Two cameos in this one! Last panel features two of my friends as fauns. They’re very important people to me and they even housed me for a while when I was inbetween housing. I don’t know how many rants they’ve listened to about my silly minotaur story. Other cameo is my two rabbit roomies because why not haha

Highly disappointed that the “Infinite” Realms is always just full of ghosts. Monster AUs have so much potential, especially with all the DC crossovers. Vampires that can subsist off the pure energy of ectoplasm present in the air, so they’re never hungry. They can grow/hide/exist all by themselves. Alternately, the realms could act as a base of indefinite preparation for them if they decide to do anything to an infinite number of worlds. Werewolves that are free to play like wolves, to hunt the game they seeded their own dimension/realm with, to be perfectly free. The Yetis who used their magic to make their own home in the Realms as the Ice Age began to fail them. Duulaman’s Egypt, home of an entire sorcerous people, capable of casting the souls of their people into an eternal realm where they could thrive forever in, essentially, the field of reeds. The Mummies found there reanimated so that their revered ancestors could walk amongst them again, or their bodies rejuvenated (good plot there if Hotep-Ra, a traitor, was left as a mummy by his people when everybody else was brought back to life). Pandora, Guardian of Hope, and her Realm of Elysium, a home for all the monsters of Ancient Greece who were cast out/shunned/destroyed by society. A place of healing for the traumatized Minotaur (he was raised to kill people in a dark maze, that’s gotta be traumatic), cursed Medusa, etc (seriously, a rehab center where you can literally hold Hope in your hands when you have none...hek). Not to mention, since she guards Hope, it could be a literal object, and Vlad stealing Hope but not knowing how to use its power is a *highly* interesting plot to me. Somewhere that Desiree, a djinni, can avoid the people who’d only attempt to abuse her power to grant wishes. (There are so many more things to add...Liches, Witch Covens, Dora and Aragon’s Kingdom of Mattingly [dragons], other creatures) Sure, some beings there--like Skulker--want to fight, but by the very nature of Lairs/Realms, he can’t follow others into their homes and expect to survive, so they are safer than anywhere else. The ghosts and creatures that love to battle are free to do so in the regenerative chaos of the realms. The ghosts who want to be left alone can find their own slice of infinity. It truly is, or at least could be, a paradise for everybody... Which makes Pariah Dark so much eviler. The moment he awoke, he destroyed people’s homes so they couldn’t hide from him, he enslaved entire peoples to make thralls for his army, he devoured ghosts--absorbing their essence--to rebuild his lost strength, he used those armies to attack the realms capable of resisting him for a time, he pulled a resisting city into the Realms as an act of aggression. Everything he did was in stark contrast to the path of existence the nations of the realms had chosen, and his will was absolute; all the beings capable of being compelled were compelled to serve him, every lich lost their phylactery to him and were forced to submit to him, every free group was under threat of slavery or extinction. Even Vortex and Undergrowth, two incredibly dark beings, resisted as well as they could, but had Danny not attacked Pariah Dark’s center of power, even they would have fallen. Essentially, Danny stopping Pariah Dark would have far more of an impact, yet also none at all as it would be mostly behind the scenes. Danny, all of fourteen years old, battled the evilest being to have existed at that time in a fight to the death without any guarantee of survival. Frostbite and the other beings, feeling the weakness of Pariah’s forces, since he was occupied with Danny and the attacking ghost forces, launched their own counterattack and arrived before Danny’s duel was over to see Danny, still so small even in the battle suit, fighting the titanic mass of Pariah Dark, King of all Ghosts. Frostbite, left arm shredded by a summoned beast, watched in fascinated horror as Danny’s strength waned, but he still forced Dark back. Pandora, Guardian of Hope, watched a tiny child stare down a stone-face goliath. Vortex, for all his wrath, couldn’t have stood against Pariah, but that diminutive whelp was a storm unto himself and nothing, not even Pariah Dark, it seemed, could stand against a force of