TBB S3 E10 Reaction

Life has been a bit busier the last few weeks so I am finally catching up on my episode reactions (I’m determined to do all of them this season!) And I apologize y’all, this episode made me very snarky apparently.

I’ll be honest. When this episode first came out I was nowhere near as surprised by it or horrified by it as reviewers seemed to be. Nothing about Palpatine hunting down force sensitive children as experiments and using Cad Bane to do it is a surprise, and the Vault feels so much like Andor. But even on a rewatch this episode holds up so well and honestly just starts to give a cold chill under the skin as the quiet horror of it sinks in.

- Cute kid. And the Batch nowhere to be seen. This is going to be a different episode isn’t it

- Oh no. He’s force sensitive 😫😫😫 hmmm how could that possibly go wrong

This fully encapsulates the dynamic that these two have shared. Emerie knows that Hemlock only values things that are useful, and probably only sees her own value in the light of what she can contribute, due to how she was raised and the circumstances she has been trapped in. Hemlock’s tone of voice implies that he has never considered her as being the new chief scientist, and yet he acquiesces quite quickly, almost as though he’s just too busy to think about it and if it means things are brought back up to production standard then he’s fine with it. His utter disregard for Emerie as an actual human and someone with merit is disgusting though.

- But I get it, the man’s busy, he’s got a lot of evil shit he’s trying to do all at the same time 🙄

- So we have “the assets”, which is the area that Hemlock took Palpatine in the first episodes, where the orange containment pods are and the zillo beast is being kept. We still don’t know what those assets are. The Vault is something different.

- The little peeks of Emerie’s backstory we keep getting are so interesting. She was abandoned by Nala Se. She knows that these children don’t belong here, the same way that Omega told both her and Crosshair that they didn’t belong here either. Nala Se says that the Empire will hold these kids to control them. Emerie feels like she has no power to do anything differently. So much to unpack here.

- Why is Tarkin’s holo so large?

- Lol I honestly love getting to see the backbiting politics of how the Empire functions. It’s so bad and so funny

Just found this in my docs! Apparently I wrote down my reaction when I first listened to Ulysses Dies At Dawn last november, soooo :D

Started listening to Ulysses Dies at Dawn by The Mechanists. First song is The City, let's gooo (19:44).

Just finished listening to Ulysses Dies at Dawn. Oh, shit, I just realised why the album is called that, fuck. My heart. His death was simultaneously heartbreaking, peaceful, and triumphant. I had no idea it was going to end like that. Amazing (22:24).

Ok, some rambling about it before I re-listen with lyrics:

The whole idea of trials, and each character's backstory getting introduced with them is cool. It lets the mystery soak for a bit, giving breadcrumbs out, and letting each character have time to breathe.

I like how the blind guy is almost exclusively referred to as "that motherfucker" XD. Ironic.

Ok, but the sphinx disease is legitimately horrifying. Wow, the Olympians are just straight up villains in this huh.

I think Daedalus has the coolest vibes (apart from Ulysses) 'cause he's just so smooth all the time. Calm and collected and unconcerned... until the end when Ulysses switches it up on him lol.

The line "Currently beaten, battered, bloody... Unbowed. Spits out a mouthful of teeth and disdain" perfectly encapsulates Ulysses' character. I love it.

Ulysses being this super smart inventor tactician dude is awesome. I was stunned by the Trojan Horse twist. Broken Horses was amazing, I had literal chills. Interestingly, it almost reminds me of Hell’s Comin’ with Me by Poor Man’s Poison? Also, the signal Ulysses designed for the Trojan Horse sounds a lot like the V-Day signal in Kingsman. Brutal.

The beat to My Name is No-One sounds like an alarm, like how False Peace by Precious Jewel Amor utilises the prison alarm as percussion, which is very cool. And the song is hilarious. Just waltz in, it'll be fine :D Love the way it fades out after he gives his name away, ending on an unresolved note a lot like in Remember Them from EpicTM. Yo, speaking of Epic, I kinda love how the electric guitar in this song unintentionally mirrors the way Odysseus in Epic has the electric guitar as his instrument when he’s doing badass shit.

And then Ulysses going from idealistic to traumatised, and you don't even see the extent of his hope for the world until right at the end, when it's already gone. Like, shit bro.

Love how even though he spends like- almost the whole thing being drunk and getting beaten up, he still always seems in control somehow. The only time he isn't is in Underworld Blues when he's begging to Hades. I'll have to relisten to that to figure out what he wanted, actually. It was a bit unclear. Did he just... want Hades to kill him or smth? Make sure his brain wasn't on the network? Yeah, I'll need the lyrics.

The twists on all the lore are honestly so great. From mythical and magical, to futuristic and mechanical. You can clearly see the real world myths all their backstories come from.

That simple, blunt "No" from Ariadne was great.

I love how in Torn Suits all of the mercs are singing about why they can't die, and how they're going to use the money to escape the City's hold on them. By running, or paying off debts, or taking a loved one back, or ruling it. But then Ulysses kills them and willingly dies himself, giving his body to the earth and escaping the City more fully than they ever could. Hell yeah, fuck them.

As soon as I heard the password was 'Elysian', I knew it was something about death. His death. And something about it will be peaceful. I was right.

And ARGOS!! The doggo reunites with his human, and yeah he still dies, but Ulysses practically goes with him! Also, are dogs extinct in this world, like horses? Did Ulysses manage to find the last tree and the last dog?? Damn, dude. Mad skillz.

Bro, I was wondering where Penelope was going to fit into all this, 'cause in The Odyssey, practically his entire life purpose is to get back to her, but here there was... nothing stopping him I thought? I thought either he was in huge debt to someone and was stuck in a completely different sector than Penelope, or he was staying away out of guilt and shame over his actions in the war. But then it's revealed that he is trying to get back to her... in death. Like, fuck bro, that's really fucking sad. Dude's been passively or actively suicidal for the past few decades, and then he finally gets to rest with her... Fuck, man. Hits hard.

Ulysses sounds a lot like Joel from The Last of Us games when he sings softly. It helps that Elysian Fields is literally just Wayfaring Stranger lol. Also gives the same feeling as the endish part of AC: Valhalla, after he talks to the king and rides away and Twilight of the Gods starts playing.

The cover art is so cool, as well. And the last ones? The plain wooden table, bare of any media or research or advertisement. So good. No more secrets. No more lies. The truth, laid out in the open, plain as can be. Nothing more, nothing less. And then the vault, blood splattered enemies dying, grasping for artificial life in the cold grey, while Ulysses lies under the living tree, surrounded by sunlight and green with his loved ones, at peace with his death. Amazing imagery.

The drums at the end of Elysian Fields are like a funeral march or the drums that play on Anzac Day. So good.

Okay, I think I've written all I wanted to say, so imma go read the lyrics now (22:56).

