The Best News of Last Week - November 28, 2023
🐑 - Why did Fiona the sheep become a mountaineer? She was tired of the "baa-d" jokes at sea level!
1. Pope Francis dines with transgender women for Vatican luncheon
Tumblr media
Pope Francis hosted a group of transgender women — many of whom are sex workers or migrants from Latin America — to a Vatican luncheon for the Catholic Church's "World Day of the Poor" last week.
The pontiff and the transgender women have formed a close relationship since the pope came to their aid during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they were unable to work. Now, they meet monthly for VIP visits with the pope and receive medicine, money and shampoo any day, according to The Associated Press.
2. New York just installed its first offshore wind turbine
Tumblr media
The first wind turbine installation at South Fork Wind, New York State’s first offshore wind farm, is complete.
The 130-megawatt (MW) South Fork Wind will be the US’s first completed utility-scale wind farm in federal waters.
3. Anonymous businessman donates $800k to struggling food bank
Tumblr media
But this Thanksgiving, a longtime prayer of food bank leaders was finally answered: an anonymous benefactor donated the full $800,000 they needed to move out of a facility they've long outgrown. That benefactor, however, preferred to stay anonymous.
"Very private company, really don't want attention," said Debbie Christian, executive director of the Auburn Food Bank. "It's a goodhearted person that just wants to see the work here continue, wants to see it expand."
4. Empowering woman saving hopes and mental health of suffering Ukrainian kids
Tumblr media
Kenza Hadij-Brahim is at the forefront of promoting Circle of Toys
Hadj-Brahim is helping to launch the Circle of Toys initiative. A project that provides Ukrainian children in need of some normality with preloved toys. This new initiative connects people with old toys they might otherwise throw away, with Ukrainian families in need who want to provide some comfort to their children in this distressing time.
Find Refuge said : “The endeavour is driven by a sincere purpose: spark joy, foster play, and bring a hint of normalcy back to the young lives in Ukraine.”
5. TWO LOST CITIES HIDDEN FOR CENTURIES WERE JUST DISCOVERED IN BOLIVIA
Tumblr media
Researchers have found these areas not only housed structures and pyramids but it has been uncovered that there were advanced irrigation systems, earthworks, large towns, causeways, and canals that cover miles.
Dr. Heiko Prümers from the German Archaeological Institute, who was also involved in the study comments that “this indicated a relatively dense settlement in pre-Hispanic times. Our goal was to conduct basic research and trace the settlements and life there. The research sheds light on the sheer magnitude and magnificence of the civic-ceremonial centers found buried in the forest”.
6. Sheep dubbed Fiona rescued from cliff in Scotland where she was stuck for more than 2 years
youtube
And at last, some positive climate news:
7. Three positive climate developments
Tumblr media
Heating
When the Paris Agreement was adopted, the global reliance on fossil fuels placed the world on a path towards a 3.5C rise in temperature by 2100. Eight years on, country commitments to reduce their carbon footprints have pulled that down slightly, putting the world on a path for a 2.5C to 2.9C by the end of the century.
Peak emissions
Annual greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change have risen roughly nine percent since COP21, according to UN data. But the rate of the increase has slowed significantly. Recent estimates by the Climate Analytics institute find global emissions could peak by 2024
Rising renewables
Three technologies—solar, wind and electric vehicles—are largely behind the improved global warming estimates since 2015.

Hi! May I request Crowley x reader in a fitting room? x3
Tumblr media
“Darling, won’t you come out and show me?” Crowley purred as he waited outside the fitting room.
Being with Crowley had shown you a life of elegance - and luxury shopping was a newfound activity. On your own, you would never consider getting a dress that cost as much as your monthly rent, but here you were. You ogled at the price tag attached to the article.
$2,500
You sighed, staring back in the mirror. To your own credit, the dress did suit you well, but somehow you still weren’t sure about it.
“I don’t know about this one,” you said softly.
Crowley’s voice was just beyond the thick velvet curtain that had given you some privacy. He slipped a hand around the edge of the curtain.
There was a slick flirtation in his tone, “Maybe I can give my input.”
You watched him enter the fitting room - your silence told him everything he needed to know. Crowley found you gorgeous wearing just about anything, or even nothing at all. The one issue he wanted to help you with was your self image. After endless months of shopping each week, you had a full walk-in closet full of new dresses, shirts, coats, skirts, and pants to don. At times, it could be a little too much.
But this outfit was special. Your anniversary with the King of Hell was approaching, and you’d both insisted on sporting a new look for the occasion. That pressure was precisely why you couldn’t decide how you felt about this dress. Was it good enough for him?
