Why Do Artists Feel Like They Can Never Take A Break - Jean-Louis Rodrigue

This blog is going to be used to informally track my thought processes as I work my way through my endless watchlists. There'll be everything from letterboxd review-level shitposts to short essays, and a variety of things in-between and beyond.
My hope is that this blog will let me write down my thoughts and feelings about film with less constraint, less self-consciousness. I'm not performing for anyone here, not even myself (insofar as that's possible). Most of what ends up on here will probably be marked by a certain level of egocentrism fed by a sesquipedalian style, but for me that's part of the fun. This is my space for navel-gazing nonsense, with hopefully a gem or two buried between essays on What Tarkovsky Really Meant In Stalker and Why Melville Understands Noir.

Post-postmodernism in Pop Culture: Homestuck’s Revenge
I recently saw an excellent video essay titled Why Do Movies Feel So Different Now? by Thomas Flight. Though the title is opaque clickbait, the video is actually about major artistic zeitgeists, or movements, in film history. Flight describes three major movements:
Modernism, encompassing much of classic cinema, in which an earnest belief in universal truths led to straightforward narratives that unironically supported certain values (rationalism, civic duty, democracy, etc.)
Postmodernism, in which disillusionment with the values of modernism led to films that played with cinematic structure, metafiction, and the core language of film, often with more unclear narratives that lacked straightforward resolutions, and that were skeptical or even suspicious of the idea of universal truth
Metamodernism, the current artistic zeitgeist, which takes the structural and metafictional innovations of postmodernism but uses them not to reject meaning, but point to some new kind of meaning or sincerity.
Flight associates metamodernism with the “multiverse” narratives that are popular in contemporary film, both in blockbuster superhero films and Oscar darlings like Everything Everywhere All at Once. He argues that the multiverse conceptually represents a fragmented, metafictional lack of universal truth, but that lack of truth is then subverted with a narrative that ultimately reaffirms universal truth. In short, rather than rejecting postmodernism entirely, metamodernism takes the fragmented rubble of its technique and themes and builds something new out of that fragmentation.
Longtime readers of this blog may find some of these concepts familiar. Indeed, I was talking about them many years ago in my Hymnstoke posts, even using the terms “modernism” and “postmodernism,” though what Flight calls metamodernism I tended to call “post-postmodernism” (another term used for it is New Sincerity). Years before EEAAO, years before Spider-verse, years before the current zeitgeist in pop cultural film and television, there was an avant garde work pioneering all the techniques and themes of metamodernism. A work that took the structural techniques of postmodernism--the ironic detachment, the temporal desynchronization, the metafiction--and used them not to posit a fundamental lack of universal truth but rather imbue a chaotic, maximalist world of cultural detritus with new meaning, new truth, new sincerity. That work was:
Homestuck.
That’s right! Everyone’s favorite web comic. Of course, I’m not the first person to realize the thematic and structural similarities between Homestuck and the current popular trend in film. Just take a look at this tweet someone made yesterday:
Tumblr media
This tweet did some numbers.
Tumblr media
As you might expect if you’re at all aware of the current cultural feeling toward Homestuck, many of the replies and quotes are incredibly vitriolic over this comparison. Here’s one of my favorites:
Tumblr media
It’s actually quite striking how many elements of the new Spider-verse are similar to Homestuck; aspects of doomed timelines, a multiversal network that seems to demand certain structure, and even “mandatory death of parental figure as an impetus for mandated personal growth” are repeated across both works. The recycling and revitalization of ancient, seemingly useless cultural artifacts (in Homestuck’s case, films like Con Air; in Spider-verse, irrelevant gimmick Spider-men from spinoffs past) are also common thematic threads.
As this new post-postmodern or metamodern trend becomes increasingly mainstream, and as time heals all and allows people to look back at Homestuck with more objectivity, I believe there will one day be a rehabilitation of Homestuck’s image. It’ll be seen as an important and influential work, with a place inside the cultural canon. Perhaps, like Infinite Jest, it’ll continue to have some subset of commentators who cannot get past their perception of the people who read the work rather than the work itself even thirty years after its publication, but eventually it’ll be recognized for innovations that precipitated a change in the way people think about stories and their meaning.
Until that day, enjoy eating raw sewage directly from a sewer pipe.
(Side note: I think Umineko no naku koro ni, which was published around the same time as Homestuck and which deals with many similar themes and then-novel ideas, will also one day receive recognition as a masterpiece. Check it out if you haven’t already!)

This image does not belong to me… it is from Sopita Pog and you can follow it on Instagram.
If there is something that as humans identifies us as such; It is the fact that thanks to our emotions and feelings we can recognize our own humanity. A person in constant growth must know that this is elementary. This and the fact that being sociable beings and living in a community (it's not my thing, look for related information and you'll have to agree with me) we have that tendency and need to live in groups, live with others, relate technically.
