Evening is just around the corner but the sky is still high enough over those clouds on the horizon that there’s warmth on your skin, golden and marinated. You’re sitting on the stone steps of your front garden and watching the waves crash on the white sand in the distance, because it’s warm enough that it’s still worth it to be here, letting the breeze weave your fingers.

Not many people are around at this time of night, the world is peaceful and still, but that’s why your head turns, in curiosity and focus, at the sound of wooden sandals on the sidewalk ahead, a heavy thwacking of aimless stumbling, the horizon bends with a silhouette of a boy walking down the cobble path and looking ahead, dazed, smiling over nothing.

You lock eyes. Large, brown, thoughtless and friendly eyes. You’re captivated and for some reason your heart folds in on itself in a way you can’t quite explain. His features are delicate, oddly beautiful in an unlikely sort of way, a hazel tan and greasy black hair blowing gently in the wind beneath an old, frayed straw hat. He looks like he’s been out at sea for a very long time, but although weathered he’s incredibly youthful, an older teenager, you think. He’s dressed like a pirate, you know this look well, they come into taverns drunk on cheap rum and leer at the young girls, picking fights, you didn’t think there were many good pirates left these days but something about this boy is so profoundly different. He’s not like anyone you’ve ever seen before, in some way you can’t place.

You watch him, keenly interested now, chin resting on your hands. Maybe this is why he comes up to you, crouching so close in front of you, no shyness present in his face. There’s an old scar under his left eye, tight and pale with age.

“Hiya!” His voice is raspy and loud. “You seen my crew anywhere?”

“Your crew? Mm, I don’t know. I haven’t seen anyone come by here for a while.” You find yourself talking differently than usual, not like you normally do with strangers, it’s something in your voice, your annunciation, that catches you off guard.

“Aw, really? There’s a lady with orange hair and this guy and he’s got green hair and three swords and-” He stops in the middle of a frustrated gesticulation when he sees your blank eyes. “Mm. Ok, I’ll go look in town.”

And just like that he gets up to leave. You’re saddened, but you find your words catching in your throat. Don’t leave.

But he pauses a few paces away, turning back after a brief consideration. “Hey, ya got any food? I’m real hungry.”

You look up, breath hitching. Yes, yes, this is something you can do. “Oh, yeah, I just baked some bread, actually. I’ll go get it if you wanna wait here.”

“Ooh! Sounds good. Hey, thanks!” he calls to you warmly, turning back, trotting to your front steps as you go inside.

The bread basket has been cooling on the windowsill, the crust is golden and steam wafts through the room and wets your hands as you pick it up to bring it to him. But when you come outside again he isn’t on your steps, or in your garden, you look around to find him but he isn’t anywhere, not until you step into the road and look over the rock embankment.

There’s the boy, he’s sitting in the white sand and playing with rocks, stacking them in lopsided towers with great intent. You smile when you see him. He isn’t gone. So you climb onto the beach and come to him, he grins casually, like you had been there all along, and his eyes light up when you set the bread in front of him.

“Ahh! This looks soo good!” Before his words are finished he’s already eating messily, he doesn’t care about the sand on his hands, he’s so focused.

You sit by him. You lean in, admiring his face, finally speaking, “I’m [name], by the way.”

“I’m Monkey D. Luffy!” he proclaims with enthusiasm, still not looking up. “It’s good to meet ya!” And he goes back to eating, as if this simple greeting has made you best friends and now everything is solved, but that name is familiar somehow and you like him so much already and you need to know more.

“Are you a pirate?” you ask with a tilted head.

“Mhm!” Luffy says through a mouthful of bread, “and I’m gonna be king of ‘em!”

“Pirate king, huh?” You raise your eyebrows, you’re charmed by him.

“Mm! Do you like the sea, [name]?” You feel like he’s been shifting closer to you, you hear him all around you now, his chewing remains consistent, loud.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s one of the prettiest things in the world,” you say honestly, the waves glitter in front of you, an infinite land-sky, glitter on pearl on galaxy-blue. Sunspots, stars, they twinkle on its surface.

“It’s real fun to be a pirate,” he chirps, finishing the bread and turning to you, his smile is gleaming and his voice is soft but gleeful.

“Yeah? What kinda stuff do you do out there?” You just want to hear him speak more, you realize.

