There's one take that has been floating around recently which is that c!Dream and c!Tommy are at the very least mutually obsessive (though I've also seen multiple people claim that c!Tommy is the only obsessive one of the two which sure is a take), so here's your reminder that c!Dream:

Used to hide in Tommy's walls and floor

Used to stalk Tommy, and has done it again after Tommy ran from Logstedshire and after he broke out of prison

Used to log off in Tommy's music room so he could log in if Tommy ever decided to play one of his discs

Followed Tommy around so much that Fundy joked about him being Tommy's stalker

Built tunnels connecting his and Tommy's base without Tommy's consent or knowledge

Tried to bribe Tommy and only Tommy into switching sides when L'Manburg just started (pre-independence war)

Addressed Tommy first and then continued connecting L'Manburg to him more than Wilbur (calling it 'L'Manchildbur' for example) despite Wilbur being the actual president

Chose to be the one killing Tommy instead of Wilbur in the FCR

Accepted the Discs as payment to give L'Manburg independence after he literally went to war and refused any possible peaceful solution before

Specifically gave a chest full of resources (which included Dream's prized crossbow) to Tommy and personally wrote a book for him during Pogtopia despite Tommy not being the leader nor the strongest fighter there

After switching sides he still allowed Tommy to go back to his home to get his stuff once he asked when they were alone

Spent most of his time pre-Pogtopia vs Manburg war with Tommy even after they knew they were enemies (and even after Tommy pointed out it was rather weird)

Gave a whole speech about how the only thing he cared about were Tommy's discs because they gave him control over Tommy in a believable enough way to make his best friend start losing his trust in him

Set Tommy up to get him exiled (framing him and later exaggerating his actions to get him punished for something that has never been punished before or after as it's commonplace on the smp) so they could spend time together alone and abused him into dependency during that time

He also sabotaged Tommy's communication with the outside during that time to further isolate him (intercepting his letter exchange with Ranboo and his party invites, as well as spreading misinformation about Tommy not wanting to see anyone)

Killed Mexican Dream for no other reason than the fact that MD was gonna move in near Tommy and offer him company that wasn't Dream

Tried to kill Ghostbur for the same reason

Gave a speech about his and Tommy's story would never be over because Tommy was "too fun"

Tried to kill Tubbo "to give Tommy an origin story"

Called Tommy the origin of attachment and the "key to everything" while announcing that he intended to kidnap him again and lock him away in the prison

Risked his final life when Tommy threatened to kill himself unless Dream went back and let Tommy kill him

When Tommy announced that he would stop visiting Dream in prison as it was not good for him, Dream resulted to begging to keep him there (he didn't show any interest in anyone else visiting at any point)

Organized an attack on the prison with Ranboo that had the objective of locking Tommy in there with him for at least a week (and demonstrated that he knew as much when he cited the prison contracts he wrote)

Always talked about "Tommy Tommy Tommy" while he was in prison according to Sam

Told Tommy they would be immortal together

Went after Tommy as soon as he got any basic gear once he was out of the prison, prioritizing that to getting back his armor and weapons, which everyone assumed would be his priority

Claimed Tommy was already immortal because he would keep reviving him over and over again

Dug a whole room under Tommy's home to leave an especially made torture mixtape there for him

As it has been pointed out already, in and out of universe, during the confrontation with Wilbur and Tommy in the prison he was staring at Tommy the whole time to assess his reactions despite Wilbur being the one who was threatening him

Admitted that he revived Wilbur only to torture Tommy

When trying to make himself look better in front of Sam he said that he set up the attachment vault as a little show for Tommy specifically

Meanwhile what people are using as proof of c!Tommy being obsessed with c!Dream is him saying that the server is about him and c!Tubbo against c!Dream (which is what it has factually been about so far for him for no choice of his own) and him thinking about c!Dream when someone triggers him by mentioning his canonical abuser.

There's kind of a difference there I'd say...

Yeah Phil slowed down the origin stream for the time being cause of the egg arc but the implication was he'd put effort in again when others did (looking at you tommy this is your server xDD ) So what the fuck is Dream trying to say here? Dream you've had a massive history of people trying to doxx and find you, how the fuck could you possibly know it was specifically to do with the QSMP/USMP situation?? What good has making this novel accomplished rather than going about creating the USMP and bringing those communities together in your own way was going to accomplish??

 “I understand. You heard the place you loved was in trouble, so you came back, but I don’t—I just—why didn’t you take me?” Here it was, at last. Catharsis, or something close to it. “I would have hunted them down with you, Philza, the people who did that to your town. I would have given you your vengeance on a silver platter. I would have given you the world.”

Philza didn’t look guilty. He just looked tired. “I didn’t hunt them down, though.”

This fic is a must read and an all-time classic in the Dream SMP fandom. It is not bold to say this is one of the best fanfiction that you will find on ao3. 

