I, Tonya, and Black Swan: The Obsessed Woman Trope
Tumblr media
As I write this I am listening to Taylor Swift as she just released her two rerecorded songs(This Love & Wildest Dreams)less than an hour ago. As I am spiraling down the rabbit hole “this is me trying” came on. Usually when I am listening to a song I try to categorize to whom this song belongs. Frequently these songs belong to fictional characters(as I know far more of these than real people) and when this song came on I thought of two women. Nina Sayers from Black Swan and Tonya Harding from I, Tonya.
For a brief overall summary “this is me trying” is the 9th track on Taylor Swift’s folklore. This song goes over a feeling of failure, of regret. Swift recalls her potential and the useless criticism that she endured. In the end of the song she admits her own faults and asks for the person the song is directed to notice her attempt at reconciliation. This song can be connected to relationships but I believe that it is her way of highlighting the way the media treated her following the Kim/Kanye Scandal and her asking everyone to recognize her efforts.
For those who don’t know, Kim and Kanye West had a feud going with Taylor Swift since Swift was 15. This was when Kanye interrupted her mid-speech at the VMAs saying that she didn’t deserve the award. Then in later years Kanye wrote a derogatory song that name dropped Swift and called her a “bitch”. Kanye tried to defend himself when called out--stating that Swift allowed him to say that, and then showed video evidence(which is now provably false) in which she supposedly gave consent. Following this Taylor was demonized in the media. At Kanye concerts fans would scream derogatory things about her all with the encouragement of Kanye, she couldn’t go out in public and then later hid away for nearly a year to escape the media. This song to me represents Swift’s yearning to be who she was before the drama, to have the fans she had before, to have the support she used to, to be able to do what she loves without harassment following her wherever she goes. This is her trying.
As I listened to this plea of recognition two movie popped into head. Black Swan(2010) and I, Tonya(2017). Why? First I should probably give you all a summary.
In Black Swan, Nina Sayer(Natalie Portman) is an aspiring prima ballerina. So when the company director decides he needs a replacement for his prima ballerina of “Swan Lake”, Nina is his first pick. However, in order to be Odette in Swan Lake one must be able to personify both the Black and the White Swan. And while Nina is a perfect rendition of the white, Nina has competition for the black swan. A new ballerina, Lily(Nina Kunis), is the the perfect candidate for the Black Swan and she embodies everything the Black Swan is. This rivalry springs a twisted friendship and marks the beginning to the end for Nina as her Black Swan begins to show its wings.
I, Tonya is based on the true story of Tonya Harding. This details the events that occurred between 1991(when Harding became the first American woman to complete a triple axel) and 1994(when her ex-husband colluded to injure Hardings opponent Nancy Kerrigan). This movie details Harding’s life and what it meant.
What all three of these things have in common is one trope. “The Obsessed Woman”. Whatever you want to call it these pieces of media all connect through this. Many others have called this trope the “Obsessed Artist” but I wanted to focus specifically on the gendered view of this.
I find in all three of these women a specific reoccurring issue. The patriarchy.  I know some of you are groaning as I say this as this is the answer to everything in my book but it is true. In Taylor Swift’s position she was primarily accosted by Kanye which then eventually led to her downfall. In Black Swan, Nina is confronted by the much older, male artistic director who holds the role over Nina’s head asking for sexual favors and often making inappropriate advances to Nina. In I,Tonya, Hardings life seems to get worse and worse following her decision to get married to her now ex-husband until eventually everything culminated into the attack on Nancy Kerrigan.
Another issue that I find more prominent, is the issue of pressure. Throughout time there has been a pressure placed on the backs of women to preform. To be a woman is to perform. In cases like these though femininity is not the only thing being performed(even though especially with these examples it is). Oftentimes what is being asked of these women is far outside what the average person could or should be doing. And is often quite unhealthy.
To do ballet one has to train their feet for decades so they can learn to stand on their tip toes something that is so unnatural you have to condition your bones to grow a certain way to do it. If you google a ballet dancer’s feet you can see the daily wear and tear that occurs, the excruciating pain that it must cause these ballerinas who once on stage must force a smile. This is an accurate analogy of what being an “Obsessed Woman” is. To be forced to perform past the point of resistance and into pain but still keep quiet about it, to keep smiling. Swift keeping face even in the midst of very traumatic occurrences(she used to get from her apartment to a car when leaving the house in a rolling box), to Harding being forced to compete by her mother at age 3, and having to survive an abusive relationship while still being on of the country’s leading ice skaters.
The Standard stated, “In the real world, artists constantly reiterate that some obsessive trait with their work is necessary for success, whether this be in the financial industry or the artistic dance industry...There is no doubt that through sacrificing everything, dreams did come true. To achieve true success, whether that be achieving high praise or being the best at something, it’s necessary to make sacrifices, sometimes unhealthy ones, to push yourself to your goals.”
So as the Swift’s song comes to an end for the eighth time I can’t help but wonder if this pressure will ever decrease. I doubt it as already recently we have seen more and more “Obsessed Woman Tropes” popping up(ie.The Queen’s Gambit) . And while it may be fun to enjoy this media, we have to remember that in some cases there are real women that are being pushed to the breaking point. That you just can’t see yet, and that are trying their very hardest.