nature. Nocturne, Lord of Sleep, King of Dreams, and once a slave to Pariah Dark, had suffered from nightmares since Pariah’s return; his dream realm had fallen, his sleepwalkers obliterated, his precious, harvested dreams destroyed, and Pariah had once again enslaved Nocturne, yet the power of Pariah’s ritual was waning, and Nocturne felt himself awakening from his nightmare. He watched a tiny child, someone who should be dreaming instead of facing down a nightmare, deliver the dream of the king of dreams; Pariah was being forced into his sarcophagus. For Frostbite, Danny became the Great One; to Pandora, he was a child of Hope, a miracle (it didn’t hurt that he locked a great evil in a box either); to Vortex, he was a little storm, a squall; to Nocturne, Danny was a savior and a dream come true, surely, Nocturne could repay him with good dreams...maybe even for the little one’s entire Lair... All I’m saying is that context is everything, and having Vortex be a literal embodiment of storms and nature rather than just a ghost with storm powers is a lot more enticing to me. Pandora being Danny’s ghost mom is great, but her seeing him as a child of what she embodies rather than just “he is smol, I must help,” seems richer. Then there’s the DC crossover potential once Danny inevitably begins letting the peaceful individuals stay in Amity Park under his protection, or sending those who’d fit in to the Infinite Realms (Mr. Freeze and Nora relocating to the Far Frozen where he can get all the help he needs, not live in his suit, and either turn Nora into a ghost or cure her, Poison Ivy to live with Undergrowth [kinda like that island she had in the Bahamas], Killer Croc most likely to Egypt, Harley would fit in with Kitty and Johnny’s level of crazy, etc.). Imagine Batman investigating all his missing rogues, but when he eventually tracks them down, he finds them living peacefully in an infinite realm of places where they can’t hurt anybody permanently, and the people there are similarly obsessive/crazy. But also, Ghost King Danny, Protector of the Infinite Realms, etc., etc., leading an army of “monsters” to defend Earth from Darkseid, or, since Darkseid is always after the Anti-life Equation (considering all their different abilities, it would make sense for ghosts/ectoplasm to be the essence of the equation), defending the Infinite Realms against Darkseid/the Anti-Monitor. That’s all neglecting the chaos potential of Jack and Maddie believing all things not expressly human are ghosts. I also firmly think that since the Infinite Realms connect all universes, there can only ever be one ghost/ectoplasmic entity of any given individual regardless of the universe(s) of origin, and I have written pseudoscience for it (using some computer science and physics ideas, so it makes sense with less hand-waving). That’s neither here nor there, so I will end this before it gets any longer. Anyways, that’s the thought I just had, figured I’d share it with y’all and see if y’all were interested.

DuPont School for Monstrous Youths- Words (and Gestures) to Avoid
There are certain terms that certain species of monster take offense to, and ones that are sensitive and for particular use. I’ll also include some actions that are offensive. Here’s a list that should be helpful! @artzychic27 @imsparky2002
Voodoo dolls generally don’t respond well to being called ‘toys’ or ‘stuffies’. It makes them feel like they’re being treated as less than people.
“Boo!” is a polite greeting only when exchanged between all the different species of ghosts. Coming from other monsters, it’s…cringe.
Flower meanings take a great deal of importance to plant monsters, and certain ones should only be used as a nickname in certain circumstances. For example, ‘daisy’ is a term usually reserved for parent to child, and calling someone ‘my rose’ , the flower of love, should only be used by romantic partners.
It’s also disrespectful to call them ‘weeds’, not because it’s belittling, but because it’s dismissive of weeds, which are plants too.
Any name that implicates a zombie is dumb or slow-witted should be avoided. That’s a derogatory and untrue stereotype.
Yeti is the proper name for the species, ‘Abominable’ is a very hurtful term. The same goes for ‘Bigfoot’ with Sasquatches, it’s a nasty nickname humans gave them.
Werewolves may act like big dogs but that doesn’t make it okay to call them ‘mutt’, ‘mongrel’, ‘fleabag’, etc.
Never. Ever. EVER. Refer to any werebeast as a ‘furry’ if you value your life.
Insectoid and arachnid monsters take great issue with being called ‘pests’.