Shrike  ✅ 9/10  (blujamas, thcscus(bluejamas) ) -  Passerine pre-sequel, God AU, Royal AU, Dream Antagonist, Dream team, Georgenotfound Centric, SO MUCH PLOT

“You know, you might be the only thing alive that knows my name. I don’t know how long I’ve been sleeping, but it must have been long enough for people to have forgotten.” The stag finished the last of the berries and stared at George wonderingly. George chuckled, plucked another handful to offer to it, and continued, “I’d gone to sleep tired. And I wake up tired. Tell me, do you think that’s fair?”

The stag, because it was a stag, did not reply.

But George didn’t mind that, either.

Or, that fic about passerine!Dream Team, but before passerine.

This fic is good though in my opinion not as good as Passerine. The primary plot in the story is centred around more emotional than physical problems I would say. This can be read anytime, either before or after Passerine, but I recommend reading it after so things can make a bit more sense. 

The world forgetting by the world forgot🟡 8/10 (bonesandthebees) - SBI, Dream Antagonist, Hero/villain AU, Tommy Centric, Adoption AU , Bench Trio, Magic AU

“Something has been stolen from us,” Thanatos said, his wings puffing up as he spoke. “Something that is very important to us. And we are fairly certain that the person who stole this thing of ours is in this very crowd.”

Dream tensed beside Tommy as the crowd broke out into murmurs. Eyes were darting towards the different heroes in the crowd, the benefactors no doubt assuming that the culprit had to be a hero.

“Like we said, we haven’t crashed your party to cause trouble. But we want this thing returned to us, and we won’t hesitate to take extreme measures to get what we want.”

or, Tommy was a lot of things: a newly debuted hero sidekick, an amnesiac, and a former kidnapping victim of the Syndicate.

Tommy didn't actually remember that last one though. That was just what Dream told him.

Only weeks after his hero debut, the Syndicate announces they are searching for something, and Tommy knows it has to be him. The scariest part? If they find him, Tommy will have no clue what to expect, because the Syndicate might know him, but he has no memories of them.

So he can't let them find him. No matter what.

Of course they end up finding him anyway.

This fic has a great character development for Tommy in my opinion, from denial and all. This is one of the Hero/Villian AUs that is different from the other. 

🩵One Day I met a God ( Turns Out, He’s an Idiot )🟡 11/10 ( Sunshine_3)  - SBI, Tommy centric, God AU, Temporary Main Character Death, Minor plot, Adoption AU 

Every year, the Tournament of the Gods is held to determine who is worthy to gain the favour of the universe's deities.

This year, Tommy is determined to win, to be the youngest person ever to claim a victory.

Not because he wants to be blessed or anything. He just thinks it's funny.

This fic is one of my favourite, there is fluff and plot balanced out and is very fast paced if you just can't handle 50 chapters of build up like me. This is highly recommended

In which Tommy Soot, originally born in 1509, is cursed to be reborn, to never reach adulthood unless he figured out the Greek myth of his lifetime. He had one rule of not allowing himself to get attached to people but he would have never guessed that a foster family of the creator of Minecraft, an anime stan and a Soundcloud musician would break that rule.

“I mean… yeah, let’s go with that in case this ends up on the news,” Siren shrugged, looking back at Tommy. “I kidnapped you, right?”

“Yeah, sure,” Tommy agreed, knowing that if they said he was kidnapped, it would keep people from getting suspicious of why he was seen in public with Siren. “Anyway, can I get the chicken nuggets happy meal, with a coke?”

or, how Tommy—who is not a hero, or a villain, or even a vigilante—saves the life of one of L'Manberg's most feared supervillains, and accidentally ends up becoming the resident doctor for every supervillain in town (and maybe gets a family along the way too).

Tommyinnt’s unbeatable method of avoiding sudden death  🟡 8/10  ( eneliii)  - SBI, Dream Antagonist, Hero/villain/vigilante AU, Tommy Centric, Family Fluff, Adoption AU , Bench Trio, Hybrid AU, everything is a dream, tragedy, sad ending

“I uh,” Tommy starts, not knowing how to break this to the hero lightly. He hates to be the bearer of bad news. “I think your powers are broken? It’s not a bad thing of course, but like, I swear you tried to mind control me and it like, totally failed. Which is fine, honestly, don’t feel insecure. Everyone’s power stop working sometimes… I think.” 

Sheesh, this is very awkward. Why is no one else talking? Why is Philza looking at him like he grew three heads? Why is the Blade staring at him so intensely? Why is Willow still frozen?

“Did I, did I hit a nerve? Yikes,” Tommy hisses, “Well um,” He steps back, bracing his legs and bending his knees, “This was like super fun, but I’m - I’mma head out.”

