Communing with Fire & The East Road In Appalachia: "Fire on the Mountain" Protection Oil

The arrival of the Spring Equinox in the Appalachian Mountains heralds a time of transition and renewal, where the earth awakens from its winter slumber and bursts forth with new life. As a traditional mountain practitioner, this shift in seasons brings a change in focus and direction along my crooked path.

Spring is aligned with the energies of the East Road, representing dawn, the rising sun, and the Red Spirits of Fire. It is a time of awakening and transformation, where the chthonic fire of the Red Serpent/Dragon ignites the landscape with its primal energy. The song "Fire on the Mountain" echoes through the hills, carrying the power and vitality of the season.

In the tradition of Old Mother Red-Cap, Spring is associated with power, protection, purification, and defensive magick. It is a time for working with candle magick, solar magick, and tapping into the potent energies of sexuality and desire. The inner flame of witch fire burns brightly, fueled by cunning and will.

The tools and regalia of Spring include the knife/athame (some say wands), symbolizing the cutting away of old patterns and the clearing of obstacles and protection; the broom, representing purification and the sweeping away of negative energies; and the lamp/lantern/candle, serving as a beacon of light and guidance along the path.

As I embrace the energies of Spring in the Appalachian Mountains, may I harness the power of the season to manifest all my desires, protect myself and my loved ones, and walk my crooked path with strength, courage, and cunning.

"Fire on The Mountain" Protection Oil:

"Fire on the Mountain" is similar to a Fiery Wall of Protection Oil, which both have protective properties and folk magick associations. Both are rooted in the tradition of creating a shield of defense against negative energy, psychic attacks, curses, hexes, or jinxes.

Fire on The Mountain is designed to establish a barrier of protection around oneself or a space. It serves as a potent tool for defensive magick and is infused with fiery herbs and ingredients, helping to ward off harm and create a sense of safety and security.

As with many folk magick rituals, there are numerous variations of this type of protection oil, each with its own blend of ingredients and methods of preparation. These variations often reflect the unique practices and traditions of different cultural and regional groups. This blend is one from my own personal sources.

Readers Note:

If you decide to use the carrier oils/base oils listed... I suggest sticking to more of a Castor oil base with a few drops of Neem oil blended in for protective & fortifying properties. Neem oil plain stinks and is pricey! Personally, I also don't suggest rubbing this oil on any walls or surfaces that can easily stain...Castor oil is crazy thick and will leave a forever oil stain on any porous surface you apply it to...ask me how I know lol. A "Nailing Down" ritual or protective enchanting of a ward, or candle magick is great for this oil. As always, you are welcome to stick to a neutral base instead if you don't want to use the suggested oils. (Check my "Carrier Oils Post" below for other oils and their properties)

Make sure to ground your Dragon's Blood Resin well before blending. I know Dragon's Blood is wickedly expensive but I will say a little will go a long way. Plus, dragon's blood is one of those ingredients you just can't beat and it stores super well, and for a long time after... the more it's used, the more of a protective shield it creates... think the wall part of "fiery wall of protection". Personally, I like making this oil smell great... so I also include a few drops of Dragon's Blood Fragrance oil. When I sell this oil, the fragrance is one of its most complimented features.

Now for an optional 2-punch combo, you can add a pinch of Sulfur and Ash to your master jar or bottle... Literally just a pinch of each!!!! Too much and it will muddle your oil and the sulfur will have your oil smelling like an eggy fart lol. Also, make sure to use Brimstone Sulfur... you can get it on Amazon. Many gardeners use sulfur for their plants. Sulfur can be used as a baneful ingredient but it is also great protection and a hex-breaker. Ash is used in this oil for the suffocation of any malevolent energy being sent.

You can make this oil with whatever ritual you would like... On a Sunday in the hour of the Sun, On a Tuesday in the hour of Mars, Under a Full Moon in a fire sign, Under the noon Sun, during a fire ritual or ceremony, or just make it with no ritual at all. It's really up to you. The ingredients and herbs have their magick.

How To: Sunflowers

I don’t always feel like a girl, or a girly girl for that matter, but I have always loved getting flowers from anyone. And my favorite flowers are Sunflowers. I could not tell you why, but they always make me smile...real or fake. So this year, I decided to grow my own! See my turquoise thumb turning green slowly...

So this post is all about Sunflowers, there is so much about them that would shock people. Also, when I was attempting to “learn as I go” and “educate myself through google”...there was not a lot of information out there. So I am choosing to be part of the solution by making this post.