Most demons at the school don’t like being referred to as ‘hellspawn’, it’s a reminder of the life they managed to escape.
“Fishface” should generally be avoided with any monster species native to the water. Also, NEVER offer them seafood.
Derogatory names based on a vampire’s diet such as ‘leech’ or ‘bloodsucker’ are discouraged.
Shrek references of any sort should be avoided with ogres. It’s just old and annoying at this point.
Faeries are hot-blooded so it’s best to avoid calling them things like ‘pixie’ or especially ‘Tinker Bell’. (They don’t particularly have anything against her, it’s just really irritating to lump all fairies under one name.)
Never ask a gargoyle “How’s Quasimodo?”. That movie had inaccurate and stereotypical depictions of gargoyles.
Don’t ask an eastern dragon about wings and breathing fire. It’s culturally insensitive.
Requesting a phantom to sing an opera piece isn’t a funny joke, it’s rude and ignorant.
Stereotypical witch cackles are offensive to actual witches, who aren’t evil.
If you are not someone a werewolf or werecat knows and trusts, DON’T try to pet them!
It’s incredibly disrespectful to act as if you can’t see a ghost when they’re in the room with you.
It’s also unacceptable to imply that robots are heartless and have no emotions. They care like anyone else.
Minotaurs become very angry when you try to provoke them as a matador would, and they WILL charge at you.
Don’t stick your hand into a skeleton. Their bodies and personal space are as important as anyone else’s.
Don’t ask a centaur for a ride, wait until it’s offered.
Be VERY mindful when speaking to an extraterrestrial. You never know what might be offensive.
Leave your thoughts in the comments and reblogs!

WIP Wednesday
Been a hot minute! Actually finished a WIP since the last time I did this (Magical Mysteries if you're so inclined), so the list is getting a bit of a shuffle. (original post + rules here)
Since they bear repeating, the rules:
In a reblog (or new post w/ rules attached), post up to five (5) filenames of your WIPs; not titles, file names.
Post a snippet from one of them. Snippet must be words you wrote in the last 7 days. We’re posting progress here. If you haven’t made any, go make some and come back to post!
After you’ve posted, people can send you an ask with one of your file names. You must then write 3 sentences in that file. If the filename is one you can’t share from (for example, an event fic), write 3 sentences on it anyway, and then 3 more on another to share.
That’s it! You can invite others to join in, or just post. If you tag me in your post, I will send you an ask request!
If you’re reading this, you’re invited!
If you see someone posting a WIP Wednesday Game snippet, send them an ask! Make them write. (Make me write!)
Tagged by @eriquin, thank you!
File names!
0 - Tales of the Outer Planes
1 - Emergence
Steddie Witches AU
Til I Lose My Breath
Snippet below the cut!
From 1 - Emergence:
“Do minotaurs hibernate?” he asked into the void. “I think they should.” The newspaper felt unnecessarily heavy on his chest, like a weighted blanket of ink and expectation and whatever fresh hell was on the docket today. They’d just defeated a monster yesterday. Didn’t they get at least a day off? “She got out of bed on her own this morning,” Vida said, kneeling down close. “First time since…” “Yeah.” She didn’t need to say it. They all knew. His absence loomed larger than it should’ve for how little time they’d known each other, but it was unshakeable, that feeling that something was missing, and knowing who was missing, that didn’t make it easier. Maybe harder, actually. Sure felt harder.
If you see this, you're tagged!

I will forever be disappointed at the absolute lack of Mikey and Leo episodes in rise, I can literally only think of 2 off the top of my head, but I love the fact that they show the relationship in other, more subtle ways. What do I mean? I’m so glad you asked, MIKEY COPIES A LOT OF LEOS CATCHPHRASES AND MANNERISMS AND IT MEANS SO MUCH TO ME THANK YOU
Okay so. I agree with you 110% that we need more of Leo and Mikey. They have the sweetest relationship and I love the way Mikey mirrors Leo. He copied so much of his big brother and I hope to highlight that relationship soon.
However!
This ask for me thinking about which brothers got the most screen time. So I made this.
