THAT is the importance of an adult who Understands.
one of the things that i always come back to when i think about sasuke is that sasuke has virtually everybody in the village fooled.  you couldn’t find a more messed up kid in all the hidden leaf if you tried, but you wouldn’t know it to look at him, because he can’t afford to acknowledge or display weakness - firstly, because weakness means he isn’t strong enough to take on itachi, and secondly, because signs of struggle on sasuke’s part might mean that an authority figure tries to involve themself in his life, and sasuke doesn’t want anyone interfering in something he sees as a personal quest.  he doesn’t see himself as a child who needs to be looked after by adults; he sees himself as an adult in a frustratingly small body, and he wants all the other adults to leave him alone and let him do what he needs to do.  he doesn’t want meddling.  he wants everyone who has the power to potentially keep him from getting what he most desires to remain oblivious to his true state of mind, to not look too closely, to never see a child in distress, because if he ever lets on that he doesn’t have his shit together, it’s possible that one of the leaf’s less negligent grown-ups will swoop down on him and start trying to intervene/“parent” him, which to sasuke’s mind just means “get in the way.”
sasuke, who has long felt like he’s already an adult dealing with adult problems, won’t tolerate that.  so he masks his issues, to the point where he has virtually everyone around him completely deceived.  his regular schoolteachers don’t worry about him - he’s a high achiever, he gets perfect grades, he’s top of his class in everything, he doesn’t make trouble.  his classmates don’t worry about him - they buy the ‘i’m so cool, nothing fazes me’ act and worship at his feet, even as he demonstrates that he wants nothing to do with them.  the rest of the leaf village doesn’t worry about him, either - they see him as a source of village pride (and a source of entertainment/drama, like when they’re all so excited to watch The Last Uchiha fight for their nation during the chunin exams).  even though sasuke is so messed up on the inside, the exterior facade he presents to people is specifically designed to prevent any wondering about how he’s doing.  as far as the world can see, he’s doing Just Fine (and while everyone is busy not wondering about his health, he can get down to the business of getting his revenge).
sasuke’s strategy for relating to other people is, essentially, the opposite of naruto’s approach.  naruto, in his early childhood, draws as much attention to himself as possible, causing all sorts of mayhem, in the hope that someone, somewhere will see him.  he makes trouble and causes problems precisely because he desperately wants someone to acknowledge his pain, and that’s how he ends up landing iruka as an adult support figure, because iruka notices what’s happening and decides to get involved.  sasuke, in contrast to naruto, doesn’t want anyone to acknowledge or even notice his pain, because if they do notice it, they might try to stop him from pursuing what he thinks is the only way to alleviate it.  that’s not an acceptable outcome for him, so instead of making a scene and calling attention to himself, he hides in plain sight.
sasuke doesn’t want people to get involved in his life.  he wants to be left to his own devices.  he doesn’t think he needs (read: deserves) anybody’s help, and some tiny part of him knows that a Responsible Adult might raise their eyebrows at what he’s doing to himself, so he uses his “high-achiever, too cool for school” persona to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes.  and he almost succeeds - until kakashi enters the picture.  kakashi, who can’t be fooled.  kakashi, who has known from Day One, Minute One exactly what goal is driving all of sasuke’s high achievement, and who knows that sasuke is NOT okay, in either the head or the heart.  kakashi, who in the above gifset can tell that sasuke is having a crisis without even turning around.  kakashi doesn’t need to be shown evidence before he gets concerned.  he’s known from the very start that sasuke is struggling, because he lived through similar pains and tried to cope with them in similarly unhealthy ways (remember: “useless things like emotions only get in the way”/“having too many ties in this world will only lead you astray” + “everyone you’re talking about has already been killed”/“they’re all dead...because i wasn’t strong enough to save them”).
sasuke still tries to put up the front.  a few scenes prior to the above gifset, sasuke is the one who is making fun of naruto for freezing up - you’re not hurt, are you...scaredy-cat.  and he completely fools his peers with his attitude - sakura’s got stars in her eyes, naruto’s super jealous; both of them think sasuke’s So Cool and Super Powerful and Not Afraid of Anything!
but when sasuke himself is confronted with a serious, imminent threat to his life (one against which his supposedly “advanced” skills are useless, one from which he can’t protect himself; aka, one where he’s suddenly reminded that he’s actually a twelve year-old genin and his safety is out of his control, just like it was the night his family was murdered), he’s the one who panics.  the other kids are scared, too - but sasuke completely loses it.  he almost kills himself to get away from the intensity of his fear.  *cough* it’s the ptsd *cough* but anyway -
kakashi is able to sense this without even turning around.  he’s preparing to fight an aggressor under the least ideal circumstances possible - they were supposed to be on a mission where it was four people protecting one man, but because tazuna lied to them, they’re now in a situation where it’s one man protecting four people, including three children - and even with all of that competing for his attention, kakashi is still focusing closely enough on each individual kid to sense that sasuke is going off the rails.  without even turning around, he knows.
we all remember this, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it doesn’t matter how much of an act sasuke puts on.  kakashi has been there.  he knows better.  he can’t be fooled.  he calls for sasuke by name and pulls him back from the brink.
kakashi interrupts this crisis so effectively.  not only is he able to snap sasuke out of his panic, but he’s also careful to then extend his reassurance to everyone present, accomplishing the dual purposes of calming everyone else down and also redirecting attention away from sasuke’s more extreme reaction, which the others haven’t noticed yet.  it’s deftly done.  it addresses sasuke’s crisis on an individual level without putting him in the spotlight.  it works.  the way sasuke relaxes in that last gif...man.
calm down.  i’ll protect you with my life.
i’ve already talked a little bit about how much it would mean for somebody with sasuke’s particular history to hear that (especially when those words are spoken by an adult who follows through on the promise every single time), but here i just want to focus on the fact that the only reason sasuke is lucky enough to receive this reassurance in the first place is because kakashi isn’t fooled by sasuke pretending he doesn’t need to hear it.  kakashi and the kids are very new to each other at this point, but even so, kakashi still understands sasuke better than any other adult in the hidden leaf.  he’s the first authority figure who sasuke hasn’t been able to trick into obliviousness - sasuke can’t pretend away his problems in front of someone who used to have all those same problems himself!  kakashi is too savvy to be waved away with the whole ‘i’m super advanced for my age i don’t need any help don’t look behind my mask’ charade.  kakashi invented that game.  he knows it’s one you don’t want to win.  he won it himself, when he played it, and winning just meant that everybody took him at his word when he acted like he was fine and nobody ever gave him the kind of help he needed.  he’s not going to let another kid get away with the same self-destructive shenanigans, not when he’s around to call their bluffs and be the kind of support structure he himself could’ve benefited from when he was younger.

Could I have headcanons for Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke sharing a darling?
This was actually part of a post I made a while ago. It was about sharing a darling pairs in which I was personally interested. Also, since I did already a Sakura and Naruto post and a modern reader post, I tried to summon the backstory shorter up and layed my focus on the dynamic of the relationship.
Tw: Yandere themes, possessiveness, obsessiveness, delusions, unhealthy relationship, unhealthy mindset, vicious behavior, harsh behavior, killing, manipulating, kidnapping
Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura sharing a darling
Tumblr media
🍜💙🌸I can see you as a fellow classmate back in the academy days with Naruto having already a huge crush on you back then and going on small little dates with you. When the teams were made, he was definitely upset that he wasn’t part of your team, jealous of the classmates who were. With Sakura you developed a good friendship during these days since Naruto brought you over as often as possible since he wanted to introduce you to his new friends. She was just thankful that Naruto had someone, he could always count on. Sasuke was most likely annoyed by you at first because that blonde over there never stopped talking about you. I feel like that if you would excel in a special area, ninjutsu for example or would be a good strategist, he might be impressed. But he would definitely need to spend a lot of time with you. You might have helped him with new techniques for which he acknowledged you.
🍜💙🌸You could say that this was somewhat the start of it all, Naruto and Sasuke both being in love with you. It made the relationship a bit more complicated to say the least, both often arguing when it came to you. A lot of snarky and mean comments from Sasuke, poking fun at Naruto and saying he wouldn’t be strong enough and Naruto throwing childish tantrums. Sakura, knowing that both of them liked you, was of course saddened due to her crush on Sasuke back then. But she also knew that you couldn’t do anything about it and felt almost sorry for you, these two were much to take after all.
🍜💙🌸It came to the final showdown between Sasuke and Naruto after he had decided to leave the village, wanting to get stronger and feeling hatred for Naruto because that guy had gotten so strong and monopolized your time. It led to a much more intense fight between those two, Sasuke more aggressive because of all the anger inside of him which led him to yelling at Naruto that one day he would get you and then you would be his. Naruto on the other hand got terrified when hearing this, not willing to let you anywhere near Orochimaru and Sasuke, who was clearly not thinking, which also led him to pushing harder.
🍜💙🌸He was scared when he had to leave you alone, but also knew that this was a necessary step to get stronger. He made Tsunade, Sakura, Kakashi and everyone of his friends promise that they would protect you. He knew Sasuke was lurking somewhere outside there, waiting for his chance.
🍜💙🌸It was during this time that Sakura fell for you, spending everyday with you that at one point Tsunade just decided to train both of you together since you were always there. She just realized that you had been there for her all the time, always supported her and acted as the shoulder to cry on when she had needed one. She felt conflicted about this, knowing that Naruto and you were an unofficial couple which led her to some mood swings. She was either on cloud nine or somewhere deep underground.
🍜💙🌸When Naruto came back, she informed him about what had happened. He was at first a bit more iffy about how to feel, but him and Sakura shared a great trust after all, leading to both of them agreeing to share whilst also wanting to safe their teammate. Sasuke on the other hand had spent years training with Orochimaru and that guy had somehow found out about his pupil’s little obsession with you, daring to sometimes ask him about you which led to Sasuke aggressively reacting. Even the thought of Orochimaru anywhere near you was disgusting.