(1/2) I had a somewhat of a different reaction to the couch scene, it did make me somewhat uncomfortable to see Shu Yi struggling against Shi De but to me it’s not like Shu Yi didn’t want what was happening per se, to me that scene was again about control and Shu Yi not wanting to lose (control) against Shi De and give in to him, but in the end he did because he does love him.

when i say im uncomfortable with the scene, i say it from a reality standpoint, not from a character standpoint.

although i said time and again that im against the noncon/dubcon element of the scene before it even airs, i also admitted that i won't be, and am not, surprised that Shi De forced a kiss on Shu Yi. heck, i personally wrote a fic for this scene (before its airing) where Shi De forcefully kisses Shu Yi and leaves hickeys on him. in the fic, Shu Yi even admits, to himself, that he wants all that Shi De's doing to him and even touches Shi De in return.

so yeah, my real life stance on the couch scene? noppity nope bcs ofc my view on life would bleed into what i find acceptable in the media i consume.

my view on the character & plot of the scene, on the other hand? it makes perfect sense.

everything is very in character of them both… from the way Shi De wept quietly and in a controlled manner to the way he quickly try to gather himself soon after (he's always been the type to have a tight rein on his emotions and deal w/ everything on his own). meanwhile, Shu Yi being aggressive and pushing back just as hard is also just a part of who he is (he's always give back as good as he gets and he's always been demanding and a bit selfish).

and i totally agree w/ ur interpretation of Shi De's motivation + Shu Yi's reaction.

i love Shi De very much but he's a problematic lil shit who doesn't understand boundaries and it's so in character of him to pull that shit.

as for Shu Yi + control, yes... ive also talked about how everything in their relationship has always been on Shi De's terms… this is nth new. this is just Shu Yi seeking to be in control of the situation. also, i think Shu Yi's also very adamant about getting answers™ about america (i will elaborate on this in a character study post, pls visit my blog later on if u’re interested in reading my word vomit lol)

just bcs i have issues w/ the scene from a morality standpoint doesn't mean i didn't enjoy it from a plot standpoint.

i like it. i rewatched it quite a few times trying to catch the details and nuances of the acting. i think it’s a good scene that encapsulates both of Shu Yi & Shi De’s personalities & showcase the creators’ & actors knowledge of & passion for the characters.

i just don’t want the noncon/dubcon element of the couch scene to be romanticized bcs that can be damaging to BL as a media as well as damaging to people’s perception of what’s acceptable in a romantic relationship.

You know what this constant Edelgard pity-party reminds me of? Probably the worst game I've played in some time - YIIK: A Postmodern RPG. One of your party members, Rory, will end up taking his own life if you choose wrong answers throughout the game. The protag ends up going on a way-too-long monologue about how much it affects HIM. It's both upsetting and enraging at the same time, look up "YIIK: The Worst Scenes" and bring the booze.

OOOOH MY GOD that's such a brutal fuckin' comparison but I can see it. I've seen a lot of videos of people talking about YIIK but those scenes in the videos were either briefly mentioned to make a point or, in the case of the second one, literally never mentioned. Hooooly shit is that bad.

But the thing is, that first scene makes perfect sense to be that fuckin' terrible! Shitty as it becomes when mixed in the overall narrative, the game creator's even said that Alex is supposed to be a self-centered, narcissistic piece of shit. He's a bad person. The reactions he has to things are supposed to come off as enraging and insulting. What goes on to ruin it is the shift of blame off of his shoulders for his actions and how he becomes the universe's literal most important person ever, but that first scene in a vacuum actually encapsulates just how much of a shitty guy Alex is supposed to be. Him making his friend's suicide - of which the gameplay dictates that he had a direct hand in due to his treatment (if you, the player, do certain things) of said friend - all about him and how he feels and how he's so sad that he was such a bad friend (to the point where Rory - the friend in question - has his name crop up a whopping two times in all of Alex's self-centered monologuing) is in character for the utter shitwad of a guy he's supposed to be.

He's ass! Terrible, horrible, no good very bad! But holy shit, yeah, Edelgard killing innocent people and then going on about how sad SHE is, how much of a hard time SHE has because of it, how she wishes SHE was a better person to not have to murder all of these people, gives off vibes startlingly close to that of a character that is literally meant to be a self-important, self-centered asshole. Up to and including the narrative trying to push all accountability of what they did off of their shoulders! "No Alex, I was gonna commit suicide either way, so you didn't really do anything that pushed me (even though I only do this if the player does specific actions so it literally is your fault)!" "No Edelgard, those people were going to suffer under Rhea's rule anyway and they died for THEIR beliefs, so you're not actually at fault here (even though you started a war that dragged in countless people who were literally not suffering at all and made them suffer too)!"

The main difference being that YIIK, at the bare fuckin' minimum, flat out admits that Alex isn't supposed to be a likable, good person (even if they also say that he grows out of that which LOL no he doesn't). At some point in Alex's character he is deliberately written to be the worst person ever (and not the unintentional worst person ever that eventually happens). Edelgard doesn’t even have that in this fic, really. The most we get is that she was “pragmatic” and “icy,” but even that is just... not true. We see, what, two moments of her behaving anything like that? Ever? During the prologue where she thinks of Byleth as a tool (for two seconds before admitting to herself that she doesn’t really think of her like that) and during the Remire chapter where she kills a TWS dude (which fuckin’ lmao, as if that counts for anything when the guy was about to gleefully murder a child). Otherwise, Edelgard is presented as the nicest, sweetest, most caring person ever, even though she is incredibly self-centered. So like, uh, yiikes

Whereas John the Breath player, just gets bogged down, hes totally out of his element

so it ends up being like John: “Id like to cling to some funny moments of my youth pls and try to lighten the situation up a bit because I cant do anything when so heavy”

this started out funny, but Karkat’s emotional rant just ended up being depressing not funny ):

I have to say though, it is REALLY interesting to see John’s depression manifesting in a very breathy sort of way

Karkat in these panels was more closer together, connected, but as John gets more and more depressed over the course of Karkat’s rant when he realizes Karkat doesn’t know dave died, the panels get seperated by lines of blue, and slowly drift off away from John and from eachother

but thats basically been hows its been manifesting all along

the more John feels Disconnected and Seperate from the reality he finds himself in, the more he finds his will untethered, the more depressed and unable to act he gets

and right now its so much so that even a fuller fledged Blood player is having trouble grounding him back down

I don’t know, I always viewed the depression metaphor as a dark watery void to sink into and feels heavy and encapsulating (but probably thats just my Light-y interpretation of it)

so its interesting to see the depression metaphor as this floating disconnection instead, so much that it leans towards derelaization/depersonalistion/dissociation as well

I wonder if John will start dealing with bouts of actual full blown dissociation as this gets worse?

I mean, Breath aspect has given the literal ability to ghost around wherever he pleases in all other ways, why not literally and physcologically as well?