The demon’s eyes found your backside first, a smirk tugging at the his lips. Crowley reached out a tentative hand, grazing your waistline as he admired the way it hugged your curves. He let out a low hum as his hands roamed toward your ass.
“Crowley, I’m serious. I don’t know if… if it’s good enough,” you admitted, but refusing to move his hands. They wandered further - up your tummy, sweeping out away from your chest, to your shoulders. Crowley scanned you in the mirror, his eyes more analytical this time.
“I would share my thoughts. But, they wouldn’t be appropriate.”
You smacked him lightly, “I mean how I look while clothed, pervert.”
Crowley chuckled in reply, looking back into your eyes in the mirror ahead of you.
He leaned toward your ear, “You look good enough to eat.”
Laughing softly, you glanced to the floor for a moment. Your cheeks had flushed to a pale pink at his flirtation, somewhat changing your mind on the dress. Surely if his hands were already roving over you, it would be a great choice.
“In fact… I think we should test something.”
You looked at him quizzically, cocking an eyebrow at him back in the mirror. Crowley gave your hips a gentle squeeze, grinding his own into your ass. You let out a soft whine, head falling back against his shoulder.
“What are we testing?” your voice had hushed with the heat pooling between your thighs. Crowley gave your ass a firm squeeze before he lifted your dress, painfully slow, up your thighs.
“Well, kitten,” he began, peppering your neck with kisses. “I need to see if it looks even better like this.”
Crowley pressed a hand to your lower back, coaxing you to bend at the waist in front of him. The dress had perfectly accentuated every curve the King loved - from the small of your waist, to your supple ass now pushed against his crotch. Images flowed through his mind a mile a minute. Hell, he could take you right here.
It’s not like anyone would say anything, anyways. They wouldn’t dare make a remark against the King of Hell, or his beloved.
Your breathing labored as he ground into you once again. His erection greeted you through the layers of fabric, an incessant teasing of what he could swiftly deliver to you.
“Let’s see,” Crowley cooed, hitching the dress past your hips and bunching around your middle. The King lowered himself to his knees, eyes keen on your ass and thighs. He spread your ass to find your clothed sex, admiring the wetness that soaked your panties, the semi-transparency showing him an outline of your slick folds.
He planted a kiss on your ass, moving closer toward your pussy. You shuddered against him, though he now held you steady with a firm hand on the front of your thighs.
“I think I’ll take you just like this,” Crowley whispered, his breath hot against your core. You ground backward against him, planting your ass firmly against his face. He let out a low chuckle while he hooked a finger at the waistband of your underwear, tugging them down masterfully to your ankles.
Without warning, Crowley’s tongue dove between your folds, moving steadily against your throbbing clit, swirling and sucking to draw out those sweet noises he loved. You fought back a moan, biting your lip while you watched him in the reflection - crouched, both hands now scouring your exposed thighs while his tongue worked on you. A high-pitched whine fell past your lips when Crowley replaced his tongue with a finger, dipping smoothly into your entrance.
A moment passes without any movement. You whine again, now bucking your hips on the single digit. Crowley bit gently into your ass, finally curling his finger downward to stroke your sweet spot, earning another soft moan in reply.
His voice rumbled against your skin, “I think you’ll be even prettier in this while I’m taking you from behind. Don’t you agree?”
You nodded dumbly, looking back at him. Crowley met your eyes, half-lidded with lust.
“Look at yourself, pretty girl. I’ll take care of the rest.”
Easing into him, Crowley guided a second finger into you, curling in sync with the first. The added size stretched you slowly around his fingers. Heat roiled in your aching cunt, walls fluttering as he picked up the pace. His knuckles crashed against you as he deepened his angle, your slick coating his fingers and down his palm. The lewd sounds coming from your pussy were nothing short of blasphemous. Mixed now with your drawn out moans, Crowley smiled at you in the mirror while you struggled to keep your eyes trained on your own face, now completely overrun by pleasure.
“That’s a good girl. My beautiful, darling girl.”
The praise left you shuddering around his fingers when your orgasm took you over. Your back arched into his touch, then doubled over as the shockwaves of the climax coursed through your tight cunt. Crowley’s pace slowed, but remained deep, not letting you catch a breath for a single moment.
Your plea came out as a pathetic moan, “Crowley, this is going to ruin the dress.”
“We’re just breaking it in, sweetness. Besides, it’s yours anyway.”
His fingers struck your g-spot once again, bringing out a soft cry from you. Crowley slowed his pace and removed his fingers, locking eyes with you in the mirror as he licked his fingers of your slick, moaning at the taste. He stood and positioned himself behind you, hard cock pressed firmly against your ass. Your hips bucked backward on instinct to give yourself more friction.
