Digi Dynamic Shipping Game
Send me two names among the following 12 13 and I’ll write a short analysis post about them:
Tumblr media
Taichi Yagami | Yamato Ishida | Sora Takenouchi | Koushirou Izumi | Mimi Tachikawa | Jyou Kidou | Takeru Takaishi | Hikari Yagami | Daisuke Motomiya | Miyako Inoue | Iori Hida | Ken Ichijouji | Meiko Mochizuki
Tumblr media
Whether canon provides input on them or not:
When looking at Meiko's interaction partners in Tri, Koushirou is proooobably not the first person who comes to mind; after Jyou, he may share the least amount of screen time with her. And at pure face value, the interactions he does have with her are mostly indirect - and at first glance, not painted in the best light either. They have that kind of dynamic you definitely have to speculate about more to get to the bottom of it - and interestingly enough, once you do, you may discover that they actually have a few things in common. But we'll get to that.
First things first - as mentioned, they mostly are not seen talking to each other, but rather have a third party person to talk through: Mimi. From a shipping perspective, that is both, an interesting parallel and, at the same time, incredibly complicated. Why? On one hand, because you can see/interpret both Koushirou and Meiko as potential love interests for Mimi (with one of them canonically crushing on her and the other OBVIOUSLY opening up through her encouragement, care and emotional/physical affection). On the other hand... Things do not really get very far in text.
Their main interaction point throughout the first few movies consists of Koushirou trying to figure out what causes the distortions corrupting the Digimon - and by doing so, he ends up interrogating Meiko in a very uncomfortable and unfortunate moment, that causes Mimi to snap at him. She says that he's being insensitive, he says they don't have time to focus on "trivial things", completely overlooking her emotional distress in order to fix things as quickly as possible. As mentioned, not the best foundation for any kind of relationship, as Meiko is completely overwhelmed with her partner being corrupted - while Koushirou is desperately trying to stop the cause from spreading even further. And she is aware of his good intentions there - because Taichi explains to her that Koushirou means to investigate the whole thing "with his entire heart" and that that's "all he can do", indirectly asking her to not be mad at him for being "like that". This even leads to her contemplating to apologize to him. Mimi insists that she doesn't have to - and we actually never see the end of that conflict, just the glimpse of hope that Sora's words, "He'll figure it out", will eventually lead to good things...
The next notable interaction is by the very end of Tri - as seen above -, where he entrusts her with his beloved laptop to find out the key to locked-away data, a password only she is capable of knowing, to eventually and actually fix everything in the end.
So what does that tell the viewer? They may not have a lot of significant interpersonal interaction - but subtext indicates that Koushirou strongly believes in Meiko being able to be the key, to find the answers to their problems. He did so by interrogating her, he did so by handing her his laptop - and that is a very familiar pattern.
Not trying to go too much into detail here, but one of my personal favourite headcanons is that, Meiko is what Koushirou COULD have become if he hadn't been as lucky as he was; to be raised by loving parents and getting validated by them upon reconciling; to befriend seven (and eventual eleven) kids and their personal soulmates to figure himself out, friends that ALSO believed in him and his strengths; to be enabled by his best friend to come to Summer camp and come out of his shell in the first place - and to solve a card riddle that would solve a very significant issue. Meiko is incredibly insecure, she had been on her own for a very long time, her low self-esteem goes so far as to have her ask why she was even there in the first place - she visibly needs someone loud and vocal like Mimi to show her how capable she is, just like Koushirou needed Taichi and Tentomon in the same manner. And this may be a huge stretch, because other characters (such as Taichi, Mimi, Sora, Hikari and Takeru) have been WAY more direct and vocal about encouraging her verbally - but Koushirou (who absolutely CAN suffer from severe self-esteem issues as well once he doesn't consider himself "useful") may have passed his own personal torch here in a more subtle, non-verbal way.
Long story short - there is not exactly nothing, but y'all have a lot of guessing work and subtext interpretation to do here.
