what sexual preferences do you hc for kathryn's characters? (agatha, eve, jen etc... the ones ur familiar with ofc!)
this is my hcs pls don't come at me
agatha's never really put a label on it. in the centuries she's lived, she for sure had sexual encounters with anyone she finds attractive.
the other one is agatha harkness is a raging lesbian. a sapphic. a homosexual.
eve fletcher is bi!! god i love to headcanon characters as bisexual 😵‍💫
Tumblr media
as for jen barkley, she's very much like the first bullet. anyone she deems hot, she'd get 'em to bed with. or anyone just for kicks, or if the person is necessary to her plans or something
doctor olivia octavius. bi. could be pan, with preference for women. there's a peter b. parker/reader/liv fic in ao3 which is very chef's kiss. i hope the author picks it back up bc i need her to dominate me and spider-man 😭
helen ryan is straight af lol but i think she's made out with some women.
carla dunkler would fuck anyone tbh

On the heels of a new AtLA shipping tournament, I have completed my most ridiculous project WIP. BEHOLD!!!
The (current as of the week of January 15, 2024) AtLA Ao3 shipping grid! This chart is by no means comprehensive (for instance, I have the Boulder but not any of the other Earth Rumble participants, nor Aunt Wu at this time, though that may change in the near-ish future), but it's still pretty damn inclusive of most of the commonly appearing AtLA characters in fic posted to AO3. other potential tweaks include more color coding to indicate #of works posted in a tag.
To make the list the pairing has to have at least 4 separate works posted on Ao3. I've made notes where a tag exists but has less than 4 works posted to it. Some have none at all! I love rare/crack pairs with potential, and I hope other like minded individuals can take this and get inspired, or maybe just point and giggle if it kills a few minutes of boredom.
Enjoy!

_____________________________________________________________________________
It’s been over a week since you’ve moved into Kathryn’s hotel room to accompany her. While she shoots, you sit around with Agnes or read in the sun or spend some time at the pool. If you’re quite honest with yourself, being here is easier than you thought it would be. The sun is as happy as you are and with the hotel area being as close to the beach as possible, while also providing enough shade and privacy due to countless trees that are planted around the pool area, you’ve got plenty of places to hang out.
The only thing you weren’t prepared for is how all over the place Kathryn’s busy schedule would be. You barely get to spend time with just her, especially during the last few days of shooting for her project. Nevertheless, you get to wake up next to her now, which is better than anything you could’ve ever asked for. Right as you wonder when she will be back for the day, your phone rings.
“Honey!” Your best friend’s face fills the screen.
“Hey Babes.” You smile at Alex and for the first time ever you see her while being nearly in the same time zone. You have texted a little ever since you came here, but somehow the change from being a couple hours apart to both being in Europe is so different that your usual schedule to talk face to face does not work for you.
“Long time no see, huh?”
She smiles apologetically. “I’m sorry, I’ve been really busy with my finals and all and thought I’d finally check in with my favorite American.”
Immediately thinking of Kathryn, you grin. Alex notices and decides to jump right in asking what you have been up to with the woman in question. The next few minutes are filled with Alex slipping from one extreme to the other just like a cartoon character, as you fill her in on everything that has happened. She gasps for air as she forgot how to breath halfway through the story and watches in awe as you animatedly describe what sleeping next to Kathryn is like.
Shaking her head, she look at you. “Damn.”
“Right?!?!” It’s hard for you to find the right words to explain everything you are feeling to her, so you just nod and break into the widest smile as your eyes travel to the hotel door and see the doorknob turn green.
“Hold on.” You signal Alex something is happening and she quickly notices someone is arriving.
“Good evening, babe!” Kathryn walks into the room and throws her shoes into the corner next to the entrance. Her hair is wild and her make up is nearly worn off. The moment she sees you, her whole body relaxes and her shoulders roll down as a soft smile appears on her face. “How come you’re home already? That’s very unusual of you.”
You are still busy thinking about how she referred to the place you are sharing with her as a home as she walks over to you in a swift motion and pulls you close for a slightly open mouthed kiss to greet you properly. As you part, she notices you are talking to someone on the phone and jumps back, looking at you in shock.
“It’s just Alex, you are all good, K.” Kathryn sighs. Both of you have agreed that it would be easier to keep it on the down low for now so that she could focus on the project and only get asked about it whenever she meets with the press.
Alex takes her cue. “Miss Hahn, lovely to see you again.”
“Honey… I told you to call me Kathryn.” She laughs as she brushes over your arm while she looks at Alex. “Lovely to see you again.”
The two of them smile at each other for way too long without talking. You panic. There is an uncomfortable moment of silence. Just about to speak up, you quickly close your mouth again as Alex breaks it. “Listen Kathryn. You got a good catch there. And I know you’re taking it slow and all, and you are treating her well, but… Y/N is a real treasure and I don’t care who you are - if you hurt her… I am going to find you.”
Your mouth falls open as Alex glares at Kathryn who looks back at her with a soft smile. “I won’t,” she says and it seems like she 100% means it, which is why Alex immediately changes the topic.
“Alright then, congrats to both of you guys. Lovely to see you finally admitted to your feelings.”
“ALEX.” You can’t with her sometimes. You’d totally smack her arm if she was here right now but you are thankful for her and her open arms welcoming Kathryn the way she does.
As you and your best friend giggle away, Kathryn plants a kiss on your head and says her goodbyes to leave to take shower.
“Join her!” Alex sits in front of her phone with wide eyes and an excited look on her face as you slowly shake your head.
Suddenly, she looks concerned. “Why not?”
As you don’t answer, she connects the dots and immediately changes the tone. “Oh honey! No, that’s lovely! You guys are taking it SLOW slow? That’s great! I love that for you.”
You don’t know if the conversation makes you happy or sad, but at least it isn’t uncomfortable. Your mind travels to Kathryn in the shower and how the water runs down her body as she slides her hand…- no. You don’t think that.
You think about how she will be back soon and your time will come and also, very much so, you think about all the other things the two of you already have done, so it really isn’t that bad after all. Noticing the smug grin on your face, Alex connects the dots once again and grins with you, knowing she will eventually get the tea when Kathryn isn’t right next door.
On the next day, Kathryn has a promo photo shoot and decides to take you as part of her entourage since it will take most of the day and she wants to have you around. The shoot is done all in red and her hair is a mess but you love her for it. No you don’t, not yet. Or do you? Shaking your head, you leave the thought behind and get comfortable in your seat again from where you can see her side profile. Your shifting distracts her and she takes her focus off the camera and looks at you for a second smiling the brightest smile.
“Kathryn, the same smile - but towards the camera, please!!! Tell the camera you are in love with the viewers, too.” The very gay photographer immediately picked up on the vibes created in the studio by the two of you, causing Jennifer to roll her eyes and scribble something into her notepad. Looking up from the lense, the photographer winks at you and nods, acknowledging the catch you have made.
The photo appointment is booked in a way that the whole cast takes pictures by themselves first to warm up and then, in the big finale, everyone will be gathered for group pictures and a short interview.
