I think that beyond everything else, House is about how we cope with failure; how we grapple with the condition of being human. You have this group of extraordinarily gifted doctors at the pinnacle of human intelligence and advancement, but every single one of them is incredibly flawed. And most of them are painfully aware of that! This is a set of people who have exceeded the expectations set for them and found the other side of accomplishment cold, lonely, and lacking. They’ve worked their entire lives for this and yet there is still something missing, something keeping them from ever truly being happy. What are you supposed to do when you find yourself there? When you’ve given your all desperately hoping it will be enough to sustain you, only to find that despite your blood, sweat, tears, and suffering, you still come up short?
Every one of the doctors at PPTH are both exceptional and haunted by the fact that they are not exceptional enough.
House, the only doctor of his specialty and caliber in the world, is exceptional; but not exceptional enough to be a good doctor while also being happy.
Chase, a brilliant intensivist and surgeon, the prodigal son, House’s heir, is exceptional; but not exceptional enough to have dedicated his life to God; not exceptional enough for his father to have stayed.
Thirteen, who earned herself a spot working under House, put herself through medical school, took flying lessons, climbed Kilimanjaro, is exceptional; but not exceptional enough to save herself from her mother’s fate.

Imagine little Turtle Tot Leo practicing his best Lou Jitsu grin in the mirror during the nights he can’t sleep. He’s gotta be just like his idol, after all! So he masters the art of the cocky grin, slowly perfecting his imitation.
Eventually that confident grin becomes his default one, and the quiet, happy smile that he’s born with, the one that he first greets his father with, that one is the rarity.
Until the invasion happens. Until he throws himself into the Prison Dimension. Until he’s beaten within an inch of his life and he’s holding onto his last remnant of his family through sheer willpower alone.
In that moment, looking at the photo of the ones he loves, that quiet smile comes back.

Todays bind! Fools Gold, by @tigers1o1 !!
Personally, I absolutely adore the paper and bookcloth combination on this bind. I got the cloth a while back for free and I’ve been waiting for a chance to use it, and then my friend Cam got me this paper as a gift! It seemed way too perfect to not use!
This was a very exciting bind, because it gave me the opportunity to try something completely new, gilded edges!!
Although it didn’t turn out perfect, I’m still super proud of how clean it ended up. Plus, I personally think the flaws make it better :D
The typesetting here was very exciting for me. A few months ago Ty held a tattoo contest for the fic, and I couldn’t not use them when I saw the two finalist designs. So I went ahead and contacted the artists, and they both said I could use them!!
Title page design: @eldrigeonsss
Chapter header design: @sheeeeeeeepherd
Thank you both again for letting me use your beautiful work!
You can read the fic here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/42798252/chapters/107512251
