Honestly, Saddler Berenson is such a fun thing for us to forget about. I love David, we all know this. But I don't gloss over his foibles. And those that dislike David always bring up his apparent murder of Tobias, the murder attempt of Jake, him betraying the Animorphs...
Saddler was a dying kid who was in an elevator one moment and was missing the next. David replaced him. No matter what happened there, Saddler's dead. He's not found later, his body isn't even recovered. He's just gone. Whether David killed him or left him somewhere to die slowly, Saddler didn't make it.
Rachel and Jake don't really think about it ever again. He was an annoying, unpleasant cousin IIRC. Probably their trauma over David, what he did to them and what they did to him (especially our girl Rachel) eclipses it.
But. as the reader, we forget about Saddler too. Arguably, the biggest sin David committed, and he's left by the wayside. It's a little fascinating.

My Future in You | 0.8 | Bradley Bradshaw x Reader
Tumblr media
Previous Chapter | Next Chapter | Masterlist
Synopsis: Bradley’s twenty-two years old and not where he’s supposed to be. He’s supposed to be out of the academy by now. Instead, he’s retaking his senior year of college and praying to god that he gets into flight school. Mav’s gone, his mom’s gone. He’s mad at the world. Then, a hook up at a Halloween party changes his future even more than he could have imagined.
Warnings: accidental pregnancy, enemies to lovers - they aren’t quite lovers yet, poor Jake bc his suffering deserves a warning
Bradley sighs softly as he leans back against the hood of the car. He folds his arms over his chest and glances towards the front door. He’s been waiting for twenty minutes for you and Jake to collect your things.
He looks around the place that you grew up. It doesn’t have much personality. It’s a nice place. But it looks like a place that a politician lives, which is what Bradley dislikes about it.
He grew up in a small house. It was a bungalow, two bedrooms - enough space for him and his mother, it had a nice backyard with space for him to play. A treehouse that he was too big to fit in by the time he was eight because his dad and Mav had screwed up the measurements.
He’d much rather raise his kid in a half-crappy bungalow thirty minutes from the beach than this place. He thinks of Pensacola and imagines that there are probably a lot of half-crappy bungalows matching that description there.
His lip quirks softly as he reminds himself to check the measurements before ever building his kid a treehouse.
Jake’s the first one out, struggling with both his bag and Bradley’s.
“How’d it go?” Bradley moves to take the first bag. Jake sighs in relief as he drops the weight into Bradley’s hand. He shakes his head slightly.
“As well as expected.” Jake scoffs. You spent a couple of minutes crying in your room rather than packing, but Jake managed to get that to stop.
The front door is still wide open behind Jake, since both of his hands were too full to swing it shut. Bradley’s eyes are on you as you struggle with your own suitcase.
He moves to stand upright and help you with it, but hesitates about stepping inside. Guns, plural, after all. You grunt as you tug the case towards the door. He shakes his head and heads towards you anyway.
Your parents might be out – specifically avoiding you – but Bradley knows that if they find him in their house, things will be even worse than they already are.
Your lips quirk up into a soft smile as he takes your suitcase wordlessly and drags it to the trunk of Beth’s car. She’s the only member of your family still talking to you currently, so will be the one driving you to the airport. Bradley sets the case in beside Jake’s. He lifts his gaze and finds you standing with your back to him, staring at the house.
George and Ellen are out today already. It’s purposeful. You know it’s because they can’t stand to look at your face. You think of the little girl that grew up in this house and how horrified she would be at how you’ve turned out. You swallow, turning and sliding into the backseat. Jake takes shotgun. Bradley sits on the other side of the backseat.
Beth glances back at you in the rear view mirror, she catches the look on your face and turns her attention towards Jake. She knows that you’ll be taken care of either way.
“Don’t worry about Dad, he’ll come around.” Beth decides.
Jake almost scoffs in the passenger seat. He’s never known his father to change his mind on anything, let alone something this big. Bradley isn’t too convinced either. Besides, Bradley’s not sure he wants that guy around his child either way.
You rest your temple against your fist. It’s clear that you don’t believe her. “How can you be so sure?”
Beth laughs, turning the car off of the driveway. It’s like the answer is so obvious to her. “Because you’re his favourite.”
You aren’t so sure. The girl that left for college might have been his favourite, but he isn’t a fan of the person that returned. You think about it for the entire thirty minute drive to the airport. About if he’ll ever forgive you. If you’ll ever be allowed in that house again. If your child will grow up with no grandparents at all.
An hour starts to seem like a long way away once the wheels hit the tarmac in Virginia. The turbulence made you a little nauseous and Bradley can’t get the memory of how weak you were when you were throwing up out of his head. Sure, you have roommates, but Bradley’s not too confident in their ability to keep an eye on you.
Jake’s the first to say it, but Bradley’s been thinking it for hours.
“Maybe you should come stay at hour place for a bit.”
You’re against the idea at first. You like your space. You like your apartment, your room. You like being surrounded by girls. You like living in a place that doesn’t smell like a gym bag.
But, morning sickness does still have a grip on you and Bradley’s worried about any other symptoms that may arise. Jake’s worried that it’s going to hit you soon that your parents really do want nothing to do with you.
He knows that that’s going to be a hard hit to take. He doesn’t mention that he’s in the same boat. Guilty by association. He knows that knowing that would make you feel even worse.
It takes some convincing, but, with both of them badgering you the entire way through baggage claim — you give in. They’re annoying enough as a team to have you convinced.
“Alright, alright - just shut up.” You give in, glaring at the both of them. They glance at each other triumphantly. Bradley grins and drapes his arm around your shoulder, squeezing you in against his side. You bite your cheek to keep from smiling.
Jake looks between the two of you. It’s better to keep his mouth shut. He’s not thrilled about the affection between the two of you. But he knows it’s not his place to interrupt.
You sleeping with your head on his shoulder the entire flight, hugging onto his arm as you leave the airport, him tugging playfully at your hair as you’re arriving at the house.
Jake knows that Bradley hasn’t been in a relationship since high school. Jake knows that that’s purely because Bradley hasn’t wanted to be. Bradley’s got a good balancing act with girls.
Being charming and affectionate enough to draw them in, being aloof and cruel enough that they think the distance is good for them, smart enough to know how to bring them back when he wants.
Jake stands torn, watching the way your lips quirk up into a smile as Bradley carries your bag upstairs.
On one hand, you’re having his baby - whether Jake likes that or not - and Jake doesn’t want to come between the two of you being a family. On the other, Jake knows Bradley well enough to know that this is just the first part of the juggling act. He opts to keep his mouth shut.
Jake moves into Bradley’s room and you take Jake’s room. Jake’s room smells less like a gym bag than the rest of the house. Your mother trained him into being hygienic early on in life. It’s just for a couple of days.
Jake and Bradley agree to take turns driving you over to your campus for classes. It’s not the easiest adjustment.
You learn to lock the bathroom door and knock before entering any room that isn’t on the ground floor. Bradley struggles with the adjustment too. By day three, he has blue balls and he can’t stand one more night of Jake talking in his sleep.
“Can you stop fucking tossing and turning?” Bradley snaps, pulling his covers up higher as he faces the wall.
After a couple of hours of passive aggressive sighs and under his breath comments, this is the final straw. It’s three in the morning and Jake has yet to have longer than twenty minutes of uninterrupted sleep. Bradley snores.
Jake bolts upright and glares at him across the room, “I’m sorry — maybe if you quit snoring, I wouldn’t have to—“
Bradley throws the covers back, sitting up and shooting a glare across the room. He grits his teeth, shaking his head as he swings his legs over the edge of the bed.
“That’s it. I’m staying in your room with-“ Bradley mutters, ready to head for the door. Jake’s eyes widen and narrow in on him from across the room.
“No the fuck you aren’t!”
Bradley groans in frustration, throwing himself back against his bed, covering his face with a pillow. Jake rolls his eyes, turning to face the other way and covering his ear with his pillow.
The next morning, Jake wakes up late. It’s already ten. He pulls a hoodie on and stumbles downstairs to the kitchen, stomach growling in anticipation. He grabs the railing at the bottom of the stairs, swinging around and starting towards the kitchen.
He’s interrupted by a happy giggle.
Jake steps forwards cautiously a few times until you’re in view. You’re sitting on the kitchen counter, eating a bowl of cereal. Bradley’s at your side, grinning at the fact that he just made you laugh.
Jake watches as you lean your head against Bradley’s shoulder and laugh softly against his skin. He sighs, shaking his head as he steps into the kitchen.
“Jake, hi.” You smile at him.
He nods in acknowledgement, then looks at Bradley, “What’s so funny?”
“Your sister just said she hopes the baby doesn’t get my big ears.” Bradley answers with his eyes on you, his lips quirked up into a smirk as he shakes his head in playful disbelief. “I said I hope it doesn’t get her damn attitude.”
Jake rolls his eyes and walks towards the fridge. You’re both too busy grinning at each other to notice his annoyance anyway.
“So, New Years - you’re still fine to go pick up the drinks with me later right?” Bradley asks as he leans a hand onto the counter beside your waist. Jake retrieves the orange juice and turns towards him.
He almost sighs in relief. That’s right, the party. He had forgotten. That’s a testament to how stressed he has been — he forgot about their annual New Years’ Eve party. He’s been waiting for something to get all of this nervous, half-angry, energy out of his system.
“Right. Yeah. No problem.” Jake agrees.
Bradley slips his phone from the pocket of his shorts and checks through his notifications. Jake watches Bradley chuckle softly and start to reply to a text. Those three entire seconds of relief fade from Jake’s system immediately. He glares across the kitchen.
“So are you guys, like, together now?” Jake asks bitterly. You look up from your cereal, eyes widening as you scowl at him across the kitchen.
“No.” Bradley answers without looking up from his phone, still smirking at the text that he’s answering. Jake watches the disappointment settle into your features. He regrets asking for just a second, then reasons with himself that he did the right thing.
You turn your gaze towards your big brother.
Jake presses his tongue to the inside of his cheek. He’s seen that Bradley Bradshaw cruelty up close a hundred times over, but Jake hasn’t ever thought to look at the girl’s face afterwards.
He regrets his choice in friends all of a sudden. Maybe if Jake had picked better company, you wouldn’t be hoping for a future with a guy like him.
Bradley slips his phone back in his pocket and looks between you and Jake, oblivious to the exchange you had just shared. He smiles softly as he rests his hand against your knee and squeezes, “Anything you want me to grab you from the store?”
You turn your head towards him, brows furrowed slightly. You swear that he’s going to give you whiplash one of these days.
“No. I’m okay.”
“Cool, I’m gonna go take a shower.” He smiles, tapping your knee and turning away from the both of you. Jake waits for him to reach the stairs before he speaks. You frown at him.
“Don’t look at me like that, I did that to show you what he’s like.” Jake answers before you can question him on what the fuck he thinks he is doing. He won’t look you in the eye.
He’s busy fixing himself some protein filled breakfast that he’s convinced will help his muscle development - he’s still a little skinnier than the other guys on the team and is busy doing something about it.
He’s certain he has the capacity to be one of the biggest on the team. You aren’t so sure. Sure, he has muscles, but he always been a tall, skinny type — you can’t imagine him as buff as he tells you he’s going to be.
“We’re getting to know each other.” You reason with Jake, scrunching your nose disapprovingly at the quantity of eggs he decides to add to his breakfast. You finish your cereal and leave the bowl in the sink, pushing yourself down from the counter.
“I know him enough for the both of us, don’t waste your time.” Jake scoffs, he furrows his brows as he finally notices the pyjamas you’ve chosen to wear. A comfy t-shirt and tight athletic shorts. “And start wearing real pants.”
You open your mouth to protest, sighing and tugging the shorts down a little further. You frown at your big brother, tilting your head at him like that will help him change his mind. “Jake… he really isn’t that bad.”
Jake stops whisking his eggs and lifts the fork, pointing it towards you accusingly.
“You’re lucky you’re pregnant because someone ought to knock some sense into you,” Jake scoffs. He shakes his head and looks back down at the… omelette? - whatever, that he’s making.
He bites his cheek, then lets out a soft sigh. “If you think you mean more to him than any other girl that might walk into this house, you’re just setting yourself up to get your feelings hurt.”
Your lips part slightly.
“Don’t be such an asshole.” You shove at his shoulder.