Rhythmically, he rolled his hips into you, easing his erection against your sex, and gasping in admiration as your expression changed in the mirror.
“Crowley,” you whispered, “please.”
The King replied with a small tsk tsk tsk, looking down at your ass pressed against him.
“My love, when we’re alone like this, you know what to call me. I suggest you correct yourself.”
Your eyes widened as you realized your mistake. Calling him by his name was a pathetic effort to remind him that this was not the time, nor place, for this. But, if Crowley decided that this risk was worth it, then you would follow his lead.
“Sir,” you replied; Crowley’s head snapped up, staring you down darkly, “I need you.”
He hummed contently, his hands reaching for his belt. You heard the metal clinking together before his pants shoved halfway down his thighs. A heavy cock slapped against your ass, making you hitch a breath. Crowley gripped the base of his length and eased the thick head into your folds, gliding over your swollen clit.
You let out a wanton moan; the King smiled at you in the mirror before he lined himself up with your entrance, aching with anticipation. Crowley gripped your chin and directed your attention to him as he slowly eased into you. The two of you sighed while his cock stretched you out, up until he bottomed out in your warm cunt.
Crowley began to thrust, though slow and drawn-out at first, and finding a steady pace. The noises from before, when his fingers had ravaged your insides, were nothing in comparison. Surely, if there was anyone within earshot, they’d have heard you.
The wet thwack of his hips crashing into yours echoed around the dressing room. No matter how badly you wanted to, you didn’t dare look away from the mirror, in which you saw exactly what Crowley was doing. One hand gripped your hip, while the other that had been on your chin had lowered to your throat, tugging you upwards and against his chest.
He fucked into you at a merciless pace, never hesitating to whisper into your ear.
“You’re taking me so well, princess.”
You cried out when he bit into your shoulder. Crowley laughed against your skin, finding his way back to your ear.
“Stretching you out, buried deep in that sweet little pussy of yours… that’s where I belong. And you know it, too.”
His cock pounded against your cervix, now impossibly deep inside of your convulsing walls. A second orgasm crashed over you; Crowley groaned as your walls clamped around his cock.
Crowley took hold of your arms, having been limp at your sides, trying to gain purchase of anything in front of you. He gripped each wrist and tugged them back, bracing himself with the tension as he folded you over as you’d been before.
The quick pace from before resumed, his hips snapping into yours. You softly cried out while Crowley pounded you from behind, unable to move your hands to touch him.
He said amusingly as you struggled in his grip, “I know, sweet girl. I know what you need, but Daddy needs to take of this first.”
The thrusts became harsher as Crowley worked you toward another orgasm, responding with a deep thrust each time you shuddered around his cock. You glanced back up at him, your lustful eyes locking onto his. You gave him a playful smile before clenching onto him again, purely to draw out that breathy moan you loved. His hips began to falter as his orgasm chased your own.
“Come on, sweetness, finish with me,” he demanded through gritted teeth. You’d known exactly how to send him over that edge.
All you had to do was meet his eyes, give him a devious smile, and clench down onto his cock, and he’d be undone. As you’d thought, this is what took him over. Crowley threw his head back as his orgasm rolled through him. Warm ropes of his cum flooded your walls, coating them with his seed. Your orgasm followed soon after, making Crowley whine as you tightened around his sensitive tip.
You both caught your breath before he pulled out of you. He lowered himself to see the aftermath, ogling at the sight of his cum leaking from your stretched hole. Crowley collected it on his fingers, brushing over your clit. You stood there on wobbly legs as Crowley brought his hand to your mouth, letting you taste him around his slick fingers.
“Can’t let it go to waste,” he remarked. “Swallow.”
It was salty and thick on your tongue. You licked him clean and swallowed dutifully, smiling back at him. Crowley leaned in to kiss your cheek and helped you stand more fully before adjusting his pants around his hips.
The King was no novice with aftercare, though this dressing room was not ideal. Crowley gently tugged your dress back down your thighs, planting kisses on your legs along the way. He gave you soft praises as he neatly folded your original outfit, securing it in his arms.
“You did so well,” he whispered, kissing your temple, then your lips. You could still taste yourself on his mouth, foreign and erotic.
“Let’s get that dress. I’ll have a bath drawn for you when we’re home.”
“And after the bath?” You quipped with a smirk.
Crowley let out a low chuckle, ushering you out of the dressing room.
“Round two, already?”

I don't think cohost (which hides follower counts and reblog counts etc) was able to convince me that hiding all analytics was the right move.
But bluesky (which shows everything and bc of the invite system is exclusively used by clout chasers (I can say that bc I'm a clout chasing weirdo too)) was able to convince me that hiding all analytics was the right move.
