Fun Fact: Hognose snakes are dramatic lil guys!

I am particularly fond of the snakes known as hognose snakes, and my reasons are both understandable and correct.

This is a hognose snake:

They use these adorable snoots to burrow under sandy soil using a sort of nuzzle-y motion. They then use these burrows as a place to sleep at night, hibernate in the winter, and lay their eggs.

Plus, they come in a variety of delightful colours!

We've got brown! Beige! Yellow! Black! Red! Orange! Tan! Kinda greenish! Orange again!

And, to be clear, the snakes pictured above are wild snakes. No selective breeding by humans in these noodly bois! At least, not in these specific individuals. probably. I guess a few of them could be escapees...

But most importantly: These snakes know the true meaning of DRAMA

Hognose snakes are actors, first and foremost. When they feel threatened, the first thing they do is puff out their neck into a hood.

This superficially makes them look like a cobra, but what they’re actually trying to do is make themselves seem bigger, and therefore scarier. Possibly those dark spots on their neck helps with that!

Any resemblance to real-life Eurasian cobras, real or fictional, is purely coincidental

Also, it makes its mouth do this:

honestly, if I didn’t already know that hognose snakes were harmless, this would ABSOLUTELY make me leave it the hell alone

But if all of that^ is unsuccessful at scaring away the predator, the hognose snake pulls its signature move: playing dead

If you think that is a lame signature move, then you are wrong, because hognose snakes put EVERYTHING into their performance and I love them for it.

((I’m actually going to stick the rest of this under a read-more, bc the pictures of the alive-and-physically-fine hognose snakes do kind of look like a legitimately-dead hognose snake, if you don’t know what to look for.

But to review:

There's writhing! There's dramatic noises! There's flipping onto their back and opening their mouth wide and letting their tongue hang out! There's excreting a combination of intentionally smelly substances!!! Truly a master of the art of being left the hell alone (*^▽^*)

Personally, my favourite part of this is how they insist on rolling onto their back, even when they are rolled back onto their stomach.

Seriously, if you try to roll them right-side-up, they will flip back over. It's as though they believe that a good, proper dead snek MUST be on its back, obviously.

Sadly, the hognose snake may have made itself too scary, according to humans.

Out of fear, these snakes are commonly killed on sight 😔. I once heard someone proudly brag about how they’d killed a dozen cobras! In southern Ontario! Where cobras do not live! This is both extremely frustrating and deeply sad.

So just to highlight: hognose snakes are completely harmless. They’re just pretending to be fearsome!

(not that people should be killing venomous snakes either, imo. Let the danger noodles LIVE THEIR LIVES)

And now some bonus facts to help raise us out of that downer:

Hognose snakes are toad specialists! Their favourite food is toads, which is unusual, because toads are poisonous. Hognose snakes deal with this by force of will and also, at least two amino acid substitutions, maybe (Mohammadi et al. 2016). Possibly a few other things help with this, also (Feldman et al. 2016).

Also, I have a confession: hognose snakes... are venomous. Technically.

They are known as rear-fanged snakes, which means they have fangs aaaall the way at the back of their mouth. The venom they produce seems to be toad-specific, and is considered to be harmless to humans unless you happen to have an allergy but that's the exception rather than the rule

Also, hognose snakes are big cowards NOT aggressive and I've never even heard of anyone getting bit by a one (outside of one feeding mishap, which we can all agree was an ACCIDENT).

The series of events that would need to occur for you to be envenomated are so unlikely and bizarre that I assume you would have to be TRYING to get bit.

Hiii I only read few of your posts about chrollo because I am stressed due to my exams 😔 but as soon as they are over I am going to read all of them because the ones i read are amazing!

But could I request a really sweet and gentle chrollo? 🥺 because there are so many yandere chrollo (which i also enjoy reading) on tumblr and so few of fluff chrollo like maybe chrollo who helps his s/o to relax and tell her that everything is fine? 🫂

No worries love, I feel you with exam season...

You close the door behind you with a huff and groan, leaving behind a wet trail of water. Finally this shitty day will be over!

You'd went to a Cafe to get some studying in. Usually this works great for you and the buzzing environment helps you focus, but today was just not it. Apparently three families had decided that today would be the perfect day to have a family lunch and neither the kids nor the parents felt the need to be discreet about the incredible intricacies of their abismally boring private lives.

Coincidentally, on the way back, a sudden rainstorm had decided to make your day even worse, with making you soaked and you having to sprint home.

