#infantalization
Text
It makes me so happy when people talk about how attractive they find Abed Nadir or like make edits bc yayyy they're not infantalising him!! And also the show itself made a great job in not infantalising Abed! The only one who does infantalise him is Britta in s1 but she stops as she gets to know him.

On infantilization.
I am very open about both being autistic and ace to nearly everyone in my life, and most of my peers think of me as a sweet innocent baby who has never even heard of sex before when they first meet me. Once I realized this, I have made it a habit to occasionally drop in small bits of, shall we say, unexpected information about myself in conversations as time goes on.
This is especially amusing since most people are extremly shocked to even hear me curse for the first times.
I have been told very often that someone was surprised once I opened up more because they thought I was oh so innocent.
Which definitely not only comes from my autism and asexuality which, as I've said, I'm very open about, but also because of my sunny personality. This is the only downside I can see to recovering from depression by the way. Happy people are apperantly often not taken seriously. I have been so very happy and open and excitable this year, and I have lost count of how often people have told me straight to my actual face that I was acting like a child or that I had no idea of the real world or how to properly take care of myself.
Which sucks, obviously. I've had a few breakdowns about it.
I am however working on finding a balance between how I was for the last few years (extremely depressed and closed off) and how I am now. I am trying to tell people I hate the way they are treating me. I am trying not to care about hurting their feelings by setting simple boundaries anymore.
I am legally an adult, and I am tired of people acting like I'm not. I have agency. And yes, I often struggle with simple tasks. But that is because I am disabled, not because I am a child. I love being happy, but I am not the sunshine child you have to protect. I will tell you when I need help with something.
Stop. Sheltering. Me.

"Maturity doesn’t have a specific definition with check boxes to tick off. It’s common for people—especially people who are in few or no marginalized groups—to define maturity, functionality, happiness, and normality against their own standards, which they present as universal. Because of this, it’s common for people who consider sex and sexual attraction part of their adult lives to say, 'If you don’t have sexual interest, you don’t have an adult life.' Asexuality challenges this . . . and it should. Plenty of people who desire or engage in sex are immature. It doesn’t make sense to insist that someone must be immature if they don’t have or desire sex. Maturity is subjective, and how/when it manifests is highly individual... The huge amount of diversity in how adults find success and happiness should be acknowledged, even if some adults don’t seek out certain types of partnerships or certain kinds of intimate experiences."

Sorry but could I ask what you mean by the infantilization in the community?
Sure! I need to preface this with some background context as to this tumblr g/t community situation.
PART I: GT HISTORY LESSON: HOW THE KINK GOT KICKED
Tumblr media
As you probably know, pre-2016 the g/t tag was used indistinguishably from the macro/micro and kink-related tags. Then the great purge of tumblr kicked a lot of nsfw creators off the site, with most of stuff remaining being sfw and made by younger creators. This in turn led to stricter moderation of the sfw gt tags vs the nsfw gt tags to keep things safe, as the community was flooded with more and more minors and became less and less kink-oriented. (This was an important step obviously.)
AS AN INDIRECT RESULT, a lot of g/t content became targeted in a certain way— it became super-sweet, fluff-based, and catered towards minors (which is not inherently a bad thing, its just part of the story.) And, as we all know, the tumblr gt community is very small and thus all the creators have a lot of influence on each other. This leads us to:
PART II: THE SLOW RISE OF CHILD METAPHORS
Tumblr media
Now, g/t revolves around an inherent power difference between two or more characters. A lot of what makes up g/t content is the way that creaters play around with, subvert, or conform to that power difference.
For example, you have popular creaters like @chamomile-g-tea, who gets a lot of joy out of reclaiming femininity by making it something powerful (literelly), subverting traditional and stereotypical power dynamics in a relationship by embracing traditionally feminine giant characters.
So when g/t kicked out the kink, an interesting shift that happened was that instead of g/t dynamics being used as a relationship dynamic between lovers, people started using it to represent a relationship dynamic between a parental figure and a child.  (This, again, isn’t a bad thing on its own.) In fact, most of my g/t content as a teen was centered around this guardian/child dynamic as a way to cope with abuse in my own life.
The issue is, the community became so oversatured with parental/child metaphors, and so obsessed with the uwu-ification of tinies, that it started bleeding into something deeper.
PART III: THE RISE OF INFANTILIZATION
Tumblr media
Now what we have is a micro-community, heavily invested in isolating itself from its former nsfw connections, being fed a steady string of content that blurs the line between caretaker/child dynamic and lover/lover dynamics. You have a large amount of minors, and most of the adults that remain heavily limit contact, as they can sense the questionable-ness of interacting with minors in ways that involve power dynamics. What’s more, gt is so invested in trying to stay away from anything resembling adult content that we have a culture of content focused on innocence, child-like fear, and the resulting stories based on those topics. And what this all boils down to, and results in, is a lack of diversity in storytelling and tropes and the infantalization of certain content creators. For example, I’ve seen posts from people talking about the infantalization of POC, the infantalization of fat bodies, and the infantalization of other marginalized groups in the gt community and I think it boils down less to “intentional prejudice” and more “the community has that mentality towards EVERY character that someone creates.”
Which isn’t to say that the gt community is bad: its just to say that we could stand some storytelling diversity WITHOUT infantalization, is all. :)