All this forms that inevitable process; growing up And although this is palpable, it has been part of many stories, part of the narrative from reading, cinema, series, etc… I explain this so that you understand my point. If we live it, it is nothing out of the ordinary, it is not wrong, nor is it bad, that growth is experienced by the characters that we like so much. A growth that allows them to improve or worsen. In the case of Din, Grogu and Bo, it's a blessing that this growth goes straight to something positive.
It irritates me that they want to deny that possibility to these characters and continue pigeonholing them into "I'm the tough one, the tough one, the one who's never going to get better and that's fine."
It is definitely throwing away the entire process experienced in the seasons or the content. It is not understanding that "being someone powerful" does not only consist of an important position, having a lot of money, causing fear in others, etc etc… the true intention of having power, of being powerful, of feeling fulfilled is to be happy, to live a change, having friends or a partner or family, not always ending up alone, having others who contribute to you, and that you know that empowers you, enriches you, not only materially.
Well, it is appreciated that Din and Grogu are together because that was always the purpose, denying Grogu or wanting to throw him away is ruining the series, it is wanting to spoil Din and his new path. Now to say that Bo Katan, they only want to pigeonhole her into being Din's girlfriend or just being Grogu's mom… it seems ridiculous to me and a pathetic and meaningless argument.
If you know Bo's story, everything she has experienced and that she has always been surrounded by war, you will understand her point when she said it in "Clone Wars" "I would like to be good at something else, not just fighting."
I said it before, I say it now and I will continue to say it; If by her own decision she wanted to continue as Mandalore, retire, be alone, or be with Din, her right is and she has it and has earned it. Taking care of Grogu, being his friend and betting on the role of mother does not make her weaker or less important; on the contrary, the desired motherhood is a blessing, a right that many people like to minimize. A very important act of love and responsibility, a high position that not everyone fulfills and the fact that she decides and applies it does not make her any less and it is very wrong that people take it that way, interpret it that way and want to impose it. as such. Mothers have an important role in our lives, in our environment, obviously in this content, if you don't believe me, just go check out this great character from Hera Syndulla. I applaud the fact that this line of growth is visible.
I applaud you for bringing Din and Bo closer and making the possibility of them being together, walking and continuing to grow together visible and palpable. Because growing is an internal process but there is always the option of not experiencing this process alone. And with Grogu by the hand, what better

First, let's start with some basic definitions. A Saturn Return is a significant astrological event that occurs when Saturn completes its orbit around the Sun and returns to the same position it was in when you were born. This happens approximately every 28 to 30 years and is believed to mark a period of intense personal growth, self-reflection, and the beginning of a new chapter in one's life.
A Saturn Return Chart is a type of birth chart that is cast specifically for the time when Saturn returns to its natal position in your birth chart. It gives insight into the specific themes and challenges that you may face during your Saturn Return. You can do your Saturn Return Chart here!
The Sun represents your sense of self, your ego, and your basic identity. Its placement in your Saturn Return Chart can provide insight into how you are likely to experience this time period. It also speaks to your identity and how you will be affected in a more personal way. The Saturn Return speaks volumes about our place in the world, but the Sun can show where we feel most affected in our personal lives.
But we cannot forget that the Sun is a great gift to our lives, so even if it is the place where we are being directly affected, it will also be a force that we will have to help us in this very difficult period.
Now… I love everything about Saturn... But I didn't find any studies or theories about the study of this Chart as it is for Solar Return.. so I'm making my own theories and I hope one day I can test them, feel free to comment. And no, I'm not counting on "what if Saturn and the Sun are conjunct"..
Sun in the 1st house/Aries
You may feel a strong sense of purpose and identity during this time, which can help you overcome challenges and make progress in your personal and professional life. You may also feel more confident and assertive, which can help you take charge of your life and pursue your goals with passion and determination. It will be natural for you to lead your own life now, taking action when facing your problems and not avoind them anymore.
Sun in the 2nd house/Taurus
You may feel more focused on your material resources and financial stability, which can help you navigate the challenges of the Saturn Return and build a solid foundation for the future. You may also feel more grounded and practical, which can help you make wise decisions and avoid unnecessary risks. As funny as it is, you too can feel like the most beautiful being on earth, finally accepting your body and your own marks, the famous Glow Up.
Sun in the 3rd house/Gemini
You may feel more curious and communicative, which can help you learn valuable lessons and connect with others during this time. You may also feel more scattered and restless, which can make it challenging to focus on one thing at a time. You can reconnect with your childhood friends, your parents' friends and neighbors and they will help you through this process. Studying, having fun and going out for a walk can help you during this period.