“Ah man, everything! We go on tons of adventures, and we sing, and we get to make new friends wherever we go… and we look for treasure! We’re tryna find the One Piece!”

He returns your enchanted stare. He makes it all sound so easy, taming the cruel sea. His chest rises and falls, breaths heavy with excitement, his hands palm at the sand and hey, he’s really moving closer now, isn’t he? His eyes are so sparkly, it’s impossible to look away from him.

“Wanna skip rocks with me?” he asks before you have time to reply. He’s distracted so easily, reaching happily for his little tower, weighing the smooth gray stone in his hand.

Aren’t you looking for your crew? you want to ask. But you can’t let go of him yet, this mysterious, perfect boy. So instead you say, “sure, if you can teach me. I’m not great at it.”

“You live by the sea and ya can’t skip rocks?” Luffy laughs at you, tossing his stone into the sea with a snap of his wrist, it bounces once, twice, spinning in the air, a battle to fly from the ocean’s hunger, before it’s pulled beneath, disappearing into the surf.

Your hands touch as he gives you a rock, perfectly round and smooth, warmed from his palm. You throw it but your arm falters, it falls with a splash, gone before it could fly, a ripple of a memory left on the water, nothing more. Luffy laughs at you again.

“Nah, that ain’t it, you gotta flick your arm and keep it straight.” He moves close enough where you can feel his breath on your skin, hot and thick. “Mm,” he murmurs in your ear, voice low and ripe, “like this…”

He’s behind you, leaning against you, taking your arm and positioning you for the right sort of throw. His skin feels strange, like warm rubber, but your mind is so clouded with him, with his musky, overpowering scent and the tickle of his hair, you don’t notice much of anything. By accident, for the briefest moment, his salt-dried lips brush your shoulder, this is like lightning within you. But for Luffy this is nothing, it means nothing to him to be this close, it’s just what seems so natural.

You throw again, a smaller rock this time, aided by his hands on your arm. You’re so dizzied by his touch and you expect it to be even worse this time but to your surprise the rock skips once, a single heartbeat.

“See! Ya did it!” Luffy shouts joyfully, slapping you on the back, a little too hard, before pulling you in for a hug.

This is the best hug you’ve ever had. So tight, so warm, he buries his head in your shoulder, his weight nearly knocks you into the sand. You grab him back, by pure instinct, you want this closeness never to leave you.

But in an instant he’s pulled away again, unfazed by his own affection. He adjusts his hat carefully, looking back at the water, face content. He throws and skips one last stone.

“Mh, my crew’s prolly looking for me, huh?” Luffy stands up, dusting off his jeans, tilting his head at you. And then he offers you a hand, pulling you up with him, you’re face to face again and he places a hand firmly on your shoulder and says, “you can come if you want.”

“Huh?”

“On my crew. You can come be a pirate with me!” And again he has that way of saying things so simply. He doesn’t know you, how could he be so sure? But in his eyes you feel so incredibly, impossibly known.

He turns around, ready to walk away down the beach into the dying sunlight, and he turns to you once more and says, “you gonna be here tomorrow?”

“Yeah, I will!” you call to him, and he flashes you a broad smile, a thumbs-up, before running away into the horizon. You know he’ll come back.

Romance isn’t even in your mind. You just have this intense feeling for him, a certain kind of instantaneous love that goes deeper than any of that. You feel bonded, like you’ve never felt before, and you don’t know how it happened. You just stand there in the sand, dazed and misty eyed. You want so desperately to see him again. Deep breaths, calm your body, tonight you’ll have time to dream about what you’ll say.

You could see the world with him. You want to right now, very badly, so why not? Maybe it is that simple.

Sure! The turnout was a bit smaller than my usual group due to a bunch of Adult Scheduling Conflicts, but I honestly prefer DMing for smaller groups anyway. This was session zero, so it was mostly just establishing lore and rolling up our characters.

We went over the lore of my homebrew setting. We’re doing an urban fantasy set in a film noir-style fantasy city - built vertically into the walls of a massive sinkhole. The economic boom caused by the town’s mithral mines have turned it into a cultural melting pot, populated by diasporas of elves, orcs, drow, humans, etc. It has also attracted its fair share of organized crime, such as the powerful elvish mob known as the Gabbro Family. The players are part-time private eyes who own Deepwell Detective Agency, a small detective agency in the depths of the city, where the sinkhole’s walls cast the streets into perpetual twilight and the Gabbro Family rules with an iron fist.

