Hello~ how are you doing? I really like your meta posts about star wars they all cause me emotional damage but also thoughtful.
First I want to say that I'm relatively new to SW fandom and universe. I watched the trilogy a long time ago, but just now that I decided to know more. I watched the movies and series (currently watching tcw animation), besides of what is Disney canon I only have some informations of what happens in the Legends.
Anyway, I said this all because I have this doubt in my mind since I watched the prequels, and this only got stronger when I re-watch the saga. Was Anakin destiny to fall?
And this lead to another doubt, because I don't really know what is determined by the Force or is free choice.
I'm not Anakin apologist. I just fail to recognize a path where he fulfilled the prophecy without falling in the dark side. Tbh, I feel like he always was one step to the dark side, always in the limit... I don't think I'm reading correctly, because in the end, he chose it. Just like Reva chose to not kill Luke.
Anakin chose to follow the dark side over and over. And yet, I still wonder if he really had a choice? Am I being coherent here? Probably not :')
You're definitely being coherent haha! And thank you for this question--I was literally just talking to my friend about this the other day, so I'm glad to have a chance to flesh out my thoughts :)
The whole point of Anakin is that he loves so deeply it's unhealthy and it burns him up from the inside out. He ties himself so deeply to those he loves that he struggles to handle things involving their relationships with him in a reasonable way. These issues stem from his childhood, and they're never adequately addressed; it's likely he never even consciously recognized how dangerously deep his attachments to others ran. This makes him vulnerable to manipulation, which is exactly what Palpatine takes advantage of.
Anakin did make a very distinct choice: he is accountable for his actions and in the end he did know what he was doing. But I don't think that, at least at first, he realized what the root cause of his actions truly was. When he first turns to the Dark Side he's not consciously doing it for selfish reasons--deep down, it is a selfish desire for control and ultimately for power, but in his mind he's doing it because he has to: he is trying to save Padmé's life and overthrow what he views as a corrupt regime.
This persepctive is a direct result of Palpatine's influence. Palpatine groomed Anakin from the time he was a vulnerable and traumatized child through his adulthood. He leveraged his access to Anakin to put himself in a fatherly role in Anakin's life-- someone who he trusts and who seems to be the only one who fully trusts him and his judgement is naturally going to be more appealing to an immature and desperate young man than the often-restrictive Jedi order and the expectations he can never seem to live up to.
Palpatine very intentionally plays into Anakin's heightened impression of his own responsibility and power (caused by his awareness of his status as the Chosen One), and Anakin's simultaneous sense of utter powerlessness and loss (caused by his childhood as a slave, the suddenness of his departure from Tatooine, and the death of his mother) by making it out to be that Anakin, and only Anakin, has the ability and the right to determine how things should be. Not only that, he removes the only support system Anakin has by sending Obi-Wan to Geonosis and framing Padmé as a victim--as Anakin's victim--if Anakin doesn't use his power to save her.
To his credit, Anakin initially resists. He's opposed to Palpatine at first, so Palpatine pulls on Anakin's attachment to him as a father-figure (despite what Anakin had just witnessed) to goad him into killing Mace Windu.
As the lightning arcs across the room, connecting the two men in front of him in a violent and burning display, Anakin watches, his own battle raging inside him. He knows what is right, and in truth he knows he is powerful enough to stop Palpatine. He is the Chosen One. He is fated to bring balance to the Force. He could choose that fate: he could save Mace and stop Palpatine. But Anakin allows what Palpatine offers, and what Anakin himself feels, to blind him to the truth he had just recognized. Choosing the right is choosing to sacrifice what he wants, what he loves, and he will never do that. That scene is a representation of Anakin's internal decision as much as his physical one: in the moment he kills Mace Windu, he chooses to attack the good in himself instead of the evil, and commits himself to the Dark Side.
The tragedy of Anakin's fall is that it could have been prevented, in some other life. If he was protected from Palpatine's influence; if he had been able to see his mother before her death; if he had been shown how his attachment was unhealthy and why, and taught how to love people without making them his entire universe; if he had talked about these things and listened to the counsel he received; then it would have been different. But it would have been different because he would have been different. He was shaped by what happened to him and those around him, and changing those things would have made him into someone who would never have chosen to fall. Who would never have felt like he needed to. Who, perhaps, would never have wanted to. But as it was, he had a furnace in him, and others saw that and stoked the flame, and Anakin chose to let it consume him.
So in the end, it's a both-and situation: what happened to Anakin was both fully Anakin's choice and never only his choice. The circumstances and plans of other people intersected perfectly with the kind of person Anakin was naturally, which was shaped by his childhood experiences, which was shaped in part by the Jedi and in part by simple chance, and Anakin's own determination of the person he wanted to become. Ultimately the final decision was made by him--he recognizes himself that he killed Anakin Skywalker--but it's impossible to assign sole blame to any one party for all the decisions and factors that led him there. That's just how life works: nothing happens in a vacuum, and it's impossible to tell what the tipping point is, because everything is entangled in ways we can't describe. And in that way, I suppose you could call it fate.
But fate is never stronger than will. The true tragedy is that even after all of this, Anakin was presented a way out, through Obi-wan, and he chose not to take it. Who can truly know why we cling to what destroys us? But he did, as so many of us do. He chose a path of suffering and cruelty and death, and he walked that path for many years.
But in the end, he chose to turn around--and so can we. No one is ever truly beyond the point of saving. We always have a choice. And that is what I think is most important of all: no matter why we fall, we can always rise again.

here is a fun little star wars scenario that has been pinging around inside my head like a screensaver:
so let’s say there’s some very zealous, very low-ranking fresh young Imperial officer on duty the day they take the Senator from Alderaan into custody.
and he is very very nervous because a) he’s been here for like a week and b) none of that week required him to be in a room with Darth Vader. which he now is. so he is trying to focus very very hard on Doing Everything Exactly According To Protocol, as a means of not focusing on the seven-foot evil wizard standing fifteen feet away.
and part of the protocol for processing new prisoners is to make a new file for them in the prisoner database, and enter all their biographical details and vital statistics and a gene sample and their known associates and the nature of their terrible crimes against the Empire and so on. which he does! very meticulously!
except the computer keeps throwing an error message. the stupid thing keeps beeping at him, this awful grating little noise that makes his shoulders ratchet up tighter and tighter every time it honks at him, and he can’t fix it and Darth Vader is right over there—
except oh god oh fuck the beeping noise must be annoying Darth Vader, too, because he’s coming over here and our poor junior officer is convinced he’s going to die before he even lives long enough to send his first paycheck home to his poor widowed mother —
he stammers out an apology. Vader just stares at him. he swears he’ll figure out the problem right away, sir, it’s probably a bug in the system, it’s just that for some silly reason it keeps saying this gene sample doesn’t match the one on file for the Senator so he can’t get her logged as a new prisoner just yet —
“Dismissed,” says Vader. the poor kid flees, gratefully.
Vader considers the matter. in fact, his underling was correct: the gene sample, which he saw taken through his very own helmet lenses, does not match the official record of Senator Leia Organa, heir to the throne of Alderaan. so: perhaps the sample on record was falsified. not impossible, but very, very difficult. and ordinarily a crime attempted by the lowly and desperate. he cannot see any need for it, in the daughter of a queen.
another possibility presents itself. Alderaan has no history of using royal doubles, as some worlds do. but Bail Organa has worked closely with royal houses where the practice is long-established. perhaps he was inspired. perhaps the girl they captured is not Leia Organa at all.
Vader runs the gene sample against the ship’s database. it is woefully incomplete, of course, containing only a fraction of the Empire’s billions of citizens: the ship’s own complement, a selection of known criminals and Rebels they might encounter, high-ranking officials whose identity must be confirmed should the Emperor require their presence. unlikely that this girl, whoever she is, would have a record here, or even a partial match—
the computer beeps at him. it’s a cheerful beep, this time, not the error message that stymied the junior officer. the computer reports that the gene sample is a partial match for Pooja Naberrie, the Senator from Naboo. they are, with eighty-nine percent probability, first cousins.
and Vader just. kind of stands there. for a minute.
when he goes to Leia’s cell, there’s no interrogation droid with him. he goes in. he shuts the door behind him. he stands there, silent, for frankly a worryingly long time, until Leia has run through her entire stockpile of  “how dare you, I’m a member of the Senate on a humanitarian mission” and “whatever you want, you can’t possibly think I would be of any help” and “well, if you’re going to interrogate me, get on with it already” and “are you even listening to me?” and  falls silent herself.
Vader has been listening to her. he has also been listening to the Force, which seems to think that she’s not lying. obviously the humanitarian mission part is bullshit, that goes without saying. but the “I’m Senator Leia Organa” parts and the “I won’t help you” parts? yeah. he searched his feelings. he knows them to be true. the Force is singing in his head, bright and clear, in a way it hasn’t for nearly twenty years.
there’s still Tarkin to deal with, though. Vader turns and leaves the cell without a word.
Tarkin wants to blow up Alderaan. this is unacceptable, obviously, and Vader forbids it on the grounds that the Queen and the Viceroy possess vital intelligence, not disclosed to their daughter, that must be acquired. said intelligence being, not that he’s saying this out loud, how the fuck Bail got his hands on his daughter, and who else knows about it.
“the fate of the galaxy rests on it,” is what he does say out loud. from the way the Force harmonizes with his words, that might even be true.
so the Death Star just. parks there. in an incredibly threatening orbit around the planet. they issue a demand that the Organas surrender themselves, or else, but apparently the happy couple just left for a low-tech weekend retreat in the mountains, what awful timing, they’re sending someone to fetch them right away. Vader shuts himself up in his quarters, to seethe and watch the surveillance feed from Leia’s cell. he’s not really paying attention to much else.
and it’s not like a random freighter getting tractored in for being an incredibly obvious smuggling vessel is the kind of thing you’d alert Darth Vader over, anyway.
so he’s still sitting there, one great big thought filling up his whole entire head, watching Leia take a frustration nap, when her cell door opens.
and a trooper comes in.
and the trooper takes off his helmet.
and he says, “I’m Luke Skywalker. I’m here to rescue you.”