🍜💙🌸After he went rogue, he had originally planned to take you after defeating Itachi. You could have been in the search troupe together with Naruto, Sakura and all the others. Tsunade and Kakashi were aware that Sasuke was after you, so they most likely either made you pair up with Naruto or Sakura at that time. If Sasuke found out or not depends on whether he sensed you or not. If he did, there’s a chance he really went after you, only to be interrupted by all the other people searching for him which was quite frustrating. You were so close and he still couldn’t grab you.
🍜💙🌸He didn’t know about Sakura yet, Tobi probably told him about it, using it as a manipulation to make him distrust the village even more and bring him to joining the Akatsuki. And that made Sasuke snap. As if it wouldn’t have been enough that this blonde moron had fallen for you, Sakura too?! Was that guy kidding him! And when he found out that those two were even sharing, he honestly was irritated. The concept of sharing the person you love wasn’t exactly well known to him.
🍜💙🌸It was most likely after the war that those three finally came to the terms of sharing with each other. Of course Sasuke needed a lot of time to get convinced. It was most likely Sakura and maybe even the darling who suggested it. Naruto wasn’t exactly all that happy with it. He was a jealous boy after all and he knew that Sasuke wasn’t exactly...the nicest person. He was dubious about this whole thing and the only reason why he was willing to give it a shot in the first place was because Sasuke was his friend. And as a worshipper he refused to let you get yelled at. And Sasuke was conflicted about this. Sharing really isn’t his strength and whilst he did saw them as his teammates again, he was still pretty selfish about you. He shouldn’t have to share you with someone else. But he knew too well that Sakura and Naruto wouldn’t let you go. Neither would he. He needed most likely help and comfort from the darling during this time so he would come to the terms of sharing.
🍜💙🌸It is truly a thing to witness in here. Because whilst Sakura and Naruto worked together so well because they share a lot of Yandere types and has the same point of view about how to treat and share you, not to mention the same trust, Sasuke isn’t like those two. He’s more of a bastard who can lash out easily when the wrong buttons are pushed and also yell at his darling for it.
🍜💙🌸It’s also worth mentioning that whilst Naruto and Sakura do see Sasuke as their friend and teammate and trust him, they always hoped for him to come back, when it comes to their darling, both of them are a bit more distrusting and more on edge. They know Sasuke’s mood swings and whilst he definitely is a bit more nicer to you, he can just as well spit out some hurtful words. And that’s definitely anything, but fine with Naruto and Sakura.
🍜💙🌸The dynamic between Naruto and Sasuke could be described as shaky. They are literally back to how they used to act to each other when they were younger. That means Sasuke mocking his friend whilst Naruto throws childish tantrums. But both of them changed after all so it can go from just acting like children and teasing and yelling at each other quickly to actually throwing hands over you. And in this case Sakura and the s/o will have to step in so they don’t try to kill each other again. And whilst Sakura definitely always tries to solve this peacefully, the moment she loses her temper too or notices that both of them scare you with their behavior, she definitely isn’t above punching them and yelling at them to stop their stupid behavior since they scare you with it.
🍜💙🌸The dynamic between Sakura and Sasuke might be a bit more awkward given the fact that Sakura used to have a crush on Sasuke and he knows that too. But at least those two are a bit more polite with each other, most likely because most of the times she knows not to push his buttons and tries in general to always talk with them if they have a problem with each other. If we go from cannon logic and assume that both of them should still develop romantic feelings for each other later on, this would of course change a few things. Sasuke would just have an easier time sharing with someone if he loved that person as well. It would still be pretty turbulent though.
🍜💙🌸Time has to be developed carefully because once again, the dynamic with Sakura and Naruto might be great, but Sasuke doesn’t add up to it. Sakura and Naruto are used to sharing their darling and definitely spend a lot of time with them together. Whilst Naruto does need a bit more time alone with their darling than Sakura does, they managed to schedule the time. But with Sasuke in the picture things changed quite a bit. Sasuke is more of a loner and since he’s possessive, he needs a lot more time with his darling in comparison to many others. Another thing is that he needs the calmness and Naruto and Sakura tend to be a bit too loud for his taste. Not only that, but all three of them together with their darling can lead to a quick argument between Naruto and Sasuke and that’s when it really gets noisy.
🍜Naruto would grow most likely more clingy due to constantly being teased and poked fun at by Sasuke. From the three he is definitely the one who would smother you more than Sasuke. He isn’t exactly happy with having to share with the black-haired boy since Sasuke goes sometimes a bit too harsh on you. There is also this old competition from his younger days between him and Sasuke which still influences the way those two act with each other. He’s also a bit more protective over you than he usually would be, not wanting you to endure any of Sasuke’s mood swings alone. If he should find out that you always get scared when him and Sasuke are in another shouting session which is about to reach it’s climax, he would feel totally horrible afterwards, apologizing whilst suffocating you in even more affection. He would try afterwards to prevent himself from getting angered too much by Sasuke for your sake which isn’t very easy.
💙Sasuke is somewhat the more unpleasant counterpart of Sakura and Naruto. He isn’t the nicest person and he knows that too. He tends to often get all pent-up due to constantly throwing fits with Naruto. It makes him a bit more trigger-happy and so it definitely happens once in a while that he has to let his frustrations out, sometimes even on you. He does feel bad afterwards since he understands that this isn’t completely your fault. It’s just hard for him to endure Sakura and Naruto, who are very overbearing to say the least. He needs time alone with you to connect properly and that is hard with the other two constantly around. He isn’t exactly all that willing to make things up with Naruto since he possesses a huge amount of Uchiha pride. Sakura would honestly have to drag him by the collar to apologize to you and to make both of them apologize to each other.
🌸Sakura is the voice of reasoning between those two. She’s honestly the only reason they didn’t lose their other arm as well. She’s more reasonable with everything and acts somewhat as a messenger between those two since their pride often keeps them from talking to each other like a grownup does. She often talks with both of them as polite as she can, figures out the problems and talks to the other one, listening to his problems and trying to make him help to understand the point of view from the other guy a bit better. She’ll also there to comfort you when you had to witness yet another fight between those two. Whilst she is someone who tries to solve things in a non-violent way, she tends to lose her temper too, grabbing both of them by their collars and shaking them whilst shouting at them to stop acting like complete idiots. Does anyone of those want to make you feel scared of them? Good grief.
🍜💙🌸This will never be a picture-perfect relationship, not with Sasuke in here. It will get overtime better though since Naruto and Sasuke will somewhat learn to co-exist next to each other and share with each other which will have you and Sakura let a sigh of relief out. The only thing they have to work on now is somehow helping Naruto and Sasuke to not get a bit too messy. Sakura is due to being a medic not that willing to kill unless something serious happened. Naruto possesses a few boundaries, but it is still too easy to set him off. And Sasuke definitely earns the first place. He’s paranoid, even more since he has to share his darling already and doesn’t want any other trailing after them.
🍜💙🌸It also makes him want to isolate his darling a bit more which is not okay with the other two. Sasuke isn’t really comfortable with with going outside with his darling, he is more on edge, especially when in public. He doesn’t have anything against a short walk outside in nature, but when he has to go under humans he tends to keep his darling closer to him. This isn’t that terrible of a case with Naruto and Sakura. They are just on the jealous side, but not that paranoid like Sasuke is. In short, there will always be things that will require long discussions and fights until for the time being a solution is found.

Two weeks after Naruto leaves with Jiraiya, once he’s sure the kid isn’t going to spontaneously pop back into the village, Kakashi asks Iruka out. He’s not expecting much—hell, he’s not even expecting a yes. But he gets the yes; and then he gets so much more.
Nothing sexual at first, though. Iruka is firm that he wants to get to know Kakashi before they sleep together. Kakashi is strangely okay with this; he’s never really dated anyone before, not anyone that wasn’t part of a mission and that… he knows that doesn’t count.
And anyone who served in ANBU under Sandaime knows about Iruka’s old situation with the traitor Mizuki. Though, Kakashi can be honest in that yes he knows there was a situation of which the Sandaime was aware and had ANBU posted outside of Iruka’s home the nights Mizuki stayed over. But the wards on the home were always solid in a way that, while the secondary symptoms were there, ANBU never actually saw or heard anything happen. And because Iruka himself never came to Sandaime to report Mizuki…
Kakashi was never on those squads. He was always more useful to the village as an assassin.
That said.
Here he is, two months after asking Iruka out, laid out in bed with him. Iruka is comfortable now, resting his head on Kakashi’s shoulder and curled up along his side. He’s been asleep for—Kakashi checks the clock on the nightstand—an hour and a half. Fuck, he’s beautiful, his hair plaited to the side and his shirt bunched at the neck. His face is lax, finally.
He hadn’t been, two hours ago.
If Kakashi ever gets the chance to kill Mizuki, he’ll do it. No hesitation.
~
It goes like this.
~
It’s getting late and Kakashi doesn’t want to go home. He’s sitting at Iruka’s kitchen table, watching him clean up from the day and making tea. They’re still talking, laughing, and it’s been two months since this thing started and Kakashi never wants it to go any further. It’s just so comfortable. Occasionally, Iruka will pass him at the table—to put something away, to stand beside him while he tells a joke, to put a fresh snack in front of Kakashi—and Kakashi can’t help himself, right? Every time, without fail, he pulls Iruka in by the hand, or the hips, or the elbow, and he knows Iruka could refuse if he didn’t want it but every time he steps into Kakashi’s space and—and—
Well, so it’s late, and Kakashi doesn’t want to go home. There’s an empty plate on the table and two empty cups beside it. But Kakashi has Iruka in his lap and his arms full of a moaning man and Kakashi doesn’t want to go home and it’s been two months since he asked Iruka out but he’s been looking respectfully for almost a year and he doesn’t want to go home.
“Let me take you to bed,” he murmurs against Iruka’s lips.
Iruka pulls back, his lips kiss-bruised and bitten and his breath coming in harsh pants. He nods, stands up, and takes Kakashi’s hands smiling.