Kathryn is one of the first actresses to shoot that day and gets told that it’ll be about an hour minimum until cast pictures are taken. She sighs and looks at her team who decide to go back to the room to get some rest. Getting to the studio and doing hair and make up was a long process and, combined with several night shoots they’ve had lately, knocked everyone out.
Being the most rested of the group, you walk in the front - at least until a hand pulls you back. Kathryn and you fall behind and, as everyone turns left to walk down the hallway right towards the wardrobe, she pulls you right and slams your back against the closest wall once again. You release a heavy breath but she doesn’t have a concerned look on her face this time. Instead, she pushes herself up against you, sliding a leg between yours.
…………………. …………………….
NSFW FROM HERE UNTIL THE ENDING OF THE CHAPTER
…………………. …………………….
“Kathryn…”, you whimper, looking straight at her.
She shushes you with a finger on your mouth and leaves it there longer then necessary, tracing your lower lip. Before anyone can say another word, you pull her in for a kiss and longingly move your hands underneath her blazer, where you hold onto her and pull her in tighter than ever before.
As you do, she leaves a trail of kisses down your neck and starts kissing down your collarbone as you realize where exactly you are. In the distance, you hear footsteps and immediately panic and open your eyes to look around. Afraid someone might run into you, you reach for the nearest door across from you and push it open. A supply closet. How cliche. Kathryn’s back hits a shelf and nearly pushes cleaning supplies off of it. You catch them in a swift motion, offering Kathryn the chance to pin you against the only empty wall in the room that’s building a corner with the shelves.
Her pupils are blown and she breaths heavy, taking you all in. Next thing you know, she slides her hand under your shirt. It’s simple and lose, practically perfect for the occasion. Pulling it up and over your head, she doesn’t even pay attention to it falling to the floor right next to a can of paint. I stead, she takes in the sight in front of her. She has seen you like that before. But she has never really SEEN you.
Over the last week, you’ve made out with her a couple of times, but it was never that much and your knees get weak as you think about what might happen next. She continues kissing down your front and cups your breasts, keeping eye contact with you as she smiles. “Gosh, you are literally perfect.”
She continues the eye contact as her sneaky hands unbutton your pants and one of her hands manages to slide inside and move downwards. It’s hard, because you’re wearing skinny jeans - on today of all days. As she reaches inside your underwear, her mouth falls open and both of you gasp audibly. Her, because she notices how aroused you are under her touch. You, because this feels a million times better than you could’ve ever imagined.
Both of you breath with open mouths now as you exchange sloppy kisses and shiver in anticipation as she slowly moves her fingers deeper inside your underwear, until she runs past your sweet spot and lets two of them slide inside you. Barely, but enough for you to let out a low loan, not expecting her to touch you like that. She locks eyes with you as she hums “ugh, the things I wanna do to you…”
Hearing this actives your brain again and you react in one swift motion, taking her hands out of your pants as you whisper “oh, but the things I wanna do to YOU,” as you slide down and land on your knees, pulling her pants down with you.
You softly push her back a little until she leans against the closet door and runs her hand through her hair with a shocked look on her face as she holds you in place with the other hand that she had cleaned while you sunk to your knees. You don’t waste any time and completely undress her, grinning to yourself as you realize she has moved from pushing you down to touching herself in a matter of seconds. Before you know it, it all comes over you naturally and you join and help her until she comes undone shortly after and you prop her up as her knees give in.

Patterns in Given Names in the World of Avatar
Or, Naming Your Avatar OC’s: Beyond Baby Name Lists
Naming an original character in any fantasy setting can be a tricky business. Do you use a real name? Do you make one up? Either way, it has to sound like it fits into the established world - but you don’t want it to sound too similar to the names of canon characters, either. In this post, I will offer an analysis of canon names of major and minor characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, looking for discernible patterns in the names of each of the fictional cultures of that world, and offer some suggestions based on my own experience for how to choose or create names for original characters in that world.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with using a “baby name list” for inspiration or even taking a real name from one of the cultures the show is based on and using it. But since the fictional cultures of the show are not complete carbon copies of real cultures, just picking a name from a list of Inuit or Japanese names won’t always give you one that actually fits in with the Avatar world. And maybe you’ve seen enough Water Tribe OC’s named Nanook (I’m guilty of this one myself) and want to get a little more creative. In that case, welcome to the advanced OC naming class.
And yes, there will be color coded spreadsheets.
Methods and Goals
To get a feel for what sort of names will sound like they fit into the world of Avatar, we of course have to look at the names of canon characters. For our purposes, I chose to exclude characters who only appear in spin-off material such as the comics or Kyoshi novels, and only look at the given names of characters from the two shows, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. I have sorted the characters by nation, as well as into cultural subdivisions where applicable. LoK characters from the United Republic of Nations have their own category, since in most cases we do not technically know the specific cultural origin of those characters’ names - though based on the patterns below and other context clues, we can make a reasonable guess for many of them. Characters whose names appear to be nicknames or pseudonyms (such as Longshot and Lightning Bolt Zolt) have also been left out.
The aim of this analysis is to look for phonetic and other patterns in the names of each cultural group within the world of Avatar. We will be looking at the names as spelled using the Latin alphabet, since this is how most fan fiction is written, and how the character names are given in official material, but keep in mind that within the world of the show, all nations use the Han Chinese writing system, so names or syllables spelled differently in the Latin alphabet might be represented by the same character in-universe, or vice versa.
Finally, my guidelines and suggestions for how to choose or create OC names are just that: guidelines and suggestions. These are not rules. It’s your OC, you do what you want.
Without further ado, let’s start looking at some names.
The Water Tribes.
Tumblr media
We don’t have quite the sample size for Water Tribe characters that we’ll see for some of the other nations, but 28 names is still plenty to look at. Notably, we have far more male (18) than female (10) names, a pattern we will see repeated without exception. Draw your own conclusions.
Water Tribe names appear to mostly be two or three syllables long, with most of the one syllable names being from the Foggy Swamp Tribe. Hahn from the Northern Water Tribe is the only other one syllable name. Two syllable names are the most common with 19 names, which is about two-thirds of the total. Three syllable names account for 5 out of the total 28, or less than one fifth - still, this makes them more common than names of the same length in any other nation, and more common than one syllable names in the Water Tribes, especially if you exclude the Foggy Swamp. If you’re looking to use an authentic Inuit or other Arctic indigenous name for your Water Tribe OC, I would be wary of names longer than three syllables, though, as we have none of these in canon.
Consistent with Inuit names, we do have a lot of /k/ and /g/ sounds. The letters K and Q are pronounced the same in Water Tribe names, though in Inuit they represent different sounds. 18 out of the 28 names have at least one of these sounds, with /k/ being far more common than /g/ (17 vs. 2 names). Of course, having the letter K in your Water Tribe OC’s name is by no means necessary, and especially if you are creating a lot of Water Tribe characters, you probably want some variation.
