Thyreosaurus atlasicus Zafaty et al., 2024 (new genus and species)
Tumblr media
(Armor plates of Thyreosaurus atlasicus [scale bars = 5 cm], from Zafaty et al., 2024)
Meaning of name: Thyreosaurus = shield lizard [in Greek]; atlasicus = from the Atlas Mountains
Age: Middle Jurassic (Bathonian–Callovian?)
Where found: El Mers III Formation, Fès-Meknès, Morocco
How much is known: Partial skeleton of one individual including several vertebrae, ribs, armor plates, and a limb bone.
Notes: Thyreosaurus was a stegosaur, possibly closely related to Adratiklit, which is also known from the Middle Jurassic of Morocco, and Dacentrurus from the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous of Europe. The type specimen is estimated to have been about 6 m long in total body length, but had not finished growing when it died.
The armor plates of Thyreosaurus were unusual in that they exhibit a cross-hatched texture on one side. In other armored dinosaurs, similar textures are generally found at the base of bony armor where it is embedded into their skin. The describers of Thyreosaurus thus suggest that these plates lay flat against its body, instead of standing vertically as is typical of back plates in other stegosaurs.

A new stegosaurian dinosaur (Ornithischia: Thyreophora) with a remarkable dermal armour from the Middle Jurassic of North Africa. Dinofact #62
All known pachycepahlosaurs, except for two species, Ferganocephale and Stenopelix lived during the late Cretaceous. Ferganocephale, which can be traced back to the middle Jurassic, lacks some features on its teeth distinctive to all other known pachycephalosaurs, and Stenopelix, traced to the early Cretaceous, is based on a partial skeleton lacking the skull, which some scientists have now reclassified as a ceratopsian. With both outlying species of pachycephalosaurs sometimes considered nomen dubiums, it is possible that all known pachycephalosaurs lived during the late Cretaceous period.

yknow what i actually love dave so much as a character. like he was obviously written to be the classic silly adult but he actually got to act like an adult. he would joke around and whatnot but he also got to be dead serious. he'd say stupid things at the wrong time but also got a chance to fall apart and rant. he was immature but in the most mature way. he was able to have fun. he was able to feel fear. he loved being happy but was also allowed to get upset and mad. he tried to act like "one of the teens" but was also fully aware he was in charge of those teens and was willing to put his life on the line for them. dave was a well rounded comic relief and that's not something often seen in media and i appreciate it

I hate you constant production of sequels and prequels. I hate you reboots that contribute nothing. I hate you origin stories that no one asked for. I hate you everyone that makes adaptations and leave the original creator in the dark. I hate you everyone that takes stories and strips away everything they have to say so it can appeal to every possible person. I hate you everyone involved who thinks no one notices when you directly ignore the events/cannon of the previous installment. I hate you shows that only make sense if you've seen all the other shows. I hate you studios that think you can buy yourselves a good story.

do u ever see comments on posts and artwork full of effort and thought and passion etc and like. think about that post that talks about how people have the darndest time interacting with art without trying to crack a joke about it. is it really so boring to take someone's art seriously? is it necessary to demean someone's efforts, however unintended, for a 'joke' that consists of you being like "ooOOoOh how weird lol!!" like i don't want or mean to be a killjoy. but i think about that post a lot. like y do u need to add a punchline to something that doesn't need one. who asked u. why does it need to be funny. and u don't even have the decency to acknowledge its merit ;/
#wynn speaks#don't get me wrong i love being silly it's 1 of my most valued traits#but like. idk.#imagine seeing a genuinely cool animation of how a feathered dinosaur might look in a jurassic park-esque movie#and you comment that it looks like a big bird creepypasta. like rlly u couldn't keep that to urself?#sorry it's probably not that serious. i'm just extremely petty and that comment annoyed me and now i am in my petty mode#i went to check the artist out (they're on twitter @wobblyworks) and turns out dinosaurs is their Whole Thing#tbh the feathered dino animation reminds me of like#so i went to this science museum to chaperone my little sister n her classmates and they had this fun li'l thing#where a guy was in basically a full-body puppet which was a feathered t-rex#and they treated it like a 'real' t-rex while talking abt dino facts#they let kids throw a light ball at it to 'play' w it it was very cute#and like you could See the puppetteer u could see their legs and shoes and stuff#but even middle schoolers were able to look past that and see how genuinely fucking cool that was!#like yes they made jokes abt the sneakers and how a human crawled out the rex when the show was over and they had to put the suit away#but they were in so much genuine aw it was rlly cute. and it makes sense bc the suit was really well made! it had a moving mouth/jaw#and i wouldn't be surprised if it had a mechanism to blink its eyes#but i digress#i'm not saying that u can Only interact with art with complete seriousness. like jokes r fine#but idk. becomes a problem when that is the only way u interact with art. and also if you're unfunny and personally annoy me#and i'm not saying that person is the kind of person to do that. bc idk them. i'm just like#kind of annoyed with seeing repeat instances of comments that r like 'hmm this art... what if i made it about how funny i am!''#i say kind of but then i look up and there is an entire wall of tags that r just me griping about it and a detour about a dino puppet suit#sorry besties i just needed to get that out of my system ily <3#btw the dude's part of a project/kickstarter called 'forgotten bloodlines'#and it seems to be an animated documentary about prehistoric creatures#i recommend u check out the trailer it looks soo cool