Whether I think why and how they’d work:
As mentioned above, there are some very subtle similarities that may or may not help them to bond with each other. First of all, it shall not be underestimated that they both have a significant connection with each Mimi and Taichi - and especially the former case may be very enthusiastic to MAKE them spend more time with each other. (Abridged!Mimi may even go so far as to say "I'll make my two nerds have a good time, ha!") I really do believe that Mimi herself could be a great starting point AND topic for them to bond over. "She really is like that, isn't she?", in a gentle, lighthearted way. Because they may have issues opening up fully for some time, due to their bad experiences with interpersonal interaction - but I would argue that they're both also the type that just has to get over that point with each other ONCE and then don't have any issues afterwards anymore. They just need a "starting point". Taichi may actually be a good starting point as well, because both of them may have anecdotes (and their mentioned similarities) to share with each other fondly. Again, there are a lot of self-worth issues they need to overcome first, but once they do, I could imagine them being very soft (and potentially rambly).
(I also have the headcanon that Koushirou likes cats - not only should he have grown up interacting with Hikari and Miko a lot, but his own partner, supposedly a ladybug, has very cat-like tendencies and THAT absolutely should be a bonding topic too!)
Whether I’d prefer them as platonic or romantic ship:
I may argue that, romantically, they MIGHT actually both be not straight-forward enough to get anywhere for a long time and due to the lack of canon interactions, I can only work off the formerly mentioned headcanons... So it may take Mimi and an OT3 setting for things to work out properly. Because hey, with Mimi being the driving force connecting and intertwining them, things could escalate very quickly (because, as mentioned, they're both enchanted by her and have panicked over her being physical with them, they share that fondness for her, so why not channel that energy into a mutual bond as well? And again, the same could apply to Taichi too, because he brought BOTH of them out of their shell to some degree and was VERY protective of them at some point, but I digress). Without that driving force, I'd rather see them as platonic. They're both very supportive (and nerdy) people in their own ways, but nothing too deep on the romantic end.

congrats on the 100!! could i ask for analysis of the akakuro pairing?
Hey, one of my favorite pairings!
In my opinion this is an interesting duo because Akashi may look sweet or manipulative to Kuroko depends on different people's views.
I think that after Bokushi came out, Akashi doesn't really care about Kuroko since the team had become so strong and Kuroko wasn't needed anymore. And he doesn't care about things that aren't necessary for winning: "Anything that does not help us achieve our goal is dispensable." (Q222)
And you have the infamous example of Akashi not caring about Kuroko['s ideals and feelings]: the final match with Meikou.
But that doesn't mean he has no trust in Kuroko's ability.
Tumblr media
As for the original Akashi, it's clear that at first he wasn't warm to Kuroko either. His hints to help Kuroko find out his play style were super vague and Kuroko did everything after that by himself. It's just as Akashi said, "It's not my duty to take care of him. All I did was dangle a thread in front of him."
But after Kuroko impressed Akashi and joined the first string, Akashi started being nicer to Kuroko.
(My guess is there are two possibilities: 1. Because they're no longer strangers. They would be practicing and playing in matches together, and he wanted to help his new teammate. 2. Same as Bokushi: he values people who are useful.)
Either way, I think it also came with a sense of duty. Akashi was the one introducing Kuroko to the team, so it's his responsibility to help Kuroko get used to changes. And either way, he was the one doing most of the explanations to Kuroko, often with a smile.
Tumblr media
After Kuroko's debut match, the coach decided to demote him. Akashi on the other hand tried to find out why Kuroko's passes didn't work. While Aomine was Kuroko's mental support, Akashi pointed out to him what needed to be done to make the technique work.
Tumblr media
Akashi admitted that Kuroko was able to join the team thanks to his own efforts and Akashi did nothing more than giving Kuroko a chance. He also thanked Kuroko for his contributions.
Tumblr media
Kuroko showed great gratitude to Akashi, "it's because you extended your hand to me then that I am who I am today". And they were close enough for Kuroko to spill Ogiwara's name to Akashi.
They also shared a same belief that members should attend practices properly. It seems Kuroko highly valued this trait of Akashi, as he was so shocked when Akashi told him to give up on Aomine.