Types of Sunflowers: They come in so many shapes and sizes. Just going to Home Depot I found a couple of these and have grown them. More info here: https://gardenerspath.com/plants/flowers/best-sunflower-varieties/

Bugs you find on them: In any garden, flowers and foods bring bugs-its the circle of life. But man, besides not being so weird about bugs...I discovered bugs I had never even seen or heard of before. Helpful vs Non-Helpful Bugs: Not all bugs are bad bugs, like your bees and ladybugs are your friends. There is a balance that is impossible to keep in place out in the wild. Like I love providing for the world I think we take too much from, but then I also want my flowers to survive. So for the bugs that throw that balance off, I like Neem Oil.

How to grow them: I would plant them in good dirt, with more space between them than you think they need. Planting in Spring is good, maybe even winter as their season is Summer/Autumn. Watering once or twice a day is enough. To help their growth, you can set up long sticks with a string fence so they have something to lean against. Once they start coming in, trim any leaves that are dead-new leaves and buds will grow.

How to Prune Them: So once you have some growing, they don’t stop. I would get a step stool so you can reach the top. Stalks come in all variety of height and thickness. You can get one sprout on one stalk, or multiple sprouts on one stalk, or multiple stalks out of one seed plant. Trimming leaves, leave the first half or third of leaves towards the top. If a plant has more than one bloom, it can handle more aggressive pruning. Single blooms need all the leaves they can get. The way a normal person thinks a sunflower looks are the middle stages. The flower itself will change shape as it reaches the end of its short life, when the leaves start falling off and the inside of the flower changes-cut the head off. The head becomes very heavy closer to death and you could loose the stalk, and the stalk could support future buds in the growing season. Once your season is done, cut down the stalks. Some flowers grow back, and some need to be replanted.

This is my first year growing them, I have not yet tried to seed them. Maybe that will be a growth goal for next year. I really want to make an outdoor seating area where I sit in a wall of sunflowers and meditate. I am thinking of following up this post with a fun facts about sunflowers post or my photos, or both. this is once again a plea for the fandom to get over a minute long statue scene that is honestly kinda funny to enjoy some of the beauties of the rest of this episode. Anon, firstly I want to welcome you to tumblr, this may be the best or worst decision of your life.

As for Haikyuu Writers, I have some friends who write some god tier fics and other blogs I follow who content just knocks it out the park

@karasu-hoes : she has completed a kinktober event and I can safely say the smut is *chef kiss*. daisy is on hiatus at the moment but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t plenty of haikyuu goodness on her blog. (has done fluff and nsfw alphabets for some of our haikyuu cuties). Also very funny but a bit of a diva (love you lots daisy)

@honey-makki: another sinner who writes the best smut (camboy kenma anyone??). kristen has plenty of haikyuu content to keep you entertained for hours, be it fluff,smut or angst it is all there waiting for you. (also kristen i am about to reblog the akaashi alphabet). Also a very nice mutual

@crushzone: I could write a dissertation about why this blog is the hub for haikyuu. Thus far, I think Nin has just written smut with maybe one fluff but either way the quality of the work is just amazing (I feel like I am in a movie when I read your works- I recommend Blue Petal). She is also a very good artist and has done Haikyuu kinktober drawings, which are saucy to say the least.

@dinosaurtsukki: Funniest Haikyuu blog out there, her hq buzzfeed unsolved headcanons are a hoot. Whilst this blog is on the more crack and humerous side it still makes it a very good read. I am always laughing knowing that Dino headcanons tanaka being passed out at a party or oikawa being a keen knitter. This blog is always full of susprises.

@sugawara-sweetheart: One of the best haikyuu blogs out there, caters to all genres being it comfort (I remember requesting an emergancy period headcanons for ennoshita and oikawa and she did not diasppoint) to something perhaps a little darker in theme, in Neem’s candy shop it is all there. Also she posts content very frequently (sometimes I think she is nocturnal) so you will never go a day without seeing the haikyuu cuties.

@sugardaddykenma: (you don’t actually know me but I love your blog). Another god tier blog, anything you can possible imagine to have a headcannon has one ( I don’t know if that made any sense). My personal faves are “HQ on the phone contact names for s/o” and their views on astrology. Of course there is a plethora of content on this blog so during lockdown you will never get bored because this person is always posting new content too. This blog is worth a follow, source: trust me bro

@mrs-kuroojinguji: (again hiya don’t know me too well but keep up the good work and that). This blog is so good at the haikyuu characterisation and it is very evidant through her writing that she really thinks about how each character will react to the situation. It is refreshing to see because as you know in the fandom there can be a lot of mischaracterisation. Some of my personal favourite works of hers was the Haikyuu characters deepest fears and her love language mini series. She just makes the characters feel so real. Also done kinktober and I believe she is the middle of fluffvember too.