Sun in the 4th house/Cancer
You may feel more connected to your family and roots, which can provide a source of strength and support during the Saturn Return. You may also feel more emotional and sensitive, which can make it challenging to deal with conflicts and challenges. You can also go back to your childhood home and reconnect with all the tastes you had as a child, your biggest help will be your inner child.
Sun in the 5th house/Leo
You may feel more creative and expressive, which can help you overcome challenges and find joy during this time. You may also feel more dramatic and attention-seeking, which can make it challenging to balance your personal and professional life. The love for the arts, especially theater and cinema, will guide you in an unimaginable way, believe me, we can connect and learn from fictional stories as well as our own, connect with that one passionate character.
Sun in the 6th house/Virgo
You may feel more focused on your health and daily routines, which can help you stay grounded and productive during the Saturn Return. You may also feel more critical and perfectionistic, which can make it challenging to accept yourself and others. Now everything you learned and what your mother and teachers taught you and you didn't pay attention (or thought it was useless) will make sense. You know, I believe that nothing is by chance and with that aspect you will see that even those 3 months of taking dance classes will be useful for you one day.
Sun in the 7th house/Libra
You may feel more focused on your partnerships and relationships, which can help you navigate the challenges of the Saturn Return and strengthen your personal and professional connections. You may also feel more indecisive and conflict-averse, which can make it challenging to make important decisions and stand up for yourself. You will realize that you are loved by others too, here is not that story of "I gave my love and he threw it in the trash", to tell you the truth, this love is not only from your romantic partner... it is from yours life partners, you will know how important you are in each one's life and see how they are ready to help you when you need it.
Sun in the 8th house/Scorpio
You may feel more transformative and intense, which can help you let go of old patterns and embrace new opportunities for growth and change. You may also feel more secretive and suspicious, which can make it challenging to trust others and build healthy relationships. This placement reminds me a lot of Tyrion Lannister's quote "Never forget what you are, the rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor and it can never be used to hurt you.". That's why I see that strength lies in knowing who you are, which is often not something admirable, as your greatest source of power.
Sun in the 9th house/Sagittarius
You may feel more philosophical and visionary, which can help you find meaning and purpose during this time and explore new ideas and perspectives. You may also feel more restless and impatient, which can make it challenging to stay focused and committed. You have to learn to play with solitude and coexistence. The higher we go, the more lonely we feel, but eventually we find someone. This placement shows you not to be afraid to follow your path, wherever you are you will find someone to help you.
Sun in the 10th house/Capricorn
You may feel more ambitious and career-oriented, which can help you navigate the challenges of the Saturn Return and make progress in your professional life. You may also feel more rigid and controlling, which can make it challenging to adapt to changes and new opportunities. But at the end of the day you will feel the real will of Saturn. Once talking to my father I understood what Saturn represents... talking to him about the future I told him not to worry, because there is no way to control everything, but he replied "I want to know how it will be from here 10 years, knowing that you will be fine without me being here, that's why I worry". For me this is Saturn's energy, all this pressure and care for the future, it's to make sure you're going to be okay.
Sun in the 11th house/Aquarius
You may feel more focused on your social network and community, which can provide a source of support and inspiration during this time. You may also feel more rebellious and unconventional, which can make it challenging to fit in with traditional norms and expectations. It's funny to think about it, but Saturn already ruled Aquarius, after all, the first thing he did was rebel against his own father. With this placement you will want to be who you are, without caring about the opinion of others, without thinking about whether this or that will please the eyes, you will find your freedom.
Sun in the 12th house/Pisces
You may feel more introspective and in touch with your inner wisdom and intuition, which can help you navigate the challenges of the Saturn Return and connect with your spirituality and creativity. You may also feel more escapist and passive, which can make it challenging to take action and assert yourself in the world. Now that's contradictory... But your greatest strength will be that you won't mind this big event. In my view, Saturn has difficulty with Pisces, because it is not moldable, you can't hold water and the fish slips through your hands... but Pisces doesn't give a damn about that. The key is not to stress, "keep swimming, keep swimming".

Absolutely adore how all of Agott's growth spanning across the whole series is finally culminating into what we've seen of her in past multiple chapters, and I love love love how Coco is at the center of it all, as she always has been.
The Silver Night Procession is, given the, ya know *gestures towards the mess that is Agott's family situation*, extremely important to Agott. In her mind, lot hinges on how she will be able to present herself.
Tumblr media
Yeah, we had a Whole Damn Talk about this, but it's not like that desire to prove herself fo her family just poofs out of existence ya know? I'm certain Agott is very much aware her mother will show up any moment, if she isn't already at the parade, and hoping she can do something about impressing her, even if it's not Agott's sole reason for participating anymore.