Tumblr media
Some time ago I saw someone saying that Akashi telling Kuroko to devote himself entirely to passing to avoid attention was something Akashi did to hinder Kuroko's growth because his lack of presence could be gained back. While I do agree that Akashi should have told Kuroko the reason behind his words, "to hinder Kuroko's growth" isn't the reason.
In the Seirin vs Rakuzan match, Akashi's expression when he said Kuroko had lost his lack of presence showed that he totally believed Kuroko will never become a shadow again and had no idea Kuroko could gain it back. He didn't let Kuroko shine because he thought the team would lose its secret weapon forever if that happened.
Tumblr media
By defeating Akashi's other self, Kuroko paved the way for Akashi to come back to his true self and helped him gain back his love for basketball and the desire to win for himself. Akashi expressed his gratitude towards Kuroko in the end:
Tumblr media
So in conclusion, I think that despite the rocky road they were on (and how awfully Akashi treated Kuroko in their third year of junior high), Akashi truly cherishes Kuroko. Kuroko also sees Akashi as a great friend and teammate, and one of the most important people who contributed to the person Kuroko becomes.

i love you (again).
synopsis: You were in love with Akashi for three years, but you never confessed your feelings to him. Seijuurou also liked you and also didn’t told it aloud. The match between Teikou and Meikou made your feelings a bit change... But now you are here – at the Winter Cup Finals – and you see the red-haired boy once again. This time, however, not as a Junior High School student, but as a Seirin High manager.

→  in Teikou Junior High ←
↘ You admired everyone on the basketball team. You were really delighted with this sport, especially since you could watch the game so close as a team manager for Teikou and as a friend of the Generation of Miracles, Kuroko and Momoi.
↘ Your role in the team was to take care of the players’ well-being; you were great at planning training and analyzing other teams, but the team always lacked with health care before and after games. Therefore, you left the analysis to the pink-haired teenager, and took care of the bodies and minds of your all friends. You helped Midorima and bandaged his fingers, you gave Aomine and Kise water or towels, you stopped all Tetsuya’s bleedings, and also you brought some snacks for Murasakibara who let you at that time to wrap his knees with some plasters.
↘ You cared for the boys as best you could and the captain was grateful all the time, even though he wasn’t showing it as he should.
↘ By the way, few people knew that you had feelings for Seijuurou. One person was actually knew about i, and it was Kuroko, because you were always the closest to him – and you have come even closer to each other after the changes between the whole team and when each of the members of the core squad improved their basketball skills. You and Tetsu had really similar thoughts on team play. You also liked vanilla shake, so your friendship was even stronger.
↘ When the last Winter Cup competition came, you were really surprised by what was happening on the court. Momoi thought the same, gently squeezing your hand to cheer you both up.
↘ Then it was time for the match between your school and Kamata West Junior High and everything looked like it always was. However, in the middle of the match, Kuroko was injured and had to leave the gym. You did the same thing because you were very worried about your best friend, especially as a Teikou team nurse-manager.
↘ So you spent time with the unconscious Tetsuya until the end of the semi-finals, talking to Satsuki and Seijuurou for a while and then stopping the blue-haired boy from playing on the court. You knew, you knew perfectly well that the young boy wanted to play with his friend from Meikou Junior High, but his condition didn’t allow it.
↘ That’s why you wished Momoi and the captain good luck, and stayed with Tetsuya, comforting him. But you had a bad feeling about this game in the back of your head, so you told the blue-eyed player about it.
↘ “This is our last competition, right? I hope it will be pleasant and worth remembering.” You smiled warmly at which the teenager nodded. “I wish we could play like in first and second grade. When everyone was enjoying the game, not the win.” You added a little quieter, and Kuroko sighed lowly.
↘ “It’s going to be okay, Y/N-chan... Remember that after the finals you were supposed to talk to Akashi-kun.” He replied with a soft laugh that made your cheeks redden.
↘ “Y-Yeah. But I don’t know if I’m ready for this...”
↘ The conversation was nice and calm, Kuroko rested, you too. You weren’t thinking about the game, although you still felt a strange feeling of stress and insecurity.