Palpatine had heard of your family's alliance with the rebels before Vader ever met you. At the Emperor’s request, the Death Star approached Karlinus, and Vader came to your planet. You had been working at your family’s tea shop when the dark lord entered. Immediately, there was a chill in the air. As a poor family, you did not know much about the Jedi or the Senate, and you had no options to do so after the empire took hold. So your life had to continue, working with your family at a tea shop.
At the moment you recognized that it was Darth Vader who had come into your family’s tea shop, he was already looking down at you, carefully taking in your features. Though you weren’t identical, the way you moved, the way you carried yourself, the way you treated others. It all reminded him of Padmè. With a light twist of his hand, he sent customers and your family to the wall, the tables, and tea cups shattering against the wall, and you stood in fear, shaking from the presence of the Imperial enforcer.
You watched, frozen, but unsure if it was fear or the force keeping you still as Vader took deliberate steps from the doorway to stand before you, barely a step away. Carefully, he lifted his hand to your cheek, touching where a stray piece of porcelain had cut your cheek and you flinched instinctively. He smeared the blood across your cheek as he looked down at you through the gaze of his red lenses, watching as you sucked in a breath, relishing as he used the force to hear how your body reacted. Vader smiled as he heard your breathing pick up and your heart race before he pulled back slightly, taking off his helmet to show his face.
You took in the details of his face, but when you tried to look into his yellow eyes, the feeling was so unnerving you had to look away. As you looked at him, you realized how attractive Vader truly was. His messy, curly-wavy shoulder-length brown hair, tanned skin, and the long scar across his right eye. He had a broad athletic build and was muscular, and in his suit, you barely reached his shoulders. He had a well-defined jawline, high cheekbones, and a straight nose. For a moment, you felt like you were looking at an actor from a holodrama, not a Sith Lord.
“Name," Vader said coldly, and you looked away from fear that you would be punished for staring. But you couldn't avoid his gaze as he suddenly grabbed you by your jaw, his fingers digging into your cheeks, and his gaze intensely focused on you.
“Y/N…" You said breathlessly, trying not to say anything from his harsh grip on you. He stared a moment longer before he nodded. His hand moved to move away stray strands of hair from your face. Vader’s glare was hot and made you want to squirm, but in his mind, he was imagining a new life for you.
“Salomé," Vader said flatly as he grabbed your arm. “That is what you will be called now. You are Salomé Amidala.” He said before he shoved you towards the clones that accompanied him.