We rolled up some characters! (We’re using Pathfinder as our system for this one, ‘cause I like it the best.)

Jericho is a drow witch who’s a young student at the city’s college of magic. They're accompanied by their familiar, a tophat wearing hedgehog named Hazel, and their imaginary friend reality-challenged friend Impy. After reading tons of mystery novels, they aspire to be a Detective Conan-style kid detective. But their sheltered upbringing in the upper levels of the city has left them naive and unprepared for the realities of being a private eye.

Homes is a monkey-goblin investigator who traveled to this city looking for adventure and new experiences, but has since fallen into the mundane routine of doing construction-related odd jobs. A dexterous and handy little guy who’s good at building things, he built the Deepwell Detective Agency’s headquarters and the other players pay him rent to use the place. He insists he’s just their landlord, but as the cleverest of the group he often gets caught up in solving mysteries with them.

Perdita is an aasimar sorcerer who runs a simple tailoring business in the lower levels of the city. Few people know about her past as a thief, but she once had ties to the Gabbro Family, who took her in and raised her after she was abandoned as a child. After being caught and forced to work with the police for a while, the Gabbro Family disowned her as a failure and a traitor. Her past and ties to the criminal underworld will come in handy when it comes time to solve some crimes.

With what little time we had left after all that, the characters interacted and got to know each other a bit! They solved a small mystery, helping a little girl find her missing friends - and eventually discovering that these “friends” were bullies who had purposefully ditched her. Homes gave them what they deserved by scaring them and stealing their lunch money. Now the players are ready to go out into the city and SOLVE SOME MYSTERIES!

Incredibly random thought, but: I gave Hazel curly hair because I always wanted curly hair, but it turns out I actually *have* curly hair very close to the style I gave her, which means that if she actually knew how to take care of her hair it would be even more curly...

All this to say that basically Hazel has no clue how to maintain her curls which gives me a lot of creative space for hair-based descriptions lmfao

A child’s fate hang in times hand

“AAAAAHHHHHHH!”

It was a warm spring midday, when a loud crash was here on the deck, smoke covered whatever it was. Some of the crew prepared for battle, as coughing could be heard. The smoke clearing around the ‘thing’ the crew were about to jump into action, there stood a kid?

“Okay…what the hell?” Nami said putting away her staff and walking up to the kid, but suddenly the kid threw a right hook, which she narrowly dodged, the force of which felt like the air itself was trying to knock her out, it’s fast yet familiar…? “Stay away!! you-you jerk!” The kid said with a look of panic in their eyes.

“…”

Seconds felt like hours as the kid realized who they had almost hit. “Auntie Nami???!????” The kid screamed, falling to the floor and scooting away from her. “I’m so so so so sorry!!” The kid starting to tear up, bowing down as soon as possible. A loud crash is heard as the force of the bow made their head accidentally make a small hole on the deck. “Oops…?” The kid said scooting back a little further.

Their notable pink hair striking against the white shirt and blue shorts they were wearing. “I didn’t know how far I skipped back or forward!” The kid lifting up their head revealing big hazel-brownish eyes and teal ascot around his neck. The kid had major baby face so it was kinda hard to pin point their age. ‘Pink hair…?’ Luffy thought. “Wait…Auntie?!” Nami said in a slightly shrill voice.

Another look of realization hits their face as they stand back up. Looking puzzled, they started to circle Luffy. It took a few moments before the kid piped up again. “Wait…what do you think about papa?” The kid asks with suspicion in their eye. The hell do they mean ‘papa’ Nami thought. Robin looking on with amusement clear as day on her face. “…How should I know???” Nami yelled, confused at the kid’s words. she doesn’t even know the kid, why would she know or care? With a smirk the kid flipped into the air, landing on a standing barrel. Stumbling slightly before gain back their balance.

“I am Monkey D. Ace and I’m gonna be the best marine in the whole world!!!” The kid screamed at the top of their lungs. “And one day I’m gonna surpass my dad, the king of the pirates, Monkey D. Luffy!!” The kid then jumped down and sniffs the air. getting a look only one family is known for. ‘Oh my it really is Luffy’s’ Robin thought, containing a giggle that was surfacing.