And yet, the second she sees Coco locked up in terror
Tumblr media
(which btw like, am I reaching or does this scarily mirror Agott's flashback to her younger self crumbled on the floor. I'm willing to put this on my brain grasping for angsty implications but I digress)
When Agott sees her she immediately rushes to her. Zero hesitation. Fuck her reputation and fuck her family, Coco being in despair is magnitudes more important.
Tumblr media
And I just vibe with this so much y'all like, Agott is so ride of die for Coco. I don't know how many people ship them, personally I'm in the camp of "Agott has a crush on Coco the size of an ocean and it'd be very cute if they held hands more often" but they're just. Precious. And then Kamome Shirahama still didn't think we're cheering loud enough and drops the Arco/Orufrey parallel like.
Tumblr media
*waves my hands around wildly* Are you seeing what I'm seeing. How else am I supposed to interpret this. Poetic cinema.

i already did a bit of people’s reactions with “one and only” movie screened @ SIFF closing so here’s some more.
Tumblr media
• The theme of the movie is Youth Dance Comedy Movie! Congratulations to Wang Yibo, another personal masterpiece was born! with Chen Shuo you can’t see the shadow of Mr. Ye and Lei Yu at all. He is Calm, not rebellious, just a person who persists in growing up. A little ordinary boy who bloomed gorgeously, he was wronged, he is cute and he is shy. He cries a little, he is resilient, he can endure hardships, he is caring, he is filial, why is he like this?so good! This is the real youth film for teenagers! It's not pretending to be literary. It’s not hypocritical love, but really tells you what life should "always work hard. If you work hard, you will succeed." To be a human being, you still need to have a little persistence and faith.
• Putting aside all kinds of filters, objectively my expectations for this film before watching the film isI thought it might be an inspirational story of a well-behaved poor boy. After watching it, it greatly exceeded expectations. In storytelling, the main characters’ growth is very complete and solid, every branch extending from the main line. It is also portrayed very appropriately, the story has an absolute protagonist, but each supporting role will also be remembered by the audience and give praise to the director and screenwriter. The rhythm of the story is very tight, the part of true feelings, the part of dancing, the plot and transitions are extremely smooth. Especially the last climax part, the audience was emotionally infected and spontaneously cheered and applauded several times. The viewing experience is very exciting. Enjoyed it very much.
Let me focus on our male number one, although his own experience is different from that of Chen Shuo. They are the same, but they have the same original intention for dance. In this film, Wang Yibo was not performing, he is just showing himself. He was happy when he was able to join the dance troupe, and he desperately worked hard to dance. The joy when dancing with everyone, the empathy when encountering ups and downs, The revealing of the true affection for the family, the wild tugging and the burning of souls during the game. All of these may be what he really looks like outside of work
Throughout the movie watching process, I have been in a state of overflowing emotions, want to cry and be afraid. So although we enthusiastically position comedy films, fans must remember. Have tissues ready.
• During the screening, I lowered my head many times just to feel the drums and beats.I thought to myself that the director must be a person who understands music. Wang Yibo was also surprising. At the end of the show, I heard other people discussing "this role is too suitable for Wang Yibo", I want to say that there is no natural fit, only because of good acting that you will let the audience feel the so-called fit.
• I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie this hot in the cinema. Especially seeing the second half of the competition, I really can't help but feel excited. During our screening, there were many applause, which was shown in the media — it is relatively rare.
• I have almost never seen the audience spontaneously applauding and cheering in the middle of watching a domestic film. "One & Only" let me see this kind of hot-blooded appeal that will make you unable to restrain yourself, wanting to be a part of the screen, wanting to participate in it.
In the past few years, many audiences have lost the habit of going to the theater. Everyone has been waiting for a reason enough to bring the lost audience back into the cinema. This movie not only needs to be good enough, but also needs to be popular enough. After watching "One and Only", I have a hunch that it will become the reason for the audience to return to the theater.
• Seeing Chen Shuo practicing in the subway car, I want to cry. In fact, hard work is the most basic part, and those who have been working hard can always wait until theirown opportunity. Being seen by Ding Lei is an opportunity to see the professional dance troupe. Strength is another kind of opportunity, and then it is even more important to seize the opportunity to win the championship by yourself.
• The quality of the whole film is extremely high. It can be said that among the commercial films of the same type, this is a big step. The relationship between Ding Lei and Chen Shuo's master and apprentice, as well as the stage itself is refreshing to the audience, from script to action design, to photography and editing, are pushing up the ceiling of this genre.During the viewing process, I once thought that this film would be produced by an international team.

Were you named after anyone?