They stop in the hallway, Iruka’s bedroom door meters away. Iruka presses him back to the wall and gropes him, kisses his neck, moans as Kakashi touches him back. He tips his head back against the wall and reaches for Iruka’s pants, but pauses because, “Oh, keep doing that,” he groans; Iruka’s found the soft skin behind his ear and he’s a puddle in his hands.
Iruka nips him and he thrusts his hips into Iruka’s, getting a slow grind in return.
“Kakashi,” Iruka grins, he can feel teeth against his neck and gods he’s weak. “Gods, you’re so fun to touch.”
He takes Iruka’s hips in hand and lets Iruka nip and kiss and suck at his neck and behind his ear and along his jaw and fuck fuck fuck—
“You keep this up, we’re not making it to bed,” he warns.
Iruka laughs. He says. “I think I can get a second round out of you.”
He slips his hand into Kakashi’s pants and Kakashi’s gone.
~
And then.
And then, Kakashi finally gets Iruka into bed and they lay side-by-side kissing and touching and stripping each other of clothing as it gets in their way. Kakashi’s down to just his trousers—Iruka is soon to be out of his own.
Kakashi reaches and grabs a handful of Iruka’s ass and groans into their kiss, pulling Iruka’s hip up and over his own so he can better feel the planes of muscle under his palm. “How the fuck,” he mutters, “do you manage to fit this in your uniform pants every day?”
Iruka laughs. “Stay the night and you’ll get to see in the morning.”
He slips his hand down the back of Iruka’s pants and swallows the moan he gets. “Can I take your trousers off?” he asks.
“Please,” Iruka groans.
He rolls Iruka onto his back and settles between his thighs. It takes some finangling, but they get Iruka’s trousers off and Kakashi dives between his legs, kissing and licking at the waistband of his boxers and stroking his inner thighs. He ducks down and nuzzles Iruka’s erection, tenting the last bit of fabric keeping them apart, and breathes him in.
It’s his turn to beg, “Please, please, let me take these off too,” he mutters.
Iruka’s hand is in his hair, resting on the back of his head. His other one cups his jaw and gently pulls him up. Kakashi kisses his way back up Iruka’s body, following the silent cue, until he gets back to Iruka’s mouth and he prepares himself to devour this man but—
But Iruka is still.
And Iruka is not breathing well.
And Iruka’s eyelashes have tears stuck on them.
“What do you need?” he asks, holding his body away from Iruka’s.
He takes a shaky breath. In a small voice, he asks, “Can you. Um. Could you grab my shirt?”
Kakashi reaches over the side of the bed and grabs the first shirt-like object he sees. He hands it to Iruka and then shuffles back on his knees enough that Iruka can comfortably duck into it without having to worry about touching him unnecessarily.
After, he lays back on the pillow and turns his head away, and closes his eyes. The tears fall silently. His shoulders don’t even hitch.
“Iruka, do you want me to go, or to stay?”
The same small voice comes after a few second’s hesitation. “If you… would you mind staying?”
Kakashi doesn’t sigh in relief; it’s a near thing, though. “I wouldn’t have offered if I minded.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be,” Kakashi rolls to the side and plays with Iruka’s hair. He has such beautiful hair. “We’re shinobi. We all have our traumas.”
Iruka hums quietly, and then curls into him. He can’t help but to put his arm around Iruka’s waist and pull him in closer. “Is this okay?”
“Yes,” Iruka says. “Thank you. Would you—gods, this is embarrassing.”
Kakashi thinks he knows what Iruka wants but isn’t too sure, and in an attempt to save the man some embarrassment, asks, “I’d like to hold you tonight, if you’re okay with that?”
He looks up, eyes brimming with relief and—dare he say it, love. “That sounds wonderful. Please.”
“Do you want me to dress, first?”
Iruka shakes his head. “I like feeling you close,” he admits quietly. His face flushes a fetching, deep red. “Unless you want to!”
Kakashi chuckles and pulls Iruka close. “Just sleep, dearest. I’ll be here in the morning when you wake up, and then you can show me just how you fit your ass in your trousers.”
Iruka laughs out loud, and then snuggles in and closes his eyes. Before he falls fully asleep, he says again, “Thank you.”
And he shouldn’t be thanked for being a decent person, but Iruka hasn’t had a lot of experience with decent people and so Kakashi holds him tight and fantasizes just how he’d make Mizuki pay if he ever gets the chance.

ROOT Reformed
Okay so you know how Yamato, Sai, and Shin were in ROOT? Well, what if Yamato had seen the two children, one so sick he was throwing up blood and the other so antisocial he kept getting bullied because of how he talked, and adopted them? The Dad!Yamato, and Child!Shin and Sai headcanons that nobody asked for coming right up :)
When Yamato first met Shin and Sai, Sai was hiding behind Shin because he accidentally insulted someone and got punched. Shin was trying to comfort the small boy and protect him.
Yamato then decided to adopt them both, he scared away the bullies and helped Sai cover his black eye, which looked worse than it was since Sai’s skin is so pale and markable.
When Yamato learned that Danzo was sending the two small children on B-Rank missions as PAWNS and they just barely survive all their missions, he personally whooped Danzo’s ass
Yamato was put in charge of Shin and Sai and the two children warmed up to him quickly
Yamato chasing Shin around the room trying to get him to eat vegetables
Yamato having to force veggies down two screeching kids throats
Shin and Sai doing target practice and Yamato tallying up the scores
Yamato training Sai and Shin on their jutsu
Yamato helping Shin reach his full potential with his ice powers
Yamato finding out how to make pieces of paper so Sai could draw all he wants
They have a huge garden in their backyard that they take care of.
Yamato growing different types of plants with his wood style jutsu and Shin and Sai reading books on how to take care of them
On Christmas, Yamato sneaked Shin and Sai out of Root so they could go to an actual party
Yamato introducing Shin and Sai to Kakashi
When Shin and Naruto first met, it was chaos at first sight
Sai following Yamato like a lost puppy and holding on to his pant leg until Yamato picks him up and put him on his shoulders
Yamato, Sai, and Shin cuddling by the fire like the smol beans they are
When Shin got really sick from his unnamed diease, they immediately went to see Tsunade, even though it took a week to track down the gambling lady
Tsunade getting full access to Root’s medical supplies so she can make sure Shin is okay
Shin surviving and being cured of his illness, NOT DYING BECAUSE HELL NO YAMATO WASN’T ABOUT TO HAVE HIS CHILD DIE, NOT TODAY SATAN
Sai and Shin keeping their memories and growing up with an actual parental influence
Yamato chasing a cackling child with a huge butchers knife around the house, both of them are yelling
Sai being the sassiest little shit in the world and everybody thinks he doesn’t know what he’s doing but Yamato’s just like “You sneaky lil’ shit-”
When Sai got to join Team Seven with Yamato, they brought Shin along as an ANBU “for the mission” when really, they didn’t want to leave him behind and come back to find the house destroyed
Yamato trying desperately to find where the hell Shin is getting all this cup ramen from and Sai is just not telling Yamato because he’s a lil’ shit
Shin third-wheeling with Kiba on all of Ino and Sai’s dates (Kiba third-wheels on everbody’s dates, its a fact)
KIBA x SHIN, KIBA x SHIN, KIBA x SHIN (I’m sorry I just need my dog boy-o to love somebody okay??)
Shin just randomly came home one day holding Kiba’s hand and Yamato immediately adopted him
IRUKA AND KAKASHI SHOW UP AND BAM (Yes, this is KakaYamaIru. Shhh-)
Naruto and Kiba calling each other “Brother” bc their father-figures are dating
Sai and Ino being quieter about their relationship than Shin and Kiba but they’re literally so damn cute oh my lord
Shin and Kiba going on dates that are mostly composed of running around the woods and chasing rabbits but they love it anyway
Yamato being a Proud Dad™
When Danzo died and the family got their curse marks removed and became real Leaf Village citizens they were overjoyed
Suddenly, the Leaf Village had about 100 more extremely talented teenage shinobi at their service
Yamato re-opening Root but this time, making it into a friendly place where everybody is supportive of one another

my pants no longer have coffee on them
nodus tollens!
Over time Sasuke learnt to tell by the smell. Ore meant a blood mutation. Licorice meant bone. Sweet ammonia meant parasites growing fat inside their hosts.
sasuke’s memories of orochimaru are very sensory. i wrote him as a sensory person. i think the whole uchiha ‘hearts too strong to break easy, and that’s a warning’ thing would make them worse at managing their basic five experiences.
Fuyuki shakes her head like a parent would, like Sasuke’s disgust is childish. “It’s an opportunity,” she says neutrally, “we have to make the most of them.” We don’t have the same means and opportunities as others, the silence says, we have to build from ruins and carnage. This is the right reason, boy. Even when it disgusts you. As if that makes doing something they’d kill someone else for doing right. Sasuke looks, and thinks, and looks again, and although he can understand it he can’t justify it.
oh man. at this point fuyuki pretty much knows she’s lost him. she is in fact saying shit to make him leave so she doesn’t have to make him while trying to jam common sense into his brain one last time. who knows if it takes.
“What?” He feels it. Warm, wary, growing distant. Before Yumi was ’kunoichi, dangerous, fun loving’ she now has a little box in his internal checklist that says ‘caution: complicit and unrepentant’.
yeah. this is the thought. oof. dude just wants to trust his friends.
She pats him lightly on the cheek, stepping back to give him some space. “You have my full and free permission to leave at any time. No member of Giri is forced to hold to an allegiance they feel no longer reflects their ideals.” With a wry smile she shakes her head reaching down to pull something from her pouch. “You always had an out.”
He watches her hand. “What’s that?”
“For services rendered.” With a deliberate showiness she flips the object in her hand -a scroll- and holds it out to him. He blinks at her, taking the scroll from her outstretched hand. It’s thin and blue tipped, the personal seal of the Godaime Hokage glows in the night. The future in his hand.