“Don’t be such an idiot! He was literally texting some other girl right in front of you and you’re sitting there giggling and batting your eyelashes,” Jake snaps back. He sets the fork down and turns towards you with his full attention.
He stares at you seriously, “You’re embarrassing yourself.”
Considering that Jake proclaims himself to be such an expert on cruelty, you know that this was intentional. You swallow but the lump in your throat remains. You bite into your cheek and take a deep breath through your nose.
“You’re wrong.” You bite, turning away from him.
Jake rolls his eyes indifferently, continuing to make his breakfast as you stomp up the stairs. Sure, he has always been a great big brother to you, but it’s days like today that he realises it’s because of the way that you have needed him.
He knows that you think he’s an asshole now - he knows he’ll be the one holding you when you’re crying over your broken heart soon enough.
Jake winces as your door upstairs slams. He shakes his head. In a couple of hours time, when there are a hundred people in this house counting down seconds towards New Year, and Bradley’s all over some girl that isn’t you - he knows you’ll see his point.
Hours later, you’re living through his point being proven. You sip on a cup of just orange juice from a red cup - so that no one knows that you aren’t drinking. You’re standing alone in the living room. Jake’s laughing with a girl, she’s pretty and she’s clearly into him. He hasn’t ever mentioned her to you before but it’s clear that they know each other well.
You fidget with the plastic cup, wondering how much of his life Jake doesn’t share with you. You tell him everything. You always have. Standing in the corner of the room at eleven fifteen on New Years’ Eve, you wonder if your older brother ever wanted to know, or if you just needed someone to tell. You look down at the floor.
The music is loud and you’re certain that you’re the only one still sober in the entire house. This time last year you were streaking across Richmond’s campus lawn by eleven fifteen. You suppose your streaking days are probably over now that you’re going to be a mommy. You frown against the rim of your cup.
You have already considered just ditching and going upstairs to bed, but the entire house is buzzing with people, music and scattered yelling from the frat boys that live here. There’s no way you would be able to find peace, let alone maybe go to sleep.
The lock on Jake’s door is busted and you’re certain that there will be people busting into the room all night in search of an empty room to screw in.
So, you stand alone and check routinely towards the clock on the wall.
A strong shoulder nudges against yours, bumping the arm holding your cup. You flinch as your fingers curl around it, trying not to spill. That’s a real signal that your partying days are over - the old you never would have been worried about spilling a drop on the floor during a party. Especially not at a frat house.
“Enjoying the party, Seresin?” You lift your gaze and find Bradley smiling down at you. You haven’t seen him since the party began to pick up a few hours ago. He drapes his arm over your shoulder affectionately.
You chuckle dryly, holding up your cup, “As much as I can with an OJ buzz.”
He smiles and nods as he sips from his own cup. From where you’re standing, your sense of smell tells you that it’s vodka. The scent now is so much worse than you remember. You shudder against his side and push the cup away from your nostrils.
He shifts it into his other hand without questioning as he squeezes your shoulder with his now free hand, “Right. Tell you what, this time next year, I’ll watch the kid and you can go get as wasted as you want.”
You raise your eyebrows, lips quirking up into a grin. Your heart soars. He’s thinking of you in his life a year from now. He’s thinking of your future - your shared future - and he’s got a smile on his face.
“I’m gonna hold you to that.” You tell him.
He laughs. You can tell he’s already pretty drunk. You heard a bunch of guys doing shots in the other room a while ago, it occurs to you now that he was one of them. Bradley grins, turning his head to nuzzle his face softly into your hair. You look over at Jake, relaxing against Bradley’s side. His lips press affectionately against your hair.
“Bradley Bradshaw!”
You and Bradley look up in unison, you still tucked in against his side. There’s a giggling redhead looking right at him, having just squealed his name. Bradley’s hand slips from your shoulder. His lips quirk up into a smile as he moves from your side. You sway at the loss of contact. You watch as he steps forwards.
Her arms lift and drape around his shoulders. His wrap around her waist.
You watch their embrace. It’s intimate. He doesn’t hug you like that.
Jake catches the exchange in his peripheral. He turns his head, lips parting slightly. Bradley’s grinning and whispering a greeting into this girl’s ear. You’re standing behind them, dismayed. Jake opens his mouth, ready to give the girl before him an excuse. He stops as she steps forwards, taking advantage of his turned head and pressing her lips to his neck. He wraps an arm around her waist.
He kisses her mouth.
The pieces will still be there for him to pick up in the morning.
Bradley straightens up, laughing at something she just whispered in his ear. He shoots a look back at you, patting your bicep platonically, “I’ll catch you later.”
You swallow, squinting as she slips her hand into his and leads him away.
You think of how much fun last New Years’ Eve was. How narrowly you had avoided getting arrested. You can’t remember the name of the guy you had hooked up with that night, but you remember the fun that you had.
You watch as he presses her against the kitchen island, both of them smiling at each other.
It doesn’t seem fair.
You press your tongue into your cheek, sighing as you lean back against the wall behind you. You debate whether or not it’s right to be jealous.
“Hi,”
Your brows furrow slightly as someone steps into your line of sight, blocking your view of Bradley and the redhead.
“You look amazing.” You look at the boy talking to you, your brows raising slightly in surprise. You look down at your outfit and then back up to him, lips quirking slightly. He smiles. “I’m Ryan.”
You glance past him towards Bradley. He’s leaning down and the redhead’s pouring a shot into his mouth.
You look back at Ryan. It’s not fair that Bradley gets to enjoy his night and you don’t. You smile at Ryan and tell him your name.

a few days ago, a certain robert chromolume and i brainstormed the most boring and bad possible movie version of follies
-initial announcement: rob marshall is directing a movie of follies, starring meryl streep as sally. (apparently this was already an announcement/rumor, and i just forgot about it? lol). jeremy o harris is tapped to write the screenplay.
-they are soon joined by julia roberts as phyllis, george clooney as ben, and john c reilly as buddy.
-additional casting: alec baldwin as weismann, lily james as young sally, liza minnelli as carlotta, renee fleming as heidi
-also announced: there’s going to be a new song! more on that later.
-uh oh! julia roberts has dropped out. she landed a buzzier role—playing lucy barton in the hbo miniseries adaptation of the elizabeth strout novels (s/o to @hesupportsyou for helping us with this one). george clooney dropped out shortly afterward (he just wanted to work with julia roberts again, i don’t think his heart was really in it). they’re replaced by emma thompson and richard gere.
-final casting announcement: jo ellen pellman as young phyllis, whoever is doing the josh gad role in book of mormon as young buddy, jeremy jordan as young ben, sierra boggess as young heidi, audra mcdonald as stella, ariana debose as young stella
-jeremy o harris left the project for mysterious reasons. aaron sorkin is now scrambling to write the screenplay.
-right before shooting is set to begin, liza minnelli injures her ankle. poor liza! she’s replaced by carol burnett. theatre people on tumblr and twitter post disposable takes like “i’m wishing liza a speedy recovery, but i’m also excited to hear carol’s take on the song.” some people say stuff like “you can be excited for carol burnett without being glad that liza minnelli injured her ankle, just fyi” in response to no one in particular. neither carol burnett nor liza minnelli see any of these tweets. (liza minnelli recovers, btw.)
-one more kiss is cut for time, which means you randomly have shots of renee fleming and sierra boggess in the background. (this is particularly upsetting for renee fleming, who will spend the rest of her career sticking to opera roles.)
-the new song is by sara bareilles, written because a) the producers are hoping for a best song oscar nomination, and b) it was in alec baldwin’s contract that he gets an expanded role. there’s a promo behind-the-scenes video where rob marshall is like “one hesitation i had going into this project is we don’t really get to know weismann. we’re so lucky to have sara onboard to help us flesh him out as a character.” the song is sung by weismann, toward the end of the movie (but probably before loveland), and it’s about him looking back at his mistreatment of the follies girls, realizing he has to live with his past mistakes (broadwayworld describes it as “an anthem for the #metoo era” or something). it’s the most boring song ever written. the sara bareilles version of it plays over the end credits. it is not nominated for an oscar.
follies!

Ocean's Thirteen (2007)
Tumblr media
Inexplicably, the Ocean’s franchise didn’t sink into oblivion after the sewage that was Ocean’s Twelve. This third chapter in the series fares much better than its predecessor but never reaches the level of the original (neither the original original or the 2001 remake). Still, as another installment, it does offer the remaining fans more of what they want to see, which is something.
After Reuben (Elliott Gould) loses his investment in a new hotel-casino to his business partner, Willy Bank (Al Pacino), he suffers a heart attack and becomes bedridden. Danny (George Clooney) and the rest of the Ocean Club decide to get even by ruining Bank and his new establishment.
If you’re not endeared to the Ocean’s crew, this plot will be an uphill battle. "Boo hoo. Poor Reuben is so upset he’s not making millions off this gaudy casino that he’s become catatonic. Guess it’s up to his buddies to get revenge on his behalf instead of just convincing the proper authorities that he was strongarmed into signing a contract?" Towards the end of the film, the crew’s old nemesis, Terry Benedict (Andy García, whose character is brought back under dubious pretenses), sees millions of his money donated to charity without his consent. I wonder if any of the cash the protagonists end up swiping from Banks would’ve gone anywhere except their pockets had they not had a score to settle. While some of this is mitigated by the fact that Willy Bank is a jerk, what we're seeing feels like a whole lot of “the 1%’s problems”. There isn’t a love plot to make us believe this is about anything but money unless you count the brotherly love between the Ocean’s crew. Even that seems like a stretch.
In the first movie and even in the second in a “sure, whatever”, kind of way, it made sense for these 11 people (we’ll get to that number in a moment) to join forces. Now? It seems overly optimistic to think the random Chinese acrobat who doesn’t speak English would put himself at risk as he does here. Now to be fair, this story makes much better use of its characters than Twelve did. No one gets stuffed into a bag and shipped off to nowhere halfway through, for example. Everyone has a role to play and it works though it should be noted that neither Julia Roberts nor Catherine Zeta-Jones return.
You’re wondering who the two new members of the crew are. One is the aforementioned Benedict, who plays the role of a benefactor. The other is… Eddie Izzard as Roman Nagel. I think. The motif of adding a new expert to the crew with each sequel has basically disappeared, and for good reason. This series can barely handle the people it has on its roster. Adding more is becoming increasingly problematic but it’s also necessary. See, “The Bank” has insane security measures, the kind no one in their right might would even try to circumvent. On the one hand, this makes for exciting scenes that make you wonder how the lock will get cracked. On the other, it makes the plot feel manufactured. For example, there's this super secure room that contains expensive jewelry. The plan to get in? Have Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon) and his phoney-looking rubber nose seduce Bank’s right-hand woman, Abigail Sponder (Ellen Barkin). With the help of some magic pheromones, she’ll get so hot and bothered she’ll have no choice but to bring Linus into the only room in the whooooole building that's guaranteed to be deserted. Apparently, there are cameras in the bathrooms, the closets and her private office. It’s a horrible subplot made unintentionally comical by the fact that nothing happens between her and Linus. The movie teases nudity for at least 15 minutes. Ellen Barkin's chest is ALMOST falling out of her dress for so long it’s ridiculous. I thought she was slobbering at the mouth for some man meat but she’s not even taking off her clothes? What’s going on here?!
I’ve been mostly bad-mouthing Ocean's Thirteen because the film is constantly on the brink of crumbling under its own weight. I will still call it a “good” sequel because fans of this series will be happy with it. You hate the bad guy, there are enough laughs to keep you smiling consistently and the con is so complicated it’s fun to see all the pieces coming together. All of the actors are obviously having a great time. I’m in no hurry to watch it again but if you love love love the first, you didn’t mind the second and you want to know if you should watch the third, then I say “sure”. I say this despite feeling like twice was too many for me. (April 29, 2022)

The Journey of Living at Downton
Chapter 27: March 1922
Masterlist
Tom and Emma have begun planning for their son's christening. Robert has shown his displeasure at the idea of Michael being Catholic. Emma supposes that Robert was able to get his head around the idea of Ivy being Catholic but the idea of being aware that a Catholic ceremony is going on, has bothered him. Emma is irritated by all this Catholic Vs. Protestant. They're both Christians.
Emma watches as Cora beams at her two grandchildren from where she sits in the corner of the Nursery as George rolls on the floor next to his cousin Sybbie who plays with her toys with Ivy. Emma has been cooing down to Michael who babbles at her from where he lies on the bed she sits on. She likes taking these opportunities to be away from all the hustle and bustle of the house and take time with the children as she's still going through her postpartum struggles.
