So uhhhhh, sad news- So the concepts I had for Lyra's fiances where actually scrapped a LONG time ago, and sadly I had it changed, so now she has no partners- BUT- I will still give you some headcanons, and MAYBE, I will give Lyra a fiance/ex gf in the future if I can think of something for her-

Lyra Rogers Headcanons

TW: Abuse

She is an ace transfem lesbian, and goes by she/her.

She died on her 20th birthday, and the crash was caused when Toby and her were trying to go out somewhere for her birthday while it was raining. Her and Toby were both crying and started yelling at each other because both of them were having a horrendous night because of Frank. As they were taking their anger out verbally at each other, Lyra got distracted, so she accidentally drove them into the ditch. Toby regrets their last conversation being an argument to this day.

Her and Toby were super close, but still had their bad fights due to growing up in an unstable environment.

Her and Toby were planning on running away together when Lyra was 17 and Toby was 14, since Lyra finally got her driving license, and Toby and her had a lot of money saved. Frank caught them though and took away Lyra's keys for two years.

Lyra is pretty quiet and gentle, and can be pretty protective and clingy towards people she cares about, especially Toby, kids, and her friends.

Lyra is a very muscly woman and is insanely strong.

She used to be in a boxing club in highschool for half a year until Frank found out and forbid her from going. Toby did know the whole time and would go to all her practices.

Lyra, as a ghost, can summon weapons and objects. While she doesn't kill, she will summon weapons for the sake of defense.

She loves origami and generally "useless" underrated art techniques that she does for the sake of the outcome looking pretty. Toby tried his best to learn stuff from her and one time on her birthday, he gave her some poorly made origami flowers. She treasures them to this day.

Frank always favored her over Toby when she was younger and she despised it.

She once put a kid in the hospital in her junior year of highschool because they tried to jump her and Toby on their way to school.

Lyra usually had work in the mornings and had to wake up earlier than Toby, but always left him a sticky note for him to read when he woke up.

Lyra loves grunge styled clothing.

She has a hard time expressing her emotions, and can't make it clear to others how she is feeling, so when she is stressed all her emotions try to spill out, and her words always come out wrong. It only gets harder as things go on.

She can get very defensive and a bit sensitive over little things and will bite back when people say anything negative towards her, which got her in trouble at school and with Frank a few times.

Absolutely mama's girl, she loved Connie and would tell her everything, and practically considered her mom her best friend, especially since most people at school didn't like being around her.

She had a special lanyard she used to wear all the time and would hang her keys and some keychains on. Toby has this lanyard now, since Lyra wasn't wearing it during the crash.

She used to pick Toby, Nina, Cody, and Jeff up from school every day once they started highschool due to none of them wanting to walk home anymore because of Randy and Claudia.

Lyra used to have night terrors growing up.

Her and Cody are stepsiblings.

She is 3 years older than Toby, and 5 years older than Cody.

My personal AU Clockwork timeline

Tw: mentioned rape and abuse

1996

-Born on November 6th

2002

-Family moves from Windsor to Denver

-Her father starts to beat her

2004

- Clockwork gets the worst beating of her life and in influences her drawings

2005

-Her brother begins sexually abusing her

-bullies attack her for being abused for 4 years

2009

-She pushes her brother away and he stops abusing her

2010

-She begins high school and starts to make friends

2011

-She meets a boy named Chris and begins dating him

2013

-Clockwork's life starts to crumble, she gets broken up with and her friends start to leave

-She reaches her breaking point and sews a pattern of X's into her cheeks, she is sent to therapy for this.

-After therapy, she is sent to a hospital to administer a new treatment to cool her homicidal and suicidal tendencies

-The treatment backfires, turning her eyes from brown to green. Along with that, her homicidal tendencies increased wildly to the point of insanity

-She kills the doctor with no remorse and breaks out of the hospital, she runs to her home.