So John seems to be fully overembracing his aspect here, to a very unhealthy degree here, which I see you asking “aha Dahni, but hes doesn’t have overblown self esteem here, quite the opposite, is this not an inverted state instead? or something else because hes acting like hes inverting to Breath?”

and I say not so! reader, for overembracing is the idea that through your aspect, your will is overwriting the wills of others, and in someone like Vriska, this manifests in a very selfish and over self esteemed way

but is not John’s will overwriting Karkat’s here? Through Breath? And isnt John also being a little selfish here? Considering how he feels about things, more important than how anyone else feels? How Karkat feels?

John is too dissociated to understand that this reality is Real and has Consequences he needs to care about, and Karkat is trying to fight against that, trying to instill his belief that no, this shit is real and it Matters Why Don’t You Care, trying to ground him, trying to give him that dose of Blood he needs

but John’s overembracing Breath is just, blowing that all away, its becoming too strong

Roxy in the epilogues dealt with this as well, when John was really in the shits with it and started to believe Roxy’s whole personality was somehow fake and his own construction, because he convinced himself Roxy would never choose to do the things she did, but Roxy was able to snap him out of it and make him understand and respect it was her own choices that led down his path, not the idea that John’s choices are somehow overriding everyones

But man, John sure is riding that Breath train way too hard, and he keeps snapping back into it as well

BnHA Chapter 249: Todoroki Taco Night

Previously on BnHA: Nothing happened at all, because the manga was on break last week! Fortunately the anime had finally resumed after a billion years (estimation; exact length of time may be slightly off), so we had that to take the edge off in the meantime. Except we didn’t, because the anime also ended up going on break due to a rugby game or some shit. So that was nice. On a related note, when I die I’d like the Basement arc to lower me into my grave, so it can let me down one last time.

Anyway, Endeavor did some mentoring and gave Shouto and Kacchan a power-up assignment and told Deku to work on Air Force to help him master the fine control he needs for the Bloop. Then Fuyu called a week later and was all “HEY DAD, DINNER, OUR PLACE, TONIGHT, BRING THE KIDS.” And then as previously mentioned, we waited two whole fucking weeks and MY GOD, my body is ready, on to the new chapter we go!

Today on BnHA: Shouto, Katsuki, and Deku are cordially invited to Todosmith Farms for an evening of food and fun! They make it approximately six minutes into dinner before Natsu loses it and exits with more theatrics than a spurned reality TV show contestant. Baku and Deku spend the next hour being all “!!!” at each other back and forth, and whispering about how fucking dramatic the Todorokis are, which fully kills me and is my favorite thing ever to happen in the world. Deku then begins to guide Shouto through his personal healing process like fucking Mufasa booming at Simba from the heavens, and meanwhile Endeavor listens in while quietly kneeling before HIS DEAD SON’S PHOTOGRAPH, IN THE SHRINE THEY BUILT FOR SAID DEAD SON IN HIS BEDROOM, and sorrowfully wishing he could do more for his family. Anyways so I’m in ruins now, but otherwise fine. How are you?

(All comments are my unspoiled reactions from my initial readthrough of the chapter. I did a quick edit for grammar and clarity afterward, and added a few ETAs in the process, but aside from that there are no changes.)

well it’s Thursday morning, and I have just seen the picture of baby white-haired Touya because no one in this fandom knows how to fucking spoiler tag (and that’s on me too for browsing the BnHA tag on a Thursday; I know better, but I was just curious how this new group chat thing was working out), so here are my immediate thoughts

we never actually confirmed that the hair color correlates to their powers, huh. we just assumed. but come to think, there’s no reason why someone couldn’t have mom’s hair but dad’s quirk. it’s all Shouto’s fault for being a perfect 50/50 split and thus making everyone assume that THAT’S JUST HOW IT WORKS. damn you Shouto and your dramatic character design

anyways I tried not to look at the pic for too long -- once I realized what I was looking at, I averted my eyes -- but he does look like Dabi, I think. oh shit guys. it’s really fucking happening

and I also didn’t get a good enough look to determine whether this was a photo of Touya (that Deku or whoever happened to spot while visiting the Todochester Mystery House for the much-hyped dinner) or a flashback image (in which he is just standing really fucking still for some reason and staring directly at the camera), so I guess we’ll see. but anyways, Deku and Kacchan didn’t come all the way down to Todoroki taco night to not have their evening peppered with intricate family drama and reopened wounds and hysterical conspiracy theories, so you had better keep them goddamn entertained! lord knows the Todorokis don’t do small talk. this is literally their only way of spicing things up so their guests don’t die of sheer awkwardness while Endeavor sits in stony silence and Shouto just stuffs his face with soba all night

Dialga: This question was pretty much inevitable.

Palkia: I’m honestly fine with being referred to as an “it”.

Giratina: Why the hell should we worry about “it” being “dehumanizing” when we’re not human to begin with?

Something that I knew would eventually get brought up is the genders of my interpretation of the trio. The simple answer is encapsulated in the prev post: they’re dragon gods. Gender is a societal construct; sex is for reproduction. Legendary entities that represent the fundamental laws of the universe don’t really have a need for either society or reproduction. So as with the games, they’re all officially non-binary/genderless.

That said, my designs gravitate towards one or the other. One reason is that i’m not creative, bold, inspired, or talented enough to really translate that genderless attribute into humanoid form. Another is that someone pointed out to me a while ago that Palkia has a low waist-hip ratio, stiletto clawed feet, and some designs will feature a more prominent chest. That and the gendered color-coding Pokemon started doing with blue males and red/pink females, like with the menu screens starting from Gen III, the Eon Duo, Jellicent in Gen V, and Team Skull Grunts in Gen VII. 

That said, I’m not a huge fan of these reasons, as you could also make the counterargument that Palkia looks somewhat phallic. So I kinda wanna get into an Extended Rant™ on why I choose to depict my OCs the way, even though no one probably cares lmao

It starts out with the Kanji/Hanzi for “Universe”: 宇宙, Uchū in Japanese and Yǔzhòu in Chinese. You might recall it if you’ve read Pokemon Adventures. 

You might also remember if you visited that one dude on Route 228 in Diamond and Pearl who gets yeeted out of his house by Cyrus’s contrite grandfather by the time Platinum rolls around. Okay, realistically, barely anyone probably does (that guy wasn’t that memorable), but he basically says the same thing as Cyrus in the panels above: 宇宙, coined by the ancient Taoists, esoterically means something like “the totality of extension” + “the totality of duration”. In other words, the ancient Japanese/Chinese word for “universe” is lit. “space” + “time”. This is actually a somewhat obscure, unnecessary detail that even many native speakers seem to be unaware of. It also ties in heavily with the Yin-Yang 陰陽 of Taoism.