“…”

The crew just staring at them. ‘There’s no way in hell that Luffy know how to even make a kid’ most of the crew thought. “…So…y’got any grub? I’m hungry as heck!” Ace said with a smile wider than a bus. ’Oh my god that’s definitely Luffy’s’ Franky thought. He was about to ask a question to the kid but-

“Huhhhhhh?????????” Luffy said with a shout, whipping right by the kid. “I’m your WHAT?????” The kid shuffling back a few steps. He opens with a sigh.

“Wow, I knew you were dumb back then but I didn’t know you were this dumb”

“That doesn’t answer my question kid?!”

“You’re my dad…does that answer it?”

“Ummmm, but I don’t have a kid???”

“You do in the future”

“Oh…ok then”

Huhhhhhh??????

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN ‘OK THEN’ YOU ROCKS FOR BRAIN???!!!??” Nami said with anger in her eyes, hitting Luffy over the head. The ki-no Ace hit the deck and sought cover from Nami’s fury. Trying to sneak away Ace crawls right into Zoro’s shoes, finding a sword in their face. Ace pinching their nose ‘Oh right I forgot that uncle really didn’t like taking baths back in the day’

“Woah there uncle Zoro, you need to chill” Ace said nervously. “Uncle? Kid I don’t even know who you are” Zoro said an unreadable look in his eyes. “Wow…ok then…your not gonna be my favorite uncle anymore! How’s that!”

Ace standing up through not even coming up to zoro’s waist they sucker punching him where the sun don’t shine. Zoro falling over, Ace making a run for the kitchen. “Chi chi chi chi~ that what you get for underestimating me!” They said sticking their tongue out.

“That littl-“ just then sanji kicked the kitchen door open “Nami-swan~, Robin-chan~ I have new drinks I’d love for you to try~!!” He said in a loverboy daze. “Too slow auntie sanji!!” Ace dart straight for the fridge, opening heaven itself, but before they could start raiding the fridge—

BONK!!

“Ace…since you have these new powers we should really need some kind of code so you know when you are..”

“Don’t worry about it papa! I’m tough and smart enough to know what to do!”

“I know sweetheart but I feel better just in case, please for me?”

“Hmmmm…fine…”

The pink hair man whisper as Ace laugh. His smile is making the kid think that putting up with his paranoia worth it. A door slams as the dark haired man comes in with a few desserts already half-eaten. Ace would kill to have this last forever.

Coming back to their senses, Ace strains against the rope the were now tie up with. “So the little shits awake” said the voice who they recognized as zoro’s voice. They slowly opened their eyes seeing all of the strawhats looking down on them. A tear slips by without his consent. ‘Man I missed them already…it hasn’t even been that long’ Ace thinks then chastising themself for it. ‘How can I get out of this mess…’

‘Well shit…I guess I have to use plan 5d’ Ace thought, biting their lips, they sniffle “WAAAHHHHHHH!!! I WANT MY DADDY!!!” The (totally) fake tears falling down their face. “I DON’T KNOW YOU PEOPLE!!!!!! WAHHH!!!! HELP ME ANYONE!!!!!!” Usopp just tsked. He facepalms and gets on the kid’s level. His stare is stern yet kind, it reminds Ace of their papa.

“Give it up kid, that won’t work on us, so might as well give up” and not second later Ace stoped crying and just stared at Usopp. “You were always too good at seeing through my fake crying uncle Usopp” Ace said pouting. ‘And definitely only that and not the fact that uncle was always super kind and awesome’ Ace thinks to themself.

“Ok Usopp do your liar magic” Nami said with a sigh. She already too tired for this, one day where everything was gonna to be peaceful and pleasant. She even got Luffy to calm down for the day with meat, begging, and promises that she wasn’t planning on keeping. Usopp cleared his throat.

“Ok kid tell us your name”

“Ugh! You guys really don’t listen, huh??!! My names Monkey D. Ace! The future best marine in the world!!”

“Hmm, Ok how old are you Ace?”

“I’m seven but don’t underestimate me or else!!”

“…Who is your dad Ace?”