Tharosaurus indicus Bajpai et al., 2023 (new genus and species)
Tumblr media
(Neck vertebrae of Tharosaurus indicus [scale bars = 50 mm], from Bajpai et al., 2023)
Meaning of name: Tharosaurus = Thar Desert lizard [in Greek]; indicus = from India
Age: Middle Jurassic (Bathonian)
Where found: Jaisalmer Formation, Rajasthan, India
How much is known: Several partial vertebrae and a rib.
Notes: Tharosaurus was a sauropod. Although it is known from fragmentary remains, the describers of Tharosaurus found it to be a diplodocoid sauropod in their analyses, which would make it a member of the lineage more closely related to Diplodocus and Apatosaurus than to Brachiosaurus. More specifically, it may have been a dicraeosaurid, a group of diplodocoids probably best known for including the bizarre Amargasaurus and Bajadasaurus from the Cretaceous of South America. If this classification turns out to be accurate, Tharosaurus would be the oldest known diplodocoid, and may suggest that the Indian subcontinent was an important region for their early evolution.
Reference: Bajpai, S., D. Datta, P. Pandey, T. Ghosh, K. Kumar, and D. Bhattacharya. 2023. Fossils of the oldest diplodocoid dinosaur suggest India was a major centre for neosauropod radiation. Scientific Reports 13: 12680. doi: 10.1038/s41598-023-39759-2

on the phone with comrade d today, she wondered if they were going to make any more jurassic park movies (she wants to get a dvd box set with all the films, but not yet if they're going to make more). and i replied that my idealistic side would say 'no' because they've done the big reunite-the-cast film and come to a story conclusion, but my much louder, cynical side says 'of course they will because they can make more money from it, especially from merchandising' and that endless milking of cash cows for diminishing artistic returns is part of my current detachment and disillusionment with today's media landscape (in which the only things i am "keeping up with" are jeopardy!, the pbs airings of all creatures great and small, my favorite canadian sheep farmer youtuber, and a handful of npr podcasts).
and my thoughts keep coming back to that, and i can't tell if i've disengaged from all these things i used to really enjoy (or at least be very invested in) because i'm busier than i used to be (or in a different way than i used to be), or because of depression/depression-adjacent patterns, or my attention has always been this fleeting, or if things are actually worse. realistically, it's probably a combination of things, but am i using media crit sound bytes to excuse/cover for personal problems? or is it just that i've read too much criticism and become a snob? (lbr i was always a snob tho; there's even a tag) idk i sometimes feel like i no longer know how to act when someone is really enthusiastic about something i used to and no longer like. this happens very frequently with hp because i work at the library, but also because it was such a foundational text for my generation -- so many of my age-and-social-class peers are deeply devoted potter fans, still, even with how much joanne has shown her ass (and even before that, i was the one saying, no, i'm not interested in pottermore or anything else she has to add, my way of doing fandom is ~*~different~*~) -- but it also happens when i have to say i stopped watching got well before it ended, or that i have no interest in rings of power, or that no, i haven't watched the most recent [x] installments of [y] franchise (this also happens with things i still legitimately like). and feeling nothing in the face of someone else's enthusiasm, enthusiasm i would once have shared, is so uncomfortable. it makes me wonder what's wrong with me, why i can't just enjoy things any more, why i have to bring myself down like this, am i broken?
well? am i?
