I've known this man for sixteen years -- and we never met until a few days ago. Back Story: 16 years ago, my husband suggested that I check out this cool new social networking site called Myspace where I could design my own page, put up music and create my own little narcissistic playland (and he didn't exactly describe it like that but whatever.) I used this platform to write and read poems from people all around the world and eventually creating lifelong friendships. Somehow, this man from Slough stumbled upon one of my many rant like poems and we became friends. Through that platform, we've watched each other's relationships blossom, kids grow up and even reconnecting via Facebook when Myspace became ancient news. I met practically everyone on my short list of real life people who inspired me over the years and wasn't sure if I'd ever have the opportunity to meet him or his partner @kat_francois. When I gained entry into the Berlin Marathon, we knew this would be that defining moment. I'm thankful to not only meet them but to hug the person who inspired me to run and train for a race in 2013. You never know who might inspire you. This world of social media can seem like a hot trashy mess but I'm thankful to be a living testament that this isn't always the case. I love you Rob and Kat. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is arguably the most talked about topic (and video game) trending across all social media platforms at the moment… why? We started talking on twitter 4 years ago, or maybe it was 5, none of us remember exactly when. United by the fangirl inside each one of us while we cried together over a boy band that eventually broke our hearts we were just 3 strangers trying to support our favourite artists. It was a hard time for me and Simran to make our mothers believe us when we said Massey was a girl not a boy. They became my "used to be in my school" friends since I had no other reasons to tell my mom over how I could've befriended them. Online friends aren't a real thing according to desi households and 99.9% of the people on the Internet are 40 year old perverts waiting to upload our photos on sites we wouldn't like seeing ourselves. We had no other excuses to make. Compared to the size of the world, we lived quite near to each other according to others but yet hours and hours away. A week ago we all three happened to be again at different places but this time so damn close you could breathe the same air. These 2 lovelies managed to get to me and I couldn't be more happier. I remember talking to Massey on the phone and talking about ....You and I? Was that the brand new song then? I really can't remember now but we talked for atleast an hour. At this day when I saw them I didn't know what to say. It was real. They were finally front of me. And guess what they weren't 40 years old, definitely not perverts. 🔸 I am so thankful for all the friends I have made online. Some of you have been with me through my crazy high and also rough low times and I'll forever be greatful about that. One of my bucket lists is to meet all my amazing Internet friends (3 down & like 50 more to go) and inshallah one day it'll happen. To all of you out there.
