What is Miraculous’s self contradictory philosophy on consent?
This topic has been on my writing list for a while, and would probably be worth rewatching all 5 seasons and taking detailed notes! That being said, I think Ladybug’s reaction to the attempted kiss in “Felix” is a pretty good microcosm of the issue:
Tumblr media
Unlike our heroine, we, the audience, know that this is just not true: as Chat Noir, Adrien crosses Ladybug’s boundaries on multiple occasions - including several attempts to kiss her, despite her obvious lack of enthusiasm.
So why is it that one undesired kiss makes us so uneasy, while others are easily written off as quirky?
The answer, of course, is that the plot itself wants us to root for Adrien; and, in order to prepare for future plot twists and revelations, be (at least temporarily) wary of Felix. Consent is a somewhat fluid concept in Miraculous; not out of maliciousness (at least I certainly hope so!), but because it serves a bigger narrative purpose.
Let's take a closer look at how the notion of consent is declined through two radically different character categories: on the one hand, our heroes; and on the other hand, our antagonists.
I. The Love Square: all’s fair in love and plot
Let’s start off our analysis with the obvious: the Love Square is meant to be. You know it, I know it, everyone is Paris knows it. Most importantly, the writers have known it since the beginning; and it is their job to sell us their romance, through compelling interactions.
Part of this effort was to make Chat Noir fall in love with Ladybug almost immediately, and be very forthcoming about his interest - something she rarely reciprocates during the first seasons, because if she did, the show would have ended years ago and I would not be writing this instead of loading the dishwasher like I’m supposed to. Chat Noir’s infatuation with the spotted heroine takes the form of many many many MANY flirty comments, outright love declarations and, on a couple of occasions, unwelcome kissing attempts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It wouldn’t be fair to argue Ladybug is 100% closed off to his attempts. But as the seasons go by, and other scenaristic stakes build up, she does become more and more frustrated with them. To his credit, Chat knows when to back off when she expresses discomfort or states her love for “““another boy”””… But he is always quick to try his luck again, which in turns brings even more frustration, until Ladybug finally and rightfully snaps in S4.
Does that mean we, the public, see Chat Noir as a dangerous sociopath? Of course not. For the most part, we accept that his insistence is amusing at best, and harmlessly annoying at worst, because that’s what the show wants us to accept. Concretely, this gives a situation à la “Kuro Neko”: the episode defends the idea that Chat Noir’s imperfections, including his misguided and at times overbearing love for his partner, is a crucial part of what makes them such a good team.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And let’s not forget Marinette herself! While several members of the Girl Gang (namely Alya) routinely and jokingly call her out on her stalking, we mainly get to reflect on how this affects her - not her clueless crush. Her obsession is always always framed as embarrassing, funny, and even cute - classic teenage girl behaviour, am I right ladies?
Tumblr media
So, there’s clearly a double standard between genders, which is also true with the antagonists - but it is only a secondary concern of mine. What matters most is that we accept Chat and Marinette’s behaviour, or more precisely this framing of their behaviour by the scenario, for two main reasons:
Because they’re our heroes, and although they are flawed, they can’t be too bad!
Because the romantic endgame we all know is coming “justifies” their actions. If these two are meant to be together, does it really matter if they mess up along the way?
This second point is best exemplified by the contrast between how we perceive consent when it applies to the Love Square, and how we perceive it when it comes to Adrigami / Kagadrien.
Having accepted her mother’s expectations, Kagami sees a future with Adrien and is therefore trying to push the relationship in this direction; she is not afraid to take the lead and generally does so through physical touch, attempting to kiss him before he’s ready and manually correcting his posture when sketching him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Is Kagami crossing a few lines here? Sure. But it’s nothing a teenager wouldn’t do, and she is a lot less persistent than Chat. Yet we can’t help but notice and sympathise with Adrien’s unease. We perceive Kagami’s behaviour and the reaction it elicits differently not because she is a bad person, but because she is but a secondary love interest - a temporary distraction from the grand love story we’ve been invested in since the beginning. We have no trouble accepting the message the writers are sending us through these interactions: Kagadrien is not a toxic or abusive ship, it’s just not going to work out.