The vibe difference is stark.
And! To be fair! Cohost is an absolute ghost town! But the approximately five posts that show up on my dashboard over there each day are bangers! And I think the people using it know it's a ghost town! Which is cute!
People on bluesky seem to think that bluesky is not only the future (it may be (that's why I'm on it)), but that it's also the present (it is not lol). They're talking about hypothetical careers being made and lost over structural changes causing imagined declines in engagement and needing to organize to methodically promote each other. They don't know they're in a ghost town.
Meanwhile. Tumblr (this shuffling corpse of a social media platform) (this laughing stock of a website) apparently has literally like a hundred times more monthly active users than bluesky has total registered accounts (and there's a lot of accounts on there that haven't been touched in a month).

hello, loves
good morning! happy saturday! i've got a coffee by my side as i write this post and boy, do i have a lot to do today.
now that the school week has ended, i'm going to focus on spending today smashing out all of my leftover work (there's a lot).
{ REFLECTION AND ANALYTICAL PARAGRAPH OF 'THE PEDESTRIAN' BY RAY BRADBURY ☆ learner portfolio (ct2b) ☆ spanish chapter 3 homework book ☆ sehs glossary and learning doc (1A musculoskeletal system) ☆ buis research for pest analysis of a country ☆ buis hrm presentation (research, creation of pp, additional resources) ☆ buis true or false quiz ☆ ABC training ☆ phys practice q's ☆ phys glossary and knowledge ☆ maths chapter 18 hw book ☆ maths work on understanding of trig and true bearings }
my goal with all of my work is to get at least 1 pomodoro complete of each task, and if i finish that in good time, i can circle back around. i need to remember that this is the life i chose for myself, i had to apply to and do testing to get into my current school. i'm grateful for the opportunities it gives me.
other than school work, this morning i stretched for a bit (it's really becoming a habit, which i'm proud of) and read a chapter. i'm currently working on learning to mindfully read--not reading for the sake of reading.
magazine issue #1 was released today! i'm so proud of it. i'm going to be posting a new issue monthly, with all content related to what i currently post.
i hope you all have a wonderful day!

🌟 Did my bi-monthly check of your blog, and you know I cannot resist a Jane Austen Personality ask game
(also praying for you in the new year and sending you so much love <3)
Grace!! thank you so much for the prayers and the love!!!! Will so very happily take both ❤️❤️❤️
Your Austen heroine: Emma Woodhouse
okay but Grace, right?? RIGHT?? Let me explain. So here is my usual caveat about all Austen heroes/heroines existing in a very specific set of circumstances with very specific flaws/character traits resulting from them. So please let me say you do not have Emma’s fatal flaw of interfering or her Extreme Blindness (I don’t think you would have bungled the Elton thing for example) but you do both have a very fascinating way of combining intellectual analysis and this very deep interest in personal relationships seen from a bit of a distance. Again Emma is so much bossier than you are and much more interested in sort of managing things, whereas I doubt you are interfering at all, but that same impulse of seeing the Bigger Picture and Seeing the Story in a way that is both analytical and yet not Coldly Detached in the way of Academia is the same!!! It’s the personal that draws you in, always, the relationship dynamics but you always have a strong view of what it is that you’re looking at and a desire to understand WHAT you’re looking at that IS analytical. You also do have a strong desire to arrange figures on the board and even sometimes shape the board itself; you see the possibilities ALWAYS in a way that’s very compelling.
There is also the same strong charm and the sense of moral duty that exists right alongside and yet also underneath that deep interest in people. Also you have a wonderful sense of, not exactly gathering people in but of stopping by their front porch or having people stop by yours for a friendly visit and that is so Emma to me. Like I love the bi-monthly visit! You are a visitor! And you have things to gather and to garner and to learn on the way. Tea to offer, gifts to bring. But you always have a home/central core to go back to when you’re finished like Emma does.
This is just my two cents/instinct. As always I could be way off base here.

HI EVERYONE: TODAY'S PAGE IS LATE.
im calling my shot too early, but i've spent the last 2 days getting my ass beat by lupus symptoms. im feeling so much better. the page is coming.