-She opens the door and startles her mother who she kills gruesomely seconds after

-She kills her father and brother shortly after

-She also dismantles a pocket watch and shoves it into her eye, making the remains of that eye non-usable mush

-High on the adrenaline of the backfired procedure and the murders she commited, she burnt her house to the ground

-She begins living in alleyways and continues to kill people whenever she can

-She goes to Chris's house to kill him and meets Ticci Toby, who takes her to the main cabin

-She meets the others and begins staying in the main cabin

-Toby becomes her mentor for a short while before their relationship becomes romantic and he drops the authoritative power imbalance

-Clockwork becomes friends with Nina Hopkins/Nina the killer

-Clockwork and Jeff the killer form a sibling like bond

2020

-Clockwork begins questioning her sexuality and tests it out with Nina (With consent from Toby, of course.)

-She decides she's bisexual

-For a short while, she, Toby and Nina begin a polyamorous relationship until Nina confesses to being a lesbian

2021

-Toby and Clockwork go on a dangerous mission which results in what she believed would cause Toby's death

-Toby gets stabbed by Zalgo's proxy while Slenderman's magic is fading

-She reluctantly returns to the main cabin and spends 2 weeks in Toby's room, not speaking to anyone, eating or sleeping.

-Toby eventually returns and they vow to never let something like that happen again

2023

-Clockwork and Toby start to build a cabin in the forest together and move into it by Spring

-Soon after, they get 'married'

2026

-At 30, the couple have their first child; Erin Rogers.

-Erin is a male who was born with heterochromia

2029

-Toby and Clockwork have their second child, Lyra "Ly" Rogers, named after Toby's sister

2031

-The "Forest Breakdown" begins as Slenderman's magic fades and they barrier around the forest fades along with it.

-Cops instantly come into the forest once they're able to pinpoint the locations of all these serial killers

-Clockwork is arrested and separated from her family and friends

-During interrogation, she realizes nobody knows she killed her family and only think she killed that doctor

-She tells the detective about the treatment and her unwell state of mind causing her to panic and kill the doctor which is a lie but they detective doesn't see through it.

-After trial, she is taken to a mental hospital after clearly showing signs of needing help.

-Her children are not given permission to see her or Toby.

2037

-at 41, Clockwork is deemed sane and allowed to leave the mental ward.

-She reunites with Toby and plans on reuniting with her children.

-an 11 year old Erin is less than enthusiastic to be seeing the parents he deemed "awful people" still alive and actively denies their efforts to reconnect with him.

-Meanwhile, 9 year old Lyra was ecstatic to be reunited with her actual parents and encouraged their efforts to be in her life.

-Shortly after, they found they'd need a lawyer to get custody of their children or at least, Lyra. They'd decided to respect Erin's wishes to keep their distance from him.

-They began working up the funds for a lawyer by working minium wage jobs (it's all they could muster) with people like Nina, Jeff, Tim and Brian, the only few who made it out of the "Forest Breakdown"

2042

-After 5 years of trying to gain custody, they eventually decided just to be happy with seeing Lyra and maybe Erin, as much as possible seeing as how they couldn't exactly provide a great environment for their kids to live in.

-They focused their money on paying rent or going out for food with their kids to spend time with them or going places by themselves or with their kids.

2046

-By 50, Toby and Clockwork got legally married and counted it as they had been married since 2023. They only did the paperwork and didn't actually have a wedding.

2049

-Clockwork and Toby were introduced to their first grandchild, Evelyn Rogers, as Ly had become a single mother.

2051

-Sometime in 2051, Toby was killed by a police officer who mistook him helping someone as trying to kill them and shot him to death.

-After this, she retreated to the forest and began living in their old cabin together and fixed it up.

-Ly and Evelyn stayed with her frequently and they planned a nice burial for him.

2058

-Her life was as peaceful as it could've been for the last 7 years of her life

-She eventually decided to turn herself in for every murder she ever commited and when Erin got word of this, he had one final talk with her about their lives.

-She found peace with her son and the rest of her family and was put to lethal injection for her crimes.

-After her death, she was buried next to Toby despite some distant family of Clockwork's trying to put her burial in Windsor with her family which Ly and Erin both dealt with swiftly.

There are a lot of new additions to the cast this time around and to save on confusion I’ve created this page of info for all the children and grandchildren of the Sexvengers.