The digraphic consonant sounds /ch/, /sh/, and /th/ are almost totally absent, with the exception of one name from the Foggy Swamp, Tho. The /r/ sound is also never found at the beginning of a name, and the /j/, /l/, /w/, and /f/ sounds are totally absent. The /v/ sound is absent from all given names, but notably appears in the surname Varrick not included above.
Regarding gender differences, both male and female names can end in -a, but this is much more common for female names, with 3 male names compared to 8 female names having this ending. Notably, this accounts for all but two of the female names, and all of the female names end in a vowel. Consonant endings appear to be exclusively masculine, with final /k/ sounds being common, whether spelled with K or Q (8 out of 18 male names), though masculine names can also end in vowel sounds.
There do not appear to be major differences between the Northern and Southern Water Tribe names, however the three names we have from the Foggy Swamp Tribe are definitely distinct - all one syllable, and all open syllables ending in vowels. These sound more like Earth Kingdom names, as we’ll see, which makes sense given the location of the Foggy Swamp.
To my knowledge, only handful of the Water Tribe names are authentic Inuit names, and they are all characters from LoK: Desna, Yakone, Noatak, Unalaq, and Tonraq, or 5 out of the 28 total names. Yue is an authentic name, but a Chinese one. The main Water Tribe characters such as Katara, Sokka, and Korra all have invented names. So yes, you can pick from an Inuit baby names list (and Nanook does fit the patterns we see above), but you are by no means limited to this.
The Earth Kingdom
Tumblr media
Since the Earth Kingdom is the largest of the nations, it makes sense that we have the most names to look at here, with 79 names total, including 56 male names and 23 female names. I’ve included Jet with a question mark, because he may be using a pseudonym like the rest of the Freedom Fighters do, but his name is also plausible as the one his parents gave him. Macmu-Ling, the name of the haiku master in Ba Sing Se, may also be a surname, but this is unclear given the limited information on the character.
One syllable names are much more common in the Earth Kingdom, accounting for 30 out of 56 male names and 10 out of 23 female names. This is roughly half of all Earth Kingdom names, or 40 out of 79. Two syllable names account for 34 out of the 79, or about 43%, with three syllable names being rare overall, just 5 names or 6%. Overall, Earth Kingdom names tend to be shorter, which is consistent with a basis in Chinese, Korean, or Vietnamese names.
Unlike with Water Tribe names, there do not appear to be specific sounds that stand out as distinctively Earth Kingdom. Notably, nearly all names begin with consonants, with only 6 names beginning with a vowel, and always A or O. All of the consonant sounds found in English are represented in at least one name. The /ch/, /sh/, and /th/ digraphic sounds are all present, though not abundantly common. The Earth Kingdom being large and diverse, this greater diversity in names also makes sense.
There is evidence of unisex names in the Earth Kingdom. Wu is used by both a male and female character (Prince Wu and Aunt Wu), and the name Song which is listed as female above we will see again as the name of a male earthbender in Republic City. Other names could also be unisex, but as most are only used by one character, we have no way to know. The only noticeable gendered pattern seems to be that several female characters have English names, which I separated into the fifth column above. This seems to be exclusive or near-exclusive to Earth Kingdom women. Jet could also be interpreted as an English name, but as previously mentioned, this is possibly a pseudonym anyway.
The few named characters we have from Kyoshi Island all have authentic Japanese names, or at least names taken from the Japanese language - oyaji is an affectionate term meaning “old man” or “father”. Kyoshi is distinct from the rest of the Earth Kingdom in many other ways, including a history of isolationism which Japan also has. As for the sandbenders, we only have two names, but Ghashiun stands out as rather distinct in its spelling. Visually, the sandbenders resemble the Tuareg people of the Sahara region, so that might be the direction you want to go if you’re looking for authentic names to use for your sandbender OC’s.
The curious name Macmu-Ling is based on the surname of the writer for the episode she appeared in, Lauren MacMullan.
Fire Nation
Tumblr media
We have 13 female names and 33 male names, for a total of 46 known Fire Nation names.
Two syllable names are most common, with 20 male and 6 female names, accounting for 26 out of the total 46, which is more than half. 15 names have one syllable, which is about one third of the total. Only 5 names have three syllables, or just one tenth, and once again there are no names longer than that.
The letter Z stands out as appearing in 8 names, while it’s much more rare in the other nations - though notably the Z in Zhao is pronounced differently than in the other names. Also worth noting is that all the names with Z other than Zhao - that is, all the names where Z is pronounced as it would be in English - are names of members of the royal family, with the exception of Kuzon. The digraphic sounds /ch/ and /sh/ are both present, but /th/ is not. Other absent sounds include /v/ and /w/.
The Fire Nation gives us our only example of gendered variants on the same name with Azulon and Azula. This implies that the -a ending is generally feminine, though we only have two female names that use it. Ilah ends with the same sound, albeit spelled with a silent H. There is also one masculine name, Yon Rha, that ends in -a, though with a different pronunciation (/ah/ vs. /uh/). The -on ending may also be masculine or generally masculine, but again, only two names use it. Female names are also more likely to end in the /ee/ sound, whether spelled -i or -ee, with 6 of the 13 female names ending this way. Only two male names end with this sound, and one of them, Li, is unisex.
In terms of basis in real world cultures, the Fire Nation often gets heavily identified with Japan in fanon, because they are an island nation with a history of imperialism, but what we see in canon is much more of a blend of Asian cultures, like the other nations. Some names, like Izumi and Roku are Japanese in origin, but some are also Chinese or Chinese-based such as Chan and Lu Ten. And as with the Water Tribes, the main characters like Zuko, Azula, Iroh, and Ozai, tend to have invented names. (Zuko especially would be odd as a Japanese name, since the -ko suffix in Japanese is feminine.) The name Ursa, curiously, is Latin - the feminine form of the word for “bear”. So while you certainly can use Japanese names for your Fire Nation OC’s, as with Inuit names in the Water Tribe, you’re not limited to that by any means. In fact, based on what we see in canon, I would say that if you’re creating several Fire Nation OC’s, you should have about an even mix of Japanese, Chinese, and invented names.
Air Nomads
Tumblr media
With only 13 names, of which 9 are male and 4 are female, this is the smallest sample we have for any of the nations - understandably, since the Air Nomads are all but extinct for most of both shows. We’re even technically assuming that all of Tenzin’s children have Air Nomad names, but this is probably a safe assumption.
Two syllable names are still most common, with 9 of the 13, or about three fourths of the total. There are three names with three syllables, or a little less than one fourth. Aang has the only one syllable name.
With so few names, it’s hard to draw firm conclusions about phonetic patterns. The -a ending is seen on one name for each gender, as is the -i ending, and the -o ending appears on two male names and one female name. The -u ending only appears on one male name, but given the small sample size this doesn’t necessarily indicate a female Air Nomad name couldn’t have the same ending.