BUT in the meanwhile: i wrote this long post about why i left Hiveworks
ill put it under a readmore here on tumblr in its entirety:
intro: dont get your hopes up
look, i’m going to be straight up with you: there’s no messy drama or fallout that caused this. no juicy deets or salacious rumors to slurp down. you know if this were the case, i would have erupted across my various social medias in a frenzied rage with all the delicacy of a bull in a china shop partly for entertainment purposes. instead, this will probably be a boring at best navel gaze where i try to walk the line between pragmatically trying to explain why i left and moral grandstanding. because leaving abruptly looks weird externally, i do actually have to explain why instead of just mysteriously leaving during a period of time where i am being an obnoxious asshole. a combination of disdain for the current cultural zeitgeist and a growing culture of disrespect toward audiences has culminated in my online behavior devolving into the online version of grabbing people saying stupid shit on the street and shaking them very hard. this is something an insane person would do. i know.
the commodification and increasingly blatant commercialization of an art format that could once arguably be compared to other amateur transgressive arts (ex: underground comix, tijuana bibles) is borderline heartbreaking. not to be too dramatic, but i want to start smashing things like im a monster from the rampage arcade game to scare the NIMBYs away before they start building escape rooms where the fetish web comics used to be. there is no place unspoiled by the poison of advertising and sponsorships. except…

youtube

trying to make money in comics is a fool’s errand. go make furry porn commissions if you want to make money doing art! you’re completely out of your mind if you go into the arts to make money. full on detachment from reality if you choose comics. they should commit you if you choose web comics.

at hive:
i think people have a wildly different perception regarding the popularity of A Ghost Story so i have approximate data to give people an idea. having culled the SHIT out of my analytics results to remove bot traffic, i think i have relatively accurate results, i get about 1000 unique visitors a month (generously rounding up lol), about half of them are regulars, and 10% of them donate to patreon (this is, imo, an unfathomably large amount lol. shocking and humbling. thank you for your continued support of me in spite of [gestures]).  i feel like a small comic 99% of the time, but man. 1,000 is a big number. i can at least reasonably assume, i’m PRETTY sure, that i was a comparatively small comic in hiveworks.
my monthly payout was roughly $100 a month (and merch sales, if applicable) and their services included web site help, dealing with any merch sales, and site hosting in exchange for running banner ads (which have been a fixture on web comics since the conception of google’s ad program; remember the homestuck bidding wars??). banner ads felt like a small and reasonable compromise to be included in something that felt like a weird pipe dream. in certain circles, a hiveworks invitation was a stamp of quality with prestige; i was very aware of the company i was invited into keep and was initially pretty concerned with how my presence reflected onto them and their work. i was going through some serious brain problems due to a deeply stupid relationship and, as a result, i did my best to keep my head down, stay out of people’s way, and focus on not bringing undue shame to something i was well aware i was completely unsuited for. i had (and frankly, still have) no idea why i was chosen as i had not applied. i cannot stress enough that i was under no delusions as to the quality of my comic lol. my perception was that someone had stuck their neck out to make a special exception for me and i was constantly on the verge of fucking it up and humiliating them.
it was a very off-balance exchange extremely in my favor, and i was aware of this. especially since, being frank and honest here, i was bringing absolutely nothing to the table for them. i don’t want to put words in anyone’s mouth, but its a reasonable conclusion that i was more trouble than i was worth, given the infinitesimal worth.
the vast majority of hiveworks readers completely bounced off my comic, which makes perfect sense given the hiveworks audience is i think more interested in the genre they primarily host: fantasy and magical realism. in comparison, “a ghost story” is a slow, slooow burn about federal bureaucracy and being insane with extremely amateur art; i know what i am! and that’s fine! but i became a little resentful (and i tried not to! honest!) after 7 years of perpetually being put on a back burner. it felt like i was being strung along for reasons beyond my comprehension or as the baseline of acceptable awfulness for the website’s quality. someone has to be the “worst”, objectively. it’s not a great feeling to know it, coming to terms with it i think was much healthier than trying to fight it. it was a really good driving force to keep my mind off the nightmare of my life at that point and improve my art a lot.
AGS’ irrelevance was underscored by it being mentioned once over the course of 7 years on official social media networks, upon which a great deal of importance was placed. but frankly, there is nothing worse than dealing with the guy who sucks whining for the spotlight as though they are clueless as to why they are getting the shaft. so i simply achieved enlightenment by getting over it and realizing where i was in the hierarchy and how lucky i was to have so much shit done for me. i was (am, unbelievably. it never gets less wild when i sit down and really think about it) making enough through patreon that the $100 became my monthly fun money while i lived in oregon. it was welcome, but not essential.
a lot of real life, awful things happened that suck and couldn’t be avoided: one of the main points of communication and organization became terribly ill, COVID happened and obliterated shipping and manufacturing rates for apparently all eternity, uhhh the fabric of reality began to unravel lol. it’s been a terrible couple of years. i want to underscore this stuff so that people understand i was not wronged greatly in the grand scheme of things.