The two women have been talking about the letter Emma had received today from Gwen. She was thrilled to hear from Gwen and even more pleased to hear that Gwen has gotten married though they've kept it quiet because his mother's ill, but she hopes she can introduce him to all of them soon. Gemma had told Emma that Anna had suggested they send Gwen a card with them all signing it. Cora had asked Emma to send her congratulations.
Other than her post-birth struggles and baptism arguments, the only thing that is troubling her at the moment is Edna or Miss Braithwaite. Thankfully Emma hasn't had to interact with the lady's maid as her duties don't require her to be wandering around the house like her job as a housemaid had done.
Emma swallows nervously as she thinks of the next topic she wants to bring up. "Tom and I," Emma begins, drawing Cora's attention, "were wondering if you'd be Michael's godmother."
Cora seems hesitant, but Emma can see she looks touched. "Am I allowed to be?"
"As long as at least one of them is Catholic." Emma reassures her. "Tom has invited his brother. Mary and Edith met him at our wedding."
"The one from Liverpool with the car company that offered Tom a job?" Cora questions.
"That's him." Emma affirms. "We've asked him to be Michael's godfather. His other brother Owen and his sister Ellen were Ivy's godparents."
"So, he'll be coming?"
Emma nods. "Tom thinks he should stay in the Village."
Cora looks appalled. "We can't have that!"
Emma winces, not wanting to addendum her. "He's a bit worried though."
"What do you mean?"
"Do you remember how Violet and Robert lectured Tom about not wearing the proper clothes to dinner when we first returned and not having a morning suit for Mary's wedding?" Emma asks. "He's worried how everyone will be towards Kieran."
Cora frowns and says nothing.
"Don't be angry." Emma says. "Kieran will come, he'll wear a perfectly fine suit and it'll all be all right."
"Have Tom give me the address and I'll write to him personally and say he's more than welcome to stay." Cora tells her.
Emma is still unsure but nods knowing she won't be able to fight her on this.
——
After hearing about him and a couple of weeks after giving birth, Emma had, while taking walks into the Village with her husband and children, decided to visit Mr Grigg at Crawley House and has been doing it ever since along with Mrs Hughes without the children and Tom though she often brings the children along as it seems to cheat him up.
Emma waits with Mrs Hughes at the bottom of the stairs when she hears a door open and Dr Clarkson calls, "Goodbye, Mr Grigg."
"Thank you, Doctor." Mr Grigg replies.
Dr Clarkson comes walking down the stairs, where Mrs Hughes and Emma stand waiting for him.
"All he needs to put him right is some paid work." He reassures them. Emma is glad to hear that he has been continuing to improve.
"It's hard for a healthy young man to find a job these days, never mind poor old Mr Grigg." Mrs Hughes reminds him as they all walk to the door.
"I know." Dr Clarkson replies and turns to the maid, who hands him his coat to say a brief thank you before speaking to Emma and Mrs Hughes again. "But Mrs Crawley has things in hand." He puts his coat on. "My guess is that you knew what you were doing, bringing him here."
Mrs Hughes has a slight innocent smile but Emma knows she doesn't mean it.
They are interrupted by Isobel calling from upstairs, "Emma? Mrs Hughes? Won't you come up?"
——
Emma and Mrs Hughes enter Mr Grigg's guest bedroom. The man moves to rise from his chair as they walk in. Isobel stands next to him.
"Oh, don't get up for us." Emma says hurriedly as he lets out a couple of coughs.
Mr Grigg still holds himself up from his chair, hovering. "What news of Charlie?"
"Mr Carson is still very busy," Mrs Hughes lies. Mr Grigg looks disappointed and eases himself back into his chair.
Mrs Hughes continues, "but he sends his best wishes." That's another thing, Mr Carson had made it very clear he wants nothing to do with his old business partner and friend.
Mr Grigg looks at her false smile doubtfully. "Does he? How did he phrase that exactly?"
Mrs Hughes splutters. "Well, he... he said to tell you–"
"He didn't say nothing, did he?"
"That's the thing with Mr Carson." Emma says pityingly. "He doesn't remember the days you spent together with any great nostalgia."
"He thinks it were all my fault... but it weren't." Mr Grigg says despondently.
"Meaning what?" Mrs Hughes questions.
"Never mind." He dismisses. "But it weren't my fault."
There's something very tragic going on, but neither of the women know what he's talking about.
——
Emma is surprised to hear that Violet and Isobel have been invited to dinner so suddenly as usually these things are planned in advance.
She sits on the settee next to Rose and Edith in the Drawing room. Mary stands in front of them holding what apparently is a letter from Matthew. Isobel stands in front of her daughter-in-law with Robert lingering behind her. Violet sits on one of the chairs next to them while Cora, Tom and Billy stand behind Mary.
"I don't understand. Did Matthew leave instructions after all?" Isobel questions. Emma glances between them hopefully.
"He left a letter." Robert corrects.
"He wrote it before we went to Scotland." Mary explains.
Isobel looks shocked and takes a seat in the chair next to her. "Well, where has it been?"
"Concealed in a book. They only dropped it off today." Robert informs them. Cora takes a seat in another chair and looks expectingly at her eldest daughter like the rest of them are.
Mary looks shaken and frightened and hands the letter to Robert. "Papa, you read it." She takes a seat next to Emma causing the three on the settee to shuffle up a bit.
Robert begins reading from the letter, "'My darling Mary, we are off to Duneagle in the morning and I have suddenly realised that I've never made a will or anything like one, which seems pretty feeble for a lawyer, and you being pregnant makes it even more irresponsible.'"
Violet nods sagely. "Hm, I'm afraid I have to agree with that." Emma's lips quirk slightly at her comment. She watches how Isobel is listening eagerly to Robert's every word.
"'I'll do it properly when I get back and tear this up before you ever see it, but I'll feel easier that I've recorded on paper that I wish you to be my sole heiress.'"
"What?" Edith murmurs in surprise. Emma has to agree with her. She wasn't expecting this or maybe she should have considering this is Matthew.
"'I cannot know if our baby is a boy or a girl. But I do know it will be a baby, if anything happens to me before I've drawn up a will, and so you must take charge.'" The whole family is listening intently, all of them very moved. "And now I shall sign this and get off home for dinner with you.'" Mary starts to cry and Emma herself has to press her lips together to stop the tears. "'What a lovely, lovely thought. Matthew.'" Emma and Violet both reach out a hand to comfort Mary.
"Now you see why I didn't want to read it." Mary sobs.
"But surely it must be legal, or do there have to be witnesses?" Isobel asks earnestly.
"But it was witnessed, by two of his clients, which is why no one in the office knew it existed." Mary tells them.
Which begs the question of how Matthew compelled two random clients to sit there and watch him write this private letter, instead of letting them go home and using his clerks as witnesses instead. And it also begs the question that if Matthew had the time to write these lines and two witnesses at hand, why did he not write a proper last will and testament straight away?
"Then it's settled." Tom declares.
"Nothing is settled." Robert corrects. "This is why I wanted Murray to check it first. Whatever Matthew's intentions, it is not a will."
Emma is disappointed at his words.
——
The family is at dinner. Emma sits between Rose and Edith. Mr Carson serves the wine while Alfred and Jimmy wait at the table, offering trays of food.
"I don't exactly know why, but I feel very happy that Matthew's been allowed a last word." Cora announces from between Isobel and Mary.
"I agree, more than I can say." Isobel says warmly.
"I knew he'd have a sensible plan." Edith comments.
"Yes, he wasn't the sort not to have things sorted." Emma adds.
Emma sees on Edith's right, Robert grumbling to his mother and the woman admonishing him back. She grits her teeth in annoyance at the man. The christening, now this.
"I'm sure Tom hopes you intend to get stuck in." Billy says to Mary from between Violet and Tom. Emma turns to take her food from the tray offered by Jimmy.
"I want the right to an opinion. I shall be content with that." Mary says modestly.
"You already have a right to an opinion." Robert reassures her, not looking as he takes food from the tray Alfred offers. Emma narrows her eyes at him.
"Do I? Good."
"Most certainly you do." Her father says cheerfully. "In fact, there's a question of using empty farmyards as new sources of revenue. I'd like to know what you feel about that."
Mary's expression drops. Everyone at the table is watching. "Well, I'd have to think about it—"
Robert rattles on, talking over her, "Crop rotation? Livestock versus cereals? Or indeed the whole matter of the tax. There are lots of things I would like your opinion on."
Mary, admiringly, stands her ground though looks a bit shaken. "I assume you're trying to make some sort of point?" She pointedly asks her father. Emma purses her lips in irritation as Alfred brings his tray next to her for her to grab her food.
"He's trying to show that a woman's place is in the home." Cora answers next to her, giving her husband a sharp look.
"But she knows a lot about Matthew's plans." Tom interrupts. "That has value for me." Emma smiles warmly at her husband's declaration. "Mrs Crawley, what do you think?"
"I'm afraid I'm on Mary's side, Robert, if sides there must be." Isobel replies.
"There are no sides, not at all." Robert corrects her. Emma thinks he almost looks like a petulant child not getting his way. He turns to Mary. "I'm pleased if you're pleased. I'm just saying you have some work to do. That is, if the letter turns out to be valid."
"Which you very much hope it is not." Violet remarks. Robert looks very caught out.
——
Mrs Hughes, Emma and Isobel stand facing each other in Mrs Hughes' Sitting room. It seems Isobel had been working on finding more work for Mr Grigg.
"You wrote to the Opera House in Belfast? That was enterprising." Mrs Hughes compliments.
"I wrote to a great many theatres." Isobel explains. "But the manager at the Opera House wrote back. It seems they're in need of a stage door keeper. They'd chosen one but he dropped out. He asks Mr Grigg to consider it."
"Well, that's good to hear." Emma says.
"It is."
Mrs Hughes hesitates for a moment before speaking, "I heard about Mr Matthew's letter. I hope it wasn't too upsetting."
Isobel is tearful as she speaks, "As a matter of fact, it was a relief. I felt so happy that he'd finally been heard. But judging by tonight's dinner, it may prove a heavy mantle for Lady Mary."
Emma huffs. "The only thing that'll make it difficult is her father's attitude."
——
Emma is changing for bed, pottering around the bedroom while her husband sits under the sheets reading, already dressed for bed. He's gone to bed earlier while Emma had been in the Nursery feeding Michael, who had woken up and was hungry. They are discussing what happened at dinner.
"We need to show Mary we are all on her side." Emma says as she takes off her jewellery. Nothing as elaborate as the upper case would wear but more middle class earning jewellery. "I don't want her father knocking her confidence."
"He likes Downton being under his control again." Tom points out, not looking up from his book.
Emma rolls her eyes and huffs as she slips on her pyjamas, a top and bottoms that are similar to Rose's as the young girl has encouraged Emma to get a couple of sets, after having slipped off her clothes. "I know. But surely, he must realise that he can't do it on his own otherwise he'll go back to his stupid ways."
"Mary won't allow it." Tom reassures her. He puts the book on the side table, probably realising his wife wants to speak with him and won't be ignored. "She's a stubborn one."
Emma crawls into bed next to him and slumps against his side as Tom automatically wraps an arm around her. "All the Crawley sisters are or were..." She becomes sad and tearful at the thought of the Crawley sister that's no longer with them. Tom squeezes her closer to him to comfort her.
——
Edith has once again gone to London. Plans seem to be going ahead. Edith has told Emma about Gregson's plan to become a German citizen. Emma is anxious about how this will all end though she had suggested to Edith that she should invite Gregson to the house party at Downton that's being hosted next month.
Anna hands Emma the card that will be sent to Gwen to sign, which Emma happily does. It's funny thinking back to the old days of her, Anna, Gwen and Gemma being a proper little group.
Anna herself has been pulled into chaperoning Rose to a thé Dansant in York. It seems more of a working class thing but Emma knows Anna will keep Rose in line if anything happens.
Emma knows they need to make sure that Mary learns more about the estate if she's going to own half of it (as Emma hopes) or at least have a say so she goes to Violet as she knows the woman will help her in the quest. Emma sends a message to the Dower house and the woman responds and they come up with a plan to get Tom to help Mary learn.