Please be aware, while I did name some of these characters after canon ones that have only just started appearing in the MCU now (Tommy and Billy will stand out) they are not those characters. In some cases, I’ve given little nods to them but when naming children characters I like to look at children who already exist of the characters I’m writing because I figure that the characters must like those names for a reason.

Riley Maria Skjodbærer

Age: 35

The firstborn daughter of the ‘Sexvengers’. Biological daughter of Elise Cooper and Thor Odinson. Riley is heir to the Asgardian throne and twin sister of Pietro. She can control the wind currents and is able to use them to fly.

Pietro Charles Skjodbærer

Age: 35

Height: 6’4”

Hair Color: Blonde

Eye Color: Blue

The firstborn son of the ‘Sexvengers’. Biological daughter of Elise Cooper and Clint Barton. Pietro was born before the bonding ceremony that gave his parents their powers and extended life, so the only baseline human in the family. He has no powers but has eaten one of Idunn’s apples to extend his life expectancy.

Rebecca Torunn Skjodbærer

Rebecca is the biological daughter of Natasha Romanoff and Bucky Barnes. She has always been interested in the superhero thing, and one of the only kids who followed her parents into it, becoming a key player in SHIELD. She has the power of flight.

The 3-year-old son of Sarah is being raised without a father. He has lived his whole life with his grandparents who have all taken an active role in raising him.

The nine-year-old twins of Rose and Paul. Up until the move to Asgard they have been having a fairly typical upbringing.

So again, this isn’t the blog for this, and I should really just make a personal where I complain about everything, but I’m going to do it here anyway. If you don’t want to read this, don’t look under the cut.

I haven’t been private about just how much I feel like His Dark Materials fails anyone who has done more than read the books once when they were a kid. I have a very long standing love affair with the original His Dark Materials trilogy, because I grew up in an extremely restrictive religious household and didn’t get to experience them as a child. I have read the entire series through every December for several years now, and each time I read it I love it a little more. I feel like The Golden Compass/The Northern Lights especially is one of the greatest children’s stories I’ve ever read. It’s simple, it’s clean, it’s filled with dynamic and interesting characters, and everything in it serves a purpose.

And I have a lot to say on the way the show treated Lyra as a character and how they made her little more than a prop in her own story, and how that makes the story really boring to sit through, but I’m going to put that on the back burner for now. Because I don’t feel like anyone is noticing the kind of casual sexism that this show is really guilty of, and I think we should be.

This is a pretty negative look at the show so i don’t want anyone bitching at me saying why watch it if you don’t like it. Take that logic and apply it here. If you don’t want to listen to genuine critique, don’t read this.

I’ve said before that Mrs. Coulter is probably one of my first “bad older woman I shouldn’t love but do” characters. My first read through of the books was when I was in my early twenties and kind of coming out to myself. I had spent years denying the fact I was a lesbian all the while secretly hating myself for being unable to force myself to like men. Mrs. Coulter came about in my life at a time when I was learning to let go of my self hatred and accept who I am. Yes, Pullman intentionally put her in there to be someone the reader is infatuated with. He wanted her to be beautiful and intoxicating and dangerous, and she was, but it hit me on an even deeper level than that. Because I identified with her. Not because I spent my time casually abusing children, but because I always felt like she was a victim of the system she was born into. A system that devalued her as a woman. A system where her ambition was demonized and looked down on. One that led to a loveless marriage, a heated affair with a bad man, a shameful fall out, and the loss of her child. Her violence, her cruelty and calculation, isn’t just a character trait, it’s a symptom of the Magesterium’s oppression.

I feel like the show attempted to highlight this, and I honestly go back and forth on whether or not it’s a good thing. We get scenes like the one where she’s talking about heights with Lyra, and the haunted way she looks into the distance and says she’s always wanted to jump. We see how she can separate from her daemon and how often when one of them is vulnerable, the other purposefully pulls away from them (something that did not happen at all in the books). She’s portrayed as a traumatized, mentally ill woman. And it’s both beautiful and---kind of cringy seeing my personal view of her be so plainly portrayed on the screen.