We do have clear and distinct real world basis for several Air Nomad names. Tenzin and Gyatso are both taken from the religious name of the current Dalai Lama. Rohan is an Indian name, and Laghima is a Hindu term for the spiritual power of becoming weightless. (Coincidentally, Rohan is also a French surname, but it was presumably the Indian name that the show meant to reference.) Pasang is a Nepali name, though a female one as far as I can tell, whereas it is used for a male Air Nomad. Tibetan, Nepalese, and Sanskrit names would thus all be good places to look for inspiration for your Air Nomad OC’s - though again, don’t feel limited to that. Chinese inspired names would also fit in, and Aang, like all the main characters, has an invented name.
United Republic of Nations
This group of character names, all from The Legend of Korra obviously, has to be considered differently. While we can make educated guesses as to the fictional ethnicity of most of these names, the fact is that many of these characters may be of mixed heritage and we can’t say for sure what the origins of their names are. In the chart below, I have color coded the names according to my best guess for nation of origin, rather than by gender. Names left in white, in my opinion, could be either Earth Kingdom or Fire Nation, and nothing about those characters gives us further clues.
Tumblr media
With 31 names, we do have a decent sample size. Presumably Mako is a Fire Nation name and Bolin is Earth Kingdom, and based on the sound they do seem to fit in with those nations respectively. Raiko has a question mark because it is unclear if this is a given name or surname, but it does seem to follow the Zuko and Mako pattern and thus be most likely Fire Nation in origin. We also have the name Yasuko, for a character who is supposed to be of Fire Nation descent, using the -ko suffix on a feminine name.
Ginger and Buttercup I have designated as most likely Earth Kingdom because they are English names, and as we previously saw, only Earth Kingdom women seem to have names of this variety. Pema is presumably of at least partial Earth Kingdom descent based on her green eyes - this is also a real Bhutanese name. Characters like Lu, Gang, Daw, and Chung are all shown wearing green, and have one syllable names of the kind which are most common in the Earth Kingdom.
Hasook has a very distinctively Water Tribe name, and is of course a waterbender. Tahno and Ming-Hua are both waterbenders as well, though their names are less distinctively Water Tribe. These could simply be less typical names from one of the two polar tribes, or they may have Foggy Swamp Tribe heritage. (I believe this was a popular headcanon for Tahno, at least.) The possibility also exists that they have mixed heritage and may have Earth Kingdom or even Fire Nation names in spite of being waterbenders.
Conclusion
Like everything else in the world of Avatar, the names of the characters are inspired by and based on many real world cultures, primarily Asian, but no one fictional nation in the Avatar world corresponds exactly to a real world culture. When we look for or create names for original characters in this world, we want to respect the real world basis of these fictional cultures, but simply picking a Chinese, Japanese, or Inuit name from a list may not always jive with what we see in canon, in addition to running the risk of being a bit stereotypical.
With the canon patterns outlined above, fan fiction writers and fan artists should feel free to expand their search for names to other Asian, Arctic, or North African cultures, such as Thai, Burmese, Nepalese, Yupik, Aleut, or Berber names. Baby name lists can be helpful, but are often dubiously reliable, especially for non-Western cultures. Personally, when I want to give an OC an authentic name, I prefer to use Wikipedia to find real people from the culture or cultures I’m drawing on. I’ve joked about my own tendency to pick names of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean saints for my fan fiction, but searching for Wikipedia lists or categories of artists, philosophers, or scientists from a given culture can also be useful.
Wherever one chooses to look, name lists are best treated as a starting place - a name from a given real culture won’t necessarily fit into a given Avatar culture, and a name from a certain Avatar culture does not have to come from any particular real world culture. Fans should also feel free to invent names of their own, as the creators of Avatar did. Of the 20 major OC’s in my story Fate Deferred, half of them have real names or variations on real names, and the other half are invented.
And if you want to have a female Earth Kingdom OC named something like Jasmine or Crystal - these are also perfectly in line with canon.

it’s time for another suggested faceclaims masterlist !
this list has been compiled by members of our current crew, as well as added to by other resources along the way. the majority of the faces below will be either a FCOC or 35+, but there is a lot of other ways to display diversity as well.
if you look HERE, you can find a tag full of disabled faceclaims ( as well as a helpful masterlist by dear-indies ! ), HERE is a tag for trans faceclaims, HERE is a tag for faceclaims of color, and taskweekly has incredible niche and varied lists of resources for just about everything! as always, we suggest the FINDAFC blog, or DEAR-INDIES as well as other RPH’s who specialize in broad faceclaim help across the board to find a face to find the perfect fit for you!
the list below is merely a jumping off point, and by no means complete or restricted to just these faces. hopefully they can merely guide you in a direction and help you find your new character to use here at nohopehq! some may be repeats from our previous list ( located HERE ) or also appear on our TAG on our inspo blog, but hopefully that just shows how much we’d love to have them here!
below the cut are 68 faces we’d love to see around!

holiday event c: the annual ministry of magic party, hosted by the auror department!
some time in mid-late december, all wizards in united kingdom and nearby surrounding area find themselves greeted with a simple letter: an invitation to the annual holiday gala at the ministry of magic! it will be held on december 24th, starting at 6pm sharp and lasting all through the night.
this gala is a tradition, and why should this year be any different? should we let a war stop us from having fun? absolutely not! it’s the dead of winter, it’s the holiday season, let’s enjoy one night of revelry and fun where the wizarding community unites to have a good time!
the grand atrium is decorated to the nines, everything you can possibly imagine of a holiday party and more. each individual on the fountain of magical brethren statue is even currently sporting a santa hat! there is a large corner for younger children to play, currently charmed to contain several feet of snow, perfect for building snowmen or having snowball fights. there is, of course, a dance floor for teenagers and embarrassing adults alike. there is no specific meal time, rather just a continuously refilled buffet and a number of tables set up throughout the atrium for partygoers to sit and eat with friends and colleagues, some old some new.
though many off-duty aurors and ministry officials (including minister minchum himself) are in attendance, anyone looking hard enough will see that there are plenty of on-the-clock aurors there as well, sticking to the walls and doors and keeping a watchful eye on things. those in the know will also find that there are a number of well-known (though not official, by any means) members of the order of the phoenix in attendance, including the rumored leader herself, delphine rosewood.
tours of the ministry are offered to those interested, with a tour guide keeping everyone on the non-confidential path, of course! otherwise, everyone is encouraged to simply enjoy themselves! happy holidays!
ooc information:
essentially this is the “order party.” it’s hosted by the auror department and many well known members of the order of the phoenix are in attendance, making it pretty clear which side this bad boy is on. while quite literally every wizard has been invited, this party tends to be looked down upon by those in pureblood society - they have their own party, not to be meddled with by the clearly corrupt ministry and aurors, thank you very much.
the party is in the atrium only, with the exception of those going on a tour! this tour is hosted by a ministry official (feel free to write up a random npc if you feel like writing this up) and doesn’t go anywhere confidential, don’t get too excited ya crazy kids
if your character is at hogwarts over break, unfortunately, they will not be able to attend this event!
please tag all starters with abevent007 and abevent007c, and don’t forget to indicate in the open starters discord channel that your character is at hogwarts so people don’t have to put in aaaaaall that effort into clicking on your starter link and then finding out that it’s for someone they can’t interact with and then having to put so much work into moving their lil finger to the ‘x’ button... truly tragic! nobody wants that that’s far too much work!