Emma and Mary get invited over to the Dower House and so as Tom though he is delayed due to work. Violet sits in her chair while Emma and Mary sit on the settee next to her. The three women are in the middle of a conversation when the door opens to admit Mr Spratt, the butler.
"Mr Branson, your ladyship." Emma sees her husband hurriedly dart into the Drawing room they sit in looking a bit flustered and out of breath in his rustic land agent's suit and boots. Mr Spratt closes the door and leaves.
"Sorry if I'm late. I had to call on old Fairclough at Roundhills." Tom apologises.
"You're not at all late." Violet says kindly. She waves him to a chair opposite her, on the other side of the settee and she turns Mary as he sits. "Now I asked Branson to come here because I have an idea."
Mary closes her eyes in annoyance briefly while Emma purses her lips in irritation. "Granny, you must call him Tom." The former tells her grandmother.
Violet is honestly surprised. "I thought I could call him Branson again, now that he's the agent."
"Well, you can't!" Mary admonishes her. Emma's irritation turns to amusement as she watches the duo.
"I don't mind." Tom quickly interrupts with a level of awkwardness.
Violet chuckles. "No. I see I'm beaten. But oh, how I sympathise with King Canute." Emma and Tom share amused grins.
"Now what is this idea?" Mary asks bringing them back to why they're here.
"Your grandmother and I was thinking how now that either you or your baby son own half of Downton, you should have a say in running it." Emma explains.
"It's just what you need." Violet adds.
"But didn't last night's dinner disabuse you of that scheme?" Mary wonders dejectedly. Her father's tirade had clearly gotten to her.
"Well, that's the point." Violet says. "We want er..."
"Tom."
"...Tom to be your instructor."
"What?" Tom blurts out in pleasant surprise. He looks to Emma who gives him a look that says "well, who else are we going to ask?" and he seems quite touched.
"Well, take Mary, you know, on your rounds. Let her learn the farmers' difficulties." Violet explains. "Hmm... Explain the... crops and the live-, the livestock." She has no idea what exactly is involved but at least she knows that it will matter to them. "You know, let her see the problems facing the estate." Tom looks quite willing. Mary looks sceptical.
"And are we to do all this without telling Papa? Isn't that rather underhand?" Mary questions. Despite her words, Emma sees a slight smile creeping up on Mary's face.
"There can be too much truth in any relationship." Violet says sagely.
Mary and Tom exchange a look. Tom is still grinning. It's settled. Later on in the day, Emma sees Mary and Tom off in the car.
——
Tom is pleased when he and Mary return from looking at the estate making Emma hopeful. Edith is late getting back from London so Gemma simply goes to see if Emma has everything she needs but really it's time for the two of them to have a gossip.
"Edna and Thomas?" Emma repeats in alarm. Gemma has just told her that the duo have been whispering and hanging out with one another (she hadn't used the word 'hanging out' but that's basically what was said).
"Mr Barrow and Miss Braithwaite." Gemma corrects.
Emma rolls her eyes. "I can call Miss Braithwaite what I want and Thomas doesn't care what I call him."
"He would let you." Gemma grins and Emma does a smug look back, knowing Gemma knows she's joking. "Though I'm concerned what either of them are getting out of it. You know Mr Barrow's scheming ways and how Miss Braithwaite was last time."
"I know." Emma frowns. "Perhaps it won't last. You saw how Miss O'Brien and Thomas got."
"True."
God Thomas. What are you up to?
——
Cora, Robert, Mary, Violet, Tom, Emma and Billy wait for Edith to arrive as they sit in the Drawing room before dinner. Robert leans on the fireplace with Isis lounging on the floor behind him as he talks to his wife who sits in a chair next to him. Emma sits on the settee talking to Tom and Billy who stand next to her. Mary sits at the other end of the settee talking to her grandmother who sits in a chair next to her.
The door opens and finally, Edith hurries into the room. Emma is 'horrified' to see she hasn't dressed for dinner. Heaven above.
"Ah, here she is." Emma remarks as she hurries in.
"Ah, darling." Cora utters.
Violet and Edith exchange a kiss in greeting.
"Are you only just back?" Robert asks his daughter.
"We sat forever outside Peterborough. We never found out why." Edith kisses Robert, too. "Shall I change?" She asks as she walks over to kiss her mother in greeting too.
"No, don't bother. It's only us." Cora reassures her.
"And who are we to warrant any courtesy?" Violet comments sarcastically to Mary and Emma.
"Don't be difficult, Granny." Mary warns her with a smile. Edith sits in the chair next to her grandmother.
"Where's Rose? Have we lost her?" Robert asks. He almost sounds like he wishes the answer was yes. The door opens and Rose comes in.
"I'm so sorry I'm late." She apologises.
"Never mind, never mind."
She takes a seat with Mary and Emma. Robert remains standing by the fireplace. He's clearly about to make an important announcement.
"Now I've got you all here, and before Carson comes in, I have something to say. I had a letter today from Murray..." He begins.
Mr Carson walks in and clears his throat. Apparently, dinner is getting cold. Robert holds out a hand to stop him.
"Wait just a moment while I finish." He speaks.
"Shall I leave, my lord?" Mr Carson asks.
"No. You might as well hear this." Mr Carson closes the door behind him and stands dutifully next to it. "Murray has taken Matthew's letter to various authorities and their conclusion is that it demonstrates testamentary intention."
"What's that?" Emma asks.
"It means that the writer intended the document to serve as a will." Robert replies. Emma stares at him in disbelief. Has it really happened?
"So, the bequest stands?" Violet questions. Emma can't blame her for checking to be sure.
"Yes. Mary owns half the estate." Violet sighs in relief and pats Mary's arm.
"That sounds like a very good result." Tom remarks.
"And now we should go in to dinner before Mrs Patmore blows a gasket." Robert reminds them. Emma internally snorts when she thinks of the times Mrs Patmore has done so.
They all get up. Mr Carson opens the door for them. Cora squeezes Robert's hand as she walks past him, acknowledging the brave face he's putting on this. Tom, Robert and Mary linger but not for too long before joining them.
——
Mrs Crawley and Mr Griggs, the latter in respectable clothes and carrying a suitcase, ascend the stairs from the underpass to the platform at the Railway Station with Emma, Mrs Hughes and Dr Clarkson following. They look along the platform, but apart from the station guard, there is no one else there. Emma sighs in disappointment at the fact that Mr Carson hasn't turned up after all. The train pulls into the station and halts. It is then that through the steam, Mr Carson comes walking towards them and tips his hat to the ladies.
"Good morning, Carson." Isobel greets, looking as if she's trying to contain her excitement.
"I hope I'm not in the way." Mr Carson says, seemingly trying to keep his usual proper demeanour.
"Not a bit." Emma quickly replies. "You remember Mr Grigg." She doesn't ask it as a question as that would be silly.
Mr Grigg walks towards Mr Carson. "Hello, Charlie. Good of you to come."
The two men turn and walk along the platform together, leaving the other four behind.
"I'm delighted but I'm not surprised." Isobel declares as they watch the two up ahead walk and talk.
"Aren't you? Because I'm astonished." Mrs Hughes mutters.
They begin walking slowly behind the men to give them privacy. Soon the station master calls, "All aboard!"
"I am sorry to interrupt," Isobel says having caught up with them with Dr Clarkson, Mrs Hughes and Emma lingering behind her, "but I think you must get aboard."
Mr Grigg opens the door of a third class carriage, then turns to shake her hand. "I can't tell you how grateful I am, Mrs Crawley."
"Very good luck."
"Thank you." He makes a move to get in, then turns back to Mr Carson. "I doubt we'll meet again, but can we shake on it? We've known some ups and downs together, it's true, but if this is goodbye... let's part as friends, eh?"
Mr Carson removing his glove and shaking his hand, says, "All right. I wish you well."
"Likewise, Charlie." He gets in and closes the door. Mr Carson locks it after him, and the train starts moving out of the station.
The butler turns to the woman standing next to him. "Mrs Crawley, I should be grateful if you would let me know any expense you have been put to on Mr Griggs' behalf during his stay with you."
"Oh, no. That's completely unnecessary—" Isobel insists.
"I should be grateful." Mr Carson cuts her off pointedly. Emma can see how much this means to him.
"Very well, Carson, I shall do that." So does Isobel it seems.
He tips his hat to her as the train rounds the corner and disappears from view. "Good day to you."
He walks away, past Isobel and also past Emma, Mrs Hughes and Dr Clarkson. Mrs Hughes hurries after him.
——
One week later.
"Why are you so nervous?" Emma asks as she sits in the armchair of their room nursing Michael and watching her husband fidgeting as he paces from one end of the room to the other. Ivy plays with some toys on the floor. "It's only Kieran. You're acting as if the King and Queen are coming for the christening."
"Maybe we shouldn't have invited him here." Tom blurts out.
Emma rolls her eyes. "Tom, don't be stupid!"
Tom walks over to the bed, sits down and puts his head in his hands. "I mean, maybe we should have arranged for the christening in Liverpool, near where Kieran lives. That way we'd have been out of sight and out of mind as we would have been in Dublin, and Lord Grantham would have less reason to complain or drop hints here and there that we're not doing right by Michael and Ivy."
"His thinking regarding a Catholic upbringing is backward – that's obvious." Emma admits with a sigh. "But I can see that he genuinely cares about Ivy and Michael, almost as if they're his grandchildren along with Sybbie and George. We can embrace that and ignore the rest."
Tom huffs a laugh; he looks up at her with a slight smile. "Never would have imagined the Earl of Grantham caring about my children."
"Stranger things have happened."
"I'd beg to differ." Tom remarks.
"Will you come over here please?" Emma asks Tom quietly.
Tom kneels in front of the armchair and watches Michael nurse. He seems to relax as he watches his son.
Emma runs her fingers through his hair. "Everything is going to be all right. Kieran gets on well with everyone."
Tom rolls his eyes. "He gets along well with people he likes, and you know well he's not inclined to like anyone in this house, certainly not above stairs."
"Maybe Robert will win him over with his range of alcohol." Emma half jokes with a grin.
Tom snorts. "Lord Grantham and my brother getting along. That'll be a sight."
As if on cue, there is a knock on the door. Ivy perks up in interest and wobbly pulls herself up causing Tom to stand quickly and hold her hand. Emma takes a nursing cloth and drapes it over herself and Michael. Seeing that Emma is ready, Tom opens the door, with a toddling Ivy, to see Alfred on the other side.
"Hello, sir, I apologise for the intrusion, but Mr. Branson is here." He speaks.
Tom's eyes go wide. "Already! He said he was coming on the evening train."
Emma laughs. "Thank you, Alfred. We'll be down to the Hall in a moment."
Alfred shifts on his feet, looking uncomfortable. "Actually, he's in the downstairs. I told him he could come up, when he came in through the servants' door, but he refused. Not that he's been rude or anything. In fact, he's giving everyone a bit of a laugh."
"That's Kieran." Emma says, unable to stop herself from smiling, imagining the scene he might be making downstairs and the redness of Mr Carson's complexion in the face of it.
Tom, on the other hand, drops his head back in exasperation, making both Alfred and Emma laugh. "Dear God, why does he like making things difficult." With a sigh, he turns to Emma, "Take your time finishing with Michael. I'll go get him sorted out."
——
Emma leaves Ivy and Michael with the Nanny and is reaching the servant entrance when Tom, Mary and Kieran appear at the top of the stairs. Mary must've gone with Tom as a backup.
"Kieran! It's so lovely to see you again! And with so much for us all to celebrate." Emma greets him with a grin.
Kieran leans down to kiss Emma and offers a genuine smile. "Well, I don't know about myself but you certainly do. How are the two little rascals?"
"Looking forward to meeting their uncle." Emma says warmly.
After stepping away from Kieran's embrace, she notices the continued tension in Tom's shoulders and Mary's tight lipped smile.
Emma knows that dwelling on what had obviously been an awkward scene downstairs would just make things worse so she takes Kieran by the arm.
"There'll be time for a tour later, though I doubt there's much of interest to you here in the gloomy old house, so how about we go meet Ivy and Michael?"
——
The conversation is awkward with Kieran. Emma honestly thought they would have found this sort of thing easier with her, Tom and Billy but Kieran is a different breed.
"So!" Mary interjects from her father's left, eager to move the subject to safer waters than what Kieran does for a living and the environment of Liverpool, which caused Robert to make comments about how Tom was going to drag his family to such a place. "Who's coming to the christening?"