Breaking Down Margot Robbie’s Iconic Roles
Tumblr media
In the world of Hollywood, certain stars shine brighter than others, and Margot Robbie is undoubtedly one of them at the moment. With her outstanding acting abilities and captivating presence, Robbie has graced our screens with memorable performances time and again. From her breakout role in “The Wolf of Wall Street” to her recently popular portrayal of Barbie, She has continuously proven her power as an actress. As the hype around her continues to grow, it’s only fitting to take a nostalgic trip through her filmography and rank some of her most outstanding and memorable works.
Tumblr media
1. “I, Tonya”
(2017)
In this biographical comedy and drama, Robbie delivers an emotional performance as the infamous figure skater, Tonya Harding. Her portrayal is very raw, earning her widespread acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, as well as thousands of fans watching for that perfect close-up of the actor’s passionate performance. Robbie’s ability to capture Harding’s complexities makes “I, Tonya” an amazing cinematic experience worth every second. Filled with drama and excitement, there is never a dull moment in the movie.
Tumblr media
2. “The Wolf of Wall Street”
(2013)
Scorsese’s tale of excess and greed wouldn’t be complete without Robbie’s portrayal of Naomi Lapaglia, the feisty wife of Jordan Belfort, a former stockbroker and financial criminal. Despite being relatively new to Hollywood at the time, Robbie commanded the screen alongside Leonardo DiCaprio with effortless charm and undeniable charisma. With this success, Robbie became loved by men and women everywhere, showing us that even when crime is involved, you can still look stunning in pink.
Tumblr media
3. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”
(2019)
In Tarantino’s artistic love letter to 1960s Hollywood, Robbie embodies the essence of Sharon Tate, capturing her innocence and warmth with grace. Her appeal is evident, even though there are too few lines for her to deliver on. While her role may be more understated and smaller in this compared to others on this list, Robbie’s presence adds depth and authenticity to the film’s nostalgic atmosphere, something that would have been missing tremendously without her.
Tumblr media
4. “Suicide Squad” (2016)
As Harley Quinn, an unpredictable anti-heroine, Robbie added a much-needed jolt of energy into the DC Extended Universe, with her violent yet eccentric charm. With such a star-studded cast, some would have questioned Robbie’s ability to make herself stand out. But when the reviews came, it was apparent that she had a playful yet very memorable performance. While the film itself received some mixed reviews, Robbie’s portrayal of the character was pretty universally praised, solidifying her status as a fan favorite.
Tumblr media
5. “Bombshell” (2019)
Robbie takes on the role of Kayla Pospisil, a fictionalized character representing the experiences of other women at Fox News during the Roger Ailes sexual harassment scandal. Throughout the movie, she transitions from a young and naive character when she first enters the newsroom to a more moral-based character in the aftermath. Despite sharing the screen with other powerful actresses like Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman, Robbie holds her own and delivers a standout performance that is both emotional and powerful.
Tumblr media
6. “Birds of Prey” (2020)
In this female-led spin-off of “Suicide Squad,” Robbie redoes her role as Harley Quinn, this time taking center stage in a comedy adventure filled with action and female empowerment. While the film may have flown under the radar for some who enjoy this universe, Robbie’s magnetic performance remains a highlight in the movie, showcasing her ability to showcase even the most outlandish characters with depth. Robbie’s eccentric adventure abandons the typical dark tones of the superhero universe in favor of fun and energy, resulting in unapologetic excitement. It is almost as if Gotham had made a music video.
As we reflect on Margot Robbie’s career, it becomes clear that her talent has no bounds at the moment. Whether portraying real-life people such as Tonya Harding or larger-than-life characters such as Barbie, Robbie consistently captivates audiences with her skills and dedication to her craft. With each new role, she pushes the boundaries of what it means to be a leading lady in Hollywood, leaving an indelible mark on cinema in the process, for men and women alike. As we anticipate and wait for her future projects, one thing is certain. Margot Robbie’s stardom will continue to rise, illuminating the silver screen for years to come.