I know Taoism is more a Gen V theme, but it’s a concept implicit throughout the franchise, hence games generally come in twos, sharing complementary/opposing or dualistic/dichotomic themes. Even trios tend to have the third member as the odd one out or mediator. There’s much more to the Yin-Yang than just Truth/Ideals and I sorta wish Game Freak would explore it more to really unite the franchise as a whole around the interconnected theme of both diversity and harmony.

The Yin-Yang isn’t strictly about Truth/Ideals as much as it is about the fundamentally dualistic nature of existence and the oneness implicit in the inseparability of coexisting complementary concepts. Thus, truth and ideals are two sides of the same coin, as are time and space as relativity revealed. The Yin-Yang is vague enough to basically be an umbrella representation term for any complementary duality. It should be noted that the feminine Yin and masculine Yang don’t refer to stereotypical/conventional notions of femininity or masculinity, but rather requires an abstract interpretation.

The Yin-Yang is composed of an active component, and a passive/reflective/receptive one. More easily understood in that one aspect creates the body and the other gives it life. One which shapes/nurtures/mothers being and one which animates/directs/fathers it. Abstract interpretations of the feminine Mother and masculine Father follow suit. As do dualistic concepts like particle and wave, existence and essence, ovum and sperm, object/entity and idea/concept, magnitude and direction, defense and offense, nature/tradition and technology/advancement (Gen I & Gen II), space and time (Gen IV), truth and ideals (Gen V), night/moon and day/sun (Gen VII), and shields and swords i guess (Gen VIII).

I excluded Gen III because among the classical elements, earth and water are both traditionally considered reflective/feminine, with fire and air being active/masculine, but i suppose if you factor in Primal Reversion in Gen VI, it works. With the Aura Trio, I read something unrelated but interesting about how apparently Ohmori Shigeru hinted at parallels between the Weather Trio and Aura Trio. Can’t find the source though. Blue - Seas were the first (Alpha) source of Life; Red - fiery, desolate Lands signify the Death of all in the end (Omega); Green - Order/Balance mediates between two forces of nature that can be malevolent/chaotic left unchecked, with the trio master possessing abilities that cancel out the other two. 

Going off the rails a bit more, speaking of color-parallels, there’s probably going to be one of the subtractive colors between Gen VIII and the (highly probable) Gen IV remakes this generation, with Cyan - Dialga, Azelf, Lucas’ accents, Za-cian; Magenta - Palkia, Mesprit, Dawn’s accents, Za-mazenta; Yellow - Giratina, Uxie, Barry’s accents, whoever the third member of the Gen VIII mascot/box art legendary trio is going to be. I wonder how they’re going to incorporate the parallels tho

Anyway I digress. The ancient Daoists associated feminine Yin with 宇/Space and masculine Yang with 宙/Time by virtue of insisting the feminine aspect precedes, but even disregarding that, Space fits in with the Yin criteria of that which represents the body and Time fits in with the Yang criteria of that which initiates life.

So while they’re genderless, Dialga represents the concept of masculinity and Palkia femininity in their most pure, abstract, and universal form according to the Dao. While this doesn’t make Dialga a dudebro and Palkia whatever the hell the feminine equivalent is, in my mind, Palkia has a strong maternal instinct and Dialga is very much a dad. Giratina is weird chaotic goth aunt/uncle who gives u ur first taste of alcohol just to spite grandpa and reads fanfiction with candles and a glass of wine like it’s a fucking literary hour.

That’s my logic and explanation behind it anyhow. The distinction goes something like Palkia will concern itself more with the state or properties of something (who, what, where) whereas Dialga will concern itself more with the role or activity of it (when, why, how). As time and space are, however, they’re deeply intertwined and cannot be separated.

I might move this bit to a separate post somewhere down the line since this has already dragged on long enough, but I’ll share some thoughts on Giratina here and tie it in with the overarching topic of assigning gender roles lol. According to Game Freak, Giratina represents antimatter, but there are some inconsistencies. I know this shit has to be taken with a grain of salt because of Pokemon logic/science and whatever, but I gave it some thought regardless. My personal headcanon is that Altered Giratina represents dark matter/energy and Origin Giratina represents antimatter. Whatever tf Gira represents in Pokemon lore is based on a combination of the two, with the Reverse/Distortion World probably alluding to the idea of an anti-universe. Antimatter and dark matter are not really the same thing, but they’re both trippy cosmic constructs that sound somewhat similar, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . I wanted to make a distinction because while antimatter doesn’t distort spacetime any more than normal matter, it’s speculated that dark matter (actually dark energy) does, and is responsible for the rapid expansion of the universe. 

This would also go along nicely with Gira complementing the the Spacetime twins while also complementing Arceus. It would also fit as justification for Giratina having to switch from Origin to Altered Forme upon entering the universe presided over by Dialga and Palkia, not because of the shift in spacetime stability, but rather due to the violent, annihilating reaction that occurs when matter and antimatter come into contact with one another. It’s by no means a perfect resolution hc, but it is one that I’ve gotten attached to.

Anyhoo, I designed Giratina to appear more androgynous (or at least attempted to). However, going by that masculine active/feminine reflective duality highlighted in the Yin-Yang, Origin Gira, with antimatter a reflection of normal matter, appears a bit more feminine-androgynous, whereas Altered Gira, with dark matter an active driving force for the expansion of the universe, appears a bit more masculine-androgynous (though iirc it hasn’t shown up yet and i’m not too great with consistency regardless). That was my idea behind it in any case. Origin Gira wears a binder under that big dastardly overcoat. i guess it’s technically genderfluid.

Digressing a bit, but another artistic choice was the skin tone of the trio. 0 points for subtlety on my part, but the color is Cosmic Latte, the average color of the universe. Like that bit on gender, I wanted to base it on some aspect of reality. I juggled between that and pure black with stars for freckles, but in the end i’m a lazy piece of shit who cuts corners for a living, so i settled on Primordial Clam Chowder because it was easier lmao. that’s why they pasty af

my Arrow 7x06 thoughts

That was... a heck of an episode. I spent 3/4 of it upsettingly confused and the last 1/4 of it utterly enthralled. That sort of encapsulates Arrow as a whole, doesn’t it? Like, your average Arrow season these days is 3/4 “what the hell is this all about” and 1/4 “ohhhh my god i get it now, that was AWESOME.” And while I love the awesome, I sorta wish there was more consistency and less relying on the ending to save the whole pie, ya know?

Ok some dramatic tension back now. I guess Cersei and Jaime are dead now.

Here’s how they can salvage this dramatic tension, First of all take some of that plot armor off of these major players and just bite the bullet and let Arya die. You could even make it a legendary tragic scene. One for the ages. Just milk it for all it’s worth because it’d def be worth 10000x whatever this is.  Like literally everyone else around her is burnt to a chalky crisp.  And yet she’s not only alive, but mostly uninjured. Not a single burn. Not a single broken limb.

If you insist on keeping her life. Pull an Eowyn. Arya becomes a maester. Realizes how silly war and violence are.