You see the problem I have with this is that no matter how deeply I sympathize with Mrs. Coulter as someone who struggles with a mental illness myself, she abuses children. She is the quintessential abused becomes the abuser trope, and if this is true, I have to ask myself how much can we really hate her? Is it ok, especially in our current social climate, to portray a mentally ill woman as a villain? To what degree is it ok to blame a victim of trauma for traumatizing others? There’s no easy answer to that question and I think that’s why Pullman left the reader to decide for themselves how much of a victim vs villain Mrs Coulter was.

I don’t mind asking and engaging with these questions, especially since I feel like the show was geared toward and older audience destined to ask them anyway. However I want to take a hard turn now and look at Lord Asriel. Because the problem I have is not, in essence, with how the show portrays either character on their own, but in how it portrays Asriel in contrast to Marisa.

I always kind of felt like Asriel was a character that Pullman didn’t really give a shit about. Maybe he did and I just missed it, but just in the way he talks about other characters verses Asriel---Idk.

Asriel is Marisa Coulter’s opposite. In the context of the first book, they’re both villains but at opposite ends of the spectrum. He’s a straight, white, noble, manly-man who is also a genius. It’s not a hard leap to assume that he wouldn’t have gotten half as far in life without the social privileges he got from all of those things. Asriel was never really someone I could sympathize with because he was always an example of just how differently the system treats straight white men, even when they disagree with them. Despite being a blatant heretic, a convicted killer, and a disgraced nobleman, he’s still seen as powerful and someone to be respected. Colleges fund his research, he still has a personal servant, and even as a literal prisoner, he’s allowed to do whatever he wants. Unlike Marisa, he hasn’t had to carve out a position for himself in the world. It’s already there.

He is the epitome of privilege---and in the books he acts like it. Asriel is cold, selfish, intimidating, and abusive. The only sympathetic moment he has in the first book is when he shows open terror upon seeing Lyra coming to his workshop in the north. He’s scared only because he doesn’t want to kill his daughter, and personally I think he was only so terrified because he knew that if she stayed he would do it. Once he finds out Roger is with Lyra, he immediately goes back to not giving a shit about her.

Book Asriel is never sorry for how he treats his daughter and at the end of The Golden Compass/Northern Lights he not only blatantly doesn’t care about what will happen to Lyra if he leaves her behind, he tells Marisa that she shouldn’t care either. He tells her that Lyra hates her and that she’s squandered the two chances she had to be with their child. Right up to the very last pages of the novel he just---doesn’t care.

Asriel in the show is, to put it simply, is toned down. He isn’t so much of a blatant asshole. When Lyra talks, he doesn’t immediately dismiss her or dominate the entire conversation. It’s very subtle in the way they change him. His threats don’t hold a lot of weight, his body language doesn’t ooze with intimidation and power, and when he talks to Lyra he shows clear emotion. He softens and listens to her, even if he doesn’t change his position. This comes off as portraying him as a man who is more compassionate than he really is, and who is, perhaps, even regretful that he must kill Roger. They completely cut the scene where there is a violent fight between Pan, Salcilia, and Stelmaria that results in Lyra falling down a snow drift and Asriel just----not responding. He turns around and walks into the light without mentioning that she, for all he knows, just fell to her death. He’s not sad or concerned. And while I’m sure they likely omitted this scene for budgetary reasons, it has a big impact on his character. He didn’t leave Lyra to her death; he instructed his man servant to care for her and help her escape.

So what am I really trying to say in all this? What’s the point? Is it so bad that we’re giving characters more depth than a children’s novel allowed them to have? Well... yeah. Because of the way they chose to do it.

They chose to make Marisa more damaged, but they also made her much more violent. They turned up the things that made her bad and scary while toning down Asriel’s worse qualities so much that he kind of feels like a victim, which is a gross when his character is meant to be the epitome of cis white straight privilege.

01. Both Lyra and Viola have poignant moments of remembering and crying over each other. When Lyra visits the Costas on their barge, she imagines how Ma Costa would cook Viola eggs and onion soup for Viola to enjoy. When Lyra goes back to Svalbard to see Iorek, she thinks about how Iorek would rough up Viola’s hair and how both of them would roll around in the snow and ride on Iorek’s back together. Viola has very similar moments when she watches movies or reads books that remind her of Lyra.