After you were taken, your parents turned their backs on the rebels, aligning themselves with the Empire in the hopes that they would see you again. But, Vader never allowed them, he never let his new bride out of his sight. It was a message to the rebels, that hope stood no place in this galaxy.
Darth Vader sits on his throne in his Imperial Fortress on Mustafar. The room is lit carefully to intimidate his visitors and advisors. Without looking, you know what he looks like. After nearly 6 months of marriage, you knew him as well as you knew yourself, though he hadn’t put in the same effort for you. You know the way the slight breeze from the fan hits his face and makes him blink more, how his hair is pushed back by this breeze, showing off scars on his cheeks and over his right eye, and you know he has never smiled, not even the day he married you.
You stay still, weighed down by the traditional Nabooian clothes, headpieces and face paint you are made to wear. The black silk gown had red embroidered motifs with a potolli fur trim. The bottom of the dress wide skirt was decorated with red kyber crystals. You fiddled with a piece of the headpiece that reached your hand. Two frame faces sit on either side of your headpiece as various red jewels fall on silver chains, from the top of your head and down your back.
As Vader deals with meeting after meeting, request after request, he does not acknowledge you as you sit by his side, and you stay silent, not wishing to upset him. As an old advisor drones on and on, only every few moments, he pauses to look at you a bit better.
There were whispers across the galaxy, ones your handmaidens told you as they readied you in the morning. That the people had begun to believe that Padmé Amidala lived, that the sith had found a way to bring life back to the dead. Everyone thought Padmé was back, but she wasn’t. And Vader did not love you like he loved her, he couldn't. He had reminded you enough, you may be his bride but he will always love her and not you.
As you start to pay attention to the meeting again, you listen to Vader rebuking the advisor – what was his name again? Bevinorr? Apprai? It hardly mattered, you never had to speak before and you’re sure that the day you will speak, you will meet Padmé Amidala for yourself– when something catches your attention.
"It seems, Sabitho, that you suffer from a severe lack of awareness," Vader's voice rumbles, his tone laced with a barely contained anger. "This is not Padmé Amidala you address, but my wife, Salomé. Address her correctly. Failure to do so will have consequences."
The advisor stammers, realizing his mistake, and quickly corrects himself. "Apologies, my Lord Vader. I meant no disrespect."
"See that it doesn't happen again," Vader warns, his voice filled with a dark warning. He turns his attention back to the advisor, his presence demanding absolute obedience. As you observe the interaction, feeling a mixture of gratitude and unease towards Vader's protection. It is a constant reminder that you are only a substitute for the woman he truly loves.
Tumblr media
In Vader’s mind, that is all you were supposed to be only a replacement for what he had lost. You were not meant to be more than someone to keep him from being alone. So he didn’t let you get close. You were restricted to your own bed chamber on the opposite side of his own on the Fortress, he didn’t spend more time with you than needed, and he reminded himself of her every day.
Padmé. You would never be Padmé. You could never so completely own Vader’s heart as Padmé owned Anakin. You could not bring out anything else from him, not when he had already scooped out his whole being, gave her all of the good that could come out of him. And the good that Padmé so desperately believed was still inside of him? He scoured it the moment he learned he had killed her.
Anakin and Padmé were both dead, they died together on Mustafar with his dreams of a family, the lightness in him snuffed out because of his rage. He deserved to be alone and suffer, and yet… he couldn’t. Palpatine had forced him to take a bride, to get control of the family of rebel scum that left him with you. It had caused many on your home planet to surrender to the Empire and end their resistance. A victory by any means.
He can’t love. He is sure of it. What he did to his wife, the mother of his children, to Padmé is the proof alone. Then why was it that he felt that twinge in his chest after he would be particularly cruel to his Salomé? The first month, all she did was cry in her chamber and refuse to obey orders. It only served to infuriate him them. So he tried to be gentler to get her obedience. And when he did, she listened.
Some nights, she would still cry and he could sense it in the force. But most nights, she thought of a man, someone other than him. The only time he could sense any happiness, was at the thought of someone who wasn’t him. And thats when he felt the sinking feeling, one he felt when Rush Clovis and Padmé were alone together. So he spoiled Salomé, she was his after all. She should only think of him, he has brought her a life that she would have never lived if not for him. Salomé was his. She only needed to accept it.
Tumblr media
Meeting after meeting comes and goes, and he continues to work. You take the time to think back to Karlinus, and the ones you left behind. One face comes first, before your parents and friends… Gracies Gras. Just thinking of them reminds you of the time you spent together; walking in the woods behind your houses, them gifting you silk dresses that you had eyed during trips to the city, and imagining a future together.
As your mind drifts to Gracies, a tear slips from your eye, streaking the white face paint on you and landing at the corner of your mouth. Your hand traces a small metal bracelet you wear, it held a small hologram of Gracies that you would speak to at night and it was programmed to respond. It was the only comfort you had and you were lucky not to lose it when Vader took you.
“We will rule the galaxy, as husband and wife.” Vader finally speaks, his gloved thumb wiping the tear from your mouth. You turn to face him, startled by his sudden interest in speaking to you and look around, realizing you two are alone in the room.
Darth Vader knows full well that you never wanted this life and he is well aware that you are in love with someone else. He hates this for so many reasons - the forming love he has for you, his jealousy and disdain for the other man, but most importantly because he never wanted to rule the galaxy. That was Palpatine’s goal. He would have been perfectly happy to just keep his new bride and destroy Palpatine if he had the opportunity. The Emperor had tricked him.
You stay silent for a moment, only nodding absently as to not upset him, but then you feel anger start to bubble up inside you. In all this time, you weren’t treated like a person, but rather a doll. Put in elaborate outfits each day and paraded around to show that Vader is not alone.
“You have forced this life upon me. I should working in my family’s tea shop on Karlinus, and marrying someone I love.” You slowly begin to speak, starting quietly, before you start to get more confident as you continue.
“I see, and who is this man you love?” Vader speaks, his tone threatening and he begins to grip the armrests of his chair tightly.
“He is a good man. A man who cares for me and others.” You respond defensively and avoiding his gaze.
“You do not think I care for you?” His voice threatens to break and his eyes narrow. The very thought that you could even think this sets him fuming. Despite his anger though he keeps his voice calm and even. When you don’t answer immediately, you feel your arm being grabbed and turned roughly to look at him. He stares at you intensely, his eyes boring holes into your very being. He looks as if he has no other thought in his mind beyond making his point of what he’s saying. You have no choice, you have to look into his eyes. He is completely unmoving and completely still. The rage inside him however is growing and threatening to break every second. How dare you even think that to be true. How dare you even have the audacity.
“I am the most powerful force user in the galaxy. No one can stand up to me. I am a Lord. A Lord of the Sith. I have brought peace, freedom, justice, and security to my new Empire. Do you not understand the power that I wield? And I care for you and only you.” This is as close to passionate and emotional as Darth Vader will ever get. He is making a point. You will not disrespect him. You. Will. Not.
“Let go of me.” You whisper helplessly, trying to tug your arm away from him. Vader’s words were one thing, but he never showed you love. And even if he did, you couldn’t trust him.
“Then perhaps you should leave, and go back to whoever you love.” Vader lets go of your arm and his expression becomes calm and stoic again, though his words still hold that edge that you’ve come to recognize that means he’s about to snap.
Vader stands up and takes a step towards you, towering over your very being. He leans down and puts his face right up close to yours, his breath warm as he whispers.
“Prove it. Prove that you mean what you say. Leave this place. Leave me. Leave this entire empire. Leave and go to him. If you truly want to leave, and truly love him, go try. You can leave at any time. Leave, but know I will be coming for you, and when I find you I will keep you. I will put you in your place. I will kill him. I will take you. You will be mine. I will not let you go. Is that understood?”
You’re silent, partially from shock and partially from your own anger. As you stare at him, he stares back and as he opens his mouth to repeat himself, you speak.
“I understand.”
Vader doesn’t react. For a moment, you think you’ve finally gotten to him, but he doesn’t even move. It’s as though this never even happened. He stares blankly at you with cold, black eyes, and slowly walks away, his form already fading out of the door before you can even react.
Tumblr media
Over the next few days, you make your plans to leave carefully. You find a handmaiden that looks the most like you and help her learn to speak like you, act like you, and walk like you. After a few more days of practice, you manage to assemble a disguise and kit to stow away with onto a starfighter that you have been learning to fly.
At the same time, Vader already knows of your plans and has steps in place so he can follow you if and when you escape. He slowly walks from his meeting to his meditation chamber. He enters, and without even an ounce of hesitation, he sits down, and he begins to meditate. He allows himself to clear his mind, until all that is left is his connection with the Force.
Let me hear her voice. Let me hear her voice one more time. Vader whispers to himself, before closing his eyes and beginning deep breathing. As always, an image of Salomé flashes through his mind. Her eyes, her face, her smile, all of it is as clear as ever to him. He breaks his meditation, opening his eyes. A small smile crosses his lips, the first expression he has had in a long, long while. He gestures towards the door, and in an instant it slides open. He stares at you as you attempt to sneak by in your disguise, and his face is once again stoic.
You stare back, the hood of your cloak falling and you realize your error. As you start to back away, Vader is already standing and walking to you and in a heartbeat, he pulls you towards him and holds you in his arms, refusing to let you go.
“I will never love you.” You whisper helplessly, all of your attempts to get out of his grip failing. Vader lets out a laugh, but only for a brief moment. He keeps you close to him, and seems to draw confidence from being by your side. He holds you in his arms, his face inches from yours.
“Oh, but you will. You will. In time, Salomé, you will love me. And when you do, everything else will become so much easier. I will protect you. I will always be by your side.” Vader whispers to you, and in his voice is so much confidence and resolve. He pulls you closer to him, just as determined to prove you wrong. And as you stand there, the only two people in the room, you can feel the air slowly grow colder around you, as if the Force is growing stronger with every passing second.
“I will see to it that you won’t have any other option but to love me. And when you do, everything else will fall into place.” He whispers, his voice filled with a confidence that you are starting to find yourself slowly but surely starting to believe.
“Love should be given freely. That wouldn't be love” You whisper, your heart racing from the stress of the situation, you try to push at his chest and he lets you this time. He looks down at you and holds your arm to keep you in place
A small hint of annoyance creeps into his voice now, just a tiny little crack in the mask of stoicism holding everything together. “Oh, no, it is absolutely love.” You’ve never heard him sound this stern before, as if he’s somehow insulted by what you’ve just said. “You’ll see. You won’t believe what I am capable of, but I can and I will make you love me. I will find a way. You will love and adore me by your own doing, of that I can assure you.”
Your mind drifts away to Gracies for a moment and you realize your mistake when Vader smirks down at you. Slowly, he dips his head down to you and whispers into your ear. “Go on, Abbie, tell me. Tell me who he is. Tell me who you love more than your own husband.” The Force around them seems to be crackling now.
“If I tell you, you’ll kill him.” You whisper in horror and this does not seem to faze him in the slightest. Instead, he only grows more determined, more resolved to do what he has set his mind to.
“Oh no, Salomé. This is a necessary sacrifice. I need to know.” Vader leans in even closer, his voice even quieter, as if only you and him can hear each other, as if the world is holding its breath. “So go on, Abbie. Tell me.” He whispers, a strange mixture of anticipation, confidence, and fear in this voice. He laughs slightly, and he grabs your chin and forces your head to look up at him.
You stay silent, hoping it will help. You carefully back away to try and run until you hit a wall and Vader moves with you, his hands caging you in. You can hear his breath on your ear and you screw your eyes shut. “Oh, you can’t run from me this time. I’ve got you.”
“Salomé. Tell me. Tell me, I need to know.” His voice sounds more pleading now, that hint of fear creeping back into it. He stares at you, the Force around you still crackling with power. And then, he leans in even closer, until you are practically touching noses.
“Tell. Me. Now. Y/N.” He whispers to you, the words sounding so much softer, so much more vulnerable than they usually do. Your eyes open as you hear your name for the first time in months. You hold his gaze as one of his gloved hands trail down your arm, stopping at your metal bracelet.
“Y-you called me by my name.” You whisper and Vader nods before he slips off your bracelet and takes it in his hands. As soon as he does, you try to take it back and he uses the force to press you to the wall. He knows, you think to yourself, he knows and I just confirmed it.
“This bracelet? This bracelet is the key. The key to it all.” His eyes meet yours, you know he’s right. He leans in so close again, until you feel his lips on your cheek, and you feel that same strange mixture of emotions in his eyes again. You try to struggle but you cant and watch on helplessly.
“I’m sorry, Abbie. I have to. For your own good.” He whispers, his voice once again filled with that soft, pleading, and vulnerable sound. “And besides, we both know I’m not a patient man. I will not wait for you to change your mind. I will not be denied.” His voice starts to shake a little a little as he fights to keep it down.
“If you hurt them, I will never love you.” You whisper angrily. He stares at you for a moment, before finally cracking into a faint smile. He lets out a small chuckle, and leans in even closer to you, until you are almost touching. His smile grows wider, a mix of confidence, determination, and excitement in it.
“Oh, but I think you will. I will find a way. I will find a way to make you love me, and I won’t stop until I do. You’ll see.” He whispers to you. There’s just the faintest hint of coldness in his voice.
He walks up to you, until he is practically touching you, and his face is inches from yours. You try not to look away, not to show that you’re scared. You want to remain defiant, to not let this monster see any sign of weakness. And yet, it’s not working. All that he can see now is your fear, and it seems to delight him.
He stares at you for a long moment. The moment stretches on, and you feel the Force building around you like a pressure cooker about to explode. And then, he does something that catches you completely off guard: he kisses you, a sudden, angry, passionate kiss, that fills you with rage, rage that you feel building inside you, and suddenly you feel like you could blow up the whole room. He breaks the kiss, and for a moment seems surprised at himself too, before that coldness comes back into his gaze, and he speaks, his voice still ice cold.
You look away, a tear rolling down your face and messing creating a streak of your makeup. There is a weird conflict in your heart, to trust Vader’s love for you or to hope to return to Gracies. Until now, you felt trapped but you never felt so conflicted. He was your husband, and you were his wife, you never even gave him a chance.
His coldness turns soft for a moment as he leans in again and softly pushes your hair down your face, so that it covers your makeup and hides the tear. In a move that surprises you again, he brushes a soft, gentle kiss to your cheek. “I’m sorry, Y/N. I really am.” His voice sounds so soft and kind, only you know it isn’t like him at all. He leans in again, but this time he doesn’t kiss you, and instead whispers so that only you can hear.
“Please forgive me. This, Y/N, is real. I love you.” He whispers, and you feel something in your heart stur. The same wonder you had when you first saw him, and you look at his face. He lowers his head again and kisses your jawline, his eyes shut as he lets out a shaky breath. “Please?” He asks, leaning lower to place kisses to your neck and shoulder.
You shut your eyes for a moment, trying to focus but his gentle kisses and soft bites stop your ability to think clearly. “Vader.” You whisper softly, your hands sliding up his back and tangling themselves in his hair. He lets out a content sigh as he presses you against the wall with a bit more force, his hands moving from your hips up to your waist as he tilts his head up to kiss you again.
Your lips meet in a passionate kiss, and his gloved hands slide your cloak off your shoulders and he pulls back to look at you. His brows furrow as he notices you aren’t wearing one of the gowns he had made for you and are just in a basic dress. “I suppose you really did mean to run away.”
“I did.”
“You did. Have you changed your mind?”
Your face heats up and before you can speak, he kisses you again, his hands undoing the back of your dress and tugging it down impatiently. Once the dress slides down, he lifts you off the ground slightly to kick it away with your bracelet before setting you down again. He kneels down before you, his face in line with your navel and he leans up, one of his large hands palming at one of your breasts while his lips find the other. He shuts his eyes as he gives your nipple messy open mouth kisses and you let out a moan, letting your head fall back against he hallway’s wall.
“Do you forgive me?” He mumbles against your breast, placing light kisses between soft nips. Before you can answer, he moves to your other breast and repeats his previous ministrations. You let out soft moans and your hands were tugging at his hair, making him groan against you. You were cautious not to be too loud, not wanting to draw attention from any clones. “I need you to forgive me. I love you.” He whispers, his hands gently massaging their way up from your calves to your thighs.
“I for-forgive you.” You whisper, you open your eyes to look down at him. Your hands were still tugging at his hair and he looks up to you with an almost dazed look in his eyes. His brows furrow when he notices how quiet you are trying to be before he kisses your stomach softly, he slides off his gloves, reveling one flesh arm and one cybernetic arm.
“Good, now tell me how good I’m making you feel.” He murmurs, slipping his flesh hand between your legs, a finger tracing your slit and gathering your growing arousal. “Tell me and I’ll make you feel better.”
“I feel really good.” You whisper, your hips bucking slightly searching for more and Vader tisks.
“Louder.” He says, before he dips his head and bites at one of your thighs. Vader’s hand still ghosting over your core and smirks as you drip onto his hand. “I can feel how wet you are, you cant deny it, whore.” He murmurs, dragging his lips against your thigh.
“I need you. I’m aching and I’m empty and I need you.” You say breathlessly, louder than before and as you try to grind down onto his hand, he uses the force to stop you. He smirks and slides a finger into you, watching as your breathing picks up and he sets a steady pace. Suddenly, he stands up again and uses the force to hold you up to the wall at his eye level.
You let out a gasp as Vader picks up his speed and presses against you, his lips settling on your collarbones, sucking and biting at them as he slides in a second finger. “If you need me so much, then you wont mind if I speed this up. A good whore would take it. And thats all you are, begging for me so desperately.” He murmurs against your chest, resting his head against it as he starts to rut against your leg to match his movements.
You steady your breath, looking at him before you try to take off his cape, or his armor, something to see him better and he kisses you passionately instead, pushing his tongue past your lips and practically swallowing your moans whole. “What do you think you’re doing, little one?” He whispers against the corner of your lips, his eyes shut as he waits.
“Wanted to see you.” You whisper back, and Vader smirks, adding a third finger and keeping up his fast pace, making  you whine. He digs his further a bit more, curling them until he find your spot, and you cry out.
“No need.” Vader whispers as he licks at your lips before pulling you in for another messy kiss. His fingers keep moving with perfect precision and you unravel on him. Vader pulls back enough to hear your moans and watch you as you pant to catch your breath
“Wanted touch you.”
“I’m touching you, that’s enough. Don’t be greedy.” He whispers in your ear before he slides his fingers out and licks them clean. He lets out a content sigh before he undoes his pants enough to get himself out and alines himself with your hole. You look at him as he focuses on sliding himself in slowly, groaning at the sensation. As he continues to sheath himself in you, you moan out, holding his shoulders tightly but your hands slip against his armor.
Once he’s fully inside, he pulls you in for another kiss, more gentle this time but still with passion. As he stays still, you try to move and he grabs your hips to stop you.
“Shit- Just give me a minute. I forgot how good this feels.” He groans out, biting at your earlobe. His hands slide up, groping at your body to keep you entertained as he collects himself.
“I need you.” You whine out desperately, trying to kiss him before he beats you to it, biting at your lip as he starts to move slowly, groaning against his lips and sighing.
“So fucking tight. Of course you are, you’re fucking tiny.” He groans into your ear and then picks up his speed. You keep trying to hold onto him, but your hands slip on his armor. Your moans and whines blend with his pants and groan as he hunches over you, licking and biting whatever skin he can reach, his hands bruising in the way he grabs at you.
“Say you're mine, little one. Say that you belong to me.” He groans against your neck, his movements rough and sloppy as he fucks into your hole. Vader bites into you harder than before and when you cry out, he kisses the bite. “You’re soaking my pants, you’re moaning like a little whore in my fortress, you’re mine, say it.”
“Y-yours. I’m yours… my lord.” You answer breathlessly, a tear runs down your face from the pain of his bite and he licks your tear away. Vader kisses the corner of your eyes and smiles against you. Your arms settle around his neck, hugging him to you and he leans in against your ear.
“All mine. You’re so precious. I promise, everyone will want to be you. No one will be as loved as you are Y/N. My little one.” He whispers his cybernetic arm rubbing harsh circles on your clit and you moan.
“I can’t.” You whisper, feeling your orgasm building up and you screw your eyes shut. Vader smirks and moves his hand faster as he keeps up his brutal pace.
“Show me, little one. Show me how good you feel.” He whispers, nuzzling against your ear as you finally release, hugging him tighter as your moans filled the hallway and a few thrusts later, Vader finishes in you, his head buried in the crook of your neck. As you both catch your breath, he carefully wraps you into your cloak and tucks his member back in his pants, and kisses your forehead.
“Do you love me now, Y/N.” He whispers, his lips still resting on your forehead.
“I-” You start, your mind a mess from everything that has just happened.
“More than you love Gracies Gras?”