"All of us, I expect," Cora says quickly, hoping, like Mary, to squelch further awkwardness.
"Oh, yes." Violet agrees. "If Emma and Branson- Tom want me to."
Tom smiles. "We would be honoured."
"Robert, are you coming?" Billy asks, gingerly from next to his mother-in-law.
Robert sighs. "I don't know that Tom and Emma want me there."
"How can you say that, Robert?" Emma replies from the other end.
"And anyway," Robert continues, "I wouldn't know what to do. All that crossing and bobbing up and down. I went to a mass once in Rome. It was more like a gymnastic display."
Kieran laughs but soon realises no one else is. Tom scratches his forehead, likely amused at his brother's antics.
"I'm sure even born and bred Catholics are guilty of find it all rather tiresome." Emma argues. "But you should come."
"Why? What difference would it make?" Robert asks carelessly.
"I want you there." Emma says. "Michael's going to be brought up in your house for the foreseeable future and will be close with your grandchildren and will likely love you like a grandfather and will want you there as well."
"Will you argue with that?" Cora asks with a smirk.
"If you think it's so important." Robert sniffs as if he isn't touched but Emma can see he is as he looks at her.
She smiles. "I do."
——
On Sunday, Mr Michael Kieran Branson is baptised into the Catholic faith at St. Wilfred's Catholic Church in Ripon.

The Evolution of Liberia
Tumblr media
**The Evolution of Liberia from Colony to the 1990s**Liberia is a West African country with a rich and complex history. It was founded in 1822 as a colony for freed slaves from the United States, and declared its independence in 1847. Liberia was the first African country to gain independence, and it played an important role in the Pan-African movement. In the early years of its independence, Liberia was ruled by a small elite of Americo-Liberians, descendants of the freed slaves from the United States. The Americo-Liberians established a government and society that was modeled after the United States, but they largely excluded the indigenous African population from power. In the 20th century, Liberia's economy began to grow due to its rich natural resources, including rubber and iron ore. However, the benefits of economic growth were not evenly distributed, and the majority of the population remained poor and marginalized. In 1980, Samuel Doe, a member of the indigenous Krahn ethnic group, overthrew the government of William Tolbert, Americo-Liberian president. Doe's regime was corrupt and brutal, and it led to the outbreak of civil war in 1989.The Liberian Civil War lasted for over a decade and claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The war also displaced millions of people and left the country in ruins. In 1997, a peace agreement was signed, and Charles Taylor, the leader of one of the rebel factions, was elected president. However, Taylor's presidency was also marked by corruption and violence. In 2003, Taylor was forced to step down, and the United Nations launched a peacekeeping operation in Liberia. The country held its first free and fair elections in 2005, and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected president.Sirleaf's presidency marked a period of relative peace and stability in Liberia. She made significant progress on economic development and social reconstruction. However, the country continued to face challenges, including poverty, corruption, and unemployment. In 2017, George Weah, a former soccer star, was elected president of Liberia. Weah's presidency has been marked by mixed results. He has made some progress on improving the country's infrastructure and social services. However, he has also been criticized for corruption and nepotism.Liberia has come a long way since its founding as a colony in 1822. The country has overcome many challenges, including civil war and economic hardship. However, Liberia still faces many challenges, and it is important to continue to support the country's development and progress.

DEADLY WOMEN DAILY: AMELIA DYER
Amelia Dyer was one of the most notorious serial killers and Baby Farmers during the Victorian period of the United Kingdom. Baby Farming is the practice of adopting or fostering unwanted children and infants in exchange for money. It’s estimated that Dyer had killed as many as 400 babies, but only six bodies were discovered.
Tumblr media
WHO WAS AMELIA DYER?
Amelia was born in 1837, in Pyle Marsh, Bristol, England. She was the youngest child out of five living children. She had three brothers, Thomas, James, and William, and a sister, Ann. Her father, Samuel Hobley, was a shoemaker and owned a shoemaking business, while her mother, Sarah Hobley, stayed home and cared for the children. She had another older sister, Sarah Ann, who died at the young age of 6, and a younger sister who was also named Sarah Ann, who died when she was just a few months old. Amelia loved literature and poetry, but had a difficult childhood due to her mother's mental illness caused by Typhus. She would often witness her mother's violent outbursts and would help care for her up until she passed away in 1848. Later, researchers would comment about how this affected Amelia’s mental health, and how it showed her very early on regarding how symptoms for mental illness looked like.
After her mothers death she lived with her aunt in Bristol before serving an apprenticeship with a corset maker. When her father died in 1859, her eldest brother, William, inherited the shoemaking business. In 1861 when she was 24, she decided to permanently estranged herself from at least one of her brothers, James, and moved into lodgings in Trinity Street, Bristol. After moving she met and married a 59 year old man, George Thomas, and they both lied about their ages on their marriage certificates to close up the age gap. After she married she decided to start training as a nurse, and took up jobs in Mental Asylums. She contacted a woman named Ellen Dane, who was a midwife. She learned that using her own home to provide lodging for young women who had conceived illegitimately and then farming off their babies for adoption or letting them die from neglect and malnutrition was a much easier way of making a living. Shortly after meeting, Ellen Dane had to relocate herself to the United States to escape detection from authorities.
Unmarried mothers during this time often struggled financially, since the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act removed any financial obligation from the fathers of illegitimate children. These women were further hindered by raising their children in a society where single parenthood and illegitimacy were very heavily stigmatized, thus the creation of baby farming businesses. These businesses will “adopt” or “foster” children for either regular payments or one very large payment. This money would go towards food, shelter, medicine, and basic childcare. Some baby farmers would let the children die and never tell the parents, so they could keep pocketing money. Other baby farmers would take in the expecting mothers and care for them up until they give birth, and then take their babies if they still don’t want them. Not everyone would strangle the babies like Amelia did, but would instead let them simply starve to death. The authorities often had trouble tracing any children who were reported missing. Dyer was doing basic nursing up until her husband died of old age in 1869, leaving her to care for their child, Ellen Thomas, all alone. She desperately needed more money, and that’s when she decided to take Ellen Dane’s idea and take up baby farming.
DYER’S BABY FARMING BUSINESS
Dyer advertised to nurse and adopt babies in return for proper payments, and additionally offered to take in expecting mothers until birth. Upon meeting her clients, she would assure them that their children would be properly taken care of and provided for, and stated that she was a trustworthy and respectable woman who was married and she and her husband would love the children as their own. In 1872 she remarried to a man named William Dyer, who was a Brewer Laborer from Bristol. They had two children together: Mary Ann (nicknamed Polly), and William Samuel. She eventually left her husband. At some point during her baby farming career, she decided to stop waiting for the babies to die from malnutrition as she felt like it was a wasted expense, and decided to Murder them as soon as she received the payments for each child. This allowed her to keep most, if not all of the money she received.
She was able to dodge the police for a long time, up until a doctor started to become suspicious of the amount of child deaths he had he called to certify in her care. She was arrested in 1879, but she wasn’t convicted of murder or manslaughter. Instead, she was given 6 months hard labor. When she was released she started to resume her baby farming career, but began having spells of mental illnesses and suicide attempts, which landed her into mental hospitals on and off. These often happened when it was convenient for her to “disappear.” Since she used to work as an asylum nurse, she knew how to properly behave to ensure that she’d get the most comfortable stay inside the asylum. She also started forming an alcohol and drug addiction pretty early into her baby farming killing career, which would have aided in her mental illness outbreaks. During her serious suicide attempt, she drank two bottles of laudanum, but due to her long term use of opium products, she had a very high tolerance build up and was able to survive.
After she returned from the hospital she yet again re-started her baby farming business. However, she realized it was getting far too risking having doctors come in to issue death certificates, and began disposing of the bodies herself. However, this didn’t help her avoid suspicion for too long. The police were still being cautious and some of the parents wanted to reclaim their children. This prompted Amelia to relocate often to different towns and cities to regain anonymity and used multiple different aliases. Dyer left her final stay at a mental asylum in 1893. Two years later she met a woman named Jane “Granny” Smith who would soon become her associate. Jane, Amelia and her family moved to Reading, Berkshire later that year, and Jane was persuaded by Amelia to be called “mother” around the children in their care, and to act like a loving, trusting mother when other mothers/clients came to drop off their children. It was all about making the business look as comfortable and trustworthy as possible.

THE MURDER OF BABY DORIS MARMON
Evelina Marmon was a 25 year old very popular and well-liked woman. She worked as a barmaid and gave birth in January of 1989 to an illegitimate baby girl, Doris Marmon. She put an ad in the Miscellaneous section of the newspaper that read: “Wanted, respectable woman to take a young child.” She intended to go back to work, save up some money, and then reclaim her child once she was able to properly care for her. When she was placing her ad, she also noticed another ad that was right next to hers which read: “Married couple with no family would adopt a healthy child, nice country home. Terms £10.” It was signed by a “Mrs. Harding.” She reached out to her and just a couple days later she received a response from Dyer/Harding: “I should be glad to have a dear baby girl, one I could bring up and call my own. We are plain, homely people, in fairly good circumstances. I don’t want a child for money’s sake, but the company and home comfort… I and my husband are dearly fond of children. I have no child of my own. A child with me will have a good home and a mother’s love.” A week later Dyer came to claim the baby. Evelina gave Dyer a box of baby clothes and the money, and said goodbye to her baby, broken-hearted. Several days passed by and she received a letter from Mrs. Harding, letting her know all was well with baby Doris. She replied back, but received no further response.
However, Dyer did not go back to her home in Reading, and instead went to Willesden, London, where her 23 year old daughter Polly was staying. It was there that she found white edging tape that is normally used in dressmaking, wrapped it around the baby’s neck twice, and tied it. It’s stated that the baby’s death was probably not quick. Allegedly, both women helped wrap the body in a napkin. She packed up some of the clothes that were given to her by Marmon, and the rest were sent over to a pawnshop. The next day, April 1st, 1896, she took in another child named Harry Simmons. She removed the tape around Doris’ neck and wrapped it around Harry’s, who was only 13 months old. Both bodies were stacked inside a carpet bag on April 2nd, with bricks to add additional weight, and the bag was disposed of into the River Thames.
DYERS DOWNFALL
A package Dyer had dumped in the water previously was not heavy enough, and was easily spotted on March 30th, 1896. Inside the package contained the body of a baby girl, later identified as Helena Fry. Detective Constable Anderson found a label from Temple Meads Station, Bristol, and used microscopic analysis of the wrapping paper and found the name, Mrs. Thomas, along with an address. This evidence lead them directly to Dyer, but they needed stronger evidence to connect her directly to the murder. Information from witnesses and past police reports only increased their suspicions, and Dyers home was immediately put under surveillance. The officers used a young woman as a decoy, hoping to get her a meeting with  Dyer to discuss her services, and it worked. Dyer was expecting this new client to call, but instead, she found detectives at her front door. On April 3rd (Good Friday), the police inspected her home. Although no bodies were found, the stench of decomposition of human flesh was strong. Thankfully they were able to discover other evidence such as, edging tape, telegrams regarding adoption agreements, pawn tickets for children’s clothing, and receipts for advertisements and letters from mothers wishing to know about the well-being of their children.
They put the math together and realized that within just the last few months alone, at least 20 baby’s have been put into the care of “Mrs. Thomas,” now revealed to be Amelia Dyer. They also discovered that she was yet again, preparing to move, this time to Somerset. It’s estimated that over several decades, Dyer had killed between 200-400 children. Dyer was arrested on April 4th and charged with murder, and her son-in-law, Arthur Palmer was charged as an accessory. After her arrest, the Thames River was drained and six more bodies were discovered, two of them being her last 2 victims. Each baby was strangled with white tape, which Dyer would later use as a reason as to how those baby’s weren’t hers. However, Evelina Marmon identified her baby Doris’ remains.