there are things that started to chip away at me over time, which made me question if i was a good fit at all. genuinely: the only thing i want to do is to try to live happily within my morals doing what i love to do. even and especially if it means living very broke. that’s the exchange i’m consciously choosing to make when i pick up the pen every day. due to the generosity of the people who support me or have supported me at any time (special shout out to adam, who puts up with this shit for some reason), i am able to do that. i contribute a proportional amount to the household now but tried to be (was??) 50/50 or 25/25/25/25 when i had roommates. i don’t want my one unyielding selfish choice to be anyone else’s burden.
i was told by another artist in hiveworks that my confrontational behavior could be a poor reflection on the brand, which became the tipping point in my choice to leave. to be clear, no one in charge told me this, but even conceptually i was not comfortable representing a company that i felt i was a member of out of obligation or inertia. i didn’t belong there and my presence was an active detriment instead of a tolerated nuisance.
anyway:
when the offer to leave was presented, i didn’t feel regret, or anxiety, or upset at all. i felt a placid sense of relief. i COULD leave. that’s TRUE. i had been kicking it around on my private twitter for a few months going back and forth with myself over what was more important to me: being able to take care of myself financially or doing something about my own hypocrisy that kept me up at night. if my incessant argument is that advertising based commercialization is a societal poison, then i need to put my money where my mouth is. and if i’m consistently annoying, i need to leave as a courtesy to everyone else.
i don’t regret my time with hive at all, but the overarching transformation from a collection of cartoonists to a brand is not where i want to take my art. i can’t bring myself to work even within the proximity of seven seas, a deeply abhorrent company. i am completely disinterested in wasting time or energy worrying about “the algorithm” because i don’t make comics for the computer’s sake and recognize that there’s a finite number of people interested in web comics in the world and an even more finite amount of money to spend on luxuries (because none of us have any money lol). i don’t want to repeat the familiar cycle of lamenting the death of art as we know it every 6 months.
people who are choosing to spend their limited funds supporting me are making a deliberate choice to elevate my presence in their life. i want and need to keep this in mind at all times, because it drives my attitudes toward what i want to choose to focus on. i want to keep my art (“art”) free with additional goodies being as reasonably priced as possible in the hopes that in this way we scratch each other’s back. making money drawing comics is a ridiculous privilege granted to me by people willing to sacrifice their time and money to me; i need to be thinking more about all that i have instead of worrying about what i don’t.

Tumblr media
[Image: The Monstrous Agonies logo, teal against a black background. The logo is a complex puzzle cube with M on one face and A on another in a gothic font. End description.]
This week, what to do about an unexpected guest; and a listener feeling disconnected from their family…
Listen on our website, on iTunes, or wherever you get your podcasts. Full transcript available online.
Tonight’s first letter came from Íris N.F., the second was from Leo Eden, this week's advert came from Michael Sperry and this week’s sign-off was based on an idea from GhostyGoose. Thanks, friends! 🥰
Huge hello and welcome to our 100th supporter on Patreon, Lux! Thank you to everyone who has supported the show so far, it really makes a difference here at Monstrous HQ.
Make your own monthly pledge at Patreon or you can chuck a little spending money my way at www.ko-fi.com/hrowen!💸
If you're feeling a little strapped for cash, though, remember - the best thing you can do to support your favourite creators is tell other people about them! If everyone who listens this week tells just one other person about the show, that would be enough to do very exciting things to my audience analytics graphs 📈😍

On Reddit and Truth Social, users have been trying to re-create the meme-stock magic for Trump Media and Technology Group—the company behind Truth Social—that boosted companies like GameStop in 2021. So far, they haven’t been too successful.
Truth Social, former president Donald Trump’s Twitter copycat, lacks two essential ingredients to the narrative of previous campaigns: underlying fundamentals and the foil of institutional investors. Large hedge funds had shorted GameStop, betting that the price would go down. This time, the stock is owned primarily by retail investors.
Unlike other social media companies, the Truth Social doesn’t disclose how many users it has, but has said previously that just 9 million people have signed up for the site, compared with over 3 billion monthly active users on Facebook. TruthSocial visitors have declined from 5.4 million in January to around 5 million in February, according to web analytics firm SimilarWeb. The site’s lack of users has contributed to poor financial performance.
On the r/wallstreetbets subreddit, home of meme-stock boosterism, most users aren’t buying what Truth Social is selling. “If you invest in this on a long enough timeline you will lose everything. Thus is strictly a movement play,” wrote Reddit user Rich4718. “If you think Donald Trump is going to create an income positive social media platform you are an absolute fucking moron.”