Denial One Shot (Darth Vader x Reader)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: After venturing into a Sith Temple to try and find an edge on the current war, (Y/N) meets her enemy, Lord Vader, the man who killed her best friend and secret lover. He has been hunting both her and her alias down for months, following her across the galaxy, but little does she know, he has no plans to kill her. Takes place in the temple seen in the Star Wars Rebels season two finale. Reader was previously a Jedi and is in hiding due to order 66.
Warnings: Make out session
A/N: (Y/N) does not know Vader is Anakin, and Vader does not know (Y/N) is the Fugitive he has been searching for. This is once again a mix of suited Vader and nightfall Vader. In which, Vader wears the suit and mask, but he can take it off and looks like the Anakin we know and love.
Tumblr media
The temple was eerie, an odd feeling passing by with each step you took. It was the opposite of the one I grew up in, representing everything I was told to dislike, and yet I was here anyways. I had made up my mind to fight instead of continuing to run from the problem. I wasn’t a rebel, but I wasn’t an imperial either. I was the middle ground, a former Jedi with a new identity, a mask to shield my face so that I could live freely, but the saber still gave it away. I was good, too good to be a civilian having fun with an old relic, even though some still used them publicly. Some, as in him.
The Jedi fell and Lord Vader rose out of thin air. There was no preface, no foreshadowing, he just came, and everyone bowed their heads.
To outsiders he was a military leader trained in combat, who happened to use an imaginary power. To force users, like Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, and I, he was a Sith. We all knew it the second he began hunting us down. He wanted the Jedi dead and made it clear when he began searching for my alias as well. Everyone knew who she was, I was put on every single imperial security watch available, but I evaded it all I could. I forged a new saber, so that they couldn’t track me that way, and told people about how the female jedi on the Holonets from the clone wars died. The only people who truly knew were Obi-Wan and Ahsoka, since they too had done something similar. He was Ben, she was Ashla, and I gained the name Fugitive, a mask being the only way to keep track of my identity.
I couldn’t count how many storm-troopers I had killed by now, just that I did. I was forced to, to keep myself alive, because he wanted me turned in. I was always told to run, to flee from Vader because of what he’s done, but all I wanted was for the man to wind up dead. A lust for revenge had developed ever since I learned what he did to my best friend, Anakin Skywalker.
I don’t even know how he could have killed a warrior like him, but he did and now he’s gone. Slaughtered like any other while trying to save people in the temple, something someone with his character would have done naturally. The worst part is that everyone he was trying to save is dead too, and that he could have escaped with us, had he not done what he did. He had a wife, Senator Amidala, a good friend of mine, who also died that night, although I wasn’t sure if they ended on good terms.
The two had been arguing for a while, he believed she was cheating on him with Obi Wan, although she continued to deny it along with everyone else. I was the only one who he talked to about his problems willingly, even Kenobi would have to go through reading his mind to talk about personal issues. It was only when Anakin died that the truth came out, that being that Anakin was right, and she was seeing Kenobi.
I hadn’t recognized him after that point. I knew he was afraid he would be kicked out of the Jedi order if we found out he was dating another woman. Even further, the fact he knowingly was allowing the affair to happen, but it occurred anyways, and he lost everything with it. That was consequence enough, he didn’t need me to yell at him any further for going that far.
Still, I was angry, because I cared about Anakin.
And also loved him.
I denied it for years, the helpless prodding’s from Ahsoka when the two of us would spend hours upon hours with each other. We carried out the entire war effort, working extremely close together on missions. It was no surprise that I liked him, he had even mentioned subtly what things would be like if he hadn’t met her. It sounded like he regretted it, but I had no clue, due to us being force users.
I now stood in front of the man who took him away, the one that gutted him in the chest like a fish with no care whatsoever. The man that had been hunting me down under both my names since the night of the fall, the one that was known for murdering everyone in his path. I don’t know how he found me, I had a feeling we were being followed, but I didn’t care. We needed the Holocron inside of the temple, and Ahsoka now had it in hand. I could sense their distraught, both behind me looking at the Sith in front of us. They didn’t want to fight him; they were afraid to fight him. I felt differently, looking at his mask through the visors of my own.
“It was foretold that you would be here, our long-awaited meeting has come at last."
“This meeting is over,” Ahsoka said.
“Are you so sure?” the Sith questioned through the modulated voice his mask provided him, as I stepped forward.
“What are you doing?” Obi-Wan asked me, his breath becoming short.
“Leave."
“No," he shook his head. "Don’t do this."
“Leave. Now.”
I looked up at the temple’s ceiling as the walls started to drop down. It was collapsing on itself, since the Holocron had been taken from the Obelisk. There wasn’t much to do, but I knew I didn’t want to pull them into this. I turned around and outstretched a hand.
Ahsoka screamed as I force pushed both her and Obi-Wan back while the temple’s walls crashed down. I saw her figure fly back just before the drop and felt her gently land. There was a ship, they could leave, I would worry about myself after I killed him.
“We’re finishing this here,” I said. "I know you've been hunting me for the past months."
“You are courageous, unlike your friends,” the Sith mused. “Hateful.”
“You killed my best friend," I pointed out. "I want you to experience that same pain."
“Revenge is not the Jedi way,” he reminded. "Your confidence dilutes your ability to make rational decisions."
“I am no Jedi.”
“Then who are you? Your saber is unlike any I have ever seen, an identity successfully hidden behind a helm.”
“That’s none of your business, why have you been hunting me?” I asked. I felt the pressure of the Dark Side creeping against my mind's barriers, he was trying to invade.
“You would make a wonderful apprentice in the dark side,” Vader said. "You have already abandoned your training as a Jedi."
“I don’t side with murderers.”
“And yet you are one. I have seen your way of fighting Fugitive; you have killed countless of our troops and inquisitors.”
“Your Inquisitorious is an embarrassment, and I will never join you, not after what you did,” I called my saber to my hand, igniting it.
“Then you will die.”
There was this feeling of fear that attempted to wash over me, like he was attempting to throw me off, but I wasn't thinking about it anymore.
I ran full speed at him, force pushing myself up off the ground and into the air to try and put myself on the offensive. My blade met his right over his helmet, as he angled me back and I landed behind him. My automatic response was to try and swing for his legs, a move he evaded but had been surprised by. I knew I needed to be careful with how I played things. He would try and tire me out by just playing the defensive, but I also didn’t get that tired frow much stamina I built up during the war. Vader was also bigger, and stronger, meaning I’d need to use his weight to my advantage. I was quick, less stable, and grounded, and more agile in my movements.
We continued to take shots at each other, as he seemingly began to test me. It was a constant switch from the right to the left, bashing at each other from different angles and walking along with it. It was something Anakin and I always did, and it almost felt familiar. For whatever reason, I could feel myself getting into the rhythm Skywalker and I got into when we would train every day. After a certain point I would always switch my grip and force him to back off, and I did it purely out of muscle memory, shoving the Sith back.
“Your anger focuses you,” he commented. “Join me and I can enhance that power.”
“You killed him, the man I loved, do you truly believe I would ever consider that?”
“He is gone for a reason,” Vader said.
“He was the chosen one!” I shouted, interlocking lightsabers in a pursuit for power over the other. "You know why he lost his life?! Because he was trying to save everyone else, instead of actually caring for himself for once."
“(Y/N)."
I stumbled back immediately, hearing that name leave his mouth,
"What?"
My eyes widened beneath the visors, letting my guard down for just a moment.
It was all he needed.
I felt his immense force break through my walls and invade my mind, clawing through my memories and thoughts like a file. Not only that, but he immediately took me to the ground. It was quick, as he now straddled me, muscular thighs resting over my lower waist. Both my arms were pinned to either side with by the force, my saber in his hand.
I grunted, struggling under him and thrusting against his cod piece hoping it would make him budge but it barely made a difference. I couldn’t do a thing, as the Sith reached for my mask and pressed down on the sides. I felt it depressurize, as his gloved digits lifted it off my head, and I looked into his mask with my own eyes.
"How do you know my name?" I asked angrily as I fought underneath him to free myself.
There was no way of telling what he truly felt in that moment, holding the helm silently, breathing being the only indication he was still alive. I continued to try and do everything to get out of his grasp, but the Sith only sat there and took me in, his body heat lingering over my own. I felt like a mess, wondering where Ahsoka and Obi-Wan might be right now, realizing why Anakin lost his life to this man. I didn’t know how he knew my name, my real name, the one that no one had called me in months. I was fully pinned down, not giving up until I saw him reach for his own helmet.
"What are you do—"
My throat ran dry, amber eyes piercing through my body like a blade.
"Anakin."
It was him, with brown hair that held golden streaks just above his armor.
"(Y/N)."
Hearing his voice sent a shiver down my entire back, as I shuddered underneath him.
“I thought you died—they said Vader killed you—" there were tears welling up in my eyes, looking up at him.
“I am alive."
“Why did you turn?"
“The Jedi council was using us, Obi-Wan lied to me about Padme (Y/N), they were having an affair. But you know that already.”
“Obi Wan told us,” I trailed off.
“I know.”
“Do you plan to kill me?”
“No, that was never my intent," he emphasized lowly.
“So, what will you do?” I questioned.
“After separating myself from the order, I reflected much upon it,” Anakin started. "And came to terms with several of my mistakes."
“What mistakes?”
Still straddling me Anakin leaned down, placing his hands by either sides of my head and lowering himself to my ear.
“I was blindly dating filthy senator, when I had the love of my life right next to me the entire time."
"What do you mean?" I emphasized each word, my abdomen tensing as he got so close to me.
"There wasn't a day that went by that I didn't think of my future and imagine you by my side. I told myself it was our strong bond causing me to think of you constantly, due to the amount of time we spent together, but now, I feel completely different."
"Anakin," my heart was racing, as he continued to whisper into my ear.
"Maker, I missed you so much."
He was just trying to be friendly, that's all this was.
"Now, I know you are not that naive," he let out a deep chuckle, reading my mind.
"Is this your way of coercing me into joining the dark side?" I said softly, trying to play it off.
"There is no need to coerce you (Y/N), your heart is already doing all the work," Anakin told me. "All there is to do is to make up for lost time."
"No.."
"Continuing to deny it is only stalling the inevitable," he spoke in a playful way. "Your hatred towards the one you believed to be my killer only proves it more."
"I—" I cut myself off, as Anakin moved his head, now right over mine.
"What is it?" he asked me, his golden eyes flicking from my lips up to my eyes in quick fashion.
I gave in, nodding to his silent question and feeling the force lift off my hands.
Anakin pressed his lips to mine as I lifted my head up and met him midway. His robotic hand came down to my waist, the other combing through my hair as he helped hold my head steady. It was delicate and prepared, goosebumps crawling over my skin as his weight pressed me onto the cold temple floors. He was an expert in the way he worked around my mouth, the first time I had ever kissed anyone to begin with.
To think such a sacred place would be ruined due to our own shenanigans.
A Jedi and a Sith, making out in a temple with no care for sentiment.
His lips were chapped yet soft, and the more breaths we took between kissing the more swollen they became. Anakin didn’t seem to care though, continuing to go down on my neck allowing me to breath. He wasn’t going too far, but it was enough for the occasion, leaving marks I that wouldn’t leave for days.
It was madness.
Everything around us screamed in pleasure, the force happily chiming along with the two sides agreeing on something, even if it wasn’t an argument. Anakin had changed, and I couldn’t decide if it was for better or for worse.
If only those two could see me now, making love to the man that we had been running from for months. The copious amounts of rage had turned to attraction in a blink of an eye, rejoicing in his presence as my hand pressed against his tunic and I felt his abdomen underneath the fabric. He was such light and yet the darkness itself, drowning me in it as we sunk into a pool of ecstasy.
The cold stone floors were soon heated, as the temple grew humid and we both simultaneously agreed to take our tops off. It was the definition of multitasking, as I took off his armor and tunic, leaving behind a black pair of pants, and his boots. With the force he slipped my top off, gaining access to my collar bone and gracing it with his mouth. There was a possessive feeling in the air, as he took in my body for the first time with his own eyes as I did to him.
"You are so beautiful, it is intoxicating."
I felt myself smiling, sitting up and wrapping my arms around his neck, the both of us kissing deeply. This was it, holding our breath as we enjoyed one another, but the force was warning the both of us.
The temple shook, I almost forgot it was collapsing.
"We need to escape before we become trapped inside," Anakin said. "My ship is outside."
"And you assume I'm coming?"
"I know you are."
I laughed, acknowledging his foresight. We put on our clothes hurriedly yet thoroughly, as someone trained to handle life or death would. In truth, that was what we stood for, as Jedi and Sith both came together as one, in ways that would be frowned upon.
Except we didn't care.
We weren't denying it any longer.