↘ At the end of the final quarter of the final, Satsuki visited you and Kuroko who wanted to see what was happening on the court. Of course, you and your pink female friend helped the boy get to the TV.
↘ At the same second, you and Kuroko noticed that something was wrong, so you grabbed his warm hand and ran towards the huge gym, gasping for breath.
↘ You both entered the big room at the moment when Kuroko’s friend was aiming for the basket hoop and Murasakibara threw the ball into it, scoring two points for the opposing team.
↘ Seeing the score on the digital scoreboard and hearing the conversation between basket squad, your heart pounded painfully and your eyes turned to the Teikou captain.
↘ A few tears ran down of your red cheeks when you remembered their first Nationals competition and the energy they had at that time. Now, they were completely unlike those happy players.
↘ “Sei-kun... Why?” You whispered, taking a step back.
↘ That day was the last time when you saw the Teikou basketball team on the court. You didn’t show up at any next trip, match or training, and your manager role was over.
↘ Additionally, for the next few weeks you didn’t think about your feelings towards the captain. They have been forgotten.
→  in Seirin High ←
↘ You and Kuroko chosen the same High School – Seirin High, obviously. Thanks to the new school team, you two could enjoy basketball again as you used to. You made friends with the whole squad, with Riko and even with the cute little dog that Tetsu found.
↘ You were supporting the team again as a manager. Or rather as a nurse-manager. The boys (especially Teppei) were really grateful to you and they were glad to have someone like you in their squad.
↘ You were with them all the time, you supported their game and dreams of winning the Winter Cup.
↘ And... they finally reached the finals.
↘ You were more than happy when they defeated the Kaijou High and Kise.
↘ But shortly after that, your eyes met the two-colored orbs that you admired and loved so much some time ago.
↘ You didn’t have the courage to approach Seijuurou before the match, so you sat on the wooden bench during the game, first watched your team, then the Rakuzan basketball squad and Akashi.
↘ Not gonna lie, but it was the worst hour of your life because too much was happening.
↘ You had your hands full.
↘ But when the game was over, Seirin High won and Akashi smiled and shook Kuroko’s hand... You couldn’t stop yourself. You got up and came over to him with many salty tears in your eyes. Tetsuya understood it very right and he didn’t blame you for not congratulating your team first. He knew perfectly well that you had been waiting for this moment for over three years. So he smiled in your direction, walked away from you two and started talking with the team, with Kagami, with Kiyoshi, with captain, with Riko.
↘ In meantime you stood in front of Akashi’s figure and tried to wipe away the tears that were unpleasantly biting your both cheeks.
↘ “...I missed you.” You whispered shyly, lifting your head to look at him. “Happy you.” You added with a smile, to which the red-haired player laughed and held out his hand in your direction.
↘ “I missed you too.” He answered honestly as you put your fingers on his pale skin. “Also happy you.” He pulled your body against him and hugged you uncertainly as you let him to do it. “I’m sorry for everything.”
↘ You moved a few centimeters away from him and then took a deep breath.
↘ “Listen, Y/N.” / “Listen, Sei-kun.” You laughed together while telling the other person to start. Eventually, however, Seijuurou started talking.
↘ “I know that a lot of time has passed and a lot has changed. I have no idea if you have someone special to your heart, but... I like you. I have liked you since you became our manager at Teikou. I hope you accept these feelings, but if you don’t... I understand. I was a terrible person and...”
↘ You hugged him again, ignoring his sweaty skin and clothes. “I admit, I tried to forget about you, but I like you too. I liked you from the first year of Junior High School and I always wanted to tell you about it. I’m so glad you came back. I hope someday... I hope we can play with other boys again like before.” You said in a warm tone, looking at Akashi, then at Seirin team, then at the Generation of Miracles boys who sat in the stands.
↘ Then you looked at Rakuzan capitan once again.
↘ “Okay. I don’t mind. But we’ll go on a date first.”
↘ “O-Oh, yeah. Right. D-Date.” You laughed nervously, feeling your heart beat faster.