AGAIN. SHE ALWAYS WANTED YOU TO LEAVE. THE POINT IS THAT YOU CAN LEAVE THE CYCLE nvrmind he’s not gonna get it for another 60,000 words.
Sasuke says nothing. The pardon is cold in his hands, shame rolling through his gut. Truth be told he never actually thought he’d get it. Truth be told he’d forgotten about it. There’s never an out, there’s never something given without something taken away. She was honest. She did say what she was going to do. She never offered a single promise. Betrayal is a reflexive emotion for him, though, and he still feels it like a punch. Leaving is a choice. One he has made more often than any other. Being let go of is something he isn’t used to.
woof. a long 60,000 words. still love that last line. fucks most verily.
Giri have flying ships.
never used this. very mad about it.
If extremely pressed Sasuke will admit that he picked Team Hebi based on a wild mix of comfort, usefulness and poorly placed boundaries. Orochimaru collected a bunch of weird traits and weirder expressions of trauma in the kids he lured to Oto; Suigetsu, Karin and Juugo are some of the best examples. Perfectly capable of respecting his needs and following his orders, completely incapable of acting like competent human beings the rest of the time.
oh thank god they’re weird. sasuke actually needs at least three to nine people around him at all times and has never not once thought about how developing his chakra sense in a compound full of other people might effect this. not even once.
Sasuke rolls his eyes, crosses his arms and clearly announces, “We won’t work together again after this.”
Karin and Suigetsu stop squabbling to turn to look at him.
Sasuke shrugs, “I’m going back to Konoha, Suigetsu is going to Kiri, Juugo will stay with Giri and Karin will go to Uzu.”
Karin sniffs delicately. “Back to Konoha?”
karin begins to plan konoha’s downfall. i envision karin as someone with a rather unique personal perspective. she is sasuke focused but its because she literally just thinks differently. i had a little bit for her that was about how uzumaki seals are literally a kind of meta-magic and thats why mito changed the game so much. to be able to use them effectively you have to be able to look at the world strangely. anyway. konoha will never recover from this.
In Oto there were war orphans, normal orphans, freed slaves, second or third generation missing-nin, the odds and ends of clans that had died off, those who had seen their entire families exterminated and those who did the exterminating. In Oto there was no safe dinner conversation.
Except, of course, for the food.
fucks. it fucks.
Juugo chuckles and waves him off. Sasuke is dead certain they’ll meet again. Maybe he’ll find them himself in a few years. He takes one last look behind him, sharingan on, and then leaves quickly and quietly. It’s not a bad snapshot to have. Karin has resorted to using her chains to manage Suigetsu, who is either helping the fire or taking the longest possible route to putting it out, Juugo is calling the small woodland animals and pets out of their homes. There’s an enterprising rabbit on his head. Suigetsu has one sword and Karin has the other. They’re all smiling.
favourite bit of favourite chapter. does not fuck. does gently cuddle and give glowing aftercare.
Walking is in itself a refreshing experience. For the first time in his life there’s nothing to rush to. It’s a free sky: so high, so blue. So filled with things that he’s never seen before. He flicks his sharingan on and off. At sunset the sky fills with the lush pink and orange of change. At night the stars are so bright it feels like he’s counting the freckles on some great dragon’s back. At dawn he lies in the grass and lets the light wake him. He takes a long path winding his way down and around to his birthplace. He has one goal left, one last thing to do before it’s all done and he never thought he’d get this far. There is so little between him and the freedom to finally, finally put this all to rest.
So for the first time he lets himself linger.
The stars lead him into the mouth of a valley, green and bright with flowers. He doesn’t put people to places very often. People are memories. He sees them clearly enough. But he’ll cast a look onto the calm water and think Juugo, onto the high point of a knife and think Yumi, onto the twisting branches of an out of place blooming flower and think Sakura. In darker moments he names the other things. A tree changing out of season, riddled with the beautiful but deadly rings of a strangling vine earns Orochimaru. Just as a black expanse that appears in the middle of night is called father. Just as the ephemeral falling of flowers, the scent, is mother.
The clear sky is called Naruto. The fading mist of dawn is called Brother.
sometimes you’ve just gotta let the prose happen. and then make it sad at the end. i wrote paragraphs about naruto and itachi here and deleted it because haha sasuke WILL NOT THINK ABOUT IT like hes not really thinking about his suicidal ideation. i did recieve more than one comment that was like ‘......wait he wants to kill himself?’ haha! yeah! body made for one thing! he has yet to decide a man is allowed to have multiple life purposes.
“Please,” the woman begs, “please, my child. Take her. Please.”
this is not JUST about how much sasuke would like to save children its just MOSTLY about sasuke being the only one around to do it, and hinata. eventually.
“Sasuke.” Kakashi says.
“Sensei.” Sasuke says automatically. “Hatake. Hatake Kak-”
kakashi, heart in his throat, thinking today is the day he has to kill his sort of son and lose the rest in the grieving: sasuke
sasuke, holding a baby: AHHHHHHHHHHH
Sasuke scowls and shakes his head, looking down at the bundle in his arms. “This is a goddamn baby Hatake.” Then, softer, “It’s a baby. I have to take it somewhere safe.”
kakashi, soothed by the pardon, worried about all of that: sasuke
sasuke, holding a baby he is EMOTIONAL about: AHHHHHHHHHHH
Fuyuki is still radiating smugness as she lets them out. She plucks the baby from his arms, tucking it into hers. Sasuke almost groans, Kakashi is approaching a sulk at break neck speed. As he crosses the threshold of her home Fuyuki grabs him by the end of his hair and yanks, “Oh, Uchiha?”
Sasuke scowls as he pulls out of her hold. “Fucking what Hashira?”
She smiles, baby stuffing the length of her hair in it’s mouth. Sasuke looks at them both and feels an odd sense of accomplishment. Fuyuki mimes a scissoring action. “Cut your hair.”
i’m not going to do the first chapter but this. absolutely. slams. sasuke’s hair is so important but the hair thing was a specific thing about honor and service. about the redemption that a lot of missing nin feel in giri, the longer their hair the more they’ve done to repent. even if sasuke never quite gets it he actually doesn’t cut his hair until after this.and its not by much.

Why can't I hold all these cool stories?
CURRENT CRAVINGS: Please see this GDoc, because I have some plots I’d like to try! I’m primarily interested in original plots and characters; setting them in original worlds or fandom worlds is fine. I am not interested in playing canons other than as side characters/world filler as of right now.
DISCORD: KYLO REN AT CHILI’S#8808
TIMEZONE: CST
PERSONAL PREFERENCES
I’m over eighteen, and would prefer my partners are, too. This doesn’t mean I’m interested in NSFW-heavy plots; I do not write smut. It just means I’m more comfortable writing and interacting with other adults.
I consider myself to be lit-adv. I tend to enjoy partners in the lit+ category, but as long as you’re an enthusiastic and engaging partner, I don’t care about perfect grammar. I would rather write with someone just as involved and excited as I am, than I would with someone who isn’t very engaging but knows exactly what to do with obscure punctuation.
I’m not interested in playing only one type of character or playing against only one type of character. I typically don’t enjoy writing with people who are only interested in playing one type of relationship dynamic or one kind of character (such as only m/f, playing the female, or m/m, playing the “bottom”). I have no problem with these dynamics or characters at all, nor do I have an issue playing against them. I just prefer more variety, compromise, and opportunity.
OOC chatter is really important to me. I can’t write with someone that I don’t feel like I can get to know. I’m looking for friends, not a faceless reply robot. I won’t communicate over any medium but Discord. I’ve tried Kik, Hangouts, etc.; they just don’t stick for me. If you would prefer first contact be through email, you can shoot me a quick message and your handle to [email protected].
I’m fine with threading in a GDoc or a server, but I will not thread over DMs. It’s difficult to have OOC chatter and the thread over the top of each other.
If you’re looking for a partner that writes a reply a day without fail, that’s not me. I prefer that we don’t have “posting schedules” or set posting times, because I find that it turns writing into a chore. It’s great if you reply immediately, and it’s totally okay if you need a week to figure something out! You’re absolutely free to poke me. I’m not always the most mindful. However, I’m not going to reply every day. Three to four times a week is my frequency.
PLOT PREFERENCES
I’m interested in both fandom and original settings, and I’m down for playing both canon characters and OCs. I don’t necessarily prefer one or the other.
I definitely prefer canon doubling from my partners in fandom plots; I mesh better with people who do a little give-and-take when it comes to that. If you only play one canon character or only play OCs against canons and won’t play canons, I don’t think we’ll work.
I can play as many characters as needed, whether it’s just one or it’s six. Whatever our story calls for, I can manage that. In fact, I would love to play multiple “main” pairings so we can both get what we want, versus a single main pairing (unless it’s a pairing/dynamic we both like equally well). I find more than one facet to a plot really interesting, and multiple characters helps flesh out a story’s dimensions.
I’m absolutely interested in joining groups, so please don’t be shy about asking me to participate in plots with more than two players. So long as they don’t involve me writing sexual NSFW, we’re Gucci; everyone else writing NSFW isn’t a deal breaker for me.
Multiple threads and plots at the same time are no issue for me. In fact, I love the idea that we click so well that we just can’t stop coming up with good ideas! So definitely don’t be afraid to pitch something new to me, whether it’s because you want to switch gears (and drop a thread for another), or want to do everything at once.
Romance is a must for me! I prefer slow and agonizing journeys to get there, but my attention is best held by romantic chemistry between characters.
I can provide writing samples upon request, though I never require them from my partner. Additionally, I have some plots written out if you’re interested in that sort of thing. Otherwise, we can brainstorm together!
FANDOMS
I’m very much a fandom player. I’m always down for AUs, or inserting our own characters into the plots of fandoms! This is in no way a complete list; never be afraid to ask if I’m into something! I’ve probably forgotten a hundred things I love.