Anakin on trial would be the exact opposite of a guy providing evidence against other people to get a lighter sentence, he'd be constantly adding to his own charges.
"yes, I did all the imperial war crimes you're accusing me of, also I tortured princess Leia, and her husband, I regularly tortured people during the Clone Wars too, also maybe committed some acts of terrorism but the definition of "terrorism" tended to get lost on me so I'm not sure, also I killed or at least caused the death of Padme Amidala, and killed at least one of her handmaids and her main bodyguard, also I murdered a Jedi and stole his lightsaber, on that note I killed younglings during order-66, and on that note I slaughtered a village of Tuskens when I was 19, also- hey wait a minute does me living as "Darth Vader" without telling anyone I was Anakin Skywalker count as identity fraud?" it's abysmal.
Some people think this is a strategy to make his trial take longer, but he's actually just genuinely penitent and if anything wants this trial to speed up and sentence him already but this "due process" thing keeps slowing things down.
And when they tell him the can't find evidence for... half of the things he's saying he's just like "wait so I can get away with it if I just kill the witnesses and erase some files? that's pretty kriffed up guys."
And when they finally start debating a sentence it never seems enough for him, and then they find out what he experienced under the empire as Palpatine's right hand man and... sweet Light Side of the Force how can this guy still even speak coherently.
Prison, execution, exile, etc. all pale in comparison to the physical and psychological torture this guy has been living for the past 20~ years, but all of that would be mega-illegal to do to a anyone, even a war-criminal so... the dude's just going to have to suck up the New Republic's "mercy" (Re: actual gosh darn ethics) and move on.