The company started trading publicly on March 26 under the ticker symbol DJT and has already experienced wild swings in price. On Monday, the stock slid nearly 20 percent, erasing $2 billion in value.
In a filing on Monday, the company said it had just over $4 million in revenue and $58 million in net losses. This comes after the auditor for Trump Media and Technology Group made a startling admission: The company’s losses “raise substantial doubt about its ability to continue,” according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on March 25. And yet the company is valued at around $7 billion, despite reporting these sizable losses. The valuation is propped up in part by Trump fans who see investing in the company as a way to support the former president. In some cases, these investors hold a genuine belief that Truth Social could become a major social media player.
Albert Choi, a professor of Law at the University of Michigan, says investors in Trump Media may be motivated by factors beyond traditional financial logic, like boosting the price through generating hype.
“If that’s your primary motivating factor, then you’re not going to care too much about whether the company is actually making money,” says Choi.
“I believe DJT is an investment in Donald Trump, not just Truth Social,” Reddit user autsauce, who declined to share their real name, tells WIRED. “If market participants start asking that question, which I am betting they will, they will likely arrive at a very different price valuing Truth Social in a silo.”
Choi noted that Trump winning the Presidential election could actually hurt the company’s stock, as investors' perceived need to support the former president financially by investing could fade.
“My guess is that the interest in the stock would largely disappear,” Choi said.
Some Truth Social fans have spun the company’s entry into the public market as a fresh start. The infusion of capital from people buying shares in the company will enable Truth Social to post an improved financial performance, they argue.
“With $300M to properly grow a company and Trump’s impending win in 2024, the entire situation has changed,” Chad Nedohin, who regularly livestreams about his support for the company while wearing a Jack Sparrow costume, wrote on Truth Social.
Still, Truth Social doesn’t really provide anything unique. The company’s defining feature is that it's the website where Trump is currently posting, and it is, unsurprisingly, home to many posts discussing conspiracy theories about QAnon, stolen elections, and deep state plots.
But Devin Nunes, Truth Social CEO and former Republican US representative, said in an interview last week with the right-wing activist Charlie Kirk that the company plans to combine features from other social networks.
“We’re trying to take the best of all platforms and put it into one,” Nunes said, “whether it be Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, et cetera.”
Truth Social still needs to comply with Apple’s and Google’s terms of service to remain in its respective app stores. Nunes claims, however, that Truth Social “doesn’t use any of the woke companies, referencing Parler, the social media company that was kicked off Apple’s and Google’s mobile app stores in the wake of the January 6 riot at the Capitol. “It’s kind of an interesting investment, because you’re really investing in your constitutional rights,” Nunes said. “We’re the only company out there that can’t be shut down by woke companies.”

How do you find the time and energy for all of that reading? I'm lucky to get through 3 books a year since i started working ;__;
i work at a bookstore so i had to start reading again in order to do my job well and i think that's a big part of it. and I run a monthly book club. so there are stakes involved. but a big part of the actual reading was pushing myself through my shortened attention span when i felt myself hitting a wall, just kept going at it and trying to be present with what i was reading (paying attention to my emotional reactions and mental imagery and putting anything analytical to the side unless it was happening concurrently with the reading) and noticing when i was not fully engaged. trying to read in my head as much as possible (like, with a voice) then deciding if i wanted to push on or do something else. it's a skill like anything else i think the more you do it the easier it gets

Moonshot Network is opening for YOUR podcast pitches this Friday! But who even ARE we? What does that mean? How do you even send a pitch????
Good news: we’ve made this handy slideshow in order to answer all those questions, and also questions you didn’t even know you had! It’s a condensed version of our official pitch guide, to save you the trouble of clicking through to the GDoc link! You can also find the full plain text below the cut here.
What is Moonshot and why should I pitch you my podcast, anyway?
WHO WE ARE
Moonshot is a podcast network built on creative collaborations and far-out ideas. Some of our work includes: podcast seasons recorded in 24 hours, a dunk tank fundraiser stream, amateur Pokemon competitions, fanfiction actual plays, and deep media analysis of things like Saw, Christmas music, Harlequin romance novels, and the Halo 3 alternate reality game.
Our primary goal  is to be a home for out-there ideas, shorter and seasonal projects, and experiments in the podcast medium that might not fit in anywhere else. We aim to provide the enthusiasm, the structure, and support for our members to work on their dream projects.
Our second goal is giving first-time and early-career creators the tools they need for a successful start. We feel strongly that podcasting should not be a gatekept medium, and aim to support new creators with the funding and guidance to make their show a success.
WHAT WE HOST
Here are some examples of shows currently on our network:
ARGonauts Podcast: Andrew and Marn do deep dives into the niche world of alternate reality games and the people who create them.