TRIAL AND EXECUTION
When the deaths were looked into in early May, their was no evidence linking Arthur Palmer to the murders, and he was discharged. No evidence linking his wife, Polly, either. It was further confirmed by a written confession from Dyer (her spelling and puncturing unchanged):
“Sir will you kindly grant me the favour of presenting this to the magistrates on Saturday the 18th instant I have made this statement out, for I may not have the opportunity then I must relieve my mind I do know and feel my days are numbered on this earth but I do feel it is an awful thing drawing innocent people into trouble I do know I should have to answer before my maker in Heaven for the awful crimes I have committed but as God Almighty is my judge in Heaven an on Hearth neither my daughter Mary Ann Palmer nor her husband Alfred Ernest Palmer I do most solemnly declare neither of them had anything at all to do with it, they never knew I contemplated doing such a wicked thing until it was too late I am speaking the truth and nothing but the truth as I hope to be forgiven, I and I alone must stand before my Maker in Heaven to answer it all witness my hand Amelia Dyer. - 16 April -1896”
On May 22nd, 1896, Dyer appeared in court at the Old Bailey and pleaded guilty to the murder of baby Doris. Both her family and associates testified that they were growing suspicious about her behavior and activities, and it was stated that Dyer had escaped detection on many occasions. Her daughter also gave evidence that supported Dyer's conviction, along with evidence from a man who had seen and spoken with Dyer at the time she had disposed of the two bodies at the River. The only thing her defense lawyer could do was try and go for an Insanity plea, stating that she had been committed multiple times to Asylums in Bristol. However, prosecution successfully argued that she had faked mental illness to get her into these asylums to help her further avoid detection from authorities, especially since many of the times she was committed was around the times where suspicions were getting heavy.
It only took the jury 4 and a half minutes to find Amelia Dyer guilty, and was hanged at 9AM on June 10th, 1896, at Newgate Prison.

What the actual fuck, Jean and Steve? You didn't call Naomi? I can forgive Ellen and George, their kid is in the hospital, but you two know better. Rachel, Jordan and Sarah deserved to know.
The real villains of the David trilogy: the piss poor communication of the Berenson family.

I don't understand why everyone is pretending like the Oscars and Chris Rock don't despise Jada for Oscars so white. Will Smith has been trying to get an Oscar for a decade and the Oscars snubbed him for years. In protest and due to the complete ignorance of the academy only electing white people as Oscar worthy. Quest love, parasite, and others would not have been awarded if it weren't for Jada's tenacity and influence, she literally changed Hollywood! She was not the first one to do it, but a lot of people heard about it through her. She put her career on the line for that campaign and it significantly changed the Oscars forever. Thank you Jada!
More examples below:
Token: The Oscars are far from prestigious. It's revealing that they were upset that their pandering didn't get a spotlight. The Academy doesn't care that your black "friend" didn't get to thank all the white people who got him that lame ass award. And its even more nauseating that they wanted a joke like west side story to have more visibility. Are we making generational trauma entertaining now for some reason? I'm supposed to be excited to watch a latina "winning" and Oscar for being raped? The Academy has been a racist institution for decades and they had no shame or suspensions for this behavior: Kasey Affleck was actively being investigated for a crime and still got an Oscar (no suspension), The lala land crew was completely rude an unprofesssional when they knew what happened and let the time run out for the real winners (no suspensions) attack a native American speaker (no suspension), you allow Weinstein to flourish and take over. That's only a few. The truth is that in their perspective, they cannot stand a strong black woman who actually made changes that no other man in Hollywood had the guts to do. I bet some people had hot takes for clicks, but Jada created a campaign and it worked, if anything Chris should apologize to Jada because his black ass wouldn't be hosting!
Chris Rock: Chris Rock was hired by the Oscars as a PR stunt when the racist academy did not nominate a single POC actor. He helped the Academy defend their blatant racism in an attempt to lie and decieve the audience. He was also specifically hired to attack Jada for her campaign because it was gaining a huge following. In the end, the Academy was forced to change and when all things were equal, a black man won a well deserced Oscar. They just could let that hope and change slide without manifacuturing outrage. I've seen so many videos about the slap and usually they don't even start talking about Will, they attack Jada even after WILL HIMSELF said it was his choice. The fact is that this gives everyone who hated black woman a platform to "objectively" trash someone they don't like. Blatant racism and colorism, just like the Oscars so white rants from Chris. That was not a joke, Chris is not George Carlin and it shows because you can tell he meant it and it was the PG version of what he really wants to say and everyone won't stop saying. Hollywood is being way too arrogant to realize they killed their own show.
Wanda Sykes and Jim Carrey:
Wanda needs to check her vision because it was degenerous all along. She is sitting next to someone who is absolutely diabolical. She has caused so much damage for her poor treatment and she isn't sorry because she's still on the air! What about their trauma Wanda? You can't attack someone if you have no integrity, and thats what everyone sees when you say in those ugly Ellen show chairs. Get a life, kicking a blackman on the way down will not elevate you in the eyes of the gay and straight white guys who run Hollywood.
Jim Carrey: That interview beyond pathetic and it honestly demonstrates that you're not above the people you paint at all. You wanna make fun of people for their morals, yet you tortured the staff, actors and basically everyone during that Andy Kauffman movie. If you think that interview made you relevant, you're mistaken because most people would rather see Will Smith than you. The attention grabbing and clear pageantry from some of these people is insane. If I were Will, I'd give back the Oscar and start making hit like Tom Cruise. I know Will is talented enough to pull that off.

14 Anti LO Asks
1. To the one anon: good question - how is it that the mortals dont know who Persephone is / assume she is a minor goddess and therefore its okay to mess with her but the gods (or Olympians / underworld denizens) know exactly everything about her (despite her being there only every so often and only being 20ish) - enough to say shes "wearing her signature white color" during a murder trial.
Also the reason why Persephone is wearing white is because
A). RS wanted persephone to always be "dressed as a bride" (and have Hades dressed as a groom respectively) to show that their matching / is supposed to be a visual cue that their eventually gonna be together.
B). I believe this is RS way of saying that Persephone (despite murdering some mortals) is innocent because in purity culture White = innocence, virginity, youth etc. (Even though RS explicity ssid she wanted to go against purity culture morals shes very much leaning into them).
2. why are Psyche’s eyes yellow even in her human form? Is she sick??
3. honestly? LO is just gossisp girl at this point, espect even GG (at least in the first season) bothered to saturze the rich and was calling out how wealth and power makes them corrupt assholes. meanwhile LO is just GG season 2 and on of being like no no, the poor people are the evil people and the rich people are the oppressed ones! all while also fawning over their  wealth and status and being way into grown men wanting to bang barely legal teens and claiming to be "feminist" somehow.
4. Tumblr is well-known for broken tag system. Check the post' tags before complaining that it's op's fault. How about you guys not tag greek mythology when posting about LO? LO is not one-shot or short fancomic. It's also definitely not considered actual greek mythology. LO is years long webcomic with huge fans. LO has its own tag. Tell your fellow fans to stop using the greek mythology tag.
5. I would argue nyx is the only woman with a unique in design in LO but thats only because she looks like a deformed chicken woman. why was my night mom disrespected this much 😭
6. So now that LO is back from break and I can finally read chapter 170 - Why oh Why do ALL the female characters Have to be defined by their male love interests??? (Or really just love interests in general).
I understand LO qualifies as the "romance" genre and there are certain stipulations or I guess themes or what have you that make it romance but for f*cks sake.
Psyche being worried about Eros loving the "fake" her I kinda get, but really? Thats your most pressing concern?? Hera is defined by her garbage marriage to Zeus - King of the gods (of which is why she is Queen of the gods). Hestia + Athena are now defined solely by their relationship to each other (not the TGOEM or their respective traits of being a goddess of the hearth + goddess of war, strategy etc etc).
Aphrodite is defined by giving Persephone "relationship" advice (e.g: telling her to curb stomp Minthe because "nymphs dont take things from gods" - doubly implying that people are things to own) And by her jealousy of Persephone in the first place because Hades made a comment about how he thought Persephone was prettier than her. And also because of her "house of debauchery" (Artemis'  words) - and relationship with Ares.
Persephone is defined both by Apollo raping her and by her fated future status as Queen of the underworld (so her relationship with Hades). Hell, even the minor characters such as nymphs are defined by this relationship status / standard. Minthe is defined by her mean spirited personality yes, but Also because of her abusive relationship with Hades prior to the introduction of Persephone. Psyche is defined by her relationship woes with Eros. Daphne is defined by her relationship with Thanatos (and because shes a flower nymph) but also mostly because she looks like Persephone.
Rhea is defined by her marriage / relationship to Kronos (lets ignore the whole "fertility goddess power" plot for a second). Even Aetna is defined by Haphestus creating her! Is there not a single character (especially female) is isnt defined by their romantic love interest???Sorry. Maybe I'm overthinking this, but thats definitely how ot comes off as of late, in regard to the latest chapters.
Okay, same anon as earlier - I take it back somewhat - we have Artemis and Hecate that are not defined by their romantic relationships - but rather their lack of one.
However the way they are shown - it still comes off as a standard - "Artemis is stingy / a stick in the mud" because shes not romantically involved and is "barbaric" (according to Hera). And Hecate is still somewhat defined by her being Hades' employee (and cheerleader for him and Persephone to be together).
So technically yes, we have at least 2 characters that are not defined by their romantic interests / relationships, but they are still held to the standard of their "un-ladylike / undesirable" because their not romantically involved.
(I guess I should count Demeter, but only because shes more defined by just being "Persephone's overbearing mom" )
7. i think whats also kinda weird about this trial is like?? persephone is obvs framed as not liking the attention (bc duh) but she didnt like the previous press either, she wanted to be private, but wouldnt being with hades force her to be in the spotlight that makes her uncomfortable? also the citizens of the underworld already dislike hades, why would they want a uncontrollable felon as their queen, even if she found innocent? idk the whole thing just makes the endgame less plausible, tbh.
8. love that rachel was able to find a random deity name to name her random nymph the greek word for "beans" meanwhile apparently cant google actual greek names for even one off characters? like andrew, ellen, george, alexis, damian, luke, phoebe, sophia, and so any other english names are also greek, but she cant even bother with that? what exactly is her "research" if she cant even bother to spend 30 seconds googling greek names? at this point LO seems determined to be as un-Greek as possible.
9. wait so everyone in LO went from having no idea who persephone was, to her only showing up on ONE magazine cover, to now being the most well known person with a signature color? all in the span of two weeks with no genuine public outings? how does that make sense? also white isnt even her signature color if 90%+ the female cast and even a lot of the men ((including ZEUS) all wear it too.
10. the fact the courthouse WASNT the areopagus, aka the place in greece where they say the first ever trial ever happened and where the court system was invented, is just another point of rachel talking out her ass about being "respectful" or "researched" on greece and their mythology. its literally one of the most famous mythology spots ever with some fantastic stories to it and she's just like "nah! boring rectangle will do!" like why even both with mythology then if its this devoid of it?
11. Anons are saying Hades in the FS chapter is leaning down and talking to Persy like a child. Say it aint true.
(I wanna see. I thought RS was finally giving Persy adult proportions). 😨
12. So wait, hold up. I kinda get where RS is coming from with the law school in the underworld (because Hades is supposed to be a kinda Judge, jury, executioner situation in the afterlife when it comes to mortals and their "punishments" and whatnot). However, is RS stating that the ONLY law school / courthouse exists in the underworld? If so, why? Why wouldn't Athena be there then. She's a goddess of strategy and justice (among other things).
Also is RS really implying that Hades owns not only the banks and underworld but the law too? She really wants Hades to be a Gary Sue along side her Mary Sue - Hades controls everything that matters and since its his realm and blah blah blah rules, Zeus, king of the gods cant do anything about it.
(Which is dumb. Because you would think that because Persephone committed the crime in the mortal realm / on, or near Olympus that therefore she would be brought back there to dole out justice under Zeus jurisdiction because she committed the crime in His Realm).
13. FP Spoiler ahead:
Why on earth couldn't the reporters have Greek names? There is so much wrong and bad with this story, yet this irks me so much. It is Brenda all over again.
14. i dont really get the point of the trial plotline, tbh. even persephone says she should be punished and held accountable, but hades is framed in the right for trying to go against that and weasel her out of it. so?? plus zeus has legit reason to punish them? persephone is a danger to others, demeter and hermes both committed treason to cover it up, and hades was harboring a fugitive of the law and is now trying to force the system to let her go. how is zeus in the wrong for this?

the real story of amélie from arthur’s route
Tumblr media
hey hey! it’s been a long time! i have been quite busy these past weeks with finals and the summer break.
i also want to start writing hcs, so if you have any requests don’t hesitate to send them to me!
today i wanted to write about a story that i read not too long ago that really coincides with the evil character of amelie in arthur’s route.
a lot of people might have actually already heard of it, she is known as history’s most cruel murderer.