Most of my fandoms will have favorite canon characters listed with them, both who I like playing and playing against; you’re always welcome to ask about others not listed.* There’s a good chance I’m pretty good with them!
*I will play OCs in every fandom, but I might not play canons in every fandom.
ALWAYS

GENRES
For the most part, I’ll genuinely play most any genre! Of course, everyone says that, but then they shoot down all your suggestions because everyone has stuff they don’t like doing. I’ll try to make this as brief as I can, and know that if something isn’t listed, but you’re pretty sure (based on everything else) that I’m into it, then definitely let me know what you’re thinking!
SETTINGS
A/B/O (I will not play only alphas for only omegas, nor will I play overly trope-y, non-con, “boys love”/"yaoi” plots.), Age of Sail, alien worlds/alien invasions, celebrity, fairytales and mythology (including “inspired by” retellings), fantasy (including medieval, urban, and high fantasy), alt-historical and modern royalty, mutants/gifted, organized crime, science fiction (especially including aliens), some historical (excluding medieval, colonial, and the Roaring Twenties/Great Depression), Southern gothic, supernatural, Victorian (especially the London ton), post-apocalyptic
PAIRING DYNAMICS
arranged marriage (I’m always down for slinging our characters together, whether or not they want to. It’s always a bonus if their families hate each other.), enemies to lovers (I love conflict of any sort, especially romantic!), human x not-human (The not-human must be sentient.), bad guy x good guy, intellectual x emotional, captive x captured (especially when the captured is willful, annoying, and full of fight), step-siblings (I don’t play step-parents x step-kids, so please don’t ask!), status/power imbalances (such as characters being from different socioeconomic strata or different ranks/positions in an organization), celebrity x bodyguard (I’m okay with the celebrity being the son/daughter/offspring of someone famous!), famous x not famous, rivals of any sort, unwilling traveling companions, unwilling soulmates
If any of this interests you, please feel free to reach out to me however! I’m really looking forward to hearing from you!

[ Hey @senjusaku , I’m your Secret Santa for @narutorp-secretsanta this year! I literally cannot draw so I figured I’d write you a Team 7 Christmas thingy. It’s kind of short and I wasn’t able to go back to spellcheck/grammar check it so it may or may not be shit. Regardless, Merry Christmas and I hope you like it!
Summary : Sakura informs Kakashi about a Team 7 Christmas dinner. He ends up participating in his own way.  (brief appearances from Naruto, Sasuke, and Iruka) ]
Konohagakure has somehow transformed into a winter wonderland over night. Perfect timing, considering today was Christmas Eve. The streets are far busier than usual, shinobi and civilians both trying to get last minute shopping done. Most shinobi have been given the day off for the occasion; too much doom and gloom was not good for the mind and soul, the Sandaime had claimed.
“Kakashi-sensei, I’ve been looking all over for you!” A familiar voice prompts the silver haired nin to glance down from his favorite reading spot, a branch which he’d spent a good ten minutes cleaning the snow off of. He offers a two fingered wave in greeting, faltering slightly when he catches a glimpse of what she’s wearing.
His student is wearing the ugliest Christmas sweater that he’s ever seen. Between the metallic shine of the fabric to the way that the collar lit up with lights, he isn’t sure where his eyes are supposed to land first.
By the time his eyes recover from the sight, he realizes that she has finished speaking.
“Eh? What did you say?” Kakashi asks apologetically, hand placed on the back of his head. The genin sighs, clearly annoyed, before repeating.
“I thought you were supposed to have good hearing, sensei. I said that we’re having a Team 7 Christmas party tonight at your apartment-”
“My apartment?” Kakashi raises a brow before falling silent upon seeing Sakura’s glare.
“-and we would really like it if you could come. You’re in charge of making dinner and-”
“Why me?” Kakashi dares to ask another question.
“Because you’re the adult.” Adult. Responsibility. Children. It’s almost like he’s a father and my god, was that thought horrifying. The image of three toddlers- one blonde, one dark haired, and one with bright pink hair- pops up in his mind. They’re whining and crying, which is pretty much no different than what they currently do.
“As nice as that sounds, I’m going to have to decline.” Kakashi watches as her expression drops and a ‘why??’ sprouts from her lips, “I like to spend my Christmas Eve digging up the bodies of dead comrades; spending time with friends and family during the holidays is crucial.”
He lets the thought sink in for a moment, watching as Sakura’s jaw drops in horror. He’d said he had many hobbies but she’d never thought-
“Maa, relax. In all seriousness, I have a mission that needs my expertise tonight. S-rank missions don’t stop during the holidays.” Kakashi smiles as Sakura lets out a sigh of relief, though the disappointment doesn’t leave her eyes.
“I see. Of course, missions are super important.” Still, she cannot help but feel a bit dejected. Regardless, she works to conceal it behind a smile and a wave of farewell, “Sorry to bother you, sensei. Good luck on your mission!”
After finding out that Kakashi was a no go, the trio ended up celebrating at Iruka’s place (rather, Naruto had offered up Iruka’s place). The chuunin had been surprised to see them with three bags stuffed with groceries and a stack of presents but had let them in nonetheless.
While Naruto and Sasuke competed with each other on who could find the best Christmas tree, Sakura aided Iruka in the kitchen. Needless to say, her former sensei would never have a career in cooking. Between burning pretty much anything he put on a pan to dumping large quantities of salt in everything in an attempt to ‘season’, Sakura had decided that she would be the one cooking. On the bright side, he was great at chopping vegetables.
By the time Naruto and Sasuke reluctantly agreed on a tree, dinner was ready. Presents were shared, laughs were exchanged, and overall, the night felt warm despite the frosty climate just outside the door.
“I wonder if Kakashi-sensei’s alright.” Sakura suddenly blurts out while Naruto and Sasuke argue about trivial topics. The pair fall silent as the kunoichi glances out the window. The snowfall has increased significantly over the past few hours. She can’t imagine how cold it is outside, how lonely-
“I’m sure Kakashi-san is fine. A little snow won’t do him any harm.” Iruka reassures, breaking the silence. However, the way he looks at her indicates that he knows that she isn’t talking about the snow. Determined to ease their minds and repair the dropping mood, Iruka rises from his seat, “Who wants hot chocolate?”
The clock has long since struck midnight by the time Kakashi enters his apartment. His clothes are discarded in the hallway bit by bit as he makes his way towards the bathroom. By the time he makes it into the shower, warm water rolling down his broad shoulders, all articles of clothing have been discarded and were to be picked up later.
Kakashi stands in silence, listening to his own breaths and the steady stream of running water. A sigh escapes his lips as he begins to rub himself from head to toe with soap, watching as blood swirls down the drain.
Lips part in a painful hiss as his fingers run over a poorly patched up would on his abdomen. The skin is still sore to the touch and will be for the next few weeks unless he finds time to stop by the hospital to be seen by a proper medic.
Kakashi scoffs quietly at the thought. He never has and never will see a medic for a wound that can easily be stitched up. He’d been rather spoiled in his younger days with having a medic as his teammate.
When the Hatake finally exits the shower, he’s admittedly tempted to leave his dirtied clothing on the ground and drop face first onto his bed. The more logical part of him declines- he also has plans he has to get done by tonight. Towel wrapped around his waist, he follows the trail of clothing, picking each piece of fabric up by the unsoiled bits, and eventually tossing them into his laundry bin.
Entering his room, he once again finds himself subject to the temptation of rest before he catches sight of what he laid out across his mattress just before he’d left. Ah, yes, there were more pressing matters to attend to.
Santa supposedly arrives in a slay pulled by reindeer and drifts down one’s chimney to deliver his gifts. Kakashi is not nearly as glorious in his attempts, though in his defense, Iruka’s home lacked a chimney and it would be near impossible to find flying reindeer on such short notice.
He’d been slightly surprised when Pakkun, who he’d left in charge of keeping an eye on the kids, claimed that Team 7 had forced themselves into the chuunin’s apartment. This would make things a bit harder but he supposes having them all gathered in one place cuts down on the delivery time.
“You have my sincerest apologies, sensei.” Kakashi mutters as he enters through the window (the apology is for both dumping the kids on him and breaking into his house. Well, that and removing the seals placed on one of his windows but mostly the former two). The jounin keeps silent as he begins his quest, though makes an effort to keep his chakra flowing out and about to avoid panic should Iruka wake up. Perhaps he has and just hasn’t bothered getting up to question Kakashi on why he was in his apartment in the middle of the night.
He spots the Christmas tree before he spots the genin. Rather, he almost trips over Naruto’s sleeping form. The blonde has managed to roll off his futon and currently hugs onto the pillow barrier that had been crafted between him and Sasuke. Sakura sleeps soundly on the couch.
Kakashi avoids the pieces of wrapping paper that have been scattered around the room like landmines, knowing that the slightest crinkle will stir Sasuke. Slowly but surely, he makes his way across the room and to the tree. The Hatake reaches into his makeshift gift sack, setting each gift down under the tree one by one.
Each gift has a name written on it with no indication of the sender. Perhaps Naruto will think it’s from Santa Claus - a part of him hopes so, since one’s childhood never lasted long enough in the shinobi world.
Just as Kakashi turns to leave, he catches sight of a single wrapped box on the dinner table. They say curiosity killed the cat but then again, he’s certainly no cat. The jounin wonders why this one hasn’t been opened as he picks it up, turning it over in his hands.
For Kakashi-sensei. From Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura.
The silver haired nin can only stare for a few moments, surprise flickering across his one eyed gaze. ‘For me?’, his expression asks as he looks back upon the sleeping form of his students.
He can do nothing to prevent the smile that spreads across his masked lips. Those damn brats, he thinks fondly as he makes his exit, Merry Christmas.

An ANBU Tradition
Rating: T Words: 3489 Fandom: Naruto Summary: Itachi Uchiha joins the ANBU under Kakashi Hatake's command. There's a certain tradition the ANBU has for new recruits, and Itachi is no exception.