Riley Hopkins and Their Amazing Friends: Short-form actual play series and one-offs that focus on transformative fanwork and crossovers of established shows/franchises/characters.
I’ll Be Pod For Castmas: A seasonal podcast released in July and December where Juliet and Katherine pick a piece of holiday pop culture and discuss it through the lens of a piece of topical classic literature.
After School Anime Club: Max, Max, and Stevie take a nostalgia trip back to the anime of their youth, and play game shows about it along the way.
The Podcast Mines: There But For The Grace Of Pod Go We: Riley and Andrew pitch each other podcasts, talk about the medium of podcasting, and sometimes do neither of those things.
WHAT WE OFFER
We offer network members a lot of perks, including:
Coverage of hosting costs, plus access to Pinecast's advanced analytics
A pre-existing community of fans and listeners to introduce your show to
Collaborative network shows with monthly spots for guest hosts
Other podcasters to talk shop and collaborate with in our creators-only Discord
Assets for streaming, a Twitch channel, and (time permitting) a stream producer
Subscriptions to Soundstripe (royalty-free music ) and Otter.ai (transcription services)
Optional participation in large group charity livestreams
OKAY...HOW DO I PITCH?
If you’re a creator looking to pitch us on a not-yet-published show, send us:
A strong pitch of your idea - what the base premise of the show is, an introduction to the regular hosts, what topics you hope to cover, and anything else that feels relevant. For audio dramas, feel free to send us an outline of the plot alongside the basic pitch!
A recorded and edited pilot episode.
OPTIONAL: More sample episodes, if you’ve already recorded them.
OPTIONAL: More scripted episodes, if you’re making an audio drama.
Examples of your past audio work. If you don’t have any, don’t worry! As long as your pitch is solid, you don’t need to have prior experience.
If you’re a creator looking to pitch an ongoing/established show, you’ll need:
A link to your feed.
Links to 3-5 episodes that exemplify what your show is about, and what it sounds like at its best.
If you’re a creator that has a pitch that is outside of these two options:
3-5 episodes in some format.
A solid pitch for why we should take on your show!
Please send these things to [email protected] with the subject line PITCH: [Your Podcast Name Here]. The body of your email should include a brief introduction of yourself, your podcast, and any cohosts; followed by links to the above requested content.
If you’re a new creator and have any sort of roadmap for your show, including an outline (for fiction shows) or a list of content you’re going to cover in future episodes (for nonfiction), we’d love to see those too! Please also include links to your and your cohosts’ social media.
Our inbox opens for pitches on November 25th! We hope to see you there!

I started an online boutique this year and it hasn’t done so well. However, I’m excited at the prospect of growing this next year. What would you do to make 2023 a great business year?
Congrats on starting your business!
Focusing on networking. Business is all about people, people and people. You’ll notice sometimes that even the stupidest ideas are funded - all because of people and their connections. It doesn’t matter who you’re connecting with, whether it’s an investor or a supplier or a customer - you’re going to have to get your extrovert side and put yourself out there.
- Attend events: conventions and seminars in your industry (for instance, if you have a fashion business - go for textile conferences), founder events, fundraisers (make sure you’ve got business cards to hand out)
- I don’t know what industry your business is in or what you sell but I’d recommend doing physical pilots - testing out at student campuses, cafes, local places… even if your business is online, you need to understand in-person feedback. This is what I did with my start up, and I learned more from my customers’ verbal feedback than I would’ve otherwise
- Invest your time in thoroughly understanding digital media marketing and costing (finance). Two areas that I feel every single founder needs to understand no matter what their industry or skill sets are. Even if neither interests you, at least get the basics of both down so that you can’t be scammed by anyone.
- Read the lean start up methodology. Have a focus on your mission statement and don’t deviate from it. If you have multiple products in your business and you’re not able to sell them, narrow it down to 2-3 and really focus on that niche. Pick and choose what you do with your work time wisely.
- Whether you’re selling a physical product or an online service, always keep a sample booklet printed and in your bag. When people ask about your business, you can quickly show them the physical catalog. Add a QR code of your boutique.
Why a physical copy? Generally when you show them your online business you’d show them on your phone, right? Don’t do that. Try to get the person to visit the website from their own phones. When you show them your website from your phone, then you can’t track the number of visitors visiting your website. Having a QR code on your booklet would mean that the person in front has to scan it from their phone, which always you to later check your analytics and also drives traffic to your website. It also gives you an idea of how many people you’ve met and shown the booklet to.
- Setting monthly, achievable targets. Study your competition, see how they grow. Learn from them so that you don’t make their mistakes. Constantly seek education.