As far as I know no, in Italian my name means happiness/joy. But the name I chose for myself is named after the ocean ☺ (Talay means ocean/sea in Thai)
When was the last time you cried?
I've been crying at night, before sleeping. I spent a month with my girlfriend and going back to long distance on the other side of the planet hit me harder than a truck🧸
Do you have kids?
Nope, and I don't plan on having them. I'm already struggling managing myself lol
What sports do you play/have you played?
Many when I was little: swimming, tennis, basketball... my parents wanted their children to try many things but I've always been artisty and I stuck to ballet for 5 years, then paused it for a few and came back for another 2/3 years. Then I went for theater ☺🤸
Do you use sarcasm?
Me? No. I don't use sarcasm, I AM sarcasm. But depends on the language I'm speaking honestly (different language - different personality is a real thing lol)
What's the first thing people notice about you?
I've absolutely no idea, but for some reason they always get my vibe wrong. People think I'm cold and quiet but if they earn my trust, I'm very warm and love physical touch
What's your eye color?
Brownish? Idk people have told me they look orange at times (???) or green under direct sunlight 😃 Let's say a light brown? copper maybe???🤭
Tumblr media
Scary movies or happy endings?
I like both. Depends on my mood. (One of my fav series is scary with sad ending and all my fav movies are happy endings)
Any talents?
Some would say many, others would say none. I'd say I try my best in everything I do and talent is often a misused concept that only appreciates something you were born with instead of what you've worked hard on (even worse if people call talent the skill you've spend time and tears on)
Where were you born?
Milan 🙂 (fun fact I was kinda ☠ing and doctors had to remove my right kidney cause I had a tumor. All fine ever since tho☺👍)
What are your hobbies?
Many, I mostly make my hobbies collide with my growth in knowledge and working opportunities. Everything from writing, watching videos, playing videogames, listening to music, spending time in nature...
Do you have any pets?
2 meows 🐱🐱
How tall are you?
Shmall! I'm always the smallest one🥲 1,60 m 🤏
Favorite subject in school?
Def art class when I was little, then maybe math cause it has always been very easy for me. (But I used to love a subject depending on the topic and my own willingness to study it lol)
Dream job?
I'm trying to get a job as a 3D animator but it's hard. I just want to work in the cinema industry honestly 🥺 maybe travel from time to time...
Tumblr media
A bit late but thank you @meraki-yao for the tag, you're always lovely ☺❤

When you get this, list 5 songs from the Asian QL shows that you actually listen to. 🎶They do not have to be custom-made for the series. 🎶Non-western tracks only. Let's support Asian music and languages! 🎶Feel free to tag anyone who may be interested in participating. 🎶Add #5qls tag to your post for others to find the new favourites!
No one tagged me in this one either, but I'm once again participating from the sidelines to practise sitting in front of the computer! I've decided to omit the thai bangers that everyone knows (Skyline, Over the moon, Just friend etc) but please be assured I listen to them a lot.
Quruli - Hachigatsu wa boku no namae
youtube
Quruli is my favourite band, so when this started playing during More Than Words, I Cryed.
2. Sano Ibuki - Maria Road
youtube
This is the ending song of the movie His that I subbed a few years ago. I ugly cried when it started playing. A few days I later I went to watch the movie again with my spouse who cried so much we couldn't leave the cinema haha. It was snowing heavily that day. Just the perfect way to close the movie. I haven't listened to it recently but I was obsessed with it for months after the movie came out.
3. Matsuyama Ryuu - blue blur
youtube
This is the opening of Oldfashioned cupcake. It was my most listened song in 2022. I listened to it like 400 times on repeat while digging holes in the yard. I don't usually find new Japanese music from shows because I already have so many faves but this guy I wasn't familiar with before.
4. Khiian khai lä vanish - Gääm nong naang nan dääng kwaa khrai (transcription by me, I don't know the official transcription if there is one lol sorry)
youtube
This is the song Tian & Phupha sing in karaoke in Atots. I actually like the artist's other song better but that one is not in any bls as far as I'm aware of. I've been obsessed with this cover by Praang Praangthip for years now:
youtube
5. Billkin & PP Krit - Mai ploi müü Coming of Age
youtube
I'm obsessed with all the Itsay and Ipytm songs and a lot of their solo material. Billkin is such a talented singer????? I'm not so weirded out by all the singing bl guys because I've been long exposed to the Japanese idol industry where you have a guy or a girl who sings, dances, acts, sells products and does variety tv without necessarily being good at any of it and your role as a fan is to root for their personal growth. Having said that, Billkin is genuinely such a good singer!! His voice comes out so effortlessly. It's quite unfair how some people are born rich, find their soulmate as a teenager and become famous with said soulmate all the while possessing these actual talents while some of us (not naming any names) are sitting in front of our computers in mom's hand-me-down fleece jackets and having endometriosis haha.