Now you just feel bad for not having done nearly as much as you'd originally planned for the day and you're cold and wet on top of it.

Sighing in self pity, you drop your keys into the little bowl at the door, relishing in the familiar quiet of your flat.

There is some light shining from the study so you make your way to the door. Peeking into the room your mouth forms a smile.

Chrollo is sitting in your beloved armchair, reading one of his books.

"Hello dear, welcome home," He says and reads one more sentence before tearing his eyes away from the page to look up at you with his steel gray eyes.

Before he can say anything else, you crawl on his lap and slump into his arms, burying your face in his chest with yet another dramatic groan of frustration.

He lets out a chuckle as you rub your wet face on his shirt.

"Hard day studying?" He asks, stroking your cold cheek with his thumb. You nod and wrap your arms around him in a tight hug. He pulls you closer as well and boops your hairline with his nose.

Slowly, the cold from you body begins to dissipate, wrapped in his embrace.

"I feel like I haven't done nearly enough for the exams that are coming up soon. It was just soo much and the cafe was soo loud today... " You sniff. "I couldn't concentrate at all!"

Chrollo listens to your complaining, while stroking your hair calmly. You look up at him and he smiles, quickly kissing your lips.

"I'm sure you did as well as you could, given the situation at hand. You've been studying so much the last few days too so don't worry. You'll be fine!"

He's so pretty in the low light of the study. Rain and the evening darkening the sky outside. Now that you're inside, it's quite the nice sound, to hear the pitter patter on the windows and the storm outside blowing through the street.

Listening to his sympathetic voice you smush your face back into his chest. He smells nice, you notice...

"I also got drenched on the way back," you murmur quietly and he laughs at that.

"Yes, I can feel that, dear. You're quite literally sitting on top of me." The hand on your waist squeezes your side as if to bring home the point that you're getting him all wet.

"Sorry." You bump your head against his peck with a smile, not sorry at all. But he only chuckles and pats your head in a gentle motion.

"It's fine. I was going to wash the shirt tomorrow anyways. Might as well add the pants and your clothes to that."

Your smile widens. Surely, your boyfriend is the best of all the boyfriends in the world.

Chrollo softly lifts up your chin to look at you. You blink at him and he presses a kiss to your ice-cold nose.

"We should quickly hop in the shower together, you know? For warming-up purposes only, of course." You snort and kiss him properly on the lips.

"Of course."

You and Chan are sitting in your dorm room, you on your bed resting against your pillow, him sitting on your roll-y chair, leaning over the back of it, facing you with his legs on either side of the back.

Just making small talk, you’re both just comfortable together whether it’s talking or just silence, so you like to have a mix of it.

While he’s talking, you subconsciously stare at his lips, the fullness and the way they look while he talks transfixes you. So much so, you don’t even fully register when Chan speaks up.

“You okay, there?”

You flush a bit. “Yeah! Sorry-“

He giggles. “Nah, it’s all good.” He grins, getting an idea. “Were you captivated babygirl?”

He’s joking, of course, which is why he’s giggling, figuring you’re going to giggle as well.

But in reality, your eyes widen, face flushing. “What- what did you call me?”

He giggles again. “Baby girl?”

You narrow your eyes, then grin, getting an idea. “If I’m you’re baby girl, you must be my.. daddy.”

This time he flushes, more than you did, babbling and stuttering over his words, trying to think up a response. He runs a pretty, veiny hand through his dark curly hair, and you giggle.

You suddenly feel a bit flustered just at what you said, and you’re both there giggling like little kids, just not knowing what to do with his hands.

He looks at you, a faint blush still painting his pretty face. “So.. uh..”

You giggle, smiling. “Yes, Channie?”

“I uhm-“ he bursts into more embarrassed giggles, and he gets up to come sit by you on your bed. You giggle in return, and out of just a random rush of confidence, you lean over to press a little kiss to his plush lips. He blushes more, his cheeks a pretty rosy shade.

“I do too, Channie.”

He’s a bit confused, he hadn’t even said anything, yet you somehow read his mind, much less kissed him. Poor boy doesn’t know what to say, so you giggle for the millionth time and sit yourself comfortably on his lap.

“I-“

“Shh, shh, Channie it’s okay.” You boop him. “No need for words.”

He giggles again, shaking his head, his brown curls shaking with it. You run your hands up and down his arms, covered by the soft fabric of his black hoodie. You look into his eyes, the faint dark makeup still there, and he’s smiling at you, those pretty lips of his quirked up into a smile.