this event will be taking place ooc from february 23rd to march 1st. you’re welcome to continue your event threads after march 1st, but all event starters must be posted between those dates!
don’t fret, you’re allowed to start/continue non-event threads while this event is occurring!
to make things fun and easy, here’s a list of npcs you can include in paras/threads! we’ve even included some faceclaims for inspiration! feel free to make up other npcs, we just thought it’d be fun to make it a lil easier on ya:
mousie matthews, the hot in town, up and coming writer for the daily prophet - she lives up to her name, often being called ‘mouse’ because she’s always sniffing out everyone’s business! fc: sandra oh
victor kiriakis, one of the lead members of the witch watcher division of the ministry. he might brag about some of the people he has brought in! enjoy his stoic demeanor and let evelyn & ellerie know if you talk to him, they’ve been looking for him all evening! fc: sterling k. brown
belle grant, a member of the wizengamot! belle is actually very easy-going, so if this career path interests you, try to get a word in with her, you won’t regret it! fc: cote de pablo
spencer west, a very grumpy auror. he hates these parties, but it’s part of the political side of the job. catch him complaining about the loud music & the ‘waste of money’. fc: sean bean
agnes harkness, top hit witch at your service. she loves a spicy hostage situation. don’t worry, you will have no trouble getting her to tell you some hot tips! fc: kathryn hahn
pietro zamolodchikova, the best member of the obliviator headquarters! he gets there faster than everyone else, so he has more cases under his belt than anyone else! strangely enough, he went on a case last year and returned looking completely different! strange world! fc: evan peters or aaron taylor johnson

Narrative of Born in the U.S.A.
*Narrative of Born in the U.S.A.*
In this entry, I will examine the critical questions: What central narrative does this artifact tell through its rhetorical elements? In doing so, what values does it promote and ignore (who does it include and exclude)? In which ways is this narrative (ethically) productive for society, in which ways is it limiting, and is it more productive or limiting?
To investigate these questions, I examined the song “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen as my rhetorical artifact. The song shares a critical narrative about how Vietnam War veterans were treated after they returned home. While the song was ethically productive it was widely misunderstood.
The song “Born in the U.S.A.” was released in 1984 by Bruce Springsteen as the lead song on his “Born in the U.S.A.” album. Springsteen’s song came into the world 9 years after the Vietnam War had ended, and while President Ronald Regan was in office. Though the song was released nine years after the end of the Vietnam war, the repercussions of the polarizing war were still lingering. The song became a leading hit off the album and onto America’s radios. The song's popularity soared but the public didn’t seem to understand the message behind the lyrics.
Palczewski, Ice, and Fritch (2012) explain that narratives are not the events themselves but stories we create about the event. The narratives we create around the event help us remember it. These narratives become our memories and two narratives from two different people from the same event do not have to be the same. Palczewski, Ice, and Fritch state that narratives “make sense of events of your life by placing them in relation to one another” (120). Foss (2004) explains narrative criticism and gives a step-by-step guide to analysis. These steps include identifying the setting, characters, and narrator of the rhetorical artifact. Along with identifying the main parts of the narrative you must also look deeper into the relations of the narrative.
The Narrative in the song “Born In the U.S.A” is critical towards how Vietnam war veterans were treated when they returned home. This narrative is made evident through the lyrics to the 1984 hit. Springsteen is known for his lyrics and how they often tell a story, this story begins by describing a man coming back to his hometown unsuccessfully. After the first chorus we learn more about where the man was before he came home, the lyrics say “they put a rifle in my hand, Sent me off to a foreign land, To go and kill the yellow man” (Springsteen 1:04). These lyrics tell the story of a man who was sent to war and now he has returned home. Due to the time the song was released and considering the lyric “go and kill the yellow man” it is clear that the war Springsteen is speaking of is the Vietnam War. The simplification of war in this quote demonstrates the narrator’s feelings about the war, to the narrator the war was about killing yellow men. The song jumps back to the man in his hometown after the war. The man is now being denied for a job at a refinery then is denied once again when the “V.A. man, He said, ‘Son, don't you understand?’” (1:37). Not only has the Veteran in our story been sent to war, once he got back he couldn’t even get his old job back. When the veteran seeks help from the V.A. man he also cannot help him with a job. After the chorus the story continues chronicling the war and the relational ties with Vietnam and other Vietnam War veterans .Lastly, the man is now forced to deal with the situation he has been put in. The last stanza of lyrics before a three time reprised chorus says “I'm ten years burning down the road, I've got nowhere to run and nowhere to go” (2:34). These lyrics show that the man is stuck and that it has been years and he is still stuck. The reprising chorus comes in to remind us this man was “Born in the U.S.A”. While this statement of being born in the U.S.A may seem like something the man is proud of because it is re-stated so many times when considering the narrative laid out, It is clear the man is actually calling the U.S.A. out because they caused his problems.
The Narrative in the song “Born In the U.S.A” is critical towards how Vietnam war veterans were treated when they returned home, This narrative is ethically productive however it is commonly misunderstood. The narrative is productive because it criticizes the U.S.A. and its treatment of the people who fought for our country. While the war was going on it was not uncommon to criticize the reasoning behind it. This song brings back those original critiques and adds to them almost ten years later. It is important for people to question their country and their motives for going to war. While this narrative is ethically productive it was commonly misunderstood, making it not completely productive practically. To the individuals that looked deeper into the song and read the lyrics it worked. For the people who just heard the song on the radio and did not think about anything but the upbeat tone to the song, it was misunderstood as a celebration of the U.S.A.. While the song is critical in it’s lyrics, that doesn’t necessarily mean it to be for haters of the U.S.A. only. It is possible to take this critique and still be patriotic, a true patriot should critique the country they love. However, to some people protesting war is extremely unpatriotic.
Gustainis and Hahn chronicle some other rhetorical examples of anti-war protest. These examples come from a time during the Vietnam war. Much of the reasoning behind why so many Vietnam Anti-War protests were taken as a failure rhetorically was because of the approach by protesters. Many protestors failed to take into consideration their audience who was mostly conservative. Gustainis and Hahn cite the use of obscenity and desecration of the flag as some of the protesters' big mistakes. On the use of obscenity Gustainis and Hahn state “the use of public obscenity alienates and digusts many American citizens'' (209). The use of actions many conservative American’s would find offensive or distasteful is not an effective way to get a point across rhetorically. When applying this thinking to the rhetorical artifact “Born in the U.S.A.” it is evident that Springsteen’s language was chosen to reflect a common way of speaking and does not use obscenity to call out the U.S.A.. Springsteen effectively used his language to create a narrative that told a story of a man beaten down by the war. A story is a far more effective tool for an anti-war protest.
In summary, the narrative found in the song “Born in the U.S.A.” proves itself to be critical of how Vietnam war veterans were treated when they came home, especially when an analysis of the lyrics is done. The narrative is ethically productive in it’s critique of the country even though it can be misunderstood.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Funniest Guest Cast Characters
https://ift.tt/3oTakdX
Warning: contains Brooklyn Nine-Nine spoilers.