I listen to a lot of Japanese music and a lot of Thai songs too but most of them aren't in any bls so I'll have to leave them for another post!

Cinema Therapy - Psychology of a Hero - Anna
youtube
Naturally, since I posted Elsa's video from this account, I had to post Anna's as well. An older video that I believe was already posted many times here, but I wanted to highlight this video because it shows an actual therapist reviewing Anna's character. While they recognize that there are flaws in both films, Johnathan Decker (the therapist) and Alan Seawright (the filmmaker) (color coded for the quotes below) still give a very good analysis of Anna's character that many fans tend to overlook.
Here are some highlights -
"Then the parents die and Anna's just spent years and years and years (alone). The first time watching Frozen thinking: come on Anna you're naive and your desperation for love is a little much. And then we all went into quarantine for a year. Wow. Turns out that was maybe underplaying it."
"Anna is so in a perfect place to be manipulated. Because she is insecurely attached. Her attachment style, both from being shut out from her sister and from the death of her parents and being alone so long she's landed on anxiously attached. Now, some people, they land on avoidant attachment style, which is what Elsa does. But for Anna, she's anxiously attached, meaning, she wants so desperately to be connected."
"But Anna has incredible strength as well. I mean, they're kind of a mirror image of her weakness. She's so open. She is loyal. and she's incredibly brave."
"Anna's loyalty is both a virtue and a vice. It is a strength, loyalty is a beautiful thing, but on the other hand, its directly tied to her anxious attachment, her need for connection, and fear of being alone. So she will do anything to keep people close by."
"Without Anna there to perform that last act in both films, it wouldn't have unlocked Elsa's ability to do the final little touches that she needed to do."
"Just like Elsa, Anna's growth in the first film was not a complete 180-degree change. She still wrestles with insecurity. She still wrestles with fear of loss and fear of abandonment. And she still wrestles with prioritizing, like when...she straight up cuts Kristoff off because she's so worried about Elsa. She prioritizes Elsa over her relationship with Kristoff and over herself and her own well-being... But there's also some character work there where Anna's still very insecure and prone to take things in the worst way possible."
"What I like about her arc through the two films is she goes to a place of independence here. She still loves people, needs people, she doesn't close herself off to people, but she's not in this codependent place where one person needs another and the other person needs to be needed. Which is...which is where she's been before."

Throwing this out into the void, because my diary is bound up in my suitcase somewhere packed away and I gotta write this down before my body forgets what I'm feeling right now.
I was just hit with a very inlayed version of feeling sonder. It's been over two years since I've left and seen or even heard from anyone back home (my doing). I just did my occasional doom-scroll through social media to see how everyone is holding up (old high school friends, family, etc.) and I discovered them all to be exactly as I left them. Like, not a hair out of place.
It's similar to how I imagine my childhood bedroom, though, I know my mother has probably torn it apart brick-by-brick now. I imagine everything back in my hometown in the same place it was as when I left it.
I saw all my old friends' recent photos online - friends who have no idea if I'm dead or alive. Their last memory of me from a few years ago would be when I became a missing person and ran away.
They all go to the same restaurants. The same cinemas. They camp at the same sites. They have the same jobs. They mingle in the same circles.
Recently, I've felt this particular chapter of my life I find myself in is due to come to a close, and that left me wondering if I was supposed to finally face the music and return home to share all I've seen and done. And, ya know, basically let everyone know I'm alive, I guess.
But then I realized; if I return, I'll be returning as someone else. A stranger, really. I've gone through so much and done so much, more than I thought possible in my little hometown. If I go home, I'll have nothing in common with any of it, as that home and life belongs to a past version of myself who's really not around anymore.
They've stayed stagnant in their growth, like little frog ponds, and I've done the spiritual, mental, and emotional equivalent of exploring all seven seas.
Going home isn't exactly on my to-do-list anytime soon. However, I'm certain the contrast of the juxtaposition between who I am today and the life I was enveloped in during my past self's experience at home would be too overwhelming. Almost like a full-fledged frog going back to their little stagnant pond, and discovering all the other tadpoles are the exact same as when I hopped away so long ago?
I don't know. It's a really profound feeling. A feeling that home as I once knew it doesn't really exist anymore, for the old me doesn't, either.

HS Journalism: Good Luck Charlie: It's Christmas Review (Feature)
★★★★☆ (4 out of 5)
Good Luck Charlie is an American sitcom that ran on the Disney Channel from April 4, 2010, to February 16, 2014. The show had four seasons and one movie. The movie, “Good Luck Charlie: It's Christmas!” is not as well known as other holiday movies to watch with family and friends.