Tumblr media
the person we are going to talk about lived in the period of victorian england and was sometimes suspected to have a link with jack the ripper, the serial killer who terrorized the inhabitants of whitechapel.
in other words, she is called the ogress of reading or the victorian ogress and the trial of these murders has been the subject of much attention, especially because she preyed on very young children. Let me tell you the terrifying story of a monster who disguised herself as a warm and loving mother figure
the story of the infamous amelia elisabeth dyer
Tumblr media
an ordinary family
our story begins in 1836 in the port city of bristol in england. the hobley family welcomes the arrival of a fifth child, a lovely little girl called amelia elisabeth. the little amelia is very lucky, in a time when poverty reigns in the united kingdom she knows a respectable education, learns to read and to love poetry. however the luck ends quickly as amelia’ mother caught typhus, an illness that showed her a lot of psychological problems. amelia had to take care of her mother until she passes away from her illness. after her mother’s death, the girl loses contact with most of her family members. meanwhile, amelia starts seeing george thomas, a 59 year old man, much older than her, who was only 25 at the time (long live the sugar daddies!). they planned to get married and to avoid gossip, they both lied about their date of birth on the day of the ceremony. (amelia pretended that she was 32 and george 48)
Tumblr media
during her marriage, amelia learned to be a nurse but she doesn't have time to forge a real career as her husband dies leaving her alone with their children who are still very young. it's already not easy to raise a child alone nowadays but imagine what it was like at that time when england was in the middle of the victorian period, the industrial revolution changed the shape of the cities and saw the emergence of new social classes. in london and other major british cities, poverty has invaded the neighborhoods and the poor have few options to get by. some live in workhouses which reduce them more or less in slavery for a mouthful of bread while others choose criminality to support themselves.
Tumblr media
however, amelia remembers ellen dane, a midwife in her building with whom she got along quite. she had told her that to earn more money she had become a baby farmer.
it is a profession which does not exist any more today but was rather widespread in the 19th century. now, it should not be forgotten that this england inherited puritanism and considered that to have a child out of marriage was a horrible sin. if that came to be known, the young women concerned risked big and could lose their reputation and their work. especially that, at that time, one did not consider that the father had a role to play in the event of unwanted pregnancy. also, it was obviously out of question to abort except clandestinely which was at the same time illegal and very dangerous. all that to say that when an unwanted child came to the world most women preferred to give it up rather than risk public humiliation. but abandonment was also illegal, and none of them wanted to risk the death penalty if their actions came public. this is precisely where the baby farmers intervene. when a woman fell pregnant and did not want to keep the child, she had to put an ad in the newspapers and leave her child to a farmer.the baby would be taken care of and fed until the farm finds a new family. it was a sort of clandestine human trafficking, and sometimes the farmers even housed the mothers in their homes during their pregnancy in order to hide their big bellies.
Tumblr media
the birth of the monster
soon, the ogress settles in reading close to london and publishes advertisements where she presents herself as a respectable woman to marry, capable of providing a healthy environment and filled with affection to the children that she intends to collect like the other farmers. she asks for money to be able to look after them. amelia quickly realizes that it is much more profitable to keep the money rather than to use it for feeding and educating the children. and so little by little the treatments that she inflicts on the children become more and more dire (spoiler: she doesn’t take care of them anymore). and even worse, she even drugs the children to prevent them from crying because of hunger. the kids often die of malnutrition and infantile diseases. it is absolutely terrible and yet it is far from being unusual, in fact orphans were very often victims of abuse and many of the baby farmers were far from being trustworthy people. a lot took advantage of the distress of the mothers ready to do anything to keep their secret and these so-called “baby farmers” would leave the children to die in order to pocket the money without any effort. when the mothers asked for news of their children, they often got no answer and when a family wanted to get a child back, the farmer gave them another one instead.
amelia very quickly became addicted to the drugs she used on the children as she couldn’t stand the crying and the presence of the orphans anymore. she decides to move on to a more radical option: directly eliminating the children she is entrusted with.
at first, she will choose to poison them and claim an infantile disease, but the doctor who came to attest the death of the infants shows himself a little suspicious (at the same time, she gives him a case every week or so :/). in short, the guy warned the authorities so that they could investigate on amelia. but no luck, she manages to get away with negligence with a simple sentence of forced labor. and moreover, she decided to opt for a more brutal method for her future murders. that is to say, she was going to strangle them as soon as she was allowed to keep them, pocket the money and look for a new child to start all over again. and this will go on for years, sometimes at the rate of six babies a day, no need to declare the deaths, she got rid of them herself, wrapping them in cloth or old clothes, and then she left to burn them in an isolated place to hide them or throw them in the thames. and when she felt that the authorities could trace the dead children back to her, she simulates a nervous breakdown and suicidal desires and runs off to a psychiatric hospital. she even tried to kill herself once by overdosing to escape an overly suspicious mother who was asking for her child. except that by consuming opiates she had become hyper resistant and the dose that she took was not enough to kill her. she then moved often and took on different identities to prevent the police from finding her and understanding who she really was and this little merry-go-round worked for a long time, a very long time, even, but not indefinitely...
Tumblr media
ambush and arrest
in january 1896, a waitress named evelyna marmon gave birth to an illegitimate daughter named doris. she was looking for someone to take care of her and very soon she came across the ad of a certain mrs. harding who wrote "married couple, without children, want to adopt a child in good health in a beautiful country house, price: 10£”. necessarily for this young mother, it is a godsend and the two women contact each other. and here is what mrs. harding replied, "I would be happy to have a dear little girl, one that I will be able to raise like my own. we are a united couple of fairly good conditions. I do not want a child for the lure of gain but to accompany the comfort of the house. my husband and I love children but we do not have any. with me, this child will have a good house as well as all the love of a mother". at this stage you can guess that mrs. harding is in fact amelia dyer who took a false name and who continued with her macabre activities. doris gets taken from the waitress by “mrs. harding” who confirms by letter that the child is doing well, after that she doesn’t give any more news. spoiler: the child did not have more than a few hours to live. once the crime is committed, because yes, it’s done already. amelia covers the body of doris with another child in fabric and travels to the edge of the thames to throw them under the eyes of a man who seemed to observe her but who didn’t address a word to her.
Tumblr media
in this kind of case, one wonders “where tf is the police??” well they were on the point of starting a very interesting investigation... on march 30th 1896, the police force finds the lifeless body of helena fry, a baby of hardly 15 months who floated on the waters of the river wrapped in a brown cloth. for the authorities, it is obviously a murder since the child was strangled. they later found on the cloth, a half erased writing which resembles an address. this address is amélia’s, who is now 58 years old; the police then trace her and set up a trap.
basically what they did was to use a young woman as a cover, she pretended to need a farmer to look after her child and as expected it was amelia who answered her directly. so that's how the police organized an ambush at the murderer's house. what first shocked the policemen was especially the unbearable smell which reigned in the house because of the decomposition of certain corpses, they also found meters of edging tape which she used to strangle her victims, and also telegrams testifying of all the adoptions made as well as letters of mothers who asked for news of their children. so yes, there is a lot of evidence to charge her for, especially as they found at least seven more bodies by dredging the thames after her arrest. the bodies clearly had a white mark around their neck probably because of the tape she used to kill the children with. we also know that about twenty children under her care at that time were missing but for the rest it's impossible to know the exact number of amelia's victims. in fact, it is estimated that in 20 years she would have killed between 200 and 400 newborn babies, that's why she is said to be the most prolific serial killer in history.
Tumblr media
her sentence and death
in spite of this very important number of victims amelia will be accused for only one crime, the one of the little doris. except that she very quickly confessed a quantity of other murders and tried to commit suicide twice while she was incarcerated. the defense pleaded madness and because she had spent time in asylum the doctors that she had managed to manipulate were able to confirm that was unstable. she herself said that the children she had killed died peacefully; that they were called back by God who was someone who could love them more than anyone on this earth, she said that she had simply made angels and that one day she would sit beside the Lord Almighty. her breakdowns of madness always coincided strangely with the moment when the police approached, so we can think that it was more of simulation and calculation than true dementia. the jury took hardly five minutes to return its verdict, the crimes were so horrible that her mental state could not do much anyways.
amelia was thus condemned to the death penalty. on june 10th 1896, amelia dyer walks towards the scaffold, she decided not to appeal by hearing her verdict and wrote herself five notebooks of confession before her execution that she entrusted to a priest. she tells inside them to have taken pleasure in seeing her victims dying. before her execution, one asked her if she had any last words to pronounce but she answered that she did not have anything to add. at 9 o’clock sharp, the woman who was called the ogresse of reading was hanged. following these tragic events the controls of the adoptions and the activities of the baby farmers were reinforced, new laws were also put in place to protect the children and the mothers and the advertisements in the newspapers were supervised. that said, it still took a certain number of years before child trafficking was seriously supervised…
that’s all for the story! it is a very horrific case and i can’t even imagine what the children must have gone through. i also think we can all agree with the similarities with the character of amélie in arthur’s route.

Smokey brand Retrospective: The Gift and the Curse
Tumblr media
Brendan Fraser has seen a resurgence lately and i love every bit of that. Dude has been one of my favorite actors for decades. I’m an Eighties kid who grew up during the Nineties so i was right there when he came onto the scene. I was a massive fan f all of his early work; Bedazzled, George of the Jungle, Encino Man, Airheads, Blast from the Past, and even Monkeybone. Dude hit his stride right around the Aughts and then completely disappeared. We found out later it was because of some really f*cked up sh*t but he made it through and proved he still had with Robot Man on Doom Patrol. I’m so glad this guy got another shot at this movie star sh*t but i wanted to revisit the franchise that put him on the map: The Mummy.
The Mummy
Tumblr media
I love this campy ass flick, man. I saw this one in the theaters because, at the time, i was super into CG. It had only been a few years since Jurassic Park blew that sh*t out the water and only a few months after The Matrix made everyone sh*t the bed. The Mummy just missed that window but it was still incredibly enjoyable. This was my Indiana Jones because i didn’t care about Indy for a long time. It’s not that they were bad movies, i was just too young to appreciate them. The Mummy came out right at the time i started to really understand why i liked cinema, what a good permanence truly was, and how beautiful a film could be. The Mummy covered almost all of those bases. Fraser did an excellent job as Rick O’Connor and Rachel Weisz stunned as Evelyn Carnahan. F*cking Evie, man. I was already a fan of Fraser but this movie made me really pay attention to Weisz and she became one of my favorite actresses. It helps tremendously that she is f*cking gorgeous! Rounding out the cast is John Hannah as Evie’s brother, Johnathan and Arnold Vosloo as the titular mummy, Imhotep. Also, i can’t not mention the scummiest of scumbags, Benny, portrayed so effortlessly by Kevin J. O'Connor.
I absolutely adore this film. It’s a not the best example of Nineties cinema, how can it be, and it’s a terrible remake of the original Universal Mummy but it does what it wants to do very well. I love the ideas and the world they built with this campy clusterf*ck. It shouldn’t work, it should be terrible, but it’s one of the funnest films i have ever seen. It has it’s issues, absolutely, but they are minor compared the non-stop action, the incredible cinematography, the dated but ambitious CG effects ,and solid performances from every principal actor. They really let Fraser do his thing and that energy carried over to the rest of the cast. Evie is every bit the bad ass as Sarah Connor or Ellen Ripley but is still a very girly-girl; Something that seems to be frowned upon nowadays. Imhotep id an unrelenting, vicious antagonist who controls powers from long ago, literally willing the seven plagues of Egypt into modern times. This movie is all over the f*cking place but it worse so well and every time i see it, i have as much fun as i did way back when i was a ripened fourteen years old.
The Mummy Returns
Tumblr media
Boy, this one suffers terrible from Sequelitis. It does nothing new and is an almost exact retread of the first film but we have new characters and a new villain in the guise of... The Scorpion King! Yes, this is the first film that titular Arachno-Monarch makes his first appearance portrayed by a very young, very beefy, and later, very poorly rendered, Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson! That’s right, long before he was Franchise Viagra, way before he was punching out Dom into a stalemate in them god awful Fast flicks, The Rock got his start here, in the sequel to The Mummy and he’s f*cking terrible! Oh my god, is he bad but it works. His awful, awful, performance fits right in with the utter camp of this ridiculous franchise ans, to no one’s surprise, i loved every second of it. Now, as much as i love The Rock in this thing, i have to absolutely give it to Patricia Velasquez as Meela Nais, the physical reincarnation of Imhotep’s regicide partner and f*ck-buddy, Anck-Su-Namun. I didn’t talk about her much in the entry about The Mummy but that as mostly because she was more a plot device rather than a character. She isn’t much else in this one either but at least we got to actually see her for more than ten minutes. Plus, that fight between her and Nefertiri was f*cking glorious. Sixteen year old Smokey appreciated the f*ck out of that.