rip to rian johnson but star wars sequels would be way better if ben solo was just kinda cowardly and han solo coded so he defected from the jedi and went to be a fun swashbuckling anarchist space cowboy instead
and finn and poe have to find him and try to convince him to come back to the rebellion but hes afraid who he is and what he could become
also instead of luke trying to kill his nephew for NO REASON (so insanely out of character it boils my blood) he just realises after ben dips thats hes not cut out for teaching. and is living on a mandalorian colony as rebellion liason/ambassador with chewie and sometimes lando i guess (din djarin is there) he aids the rebellion (because of course he would fuck that plotline) but he wont stay on the rebel base because he doesnt like all the chosen one clout and mandalorians are very chill and mind their own business
han and leia are still together and play active parts in the rebellion because fuck that plotline too although they do disagree about the ben situation (leia is annoyed and han is understanding) poe and ben childhood friends and for what.
in this au, rey is raised in the empire and is a sith lord but she has doubts and isnt as abjectly disgusting as kylo ren because of course not. (appears slightly too interested in the rebellion when poe is captured and maybe??? possibly lets finn and poe escape but thats up for debate.) rey gets more evil over course of movies before turning to light for plot drama and a satisfying zuko arc.
force awakens timeline
prophecy that a new jedi will rise and take down the dark side. rey and sith lord (dk who but fuck snoke im writing him out) assume it is the missing ben solo (its finn and rey tho fr) and are intent on finding him. movie opens on rey being evil probably and capturing poe. also finn as a character actully needs no real changes hes great. and then next scene space pirate ben solo doing his thing (but without identity revealed so we dont know who he is yet he may go by kylo because funny)
instead of luke poe has a lead on missing almost-jedi before he dipped ben solo and is searching for him on leias orders.(rebellion also believe the prophecy is about him. but nuh uh) torture scene and escape scene doesnt need to change but show reys nuances and how lost she is.
in the interest of narrative poe and finn still crash on tatooine but finn manages to pull poe out of the crash. (finn still gets the jacket at some point because i say so) poe is too injured to fly so they seek out help and and meet ben solo who saves them from pirates or something idk. (but neither know who the other is)
finn and poe convince ben solo to be their pilot still thinking hes a random smuggler named kylo. they get along very well, especially finn and ben. rey by this point is tracking their whereabouts
they end up on that lightsaber planet and ben gets the weird darth vader nightmare and freaks out, (hes afraid of being evil or something idk) poe is getting suspicious now also finn feels the force and takes up the lightsaber. rey comes and finn trys to hold her off. finn get hurt and drops lightsaber. ben is forced to take it up and his identity is revealed as rebel reeforcements led by han and leia arrive and they see him fighting. rey and ben have a weird charged moment (yes i guess i am still making reylo a thing but its reyben now and its woke so shh) and in a dramatic desperate effort he manages to knock her lightsaber away with the force. poe crawls into a plane at somepoint and blows up reys ship. the rebels destroy the stormtroopers but rey captures finn and escapes in a stolen ship.
ben has a oh-shit-i-said-id-never-use-the-force-again related existential crisis which makes him freak out and leaves. a distraught finn-less poe calls him a coward. poe picks up the discarded lightsaber and the jackettm and sadly packs them up. leia tells him about the starkiller and poe volunteers to go on the starkiller and save finn. han and leia have a sweet moment and han decides to go with poe on the suicide mission, chewie goes too.(chewie arrived at somepoint i guess)
mid hostage situation finn blocks reys force attempt and shes shook up. he sees something in her (finn is a beautiful sweetheart) and he trys to appeal to her. she force chokes him and books it out of there. but it is clear she fears him a little. he escapes with mind tricks and runs into han poe and chewie on the deck. finnpoe moment fr. poe gives him his jacket back in order to get the keep it it looks good on you line.
meanwhile ben is back on his ship(i guess its the falcon?) and he thinks about finn and his mom and luke or something.. a dream maybe?? idk something emotional and motivational for his arc. and he goes to a box under the floor in his ship and pulls out a green lightsaber. he turns the ship around.
on the ship poe finn han and chewie are planting the bombs and escaping when they get stopped by stormtroopers ordered by rey. poe is about to be shot by a big droid thing when it is cut in half by ben wow big reveal hes here oooo ah. rey is shot in the shoulder by chewie and angrily orders more stormtroopers. they cant take them all. han sacrifices himself by blowing up the bridge. he tells finn and poe to find luke in the mandolorian colony ben is distraught him and han have an emotional goodbye he tells him to tell leia he’s sorry and that he loves him and he proud of him then he makes chewy get ben out of there and he blows himself up. leia senses it v sad rip man but he had to die to intensify plot drama
rey chases them onto the ice planet and another weird charged moment. mind link established??? this time ben is too angry and grieving though so its not a good match and she wounds him real bad all over hes v scarred now. poe shoots at rey and throws lightsaber at finn. he gets ben onto the ship and finn and rey have the big force awakens show down. finn uses the force v powerful all that jazz the good guys get away. on the ship finn mentions how he felt a connection with rey to poe and claims he sees good in her
movie ends with meeting luke on mandolore. ben is very traumatised wont really speak to finn or poe and avoiding luke. finn returns lukes lightsaber and rey has doubts movie over. movies ends with ominous rey ben mind link
final notes (on first movie and overarching rewrite plans)
finn
finn is the protagonist of this movie so it would be much more character heavy on him them the original. more in depth on his stormtrooper trauma, how he always chooses the people he loves over the cause and his reluctance to join the rebellion. his friendship with poe and the han/leia parallel’s especially. relationships with han and ben important for his character exposition and he plays a key role in supporting both rey and bens character progression. possesses the strong sense of mercy and kindness at the heart of the star wars franchise.
rey
rey is raised in the first empire and does not know anything different. when she meets finn who was able to rebel and escape from the same system she is trapped in she becomes plagued by doubts and projects all of her hatred and resentment onto finn to compensate, but it is clear she fears him. to escape from her doubts she fixates on finding and capturing ben solo imagining him to be a frightening and terrible adversary. however when she meets him they see eachothers minds, and she sees how plagued by doubt and fear he is, how he runs from everything and he sees her too. they connect and develop a strange mutual fascination/understanding. this is put askew by finns appearance at the end of the movie in defence of ben. reys fear of finn increases when she sees the true extent of his power. she fears and hates equally finns strength of character and easy goodness and by extension hates ben for his alliance with finn. she blames finn for “taking” ben from her.
ben solo
kylo ren is a disgusting blight on the star wars names so ben solo is being completely reclaimed by me into a different character because i fucking hate that stupid pretentious eboy. instead ben solo is an incredibly han solo coded character with a heart of gold and deep love and loyalty to his friends and family. his main weakness as a character in this rewrite is his fear and lack of self belief. ben is terrified of being a jedi and of his own power. he fears his own nature and was so afraid he would become his grandfather that he ran from the jedi altogether. ben solo is a runner that wont face his problems, he runs from the jedi and from his parents to avoid failing or becoming something terrible. finn and ben recognise the need to run in eachother (although important distinction finn runs because he doesn’t want to fight for a cause. and ben runs because hes afraid he will be the reason the cause fails) and ultimately encourage eachother to break the cycle and stand their ground (well finn motivated ben in this movie, finns not fixed yet.) Bens arc in these movies is about learning to live with his own nature and fighting for what he believes in despite his fear. also dealing with mommy issues (ben is kind of jealous of poe and leias relationship the son she wanted or something blah blah blah etc) and being a malewife to his murder girlfriend. his job is kind of to support and fight with finn and later rey and help them save the world
finnpoe (will be a gay couple)
their friendship will be front and centre in these movies because they represent duty vs personal loyalty. poe puts the cause above all else and values his own life and personal relationships little. finn on the other hand is disillusioned with establishment cause of stormtrooper trauma and wants to protect himself and others from it. poe is the first person that finn truly bonds with and loves. he puts poe above everything, including being a jedi and the rebellion. this leads to a lot of fighting and discord between finn and poe as finn doesn’t understand how important the rebellion is to poe and poe doesnt get why finn is trying to protect him from it. ultimately though poe teaches finn faith and belief and finn teaches poe to accept love and value himself. (also many hanleia parallels) the two of them are the harbingers of a new age. poe as future leader of the new republic and finn as the jedi messiah or whatever. in terms of romance, im thinking slowburn. baity first movie, kiss at the end of the second and established relationship by the halfway mark of the third.
also when rey eventually joins the light in the beginning she refuses to talk to ben (cause of romantic drama i havent thought of yet but centres around some sort or betrayal in the second movie) or finn (because hes her narrative foil and slow burn best friend forever) so her first friend is poe and she kind of follows him around in her first few months before she eventually bonds with finn 4eva. her poe shadowing has lots of cute friend moments where they fly together and he tries to talk her down about finn and the ben drama but also more importantly it foreshadows her leadership ability and tactical mind as she gives him advice and aids him with the rebellion behind the scenes (also leads to leia taking rey under her wing probably because poe is her surrogate son and mirror) which will eventually lead to her and poe leading the republic together because in my mind rey is a jedi but actively a member of republic government because ben can’t do politics and finn won’t but shes great at it so she’d be a perfect jedi liason and vice president to poe. meanwhile finn and ben lead the jedi. finn as a knight travelling across the galaxy and ben as a teacher. (luke is happy in retirement rn on mandalore but leia is still probably an advisor in the republic because retirement is definitely not for her) and everyone is happy the end. force ghost han solo is clapping.

Star Wars takes I’m sick of seeing:
1. When a Jedi chooses to no longer follow the path of a Jedi, they are automatically a Sith. That’s like saying if you are no longer a practicing Jew, you’re automatically a Catholic. Being a Sith has a specific set of beliefs and doctrines that must be followed, the same as being a Jedi. One can choose to no longer be a Jedi and *not* be evil or Fallen in any way, shape, or form, and this does not make them a bad person.
2. That if the Jedi were just a bit more Mandalorian, it would have Solved All Their Problems and prevented Anakin from Falling. Usually this means that if the Jedi just showed more emotion/weren’t emotionally repressed/if Obi-Wan just told Anakin he loved him/was proud of him, Anakin wouldn’t have made the decision on multiple occasions to slaughter children. There are so many “fix it” fics where this is the underlying theme.
3. Likewise, the Jedi repress their emotions. The Jedi teach their students to be *mindful* of their emotions, to not react based on a person’s first initial knee jerk response. They asked Anakin to have the same level of emotional control as a kindergartener--you don’t get to punch someone because they took your favorite toy and broke it.
3. When Mandalorians adopt children (with or without parental permission) and indoctrinate them into their culture of weaponry and violence, it’s cute; when the Jedi adopt children (usually with parental permission) and teach them to control their emotions and their psychic powers based on those emotions, they’re an evil child-snatching cult. Only the Mandalorians are capable of forming a family bond and despite being communally raised, the Jedi are incapable of forming those same bonds, probably because of all that emotional repression. But if you violate the rules of the Mandalorians, you are cast out of said “family”, whereas even someone like Darth Vader was offered a way home.
4. Love = Attachment. Attachment is about greed and possession. We are told *and* shown on multiple occasions that you can love someone and let them go. Obi-Wan does it multiple times. But when you go beyond love, when you refuse to accept loss, whether it’s external like death or internal like someone choosing to leave you, that’s when you move into Attachment, and *that* is what leads to the Dark side.
ETA, because apparently I wasn’t done:
5.  The Jedi Order, which has existed for tens of thousands of years, should change everything about itself and its doctrines to suit one kid who doesn’t actually care about following other people’s rules in any circumstance.
6. Anakin Skywalker is the only Jedi who ever treated the clones like Real People, despite several blatant examples showing otherwise, and the fact that he was totally chill with them having their identities and free will stripped away from them. But because he was the only one who was Raised By A Real Mother, he’s the only one capable of showing compassion to other people.
7. That because they have accelerated aging, this makes the clones child soldiers. If they were completely non-human, no one would blink an eye at the idea of a species maturing at a different rate than humans. So they’ve only been alive for ten years? That does not make them children. Grogu has been alive for over 50 years and he’s still a toddler. Calling them children is infantilizing and demeaning.
8. Listen, I love whumping on Obi-Wan as much as the next fangirl, but I’m kinda getting tired of the whole “Obi-Wan never goes to medical/doesn’t sleep/doesn’t remember to eat” thing. He raised a whole ass padawan to adulthood. We have never actually seen him deny himself medical care, sleep, or food. He might work longer hours during the war, but so does everyone else. And the only reason I can justify him not eating isn’t because he “forgets” so much as the poor guy probably has a terrible case of decision fatigue. If all he has to do is walk to the chow hall and get served what everyone else is being served, I don’t think he’d have that much of a problem. There are, of course, extenuating circumstances to all of these based on any prior trauma he may or may not have, but otherwise it’s infantilizing.
This post is brought to you in part by fandom as well as interacting with members of the Star Wars costuming groups.