A comprehensive list of all the episode. Listed by what relationship is highlighted. If one stands out more then the others I have set them to the side as a focus.
All brothers
Origami Tsunami (1,2a) (focus on Leo leading)
Donnie's Gifts (1,2b)
Mascot Melee (1,5b)
Shell in a Cell (1,6a) (Raph vs Leo, Donnie vs Mikey)
Minotaur Maze (1,6b) (Leo focused)
Bug Busters (1,7) (Raph vs Leo leadership focus). (NOTE: the episode doesn’t play them against each other but more highlights the differences in their leadership/seeing the world)
The Longest Fight (1,8a)
Stuck on You (1,10a) (Raph leadership)(it highlights all the brothers but the episode does focus on Raph just a bit more as it is his plan)
Pizza Pit (1,11b) (Raph lead)
Smart Lair (1,12a) (Donnie focus)
Bullhop (1,14b)
Mind Meld (1,15a) (Donnie focused)
Sparring Partner (1,18b) (Raph focused)
Mystic Library (1,20a)
The Purple Game (1,20b) (Donnie focused)
Man VS. Sewer (1,21a) (Raph and Leo) (looks as savage Raph and Leo’s ability to lead)
The Mutant Menace (1,21b)
One Man's Junk (1,23a) (Raph and Leo vs Donnie and Mikey)
Jupiter Jim Ahoy! (1,24b)
Todd Scouts (2,2a)
Pizza Puffs (2,5b)
Sidekick Ahoy! (2,6a)
The Clothes Don't Make the Turtle (2,10b)
All brothers plus April
Mystic Mayhem (1,1)
War and Pizza (1,3a) (all brothers) (april focused)
Al Be Back (1,10b)
Snow Day (1,23b) (Raph, Leo, and Mikey vs Donnie, April, and Mayhem
Air Turtle (2,5a) (Leo focused)
All brothers and Splinter

The Fast and the Furriest (1,5a)
The Evil League of Mutants (1,13)
Late Fee (1,14a)
The Ancient Art of Ninja Hide and Seek (1,22b)
Flushed, but Never Forgotten (2,3a)
Hamato clan
Mrs. Cuddles (1,9b) (Raph focused)
Shadow of Evil (1,16)
Insane in the Mama Train (1,25)
End Game (1,26)
Many Unhappy Returns (2,1) (Leo focused)
Lair Games (2,3b) (Leo and Donnie)
Battle Nexus: New York (2,11)
E-Turtle Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2,12)
Shreddy or Not (2,13)
Anatawa Hitorijanai (2,14)
Rise (2,15)
Donnie and Mikey
Repo Mantis (1,4a)
Turtle-dega Nights: The Ballad of Rat Man (1,22a) (Splinter)
Raph and Leo
Hypno! Part Deux (1,8b) (April stars as well)
Leo and Mikey
The Gumbus (1,9a) (April as well)
You Got Served (1,19a)
Donnie and April
The Purple Jacket (1,11a)
Donnie vs. Witch Town (2,8b)
Mikey
Hot Soup: The Game (1,12b) (Cassie)
Nothing But Truffle (1,15b)
Leo

The Hidden City Job (2,6b)
Bad Hair Day (2,9b)
Donnie
Breaking Purple (2,4a)
Raph
Raph's Ride-Along (2,8a)
April focused
Operation: Normal (1,18a) (Leo and Donnie)
Cloak and Swaggart (1,24a)

Villain spotlight

Warren & Hypno, Sitting in a Tree (1,17b)
How to Make Enemies and Bend People to Your Will (1,19b) (Draxum and Cassie)
Goyles, Goyles, Goyles (2,2b) (origin story)
Mikey and Draxum
Repairin' the Baron (2,4b) (plus Raph)
Mystery Meat (2,7b) (April)
Hidden City's Most Wanted (2,9a) (Splinter)
You will notice that Leo gets the most solo episodes by himself. Normally this is when he is with Señor Hueso and we see Leo growing into himself
Donnie has a lot of episodes focused on him but he can’t stand on his own his story is driven by his relationships
Raph is almost never alone and has one episodes where it is just him and one of his brothers. But it focuses on them helping April not thei relationship to each other.