You can’t help yourself, you lean down to kiss him again. This time, it’s not quick, and he’s happy, albeit still a bit flustered, to kiss back, gently cupping your face with his big hands.

You pull away after a bit and giggle. “Cutie.”

He flushes again, sighing. “You’re the cute one, baby girl.”

You laugh. “Is that what you’re calling me now?”

He laughs too. “Yup, unless you don’t want me to?”

You shake your head, smiling. “No, no Channie, it’s cute, I like it.”

He smiles. “Alrighty baby girl.”

You laugh again, leaning down to cuddle him, and he’s eager and quick to reciprocate, comfortable in your added warmth.

Boops aside, I'm sorry to hear you've been having a shit 2024 so far, I can definitely relate😓

the boops are a bright spot I enjoyed them very much

but yeah it's been a pretty rough start to the year haha

(cut for life problems)

In general it's just been a very busy, stressful year, which has made it a real struggle to try and maintain work-life balance and avoid a breakdown. I've had a few weeks this year to date where I've felt about five minutes away from a meltdown, including my birthday week. Fun. 🙃

Then March opened with my grandmother passing away after several years of declining physical and mental health. She was 96, and had been in and out of the hospital several times just since 2024 opened, so I'd been low-key dreading the call for a while. We hadn't been close since I was much younger (we were very, very different people who just did not mesh well), so while it hurt, it was a more distant kind of sadness. Still: not great for the year.

But the current disaster hanging over my head is that I had a doctor appointment last month where they noted an enlarged thyroid, which proved to be from nodules on an ultrasound, which were identified by the biopsy to be fucking cancer. So now I have to have a second organ removed after getting my gall bladder yeeted last November, meaning I'm going to be getting two major surgeries in the course if six months. Thanks body. at least this time I have some warning before I go in for it

So yeah three months in and 2024's kind of a fucking shit-show. I'm mostly just trying to keep my head above water at this point and eke out some time for me, which means poking at new story ideas and crafting and trying to keep the kittens from destroying their new fountain. The bookbinding is back, too, and while this isn't quite ready to post yet, here's a preview:

thank you @imagineacoolusername and @artsyunderstudy for tagging me today, i'm always so genuinely delighted to be included. i didn't know if i was going to post anything today or not, but i really liked the way Imagine shared different sentences from different WIPs, and as i am also a creature of multi-WIPs, i really wanted to do something similar... even tho my whole gdoc is on hold rn while i finish Without Sun. I was debating if this was an art blog post or not. The I was like…does it really matter? Yes…the art blog followers already know I’m insane 😔 Time for mains to know it too!!

So there will be some rambling (ehh kinda) under the cut

And they walk off arm in arm! Well..he’s holding on to her, and that’s sending me. He’s the fucking “lone wolf” but if Sorpresa calls him he’ll stick to her like glue.

So he just ripped some guys skin off and doesn’t give a shit when Jr or Pro get pissy with him, but when its suddenly all down to Sorpresa to win her match he not only admits he was at fault BUT apologized! The only time he’s kinda friendly with the others is when he says “You might just rate with the ace.” To be fair he was a lot nicer to them after that and they were less scared of him, but that’s not what this is about!

LOOK AT THAT!! He took her hand to make sure she would understand and then she grabs his back and is like “Don’t worry, hot shot! I got this!” AND SHE GRABS HIS CHIN NAD HE JUST ACCEPTS IT XDDDDDD

He never seems to mind her hanging off of him compared to the eye rolls and uncomfortable glances when others do it.

Anyone who can klap the Bone Breaker From Beyond and not be instantly killed is probably someone he actually likes too much to get rid of.

I like to think he actually has more respect for her than the others because she never seemed to be scared of him and even after she lost a fight with him she was still ready to keep going!

I literally have so much else to say, but I can’t add more pictures and what’s the point without visuals?

So as you can see I am very normal about them…ye. I love them and I’m glad they’re friends.

Because I've been steamrolled by another character to hyperfixate on completely out of the blue, I feel the need to talk about TFA Soundwave and his siphonophoric ass- yes, I said siphonophore, now read under the cut to find out more-!

Aside from me now suddenly getting attached to another minor character (not as fucked over as Skyke but an extra episode is STILL just 2 total episodes), I caught the curiosity bug and looked a little deeper into this bastard, and here I am sharing it.