↘ “EYYY, AKASHICCHI KISS HER, YOU DUMMY!”
↘ Your cheeks turned a hundred times redder not only because of the sound of Ryouta’s loud voice, but also because Seijuurou... actually did it.
↘ Now, you had the impression that your feelings not only came back, but also grew up.

Ok, what I like about thunderbolt fantasy S3 is that it retake the whole "every twist is subtly foreshadowed" from S1 that was kinda lacking (in subtlety) in season 2.
Like, Kasei Meikou being the emperor was prepared for the whole season:
- his illusions & the way he appear to his sbires being similar to how an emperor stay hidden while talking to his retainers.
- the similarity between the cultists & the imperial guards, which is an echo to the fact they all, unwittingly, serve the same master.
- The scale metaphor which implied he saw himself in control of both good and evil, but likely also order and disorder. Thus, he subtly implied being both the head of the state and the head of it's opposition.

Hashtag Japanese geography crash course with HypMic (+Also quick language crash course
Tumblr media
Apparently Ikebukuro(marked red), Shibuya(marked yellow), and Shinjuku(marked grey) are 3 major secondary central business district of Tokyo(marked magenta).
Meanwhile Yokohama(marked blue) is the second largest(right after Tokyo) city in Japan, and serves as an outport for Tokyo.
For the meaning of each city, I decided to go backward from Tokyo to Bukuro:
東京 Tokyo: 東 = east 京= capital
新宿 Shinjuku: 新=new 宿=inn, lodge
渋谷 Shibuya: 渋=astringent 谷=valley
横浜 Yokohama: 横=side, horizontal 浜=bay
Yokohama division’s album ‘BAYSIDE M.T.C’ and Jyuto’s solo ‘Bayside Smoking Blues’ are obviously referring to this.
池袋 Ikebukuro: 池 = pond, reservoir 袋 = sack
Owl in Japanese is pronounced as ‘fukurouふくろう,’ which sounds similar to bukuro. In fact, the owl has been a community symbol in Ikebukuro, thought to bring good luck. Located in the basement of JR Ikebukuro Station since 1987, this certain owl statue has been famous meet-up spot in Ikebukuro.
Tumblr media
(From left: Saburo, Ichiro, Jiro)
You can also find three owls in Hoodstar MV:
Tumblr media
From this another screenshot from Hoodstar, you can see four emblems for each division on the subway-like diagram.
Tumblr media
Ikebukuro: Owl, as explained above.
Yokohama: Skull, following Samatoki’s skull-themed design, as can be seen in his shirt and microphone.
Shibuya: Candy, a reference to Ramuda’s last name Amemura飴村, which means ‘candy village’
Shinjuku:  Wolf, a reference to Matenrou麻天狼, which roughly translates into ‘hemp’s heavenly wolf’
But what about the line layout? Is it simply the creative design? No. I came across this particular tweet-
Tumblr media
It says the world of HypMic is actually inspired by Nagoya, of all cities!
Above is the diagram of the subway lines in Nagoya.
Yellow line: 東山線 Higashiyama Line. Line number 1. Translates into roughly ‘East Mountain Line’
Purple line: 名城線 Meijou Line. Line number 2 and 4(it’s a bit complicated). Translates into roughly ‘Name Castle Line’
Lavender double line: 名港線 Meikou Line. Line number 2. Translates into roughly ‘Name Harbor Line’
Blue line:  鶴舞線 Tsurumai Line. Line number 3. Translates into roughly ‘Crane Dance Line’
Red line: 桜通線 Sakuradouri Line. Line number 6. Translates into roughly ‘Through Cherry Blossom Line’
Pink line: 上飯田線 Kamiiida Line. Line number 7. Translates into roughly ‘Above Rice Field Line’
Find the four lines that have colors of four divisions. Don’t they look strikingly similar?
Tumblr media
For last but not least, here’s the screenshot from good ol’ Google Maps. Subway lines are represented as grey lines.

chapter 10: Meikou Elementary
ふぅ~、やっと終わったよ。
これで街の全オド分布調査終了!
