soon on the roof to die. Or how much it hurt every time Ahn Min Hyuk’s family was mean to him. Or how much I loved how confident Do Bong Soon was, and how much she fell from that, every once in a while.

And it reminds me that for all its faults, this show still managed to make me care. And that this year was quite a feat.

Age of Youth 2:

In A Sentence: The girls are back (for the most part), with more of the hi jinks of college, and life just after.

Steer Clear If: You like dramas that don’t disappoint you at the last possible second. Or you haven’t seen the first season (do it, it’s better).

Comments:

I love a lot about this series as a whole, and this season kept a lot of that up. Even if I had to fight with everyone else for subs. Han Yeri’s plot line still makes me very happy, even as she navigates another incredibly hard job this season. It makes me wonder why she isn’t in more dramas every year with how well she does. Han Seung Yeon’s character got her happy ending and it felt deserved. Kim Min Seok was the treasure we all know and love from Descendants of the Sun, this time cuter and more honest. Lee You Jin was also an epiphany this season, doing better in the role of awkward and uncomfortable in your own body than I think Onew would have. Choi A Ra’s character was one of the more background characters for me in remembering the show, but stands out for how she related to Kim Min Seok.

You may have noticed some names missing. The first, the first year couple from the first season, suffered from a recast and a re-characterization that also made no sense to me. No wonder he broke up with her as she went straight down the line to crazy town (she was literally being a stalker/overly attached ex through half the season).

Then comes my biggest gripe. There is AMAZING chemistry for the whole season (and a lot of last season) between Im Sung Min (Son Seung Won) and Song Ji Won (Park Eun Bin). We have all been waiting for them to get together for 2 WHOLE SEASONS!!!!! And what did the show do? Dangle the relationship in front of us, and leave us with NOTHING at the end. NOTHING!!!!!!!!

In the end, there is a lot to love about this show. I think this season especially gave us incredibly relatable women, and quite a few swoon worthy men as well. It enforced the community around the first season and helped it grow (my favorite part of the community is the subber who does the English subs on the JTBC Drama YouTube channel, they are amazing). And it showed us that everyone has similar problems to us, and deals with them just as poorly as we do.

While You Were Sleeping:

In A Sentence: A girl can’t stop the future deaths she sees in her sleep, but maybe with some help she can.

Steer Clear If: You expect things to always makes sense (cause they don’t) or you expect a procedural to keep you interested in the week to week plot (it really isn’t all that great)

Comments:

While You Were Sleeping is two different shows smashed into one. One of the shows, the rom com starring Suzy and Lee Jong Suk, works always and forever because their chemistry is adorable. The other show, a crime procedural about a girl who can the the future deaths of others? I really really really want it to work, and it is a bummer that it doesn’t really work all that well at all.

The plot is convoluted as all get out. And more importantly, it’s sort of boring in a lot of parts. Or maybe it just isn’t for me. Maybe I just don’t care about the inner workings of law in Korea.

But, if you leave the plot out, and instead look at the directing and the characters, it is a good drama. There is a whole lot of great emotional punches, most if not all of which hit. There is a great plot about brotherly love. There is a great plot about a guy and a girl just being friends, and the guy for the most part doesn’t get bent out of shape about the fact that she doesn’t have feelings for him. And most of the show, he really doesn’t have feelings either.

And there is Suzy and Lee Jong Suk’s characters, whose personalities are both half confidence, half embarrassing misunderstandings. It makes for prime rom-com territory. I especially like all the times they put their respective feet in their mouths. It had me laughing every time.

And the emotional hits do well too, with tears when it was appropriately sad, and laughter when it was funny. What more can you ask for from your entertainment.

I rewatched most of this show in preparation to write this. And at first, I could not realize why I remember only liking this show. It was so good. It hits all my favorite rom com notes: witty banter, respect between the two leads (both of opinions and often emotions), characters that call each other out (or even themselves in the case of the lead women stalking the lead guy), and everyone else shipping them too.

But then the 3rd act happens. And there is a whole lot of crap. There is noble idiocy. There is characters holding things back from each other. There is Ji Chang Wook being a badass (the only highlight of this section). There are characters suddenly acting differently for no other reason than it makes the plot work. It goes off the rollers.

But the first 30 or so episodes? They are pretty amazing. There is a friendship between a guy and a girl! And there is never a crush or love line between them! And they use that closeness to make the main guy jealous! Hell, he gives her chocolate for that purpose, or maybe just because he is legitimately nice.

Also, the funniest thing I have seen in a drama this year happened in this drama. There is a scene (mild but obvious spoiler) where the main couple reveals themselves to the moms. And the best friend and office guy (he has more personality than that I promise) pretend to be shocked. And I watched it over and over again, giggling every single time.

School 2017:

In A Sentence: It is hard to succeed in a high school ruled by money and grades, but damn it Ra Eun Ho is going to try!!!

Steer Clear If: You aren’t a fan of the school series, or high school dramas in general, because this uses all of the tropes, good and bad.

Comments:

School 2017 is a return to form of the School franchise after the train wreck of 2015 (I didn’t watch 2015 because I waited long enough for it to have bad reviews and thus stop me from watching). And boy does it do the return well. It has the romance you want from a school drama, adorable and cute in every way, as well as the bromance we all loved from School 2013. It has the wonderful discovery of Kim Sejeong in a role that she absolutely destroyed at, and most of the rest of the young cast also doing super well (I liked Kim Jung Hyun a lot and Min Sung Wook was rudely underutilized).

My one and only problem with School 2017 is that it wanted to do just a few too many plots. It meant that they couldn’t go very deep into any of them. I loved most of the plot, but I can’t fully get behind a series that never gets the full depth of everything. I especially didn’t like that the best friend got super shafted in her plot line, especially since she had some cute buildup in the beginning where they could have made some astute commentary about fan culture, and then they threw that away because they didn’t have time for it with the main storyline getting so complex and large. It was a waste of what could have been a cute part of the show.

But, School 2017 is still a good show, with endearing characters. It reminded me of Sassy Go Go in the best way possible. It made me remember high school fondly, which is hard to do, and exactly what I want from this franchise.