Is that Shadowfax. LORD OF THE HORSES. What does this scene have to do with anything? What does it mean? Did Arya request that horse on Lyft?

why eggscellent is the best rs episode

so you all know this episode is my #1 favourite in the entire show, and nothing you can say will change my mind. below i’ve written a pretty long, almost detailed, reasoning of why i hold this one in particular so close to my heart and i would put it under a read more, but again, tumblr on mobile is complete horseshit

so lets get on w/ the “review/rant/opinion piece” ;

i’m going to start at the argument scene between benson and mordecai. what i love most about it is how well recognised it is. i don’t exactly know how to put it bc of course it was “”“well recognised”“” since jg himself wrote the entire episode but…..it’s just such a tense moment already, and it becomes suddenly Worse when mordecai socks benson in the face

the entire argument between them is so emotionally charged and you’re not given a moment to ‘breathe’ until the next scene rolls over of mordecai ordering the omelette. the episode definitely deserved its’ emmy, but that scene ALONE is worth a lot of praise. it was so well written and it’s crystal clear jg /loved/ those two characters in particular

honestly……and i have absolutely no qualms typing this……..i truly think a flip switched on the show after this episode

for the first two seasons, it was really the viewers learning about who these characters are and the world built around them; us seeing the hilarious banter between mordecai and rigby (and others lol), and sure the first few episodes of the 3rd season did that, but when eggscellent aired…….it was an entirely different ballgame

the core of the show is really mordecai and rigby’s friendship; we see their antics through seasons 1 + 2 where it just exists w/ a lot of hilarity in the situations they get in. but nothing actually happened to showcase that friendship (and their characters) propery until ‘eggscellent’, where we were introduced to a truly dire situation where their relationship and mordecai’s character were put on complete display

in the earlier seasons, rigbys defining trait was that he fucks around and doesn’t bother with the backlash from it. mordecai’s defining trait was recognising the responsibility put on him and using that…….(there’s probably a better, more obvious trait, sorry but it illustrates my point plus it’s like 12:30am right now and i just want to get this out of my system lmao….)

in the episode, these traits take an absolute turning point in that it’s not all fun and games anymore; rigby does a completely idiotic thing that lands him in a coma and mordecai makes absolutely no hesitation in stepping up to the plate and making the right decision by doing what rigby now can’t

yes rigby still does fuck up in episodes (and seasons) after this and mordecai still has to stick up for him sometimes but that situation obviously made their friendship a whole lot stronger, and it made the audience extremely aware of the lengths mordecai will go for somebody he deeply cares about…..and that trait was shown countless times after this through various episodes. it made us come to the realisation of how important rigby is to mordecai and had us love their friendship even more bc of what mordecai was willing to do for him

bensons defining trait is his inability to put up with bullshit, namely mordecai and rigby’s bullshit. just as he comes to learn rigby could possibly not wake up from the coma, his IMMEDIATE understanding of the situation is “this is what your idiotic behaviour gets you. this is what happens when you don’t listen to me and this is a perfect fucking learning curve for you two”. and while mordecai can understand this to a certain extent, he still has no hesitation in punching him straight in the face for it bc now is not the time to bring this shit up, especially in the worst fucking situation imagineable and their argument starts from there before mordecai walks out

being on the outskirts of this relationship, benson only witnesses a fraction of mordecai’s caring nature for rigby. but what he doesn’t see or at least doesn’t exactly consider is the absolute compassion and responsibility mordecai feels when faced w/ a scenario where their screwing around takes on an entirely different set of circumstances. and it still doesn’t comprehend bc he’s never fully grasped the idea of them being two seperate people. yes he knows mordecai is capable of responsiblity, moreso than rigby, but it’s somewhat easier for him to simply jam them together because a majority of the dangerous shit caused around the park is always their fault. mordecai could easily blab to benson a lot of the time, but bc of his basic dedication to staying by rigby’s side, he chooses not to, and so benson really has no choice BUT to see them as a unit no matter the situation they find themselves in

a lot of what benson’s about is work and that’s very clearly shown to us from the get go. it’s who he /is/, he’s the boss at the park and that’s all we really get to see of him (until the first few episodes of s3 where we’re given some honest insight into who he used to be and currently is), so of course he holds a certain expectation for the employees who work under him. he expects rigby to do this shitty thing and pay for the aftermath later. he expects mordecai to follow along and pick up the pieces that’ve been dropped by him

bc he’s grown so used to their daily fuck ups, it comes as no surprise to him that rigby lands himself in the hospital from an absolutely idiotic decision he was consciously aware of making. and bc benson is so strongly aware of this, he has the absolute gall to turn around and tell mordecai exactly why this has happened; because they skipped on work

to reiterate: he wants the two to come away from this knowing that a very real and terrifying thing has suddenly come about because they didn’t do their fucking jobs. and this is the exact kind of shit benson had been trying to avoid since hiring them. to him, this was GOING to happen. this was inevitable

these characters and their relationships have already been so well established that having a situation between them suddenly be cranked all the way to 11 is of course going to call for some incredibly needed development; not only does mordecai physically lash out at benson, he also verbally attacks him too by admitting to him that nobody truly cares for him beyond the general boss/employee relationship. it’s extremely harsh and is said in such a cold way that we’re just sat there wondering when benson’s going to speak his mind again to counter with him

but he doesn’t. of course he doesn’t. and why? bc that punch to the face and those verbal insults were a fucking wake up call. in all the time he’s known mordecai, this is the very first instance where he sees firsthand just how mordecai takes on the emotional backlash from shit like this. and he stands there and takes it because he knows mordecai is 100% in the right in his actions and his words; and even if he isn’t, benson takes it on anyway bc mordecai has every fucking right to react like this from being fed such a ballsy piece of bullshit in an incredibly extreme situation that shouldn’t call for this whatsoever

it’s in mordecai’s exact reaction that benson’s logical, “no bullshit’ attitude comes to a grinding halt and he’s suddenly forced to take a step back and really come to terms with seeing mordecai for who he truly is without rigby by his side for the very first time since he’s known him. it’s mordecai’s raw devotion and love for the people he cares about, in this case: rigby, that causes benson to come to the gradual understanding of how much he truly fucked up in saying what he had before

in an earlier s3 episode, benson tries unsuccesfully to get rid of a stick hockey game mordecai and rigby find holed up in the garage. though the two want to know why he’s so against them playing it, we’re not exactly told much of anything until close to the end of the episode, where it’s revealed to us that benson used to be a stick hockey champion and had taken a young apprentice under his wing by the name of dave. without going into details, dave is killed in a match against a man named chong and since the incident, benson has had to put away another facet of his past until the duo dig it up again. so he has no choice but to go down there and play chong, thus winning and getting the closure he needs with daves death

you would think bc of all this, bensons empathy card would come running through the gate as soon as he realises just how serious the situation is. if he wasn’t constantly wearing a shell made of wax paper, maybe the first thing to come out his mouth would’ve been “oh shit mordecai i’m so sorry” instead of “you fucked up and this is why” like a decent human being

