"Paradise Hills" is full of homages to 1980s, delightfully camp genre film classics: When the audience sees the Paradise Hills girls for the first time, three of them are dressed in white are skipping a white rope. Just like in Freddy's saga, it's meant to be a death omen. The Escher-like architecture is an homage to 1960s British series "The Prisoner" and Uma's wedding gown is a reference to Jim Henson film Labyrinth." Paradise Hills (2019) dir. Alice Waddington

What’s your opinion on tsundere and yandere characters? Are they a bad, flat trope? Or can they be well written?
In truth, I have a huge soft spot for tsundere characters. Yandere characters I'm indifferent to (as in I'm not predisposed to like them just because they're yandere). I think that, like with all tropes, it can be done really well or really poorly (although, would it be considered a trope or a character archetype? Idk!). I think the danger falls in relying too heavily on tropes to fill in for a genuine narrative. It brings to mind this movie I saw called Paradise Hills. What was really amazing about this film was that it really did not put any effort into developing the characters or the plot. A person who had no experience with YA dystopias would have no idea why anything was happening like it did. Every plot beat would have come seemingly out of nowhere. However, for me, a person who is experienced with YA dystopias, I was able to just fill in the missing parts based on the tropes pretty much every YA dystopia has. It was such a strange experience to watch a film that was so completely incomplete. The visuals were great though. I'd watch it again just for that.
But yeah, like with all tropes, tsundere and yandere characters can be interesting and deep, or they can be cheap, cookie cutter versions with nothing to set them apart. I don't think tropes are bad, I just don't think they should be the blueprint for a story.

Sick of movies and shows afraid of using color in their costuming. Give me horror in jewel tones, black comedies in neon. I want every character drenched in these pretty picturesque pastels as blood rains from the sky.

1 - Promises in a Cave
Prompt: #1 “I chose you”
Fandom: Paradise Hills
Word Count: 435 words
Summary: You and Uma discuss whether you’ll be able to leave Paradise Hills.
Tumblr media
“Do you think we’ll ever be able to leave this place?”
Your voice echoes against the cave’s walls, your fingers grasping tightly on the sand you’re sitting on. Uma slightly turns her head towards you, and she notices how your facial features are twisted from the terror swirling inside your chest.
“We have to.” She speaks with confidence, and she looks intently into your eyes. “We promised Armana.”
A shaky sigh escapes from your lips, a nervous laugh stuck in your throat, and you give her sad smile. “You promised her you’d leave this place. I’m not sure I was a part of this…”
Uma’s expression breaks apart, and her eyes give out a glint of hurt. “You really think I’d leave this place without you?”
You stay silent for a moment, a lump of guilt forming inside your throat, and you look down at the sand with shame.
“No… No, you wouldn’t, but…” You move your finger in the sand, gently playing with it as a way to distract your mind from your worried thoughts. “… you should.”
Her eyes widen with shock. “What?”
“I mean, think about it.” You wrap your arms around your legs, hugging them close to your chest. “You’d have a better chance at escaping if you’re alone. It might take them a while to notice that you’re gone, but if two of us aren’t there… And wouldn’t it be easier for you to find Armana if I’m not there to slow you down?”
“Stop.” She roughly interrupts your rambling, her hand grabbing onto yours tightly. “I’m not leaving without you. Okay? I can’t do that. I can’t possibly do that.”
You notice the tears prickling from the corner of her eyes, and you feel yours taunting to come out as well. “Uma…”
“Please stop.” She lets go of your hands to grab the sides of your face. “Armana’s gone, okay? Whatever they did to her… It’s too late to save her now.”
You part your lips open. “Then-”
“No, it’s not too late to save you, (Y/N).” Her lips stretch into a sad smile, and you can see her emotions pouring out from her eyes. “I chose you. Please don’t give up on me. Don’t give up our future. Can you please trust that we can leave this place together?”
“… Okay.” Your shaky lips manage to form the hint of a smile, and your vision blurries from your tears. “I trust you.”
Her smile widens slightly, and you notice the relief taking over her features as she lets go of your head.
“Tonight, then. Don’t drink the milk.”