Donnie and Leo never have an episode alone! They have the one where they are helping April but it isn’t focused on them and their relationship.
Raph and Leo never stand alone (we get two one when they are facing off and one where they are working together)
Mikey and Raph never get an episode (and we were going to get one!)
Raph and Donnie are never together (they have one episode where they play against each other and one where they are with each other) never a solo episode.
So while I agree we need more Mikey and Leo we also need more of all of them together and paired off. There was so much more this show could have done if they only had time.

Gonna take a moment to rave about my favorite monster romance authors at the moment. Lillian Lark and C.M. Nascosta! Pretty sure they lace their books with crack cause I can’t get enough of them! The romance is perfect, there’s fluff and filth, angst, action, sweetness and plenty of smut. And the monsters!!!!!! So many monsters! Kraken, witches, harpies, demons, lake monsters, werewolves, mothmen, minotaurs, elves, orcs, shadow kind, gargoyles, krampus, arachnes… it’s just…

The Illustrious Table of Contents
Archivist’s note: Entries are listed in the order they are listed in the manuals. Since I suspect the earlier manuals might be written before the seasons aired, any discrepancies in episode order vs manual order might be because of the manual order being the original order the episodes were planned to air, but I can’t of course confirm this.
I have marked episode numbers but have not marked season finales, as I’m not sure whether Nachtwacht had them (especially since the episodes aren’t connected with eachother through storyline). There are some seasons where I suspect that the last episode listed was the season finale due to certain threat level evaluations within the manuals, but in that case The Silent Twins would be season 3’s last episode, which isn’t correct; The Metentis was the last episode of season 3, and the Metentis simply isn’t season finale material. I have made sure to also include episode titles for the entry names that don’t match up with the episode name.

Monster High Gen 3 movie review
I YOHOHOED IT. FOUND THE LINK but I’m not gonna link it here unless asked. I don’t support the director but I did want to watch it since there’s a lot of hate, which makes me want to give it a chance at the least for the actors. This is just my personal opinion, as an og fan since the age of 5 when I found Draculaura at target. This series is part of what inspired me as a goth. But since this is for the children of today, I want to view it with neither a positive of negative bias. Anyways, I’m just a kid with opinions that you can disagree with.
no matter the quality, it is a reboot. When I was little I saw my little pony turn the femme fashionista Rainbow Dash I knew into the jock we know today. I was only pissy for a week because I didn’t find them to even slightly the same character. I still don’t, even after I became a fan and eventually grew out of it (not that I think I’m too old, I’m just not a huge mlp fan anymore). Reboots often turn characters unrecognizable for better or worse. It’s a normal result. If your pissed about that beyond “we were asking for a gen 1 revival and don’t trust Mattel saw a corporation” I suggest you go mountain hiking or something. Anything to get your mind off it because you are clearly in need of it.
main takeaway; I don’t hate it.
it reminds me of the boy who cried werewolf, another Nickelodeon Halloween movie that, like the og monster high, i grew up on. The musical numbers are okay. They’re pop songs which aren’t my taste, but they aren’t horrific and “out of the dark” or whatever its called, is pretty good. The background music is reminiscent of old 90s Halloween movies.
THE COSTUMING ISNT AS SHIT AS EVERYONE SAYS IT IS. Seriously, if you see a highschooler you know they dress like shit. Heck, I am that highschooler half the time. Even in full goth attire I’m limited, I’m seventeen and not allowed to wear fishnets. fishnets! They don’t look horrid, just slightly cheap.
here’s some things I dislike
clawdeen and Deuce have a half assed romance. We all knew this, but like, they don’t even commit to it anyways, and cleo (who he broke up with pre movie) still has better chemistry with both of them. I feel people make too big a deal of lesbian clawdeen (she’s had male love interests, it’s simply a headcanon beloved by the creator as well. That being said she does have in g1 tons of lesbian coding so it’s still a slap in the face).
it opens with clawdeen in a skate park, but has absolutely no reason to be like that. Was it to make her relatable? By pulling “sick skateboard moves dawg” or something? It’s not a new character trait either, never comes up again. She could’ve been going for a walk or run and it would’ve hit the same notes.