Kakashi lay on his back, one knee bent up while the other extended. It was long past the time when he should have replaced his twin mattress with something that would actually accommodate his height. The only way he could fit was by sleeping with his knees bent; stretched out as he was, his head could either rest on his pillow or his ankle could hang off the foot of the bed. He opted for the latter. He held his newest copy of Icha Icha languidly above his exposed face, and his damp, white hair was brushed awkwardly back out of his eyes.
The laundry machine hummed in the background, keeping a steady rhythm as it spun nearly every article of clothing that the young man had to his name. The mission assigned to his ANBU squad took them weeks to complete, and his already spartan apartment was even more barren with its lack of basic necessities upon his return. Even so, the amenities that remained were a godsend for his right-hand man.
Without looking away from the pages of his book, he could see his towel-clad companion standing in front of the chest of drawers. Before he could ask, Kakashi instructed him, “Just take whatever’s there that’ll fit.”
Even if Kakashi had kept his clothing from three years ago, his broad shoulders and tall frame had always left Tenzo in his shadow. “Don’t you have anything that’s not made for a giant?” he asked snidely as he pawed through the drawers one-by-one.
“You’re the one who decided to wash everything you own,” Kakashi drawled as he turned the page. “Make do.”
Much to Tenzo’s relief, Kakashi hadn’t taken the only pair of drawstring sweatpants. The fabric bunched awkwardly at his hips as he pulled the strings to fit, tying them into a lazy knot. The legs were too long, and he had to be careful not to trip himself on the excess. As he dug for a shirt, he took his towel in one hand and began to dry his long, brown hair. He wanted to complain that he didn’t have ready access to laundry services or a private shower, but he was worried that Kakashi, out of petty spite, would bar him from using the ones in his apartment until he apologized. It wouldn’t be the first time.
The smallest shirt Tenzo found hung to the middle of his thighs, and if he held his arms out to his sides, it looked like a black bag instead of proper clothing. Unable to help himself, he frowned. “I look like a child.”
“Sixteen going on six,” Kakashi smirked as he snapped his book shut, a strange sight without his mask. He righted himself on his bed, crossing his legs in front of him.
Tenzo balled up his towel and threw it across the room, and Kakashi caught it with ease. With a toss, it landed in the empty laundry basket. Sarcasically, he began, “Thank you, Kakashi. You’re doing my laundry and let me use your shower, and you even called in some dinner. You’re the best captain ever!”
Tenzo made a lewd gesture, but there was playfulness in his eyes. “Fuck you, Senpai.”
To his surprise, Kakashi laughed. There was no way Kakashi could take him seriously dressed the way he was. Tenzo growled in indignation. He reached behind him and grabbed something from the dresser, throwing it at the white-haired man. “And put a damned shirt on, Hatake.”
Kakashi’s laughter faded into a chuckle that wouldn’t go away, even as he did as he was told. Tenzo had a feeling that Kakashi made those infuriating smirks and grins just as often on any other day, but that the expressions were hidden by his mask. He snatched the file folder of the kitchen table and walked over to Kakashi, taking a seat facing him on the mattress. He held it up and smacked his captain’s forehead with it. “We have work to do.”
Kakashi took the file and opened it. While he examined the pages, he set an elbow on his knee and bent over, his chin in the palm of his hand as he read. “Itachi Uchiha…” he mused, unclipping the child’s photograph from the file. “He’s young.”
“Not for our squad,” Tenzo corrected as he examined the score card. “He’s ten. Graduated to genin at six, like I did, and just a year after you. You joined at twelve, right? And Danzo had me in the foundation since I was five. It only looks that way because you’re old.”
“I’m nineteen.”
“Exactly.”
Kakashi took a swing at Tenzo’s head, which he narrowly dodged.  “Lord Hiruzen appointed him. Good. We need to keep him away from Danzo until Itachi can manage on his own.” He traded Itachi’s photograph for the card Tenzo held. “He’s strong. From the looks of it, he should be able to keep up rather well. We won’t know for sure until we see him in action, though.”
Tenzo looked up and over, large eyes narrowing in suspicion. “No.”
The devilish grin Kakashi gave sent a chill down his spine, a thousand times more powerful now that it could be seen. “It’s a tradition.”
“Absolutely not, Senpai. Yugao still has nightmares, and she’s fifteen. Lord Hiruzen would kill you!”
“Us.”
“What?”
“Us. You don’t think I can pull this off on my own, do you?”
Tenzo drug his palm down the side of his face. “Kakashi…”
Clearly, this approach wasn’t working. Slyly, he reached out and grabbed Tenzo’s wrist, moving it away from his face. With his best puppy-dog eyes – which he’d long since perfected – he only had to say one word. “Please?”
Using both hands to cover his reddened face, Tenzo groaned, his head falling back against the wall in agony. “God, I hate you.”
“No, you don’t,” Kakashi retorted flatly as he thumbed through the rest of the file.
The standard-issue ANBU mask covered the dark circles under Tenzo’s eyes, much to his relief. He’d been kept up far too late while Kakashi made his plan, and his captain refused to let him doze off until he understood it thoroughly. By the time he was finally allowed to sleep, he’d managed to get in about four hours before Kakashi woke him by going about his morning routine. His senpai’s late-to-bed, early-to-rise habits were excruciating, but at least Kakashi decided to sleep that night rather than staying up until dawn.
If he was lucky, this would all be over soon, and he could get some much-needed rest. He stifled a yawn, refusing to show weakness around the rest of the team. Absentmindedly, he wondered if he could put down literal roots to keep himself standing.
To his displeasure, when Kakashi informed their teammates of his plan, they had all readily agreed. Even Yugao, who had suffered just a few months ago, gave her support. Ko and Yoji delighted in the ANBU tradition, and so Tenzo’s voice of protest was lost. All the same, there was a part of him that looked forward to it just as much as the others, even though he’d never admit it. He just wished he could hide it from Kakashi’s keen perception.
When their newest comrade stepped through the door, Tenzo wondered if he’d looked just as comical in his ANBU gear when he was that age. It fit Itachi, but the sight of the small, gaunt child in black ops armor was ironic. In his hand, he held a small mask, one he had no doubt just been issued. Impressively, the Uchiha carried himself without fear, facing his seniors like equals.
Kakashi stepped forward from the front of the group, removing his patterned ANBU mask. He held it in his left hand as he placed his hands on his hips, looking down at his new charge. He watched as Itachi followed propriety and bowed, introducing himself in a yet-unbroken voice. “My name is Itachi Uchiha.”
Only when he stood back up did Kakashi speak. “I’m your new captain, Kakashi. Welcome to Team Ro.” He placed his mask back on his face as he continued. “It’s a tradition here at the ANBU for new members to go on a mission with their team on the first day. Sink or swim, if you will. If you don’t think you can keep up, leave now.”
Itachi looked his captain in the eye, emotionless, and placed his mask on his face. Beneath his own, Kakashi smiled.
“Good. Yugao, brief him.”
The single woman of the group stepped forward, a map in her hands. She spread it out on the table and drew a gloved finger across the parchment as she spoke. “We’ve been assigned to stop a squad of Suna ninja from crossing the border. They seem to be a small group of scouts, but we can’t risk letting them get any information on our territory.” She looked up from the map to catch Itachi’s eye. “The third war might be over, but we can’t let our guard down.”
“Understood.” Itachi nodded, the perfect little soldier.
“Now that we have an even number, we can operate with pairs.” Kakashi began to gesture to members of the team. “Yugao, I want you with Itachi. You’ll be our sensory unit. Ko and Yogi, you’ll be the decoy team. Tenzo’s with me for acquisition.
Ko and Yogi, I want you to forge a straight path, passing the shrine. Tenzo and I will take a wide berth and block any retreat into the sand. Yugao and Itachi, you’ll come in from the side.”
“Got it!” the team chorused.
Yugao was pleasantly surprised by Itachi’s speed. Despite his small stature, he was able to keep her pace, never faltering. So far, so good. She didn’t say as much, withholding any praise until the end of the mission. It was common for new recruits to become overconfident, and overconfident ninja made mistakes.
There was a twinge on the edge of her consciousness, most likely emanating from foreign chakra. She held her path, giving Itachi less than a second to pick it up for himself. Really, she should have expected nothing less from one of Lord Hiruzen’s hand-picked agents.
“Here.” Itachi veered to the east without breaking his stride. He didn’t know what the strange chakra signature meant, but it was too foreign to belong to something of the forest. He’d been on enough scouting practice missions with his father to know he’d found something.
Yugao turned and headed in the same direction, pleased that he’d passed her test. Maybe the kid would make it to his next birthday, after all.
The sound of metal hitting metal reverberated through the trees. Yugao picked up two familiar chakra signatures – those of Ko and Yogi – as well as a muddled, concealed trace of someone trying to hide their presence. “Shit,” she swore under her breath. With a few powerful leaps, she put herself ahead of Itachi. “Keep close!” she ordered, unable to spare a glance over her shoulder to make sure he heard.
Itachi did as he was told. At this speed, it was more difficult for him to keep up, but as they moved, he sensed the skirmish as well. His new comrades were clearly in danger. Yugao remained in his line of vision as he pushed himself to go faster. Then, in an instant, she was gone.
The only sign of her was a flash of her purple hair as she somersaulted when her body hit the ground. Itachi dropped down, ricocheting himself from branch to branch along the ancient trees, earning himself a much softer landing. When his feet hit the ground, Yugao finished cinching the cloth bandage she’d wrapped around her forearm. He could see her blood, but it didn’t appear to be serious.
“Let’s go,” she ordered, her eyes scanning their surroundings. “They know we’re here. We need to get to Ko and Yogi.”
A kunai flew out of the forest and impaled itself in a tree trunk, millimeters from Itachi’s face. He rolled to dodge the attack, which was far from the last. He caught sight of a Suna nin hiding in the trees. From his black sunglasses and cloth-covered face, he seemed to also be a member of a black ops organization. Itachi’s hands flew as he formed familiar signs and took a deep breath; from his mouth erupted a ball of fire twice the size of his body in height alone.