“Ughhhhhhh, I told you guys! It’s Luffy”

“Ok, last question…how are you here?”

“I ate the time time fruit and accidentally shot too far in the past…I just wanted to eat breakfast again”

“Okay…well if you need me I’ll be laying down” Usopp said in a weird daze trying to get to the barracks. ”Oh no you don’t! Where do you think your going?” Sanji said.

“Tell the kid to stop lying!!” He was clearly annoyed. “I can’t cause they aren’t lying” Usopp stated, looking in the middle of a internal conflict. “You guys think I would lie about this!?” There’s no way in hell!!” Ace was offended by the statement.

“Well…I knew that uncle Usopp was the smartest out of all of you but still…” Ace said even more annoyed than sanji. Robin giggled at the statement. “Oh are we now? Please enlighten us on what we don’t know little one”

They smiled wide with a hardy laugh to follow “Wow dad was right about you uncle robin…you’re so strange!” Ace smiles wider as the crew heard a snap of the rope.

“This is why papa says that all of the strawhats were weird! Chi chi chi chi~” the kid still sitting down on the floor. “You guys tied up a random kid because they were ‘suspicious’” Ace barley keeping their laughter under raps.

“Oi! How dare you call this beautiful lady weird! I punt you space you little devil!!” Sanji said his annoyance turning to anger. “Calm down auntie Sanji don’t worry about them…honestly I thought you’d be more insulted that I called uncle zoro over weird~” Ace trying to see how much they could push.

“…Why would care?????” Sanji questioned. “Cuz auntie you and him are marrie-oh shoot I shouldn’t have said that…forget about all of that will you?” Ace internally facepalming themselves. “Oh that’s Luffy’s alright..” Nami finally saying with a sigh.

Meanwhile, both Sanji and Zoro are in shock as still as a stone. Ace stands up and walks over to Nami. “Auntie Nami can I please have some food? I’m so so super hungry!!” And Just like that, a sleeping Luffy has awaken from his little nap.

“Food?! I’m super hungry!!”

“You and me both dad!”

“Sanji!! Cook us something quick!!”

“Ya auntie!!”

“…”

“…fine”

Sanji just sighed getting up and heading to the kitchen but stopping and turned with a serious look on his face starring in to Ace’s eyes. “If you really are from the future, tell me this and tell it loud…” he pauses to take a drag from his cigarette. “So….who is it?” Ace stares blankly.

“Who is what?” Taking another drag he yells. “WHO IS THE LOVELY LADY THAT THIS LUCKY BASTARD GETS WITH!!” Pointing to Luffy how was currently trying to drag Sanji in to the kitchen so he could start cooking.

“I d-don’t know…?” Ace said looking away and puffing out their cheeks. ‘Oh my god it really is Luffy’s kid…’ Everyone internally facepalming as the thought enters their minds like a car crashing into a signpost. “Ugh ‘I don’t know’ my ass kid!!” Sanji firm in place, looking like he was about to explode.

“I can’t tell or it might hurt the future!!!” Ace said smiling, looking on the verge of laughter. “WHAT DO YOU MEAN HURT THE FUTURE YOU LITTLE SHIT?!” Sanji’s eyes flamed with rage.

Continuing on with this fandom meme, this time for my long-time fandom that's been surprisingly more popular than I thought it would be, Saiyuki!

Send me a letter and I’ll tell you which character…

A: Is most attractive (to me): Honestly, this one tends to fluctuate a lot. It’s changed every time I’ve read or reread the manga as to which person I find most attractive, though let’s be real…they’re all attractive. This latest time around though, I was very, very much into Gojyo!

B: Gets bored the fastest: It’s a toss up between Goku and Gojyo. Gojyo is more of a quiet, lazy bored though as compared to Goku’s much more antsy, louder, and whinier bored.

C: Is the most open to cuddling: Gojyo craves physical touch. The reasons why are numerous and probably something he should discuss with a therapist, if only their world had those, but that physical contact? That act of just feeling someone against you, alive and real and wanting to be there with you? It’s something he would honestly go a little insane without. Cuddling and physical contact is a necessity for him, to the point he seeks it in random women he can pick up just to have it.

D: Fears death the most: Despite having so much power and control over it, or maybe because of that, Hazel has a proper fear of death, more so than any other character I could think of.