when benson realises what he said was completely uncalled for, he not only apologises to mordecai, but he takes it upon HIMSELF to give him jonthans own book and work with mordecai to complete the challenge, and this leads into what has to be one of my favourite uses of a licenced song in this show since its airing; bonnie tylers ‘holding out for a hero’ played over an animated 80s-esque training montage

the music has always been a main fixture of the show for a lot of people. older audiences can very much appreciate the brief nostalgia trip while saying aloud “they got that song in here? kudos to them!” and younger audiences can appreciate the flashy colours and coming to the realisation that this was played in the cinematic masterpiece that is shrek 2, while both can be similitanously distracted by how truly boring these scenes would be without music overlaying them. that’s the beauty of a montage, folks; no matter the age, they’re still enjoyable to watch….unless they have a shitty song playing over them. 'holding out for a hero’ was such a perfect song choice to have in this episode; not only does it encapsulate the utter cheesiness of every training montage of the 80s but it fits for the exact scenario that rigby is in. i don’t need to spell it out for you bc it’s already there in the damn title, but let me just say that jg could not have chosen a more 'right’ song than this one

they stop outside the restaurant, and as everyone clambers out of the cart, we get ANOTHER one of my absolute favourite scenes between benson and mordecai; i believe this scene was christened amongst the rs fanbase as 'the apology scene’, where mordecai admits to benson that he is a good friend despite how much of an absolute dick benson can be sometimes. it’s incredibly sweet and written in a very direct way; from what we’ve already seen between them up until this point, there is no doubt mordecai holds a complete plethora of feelings about benson and their relationship, benson likewise upon suddenly learning just how highly mordecai values the friendships around him, his own with rigby especially, and instead of getting all choked up about it, mordecai makes it very clear that as of right now, it’s all he has say to benson, and it’s from bensons reaction and one line response that it’s all he needs to hear from him too

in that brief moment, without so much as a few sentences said between them, they’ve come to a mutual understanding of one another, in that both are very aware of just how much this situation has impacted their previous “water and oil” relationship. in fact, this scene was so ridiculously important that in the middle of his commentary for the episode, jg pauses midsentence to watch this scene play out, despite already knowing exactly what happens in it, bc he recognises how pivotal it was in not just their relationship, but in the series as a whole

in an earlier draft of the episode, jg explains in the commentary that they were going to have rigby upchuck the omelette then have the sick come to life and train him in beating the challenge. hilarity and moral questioning ensues when he slowly realises he’s aiding rigby in eating his own kind for a stupid hat and a fight breaks out in the restaurant

not only do i personally fucking adore this change, obviously, but i also find it incredibly interesting in that the absolute craziness of a general episode, where rigby is very much awake and is the main character, is switched out for an episode that showcases the utter importance of friendship, and how rigbys fucking around can get him almost killed, which is what we had seen in previous seasons, but never this bad. in a roundabout way, rigby is the main character, even if he isn’t consciously aware for a second of the events happening around him, bc we see the complete fallback rigbys idiotic decision has on not just mordecai, but benson too

jg clearly took this episode idea and fucking ran with it. it was the only episode to win them an emmy, and rightfully so; every single scene is an absolute masterpiece and it pales in complete comparison to almost every other episode following it. with a show so trenched in its tagline “anything but regular”, the much needed turning point comes as an absolute surprise to the audience, where the core of the show is flipped on its head and we’re suddenly told that your moronic behaviour can have extreme backlash when you’re unaware of the consequences that come with it. having benson and mordecai be front and center of it all, the two characters who are very knowledgable of the sheer stupidity rigby can pocess at times, is so fucking perfect in itself bc it forces them to push aside their differences to work together in something benson would usually find as completely ludicrous and would most likely opt out of if the stakes weren’t so high

i’ve already said before that i love this episode and i will continue to love it bc it is so fucking important. in the 11 minutes of runtime, jg manages to write an episode that, at its core, is about friendship and the lengths you’re willing to go for somebody you deeply care about, while also developing a relationship that goes from absolute hatred to the beginning of a friendship based around that very lesson

though the show had produced some truly great episodes from various board artists, jgs always seemed to have a very distinct style to them; they were always wacky and fun, but took on a serious note at times while also hiding some sort of message underneath the antics, and as every show creator, he was highly keyed into the beats of his show. one of the main reasons this episode was so incredible is bc it was made by somebody who has an extreme love for and deep understanding of his characters; yes the artists episodes were fantastic at times, but when it comes down to it, the creator really does know them best, and being the sole artist for this episode gave jg a ton of creative freedom to try his hand at throwing them into such an intense situation for the first time, where mordecai could potentially lose his best friend and seeing just how everybody responds to the weight of that scenario is exactly something we, the audience, needed to see. and the shows creator healming the reigns for this entire episode was just 👌🏼

you really could not have trusted anybody else to board this episode

Yes I did! 

And hmm.

I mean I hated a lot of what everyone hated. Emma’s lines to move on and packing his stuff. The usual. But I also totally understand it because that’s what my dumb ass whose been scared too many times in the past would do. And I would do it not because I BELIEVED or FELT what I was saying but because it slightly eases the burn and sting and stomach churning pain I would be feeling. As I mentioned before I’ve had moments where i’ve had friends or people I love step out of my life or appear to be doing that and the first thing I did was remove the reminders of them from around me. So I get it. 

Heck im in a current predicament, if you’d like to know, at the moment with my best friend where he seems to be getting super distant and not wanting to hang out (though who knows he may be busy) but as a result I’ve started actively ignoring his stuff. Unfollowing him on FB and changing out some pictures in my room because it just makes me fricken depressed man. So again I really really understood where Emma was coming from. I think they were trying to make her relatable and I hella relate.

I am disappointed that the angst does seem to be just for angst sake and I’m not holding my breath for some deep conversation after the matter. Though it is a nice dream.

I’m also not thrilled with how it looks like the brunt of this secret is about Emma’s reaction. I was hoping Charms would have more focus this time around and we’d be able to see him deal with his feelings. But again I feel it will get nicely tucked away.

I also would have preferred a lot more Jafar. I feel like that was one of their HUGE teases for season 6 and there was really nothing in return. Like I could honestly care less for emoboy666xx or as the fans call him, Gideon. I think he was mainly used as the main villain to give Rumple a story and some redemption scenes and idk. Just not as into it as I would have been with Jafar. I mean damn, the dude can act and he plays the villain sooo well but he is also good looking as hell to top things off. 

AS FOR THINGS I LIKED

I liked that her moving on lines and things of that nature didn’t sound so sure at least. Like I believe she used the word “probably” a lot right? And she said something like I think “YOUR right”. She didn’t sound certain at all. She was agreeing because she thought it would make her feel better. There was no kind of strong belief there at all. And also that was relatable as hell. You ever do that. Feel like crap. Have a friend try to make it better and you’re like “I guess your right,” even though you STILL dont believe it and you STILL feel like shit. That’s what I saw after some calming down at least lol.

