Exodus 23:2 “One man is dead. Another man’s life is at stake,” says the judge somberly in the classic 1957 film 12 Angry Men. The evidence against the young suspect appears overwhelming. But during deliberations, it’s the brokenness of the jury that’s exposed. One of the twelve—juror number 8—votes “not guilty.” A heated debate ensues, in which the lone juror is mocked as he points out discrepancies in the testimony. Emotions escalate, and the jury members’ own murderous and prejudicial tendencies come to light. One by one, the jurors switch their votes to not guilty. When God gave His instructions to the new nation of Israel, He insisted on honest courage. “When you give testimony in a lawsuit,” God said, “do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd” (Exodus 23:2). Interestingly, the court was neither to “show favoritism to a poor person” (v. 3) nor to “deny justice to your poor people” (v. 6). God, the righteous judge, desires our integrity in all our proceedings. In 12 Angry Men, the second juror to vote "not guilty" said of the first, “It’s not easy to stand alone against the ridicule of others.” Yet that’s what God requires. Juror number 8 saw the real evidence, as well as the humanity of the individual on trial. Listen to me, Satan, as I renounce all known and unknown spiritual agreements that I’ve made with your kingdom, in the name of Jesus. I renounce and reject all satanic contracts, all legal rights, and any demonic offers that I accepted from the kingdom of darkness, the devil, or the demons. I serve them an eviction notice today, in the name of Jesus. I renounce all lust, perversion, and immorality and every unclean, foul, wicked spirit out of my life today, in Jesus’ name. I renounce all witchcraft, sorcery, and divination; every occult practice, including tarot cards, Ouija boards, and horoscopes; or any occult involvement on any level, in Jesus’ name. I renounce all kinds of ungodly, immoral soul ties that bring shame to the name of Jesus. I command them to loose me now, in His mighty name. Right now I renounce all hatred, anger, resentment, revenge, retribution, unforgiveness, bitterness, and anger, in the name of Jesus. I renounce all demonic or satanic habits, temptations, and struggles that have in any way affected my spiritual life and relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. I renounce all ungodly covenants, oaths, and vows that I or anyone in my bloodline has made with the devil, whether on my mother’s or father’s side of the family. I curse them to the root. Let them shrivel up and die, in the name of Jesus. I renounce the devil, his kingdom, his practices, and any agreements that I have made with any demons, principalities, territorial spirits, and familial spirits, in Jesus’ name. In the name of Jesus, I renounce and revoke any words that I have spoken that have given the devil legal grounds over my life. In the name of Jesus, I renounce any evil covenants or oaths that I have made with the devil or any demon during my dreams. I renounce all false demonic prophecies that have been spoken over me in church, by divination inside or outside the church, or by any witch operating in the spirit of the world. I break those words off me now, in Jesus’ name. Let every demonic file the devil has had against me, from birth until this moment, be burned with the fire of the Holy Spirit. Today, I fully and completely renounce every struggle, stronghold, and bondage that has a name on it. (Call out the name of each one.) In Jesus’ name, all legal grounds are now destroyed. Let every yes that I have given the devil to access legal grounds against me be turned into a no in the fire of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name. By the fire of the Holy Spirit, I renounce every hidden work of darkness in my life (Eph. 5:11). In Jesus’ name, amen. In Jesus’ name, I destroy and renounce every demonic contract that is still active against me and my family, ministry, purpose, destiny, marriage, child(ren), and loved ones. Let it burn now in the fire of the Holy Spirit. I renounce and break off every yoke of bondage, every type of stronghold, and every satanic agreement that I’ve made with the devil. By the blood of Jesus, I destroy them. Holy Spirit, purify me and fill every void in my life with the blood of Jesus. Fully renew my mind, heart, spirit, and soul. I turn the page against the devil and give the pen back to You, Jesus Christ. Continue writing my story, Lord, so when my life is over, You can be proud that You picked me. Isaiah 62:5 Brendan and Katie beamed at each other. Looking at the pure joy on their faces, you would have never guessed the difficult ways so many of their wedding plans had been dramatically altered due to COVID-19 restrictions. Even with only twenty-five family members present, joy and peace radiated from the two as they said their vows because of their love for each other and expressed their gratefulness for God’s love sustaining them. The image of a bride and groom delighting over each other is the picture the prophet Isaiah painted to describe the type of delight and love God has for His people. In a beautifully poetic description of His promised deliverance, Isaiah reminded his readers that the salvation He offered them reflected the reality of living in a broken world—comfort for the brokenhearted, joy for those who mourn, and provision for the needs of His people (Isaiah 61:1–3). God offered help to His people because, just like a bride and groom celebrate their love for each other, “so will your God rejoice over you” (62:5). It's a remarkable truth that God delights in us and wants a relationship with us. Even when we struggle because of the effects of living in a broken world, we have a God who loves us, not begrudgingly, but with a rejoicing, lasting love that “endures forever” (Psalm 136:1). —LISA M.