The Suna ninja was forced out of hiding, right into Yugao’s trap. Her blade struck against the kunai in the Suna ninja’s right hand, which he held above his face. A swift kick to the abdomen knocked Yugao off her balance.
Itachi’s eyes spun red in anticipation, willing the enemy to meet his gaze. If he could only trap him in his genjutsu, they could farm him for information in a matter of seconds. However, luck was not on his side. In his moment of distraction, the enemy formed the hand signs for the Earth Flow Divide jutsu. A little too late, Itachi fled the ground beneath his feet. His fingers clung with desperation to the ledge in front of him, willing himself not to look down at the chasm awaiting his fall.
His small hands grabbed on to the thick tree roots, now exposed from the earth along the divide. It was enough to support the weight of a full-grown man, and Itachi pulled himself out with ease.
With a sickeningly wet sound, the Suna ninja jerked his kunai down and out of Yugao’s stomach. Her hands clutched desperately at the wound, but the blood pooling at her feet was already too much. She fell face-first into the grass, and Itachi’s shout was animalistic as he charged the enemy, ready to kill.
He was knocked to the ground, where he slid across the earth for several meters before coming to a stop. To his horror, a second ninja, dressed like the first, deposited two lifeless bodies at his companion’s feet.
In a voice like sandpaper, the second ninja taunted scornfully, “And then there was one. Should we let him run home with his tail between his legs?”
The first shook his head and rushed Itachi. The screeching noise that pierced Itachi’s ears was not, as he first thought, an auditory symptom of fear. In a streak of blue light, his captain jumped down, placing himself between Itachi and his attacker. With his lightning blade, Kakashi sent an electrical current through the kunai he caught with his bare hand. Instinctively, the Suna ninja dropped his weapon.
“Go!” Kakashi barked at his subordinate, who did as he was told.
Itachi ran past Tenzo, who threw up a protective wall of earth in his wake. He kept running, as fast as he could, but he wasn’t quick enough. A third Suna operative caught him with a sharp blow to the head, and he fell before his surroundings went black.
When he awoke, Itachi was greeted by darkness. His hands were bound behind his back, and he could feel the fabric of a blindfold against his forehead and cheekbones. He picked up Kakashi’s chakra nearby. It was faint, but it was there. He found reassurance in the fact that he wasn’t alone. “Captain?” he whispered, taking a risk.
A short, sharp hiss sounded to his right, a signal to remain silent.
The first Suna ninja’s hazy chakra entered the… wherever they were, and Itachi heard the sound of skin violently hitting against skin. He heard Kakashi spit and smelled iron. In the same, coarse voice, the ninja demanded, “I’ll ask you one more time. How did you track us?”
Kakashi growled deep in his chest, “I’d rather die.”
“You will, but not yet.” The menacing chakra moved in front of Itachi. “I want you to regret coming after us. You’re going to watch me kill the last kid on your squad before I leave you for the animals.” A fist lifted Itachi off the ground by the right strap of his armor.
He had to think fast. Itachi lifted his left shoulder and drug his face across it; once was all he needed. His red eye locked on to his attacker, who immediately let him go. Itachi maintained his genjutsu hold as he righted himself. The man screamed.
It was then that Itachi allowed himself to slip inside the nightmare. The Sand ninja hung limply from a cross. A single black crow cried out and landed on Itachi’s shoulder as he approached the man, his sharingan eyes cruel and calculating. With a swift flick of his wrist, he tore away the man’s cloth mask and glasses out of a desire to see the man who killed his teammates in his suffering.
Itachi staggered back in shock, the genjutsu broken. His captor fell to his knees, gasping for air. Itachi was enraged. In a voice too big for his small body, he snarled, “What the hell is going on here, Captain?!”
“Swear like that again, and we’ll have your mother wash out your mouth.” Yugao’s voice came from behind him, and he felt a kunai cut through his bindings. As soon as he was free, Itachi snatched off his blindfold.
In front of him sat Kakashi, who had removed his Suna garb, holding his head in his hands. The Kakashi to Itachi’s right went up in a cloud of smoke, leaving Tenzo in his place. So, it was a transformation jutsu. His body was shaking in anger when Ko and Yogi joined the rest of the squad. His eyes, still blazing red, narrowed. “Explain,” he ordered, as though they saw him as a threat.
Tenzo had rushed to Kakashi’s side, one hand on his back and the other on the front of his shoulder to steady him. He scolded his captain in a low tone, and words like ‘told you,’ ‘idiot,’ and ‘your ass’ reached Itachi’s ears. Kakashi lifted his head when his body recovered from the effects of the genjutsu.
“It’s an ANBU tradition to haze new recruits,” Kakashi explained. “We put Yugao through something similar when she joined, only she was forced to ‘kill’ Ko.”
“Shadow clone,” Ko added, trying to be helpful.
“I wasn’t expecting you to be able to use your sharingan,” Kakashi protested, almost pouting. “It seems like someone didn’t tie it tight enough.” His eyes flicked toward Tenzo.
“No. You know what? No. You hit me in the face. You actually hit me in the face.” Tenzo resisted the urge to smack Kakashi upside the head.
Itachi looked on, unamused. He was frustrated, angry, and relieved all at once. “Never,” he snarled, leveling each of his comrades with a look, “do something like that to me again.”
“Easy, kid. It’s a one-time-thing,” Yogi waved his hand. “You made it. You’re in.”
Kakashi smiled behind his mask. “Welcome to the ANBU, Uchiha.”
“Stop moving.” Kakashi grabbed the side of Tenzo’s head, trying to keep him still. He lifted the cotton ball to the cut on Tenzo’s cheek once more, and he flinched.
“It stings,” Tenzo complained. He clawed indignantly at Kakashi’s hand, which had taken a handful of his hair as an incentive to keep him in place.
“It’s worth it.”
“Easy for you to say, Jackass. I didn’t hit you.”
“I told you I’m sorry. I misjudged the distance.”
“Sure you did,” Tenzo snapped sarcastically. “Now let me go.”
Kakashi made a noise of disapproval, keeping his hold on him. “Not yet. Have to make sure it’s clean.”
Tenzo sighed, his patience wearing thin. “I don’t know why I put up with you.”
“There’s a list. Should I go chronologically or alphabetically?” Kakashi’s grip finally loosened, and he began to pack away the med kit which sat open on his kitchen table.
Tenzo got to his feet, radiating annoyance at Kakashi’s callousness. Without a word, he started for the door, but Kakashi caught him by the fabric of his shirt.
“Kakashi-”
“You said my name.”
“Yes.”
“You’re mad at me.”
“Yes.”
Silence fell as Tenzo waited for Kakashi to say something or let him go. He did neither for several seconds. Finally, he let go and trudged over to his bed, where he sat with his legs crossed and back against the wall. His eyes met Tenzo’s back as he spoke. “I didn’t listen to my voice of reason.” Another pause. “You were right.”
“I know.” Tenzo’s words were flat, but he had turned around.
Kakashi thought for a moment. “Would it make it even if I let you punch me in the face?” The look in his eyes showed he was serious. He was so far off the mark that Tenzo couldn’t keep himself from laughing. The white-haired ninja arched an eyebrow at his reaction.
“No, Senpai. I’m not that petty.”
“Oh, good. I was worried for a minute.”
“And Senpai?”
“Yes?”
“Next time, we use my plan.”

Kakashi x reader
Warning: character death
The rain pattered against the window, lining up raindrops for a speed battle. I followed them with my eyes as they ran all the way down the glass pane one by one. Outside was one of the nurses, hurrying to collect the laundry before it got all drenched. Somehow it seemed like it rained quite often in this part of town. It was the calmer part, where a lot of elders lived. There were also a lot of them here around me, although I was barely in my twenties. It was a soothing yet terrifying feeling to be here, shrouded from the busy life of town and most importantly, from the other ninjas. My old uniform hung above a chair, feigning a false image of the long since forgotten hope.
There was no way to deny I missed being a ninja. Sometimes, my old reflexes still kicked in when one of the nurses startled me. But like this, it was impossible to escape reality and the fact that my days as a Jōnin were over. This was the dark side of being a ninja. They didn´t teach that to the young kids at the academies.
The spot in front of the window was the best place to spend most of the day. It was relaxing to let the bright rays of sunshine warm your face while hearing the birds sing and chirp. Some of the staff was worried about me and tried to talk me into going out into the garden instead. I hated when they talked to me like that, I wasn´t a goddamn child! And it saddened me to visit the garden since the other people that lived here were there all the time. Seeing them just constantly reminded me of my own situation.
No matter the circumstances, I still knew how to entertain myself with drawing and reading. My favourite thing to do was watching opera and theatre plays, but ever since I lived here, I had not been to an opera hall many times. It wasn´t like I was hiding. At least not completely. I was simply scared to go outside. People could easily attack me and I was helpless if they did so. This feeling gnawed on me down to my very nerves. The children stared and sometimes even giggled and laughed while adults tried to act normal around me and scolded the young ones for their behaviour. No, it wasn´t like I was hiding, I just couldn´t take all this for long so I barely went outside.
No one forced me to be here. At the start I´d not wanted to come here and thought I could still live on my own. Though after a short time I´d accepted that this was the best solution for me.
My old friends sometimes came for a visit. Anko tried to visit me as often as she could, but the life of a ninja was very busy. She often gave me new books or some souvenirs from the places her missions had led her to. Of course I was jealous since I was used to taking missions and traveling but I did my best to look strong whenever she came for a visit. I gave my best to look strong to everyone. The thought of some of my friends or the nurses pitying me was disgusting.
Being engrossed in thoughts like I usually was, I didn´t notice that someone approached me until I heard the footsteps a few metres before they reached the door to my room. It pushed open and my old friend came in. Actually, he wasn´t only my old friend, but also my old crush. More like current crush. Or rather the one guy I knew I would always have a thing for.
