I will simply NEVER shut up about how each of the Crows have a parallel character who then foils them in other ways.

Nina and Jesper are both outgoing, flirtatious characters who struggle with addiction. However, Nina's addiction was something she induced to save herself and the others, and something she knew she would have to fight to overcome. On the other hand Jesper spends most of the books in denial of his addiction, and it has dire consequences (Inej's stabbing and his father's farm being put at risk.) They are both Grisha, something that has had a devastating impact on both of their lives, however, Nina was able to grow up learning to harness her powers and Jesper was taught to fear his instead.

Matthias and Inej are both faith-driven people with strong beliefs. However, where Inej's beliefs have made her stronger and positively guided her decisions, Matthias' have made him full of hatred and eventually lead him to his death. Their respective romances cause them to go against part of their beliefs, or, in Matthias' case, completely unlearn the prejudices that he used to justify through his beliefs. They also both arrive in Kerch a captive and spend their first few months there imprisoned in some way.

Wylan and Kaz are the only characters who grow up in the same country, and while their class differences mean they begin their lives in very different ways, this does not stop them from arriving in the same place. Both of their stories in the Barrel begin with them narrowly escaping death, dragging themselves out of a canal and simply making the decision not to die no matter what the cost. Morally they are starkly opposite, with Wylan being the only Crow to blatantly confront Kaz on his actions and motives throughout the series. They are both quick-thinkers and good liars. By the end of Crooked Kingdom, Wylan begins to match Kaz' intelligence when it comes to 'criminal mastermind' thinking. They are also the only Crows who subvert expectations from their own POV, making you think they've failed when actually that was the plan all along. (They also have the same number of 'WANTED' posters in that one scene in CK.)

Another thing that seriously bothers me abt the show is that they’ve also cast per haskell for season two and that annoys me bc so much of the reason that kaz’s character and kanej were as butchered as they were in the show was to work around the implications of making kaz leader, and the fact that they decided to add per haskell in anyway just shows that they could have done that before and that they completely changed their characters for literally no reason. I think maybe the article mentioned that per haskell might be in a flashback, so they’re going to have kaz take over the gang before even the events of the ‘prequel’ (which like, makes his character so much less compelling honestly), but like, if they’re going to fit so much backstory in anyway they honestly could have put the whole per haskell thing in the present timeline in the show

Yeah there was 0 reason for us to see Pekka Rollins but not Per Haskell. My theory is that Kaz is a very tiny gang leader right now (.... in fact I don't remember the Crows being referred to as a gang except by Freddie in an interview. Jesper calls him "boss" but that could be in a job sense) so he chooses to join the Dregs to get more credibility. Idk man. They messed up.

04/07/2022: Inej returns miserable from the sea; Kaz helps her wash-up and sleep

Kaz found her perched atop the attic window, dried tear tracks evident on her face.

She had docked in Ketterdam this morning. But she neither paid a visit to the Van Eck mansion nor ventured around the city as the Wraith. She didn't do any of her routine activities.

He locked the door and went to the bathroom he'd got installed in this place a few years ago. Turning the two spigots of the bathtub, he set the water temperature to slightly warm and returned to the main room.

Inej was still sitting by the window. Something grave must've happened at the true sea to have left her so.

Kaz propped his cane by the desk and shrugged off his leather gloves and coat. He undid the cuff links on his shirt and rolled up its sleeves. Then shutting his eyes, he breathed deeply to brace himself for the upcoming contact.

The waves didn't lap at him anymore. Especially not when he touched Inej. But he still chose to take extra precautions.

He walked up to Inej and picked her up. She didn't flinch or show any signs of discomfort so he carried her to the bathroom, shutting the door with his good leg.

Inside, he met her gaze once, silently asking permission. And when she nodded barely, he began to gently remove her clothes– her knives, the long coat, the quilted vest, a few more knives, the slip of a tunic, the pants and boots, and the underwear. He proceeded to untie her braid and threaded his fingers slowly through the hair to untangle the strands.

For a moment, Kaz stood bedazzled. Even though there were plenty of times he had seen her like that. Touched her like that. Done extremely unsaintly things with her like that.

Mentally berating and reminding himself what they were there for, he picked up Inej again and laid her in the warm water of the bathtub. He scrubbed off the grime and blood from her body and washed her hair. Through it all, Inej looked around occasionally but uttered no words.

Afterward, Kaz slipped her into one of his old shirts and carried her to the bed.

There, in the darkness surrounding the room, she curled into herself, head nuzzling his chest, and wept. Kaz felt the wetness of her tears soaking his shirt, her sobs reverberating through him into the hush of the night.

“They died, Kaz! Five little girls.” Inej cried painfully. “I couldn't save them all..”

Kaz wrapped his arms around her frame and drew her closer. He couldn't ask her to simply move on. How could he when he blamed himself for Jordie's death? For being small and weak? It was stupid to hold oneself accountable for things one couldn't control. But forgiving oneself for it, was equally difficult.

So instead, he assured her, “Inej, it's alright. I know you tried your best.”

She wept some more and Kaz could only hold her until sleep blessed their tired forms.

I have no creative talent so my contribution for kanej week day 4 (angels and demons) is simply an idea.

Instead of demon!Kaz and angel!Inej I present the complete opposite: Angel!Kaz and demon!Inej.

I don’t know, I just think it would be really funny. The two of them charged with roles that they just are not fit for.

okay. okay okay. so i just finished s1 of shadow and bone and started s2 (tho so far im only one episode in). and what can i say except im really into it? and also i now have a lot of feelings.

first of all i appreciate alina and mal being young and also naturally a bit naive but also not stupid? when they accused each other of not sending or reading the letters and then just, you know, talked and hugged it out instead of drawing out the drama? really neat. i love it. love seeing some healthy understanding. babies. and can i just say how graciously mal accepted the fact that alina was very obviously isolated and manipulated and didn’t blame her for it one bit? yeah. that hit me in the feels when i did not expect it bc frankly i mostly started watching it after seeing some unhinged kaz gifs.

and, uhhh. kaz. ouch and also wow. he’s now my son who has 72 mental illnesses and is banned from most public spaces. my man has committed murder fraud burglary and probably arson and looks like he hasn’t had a minute of good sleep in about at least seven years give or take a few months. he’s a badass he’s canonically disabled he’s a criminal he’s a poor little meow meow he’s a bastard he’s a traumatized kid in a neat little hat. love him. he needs all the hugs and can’t get one.

and can i just say that inej is so goddamn pretty? bc she is. knife wife. not to take away from her character and her own trauma. she’s badass before everything else. her killing the inferni that was about to fry kaz? breathtaking beautiful amazing. and yeah i can’t shut up about kaz but showing on screen that the cane is not just for show and cool points but a legitimate walking aid for him that he experiences chronic pain without is so. good. chef’s kiss. the way their relationship progresses hnnnngg. i believe in you. i’m not leaving you. good god. please let them just hold hands.

also. nina and matthias broke my heart. crying screaming throwing up. why couldn’t they get a happy ending. it was either court marshal for matthias or for nina and hell they looked so fucking happy and content eating waffles that for a moment i forgot their countries were actively at war. why. i choose to believe that in my head they’re together and free. nina’s banter with matthias was super sweet and you can see the moment it changes from hostile and acerbic to genuinely playful and this is tearing my heart out all over again.

also genya totally deserved better.