02. Sometimes, Lyra even dreams of Viola stroking her scalp and braiding her hair, while Viola frequently imagines that she can hear Lyra laughing at some of her jokes and she almost always falls asleep imagining that Lyra is singing to her.

03. Whenever Viola feels like she’s breaking down (whether due to school or work or her mother’s mental illness or her own dysphoria), Kirjava cuddles up next to her and purrs in order to remind Viola that she is still good and beautiful and a woman.

04. Both Lyra and Viola cobbled their names together from various different sources. Lyra was christened Roland Gabriel Coulter when she was born and later Doctor Carne renamed her Roland Gabriel Polstead when she came to Jordan College. Lyra hated the name “Roland Gabriel Polstead” from very early on and knew herself to be a girl from the age of four or five. So she took the name “Lyra” from when she saw a lyre performance at a harvest festival when she was five, “Isabella” (her middle name) from a spooky story about Queen Isabeau of Brytain (whose daemon was a wolf in this universe) she heard on All Hallows’ Eve at the age of eight, and “Belacqua” from her admiration for Lord Asriel. Meanwhile, Viola knew she was a girl from the age of six. She took the name “Viola” from the main character of Shakespeare’s play “Twelfth Night”. Meanwhile, her middle name, “Elaine”, came about because Viola observed that many boys had their fathers’ names for middle names and decided to take her mother’s name as her own middle name.

05. Lyra’s wife Eleanor Baudelaire and Viola’s wife Madeleine Whitman are also trans. Lyra married Eleanor because Nell reminded her a lot of Viola and Viola took Madeleine as her wife because Maddie shares Lyra’s mischievous grin.

06. Neither Lyra nor Viola have any biological children, but they adopt children instead (Lyra has two daughters named Sophia and Miranda while Viola has five children named Samuel, Roger, Laura, Michael, and Sarah). Both Lyra and Viola raise their children to be good and kind and patient and just, and both of them are also fiercely protective of their kids, especially against bullies.

07. Viola always felt a bit more ‘Male’ when she held the Subtle Knife, so her choice to break it represents her accepting her womanhood and a kind of triumph over her dysphoria.

08. Pantalaimon is still male because Lyra is pansexual (i.e. attracted to men, non-binary people, genderfluid people, agender people, etc) and Kirjava is still female because Viola is 100% a lesbian.

09. Viola’s favourite part of Lyra is her voice (particularly when she’s singing or laughing) and Lyra’s favourite aspect of Viola is stroking her scalp and braiding her hair.

10. Before he dissolves into atoms, John Parry goes back to his home and hugs both Elaine and Viola. His last words are “Viola, the best thing I ever did in my life…was having you for a daughter”.

11. Viola shows Lyra a large collection of her favourite movies when they’re first getting to know each other (including “Casablanca”, “West Side Story”, “Dirty Dancing”, “Titanic”, and “Lilo and Stitch”).

12. When Lyra is first telling Viola what a daemon is, the usually quiet and reserved and sad Viola makes a joke about fursonas.

13. A major cause of Viola’s dysphoria is that she doesn’t look like what Society says a trans woman is “supposed to look like” (i.e. she’s poor, she’s black, she’s butch instead of super-feminine, she doesn’t pass for a Cis girl very well as a child...). She also deliberately suppressed her gender identity for years in order to avoid making things harder for her mother.

14. Lyra undergoes gender transition with the help of the Witches and Viola transitions with the help of her world’s medical science. They complete their transition in late 2010 and when they feel each other’s presence in the Botanic Gardens, both Lyra and Viola gasp in shock at the sight of each other fully transitioned.

15. Whenever Viola’s dysphoria gets too intense for her to handle, Lyra sings to her and strokes her hair as a way of comforting her. Lyra’s covers of pop and rock songs aren’t the most amazing things ever, but Viola always smiles because it's the first time another girl her own age has given her positive attention and affection.