The returning cast hits their points perfectly. That chemistry never falters. Fraser, Weisz, and Hannah are exceptional together and Vosloo is, somehow, both far more menacing and hilarious at the same time. There’s this scene toward the end where he is utterly defeated and it’s the funniest sh*t i have ever seen. I also really enjoy both Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay far more in this one than the last because he gets to do sh*t finally. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was also a welcome surprise as  the muscle, Lock-Nah. Dude just kinds of stands around and i think he gets into a fight with Fehr that was pretty cool but a little trite. Obviously, as a film from the early Aughts, it has it;s problems. There’s a ton of culturally insensitive sh*t that Zoomers would probably be upset about but, you know, f*ck em. It’s like a sense f humor is illegal nowadays. That said, having Rachel Weisz, as gorgeous and half-naked as she is and was, portray an Egyptian is a little much nowadays. At least Patricia Velasquez is a type of Brown? An attempt was made. This thing is a mess and i enjoy every second of it. The Mummy Returns is substantially worse that the first but, at the same time, just so batsh*t that it is equally as entertaining. But f*ck that kid, though. Every time he’s onscreen all of the good times are thrown right out the goddamn window!
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Tumblr media
I gave this one the hard pass for years. It looked like trash. Like straight up dog sh*t. This thing came out seven years after Returns and i just didn’t care. I was one hundred percent in my hipster film snob era and couldn’t be bothered. For a full f*cking decade and some change. Seriously, i just watched this thing the day before yesterday. For the first time. It was the inspiration for this retrospective because, after seeing this train wreck, i went back to check out the first two just to get the taste of dogsh*t out of my mouth. There are several changes made to the formula that immediately take me out of this film. First, and most egregiously, no more Rachel Weisz! She didn’t come back for the third. The reason behind her absence has run the gambit from vanity, to scheduling conflicts, to literally never getting a script. I don;t really care why, all i know is that her absence was felt. Maria Bello did her best but she isn’t MY Evie. Another “choice” was to age up that awful f*cking kid into an awful f*cking adult. That’s right, this is a “passing of the torch flick” and Luke Ford’s Alex O'Connell was supposed to take over the franchise going forward. That didn’t happen because this is Rick’s franchise. The Mummy would be nothing without Fraser and the at was proven when this thing tanked. It wasn’t all bad though. I really liked the new mummy, Han. They did some really fin things with his abilities and Jet Li never once phoned in an action scene. Unfortunately, even with the strength of the brand and outstanding lead performances, this thing still sucks.
I had a time with Tomb but it wasn’t like the time i had with it’s predecessors. I don’t know if it’s because I'm so much older and hardened by life but all i see is the flaws in this one. It doesn’t have the nostalgia goggles like the first two so i can’t enjoy it like i enjoy those. I just see plot holes instead of camp. Bad CG instead of rustic attempt. Poor set pieces instead of Nineties jank. Bad character writing instead of unfortunately hilarious dialogue. Tomb isn’t terrible but it ain’t good wither. It;s mediocre and i know the first two aren’t great but they’re better than whatever this wanted to be. It’s weird to see because there are a lot of great ideas here. I can see the vision that lays outside the margins and it’s frustrating. Fraser does is in his element as Rick and Li’s Han is a physical powerhouse but that’s not enough. As awesome as this movie gets when those two are on screen, literally everything around them is dismissible and i don’t understand how or why. I think a lot of the chemistry was lost when the focus was shifted to Alex from Rick and the recasting of Eve really didn’t do this film any favors. However, even with all of my frustrations, i can’t say i had a terrible time with this thing. It was entertaining, if a little bogus.

I can barely breathe when you are near.
I’m just gonna say I totally loved the show. Mad love.
And in case you haven’t figure it out yet, or watched the show to get it, I’m talking about Ginny and Georgia.
So many important topics touched on so many feelings and oh so many love triangles.
So join me as i dissect the whole show hehe .
Alright basic plot-
Young single mom Georgia and her teenage daughter Ginny, and younger son Austin, are always on the road and have now moved across the country to the small town of Wellsbury, Massachusetts from Texas, where they encounter a whole load of quirky characters. Ginny, who never had friends, slowly starts fitting in with the popular sophomores, mainly her neighbour Maxine, who also has a twin brother Marcus while Georgia befriends their mother Ellen. The series follows their attempts and struggles of fitting in with the town, all while developing their own love triangles (square in Georgia’s case). And the best part is, the unfolding of Georgia’s dark past filled with teen mom struggles and a little bit of murder mystery as to how she has gotten to where she is now.
Teen mom and daughter combo again? Been there done that!
Well yes, as everyone compares it to Gilmore Girls (my personal favourite show ever) here are some similarities and differences as well as other show references.
*SPOILERS!!
It does explore that close relationship that Ginny and Georgia have, but obviously the kind of bond that Rory and Lorelai had were a lot stronger and had their own personal quirks and wit. There were often rifts in G&G’s relationship caused by the secrets of Georgia’s past as well as Ginny feeling inferior to her own mother in terms of looks and her ability to be a chameleon to fit in anywhere. Rory was more focused on her grades and was comfortable just having her few friends. Ginny on the other hand wanted to be liked and wanted to fit in with her school friends and eventually becomes part of MANG and the boys. And in the case of the mothers, Lorelai focused on raising Rory and worked her way up to eventually owning her own Inn while Georgia snuck and tiptoed her way around swindling money wherever she could but all in the best intentions of her kids more than herself, desperate to give her kids the life she never had.
Also in a way I feel like this is also similar to Jane the Virgin except of course Jane’s character is older, but if you take the standpoint of the mother-daughter relationship and love triangle(Jane/Rafael/Michael) as well as a little psychotic Murder mystery Petra vibes.
, I feel like G&G is a good mix of Gilmore and JTV.
When it comes to love interests, Ginny was stuck between boyfriend Hunter and neighbour Marcus. Sweet, innocent Hunter (my favourite character in the whole series because if you know me you’d know I’m a hopeless romantic) was pretty much Dean to Rory, while cool skater and stoner guy Marcus was Jess. And honestly I see a similar trend here where most people are Team Jess/Marcus whereas I’m team Dean/Hunter for the main fact that Dean and Hunter both treated the girls really good and I like that.
Georgia, as I mentioned was more of in a love square than a triangle, because why the hell not right? There’s Joe, the owner of the cafe where everyone spends most of their time, then there’s Mayor Paul, who Georgia pushes her way to work for to get on his good side. And then of course, Zion, Ginny’s father. Sounds a lot like Luke, Jason and Christopher doesn’t it. I love that Joe had a more interesting and different story, where it was depicted in the flashback scene where homeless young Georgia, just found out she was pregnant at a gas station and comes out to a crowd of high schoolers, which is when she meets Joe. She says to him  “I’ll look you up if I’m ever in Wellsbury” Joe was already attracted to her as a teenager and doesn’t realise it’s the same Georgia he met years ago till the last episode whereas Georgia has known all this while. I don’t know about you but I feel like now Georgia has the funds to move to somewhere she aspired to be, where she knows her kids will get the best and where she received “a sandwich and a pair of raybans that changed my life” Also let me just add that Raymond Ablack (Joe) is INCREDIBLY HOT.
Moving on to Paul, Georgia is attracted to him but there is that underlying greed because Paul can provide her stability and security and power. And that is when she will finally feel like she has achieved wheat she needs to. Towards the end, she almost chooses Zion because of her deep affection for him as ‘her penguin’ as she refers to him as. Being with Zion also means she can let her guard down and relax a little, and obviously is a great father to Ginny and even Austin who isn’t even his biologically. Which also makes both guys equally good contenders for Georgia.
Another thing I love about the show is MANG. Their friendship is real, it’s not just Abby and Norah accepting Ginny because of Max. Yes Abby did throw her under the bus in the beginning but they soon became really close and never singled her out after the shoplifting incident. It wasn’t a whole case of Regina George and the plastics all over again. They didn’t care that she was different.
So I feel like Abby is a very interesting character also. I read that her character was created based on a friend of the writer. So abby puts up a very strong front when actually she is feeling quite distraught from her parents ongoing divorce as well as her own issues with body image. Abby is very petite but still is not satisfied with her body so she tapes her thighs to make them look smaller and wear tight jeans so that she can look slimmer. I the Halloween episode, Press even calls her “whale legs” and she obviously gets upset and you can see it affects her because she’s striving for such a perfect image all the time but also I feel like she has a thing for Press so that really messes her up. You can also see she does get a little jealous of Ginny and Max’s friendship but that’s mainly because she feels lonely and unheard and she ends off being estranged from Norah and Max feeling like her whole world crumbled. I really hope MANG gets to patch up. They were the ideal friend group along with the guys.
“Oppression Olympics, let’s go.”
I don’t know guys, this line really stood out to me.
Basically this is the scene in episode 8 where Ginny and Hunter argue about racism and why Ginny deserved to win that writing contest with her unique style (girl used slam poetry for goodness sake that essay was amazing!!??) But Hunter won and he is clearly the favourite of their teacher. He talks about how he is half Taiwanese and the Asian stereotypes he faces here as well as the White remarks he gets from the Asian side of his family. Ginny too says she can’t fit in because she is half Black and how this town had a very small black population and people are not sure how to look at her. I feel like touching on these topics of race was really vital to not only the show but to the actors as well. From the bts, I read that Antonia (Ginny) and Mason (Hunter) were in a room with the writer and jus spoke about the kind of remarks they have personally faced which helped develop the argument scene because it was so real and raw and quite upsetting to watch. It’s something very relatable to the audience which also just amplified that whole episode overall.
I mentioned earlier my favourite character is Hunter. I admit I have a major crush on both the actor and the fictional character. Ok so I think Hunter was a great character, a very good boyfriend too, I mean look at the way he cared for Ginny, supported her, just that unfortunately she was more attracted to Marcus in the end but also that ugly oppression olympics fight just gave his character more depth to show that Hunter wasn’t as perfect as he seemed. I think girls watching the show deserved to see what a good guy looked like. He was smart, in a band, a very caring boyfriend, popular but not cocky. If you compare to let’s say the character if Peter Kavinsky, I think Hunter made a better boyfriend. DO i also think Kavinsky is a damn dream boat? Of course I do. but then again, I thought John Ambrose was a much better guy in the TATB series. Kavinsky was originally dating another girl before the whole fake couple thing started. Whereas going back to Hunter, he already admired Ginny from the first episode and stayed truly respectful until the end of the show. And that’s something girls should see and aspire to have.
Yes I loved the song I loved the fact that he sang it for her, I am such a hopeless romantic and I absolutely hate that poor Hunter/Mason has been getting a lot of backlash for the song/character. I’ve rewatched a lot of the Hunter/Ginny scenes multiple times just because. Hunter was a good guy. Period.
So looking forward, I think a lot of important topics were touched in this show, slightly different from let’s say 13 Reasons Why, and I hope that they can continue to delve into those stories such as racism, self harm, body image and so on which really hit home for me. Important discussion topics, important for kids to see like oh hey this character is kinda like me, and if they are facing these issues, how can they get through it?
Also I need answers to all my questions - Where did Ginny go? How does Georgia get away with everything? Will MANG get back together? Does Abby have a deeper story to tell? Do Marcus and Ginny end up together? AND WHAT ABOUT MY POOR BBY HUNTER??? Lots of unanswered questions, lots of stories to dig deeper into, and so many secrets. I loved the mother l-daughter relationship, the same way I loved Lorelai and Rory’s relationship too.
I obviously totally enjoyed the show, I’ve recommended it to many friends and I hope they enjoy it as much as I do, and get more people on my Hunter Chen bandwagon hahahaha! Let’s hope for a season 2!!
Another super long post, finally done. I can move on to watching other shows now (and still constantly wish I too had cool stuff like Sophomore sleepover)
Hate you, kidding! Love you, mean it!