I really loved everything Killian Jones this episode. I mean Colin is fucking amazing yeah? His face had me deep breathing the whole time. A master of facial expression is what that guy is. I also really did love Jasmine and  Aladdin finally coming together. TL kisses always give me butterflies. (CS WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG????)

Im always for girl power team ups. So I loved Jasmine and Ariel working together.

I had some good laughs that I feel were missing recently. Drunk snow had me dying. And the scene where everyone in Killian’s storyline run into each other and says each others names gave me a good giggle.

Also YAYYY Killian has friends, and the ariel hug just ahhh such good development. This is what I need for Regina btw. 

Calling Killian a hero had my heart skipping beats.

The dire urge for Killian to get home had me feeling some sort of blessed way. 

THE HUG FROM HIS BROTHER!!! LIKE WHAT THAT MEANT IS SOOO PIVOTAL AND IMPORTANT AND GAHH.

Just all the support he got. I’m a huge advocate for Killian having friends outside of the Storybrooke gang (especially when none of their asses were supporting him. Like I don’t blame Emma but everyone else should have given some kind of support.) You know what i would have loved? Regina showing some change in her thoughts for him. I get they were going for supportive friend who trashes dude to show support. But I wasnt digging it. I LOVED when Killian made that comment towards the end of season 5 where he says that Regina has “changed” when Emma was afraid she would do something bad after Robin’s death and Hooks reappearance. It would have been great to parallel that with a similar response from Regina.

I did like Jafar being turned into a staff and Ariel just sort of parading it around all cute like. I fucking love that fish. 

And then of course that CAPTAIN SWAN SCENE. My godddd. It was everything I needed. It was Killian declaring what needed to be declared. It was intense and beautiful and romantic and it didn’t even happen while they were together. THEY WERE IN DIFFERENT REALMS. AH. I also needed to see the response that Emma had. I think Jen encapsulated the perfect reaction. WHat I needed as a fan wasn’t just shock or surprise. After the earlier lines I really needed to see her walls just drop. I needed to see that that’s what was happening earlier. That she didn’t believe what she was saying it was just her putting walls up to ease the pain. And in the CS scene what I saw was just plain relief. Walls dropping relief and that all the BS she was spewing was never any sort of truth. I saw the truth slip out after a night of just ignoring pain by lying to yourself. I saw her real true feelings. And I needed that.

Queen Albums: Blind Reaction

Hello all! So, I’m a new a Queen fan, although I’ve been listening to their music more closely for a couple of months now. I’ve always been familiar with their greatest hits like “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “Under Pressure”, etc. I never really cared to listen closely until recently when I watched the movie and fell in love with the band. I listened to music a lot more recently, but haven’t dug into the albums really besides A Night at the Opera. So, without further delay, I’m gonna listen to their albums chronologically and react to them! We’re gonna begin first with their first album Queen. Let’s begin! (Disclaimer: this is probably not going to be professional in any sort of way.)

Keep Yourself Alive:

- Alright, right off the bat we have Brian playing guitar, and I’m digging it! It definitely is heavier than what I’ve heard in most of their later songs. If I remember right, this album had more heavy metal in it, so I’m not surprised. I love the sound of it though!

- Oh! I hear some stick and bass from Roger and John, very nice! I always love John’s bass work, his parts are so fun!

- Ah, here’s Freddie! So cool to hear him sing other songs besides the ones I know!

-Oh, is this song about chasing ambition? Or struggling with the chase for it? The lyrics are very interesting to me because they remind of Death On Two Legs.

- Okay, I should mention now that I’m watching the video of this song, and I love how glittery their outfits are. They all look so pretty lol.

- Hey, they’re all singing! Cool that they were doing stuff with the three’s voices from the start.

- Roger and Brian both get solos, and they sound so cool! Roger’s actually grabbed my attention more than Brian’s, but both were rad!

Okay, this was a good song! It definitely isn’t as crazy instrumentally, which makes sense since this is their first album and they’re trying to put themselves out there. I definitely can hear the heavy metal influence in this song and I’m curious as to how that shows in the rest of the album. Alright, next!

Doing Alright:

Oh! I recognize this title! Let’s see what it’s all about!

- Starts with some quiet piano playing, definitely different from the first song!

- Okay, so this is definitely a lot more chill and contemplative than the first song. With Freddie’s singing and Brian’s guitar work, it makes for a melancholy song.

- I really like the lyric in this song too. The music and the lyric really help capture the meaning of song so well. Everyone has times where they’re only getting by, and this song really encapsulates that pretty well.

- WOAH WOAH WOAH It just got VERY heavy metal all of the sudden. That’s very interesting! It almost shifts the tone of the song.

- Oh, it’s back to the original melody. Oh! Brian’s soloing again! Always nice to have that. I’m assuming that’s always a bit of a theme with Queen, since at lot of the music I’ve listened to with them always has Brian soloing at some point.

- Ugh, that is a gorgeous ending with the band members harmonizing and with the quiet piano.

I really liked how this song ended. I liked the song in general! I’m not sure about the shifts between the softer melody and the harder melody, but I still thought it was cool! I doubt they thought of this when making those shifts, but to me I felt like they did that to represent the scared uncertainty the person in the song was feeling about the next day. Shifting between believing that everything would be find and panicking that it won’t be. All in all, I enjoyed the song, and I can’t wait to hear the next one!

With a title like that, there already is a 30% increased chance of me liking it. We’ll see!

- This is definitely heavier, I can tell from the guitar and the ambience.

- The lyrics are definitely all Freddie. Only he would write about a Great Rat King and relate to religion.

- Actually, speaking of religion. Is this about a story in the Bible? I’m genuinely curious.

- Dang, I hear some of the multi layering voice stuff they do later on! It’s so interesting to see them trying this stuff even in their first album, to see the root of it all!

- The melody’s interesting, but honestly I’m in awe of Brian’s musical versatility. I think I heard three different types of guitar throughout the song and he played all of them beautifully. I really love the solos he has in this one, they are impressive.

- No slack on Roger or John either. Both of their parts on this song were fun to listen to too! I loved Roger’s solo at the end!

I enjoyed this song too. It isn’t my favorite song ever, but I can enjoy it’s creativity and weirdness of lyric that only Freddie has. I’m not much of a heavy metal person, but I didn’t mind this song too much! I might listen to this album more after this reaction.

My Fairy King

Ooo boy! This looks like another Freddie one! Let’s see what it’s like!

- Huh, starts off with some dissonant guitar notes, pretty cool! Almost reminds me of the UFO sounds Bowie makes in Starman

- AHH ROGER’S FALSETTO, I’M MELTING FU-

Sorry, I just REALLY love that man’s falsetto, it’s almost god like, I swear.