Brooklyn Nine Nine is one of the funniest sitcoms around thanks to its fantastic ensemble cast and just-broad-enough humour blended with almost-realistic cop show elements. But that great regular cast are supported by an equally brilliant array of recurring characters and guest stars. In this list, we’re celebrating the funniest of the show’s less often-seen characters, those guest appearances who’ve turned up once or twice to inject a fresh burst of comic energy into the show.
Note that we’re not counting regular recurring characters like Adrian Pimento, Madeline Wuntch, or Kevin Cozner, aka Mr Raymond Holt. If they turn up more than once a year, or in more than three episodes in one season, they’re off the list.
12. Adam Sandler, played by himself in Operation: Broken Feather, Season 1, Episode 15
Adam Sandler’s appearance as himself in Season One is beautifully self-deprecating as well as funny. His deadpan delivery of “I’m a serious person” is hilarious in just the right way – of course the real Sandler is, presumably, as serious and as complex as anyone else, but he knows his own public persona and just how to play on it in the right way to raise a different kind of laugh. The interest in antiquities, the planned film about the Russian Revolution, it’s all funny – and somewhat undercut, even more amusingly, by his taunting of Jake straight afterwards. The whole scene did help to flush out a criminal though, so it wasn’t a total loss for Jake.
Funniest moment: Admitting his “serious” Russian Revolution film features Kevin James as Trotsky, and a wife who doesn’t wear a bra through the whole film.
11. Geoffrey Hoytsman, played by Chris Parnell in two episodes in Season 2
When Jake’s lawyer girlfriend Sophia uses her boss as a transparent excuse to break up with him (by going on ‘pause’), Jake wilfully misunderstands and decides that the boss is the key problem, so he sets off to make the man like him. It all goes horribly wrong when Jake finds Hoytsman snorting cocaine in the bathroom, which Hoytsman claims he was doing accidentally while screaming loudly that Jake is arresting him to the whole room of lawyers. Sophia somehow still ends up blaming Jake – probably because she simply wanted to break up with him in the first place – and Hoytsman ends up returning to take Jake hostage and quite seriously threaten his life later in the season. Parnell’s over-the-top performance as a character who is, of course, high for much of the time, is what really sells the character.
Funniest moment: Sniffing cocaine off his collar in the middle of the police precinct.
10. Jessica Day, played by Zooey Deschanel in The Night Shift, Season 4, Episode 4
Back in 2016, both New Girl and Brooklyn Nine Nine were active Fox sitcoms, so the network decided to do a crossover event in which the New Girl characters travelled to New York City and ran into the 99. Most of the crossover scenes actually ended up in the New Girl episode, but Zooey Deschanel’s character Jess Day did make a brief appearance in the otherwise stand-alone Brooklyn Nine Nine half of the crossover. While the New Girl episode provided a lot more context for Jess’s feelings about New York and her stress level surrounding Schmidt’s mom’s car and the soup she’s carrying, her appearance as an apparently slightly nutty woman who resists Jake’s attempts to commandeer the car is an entertaining interlude during the half hour.
Funniest moment: Insisting that Jake’s oath to serve and protect applies to her soup.
9. Philip Davidson, played by Sterling K. Brown in The Box, Season 5, Episode 14
If this were a list of the show’s ‘best’ guest characters, rather than ‘funniest’, the top ranked would surely be Philip Davidson, played by Sterling K. Brown. ‘The Box’ is a tight, taught bottle episode that takes full advantage of Brooklyn Nine Nine’s hybrid status as both sitcom and cop show, and Brown’s Davidson forms a strong third of a triangle in this three-header with Holt and Peralta. It’s a really strong performance, but given that he’s playing a tough-to-crack murder suspect, not really the funniest, exactly. Still, he gets a good few laughs when appropriate over the course of a really engaging half hour of comedy/cop show crossover.
Funniest moment: When Davidson finally cracks, he cracks hard – his confession is equal parts triumphant, cathartic, and hilarious.
8. Karen Haas, played by Maya Rudolph in Coral Palms Parts 1&2, Season 4, Episodes 1&2
Maya Rudolph has a good line going in slightly weary authority figures (see also: The Good Place). Handling Holt and Peralta while they’re in witness protection is not an easy job and her exasperation at Jake’s refusal to accept his situation is well played. Haas is really funny, though, when she starts bringing her own issues into her official duties, clearly trying to get permission to cheat on her husband from someone, anyone – and Holt is happy to oblige.
Funniest moment: Whoever it is she wants to sleep with is “really young” – something that clearly shouldn’t be funny, but the face Rudolph pulls as she says it is what sells it.
7. Lin-Manuel Miranda as David Santiago in The Golden Child, Season 6, Episode 9
Miranda is marvellously smarmy as Amy’s too-perfect brother, her demanding parents’ favourite, who snubs popular culture and shows off by saving people’s lives (including Amy’s own husband). Amy’s delighted reaction when he’s arrested for cocaine possession and deep disappointment when he turns out to be innocent are highlights, but the funniest scene by far is the dance-off between David and Amy, in which both comprehensively demonstrate that dancing is not among the Santiago family’s many strengths.

The Best Brooklyn Nine-Nine Episodes

Funniest moment: David thinks elbows should form a bigger part of a dance routine than they really should.
6. Frederick, played by Nick Offerman in Ava, Season 3, Episode 8
Any time we meet Captain Holt’s friends and family, many of whom share his stoic, Vulcan-like demeanour, it’s always hilarious. JK Simmons as his old friend Dillman very nearly made the list, but he was just pipped to the post by Ron Swanson – sorry, Nick Offerman – as Holt’s ex-boyfriend. There’s a lot of crossover between Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine Nine among the cast and crew and Offerman isn’t even the only Parks & Rec alumnus to appear on this list, but he’s probably the one whose appearance most quickly calls to mind his earlier character. The idea that Holt’s ex-boyfriend is Ron F-ing Swanson is just genius. OK, Frederick lacks Swanson’s magnificent moustache (though he has a glorious beard) and he’s even more brusque and stand-off-ish, but he’s a perfect match for Holt, even more in their post-break-up mutual antagonism than we imagine they were in their relationship.
Funniest moment: His straight-faced insistence at the door that they have a “wooden-duck situation”.
5. Mark Devereaux, played by Nathan Fillion in Serve & Protect, Season 4, Episode 14
It’s always funny any time police characters in a cop show visit the set of a TV cop show, and for added meta humour, in this case the actor playing the fictional detective is played by an actor who works on a cop show (albeit as a non-cop character). Phew! That’s a lot of layers of meta. Nathan Fillion’s pompous star who apparently thinks playing a detective makes him a detective is very funny, and it gets better when it turns out that was a ruse to cover up his own petty criminal activity before he folds like wet paper. It’s just a shame we didn’t get to see more of him.
Funniest moment: Devereaux tries turning on the angry detective act from his show to cover up his own crime, only to be confronted with quite a lot more than a “shred” of evidence and fold immediately.