I, Tonya
I watched this movie and was left amazed by it. I, Tonya is based on the true story of Tonya Harding,  the first woman figure skater to do a triple axel, and her connection to an attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan. The movie stars Margot Robbie as Tonya, Sebastian Stan as Jeff Gillooly, Tonya’s ex husband and Allison Janney as Lavona Fay Golden, Tonya’s mother. I would first like to talk about…

So the thing is the Netflix thing isn't a movie it's the first 40-45 anime episodes put into 8 hours of live action. Idk what that is in the manga chapters tho
But yes you should get into it! There's nothing in the live action that you need previous info on, being that it's the beginning of the adventure! Some of the stuff in the live action isn't quite accurate to the manga or anime but nothing in it falls under a need to know beforehand.
Hell you don't even need to know anything about the world that one piece is set in bc as we're following Luffy who also barely knows whats going on at any given time lol
Yeah I might give it a go then. Don't know how I managed to look at the listing on Netflix yesterday and still not figure out it isn't a movie.
My entire knowledge of the franchise is that there's this fella called Luffy who can make his limbs go boing boing like Betty Spaghetty and there's a Piece but probably only one of them. I've always been too intimidated by the sheer amount of content that I just didn't watch it. So I reckon 8 episodes would be a good taster.
And if the mc also has no idea what's going on then that's just instantly relatable isn't it.

What are the scenes/sequences that have really impacted you on shows/movies? It can be anything that might have blown you away, like an epic and large-scale scene, something with phenomenal acting, a strong text, monologues, montages or even something simple and ordinary but that for some reason stuck with you. P.S. If it's going to exceed Tumblr limits, you don't need to write a full breakdown, you can just list them. :)
Haha it's not the text that exceeds Tumblr limits, it's the gifs ;)
I'll start with links to videos no one watches, but there are only five, so.
This isn't the actual scene I have in mind but it'll work because Lovers Rock in general moved me in a way that only one other thing - a play - did because it captures a very Jamaican/Caribbean diaspora experience and I'm not British and this takes place in the 80s and I wasn't alive then, but there is a lot of crossover between the diaspora in Canada and the diaspora in England so when I watched Lovers Rock, I felt seen, like seen in a way American content can't do for me.
youtube
Viola Davis' monologue in Fences is self-explanatory. This is acting.
youtube
So, I didn't get the fuss over Sebastian Stan for a very long time. I'd seen him in Gossip Girl and OUAT and whatever Marvel movies I'd watched and was like, he's just a guy. Then I saw I, Tonya. And I was like, Oh! He's an actor. And it was also the movie I realized that Margot Robbie was versatile and I had seen her in, like, five different things before this and thought it was a different person each time. So, this scene has stuck with me.
Unfortunately, there isn't a video yet that just has all of the siblings reacting to Logan's death but this was just a master class in acting
youtube
I have said repeatedly that I wish I'd written this movie (yes, it's a remake), this scene is just great, great dialogue that they both handled really well and Tom Hanks did a great job being such a dick. This movie got my blood pressure up as a CHILD.
youtube
The rest will be in gifs and these scenes impacted me for a variety of reasons, some just an emotional impact, some I found visually stunning, some are about the script, some are about theme but all require more context than the gif

OK I just have to say, when I tell you, as a kid, I thought this was the MEANEST thing you could say to someone because of Cher's reaction. I fucking love this movie.

I seemed to have focused mostly on movies in this post. Maybe I'll do TV in another if there's interest.

Wait so how long was it between that flirty interaction on Instagram and them turning up/ leaving the ITonya premiere together ? Because a quick Google search says there’s almost a year between those two events ? 😅 sorry if this seems obsessive and it was so long ago now, just interested!
Oohh that could be right, yeah... I'm not actually sure! I think I knew this at some point but it's been a while since I looked into it so I don't remember, but maybe someone else can tell you? But yeah, I think it's definitely a long running thing, Jessica wished Xavier a happy birthday in 2020 using that anecdote so that was a couple of years later still 😅 I don't think this seems obsessive, I think it's an interesting situation too! 😘

I’m surprised LJ is nominated for best performance in a show for P&T at the MTV awards but not Seb? // honestly I think this always going to be the issue. If you look at ITonya they nominated Margot and not Seb for the Oscar’s because it was Tonyas story. I can’t see them not nominating Lily but nominating Seb because it’s supposed to be Pam’s story in this case also. They’ll always go first to the person whose story is being told IMO
Yeeepp! Exactly.