Clawdeen has no personality. It’s been stripped of her to make her relatable and failed miserably. I can’t name an interest or anything.
draculaura has a personality, but with making her pure goth (a decision I actually love as she was originally a Victorian goth) they’ve taken away her bubbliness. She’s not horrid, but it’s sad, because it was an opportunity to have a bubbly goth vampire witch.
Komos is named for a Greek Satyr but is meant to be a Minotaur “Hyde monster” hybrid?? As someone familiar with Komos, boy satyr in the retinue of his father the god Dionysos, there were… so many better possibilities.
Hyde is not an active part of the movie, but he’s got a huge influence. Hyde is intended to be a monster, with Jekyll as his human half. As a fan of the strange case of doctor Jekyll and mister Hyde, it’s not the worst representation of the character, as they seem to be one and not another boring split personality, but! Hyde is clearly meant to be perceived mainly as a monster, but in the novella he’s mainly a chemical induced transformation that results in Jekyll being… a horrid dumbass. Hyde is also depicted as muscular despite his real description being of a young and hairy scrawny short man. As a Jekyll/Hyde kinnie (jk) I do not like how my trash goblin doctor gets portrayed and am taking it out on this.
ghoulia speaks English. I’m ready to punt whoever did that. Like she’s kinda charming but just… it was always important that she seems to be foreign language or nonverbal, you know?
monsters that were marketed as more prevailing were just there or background characters. It’s just really clickbait-y.
that being said
I liked witch Draculaura. She’s cute in a different way than Draculaura. Dracula puts pressure on her to be the best vampire ever (though never spoken), and hates human magic, which is witchcraft. And yeah, that makes sense as witchcraft is historically a thing of humans in close relation to the supernatural and or divine. Vampires and witches canoncially have an ongoing war between them, it’s a miracle he allows her to practice in the end. She’s socially isolated and cold in part because not only does she fail to live up to her father’s expectations academically, but also indulges in activities he hates. And her other outfits look significantly better than than the promotional image thank god.
Clawdeen has a very sweet relationship with her father, which keeps her from turning into a full monster when given the chance, because he’s important to her and she doesn’t want to erase his side of her. He’s scared for her but allows her to go to monster high because it’s what she needs. They have such a good relationship and it’s nice to see.
Cleo simply seemed to go through the old “mean girl to friend” in the same way she did originally. She’s done pretty well in general. She trained under the magic god Heka while alive, and she does her best to help in the climax, getting over her biases.
Lagoona is Cleo’s bestie here, but she’s not done wrong whatsoever. She’s there to defend Cleo when she thinks that deuce has left her emotionally hurt and shows worry and compassion in her few scenes, in which she is never the focus… that’s not great but. She also has an accent still, just not Australian. So she doesn’t get to have that moment where she says-
Frankie is literally. The greatest. They’re the absolute highlight in my opinion. I feel they still embody the Frankie from the other versions, but with new aspects. They’re made of famous people in both mind and body (freida Kahlo’s hands, Shakespeare’s liver, the heart of some farmer, etc.) they have a bunch of knowledge but are socially unaware of how to interact. They’re autism coded!! It makes me happy! I too, am autistic!!! They also have the best jokes and it’s totally worth pirating to watch, just for them💖. You just know that if Og Frankie met them, she’d immediately get along with them.
Abby and holt play football with a foot in one scene. And then talk about eating it. There’s a lot of cannibalism jokes, but the football one was funny (Frankie again, is a huge reason why).
It’s not great. It’s very flawed. One might say it’s bad. But whatever kid who watches this, is probably able to enjoy it. I did, in spite of it being so unrecognizable from the series of my childhood. I hope the show will be better though. (I also hope holt’s adopted there)
I don’t think it’s worth ALL the hate it gets. It’s not brilliant, but if you’re not supporting the dickwad director I think it’s worth killing time for.