II. The Antagonists: Red flags and black marks
In many ways, love and intimacy are driving forces of Miraculous’ plot. After all, isn’t it grief over the loss of a spouse that started this whole debacle?
The heroes we root for on the battlefield are the same dumb teenagers we desperately want to see smooch, and so naturally, we start to equate morality and romance. For the writing team, this is a great tool to make heroes easily identifiable and, conversely, signal to the audience that a new antagonist has joined the chat. This phenomenon can be observed from the very first episodes, and is best embodied by a character we all know and… Uh… Definitely feel some type of way about.
Let’s not tip-toe around the issue: Chloé, at least in the early seasons, is a typical mean girl. She is a bully, a pretentious and spoiled kid, and generally rude to everyone around her. But do you know what her worst crime is? She has the absolute nerve to be in love with Adrien!
Chloé might be responsible for half of the Paris akumatisations so far, but it would be incorrect to state Marinette dislikes her purely because of her nastiness. Their personal rivalry over the prettiest boy in school is central to their original conflict, and plays a key role in shaping our initial understanding of Chloé’s part as a minor antagonist. When the show repeatedly has her throwing herself at Adrien, calling him by aggravating nicknames, and plotting to eliminate her pig-tailed competition, it isn’t trying to establish her as a viable romantic option; rather, it uses her disrespect for Adrien’s individuality and personal space to reinforce our conviction that she is bad news, and strengthen our sympathy towards Marinette at the same time.
Tumblr media
In the grand scheme of things, however, Chloé isn’t a huge threat to our heroes. The real issue comes with the introduction of a major antagonist, one that has the motivation and brain cells to do some actual damage (take some notes, Hawkmoth).
Felix’s debut episode is… Well, to be fair, I think it is brilliant in a lot of ways! Once you shine the Sentimonster light on his “gratuitous” and “petty” shenanigans, they take on a much deeper and more interesting meaning. But this introduction certainly doesn’t do Felix any favours from a moral standpoint, and that is absolutely done on purpose: these 20 minutes are jam-packed with information aiming to convince us, the audience, that this boy Absolutely 100% Cannot Be Trusted, so that we don’t fall off our chairs when the “Strikeback” fiasco happens. And what better way is there to make us uncomfortable than having him basically molest our heroine on screen?
Seriously, look at the way this scene is composed. The creepy look in his eyes, Ladybug literally having her back against the wall, the music, everything. None of the other instances we mentioned throughout this analysis get this tense. Even younger viewers, who might not necessarily understand what is at play here, instinctively know that this is as bad as it gets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And you know what? This would be fair if Felix was meant to be this awful, terrible, psychopathic villain that kicks grandmas down the stairs and eats puppies for breakfast. But he isn’t, and that’s where you lose your audience.
By the end of S5 (or the middle… these releases are getting confusing), we are invited to look at Felix not as a dangerous, hardened criminal, but as a kid fighting tooth and nail to free his fellow Sentimonsters and himself from an oppressive authority that wants them dead or under total control. This explanation makes him sympathetic to us; his conflicting feelings about his own actions make him a prime candidate for a redemption arc; and his true personality, which shines through his crush on Kagami and his impromptu musical number, make him an endearing character. So, we can all agree to like him now, right?
Tumblr media
WRONG. Just because we understand the message S5 is trying to convey doesn’t mean we don’t remember what happened in S3, back when presenting Felix as an antagonist took priority over preparing his redemption arc. Many people still have, and will always have, major issues with his character because of this one scene and the very raw emotional response it successfully elicited. I, for one, adore Felix; but I completely understand how others may have trouble believing that he is genuinely fighting for freedom and bodily autonomy, given how quick he was to disregard Ladybug’s. They have every right to feel that way and, if I’m being honest, the writing team kind of did it to itself.
Closing thoughts
Like I said in the opening, I am sure there are many other situations to delve into, characters to psychoanalyse, and ways to interpret the examples I mentioned. An exhaustive essay would take pages and pages, and this is already way too long as it is, so let’s wrap up with a few personal impressions:
Is Miraculous bad / problematic / worth canceling over these scenaristic decisions?
The answer is no, obviously. Trying to overly sanitise kids’ shows is a dangerous slippery slope that has led to the cancellation of some of my personal favourite gems for “““arbitrary””” reasons (everyone involved with canceling The Owl House is on my personal hit list). But I do think it is important to take in stories with your critical brain turned on, and be aware of some of the messages they might be trying to convey.