BONUS- @ceo-of-daichi: follow this blog if you love a man called Daichi Sawamura because it is basically the hub for him (she did do ennoshita headcanons for my birthday tho so there is that too)

it hurts when atsumu comes home one day and sits beside osamu on the couch, grinning wide as he takes a small velvet box out of his pocket. the diamond gleams in the light.

it hurts for osamu to have to force a smile and wish his brother luck on the proposal, even if he loves you too when he isn’t supposed to.

The Rebel Princess - Final Review (SPOILERS)

I tend to be quite critical right after I watch the finale of a drama since emotions are high, so my review might be a little harsh. My feelings might simmer over the next few days while I digest things, but for now, I’ll break down my impressions into 3 parts: The “Good”, The “Didn’t Make Sense”, and The “Could Have Been Better”.

The “Good”

The final scene. That’s the first immediate good thing that comes to mind. That’s probably the only good thing tbh. To be clear, these last 5 episodes weren’t bad. Everyone got their comeuppance, our leads live happily ever after, and Wang Su finally sees the light and goes against Daddy Wang by saving baby Jing’er. But, there were quite a number of things that frustrated me while watching.

I will note one other good thing, which is that we got to see our favourite OTP act out a show to misdirect the rebels in hiding and lure them out. We finally get to see our leads collaborating and putting their smarts together! But, this meant that they had to separate again for the millionth time in this drama. And even though it was just an act, the fake confrontation scene between them still stung. As a trashy romantic, I wish we got to see more scenes of them together, especially towards the end of the drama.

The “Didn’t Make Sense”

But because we finally get to see them work together, I wished we got to see more scenes with them plotting together. This is the first time that they’re working together to uncover a political plot, and yet it’s only relegated to one short conversation scene between them after Awu returns from meeting with her brother who refuses to tell her who’s behind the scenes pulling the ropes.

ALSO, the drama never really addressed how Xiao Qi kind of handwaved Zitan’s involvement in the Neem Yu Shan plot. How did Xiao Qi go from “I need to have vengeance for my betrayed fallen soldiers” to “I need to help uncover the plot against the crown”. It’s kind of implied that Awu might have already told Xiao Qi about the truth before Song Huaien does, but the drama never makes that clear because we never see that scene if there was one. If Xiao Qi learns about the truth from Song Huaien first, does he then talk about to Awu? Again, we don’t know because it’s never shown to us. Instead, right after we see him learn about it from Huaien, it then immediately cuts to the confrontation scene with Awu. BUT, since this confrontation scene was revealed to be planned by them, it means that they’ve already discussed the Zitan problem in private beforehand, and Xiao Qi already knows that Awu knows, but we never see this conversation. It’s also revealed that they’ve long been suspicious of Huaien, but when did this suspicion start? Again, we don’t see this conversation. We just have to guess.

This is just one example of how these last 5 episodes made it VERY obvious where scenes were deleted. A lot of scenes were cut abruptly where one scene would suddenly cut to the next, and you kind of had to infer what happened between those scenes. Things still made sense and you could still follow along, but you could tell that they cut out scenes that would have helped flesh things out and make the transitions smoother.

Villains: Nearly every villain in the drama (Jin’er, Zitan, and Song Huaien) turned back into their “good” old selves again during their downfall. And because of this, it made the finale of the drama pretty underwhelming. Jin’er expressed how she misses the old days to Awu and calls Awu one of the most important people in her life, Zitan sees the light and promises to yield the throne to his nephew and face punishment for his actions, and Song Huaien uses his last dying breath to ask Xiao Qi to take him back to Ning Shuo and how he doesn’t want to be in the capital anymore (when he literally has an arrow to the heart while sitting on the throne he just stole). These characters take an abrupt 180 degree turn when they’ve been blind with envy and hatred for most of the drama. Just moments ago they were shooting daggers out of their eyes, and then suddenly they regret everything they’ve done. Their downfall felt too easy, and their redemption felt even easier and unearned. And Awu forgives all of them (as expected). When she pitied Zitan, I was like, girl, he doesn’t deserve your pity. I get that she needs him to sober up in order to discourage the rebels, but still. He had his own brother killed and tried to have her husband killed. Instead she consoles him like a lost puppy. I know that Awu’s a saintly character, and I’ve talked about the virtues of her character before, but sometimes I wish she’d be a little less saintly.