When did Dumbledore start his giant grudge against Tom Riddle? What triggered it?
From what we see in the memory of Dumbledore and Tom Riddle's first meeting, we started off at day 0 with this enmity, and the trigger was that Dumbledore... doesn't seem to actually like children all that much. Oh, it's all well and good when they're pleasant and listen with bright and attentive eyes to him, but Tom Riddle was guarded and that seems to have been enough. The way Dumbledore reads nefarious intent into everything Tom, an eleven-year-old, says or does speaks for itself.
(As it is I find Tom in the orphanage memory acts very much like a normal child. Distrustful of authorities and jaded, yes, but that's hardly surprising given his background. Dumbledore's lack of understanding and immediate dislike of what is essentially a troubled child is what I find concerning about the chapter.)
Dumbledore goes on to explain to Harry how... I can't even paraphrase this, you're getting a quote (only a paragraph, or we'd be here all day):
"I had, as I have already indicated, resolved to keep a close eye upon him, and so I did. I cannot pretend that I gleaned a great deal from my observations at first. He was very guarded with me; he felt, am sure, that in the thrill of discovering his true identity he had told me a little too much. He was careful never to reveal as much again, but he could not take back what he had let slip in his excitement, nor what Mrs. Cole had confided in me. However, he had the sense never to try and charm me as he charmed so many of my colleagues." (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, page 239-240)
(Yes, the guy kept going, beautifully at one point admitting "So I never actually caught him doing anything wrong at any point, but I feel confident in saying he was being evil off-screen all the same" and at another explaining "He had dark glamour, Harry", but I'm trying to be brief here.)
So.
Dumbledore, per his own admission, couldn't catch Tom out on anything even though he kept close watch and we know how uncharitable he is in his interpretation of Tom's words and actions. Notice too, though, how he thinks Tom viewed their first meeting: he believes Tom Riddle was an eleven-year-old politician straight out of Lord Hadrian Potter fanfics. Tom keeps his distance from a professor he doesn't like and Dumbledore says, "Ah, the Machiavellian youth recognizes me as a worthy opponent. How sensible of him."
You can't make this shit up.
So, no, Tom never stood a chance with Dumbledore. It was one-sided Machiavelli at first sight.
(And no, I don't believe this was mutual. Tom acts entirely too normal in the job interview memory, he's having a job interview and Dumbledore is Obi-Wan meeting Darth Vader on the Death Star. It's hilarious, but uh telling.)

Tbh I really wish they had Ahsoka address that her idealized version of Anakin isn't reality and never was. And that's a common abuse survivor thing! Literally wouldn't be difficult to put in her character. Iirc Force Vision Anakin basically said something like "you never learn" because she still is just running instead of facing the fact Anakin's fall was never about her and never her fault. There were signs certainly but scattered across a long period of time and with different people.
I wish we could get Huyang pointing out that holding onto the past and her child version of Anakin isn't healthy and honestly an ancient Jedi droid would be literally the perfect character. Not to mention her habit of running instead of facing it head on. There's this great opportunity here for the character and while I'm losing hope, if not Huyang than someone like Ezra, a character who's learned to let go. Ahsoka's biggest flaw at this point is her inability to move forward and that needs to be addressed before giving her more powers.
I was actually JUST thinking last night that it would've been SO COOL to have Huyang sort-of step in as a surrogate Master for Ahsoka to help point out the fallacies in her unhealthy coping mechanisms and way of looking at things. Like when Ahsoka says "the Jedi failed", Huyang points out that actually they didn't, or at least, if they failed then it's not their fault and CERTAINLY not because they didn't allow in enough people who weren't Force sensitive. When she pushes about Sabine, he can point out that not only would the Order not have accepted her, there's a REASON she wouldn't necessarily be happy as a Jedi and it's not healthy for either of them for Ahsoka to try to push Sabine to acquire skills she quite simply does not and cannot ever have.
And of course, with Anakin, he can be even more explicit.
One of the things they've given Huyang as a characterization in this show is the ability to be very bluntly honest sometimes. What's frustrating is that one of the few places he ISN'T is when the topic of Anakin comes up. He tells Sabine that she's a terrible Padawan, worst he's ever seen. He tells Hera that people like her because she disobeys orders when she cares about things. But when asked about Anakin, the most he says is that Anakin was "intense." That's it. It might've been interesting for Huyang to be a little less vague about Anakin and perhaps one of the ONLY people Ahsoka's ever actually told about Anakin having been Vader and so he can speak to that more candidly and honestly. He wasn't just "intense," he was a traitor. He broke his vows, he disrespected everything the Jedi stood for, he was a murderer. You could explain away his vagueness about Anakin by having Ahsoka say that she wants this to remain a secret, that she never told the Ghost crew about her master's true identity and she doesn't want them to know because of how she thinks it might change the way they look at her. So maybe he's more candid with Ahsoka herself, but when Hera asks, the best he can say is "intense."
Have Ahsoka tell Huyang that Anakin was a good Master, and Huyang can point out that, while that may have been true at one point, it wasn't ALWAYS true. It didn't REMAIN true. He betrayed her. He tried to kill her. He refused to come back for her. Because one of the things Ahsoka was struggling with in Rebels was figuring out how to connect the Anakin she knew as a child with what she knew of Darth Vader and what caused Anakin to change so much. It might've been interesting to have Ahsoka recognize that there were pieces of Vader in the Anakin she knew, too, even if she didn't recognize it at the time. There were secrets he kept from her, moments where he could get SO ANGRY. It might've been interesting for her to discuss that terrible awful training from TOTJ and have Huyang point out just how fuck awful that kind of training truly was. Even if it was done out of a desire to protect her, that didn't actually make it okay or a valid method of training. No true Jedi would have asked that of her or done that to her, not because they were weak, but because all she would've learned from it was FEAR. And every true Jedi knows that strength doesn't only come from pain.
Ahsoka can still ultimately choose to forgive him and choose to focus on the good memories she still has of him, but she can ALSO choose to accept that he betrayed her and that he was a bad master. Anakin was both. He was someone who cared about her, and she DID learn some good lessons from him, but he also impacted her in ways that were decidedly negative. Forgiving him should require accepting BOTH. It's not even just "He did his best" although that gets us a LOT closer to the desired goal here, it's more like "He wasn't all bad."
I don't know, I think there could've been a LOT more complexity given to Anakin and Ahsoka and their relationship in this show and what we got was just... so so shallow. And to be honest, that's this show's biggest sin, just how SHALLOW all of it is. I'm not at all shocked that Filoni, who called Anakin the "greatest Jedi of all time", is choosing to portray Anakin in this way and sort-of... erase and gloss over his sins to just declare him a "good master." But it's still disappointing because there's so many really interesting ways this show could've explored Ahsoka and it chose none of them.
I think about that line from Rebels when Maul tells Obi-Wan "Look how far you've fallen" and Obi-Wan retorts, "Look what I have risen above." Because that's the core of Obi-Wan, right, he RISES ABOVE Anakin. He rises above Anakin's mistakes and failures, he rises above Anakin's betrayal, he rises above his losses and grief to become better than Anakin ever could. He doesn't let Anakin's failures become his own, he doesn't let Anakin's darkness drag him down alongside. And I feel like they're trying to go for something similar with Ahsoka here, but they just aren't reaching it. Because in order to have Ahsoka rise above, they first need to acknowledge that there's something there TO rise above.
I don't have any hope left in this show, it's made its stance clear and there's only a single episode left in this season. It's not going to suddenly decide to criticize Anakin NOW, and Ahsoka's already had her glow-up emotional climax like 2-3 episodes too early. This show is what it is at this point.

post-order 66 identity fuckery au because vader decides he misses rex. he can't have rex, but he does have that clone who rex always spoke of with grudging fondness and who cody often compared rex's personality to and--
that's close enough, right?
---
CC-1010 doesn't know why he says it, probably due to his impending death, but he's gotten Vader's attention off of the troopers that fired on him and solely focused on him, and he can march on entirely happy with that.
So maybe something in his brain misfires, because he feels Vader's invisible grip around his throat and something angry and petty and cruel rears up in him and he spits,
"He would be fucking ashamed of you."
And 1010 doesn't. Actually know exactly who he's talking about? Entirely? But he knows it hits because Vader freezes and then Vader roars, and instead of being choked to death or his neck snapped or his head separated from his body, 1010 hits the wall again and again and again and--
1010 wakes up.
He's a little surprised.
He doesn't entirely remember why he's surprised.
He doesn't...remember a lot, actually.
But he wakes up, and he's in a set of officer's quarters (seems right), with the hum of machinery telling him he's on a starship (seems wrong). His throat's as dry as Geonosian dust but when he stumbles blearily into the fresher to get a drink, a jolt of electricity zips up his spine when he catches sight of himself in the mirror.
(Wrong wrong wrong wrong--)
1010 runs a palm over his light-colored hair with a frown. The ends are short and prickly, like he'd only just buzzed it. It matches with his face--mostly unscarred, devoid of any tattoos--and it looks familiar, but the perspective seems off, somehow, like the angle of viewing is wrong (wrong wrong wrong).
But 1010 just shrugs, and turns on the water to drink straight from the tap. He's pretty sure that he's used to everything being Wrong.
He's wiping his mouth on a towel when the door of his quarters opens--
catches sight of black armor and feels fear anger terror hate fear fear fear
--and steps out of the fresher to snap to attention, adrenaline kicking through his veins.
"Sir," he salutes crisply.
Darth Vader watches him, silently. Tilts his death's head like a hunting bird eyeing its prey.
"At ease, Captain."
1010 blinks.
He's pretty sure he was a commander. Was he demoted?
But now that he thinks about it, he can't really remember his last posting. He knows that he was in charge of other clones, in a position to give orders, and that was well within the duties of a Captain.
Besides, it's not like Darth Vader could be wrong.
"Are you well enough for duty?" Vader asks. He gestures toward the armor rack in the corner, which holds a set of plastoid lined in royal blue. The colors and markings are familiar enough, even if 1010 thinks it would look better in red.
1010 mentally checks himself over: besides the lingering feeling of Wrongness, his body is entirely free of pain. It seems novel, for some reason.
"Yessir."
"That's good, Rex," Vader says, voice oddly cautious. "Get geared up, and we'll go to the command deck."
Rex, 1010 thinks. He recognizes the name, fondness curling in his chest at the sound of it. It's a good name.
Rex nods easily, which makes Vader relax.
He crosses over to his armor and pulls the jaig-eyes helmet over his head.