In this case, Miraculous writers are less interested in consent as a real-life issue than they are in what it can do for their show, scenaristically and thematically. It doesn’t make them evil, but it does make for a contradictory, and at times uncomfortable, final product.
2. Does that mean any of these characters are horrible monsters that should be burnt at the stake?
Of course not! They are dumb 14-year-olds just starting to navigate life and love. Whatever problematic behaviour they’re exhibiting now is just par for the course: they will grow out of it. In fact, they are already starting to grow out of it, with some help from the plot and a chair:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ultimately, what matters most is not where a character starts from; it is how they learn from their mistakes and grow into a better person.
I am hopeful that all 4 of them are going in the right direction. Chloé is unlikely to make any progress given how Thomas Astruc feels about her, but hey, everything’s possible.
So, here you go, Anon! I hope this has been an interesting read and worth the wait!

I would be lying if I said that sometimes I wasn't sad that my otp isn't endgame.
But considering that finale where even the shippers are disappointed and facing the music that the writing sucks and the endgame ship is unhealthy.
Like I am happy now...Every canon ship in this stupid show sucks and I am happy MariLuka and Kagadrien weren't ruined by canon.
I feel like I finally got justice...And my two precious ships will always be safe with me and I will continue to write...Continue expressing the melody of my heart and encourage my peers to do the same.

Lukanette and Adrigami for the grade thing!
Yes, Lukanette💙💚💙💚^^
Cons
-As of Crocoduel, it’s been made clear that they are just friends now.
-Marinette likes Adrien.
-Some people may view it as Luka deserving better than Marinette.
-Luka often supports Marinette no matter what, which can lead to Luka disregarding his own feelings in the process.
-This wasn’t much of a problem, but they were 2 years apart, which COULD have meant that they wouldn’t work too well due to a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old having two different mindsets a maturity level. However, now they claimed to be the same age.
Pros
-Marinette has shown that she is ready for a relationship.
-Luka is more understanding of Marinette and her decisions.
-Lukanette can be shown as a mature and tranquil relationship.
-It has been shown that Luka and his methods calms Marinette down.
-Lukanette can also be another good example of “yin and yang”.
-Maybe there’s a chance that they can get back together someday?
-Luka has shown time and time again that he’s a trustworthy person to Marinette.
Grade: A+ (OTP)
Tumblr media
Ok, Adrigami now...
Cons
-Sometimes, it seems like Kagami doesn’t understand Adrien or his true self at all.
-Sometimes, it can seem like that Kagami tries to decide things for Adrien and control him.
-What does Kagami really like about Adrien?
-A good majority of fans sees Kagami as a Lesbian.
-Kagami can be out of character at times.
-It interferes with the love square (even though I personally don’t have too much of a problem with it).
-It seems that Adrien doesn’t truly love Kagami.
Pros
-Kagami won’t put up with Adrien’s crap, whether if he’s being a brat, being a nice guy or just not being honest with her or himself.
-Kagami can bring the best out of Adrien. Even vice versa.
-Their fencing buddies.
-They have similar backgrounds and struggles as far as their families.
Grade: Between B (It's Really Cute) and C (Not A Bad Ship)
Tumblr media
Conclusion:
In my opinion, I feel like Lukanette and Adrigami broke up WAY too soon! Like, literally BOTH couples only had ONE episode being together! I still hope that one of both couples might get back together again one day and try things again, even though I know that’s probably not going to happen.
Despite what the show and the creators/writers want us to think, both Lukanette and Adrigami to me are interesting pairings and they should if had a fair chance OUTSIDE OF ONE EPISODE to be couples. They both should have been side plots in all or most of the episodes in season 4 and THEN maybe break up later down the line? That’s just my thoughts anyways.
Afterthoughts:
Sometimes, I don’t even see the point of adding Luka and Kagami to the show if they were going to settle things this fast...

Yeah after the New York special i’m over Adrienette. This isn’t me hating the special I loved it, it’s more so my reasons on no longer shipping Adrien and Marinette and please watch before reading.