I think Daddy Wang’s final scene fit most well with his character. He’s defeated, but doesn’t entirely express regret for his actions. Which makes sense for his character. He’s never doubted his decisions all throughout the drama, so why would he start now. Even when Awu asks him if he ever loved her mother, he doesn’t answer her. Instead, he deflects the question back to her to ask if she loves Xiao Qi or Zitan, which is such a laughable question. How is Zitan even still considered a potential love interest for Awu at this point? In response, Awu tells him “此愛非彼愛”. Which I’m still trying to interpret?? To directly translate it, it would translate to “this love is not (comparable to?) love”. I’m having trouble interpreting 非彼. 非彼 means “not comparable to”. Is Awu saying that this love isn’t comparable to another love? Is she saying that this love isn’t considered love? Love for whom? Is she taking about her love for Xiao Qi and how it’s not considered “love”. Does she mean what she feels for him is more than love, or different from love? Or, does she mean her past love for Zitan isn’t love? Why is her response so vague? Her dad asks her if she loves Xiao Qi or Zitan, and she instead gives him such a dense, poetic response. Maybe my mandarin isn’t up to par to translate these historical dialogues, so I’ll be curious to see how the subs translate this line. Anyway, in the end, Awu asks her father if he would agree to being buried next to her mother, and after ignoring the question for a bit, he finally says that he wants to be buried next to her.

The treatment of women: The Elder Princess and Yu Xiu both sacrificed themselves in hopes of getting their loved ones to stop rebelling. And then Awu pulls the same move with her father in order to remind him what her mother had done in hopes of stopping him. And this was after we see Hu Yao and Nanny Xu needlessly die in the previous episodes. So all these female deaths and sacrifices made it feel like the female characters in the drama are disposable and can be easily killed off by the writers. It just didn’t really sit well with me that on 3 instances in this drama, a female character tries to use herself as leverage against a male character who’s about to commit treason. I’m also still not over Hu Yao’s death at the hands of Song Huaien, and we never get to see a proper burial for her because she’s a minor character, so the drama couldn’t be bothered to show it. The Dowager Empress also had a very anticlimactic end. She was such a major player pre-episode 50, and then suddenly she was bedridden and only heard about palace news from her maid and wasn’t able to exert much influence over the court. It was a little disappointing that we don’t get to see her wield any of her old power again after episode 50.

The “Could Have Been Better”

This might be unpopular opinion but, I think Awu and Xiao Qi kind of lost their spark in the last couple of episodes, or at least, it’s more subtle now. Probably because the plot was focused on bigger things, which I understand. These are the final episodes after all. They’re also a long-married couple now, they don’t need to constantly reaffirm their love to us. And the final scene was sweet, so I shouldn’t be complaining, but I wish we got more scenes of them alone together. I said this in a reply on another post, but their sexual tension peaked during the early episodes of the drama. It’s too bad we don’t see that level of chemistry again.

Something that I found funny was how we see Awu stand next to Zitan by the throne twice to protect him. The setup was almost exactly the same between the two scenes where Awu stands to his right. It was like the writers couldn’t figure out a new configuration for how to block the scene. The first time was during the “pretend confrontation” with Xiao Qi, and the second time was against Huaien. I just felt the the repeat setup of this scene was kind of boring and uncreative to watch. It was like the writers couldn’t come up with another way to stage a potential rebellion, so we’ll just have Zitan be cornered around on the throne twice.

Also, Huaien wanting to suddenly take the throne and also Awu as his Empress? First of all, I don’t understand why people, who don’t have the approval of the masses, always want to become Emperor. Do they not realize that by forcibly seizing power, you’re going to lose it just as quickly because no one likes you and they’ll try to take you down? I have the same criticism for Daddy Wang and Zitan. But does Huaien think that he has enough military power to become Emperor? And unlike Daddy Wang, Huaien doesn’t have any significant political impact over the lords. Also, does he think that Xiao Qi would just never come back? Second, him asking Awu to become his wife? We don’t really see him feeling tortured over his affection for Awu again since his wedding with Yu Xiu, and now suddenly, years later, it’s revealed that he still yearns for her? And he declares his love right after stabbing her dad? I mean, writers, please. I know you want to create drama, but it has to make sense.

To be honest, I’ve always found Huaien’s character arc a little hard to believe. He’s such a noble character for the first third of the drama, and then it’s revealed that he’s always secretly harboured a greedy side. A side that craves status and recognition. He then downward spirals into this monster who kills nannies and female comrades and wants to be emperor. We see small hints of his desire for the throne, like when he eyes Daddy Wang’s tailor-made royal robes. But this desire is not fleshed out enough. Huaien’s arc could have worked, but because the drama didn’t focus enough on his internal struggle at the beginning since he isn’t the main character, the change felt abrupt. I don’t know how the book handled it, so I can’t speak to that.

