A black girl will be spending years in jail because she had a mental health crisis. PLEASE READ
Tumblr media
Meet Saraya: she was experiencing a mental health crisis. Police came and tackled her. She is 15.
Saraya Rees is a 15 year old biracial girl from Coos County, Oregon. After being abruptly instructed to stop taking her antidepressants by a local pediatrician, Saraya went into psychosis. In her manic state, Saraya poured a small amount of gasoline on the floor. Her parents called Coos Health & Wellness in hope that that would send mental health advisors, Coos Health & Wellness sent the police. While still in psychosis, the officers arrested her, questioned her without her family or lawyers present, charged with attempted murder and assault, and sent her to juvenile prison for 11 years.
ELEVEN.YEARS.
This is not justice.
This is inhumane.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP:
1. Call these people and demand that she be let go to the custody in her parents.
Please call Governor Kate Brown and Senator Jeff Merkely.
📞Governor Kate Brown: (503) 378-4582

UPDATE EDIT: Jan.5.2021: Saraya has written a letter:
Dear Mom and Dad,
I want you to post this on every social media platform that you can. I want you to do so, so that everyone knows how messed up the system is and how messed up the state is.
I don’t care if people know about my “crimes”, and I don’t care if people know I’m in prison. All I care about is letting people know the truth, this for me, and all of the rest of the kids in the system. This is what really, this is the truth....
I am Saraya Rees. I’m 14 years old, and I’m being charged with attempted murder x2. And attempted aggravated assault x1. I was arrested July 8th, 2019. I was in a detention for 3 months and 9 days. I spent my 14th birthday in Juvy. Not only that, but I have been sexually and physically harassed and the staff did nothing to help. I physically hurt myself even though I was on suicide watch.
They allowed the boys to make sexual gestures and comments to all of the females. The staff at my Juvy made fun of people who self harm or attempted suicide. They would do that right in front of the kids who have done that. Out of all the staff there was only one that was respectful. That staff’s name was Tom (thank you Tom for helping me through all this BS).
The reason I’m telling (whoever it may concern) this, is so you know what really happens in the system. But now I’m going to tell you why I’m really stuck in prison. I am being held in prison because I cried for help. People who know me, know I’ve done many things as a call for help. This was all of the biggest, what I did was pour a small amount of gasoline of the floor at my house. I was never going to light it, but the police and the court all said otherwise.
When in comes to the court they don’t care about the fact they care about tearing people and families apart. The kids that they arrest are the kids who are being sexually and physically abused at home, the teen moms, the kids looking for love in the wrong places, places because their families don’t want them, the kids who are hurt, the kids who are suicidal. They arrest the misunderstood and that is not fair.
They arrest kids even if they have never committed the crimes, they arrest kids for no reason sometimes. As citizens of Oregon we need to take a stand, we need to stick up to this injustice. Please help get the kids like me who, without their families have nothing to hold onto. No reason to continue living out of places like this...please. Join our cause at #takeastand4oregon.
-Saraya Rees, 15 (she was 14 when this was written, I believe) (currently serving 11 years for a crime she did not commit)
MARCH 15. 2021 UPDATE: SARAYA HAS A HEARING! KEEP CALLING!
⚠️UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE⚠️
Saraya is going back to court for a review hearing!!
OYA neglected to transfer Saraya to an inpatient mental health facility despite the fact that Saraya has completed the program at Oak Creek Correctional Facility months ago. It was stated back in October that Saraya be transferred once she completed her trauma work, but her PO officer continues to create more obstacles to keep Saraya incarcerated. Saraya will be back in court soon for her review hearing.
All positive vibes greatly appreciated. This could be a huge step in the right direction. 🤞🏼
Please visit justice4saraya.com for more on her story and ways to help.
April. 13. 2021 UPDATE: THE FAMILY NEEDS YOUR HELP (via instagram)
1) We are looking for a level 5 inpatient residential facility (level 5 means it's being medically managed) ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY that works with Juvenile Youth with Saraya's charges. If you work with a facility that has these resources and are willing to work with Saraya and her family please contact the Justice4Saraya Instagram or the Facebook page in a direct message.
2) Private residential facilities outside of state-run care are notoriously expensive. In the state of CA and FL, these homes can run up to 50k per 30 days of treatment. We are looking for more amplification of the family's GOFUNDME page in order to get the best long-term treatment for Saraya and her family. They will require much individual and family therapy in order to heal from this atrocity and broken system. Please donate if you can or spread the word.
For any trolling behavior you have seen on social media, we want to make a few things clear
-Paul Fraiser, The DA of Coo's County who put out his "official statement" last year of Saraya's case had nothing to do with Saraya's case whatsoever. He was never involved in her sentencing and is only the boss of the Assistant District Attorney, who was advocating as recently as WEDNESDAY TO KEEP SARAYA IN PRISON. She even reminded the court that Saraya was placed in Oak Creek because of her risk of being a "danger to the public". Anyone referencing the DA's statement has VERY limited information based on a biased police report and interview.
-PLEASE DO NOT PERSONALLY CONTACT JUDGE MEGAN JACUOT. She is actively working to help get Saraya out with her new imposed timeline.
-It is up to Saraya's OYA PO officer and her Supervisor to find Saraya a way into residential treatment. Saraya has expressed her remorse and finished her program requirements in order to leave.
⚠️⚠️ MAJOR UPDATE⚠️⚠️ October 17th, 2021
Saraya is now at an inpatient facility, and may be home by next year! However these facilities are notoriously expensive (we're talking 50k a month, so PLEASE DONATE to the GoFundMe! Any amount helps the family.
Also please send letters to their PO BOX now!
Saraya Rees
PO BOX 2642
Albany, OR 97321
Thank you all so much for calling and signing the petition! Let's make sure the family has enough money to keep her at the mental health facility!!!
7/10/2022 EDIT: Saraya graduated high school, according to a post on the official Instagram, at just 16 years old! Doesn't she look so beautiful yall!!! Congrats to her! She should be coming home in a few months!