The movie follows the Duncan family of six as they plan to spend a Christmas with grandparents in Palm Springs, Ca. It is the family's first Christmas away from their home in Denver. Things go awry when daughter Teddy Duncan (Bridgit Mendler), and mother Amy Duncan (Leigh-Allyn Baker), get separated from their family after Teddy gives up her seat on the plane in exchange for a free plane ticket.
The movie is a delight to watch, however it comes with minor issues. The movie doesn’t truly feel like cinema as it tries to feel like an episode of the show instead of a separate entity. It does take certain elements away from the sitcom formula such as the laugh track and natural lighting. The movie is clearly made for fans of the show as it jumps straight into the movie without introducing the cast to those who haven’t seen the show. The movie is supposed to take place between seasons 2 and 3, which might be why writers or the director chose to tell the narrative that way. It doesn’t truly take away from the experience and provides a unique style of movies that isn’t quite modern anymore.
The biggest issue that stands out is the acting. For example, Baker doesn’t truly have good acting in her role as the mother compared to the rest of the cast. It seems to exaggerate her personality from her show. In the show, Amy is loving and caring about her family while being very overworked. However, at times she is self-centered and does try to be the star of the family most of the time. Yet in the movie she is very aggressive, and her side of being self-centered is over exaggerated at certain points in the movie. Out of all the characters, she feels out of character until half way through the movie.
Teddy’s character seems flat for a movie character up until the end of the second act. While her character is the same as in the show, she doesn’t really progress over the course of the movie other than a few instances of her responsibility, but she’s already a responsible character in the main show. For the main character, you would expect to see her growth throughout the second act, yet that development only really occurs at the end of the second act.
The other characters are the same from their show counterparts, and their characters shine through the side plot to the main story. Their side plot was the enjoyable part of the movie including the climax up to the resolution of the movie. For instance PJ Duncan (Jason Dolley) is the dumb member of the family, yet throughout the seasons, he gets noticeably smarter and ambitious. This does appear in the movie towards the climax.
While the acting is the major negative part of the movie, the positives outweigh the negatives. Certain jokes and minor plot points pay off towards the climax in clever ways. The movie is very unoriginal in certain plot points, yet makes up for it in the creativity and exaggeration in some of the scenes and especially the climax with the male members of the family. Numerous jokes were surprisingly funny considering that the movie is a decade old.
Despite all the jokes, the movie does know how to transition from silly to serious in a way that doesn’t give the viewer whiplash. The movie is great at evoking emotions as the serious moments give impact, though they aren’t as frequent in the movie as the silly moments; they stick out and carry throughout the rest of the movie.
Overall this movie is worth watching as it captures the craziness of the holidays with family. While the movie does have issues and is heavily dated, it is still a blast to watch even as the movie is over a decade old. This movie is still fun to watch with family and friends, especially around the festive time of Christmas.

Congolese cinema and Patrice Lumumba
It’s no surprise that African cinema, especially Congolese cinema, isn’t a part of the syllabus of film studies at several universities outside Africa, and Patrice Lumumba hasn’t yet found a space in most history and political science textbooks used by the Western-centric education system in many wealthy and developing countries (including mine).
There is only a handful of scholarly work on Congolese cinema available in English, and most of them are focussed on the evangelisation of the Congolese people, in Belgian Congo, by the male missionaries through mobile film screenings using the “cinema van” built by the British before World War Two to spread propaganda among “primitive peoples”.
Gansa Ndombasi addresses the lack of available information about Congolese cinema and lays out its history in his book La cinéma du Congo démocratique (2008).
The filmmakers of the films screened in Belgian Congo – which used to be the personal property of King Leopold ll after the European countries divided the African continent among themselves at the Berlin Conference of 1885 until Belgian government took over the administration of Congo from him in 1908 and turned it into their colony – showed black characters as “so Manichaean and caricatured that local populations could not identify with them”. The films, religious and nationalist in nature, including the imported Hollywood, Bollywood, and East Asian films – shown to the Congolese community between the early 1960s and 1997 were strictly governed by the interests of Mobutu, the then (1965-1991) head of the state who facilitated the West's access to Congo’s resources as he assumed his dictatorship over Zaire, a name he adopted for the nation. Film commentators, who translated the film’s dialogues into the local language and helped the community understand the story of the film they were being shown, existed well into the post-colonial period since the colonial times. The period following the end of Mobutu’s rule was marked by an increase in Revivalists’ religious films and independent films co-produced by the unrepressed Congolese diaspora with countries like France and Belgium. Ndombasi has called this cinematic period “Cinéma Congolaise” when Zaire became the Democratic Republic of Congo and, unlike the other two male-dominated periods of filmmaking, women began to make documentaries and short films. Recently Macherie Ekwa Bahango made her debut feature film, Maki'La (2018), on the lives of the marginalized street children and violence against women in Congo.