- I really like the bass and guitar bouncing of each other! Gives it a cool jive to it!

- My god, that piano work and Freddie hitting those higher notes, I didn’t know he sounded that good in his higher register!

- Dang, some of this is giving me flashbacks to Lap of the Gods. I’m always down for when Queen tries to make a song sound otherworldly or alien. It’s so neat to see what these four come up with!

- Oh wow, that got pretty fast at the end! I like that speed up actually, it was pretty lit!

- Before I forget, the lyric in this song was distinct too! Freddie always seems to focus on old stories or fairytales and is able to make something original from it, which is pretty neat! I like that a lot!

I think this is my favorite song currently on the album. It’s just so weird and creative, and I love the melody and the voices that Freddie and Roger do for the fairies. Although, Liar is up next, so I could be swayed pretty quickly.

Liar

- Oh, so this song starts off more with percussion and clapping, cool!

- And it has a video! Actually, I’d seen part of it on an Ashley Ann vid I believe. Where they sing “All Day Long!”

- Hey, I like riffs Brian have, those are cool as shit! Really livens up the melody!

- “I’ve traveled to Mercury and Mars” Oh my god Freddie. XD Always gotta flaunt the new name I suppose.

- The melody in this is different, but in a good way. This feels like a more familiar Queen song to me, something that is more like them. Of course, My Fairy King is pretty distinctly them too.

- The lyrics are so easily analyzed, I love it. I can’t wait to listen to this a thousand times and try to make a story out of the album.

- YAS it’s the part where they go “All Day Long!” God, I don’t know why but I love that part so much. It’s catchy!

- Since I’m watching a video of it, I must say Freddie is really strutting his stuff on stage! I’m loving it! Also, they all look so pretty still. It’s probably the same performance but I want to point it out lol.

- Yay! Deaky gets a solo! And it sounds super nice! It’s always awesome seeing the bass player get a time to shine! You go dude!!

Yup, I love this song a lot! I don’t know if it beats My Fairy King, but I can say I really enjoyed the song a lot!

The Night Comes Down

Am I the only one that’s getting ominous vibes from that title? No? Well, let’s find out if my instincts are off or not.

- Oh! Never mind, it’s a Brian song! His song’s aren’t usually scary. We’re good!

- Okay, that first chord reminds me of I’m in Love With My Car and it honestly scared me for a sec lol.

- The beginning of this song almost sounds like something you’d hear on Dateline, vaguely. I wonder if it’s in a minor chord and that’s why?

- Wow, the lyrics in this are sad. “Colouring, now all I see is gray.” Damn, I knew Brian struggled with depression for a long time, but I didn’t think it really set in until his first divorce. Dang it, now I want to hug the old bastard. I hate seeing and hearing people suffer.

- I will say that I love the part where Freddie and Roger harmonize together, they sound good together in a different way from Roger and Brian’s good. I like it. I wonder if I’ll hear that more in the later albums.

- This song is mostly instrumental, which I’m fine with! Good instrumentation and melody is one of Queen’s strong points, so I’m not surprised that they focused on it a bit more in this song, especially since Liar was a little more lyric focused. It seems most of this album focused on instrumental stuff, which is cool since they were trying to find their sound and such!

Personally, I loved this song too! I love quieter songs, so listening to this was a nice breather from the other songs! Although I’m not sure I should listen to it when I’m in a down mood. Anyways, next one up is a Roger song, which means it’s probably the pure opposite of this one, yay!

Modern Times Rock n Roll

- Oh wow! This is fast, me gusta!!

- Simple beat and melody, but really smart lyrics!

- Actually, more on the lyric! I remember reading some place that Brian talked about how smart and aware Roger was of the Rock and Roll scene during the 70’s and that he knew that there was going to be a new wave coming through pretty soon. I feel like this is Roger’s way of commenting on that and that Queen was going to be part of this new wave whether anybody liked it or not. I know that his songs are usually very political and social, so it’s nice to see that he’s been doing that from the beginning!

- Oh, I love the wails that Brian’s doing on his guitar, that’s good shit!!

I haven’t really got much else to say on this ditty. It’s an interesting first song for Roger, but it so definitely defines him, at least to me anyways. Onwards to the next song!

Son and Daughter

- This song is slower, but kind of has an epic sound.

- Not a lot of chaotic things happening like in the other songs, kind of a more straight forward rock song, which I like.

- Again, the lyrics intrigue me. It seems like it’s talking about doubles standards for men, or maybe it’s talking about homosexuality or anything! I really like they are vague enough to let the listeners interpret things, because they can get their own meaning out of it.

- It’s a bit of a heavier song, but it’s not bad. It’s a got a beat and a melody. It doesn’t have that standard chaotic Queen mark but I’m not gonna judge. This is a first album, after all.

- I’m surprised there aren’t any solos in this, but at the same time I’m almost glad because it was feeling formulaic to have Brian do a solo every song (even if he is amazing).

- That speed up was super interesting! I’m sad that it didn’t lead into the next song though. I was so ready for Jesus to be the part two of this one. Oh well!

I liked this one, but it doesn’t really stick out to me in anyway. Even then, it was a good song!

Jesus

- Welp, this is definitely the most religious out of all of them!

- Dang, the song’s actually pretty tame sounding, which makes sense. They don’t want to go too crazy singing about the Lord.

- I’ve noticed something. This song kind of sounds like an old balled or hymn, which is pretty cool considering genre and subject matter. That is all.

- Freddie’s kind of scatting is honey to my ears, I love it madly.

- Same to Brian’s solo work. Even if I get annoyed with how formulaic that can be, doesn’t mean he doesn’t sound wonderful every time he plays.

- I really like the echo effect! Kind of snapped me back into attention when I heard it!

This one was also good but eh to me. The one thing that really grabbed my attention from it was that it was fairly religious, which caught me off guard a little. Queen’s covered a lot in their music, so it shouldn’t surprise me, but I’m surprised that they sang this much about Christianity and such in this early album. More on that later, last song!

Seven Seas of Rhye (Instrumental)

- Wow, that’s all I got to say! I forgot that this was the song with the cool piano part in it, so I’m hyped for when I get to listen to it all the way through! A good decision on their part to leave that in there, a good tease for their next album!

Overall: I liked this album! I’ll admit, I was spoiled most likely when I listened to A Night at the Opera, but I still enjoyed this one! It was really cool to see the band’s beginnings post-Smile, and seeing them get their hands dirty with composing music. I was surprised at the religious undertones of the album, but didn’t mind it. It let them mess around creatively with some things, like getting influences from old ballads or hymns in Jesus. It was neat to see that they were doing stuff like the voice overlaying and solos from the beginning and I’m honestly proud of them for sticking with that to the point of perfection. I’m definitely returning to this album for Liar and My Fairy King, those two are my favorites easily from this album, besides The Night Comes Down, of course.