Wow, it’s finally done,
my Od distribution survey!
[TAKANO:] Phew! Finally finished.
I'm done with my investigation into the city's Od distribution.
----
あと家に帰って、 この情報を元に分析ってとこだね。
詳しいことは分析してみないと、 はっきりと言えないけど、
でもさ、ある傾向が出ているのは 確かなんだ。
Now, I’ll go home and analyze the data.
I can’t be sure without properly analyzing it, but
there are definitely certain visible trends.
[TAKANO:] Now it's time to go home and analyze the data.
I can't say anything about the details for sure yet...
...but there's definitely a certain trend there.
----
それは、あの石像あるだろ? 街のいろんなところにある石像。
オドの乱れが石像付近で一番強く、 周囲に向かって小さくなってる。
It’s that stone statue. The one all over town.
The Od fluxuation is stron- gest near the statue...
[TAKANO:] You know those stone statues? The ones all over town.
The disturbance in Od is strongest around the statues, and it reduces as it moves farther away.
----
すなわちオドの流れがあるんだ。
石像へと流れ込む、 ある種の流れが、この街にあるんだ。
So there’s an Od flow...
There’s some kind of flow leading to the statues.
[TAKANO:] Meaning there's a flow to Od.
There's some kind of current in this town, drawing Od towards the statues.
----
これは一大発見なんだ。
オドに流れがあるなんて、 今まで聞いたことも見たこともない。
This is a huge discovery.
No one’s ever heard of Od having a flow.
[TAKANO:] This is a huge breakthrough.
There's never been any hint of Odic current before.
---- さっそく、今から帰って 理論の構築を始めるつもりだ!
それじゃ!
I’ve gotta get home and work on my theory!
See you later!
[TAKANO:] Well, it's time to go home and work on my theory!
See you later!

Hiya! I hope this isn't an obvious question or that I've overlooked this question already answered. How do you find the proper kanji to use for the Japanese names on these templates? I know there's the English version but if love to use the kanji. I'm just kind of clueless here.
No problem at all, I love this question! The answer is honestly unique to everyone, it depends on what your character’s name actually is!
I’m going to separate my answer into three sections since I don’t know what kind of name you’re going for. I’m also including non-Japanese names for those who might be interested in a few tips and tricks.
Using Non-Japanese Names in the Templates
If you have a fully non-Japanese name, your template can do something creative with the name section. For example, you could separate the first and last names like in this example (submitted by anon):
Tumblr media
You can of course separate it differently in this example too (like, “Fenton” in grey rather than “Danny”). Or you can put a title or something instead of a name, or an organization/group/school name or something. I made an example using the villain generator (and I used a KH character because they were the first thing I thought of that had titles):
Tumblr media
Non-Japanese Names Written with Japanese Characters
If you still want to use Japanese characters (kana) for English names, there are ways to sound it out in Japanese, so to speak. When you want to spell a name in Japanese, do it phonetically and not by how it’s literally spelled, and you should write it in katakana because it’s a foreign name (katakana is generally used for foreign words and names!). In the example below (submitted by @major-dongliz), “Oskar” (or Oscar for this matter) is spelled “オスカー” which is romanized as “Osukaa”.
Tumblr media
If you don’t know how Japanese syllables work, it’s basically like English consonant sounds are kinda smushed together with another vowel sound that drops off (it’s mostly a “silent u” kinda thing, but sometimes they use the other vowels too depending on where it is in the word), and longer sounds are extended vowels (commonly, “er” sounds become “aa” sounds in Japanese, and in katakana “aa” is written with a dash like “aー”… which isn’t how it works in hiragana, but hey I don’t make the rules), and there are some other linguistic tricks too (the “th” sound becomes “s” or “z” in Japanese, and “wi/wu/we” typically becomes “ui/u/ue”, “vi” typically becomes “bi”, and a few others I can’t think of off the top of my head).