E: Is the most emotive: A ‘stupid monkey’, Goku rarely thinks about hiding what he’s thinking or feeling. Most of the time, he’s upfront and his emotions and reactions are somewhat easy to see or guess, especially so for those who know him well.

F: Is my favourite: All of the main four, to be honest, and Dokugakuji. They all kind of tie for the same place as there’s so much about each character that entertains and intrigues me and gets me to thinking and wondering. Purely to write about, I feel Gojyo edges everyone out though as he’s always come the most naturally to me to write for.

G: Has the greenest thumb: I feel like Yaone not only has a green thumb but genuinely enjoys plants and gardening. She’d definitely be a plant mama if she could and would have names for her plants and would hum or talk to them.

H: Trusts their horoscope the most: Lirin is quite superstitious that way, something the others make fun of her for.

I: Tends to idolize people they shouldn’t: While her reasoning is sound, and it’s not idolization but approval she craves, Lirin does have some issues in that area.

J: Tells the most dad jokes: Hakkai likes puns. Does that make him a dad? If so, he’d be okay with that. It’s better than everyone considering him the team mom! His puns are delivered so stealthily too, with the same serene expression he often wears, and he never explains the pun.

K: Is the most skilled in the kitchen: I hate giving the same answer over and over, but it really is Hakkai. He is a good cook and does honestly enjoy cooking for others.

L: Lies the most: Nii. It’s more half-truth or things that could vaguely be interpreted as true most of the time, just to give himself some leeway if anyone should accuse him but honestly, he’s perfectly content to lie and manipulate and actually enjoys doing so.

M: Is the biggest memer: If memes existed in the world of Saiyuki, I feel that all of Kougaiji’s group except for Kougaiji would be all into memes. And they’d constantly bombard Kougaiji with them because the poor man just does not understand them.

N: Needs way more attention from me: Honestly, thinking about it, the answer kind of surprised me but it’s definitely Kougaiji. I can count on one hand the number of times I think I’ve actually written anything for him, despite thinking that he’d be one of the most popular. Normally, it’s just the main four I write for, or their previous incarnations.

O: Has the most OCs of their own: I feel like Goku wins this one. He made up friends, people, stories to occupy his mind in those long years he spent alone because it was the only way to protect his mind.

P: Is the purest, most perfect cinnamon roll: Jeep. It’s Jeep because it sure as hell isn’t anyone else!

Q: Is the quickest to judge others: Sanzo is a judgmental asshole. I love him to death, but he’d probably judge me for even that.

R: Feels the most detached from reality: Reality? Nii could really stand to learn what that even is. I really don’t think he’s fully aware, living in his mind as much as he does, spinning and spiraling plans and plots…that and the man is insane. That’s about as far from reality as a mind can go.

S: Has the strongest spirit: There is not one single character among the main cast of characters who do not have strong spirits. They simply could not live if they didn’t.

T: Is the most terrifying: This is just for me personally, but Nii scares the ever-living shit out of me as a character. He’s crazy but such a smart crazy and it makes him dangerous beyond belief.

U: Is the most unapologetic for the way they live their life: All of the characters do. They’ve all made hard choices and been through a lot. They stick by their decisions; they live the lives they’ve chosen and give it all they have.

V: Is the best at video games: If video games existed, I really feel like both Hakkai and Sanzo would be insanely good gamers. With his pretty face and filthy mouth, I could actually see Sanzo becoming a popular Twitch streamer, only at the insistence of the others.

W: Watches the most anime: Again, assuming anime was a thing in their world…I feel it would have been Tenpou. He seems like he’d be all into many types of anime, but especially Shonen or gag anime, and would get really into a lot of fandoms.

X: Is the most xenial towards complete strangers: Hazel but only if those complete strangers are yokai or half yokai. Basically, anything along those lines and he thinks you’re trash to be wiped out.

Y: Yells the most: Sanzo, but to be fair, they normally give him a reason to yell at them.

Z: Gets the most overzealous over something others wouldn’t expect: Dokugakuji actually really likes poetry, especially haiku. While he sucks at writing, having horribly illegible handwriting, he enjoys spoken poetry and is pretty good at making them up himself when he’s in the right mood.