One: Over three freaking seasons Marinette still acts the same way she has around Adrien. Having trouble with her words and not knowing how to react around him. First season it was cute and sweet, but it got overplayed.
Two: The show is literally making marinette a stalker when it comes to this boy. In the beginning of the special she took a photo of him that she never seen before. 😑 You mean to tell me that she found every photo of him ever sense he day debuted as a modeler. I love marinette but her obsession with him is not cute anymore it’s really bad and the producers keep making it only get worse.
Three: Adrien............ this is the most dense boy I have ever sence in a show. Everybody in that class knows marinette likes him and in the special it seemed like he would finally notice her attraction towards him, but nope. He truly sees marinette as A FRIEND and at this point just leave it at that cause it’ll be till season ten till he sees her feelings.
Four: after the special I started to realize Luka and Kagami make up for these two so much then they do each other. Luka is so kind, honest, sweet and so much more to marinette yet she doesn’t pursue him cause of her obsession with adrien. Unlike marinette, kagami makes it clear to Adrien that she wants to be with him and if he finally gives up on ladybug he could pursue her. Tbh I think he is low key starting to catch feelings for her after season three and in the beginning of the special. Probably cause he sees her as possibly something more then friends then he does with marinette.
Five: Marinette wanted to leave her feelings for Adrien behind and just be friends, but it’s became clear in the ny special that her friends keep pushing into something she’s trying to work on. Her feelings for him are there, but she should handle them the best way she should and not let others her push her feelings to be something that should be her to decide on her terms.
It may be the fact that this show has had three season and many years have gone by and the main characters still have not had a single kind of moment to where they could pursue a relationship and introducing new characters only to make me ship them with other characters sense they haven’t done anything romantic worthy with each other.
Overall the ny special was amazing for the show leaving many questions, I love the characters personalities the show brings, the way they handle the miraculous and the overall objective is for ladybug and chat noir to save the day while defeating hawkmoth, and Adrinette may be cannon, but I think the characters would have more developement if they were to be with other people. To me this ship is barely staying a float and if season 4 don’t show some kind of development they might as well sink, but anything else out of the show besides relationships is great.

“I actually don’t mind Luka or Kagami. I just wish the fact of them possibly getting together with Marinette and/or Adrien was more of a mystery rather than confirmed it won’t because the love square is the endgame. I mean, what’s wrong with them being with other people??? So what if they didn’t end up together??? It’s not the end of the world if they didn’t end up together you guys. Things happen and people move on. I honestly think that would be a good answer for kids.

Miraculous ladybug love square part 3
As for ladybug’s treatment of chat. She cares about him. They are clearly friends and she can play with his jokes sometimes as well. She trusts him to get his side of the job done most of the time. She doesn’t treat him with kid gloves andcan get angry at him but also make up with him. She had faith that it wasnt the real chat in copycat. She proclaimed he was important in antibug on the roof and was willing to risk her identity to untie himfrom a pole. and she trusted he’d catch adrien if she was unable to. She isn’t the best listener when it comes to chat. assuming his flirting wasn’t serious. Didn’t trust his advice when facing volphina, or antibug, or miraculer. she often leaves him out of the lop but it can be argued thats more tikki and master fu’s call on the situation. She does worry about and care about him. even if sometimes she might think its a given he’ll be there. and her comfort to express her emotions means sometimes she can go a bit too far like when she said she didn’t trust him anymore and she didn’t think about how that migt affect their dynamic because she was used to the fight and make up route and it was her way of expressing how upset she was. she alsohas the double standard when itcomes to treating civilian adrien super nice compared to chat noir. but thats kindof a given with crushes. Ladybug did listen to his feelings in glacatiour and doesn’t force him to stop expressing himself entirely like with the yellow rose. but honestly its easier to argue adrien has a secert mini attraction to her civilian self than it is to picture ladybug having a crush on chat. but we have seen her jealous over herself when it comes to chat. and ladybug was more likly to believe adrien betrayed her idntity in a timeline than the idea that adrien and chat could be the same person.
I love maribug and I know how much she cares. but even if her nerves and fears are relatable...its hard to give my all in supporting her when she isn’t honest with him about her feelings.