4. Eleanor Horstweil, played by Kathryn Hahn in Hostage Situation, Season 3, Episode 11
We heard a lot about Boyle’s ex-wife over the first couple of seasons, partly because Boyle was still living in her basement, hanging out with her new husband Hercules. We knew what sort of person Eleanor was when Boyle explained that he gets the beach house from December to February. When we finally meet her in the flesh, Kathryn Hahn does not disappoint – Eleanor is surely one of the most purely horrible characters we’ve seen on the show (and yes, we’re including all the murderers). She hits a 90-year-old priest with her car and then destroys Boyle’s frozen sperm, all with no apparent sense of guilt, and she largely gets away with it, too. But she does it all with a perfectly deadpan expression and carefree attitude, each horrifying act funnier that the last.
Funniest moment: She goes further than Jake ever thought she would when she “shoots a hostage” – i.e., throws some of Boyle’s sperm down the drain.
3. Seth Dozerman, played by Bill Hader in New Captain, Season 3, Episode 1
Bill Hader’s screentime on the show is relatively brief, but he is hilarious from start to finish, attacking the squad with every shouted command like he’s firing metaphorical bullets at them. It might actually have been really cool to see the squad try to deal with him as their Captain for more than one episode, with his extremely demanding requirements and very highly strung personality, but on the other hand, perhaps this is a joke that works better in small quantities. Any character whose dying words are “Tell my wife I love her work ethic” is probably a character better enjoyed for a shorter period of time.
Funniest moment: Both heart attacks are very funny, but the first (non-fatal) one just pips it for the sheer suddenness of it.
2. Caleb, played by Tim Meadows in three episodes in Seasons 5 and 6
Jake is shocked to discover his only friend in maximum security prison is a cannibal (though he would prefer to be identified as a wood-worker), having assumed everyone in protective custody was a wrongly accused police officer. Caleb is surely Brooklyn Nine Nine’s best streak of really, really dark humour – not only did he murder and eat nine and a half people, they were small children too. Every reference he makes to his “nightmare” past is sickly hilarious, and gets worse and worse every time, including a reference to his “skin suit”. But he really does care for Jake, even if he still kind of wants to eat him. The sheer audacity of the black humour surrounding this character is fantastic and always funny.
Funniest moment: Caleb shows that he has a softer side when he saves Jake’s life – but he immediately deeply regrets it and would not do it again.
1. Doug Judy, played by Craig Robinson in multiple episodes (one episode or two-parter per year)
Yes, we carefully defined a recurring character as someone who is either in more than three episodes or who appears more than once a year specifically so that we could include Craig Robinson‘s Doug Judy. It’s our list and we make the rules. There’s something twistedly beautiful about Jake and Doug Judy’s tender but tense friendship, even in the early years when Judy is constantly double-crossing poor Jake. The two of them have perfect comic chemistry, and each running gag in their friendship, especially their fondness for swaggering out in a new outfit or disguise, just gets funnier and funnier. Long may Doug Judy continue to turn up roughly once every twelve months to harass his long suffering best friend.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Funniest moment: Having escaped yet again, Doug Judy leaves Jake a pre-recorded message in a karaoke booth – complete with a full hour of pre-recorded singing for Jake to duet with.

Space - space is INSANE. After even an hour of a wikipedia research, you’ll get sucked in forever.
Plants - try Wicked Plants by Amy Stewart*, The Book of Herbal Wisdom by Matthew Wood*, or Botany in a Day by Thomas J. Elpel*; helpful if your characters don’t have access to modern medicine!
Baking - not only will let you create something edible (YUM!) but you get to take out your frustration on kneading/stirring/whisking for a bit. Baking is all about precision, while cooking is more loosey-goosey. Any characters you can think of that are the same way?
Psychology - self explanatory; You are a human and your characters are supposed to be human-like (unless they’re dogs or aliens or cryptids or something cool), so psychology can only help in all of these instances. Read into gender, school systems, honesty, willpower, etc.
Anatomy - self explanatory; Characters get stabbed, shot, punched, etc. all the time... a little research on anatomy and physiology will go a long way in knowing which arteries are where, why bruises change color, what happens if you get punched in the face, etc.
MISCELLANY
Avatar the Last Airbender (watch it at least once if you never have)
Adventure Time (silly and heartwarming and weird)
Make playlists for your different wips! It’s distracting and relaxing! I use spotify!
Rewrite a scene from one of your favorite books. In your ideal world, what would happen instead?
Fill out character sheets! I can send you some if you need ideas!
Try out a website like WorldAnvil and get your story up there!
Write a fan-fiction! Pick one of your favorite stories/movies/shows and make your own character. What happens when you plop them in your favorite chapter/episode/scene?
Watch a video/listen to a podcast about writing! My dad got me into Brandon Sanderson’s youtube videos about writing, and I’ve been watching one during my “lunch break” every day.
Try comics! (Webtoon is an excellent app for reading them on your phone/on-the-go! I’d recommend Heartstopper, Let’s Play, Purple Hyacinth, SubZero, Lore Olympus, Castle Swimmer, Miss Abbott and the Doctor, Drawn to You by Hat-Chan, Third Shift Society, Blood Ink, Hooky, Muted, The Devil is a Handsome Man, Ava’s Demon, and tons more!)
Most of all, don’t feel pressure to publish anything. Don’t feel like you have to be productive right now. Keep your head above water and try to make time to write every day, even if it’s just a sentence or two. Hope these help!
-Kaylie-
(Books with asterisks are on my TBR (to be read) pile/list, but I haven’t read them yet, or have only read bits of them!)

k so if you met C on Grey’s message boards that leads to the obvious question of who were (are) her fav greys characters and who did (does) she ship???
She actually isn’t super into fandom. I think she was mostly there to defend Erica Hahn from all the haters and homophobes as her character was coming out of the closet. I suppose she shipped Callica in the most casual definition of the word. I was the one who was actually involved in the fandom. She just liked to go onto all the homophobic threads and fight the assholes. 😆😆😆

Happy Holidays! I have read 120+ books in 2017, and know almost every book in the bookstore. My fav thing is making people read books. So. Have a present.
Bold means I like that book the most, italic means it has some striking similarities to SNK. Note that the categories are fluid, and that this selection is mostly limited to books that I’ve read and personally liked. All books are young adult/teen fiction (YA) unless otherwise specified. Longer description doesn’t necessarily mean better book. The titles link to either the short story or the goodreads page, where you can (usually) preview the first few chapters of each book. ASK ME IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR WANT MORE YOU COWARDS.
PART ONE of ?
Required Reading, sorry I don’t make the rules – short stories available online
A Memory of Wind – Rachel Swirsky – a retelling of Iphigenia at Aulis. This is where my blog title comes from.
The Witch of Duva – Leigh Bardugo – warning; cannibalism and gingerbread and missing girls.
The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas - Ursula K. Leguin – would you keep one person’s life miserable in order to keep everyone else’s life happy?
Death by Landscape - Margaret Atwood – vanishing girls are my favorite girls.