I need folk to fucking *stop* adding in Oberon Martell and Tyrion Lannister to the “Pedro Pascall as found dad protecting child” category of TV.
Tyrion Lannister is *not* a fucking child, ffs. He’s an adult man, played by an adult actor. He does *not* fucking become a *child* because he is a disabled person, for *fuck’s* sake, and the show *never* in any way presents him as one.

I'm mtf I think and honestly some of the advice people give to ktf folks is so fucking infuriating. When we ask for tips on shaving we don't want some trite trash about how no one should feel the need to shave, when we ask for makeup tips we want makeup tips, were not stupid we understand that certain people are forced to shave or wear makeup and thus think negatively of them but those people went the ones asking are they? It's gotten to the point I can't trust anyone but another transfem with help with dysphoria or style or whatever. It's so isolating and infantilizing and frustrating. How can you see a post about me wanting to hurt myself because of my filthy fucking body and think that a sentiment I've heard a million times before will suddenly help me and not make me feel worse and guilty for trying to feel good about my body?

the angry reactions surrounding that article about self-infantalization are so fucking ironic to me.
like the immediate assumption that, rather than focusing on the emotions that draw us to childish things or make us vulnerable to capitalist techniques such as nostalgia bait, or functioning as a call to action to be conscious of why one may be drawn to childish things or other things generally denoting self-infantilization & learned helplessness to better be able to take responsibility for oneself & take care of others in a late-stage capitalist society, it was about how you’re a facist if you like childish things…
the abject denial of personal responsibility for the choice to engage with more childish content based on someone criticizing why that engagement may be happening, & the outside factors which influence it…
the idea that someone stating consuming soulless corporate attempts at storytelling based on fluffy personal enjoyment may have ethical consequences means you may never consume a childish or “cutesy” piece of content ever…
hello folks, do you not see how you, step-for-step, are playing out the exact phenomena laid out in that article?

getting up on my soapbox for a moment. i find it laughable that nearly every time someone says they don’t like rap they cite hamilton and k-pop as the only rap they can tolerate. because everything else is just so violent and full of blatant consumerism. first off. so is k-pop. secondly. idk how to tell you the founding fathers were some of the most violent people around (coming from a black american descentant of slaves who is most likely related to thomas jefferson. shouldn’t have to explain the relevance here). thirdly. hamilton and k-pop both reference and interpolate rap. so idk what to tell you babes. you do like rap. you just don’t like black people. say it with your full chest next time.

Thank you for answering my question! Could you elaborate on the blurring of the lover dynamic and caretaker dynamic? And how to avoid it if possible?
Np! Glad to help!
The issue isn't so much that a lover can't also be a caring figure— the issue is more with the infantalization. Ask yourself, is your uwu tiny comfort cute character actually a good character? Is there nothing else you can give them, especially if they're from an often-infantalized community, like ppl with autism, or fat ppl, or a racial minority? Is their whole dynamic to act childlike? Why? Is it a romantic story? Does your character act their age?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with childlike characters— but figuring out how to add depth to them, and exploring more interesting storytelling dynamics, and doing more with gt than just uwu tiny cute, not only benefits your writing and storytelling but also the community as a whole.