Adrien has a bunch of loved ones who are all really weird at communicating. They all love him but they are ALL realy bad at showing it to him and aren’t always good at loving him even if they do love him. like his dad(yes even his participation trophy of a dad), nathalie, gorilla, chloe and plagg aren’t very strait forward in their affections. pretty emotionally stunted and arent the best at emotion talks. Kagami is still learning to be more expressive and vulnerable even though she is strait forward. but as much as I love mari and knows she cares....her loving him doesn’t exactly do adrien any good if he never knows she cares. as much as I ship adriennette adrien deserves someone to tell him they love him and mari isn’t doing a good job of getting that across. and due to how deeply mari feels I can’t help but imagine she would not be able to take a rejection very well and stay adrien’s friend like how chat is with ladybug.
and now lets dicuss the lukanette and kagadrien ships.
Luka is a sweetheart. he is mature and stable. he can understand mari’s feelings very easily and he never pressures her. she can easily talk to him. He is very supportive and mari is comfortable being vulnerable around him and talking about feelings. Luka also picks up mari’s social ques unlike adrien who struggles with mari at times. they are both creative people. He gives her a place to relax without judgment and support no matter what she chooses. and He made it clear that he likes her romantically and clearly let her know he likes her. That takes away more anxiety. He also knows about her feelings for adrien. He has good hero qualities(was even chat/adrien approved). and he lets mari go at her own pace which is refreshing when you think about her friends and even herself who tend to get impatient for romance and shov extreme shipping moments down our throats. luka makes mari feel wanted and he DID turn her compass. somthing chat hasn’t even done. though mari had decided to stay focused on adrien for a while still. She doesn’t put herself own or think luka is out of her league unlike what she does with adrien. and luka is available to hang out whenever unlike adrie who has to bale due to his dad alot
downsides is luka might be too chill. mari often needs boosts that prompt her to certain aths and lukas chillness might make her not commit as much since it seems fine. Luka is selfless an its great for mari to figure her own feelings. but it does let mari someone be insensative or hurt luka due to not thinking of his feelings. and it gives the impression that luka could easily let her go. that he wouldnt fight for her or specifically for HIS feelings for her. he is also a year older and mature which could have issues because she ISN’T mature at times. luka soothes but chat is good at cheering her up or distracting her from her issues and chat actually points out when he disagrees with something. we don’t see luka standing up for his own feelings or admitting mari might have hurt him at times. like in desperada with her reaction toward kagami and adrien. or her choosing adrien to play guitar rather than the obvious luka. anf if luka has issues he doesn’t strait up tell mari unlike what chat or drien does. so mari might miss extra stuff when it comes to luka as a friend or romantically because luka seems good at communication.
Kagami has good things and bad things with adrien.
Kagami is straitforward about her feelings so thats good because expecting adrien to guess feelings and respond isnt exactly fair. both of them enjoy fencing and competeing against one another. they both enjoy the adrenaline rush in fencing or in akuma battles. both understand the other aren’t the best at social Qs. They both can hand out during parent schedualed activities unlike adrien’s other friends. kagami and adrien make jokes together. sneak out together. and cal talk about their over baring parents and understand eachother in that regard. Both admire ladybug and both admire marinette. both know the importance of validating your own feelings and can be honest with eachother. Adrien can teach kagami that winning isnt everything and the more softer emotions and jokes like how adrien got her her fencing sabre after she lost and was upset andfelt like a failure. and adrien can introduce kagami to even more friends. and kagami knows about his other crush. and kagami can teach adrien to be firmer with boundaries.
down sides is kagami might be straightforward but she also does hide some of her vulnerable and soft emotions from adrien and how invested she really is. they both move pretty quickly when it comes to love. and kagami isn’t the most sensitive I guess at times. and Kagami might treat him like a regular friend but they ARE both a little pressured by their parents to make this work. and kagami is still working through her own perfectionist tendencies and her seeing things as matches. winning, losing and points. adrien also can be prone to pressure at times. so kagami might accidentally pressure him with her aggressive stances at times. and we know adrien still has some feelings for ladybug so that could trouble thingsif that persists. kagami seems like a open book that adrien might forget to look deeper o find moe of her issues. and kagami isnt exactly a expert on softness or feelings. and they might be feeing the way they do out of expectation from the parents. or just wanting more time together and mistaking that for love when they don;t have much experience.
plus of course the secert identity issues. and they might forget to let moments breath.
both adrien and kagami are similar.
and mari and luka are similar.
only adrien has a selfless streak in him and mari doesn’t always want to be selfless and wants to be selfish about feelings.