“How did you come here in all of that rain?” My greeting seemed rather could hadn´t it been for the soft smile on my lips.
“Oh it rained? I didn´t notice.” Kakashi said in his usual dry tone, but this time it held a small wave of amusement. The sarcasm literally dripped down from him in the wetness that dripped down from his clothes and messy silver hair. I tried not to calculate on my head how long ago his last visit had been. I tried my best to only feel happy that he was here right now. I´d really missed this little bastard.
Kakashi took his time to take off his soaked flak jacket, throwing it casually onto an empty chair. Then he sat down next to me, pulling up another chair to the window and I couldn´t help but watch how his muscles flexed under his blue clothing.
“Let´s talk for real now. How are you?”
My gaze drifted away from him, out of the window. The raindrops pattering against the window was the only sound in the room. I knew what he wanted to ask with that question. My condition was what he really wanted to know. I mustered up all of my physical strength and very slowly stood up. Because I was so close to the window, I could steady myself on the sill, only with my right arm though.
Kakashi was as silent as I was and I couldn´t stand this lack of words, the anticipation that was almost visible in the room.
“It could be better.” I finally managed to say. Small tones of repressed anger found their way into my voice as I leaned my head against the window. I was angry at myself for everything. It was my fault that I had to be here, that I like this. My condition wasn´t getting any better. In fact, it had only worsened since I got here. I didn´t blame the medic ninjas that tried their best, my case was just hopeless. I should have never went on that mission that day, I should have-
“y/n-chan.” Kakashi´s voice roused me from slumber. Immediately I blushed, disappointed that I´d let my thoughts drift like this when he was around. I felt sorry. My legs gave up under me and for a second I threatened to hit the ground, but strong arms wrapped around my waist and kept me up. I closed my eyes and leaned my head back at Kakashi, enjoying his closeness. He didn´t say a thing and only held me. Probably he understood.
The silver haired Jōnin had been my crush for so long. I had wanted to make a move on him after I came back from that mission but since it didn´t play out as planned I´d never gotten to that. My insecurities had taken their best on me after that accident and like this, confessing to Kakashi was not manageable. My confidence was balanced again, but the nurses had talked about rumours… Oh Kakashi.
“There´s a theatre play tonight. I thought you would like to go there.”
His words shook me.
“That would be great.” I appreciated him trying to lure me out of my self-declared seclusion. Normally, Kakashi would never do something for others. That bastard was way too selfish for that. Maybe he did it because he thought my days on earth were restricted. Well, I wasn´t going to go down that easily!
After the rain had settled, Kakashi made his way into town with me. The copy nin carried me on his back since neither of us were interested in carrying the wheelchair around. And it was way more embarrassing this way. Well, at least for everyone else than me. Being this close to him, it brought back old memories. I did my best to not let the rumours sadden me too much, but it did not always work. The nurses had talked about seeing Kakashi with a young Kunoichi particularly often in the last months. There was no way I could be angry at him about that. In my physical state, no one could seriously plan on spending his life together with me. The sweet pain that seemed to crush my heart whenever I thought about it was all too familiar. I tried to ignore it as I leaned my head on the silver haired ninja´s shoulder. With him, I did not feel vulnerable. He made me feel strong and protected. Probably Kakashi felt the same way when he was around that Kunoichi.
My thoughts kept tying a knot inside my head, and no matter in which direction they went, it kept tangling. As the curtains lifted and the stage play started, my mind went blank for a second, blinded by the excitement and anticipation. Fifteen minutes into the play I first spared my comrade a glance again, and was surprised to see Kakashi actually staring at the actors on stage. His expression seemed rather bored and normally he would´ve gotten out his book to read instead of torturing himself with this evening that was obviously not to his liking. But tonight was different. Tonight he paid attention. Whenever I looked back ahead, there was a pair of eyes glued to the back of my head. I pretended not to notice and the feeling disappeared soon. The only thing I did was letting my mind fully focus on the play as I listened to the words that I already knew by heart.
Afterwards I remember being so sleepy that I had missed the end of the play. Even though I didn´t want to admit it, it had been hard for me to stay at the brink of consciousness before I fell into the depths of sleep. Kakashi had carried me back to my room. I had felt so calm while he was around me, but as soon as my head hit the pillow and I heard him say goodbye, my mind was engulfed in my restless, irregular sleep pattern.
The next day I woke up to a bird chirping outside. Kakashi must´ve left the window open for me. It was a nice yet strange gesture. As if he wanted to tell me that although I lived here, I could still escape and come to the “outer world”. Even though it was the same town, this part of Konoha felt so repellent and devouring. But maybe that was just my point of view.
Getting dressed took it´s time but when I was finished I rolled onto the small hallway. There were other people that lived here besides me, temporary patients or basket cases like me. When I passed the other rooms I did my best not to look through the open doors. Being constantly reminded of all the illnesses made me examine my own wounds. On the surface it was tough, underwater it was much harder to stay sane with the small battles I fought against myself when I looked at my reflection.
Midday was spent in the garden. The nurses had convinced me to enjoy the weather outside since it had rained so much yesterday. I closed my eyes as the warm rays of sunshine warmed my face and forget about the world around me. Time didn´t matter anymore. Since that incident, seconds and days had started speaking another language and I was lost in translation. Whether it was Monday or Friday, I´d spend this day like a Sunday and lazily enjoy the sun. Since I didn´t pay attention otherwise, a visitor came into the garden, unnoticed. Only when I heard my name being said I opened my eyes. This voice was very recognizable.
“Tsunade-sama. How can I help you?”
My words were a mockery of the picture I was. Of course I knew I couldn´t help her in any way. Something flickered over the Sannin´s face. She hadn´t come here for me. Probably she´d needed to talk to an elder and had found me here by coincidence.
“y/n-san. How´s the facility so far? I hope it´s comfortable living here.”
Her tone told me she didn´t really care but it was simple formality to ask.
“It´s alright.”
Suddenly her expression changed and the blonde Hokage looked as if she had just remembered something very important.
“Chizune told me a few days ago that she read in an old scroll about a healing method. It´s a very complicated surgery but it could fix you. Think about it and then contact me, I have to head back to my office.”
Her words hit me like a stone to my face. “Fix me”. She couldn´t have meant that, did she? Nothing could fix me. I don´t remember saying goodbye to her but I think I did because when I looked next to me, there was a small scroll sitting on a close by bench. I picked it up with some difficulties and enrolled it. What I saw there made my hands go numb in anxiety. The procedure of the operation was shortly described. Even though it didn´t contain many words, they managed to turn everything up and down. The scroll had barely mentioned the aftereffects and risks of the surgery, but that wasn´t necessary. I knew everything there was to it. The change of dying was higher than fifty percent and if something went wrong, it could end up destroying even more of my body. Still though, Tsunade-sama was a very skilled medic-nin and if there was only a small chance of being able to heal, being able to go back to the way I was…
Hours later, I was still engrossed in thoughts about the contents of the scroll. I barely noticed how another visitor burst into my room. Some of the nurses must´ve brought me back here.
“y/n-san!”
I looked up.
“I hadn´t expected you here, Gai.”
Even though his big smile and positive attitude seemed kind of ironic at this place, it felt good to see him.
“I came as soon as I heard from Tsunade-sama that she´s planning a surgery for you. I overheard her talking to Chizune and demanded to know what this was about. It looks like there isn´t a high risk, but I still need to convince you to take it! I know you, Dou-san. You love being a ninja. If everything goes well then you can fully recover, just like Lee did. I have faith in Tsunade. Please consider getting the operation.”
I was a bit overwhelmed with the already defined opinion of my former comrade. In fact, my opinion was still in the grey area even though I had thought about it the whole day. But none the less, I forced myself to smile at the always bright shinobi and nodded.
“I`ll consider it. Thanks so much for coming, Gai.”
He gave me a thumps up and eventually left to go back to his duties. Left me here in more thoughts than before. If Gai had heard it, maybe Kakashi knew about it too? He hadn´t come straightly here, though. Thinking about this particular shinobi made me uneasy. It was like a fire inside of me started burning. It gave me strength but at the same time, it used my insides as fuelwood. The determination that it gave, forced me to put everything at risk. Imagining Kakashi with that kunoichi did the rest, then. I was gonna get the surgery. Maybe, if it went well, there would be a future for Kakashi and me. How should I live on like this anyways? I was a living corpse. Not even that, but I knew that I was slowly dying. This wasn´t my first surgery, there had been countless of them before, but none of them had been able to cure me, they had only slowed down the progress. This new method Tsunade had talked about could work. I never knew you could use Chakra like this. It all seemed so promising. I was gonna do it. For myself and for Kakashi.
These thoughts were the last ones in my head as I laid on the cold metal stretcher. They had wrapped belts around my legs and arms. It felt very ironic but they also gave me some kind of mental support. It had been four days since Gai came to me. Kakashi still hadn´t showed up again. But I was gonna fight for us, with or without him at my side. That kunoichi could quit right away. A smile grazed my lips and I slipped into a slumber.
My hands grabbed into white, soft sheets. Free from restraint, I moved through fields of light grass and flowers, down into the ground of the dark, comfortable sea. Nothing could touch me, nothing could break me. High up in the star filled sky I heard someone say my name. Bits of blue coloured pieces stuck to my wrists and the earth underneath was painted in light, mindless colours.
“y/n-chan.”
I remember my mother kissing my forehead.
“y/n-chan!”
The sun tickling my cheeks whenever I faced the sky.
I remember all of the moments I shared in laughter and happiness. They were there, colourful like rainbow and so comforting I couldn´t help but to laugh out in joy. It was all here with me and I didn´t mind getting washed away by the falling tide.
“Dou-chan, I´m sorry. I wanted to tell you, but… I was scared of getting left behind and hurt. I loved you, I always did. But I chose to try and forget, because I knew you would die.
Forgive me.”