Genre: Historical Fiction, Mythology, Retellings
Rating: 4 out of 5
Trigger Warning: Rape, Sexual assault, Pregnancy, Death
Summary:
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child--neither powerful like her father nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power: the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts, and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus. But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from or with the mortals she has come to love.
*Opinions*
You would have had to be completely under a rock to not have heard about Circe or The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller in the past couple of years. I wanted to put some space between all the hype around the novels and reading them so that I would be able to enter it with a clear head to give a fair review. However, so many lists have Circe have it as a great stand-alone or a book that made them cry that the hype never really died down. I enjoyed my time with Circe well enough, but I have to be completely honest, I don’t get the hype.
Before you get out the pitchforks or have me lashed to a rock for my liver to be plucked out every day, I am not saying I didn’t like it. The prose was beautiful and you felt the years of loneliness and abuse that Circe faced while everyone else told her story to the world. However, this book wasn’t life-changing for me, which it seemed to be for just about everyone else. I can’t even pinpoint anything I didn’t like about it, it was just fine. I loved the retelling and reimagining of well-known Greek myths, such as how Odysseus was portrayed. However, I felt as if the story flowed over me the same way that the years flowed over Circe, ultimately not leaving a mark.
The beginning of the novel before Circe’s exile was the most interesting to me though it was the hardest to read. It isn’t as if the Greeks portrayed their gods as kind and caring, but the casual cruelty and the self-centered nature were interesting to read. Miller did a good job of showing that even early on, Circe was different, set apart from the rest even before she realized she had magic. Circe wanted to be kind and to lessen suffering. Even those that she hurt out of jealousy, Scylla and the others, she carried that guilt with her until it could be undone. The novel is about finding yourself even when the world continually tells you who you should be, and that is never clearer than Circe’s difference from her immortal family. I think that Miller showed that it is not easy to be one's self, but if you find the right people, it can become easier.
Part of the reason that I wasn’t taken with the novel is that I read The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec first. They are very similar, witches that are punished for their magic and attempting to carve their own happiness out of the world that is cruel century after century. I felt more connected with Angrboda and her story of love and loss and revenge. I can’t tell you what the difference is, and maybe the only one is that I read The Witch’s Heart first, but I was expecting the same emotional hit from Circe and I just didn’t get that.
And…that’s all I really have to say about the novel. It is beautifully written and therefore I am giving it four stars, but unless it grows in my feelings, it isn’t a book I think I’ll be buying to add to my shelves.

some more MH threeboot/G3 thoughts
oh yeah...why didn’t i just default to the G# system to differentiate? i came from MLP and TF to start with...
anywhos, those character posters for the movie huh?
Clawdeen: still with the glasses...she’s looking less Howleen i give, the use of the darker purple helps...though she does kinda look like the Disney Zombies werewolf chick (from my very limited peripheral knowledge)
Draculaura: why is she a spellcaster? that was never part  of what her deal was. if you wanted magic why not use a witch? why make the vampire a witch? i give that the split hair can work, but aside from that...also yeah the split hair; that’s the Bratz witch doll not MH
Frankie: seems fine i guess, except it seems like they are implying she has forehead bolts?
Deuce: doesn’t seem snakey or sk8rboi enough, also those glasses have no tint and thus would fail in their job to stop his stone gaze
Cleo: again she seems fine, but is in the dress like the doll leak...and she’s golden skinned instead of mummy wrapped...ok...getting the 90s Mummy vibes...
Heath; oh wow i did not expect Heath. i honestly figured it’d be Holt and/or Jackson. so that’s a cool surprise. his hair isn’t spikey enough, but eh that’s semantics
Lagoona: uh...i wanna say no? it seems like they leaned too hard into “mermaid” instead of “sea monster”. her hair is rainbow pastel, and she’s not blue. it’s not a bad design for a mermaid girl, but it’s not Lagoona
Bloodgood: ok this is another surprise. kinda digging the changes on her.