ml s3 rant; spoilers! be warned
OH MY GOD
the Lukanette and Kagadrien ship has finally sailed
THEY FUCKING WENT THERE
but do you guys know what this mEANS?!
PLATONIC LOVE SQUARE!!!
I still believe that this chaotic duo is the endgame, BUT THINK
Tumblr media
giving them the chance to explore relationships outside one another will make them healthier individuals! For one, Ladybug would not be burdened anymore with her conflicting emotions in dealing with Chat's adoration/love for her. She loves and cares for him too but they have to be professional in their jobs. She'd be more comfortable knowing that Chat is not going to drop an advance on her during battles, and if he does, knows that it doesn't carry the heavy weight of what it means.
For Chat Noir, he wouldn't need to look at Ladybug's affections as a validation for his own and strive to get her attention anymore. Flirty puns and jokes are still out there, but more friendlier and a banter between them. He can become more focused on how he could even be better than he is right now so he can become a more reliable partner to Ladybug. Plus, Adrien - ergo CHAT NOIR - is SMART. Just imagine them plotting together during battles and having their thoughts run a million miles per hour but still managing to sync their thoughts on how to bring the akuma down.
In short, Hawkmoth better be prepared because when these two make a comeback, they're gonna give him the bigGEST ASS WHOOPING
Tumblr media
and a run down for his akuma.
For Marinette, this means that she can get a move on from the Adrien Agreste in her mind and start to really see Adrien Agreste for who he is. I don't mean anything bad about this, but I think we all know that because of her hard crush on Adrien she tends to fantasize about everything involved with him. While funny, it's not exactly healthy if they were to be together in a romantic sense. Plus! Marinette will be more confident and comfortable about her self with Adrien, now that she doesn't need to prioritize making herself look cool and amazing in front of him.
For Adrien, this will finally OPEN THE DOOR TO HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH MARINETTE. This kid is always hovering on the door with his friendship with Marinette (because of the whole gum thing probs and because this is honestly a traumatic experience for meeting someone who then became your friend). He respects Marinette so much, he has to be careful with what he does so the gum incident won't happen again. With Marinette going comfortable with him, he'll finally be able to ease up a lot and erase any lingering doubts or fears that he has over Marinette.
S.S ADRINETTE FINALLY SAILING THE WATERS!!!
Tumblr media
HEALTHY PARTNER RELATIONSHIPS!!!
Marinette and Adrien have Luka and Kagami who are, I believe, someone they need at the moment. Luka is older than Marinette so he is more level headed, calm and rational over most situations (hence why he da perfect snake miraculous owner hihi). He will be the rock Marinette needs as she takes on more responsibilities as a superhero and as she deals with her everyday life. (DID YOU SEE THAT HUG PLS WE WAS ROBBED) Marinette is a great leader and can be amazing when she keeps a clear head, but tends to overthink and worry that makes her second guess herself. Luka's calm nature will balance out Marinette's hyper energy and be there to keep her grounded.
Kagami, as she said in Heart Hunter, is most similar to Adrien. She can understand him a little better than anyone in his friend group, simply because of the similar experiences they have. Adrien doesn't need to over-explain and he doesn't need to feel sorry about talking his own situations because he knows that Kagami can understand where he is coming from. And this is honestly, something that Adrien needs to develop as a character. Because of his sheltered up-bringing, he is shy and naive to most social interactions. Being in a relationship means giving your all in it. Kagami was ready to take the chances and risks but Adrien hesitates and panics. Kagami's strong presence will push Adrien out of his comfort zone and provide him a safe space to understand his own emotions and be less afraid of taking risks as Adrien, just as he is not afraid of taking risks as Chat Noir. Adrien needs to learn how to balance his new emotions and discoveries as Chat Noir and slowly incorporate them into his life as Adrien so he can become a better whole of himself.
In short, Lukanette and Kagadrien rules and y'all haters can just keep quiet and appreciate how this can contribute to our characters.