As a refresh, Soundwave in TFA was a 'gift' for Sari with the actual motivation to be used as Megatron's new body; the method to do so being the Key and the Allspark energy it uses. Now, in terms of all the Earth sparked cybertronians (not to be confused with Earthspark), you can probably pit the two types of mecha into 'Key-born' and 'shard-born'. You get the Dinobots as the first Earth cybertronians firmly in the 'key-born' category and the Constructicons (+plus unrelated Wreck-Gar) in 'shard-born', and considering the methodology used to make Soundwave- well- SOUNDWAVE was the Key, you'd also think that he'd also be as such fitting in with 'robots Sari tampered with and Megan profited off of'.

Well- to say that Soundwave's transformation from simple Earth music bot to fully forged and sparked cybertronian was actually complete would be - perhaps - a lie.

Megatron had originally wanted Soundwave to at the very least stick around Sari long enough to fully upgrade into his new body, his cybertronian body fueled on by the Key and it's Allspark energy, and to probably remain under his command just long enough for a transfer of some sort. It is Soundwave's act of defiance, a shock to even Megan, that cut the ties between the full frame upgrade and the actual upgrading of his processor.

It was Soundwave's rebellion against the (presently) organic Sari that prevented him from being 'Key-born'.

That's not to say he isn't sapient, more that it is to say he's significantly more different in comparison to other Earth-born cybertronians.

Soundwave becomes the Soundwave Megatron designed him to be only after making the upgrade himself, with a lot of smaller Detroit robots serving as the materials to build up his frame, himself the personification of the Earth robot revolution. And when he is summarily defeated by Bulkhead (and later by Optimus in 'Human Error') all the parts that were his body shattered into the scrap parts of possessed robots passed their usefulness. All that remained of Soundwave was a little section of his original make that just so happened to be where the Key would be used.

Soundwave became a little cassette.

Bestie I swear to god-

Seeing as how his minicons Laserbeak and Ratbat don't transform into cassettes themselves (bass and keytar respectively), plus are probably part of the 'shard-born' half of Earth cybertronians, I think that it'd be a fucking hilarious reversal if the Cassetticon for the Soundwave fam was SOUNDWAVE HIMSELF! Like, if it ends up that Laserbeak and Ratbat have more cybertronian of a spark than this bitch then his siphonophoric ass has got to find that fucking shard-

And yes, back to siphonophores.

So, I love me some siphonophores, love the bitches that group together to form one being, love me that so much. I think if Soundwave were a siphonophore cybertronian frametype, it would certainly fit with the whole hypocrisy of his mentality, of unleashing a 'robot revolution' by uh... mind controlling robots to be free from their servitude by organic hands.

His spark's in the right place (buried deep within minibots or toy Soundwaves) but perhaps being like a day's worth of being vaguely sapient might kinda skew that revolution to be 'i want you to be free the way I define free' and boop I've made another mind controller a siphonophore eep-! (would be a great time to put in a link, were it not a link to a collab with a friend's deactivated blog and also not even transformers related 😔)

Considering the title of siphonophores in a more general sense are 'colonial species', a Soundwave built up as a colony of robots (so far only Detroit tech robots) and presents himself as this signal for a revolution, I think it's awfully fitting that the mentality of 'be free MY way' could be boiled down to 'be my body'. Because as a cassette - or perhaps more a cassette RECORDER or tape deck - Soundwave literally cannot move and has to rely on his music in order to get anything done, to get others to do the things he needs them to do FOR HIM. To escape from the Autobots a second time he needs Laserbeak - one of the instruments TO HIS VERY MIND CONTROLLING MUSIC - to snatch him out of there to rebuild another day, to gather enough stray robots to become a colonial system of machines in order to function as 'cybertronian'.

I just... think I really like siphonophores, man. I think they're real neat little cities, yeah? And I think Soundwave's network of robotics is just being head by someone who's like... idk give or take a few Earth months/years between Sari's season 1 birthday and Earth's season 3 Christmas old, significantly less than even the youngest of young bots (though Dirtboss and the Luna-born clones are like... the youngest newsparks) and most certainly an age that even humans would find young.

Idk, maybe Soundwave using all this Earth tech is not getting the parts that he actually needs to be actually officially a cybertronian, even if perhaps he remains a siphonophore type frame. Perhaps, with a special delivery from Megan himself all the way from Kaon, a colony of cybertronian made minicons could help connect the missing piece.

Eh, I'm just rambling at this point.