Jackson i mean Sparky i mean Dexter i mean new OC guy: uh...ok i know they’d be making new characters, and adding in another teacher (or student teacher because he honestly looks the same age as the kids) is perfectly fine, but...he looks like Jackson with horns on his head...i think? what even is he? generic demon? satyr? can’t be a minotaur...his name “Komos” doesn't give any hint i can think of

something i really love bout Danielewski's books is the use of color, not only by using it to signify a place/character using a color, but also text related to the place/character being the same color as well.
yeah, that doesn't make sense. elaboration in the Read More, but if ya don't wanna be spoiled on House of Leaves and/or The Familiar, then do not read any further.
Ok so first, House of Leaves. The first thing that comes to mind when I talk about color motifs AND House of Leaves is, obviously, gonna be having the word house be blue.
Out of every instance of the word house showing up in the book, only one instance has the word house be black. thanks to that, the readers start associating the House with the color blue; for example, the blue square framing the long rambling of what the House doesn't have. in general, seeing the word blue in the book makes one think of the house (though are are examples of blue being used that oppose the house). Even the instance of the house being black has the reader associate black with the house and its dark labryinth and ashen hallways.
in addition to blue, red text shows up as well: when it talks about the minotaur. and this isn’t just the word minotaur being red: any text pertaining to it will both be red and crossed out. example below:
Tumblr media
like with blue and house, we start associating red with the minotaur thanks to the text about it being red. and so when Johnny tells the story of meeting Johnnie and using the word red to describe her and how unsettling she is, we automatically think of the minotaur. the fact that Johnnie seems to be an aspect of Johnny (almost same name and everything) helps connect the minotaur and Johnny as well; how Johnny starts becoming more obsessive and violent, culminating on the beatdown of Gdansk man.
there is one more colored text that is important in House of Leaves: purple. this colored text only appears three times, and the first two are within the cover and the very first few pages: A Novel and First Edition (the latter of which is crossed out). unlike the former two colored text, we are unsure what the color purple has to do with the book. by the time we get to the last instance of purple text, which is also near the last of Johnny's sections, we understand: Johnny seems to associate the color purple with his mother Pelafina, best seen when he sees purple flowers and starts to hyperventilate (according to his mother, she tried to strangle Johnny as a child). this is confirmed when Pelafina and her letters note that she had long purple nails when she was first admitted (this was when she describes the strangling). of course, with the first two instances of purple text, the theory that it was Pelafina that wrote House of Leaves, but i aint here to theorypost.
Now onto one of my favorite book series: The Familiar. notably, unlike House of Leaves, the use of colored text is benign. the word familiar is allways colored pink, whether or not it's part of a bigger word (familiarity) or being used in different contexts (the title pertains to a familiar a witch has, but in the series it's used as the adjective). notably there ARE some instances of the word house being blue as well, but there are much fewer compared to HoL.
What TF DOES have though is interesting. see, there’s nine total narrators in this book, which is a lot and kinda makes it hard to keep track of their own personal stories (only three of them actually intersect on a daily basis). to compensate for this, each of the narrators’ sections have a colored tag, pictured badly below:
Tumblr media
can’t tell if picture bad bc it just looks better when reading it or bc ive had the books for about 2 years, but as you can see, there are colored tags, each pertaining to a specific narrator. when the colored tag changed to another on the next page, you know you’ve switched to another section w a new narrator.
for example, Xanther has a pink tag, Luther has a black tag, jingjing has a blue tag, and so on so forth. Xanther specifically is important: since both the word familiar and Xanther are associated with pink, that signifies to the reader that Xanther is important, and this is correct as she’s the central protagonist to the main storyline.
this carries on into mentions of colors in the story, perhaps even moreso compared to HoL. whenever a narrator's color shows up in another narrator's section, we automatically think about the former narrator and any possible connections to the latter. for example, Xanther is often described with clothes of both pink and black, the latter color making us think of Luther and the fact they seem to foil each other (not to mention Xanther has a black banner underneath; more on that on another post). conversely, in the first volume Luther ends up with a pink umbrella, making us think about Xanther (ironically enough, this is when Luther says "You think a color's gonna tell me who I am?" which is, well, wrong).
idk how to end this beyond the fact I wish colored text would be used more in other novels, no matter the genre it's just realllly good.