Tumblr media
For another example (seen above), the kana name for “Haera Song” (submitted by @fullmemetalalchemist) is written as “ソン・ヘラ”, which is romanized as “Son Hera”. You can see that not only was the name format changed from western (First Name, Last Name) to eastern/native/Japanese format (Last Name, First Name), but the spelling isn’t literal either (which would have made it “ソング・ハエラ” or something, which isn’t how the name is pronounced at all). Changing the name format is optional however (Japanese people do respect the way Americans/others say their names, so a non-Japanese name like “Haera Song” in kana should still be “Haera Song” when referenced by other Japanese people–but, again, it’s optional and preference for your personal UA templates).
Japanese Names Written with Japanese Characters
For real-people surnames, normally they’ll mean something like “base of the mountain” (Yamamoto/山本, which is a common Japanese surname) because way back in ancient times they decided surnames were based on where people were from/born/raised or something. For first/given names, typically the names will be meaningful somehow because normally that’s how people choose names for their kids. Asian families tend to name their kids something like “beautiful child” (Kimiko/貴美子) or “great wisdom” (Daichi/大智) because they hope their kid will end up wealthy/famous/healthy/smart/etc. (You can look up some common Japanese names and their kanji spellings on “behindthename” or google it!)
Some given names might not even have kanji in them and simply use hiragana or katakana, or a mix of kanji and hiragana (very rarely though), but it really depends on preference; and when paired with a surname, the surname is always in kanji. For example, the name “Riku” can be spelled with the “陸” kanji or the hiragana “りく” or katakana “リク” (it depends on preference–the creators of Kingdom hearts use the katakana for Riku, most likely because KH characters are meant to look/be “foreign” compared to native Japanese people).
But since there are SO many ways to read kanji and so many kanji that can be read in similar ways, you can get two or more kanji spellings for the same name which will give it different meaning (see: Kimiko/君子 meaning “noble child” and Daichi/大地 meaning “great land/earth”). You can also get one Kanji spelling for multiple names (for example, “陸” can be “Riku”, “Takashi”, “Atsushi” or “Noboru”; “明光” can be “Akari”, “Akemi”, or “Meikou”; and “春” can be “Haru”, “Azuma”, “Kazu”, “Toki”, or “Hajime”).
That said, the different kanji readings also gives way for some REALLY GREAT puns, which is what some of the character names in MHA pretty much DEPENDS on. This kind of thing doesn’t really happen in real life, but we’ve got a Theme Naming trope going on in MHA which lends really well to explaining just who the characters are and what they can do, and just having super fun punny names in general. The very best example of this is Tetsutestu Testutestu, whose name is spelled “鉄哲徹鐵” (literally in order, these kanji mean “iron wisdom, strike iron”–yes, his name is basically Moon Moon for “iron”).
Tumblr media
You asked how to find “proper” kanji for names, but there isn’t really a way to decide other than what you want the name to mean or where it comes from. If you don’t have a name for your character, you can totally have fun looking up kanji and trying to make a cool/fun name from the meaning you want. (I’ll actually make a second post for that later since this one is getting long, but it’ll be in the queue so I’ll link back later when I do make it. EDIT: Here it is!!)
If you already have a name for your character that you like though, there are a few ways to look up kanji to fit it. The easiest might be to go on jisho.org (not linked because tumblr is bad at this, but you can google or type in that url there and check it out) and type your character’s name in the search bar followed by the “#names” filter (see green box below). This will give you a dictionary of all the different kanji spellings for that name (if it exists and isn’t one of those nonsense-y mishmash of cool sounds, anyway), and from there you can copy the kanji (see red boxes below) back into the search bar and figure out which name variant has the kanjis with the meanings you want them to have (see pink box way below).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You don’t have to make it super punny like Testutestu’s name, of course. Some of the names depends on a different kind of pun than just simply a kanji/spelling pun–for example, “Ashido” means “reed door” but it was chosen because it sounds like the English word “Acid”, which is what Mina Ashido’s quirk is. So don’t be afraid to just pick a name that looks nice if you already got one chosen but just don’t know how to “spell” it.
Anyway this post got long so I’ll end it here. Thanks for the ask and sorry if I got rambly! Hope it helped, feel free to send me another ask if you need any more!