Things just escalate so quickly in this drama. I can now see AvenueX’s criticisms about the political plot of this drama and how it looks like it could have be written by a 10 year old. The writers seem to want to make things as surprising as possible, while also using a lot of old tropes that it becomes predictable. It’s very unrealistic. And the villains’ motivations and ambitions seem limitless. It felt like anyone could lay claim to the throne.

The political scheming in this drama has never impressed me, so I suppose that I shouldn’t be surprised that these last few episodes were just as lukewarm. The problem with the political plot of this drama is that there were no smart characters except Daddy Wang. It’s just a bunch of drama queens(TM) who want power, but do a poor job of thinking things through.

The highlight of the drama was the romance, which was a huge surprise since I didn’t start watching this drama for the romance. And yet, despite the romance being the highlight, the OTP is constantly being separated, and we barely got to see them together in the last few episodes. And the scenes that they did have together in these last few episodes weren’t memorable. If anything, their chemistry kind of fell apart during these episodes because we barely see them communicate directly with each other.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’d still recommend this drama just for the leads alone. You don’t see that kind of chemistry in idol dramas, and I don’t know when we’ll be able to see this level of acting between two well-matched actors in dramas again. Watching them is almost like a once-in-a-life-timeline thing. However, I think the average viewer might become frustrated with Awu halfway through. The drama’s also very bingeable (in fact it should be binged, instead of dragged on for almost 2 months). I think I would have enjoyed more if I watched all the episodes at once, instead of waiting for episodes as they came out every week, which meant that while waiting, I started to pick apart little issues that I had with the drama.

ONE. the two retail workers with a love / hate relationship. could be exes with a feud. if the mutant part of him is something you want , they could be competing for employee of the month but they both know third has an advantage with his power. can be the two employees who mysteriously disappear then reappear again looking only a bit messier than before.

TWO. ROOMMATE !!!!!!!!! idc where i write him , third cannot live on his own. not to mention he has terrible spending habits , and a bit of a diva but at least he can boil water. not cook anything in it but he can for sure boil it.

ONE. what if she started receiving warnings for not only herself but a specific person ? like someone she just happened to sync with. so now this random , tiny ass girl is literally stalking your muse and when they’re about to snap at her , she literally saves their life and tells them “ i’ve been trying to prevent that from happening all month. ” so now they don’t know whether to be happy she’s there or afraid for their life.

ONE. give me the clueless helper x hacker relationship. originally ning can message your muse anonymously and ask them to take so-and-so amount of money from an atm at a specific location and time. they don’t have to believe him but then he says they can keep majority of the profit. they do it with ease , leave ning’s cut at his spot and they continue to do such. coincidentally , your muse bumps into ning in person one day and they sorta bash heads. until ning hacks their phone and teases them about the atm hits. a stretch plot but i like it.

❪ 🌺 ❫ artie / cha eunwoo fc.

ONE. give me a plot where artie works under this prestige family company and is sorta cool with the son / daughter of whoever owns the place with a sibling who may potentially take over the company but no one wants them to. artie strikes a deal with them that they’d get their position if they help him out in the process , which is just a promotion he knows he deserves. however , they can lie and get the position and then have artie fired so they won’t deal with him anymore. honestly i’m just seeing so much angst from this.

ONE. an arranged marriage !! listen . . . as he is “ less reliable ” than liam , his dad believes the one true way to make him somewhat important is to marry him off. he is highly against this and will be an ass about the whole thing but can have a bit of a soft side ... not really but he can.

TWO. on the run pals !! finally he snaps and ends up accidentally killing his father and the first person he runs to is your muse. he gets caught being there and now they’re both being threatened to go to jail so he nabs them and they take off for the hills. if you want more angst , he could’ve developed a power in the midst of the accident so now your muse can help learn to use it.

❪ 🌺 ❫ zee / yoo jeongyeon fc.

ONE. someone who was in her life from the beginning before she got her memory wiped. they could try to help her discover who she is ( doesn’t need the power to come back if you don’t want the supernatural aspect ) and rekindle any lost connection they had. i picture that if she does remember , the ministry will be on her ass again so they’ll have to reside in the bunker she had before getting caught.

❪ 🌺 ❫ junghwa / son naeun fc.

ONE. i crave the plot where junghwa ends up trusting / falling for ( depends if romantic or platonic ) someone who is actually a mutant. the literal angst that will come from this. her finding out the truth , hiding them from the ministry , her having to choose between her uncle or the person she truly cares for.