Some of Us Had Been Threatening Our Friend Colby – Donald Barthelme - absurdism: one of my favorite things.
The Shawl – Louise Erdrich: wolves and sisters and bad parents :’)
Libri Sybillini – me! – my esoteric, overly-elaborate post-crystal(ish) Annie fic that I haven’t updated in two years ;) always room for shameless self-promotion here on this blog.
Bitch I’m Here for Annie Leonhardt
Archivist Wasp – Nicole Kornher-Stace – read this book or I will Find You, “His deadpan and her sarcasm sailed right past each other, strangers passing in the night.” This is one of the most literary YA books I’ve ever read. Don’t judge this one by its cover and its obscure publisher. This one rocks everyone’s socks. Friggin here for Wasp, my girl.
The Archived – Victoria Schwab – fairly serious, recommended for how well it deals with grief and responsibility, sad girl Mackenzie, and mascara-wearing boy neighbor. Just, like, stab my heart. Read this Or Else.
Reboot – Amy Tintera – YA with sex mention in final book – pretty serious, recommended for cold main character Wren and the cute softboi love interest, also the premise that kids who come back from the dead have to become supersoldiers.
A Study in Charlotte – Brittany Cavallaro –  older YA due to drug addiction, sexual assault mention, etc. Hilarious but serious. Recommended for very hard and dark topics, troubled Charlotte Holmes and sweet softboi  Jamie Watson. Also detectives. Also pain. Read this Or Else.
Shade Me – Jennifer Brown – older YA/New Adult (NA) Warning: Nikki Kill, like the noir detectives whose tropes she’s upending, has a lot of undescribed casual sex. Also, child prostitution figures largely in this story. Also, like any brooding noir character, she chainsmokes. Very serious. But oh god gotta love her standoffishness, and the dark urban topics.
Trust Me, I’m Lying – Mary Elizabeth Summer – funny and serious, here for the sass, the con, the moral ambiguity, and the heartbreak.
The Girl is Murder – Kathryn Miller Haines - funny and serious, here for the WWII home front detective girl who has to move to a new school and investigate a murder among its ranks.
Julia Vanishes – Catherine Egan – YA with mention of the mc having sex – funny and angsty, here for the witty, morally ambiguous main character making bad decisions, also the pureness, the sincerity of the book overall. PAIN. Read this Or Else.
Girls Made of Snow and Glass – Melissa Bashardoust - haven’t read it yet, but I just borrowed it from the library and I hear serious praise and serious feminism. Here for the 17-year-old stepmother with a heart made of glass, the 15 year-old stepdaughter with a body made of snow, complicated relationships, and hard girls who just want to be loved.
The Grisha Trilogy – Leigh Bardugo – sex mentions, rape mention, funny and serious, here for the grumpy old grandma in a teenager’s body Alina Starkov, also Baghra. And the Darkling J. And Genya. Everything. Read this Or Else.
The Language of Thorns – Leigh Bardugo – dark and lush original fairy tale anthology says it all. There is cannibalism. Feminism. Angry lonely girls. Delicious. Read this Or Else.
The Lie Tree – Frances Hardinge – serious but flawless, no romance. Here for the complicated, neglectful father-daughter relationship. Here for the 1800s paleontology. The tackling of ingrained misogyny. The hardcore FEMINISM. The bad choices made J. And of course, the barely-there otherworldliness. Read this or Else.
M.F.K. – Nilah Magruder – Webcomic/graphic novel – serious and slightly funny. Here for the gorgeous art and the standoffish main character. And the softboi sidekick. No romance, so far.
The Flavia Albia detective series – Lindsey Davis – Adult detective series – sex mentions, narrative is scathingly hilarious, but there are serious things. Here for the sardonic Albiola, female detective in Rome, who had a very hard childhood, and at one point in the first book impales a man’s hand on a table with a knife. One key difference from Annie – she is not a cat person, pooh-pooh. Read this Or Else.
The Forbidden Wish – Jessica Khoury – mostly serious, here for immortal sad djinn girl who had to betray her best friend/habiba centuries ago.
A Creature of Moonlight –  Rebecca Hahn – mostly no romance, serious and mythical, here for girls who turn into trees and walk their own path. Not of this world. Read this Or Else.
A Wicked Thing – Rhiannon Thomas – serious, no romance in the first book, here for sleeping beauty and serious feminism. Beautiful. Thought-provoking. Read this Or Else.
A Study in Scarlet Women – Sherry Thomas – adult detective series, sex mentions, serious, here for fem Sherlock and feminism.
Girl Waits With Gun – adult detective/police series, serious, vague sex mention, here for sad 30-something mc investigating things in the 1910s. The main character and her sisters were all real people, and the stories in this series follow real cases she solved.
The Name of the Rose – Umberto Eco – Old monk and young monk investigate a murder in an abbey with the best library since Alexandria and uncover the secrets of the universe instead. Sorta. This inspired an snk au of mine that I never got to use :’) HIDDEN LIBRARIES AND SEMIOTICS.
A Northern Light – Jennifer Donnelly – sex mentions, serious, here for servant girl investigating a drowning death, feminism, and forging out on her own.
The Agency – YS. Lee, serious and a little funny, here for the all-female detective agency, the outsider mc detective (hint, she’s not fully white), and Victorian London.
The Lady Grace Mysteries, Middle-Grade (MG) fiction, half-half serious-funny. Here for 14 year old Lady Grace Cavendish, who is the ward and a Maid of Honor of Queen Elizabeth. She solves serious mysteries and untangles political intrigue with her entertainer friend and servant friend. Diary format. I loved this series, BUT ALL BOOKS AFTER THE SIXTH HAVEN’T BEEN PUBLISHED IN THE USA ARGH. I will be buying them on amazon. Sometime.
The Last Namsara – Kristen Ciccarelli – YA with sexual harassment scenes, intense abuse of slaves, very slightly Arab-coded (though wtf is it with the country’s name), with the slave ethnicity slightly Germanic-coded, well-navigated slave-master romance. Asha, a princess whose rendezvous with dragons at age 8 unknowingly caused her capital city to nearly burn to the ground, is now a bitter, callous, kindness-starved, severely-scarred dragon hunter trying to escape arranged marriage to the brutal, abusive commander of her fathers army by hunting the First Dragon. I loved the ship (softish boi, hard girl).
A Thousand Nights – E.K. Johnston – sex mentions, no romance but there is arranged marriage, serious. Here for the best Scheherazade reimagining I’ve ever encountered in my entire short life. Here for the appreciation of women’s work. Here for how the author dealt with the king, who is possessed by a demon, completely – the demon feeds off human creativity and his brides’ life energy. Here for the pre-Islamic tribal Arabic setting and the theology of smallgods, who are usually people who helped the tribe in some way, now deceased. Here for the strength of the unnamed main character, the strength of the love between her and her half-sister, and how her half-sister gets people to pray to her and essentially make her a living smallgod, in this way enabling her to face off against the djinn-king. Here for the beautiful, aching writing. Here for this story that gives voice to the traditionally-voiceless, exalts the nameless numbers of women who create the world. Read this Or Else.