Both French Congo and Belgian Congo gained independence in 1960, but a Congolese feature film wasn’t produced until 1987; the 1980s being the period when NGOs started flocking to Africa. Some of those charitable organisations are accused of trying to establish “market-friendly human rights” and profiteering the resistance of the people in the exploited conflict-plagued continent.
The first Congolese prime minister and a visionary pan-Africanist whose anti-colonial revolution was crucial in freeing Congo from Belgium, Patrice Lumumba, was murdered in 1961 along with two of his colleagues, by the “agents of imperialism and neocolonialism” because the three martyrs “put their faith in the United Nations and because they refused to allow themselves to be used as stooges or puppets for external interests”. During the cold war, Lumumba’s plans to nationalize Congo’s resources to enhance the country’s economic growth was unfavourable to the West, especially because Congo provided the uranium used in the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki – an outcome of Einstein’s fateful letter. Lumumba’s assassination committed with full support from the United States and Europe, in his aim to prevent the “economic reconquest” of the resource-rich Congo by the United States, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, he sought the help of Soviet Union when the United Nations refused to aid the Congolese government in “restoring law and order and calm in the interior of the country”. But he was no communist. In his own words (translated into English): In Africa, anybody who is for progress, anyone who is for the people and against the imperialists is a communist, an agent of Moscow! But anyone who approves of the imperialists, who goes out looking for money and pockets it for himself and his family, is an exemplary man; the imperialists will praise him and bless him. That is the truth, my friends.
In the book Lumumba in the arts, Matthias De Groof writes, "In Congolese society, the impression is that Lumumba is the only one who managed to hang on, to survive and to stay in people's memories through the popular and humorous speeches in which people imitate political figures, for example. When a painter portrays Lumumba, he knows that he will sell the painting, which isn't the case for other national figures." Lumumba (2000) is considered to be the first African feature film on him that portrays his life, political stance and assassination, followed by the documentary called Lumumba, la mort d'un prophète in 1990, by Raoul Peck, a Haitian director who had spent his childhood in Zaire. The father of Congolese independence has inspired a number of foreign films, among other forms of art.
To get an idea of how challenging it is to shoot a movie in the Democratic Republic of Congo at present, last week, we got in touch with Congo Rising, a US-based production company who was preparing to make a major film on Patrice Lumumba in 2021. Congo Rising's Margaret Young informed us, It’s a huge challenge! We have a call scheduled with our publicist on Thursday and a call with Roland Lumumba, Patrice Lumumba’s youngest son, on Sunday. Things are definitely NOT nailed down. The project is still alive, but there are lots of questions which must be answered.
As the Congolese people now battle the devastating consequences of the ongoing armed conflict and slavery, it is crucial that we, the common people with a conscience, do everything in our power – boycott the corporate giants getting richer by enabling modern slavery, promote the enormous creative potential of the Congolese people and amplify the unedited version of their resistance against their exploiters – to stop contributing to their sufferings.

I got tagged by @sga-owns-my-soul !
List 7 comfort films and tag 7 people:
- Jurassic Park, the first one. I saw it 12 times in theaters. For 1993, it was just absolutely overwhelming in terms of effects and sound design, and it still holds up to this day.
- Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. I didn't speak English back then, so the whole "Kevin Costner speaking in an American accent" never registered with me because I watched it in German. The soundtrack was the very first CD I bought with my pocket money.
- Titanic. I was OBSESSED. Member of the German Titanic Society, owning a corset and dress, going to a recreation of the last dinner, owning a 1912 etiquette guide obsessed. Saw it again in the cinema this year and am still blown away.
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Nobody hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans, but for me, that movie got me interested in the franchise. I had watched the older ones, but they were "meh" at best for me. Don't come for me Star Wars fans, I'm just a filthy casual.
- Stargate. I honestly lost count how often I watched it. It paved the way for a decades-long fandom. It gave birth to one of the best sci fi franchises. Also, I had a crush on James Spader.
- The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Really the whole trilogy, but that movie started it all. I saw it because I lost a bet with my dad. Long story. I attribute a lot to that fandom: jobs, friendships, relationships, connections, and a lot of personal growth all happened because I was part of it in its heyday.
- Twister. This holds a special place in my heart. My brother and I watched it as kids and quoted it back and forth so much that one time, our parents threatened to throw us out of the car on a road trip. We're in our 30s and 40s now and still, to this day, if I start a quote from the movie, my brother will finish the sentence.
I'm tagging @elveny @kunstpause @dedkake @spurious @colonelshepparrrrd @stargatevp and @starlight-edith ! If you've been double tagged, ignore :)
