Admirable Red-Bellied Toad (Melanophryniscus admirabilis)

Conservation Status- Critically Endangered

Habitat- Southern Brazil

Size (Weight/Length)- 6 cm

Diet- Small insects

Cool Facts- The admirable red-bellied toad, or sapinho admirável de barriga vermelha as they are known in Portuguese, is a newly described species of toad as of 2006. They have one of the smallest ranges of any toad, only 700 meters alongside the Forqueta River. Their greatest threat is the farms upriver of their habitat. Pesticide run-off from agriculture leeches into the River and kills off the insects the toads rely on for food, along with permeating the toad’s sensitive skin. Conservationists are working with the Brazilian government to create protections for the admirable red-bellied toad's habitat and working with local farmers to limit pesticides. There are aims for starting a captive breeding program in the near future.

Rating- 13/10 (Extremely high levels of antimicrobial resistance.)

I was curious about what the weather is like in the Carpathians at this time of year, given how much emphasis Mina puts today on how cold it is.

I'm not sure how far they've got but this is in roughly the right region:

I think there are three possibilities:

Bram Stoker's attention to detail ranges from the Lucy's hair colour end of the spectrum to the train timetables end of the spectrum, and maybe weather is on the hair colour end.

Cold weather is more dramatic so who cares what's realistic.

the “We are not worried with other travellers, and so even I can drive” line suggests one of two things:

1. People would be scandalized/offended if they saw a woman driving a team of horses (sexist, not very fun)

2. Mina is an actual menace to society who Cannot drive a cart without running somebody off the road and thus is banned from driving on busy roads (fun, intriguing, has Mina run someone over with a horse in the past??)

November 2.—Jonathan is asleep and breathing softly. The roses seem coming back already to his cheeks and he looks, oh, so sweet. I wonder what Mina—I call her Mina from his habit—would say if she saw him now. Jonathan told me she often watches him sleep and, indeed, I don't wonder that she does.

He always wakes prettily, and even now, on this steam launcher, he did not lose his grace. All his old gaiety of manner seemed to have come back, and he came and snuggled up beside me by the fire, and told me all about the history of the Szekelys.