Saraya Rees is a bright, beautiful, 14-year-old girl from Coos County, Oregon, who was wrongly sentenced to 11 years in juvenile prison without the possibility of parole. She will be 25 years old when even eligible for parole, having missed out on the entirety of her formative teenage years.
With a documented history of mental health struggles, Saraya had also been regularly bullied at her school, Myrtle Point High, for being biracial. Her loving parents, Shannon & Manny, were advised she be put on anti-depressants and therapy after it was revealed that Saraya had been self-harming.
On July 8th, 2019, 3 days after being improperly taken off antidepressants cold-turkey by a pediatrician who was not Saraya’s regular doctor, 13-year old Saraya went into a manic state of psychosis at 4 am. [...] In her manic state, Saraya poured a small amount of gasoline from a lawnmower onto her living room floor. Her dad woke up and found her sitting on the living room floor in a daze. As recommended by her doctor, in the event she showed signs of further self-harm, Saraya’s parents called the 24-Hour Crisis Team at Coos Health & Wellness Center who they expected to pick her up. Because it was the early hours of the morning, the Crisis Center elected to call the Myrtle Point Police and Coos County Sheriff’s Department instead who stormed their house, guns drawn, and handcuffed 95 lb Saraya in front of her parents and terrified 3-year-old sister.
Coos Health & Wellness claimed that Saraya was supposed to be transported to the Bay Area Hospital but they lost track of her, indicating in Saraya’s files that they “don’t know who called the police”, and that Myrtle Point decided they “didn’t need [Coos Health & Wellness] to respond at the time since they had enough to take her to Bay Area Hospital.”
Saraya was, however, taken to the police department where she was read her Miranda rights without a parent or attorney present and informed that she was under arrest. [...]
The DA determined that Shannon & Manny were “victims” of Saraya’s planned “arson and intent to murder” her parents and baby sister. The DA claimed she poured gasoline all over each of them and the house. This is false. In fact, she had poured gasoline on a small patch of carpet in the living room that was later removed and taken as evidence. Saraya maintains that she never intended on lighting a fire, and that the poured gas was a cry for help. She was a young, adolescent girl dealing with a mental illness. But because her parents (who never pressed charges) were considered “victims,” they were not allowed to see or speak to Saraya for 23 days while she was held at a detention center.
Saraya was assigned Criminal Defense Attorney Kate Dyer, who not only admitted to Saraya’s parents that this was “not her area of expertise,’’ but also advised Saraya that if she pleaded guilty, ADA Karen McClintock would reduce her charges from 5 counts of Arson in the first (without ever lighting a fire) and 3 counts of Attempted Homicide to 2 counts of Attempted Homicide in the first and 1 count of Attempted Assault (dropping the Arson charges). Saraya had been experiencing sexual harassment at the detention center and wanted out immediately to a safer environment. Kate advised a guilty plea so Saraya could avoid 3 more months of holding at a center that she was abused in waiting for a trial. As a result, Saraya, at 13 years of age, pleaded guilty to a crime she did not commit. She is now in juvenile prison instead of in a facility where she can get the help she needs.
[...] In April, Saraya was told by her P.O. that she would consider an early release to a residential mental health facility but her parole officer, Diana Pedregon will not consider a transfer out of the prison until Saraya has “accepted accountability.” She wants Saraya to confess to a crime she didn’t commit. That’s her only way out. To lie.
Having a mental illness is not a crime. Sign the petition. #JUSTICE4SARAYA