How the are as fathers:
Not proofread!!!!
Darth Vader
- He was terrified of being a real father.
- When you told him, he turned and left you abruptly without explanation.
- How could he be a father if he was just another broken man that worked for the empire.
- He lost two other children, he couldn’t lose a third.
- You heard before you saw him.
- “How far along?” Is all can question at the moment
- You both welcomed twin girls into the world.
- He felt such a bond with them when they were born.
- They had a strong force signature.
- One twin was identical to you while the other was a mini Anakin.
- Every night he’d be work on bonding with them over the force, like he had you.
- He wanted to have a bond that would keep his daughters close to him.
- He’d take them into his chamber and take his mask and suit off so he could have real skin contact with them.
- He was worried they’d be scared of him, but they fell in love with him as quick as he fell in love with them.
- One you named after Padame.
- The other after his mother.
- He couldn’t thank the universe enough for blessing him with not just one, but two children who he could get a second chance at fatherhood.
- They followed him everywhere
- They were beyond strong with the force
- Vader stayed by you’re side up until the girls were a month old, then he had to return to being a Sith Lord.
- The inquisitors were jealous of you’re daughter’s connection with the force.
- He’d train them to be stronger then him, he needed them to survive.
- They had him wrapped around they’re tiny fingers.
- He’d conquer the galaxy for you three.
- He had a new purpose, and he knew Padame would be proud of him.
- He was overwhelmingly protective of three of you.
- But his daughter could use a lighter savour by the age of 6.
- They had his competitivenes.
- They also had the ability to bring out his light side, the Anakin in him.
- He couldn’t thank you enough. He’d worship you.
- You were his angel sent from Padame.
- His daughters were his motivation to get better. They adored him.
- You gave him the family he missed out on.

thinking again about how the idea of anakin kind of haunts the OT, how he's a story to his son and a ghost to obi-wan, both present and absent whenever darth vader's on screen. he seems like a myth inside a myth, a figure belonging to a lost golden age, a hero story of old. i think it's kinda why the prequels feel so profoundly mythic to me, they're like one step beyond the hero's journey, filling out an implied pantheon in the OT stories. the fall of the republic feels kind of like a titanomachy, battles of an older generation of gods.
it's like anakin is a heroic precursor, whose brief, golden life in the light was coextensive with our brief glimpse in the films of that civilized world that was lost with his fall. that lost identity is just one step higher and beyond into the realm of legend, the realm of the jedi, when the world was good and noble, with honor and justice. darth vader may roam among the OT heroes but anakin lingers in the story as a story until the very end, when he returns to destroy the last of the titanic elder generation, making way for the new age of heroes.

I noticed that you're diving into Batman comics recently, and I decided to ask you: do you think that Batman's relationship with his Robins is his "redemption" story? I mean, even though this wasn't the case when Dick was first introduced, the modern Robins are very much pulling the Dark Knight out of the shadows. It's not the same as Luke Skywalker unmasking Darth Vader in Episode VI, but it's kinda the same situation - they're causing Bruce Wayne to wake up under the Batman mask...
Ask a dozen different comics writers, all who are just as foundational/not foundational as each other because there's no singular creator here, and you'll get a dozen different answers to this question, but! I would say that, yes, Batman's relationship with Robins is a "you saved me from the dark" story--not that Bruce needs a redemption in the same way a villain does, but he does need pulling back from the light. Modern versions of the first Robin almost always come back to this--Dick Grayson brought light and laughter to Wayne Manor, that Bruce was in a dark place and Dick brought him out of those shadows:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Robin: Year One + Detective Comics #1000) That when he starts wandering back into the dark, Robin is there to go, "Nah, that's bullshit." It's not always necessarily something that Bruce easily accepts, sometimes he feels guilty about what that cost Dick, to be that for him--though, Dick usually points out that he chooses what he wants to do and that he gained so much when Bruce saved him, just as much as he gave back to Bruce. It's not just when he was a kid, but even as an adult, Dick is still the one that most often does so as an adult--where sometimes he does have to back off that, because Bruce relies on him so heavily for it (and then winds up calling Bruce to talk to him about it anyway 😂) and Dick often just naturally steps into that role, like in the recent Gotham War storyline. That's how deeply embedded the theme is in their dynamic--that it's not just that Dick pulls him out of the dark, it's such a common occurrence that sometimes the question has to be asked, "Does this have a cost on Dick, to be the light to Bruce's darkness?"
Tumblr media
(Batman: Urban Legends, "The Murder Club") Because that often is the role Dick plays in Batman's life--he's not the only one that Bruce trusts with this, he has a whole roster of friends (he's brightened by his friendship with Clark, for example, or Alfred emotionally supports him constantly and helps stabilize him), but if you have to pick one heart of the family, of Bruce's family, it's absolutely Dick Grayson:
Tumblr media
(Batman: Urban Legends, "The Murder Club") To the point, that when others can't do it, they call in Dick to be the Bruce Whisperer like Tim did in that Urban Legends story or like Alfred does when Bruce is spiraling over Damian's death:
Tumblr media
("Robin Rises") But honestly, it's true of all of them:
Tumblr media
(Batman 2016) I'm focusing most on Dick here because a) that's the majority of what I've read since I came back to comics and b) because he does tend to be the one that falls into that role the most often, but all of the Robins generally are there to remind Bruce to be a better person, all of his friendships with the other superheroes like Clark and Diana and Barry are there to help him be a better person:
Tumblr media
(Batman: Knight Terrors) While they're all inextricably tied to their costumed identities, these are people who keep him grounded as Bruce Wayne rather than stripping him down to just Batman, they're the ones who remind him that they're not just soldiers in a war, they're his sons, they're family, and he doesn't keep them around because he needs fighters, he keeps them around because he loves them. That, while it's rarely commented on directly, it is woven into the themes of Batman that his character arc is: he lost his parents, he lost the stability that family would give him, but he gained a son, he grew to accept people into his heart again, to love them, to grow into a better person for them, to come out of the dark for them, to not let what happened to his parents happen to his son:
Tumblr media
(Nightwing 2016 #84) There's a ton more examples that I can't overload this post with (and also I'm still catching up) but, yeah, it's very, very much a theme with many authors that the Robins bring Batman out of the dark, they're his salvation, they're the healing of a little boy who lost his parents growing up and healing through taking in children of his own. Children teach you how to love, they teach you compassion, they make you a better person. In that, the story of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker is very much a sibling theme to Batman and the Robins.

AHSOKA SPOILERS AHEAD
(also, long post apparently)
i'm actually kind of obsessed with this latest tidbit from baylan. the fact that he decided to reframe the fall of the jedi both as something inevitable, a repeated pattern throughout history, and that they had coming due to their own weakness, instead of what it is (genocide).
we've all seen how different jedi responded, how some became inquisitors or otherwise turned to the dark side, how some turned their backs on the force entirely (like kanan tried to), how some stayed completely hidden and separate (yoda), how some ended up training new jedi (like kanan also did)
it's really interesting to me that baylan is aware of the other "wild" jedi (bokken jedi, apparently), and considers himself different and separate from them, but shin still associates herself with the bokken jedi. when they first appeared, given their red lightsabers, i figured they had to be more sith-aligned, though probably not outright sith. if they're gray enough for shin to still consider herself as jedi-trained before baylan corrects her, then that's super interesting to me also.
the other day i rewatched the first two episodes of rebels. the very first episode opens with darth vader telling the grand inquisitor to hunt down the force sensitive children - and any surviving jedi that could train them. i am beyond obsessed with the apparent inevitability that jedi will train new jedi, but moreso also with the different ways we see this play out.
there's kanan, who retains his jedi identity (obviously there were some bumps along the road with that) and has a proper padawan he trains/raises to be a jedi.
there's ahsoka "i am no jedi" tano, the "part-timer", who does also apparently take on a (basically not force sensitive) padawan and abandons her. we also see her refuse to train grogu.
and now there's baylan skoll, who trains a padawan to be "more" than a jedi, who seems (at least sometimes) reluctant to kill other jedi, who has semi-fond memories of the temple, whose padawan seems actually uncertain about their status as jedi or not.
both ahsoka and baylan definitely exist in the gray between jedi and sith, with ahsoka basically still being a jedi and baylan being much more dark side-adjacent.
it's just so fascinating to me that we've seen multiple jedi/former-jedi/jedi-adjacent people that are so bitter and disillusioned with the jedi order, so critical of their failures and shortcomings, that they seem to ignore the reality of what happened. they were massacred. their home and the center of their culture was burned, their children were murdered, they were shot down by their own troops in the field, they were chased and hunted down and killed. regardless of the very real flaws of the jedi order, they didn't deserve that. no one does.
i think baylan's reframing makes a lot of sense as a classic trauma response. "this bad thing that happened was actually for a reason beyond palpatine's agenda, the jedi were too weak." because if there were real reasons, then it's preventable. he also, though, views it as a continuing pattern in history. the key thing here is that he thinks (apparently) it's a pattern that he can stop. he seems to both think it was the fault of the jedi for their weakness but also an inevitable pattern of history. he addresses both by raising his apprentice to be "more" than a jedi and by this mysterious plan to stop the cycle of history from repeating itself.
this is the longest post i've written about star wars in a minute and i'm not entirely sure my thoughts have made sense (definitely doubtful they'll be read). i also haven't looked at what people have been saying for this week's episode, so it'll be hilarious if someone else has already spoken on this. it's turning around in circles in my brain. i just think the post-order 66 jedi are really really interesting and i think about them a lot

He a brilliant tactician who’s only limitation is that Tim Zahn can only write like four types of fight scenes. He can psychoanalyze entire cultures just from their art. He rivals Spock for the amount of secret siblings he has. He’s not like other Imperials he only wants his people to try their best. He has an alien bodyguard that will kill you with no hesitation. His likelihood of caring about collateral damage varies widely with each appearance. He knows Darth Vader’s secret identity. He has a custom paint job on his Star Destroyer. His employees love him and think he’s the best thing since sliced cheese. His coworkers think he’s annoying and hate his guts. He’s constantly taunting people into fighting him because his culture doesn’t believe in preemptive strikes. Everyone who writes him has to come up with a convoluted reason why he wasn’t in the galaxy for either Death Star. He’s not a bad guy, sometimes he sympathizes with the rebels. He’s the warlord of the Empire. He’s blue.