Repost from @justice4saraya • We need to talk about Saraya's bullying. ⚠️TW: Bullying, racism, self-harm, suicidal ideation⚠️ . . . Saraya was aggressively bullied at both North Bend and Myrtle Point Highschool. She was called racial slurs to her face and made to feel that her blackness was something she should be ashamed of. Saraya went as far as bleaching her beautiful natural hair in an attempt to fit in. Unfortunately, this only made the bullying worse. In 2018, a student at gave out Saraya's phone number to his friends. Saraya was then bombarded with texts telling her that she's "pathetic", "ugly", and that "she should kill herself." Saraya was 12 years old at the time. Both North Bend Highschool and Myrtle Point Highschool neglected to help put an end to Saraya's bullying. 🔹The psychological impact of the bullying caused Saraya to self-harm and be placed on a 24 hour psych watch. 🔹Shortly after she was prescribed the antidepressant that would later trigger her to go into psychosis. 🔹The family was told that if Saraya had self-harmed again or needed help for her mental illness, that they should contact the 24 hour Mobile Crisis Response Team @cooshealthandwellness 🔹When Saraya fell into psychosis, her parents called Coos Health & Wellness. 🔹Coos Health & Wellness called the police. 🔹The police (ignoring that the call was a 5150/ a mental distress call) then stormed in, guns drawn and arrested a 13 year old, biracial girl who was in a manic state of psychosis, rather then sending her to a hospital. Saraya is incarcerated for an incident that was beyond her control. ➡️Please visit the link in our bio for more on Saraya's story and how to help.⬅️ #justice4saraya #savesaraya #freesaraya #blacklivesmatter #blm #protectblackchildren #biracial #oregon #mentalhealthcare #mentalhealth #blackmentalhealth #blackmentalhealthmatters #fundmentalhealth #pacificnorthwest #mentalillness #depression #anxiety #murderino #biracialfamily #biracialkids #blackselfcare #bullying #stopbullying #bullyingawareness #bullyinghurts #bullyingprevention #therapy #blacktherapy #therapists #breakthestigma https://www.instagram.com/p/CK1QjkVs4NO/?igshid=19q9ktzn7ksir

Posted @withregram • @findingronide TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️: mentions of self harm, racism, false imprisonment & psychosis. Please follow @justice4saraya to stay updated on saraya’s story! We cannot forget about her! Let’s talk about saraya rees who is now 15 years old 💛 Saraya has a documented history of mental health struggles and endured bullying at school for being biracial! Saraya was also a self harmer. After finding out, Her beloved parents were advised to put her on anti-depressant meds. On july 8th, 2019 4 days after Saraya parents were advised from a pediatrician (that wasn’t her regular doctor) to take her off her meds....Saraya fell into a manic state of psychosis. For those of you who don’t know what phycosis is... it’s a condition episode that has an impact on the way the brain processes things. One of the common symptoms of a phycosis episode is experiencing delusions and irrational beliefs. At 4am Saraya went into a manic state of phycosis and poured less than a square foot of gasoline in the floor of her living room. This was a cry for help! Instead of getting proper treatment, she was taken into federal custody! She was then charged with attempted murder and assault. She was also sentenced to 11 years in juvenile prison! Saraya deserves to receive the proper mental health treatment she needs, not be locked up for her mental illness! Saraya deserves awareness! Saraya deserves to be back with her beloved family! Police officers should never be called for mental health crises. They often respond violently, (guns drawn at teenagers) and these stories consistently demonstrate a universal ineptness in natural de-escalation techniques. Saraya just turned fifteen behind bars for having a manic episode at age 13. #justice4saraya Art by @thefakepan https://www.instagram.com/p/CFcXawJjjAi/?igshid=181ea4oikxbhd

Repost #msamberpriley ・・・If you care about humans read HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT SARAYA?!? PLEASE READ EVERY SLIDE. Thank you @black_womenlead for bringing this to our attention. This is why we scream #blacklivesmatter, the law isn’t protecting black people. Not even our children. Definitely not black women. Everyone making fun of Meg the Stallion being shot, as if that’s funny, that shit is not funny at all. We are completely desensitized when we hear the news of young black girls going missing, being locked up, or being harmed or killed. I was guilty of that. We still haven’t gotten closer to #breonnataylor’s killers being brought to justice. Sis was killed because of GREED (Read into that). Just admit that y’all hate black women, so we can get back to saving ourselves, cuz we’re the only ones who seem to really care. Ok, I’m ranting now. Back to the point of the post. We have to make it a point to educate ourselves and others about mental health and mental illness. You guys I struggle with anxiety and depression, and I’m on medication for it, what if something goes wrong and I have an episode. That is TERRIFYING to me. This is beyond unacceptable. I’m working on really getting Saraya’s story out there. Please stay tuned for more action items. Repost the shit out of this on every platform. This young queen is STILL in jail. #PROTECTBLACKWOMEN #Justice4Saraya https://www.instagram.com/p/CC_LII7Fr9x/?igshid=1jacxqzfen0w3