So,” He fixes him with a long look, allowing the silence to hover like a dark cloud, the words rolling off of his tongue with all the venom and smugness he can muster, “—tell me, Philza. Where is your crew?”

OR: Technoblade is a naval captain, and Phil his unwilling prisoner. Somehow, they manage to come out of it as friends in the end.

🩵I was a kid in a village, doing alright, then I became a prince overnight 🟡 11/10 ( sircantus)  -  Family Fluff, SBI, Adoption AU, No plot, Royal AU, Tommy Centric, Minor plot, Bench Trio

In which Phil has created the Antarctic Empire from the ground up and takes in Techno and Wilbur along the way, and raises them while also ruling his kingdom. Tommy, sixteen, lives with Tubbo in an orphanage, the two of them running around in the cold streets of their town.

After a hectic day of getting separated from Tubbo, getting into a few fights, and ending up in an entirely new town, he comes across Phil, and saves him from an assassination attempt by smashing a plate over someone's head.

So then both Techno and Wilbur decide to see who this kid is, and Tommy sure is endearing, in the way that the first time they spy on him, he starts a fight in an alleyway over a bag of cookies.

(and then Tommy basically gets kidnapped into the royal family, but like, legally, y’know?)

"Wilby says that- that if a stranger ever tries to grab me, I can bite them." Tommy nods, giving a little glare towards Techno and his bitten hand.

SBI Zombie apocalypse AU, in which Tommy is a little kid who's been separated from Wilbur. While Wilbur is on a desperate search for his little brother with Phil, Tommy stumbles across Technoblade, who is the definition of 'no chill' in the zombie apocalypse.

"I promise" and he swears to himself he'll find a way to keep it.

Or Techno is a hero on a mission that quickly gets derailed when he meets Tommy, a boy who's spent his whole life locked in one room with only Dream, the biggest villain of the century, for company.

Wilbur rolls his eyes. “I’m just patching you up out of some misplaced sense of guilt or nostalgia or whatever; after this, you can try and arrest me again as much as you want-” “Nostalgia?” Tommy interrupts. He squints at the figure, all confusing tangents and cynical jokes, the bird still perched on his head. “What, do I know you or something?” Wilbur’s face darkens. He reaches out a hand, rubbing absently at a long slash going through his trench coat, a tear in the seams of it all. Tommy stills. “No,” the villain finally mutters with a brittle laugh. “No, you don’t.” …

Or: Superhero AU in which Wilbur, upon waking up in an alternate universe, accidentally becomes a villain. Maybe not a very good one, though - he remains insanely, outrageously protective over the very heroes (and vigilante) hunting him down.

“You won’t die.” Phil drawls, grinning and flying a bit closer. “I’ll catch you.”

“What if you don’t, though?!”

“Mate, even if I don’t, you’re just going to hit water, and you’ll be fine.”

“But then I’ll be wet.”

Dream’s hand rises to his throat, with a flick of his wrist, he drops his cloak to the ground. “Go, Tommy,” he says over his shoulder.

OR: Tommy is the lost prince of the Antarctic Empire and he would really like to *remain* lost since his family tried to sacrifice him to some creepy necromancy ritual when he was two. Dream has kept him safe for all his life, but he can't do that any more. Since he's you know. Dead.

Tommy used to be an average street kid: starved, hungry, and practically half dead. One day, however, he heard of a guild who practically took in street kids- fed them, clothed them, gave them a place to sleep- and the offer was too good to pass up. All he had to do was work at the guild!

Now, a couple years later, Tommy is one of the best assassins in the Essempi guild, but his mentor sends him on his hardest mission yet: "Kill the royal family of the Antarctic Empire on the night of their annual ball, October 31st." Tommy takes the missions as a challenge, but little does he know that this mission will be unlike any other he's completed before and will change his life forever.

His name was Tommy Innes, and he was born to touch the stars.

Of course, touching the stars was going to have to wait, because he'd lost that dream the moment his parents had died when he was ten years old—the moment he had watched that starship explosion and felt a bit of his heart die with them. He'd lost that dream when he was transported to prison and then to a place called Pogtopia.

He'd lost that dream when he watched hundreds of children starve on the streets of Pogtopia. When he and two friends become the lone survivors of the Red Planet's Genocide. When they were rescued, and he was captured again.

But maybe—maybe one day, he would regain that dream. Maybe he would hunt down the mass murderer that had executed his friends and gain his revenge—but that day was not now, and now he sat in a prison and stared at the faraway stars.

Perhaps there would be people that he could call family again. People he would see again—people whom he had lost years ago. One day.

Because he was an Avian, born to be forever alone amongst broken stars.

And Avians did not fall unless they wanted to.

Fucking kid won't tell us his name," Dream carried on like nothing had happened, and from beside Techno, Wilbur started wheezing like he was dying. "I think he's twelve or thirteen. Wind magic, he's quick and real snarky, very malnourished, blind-"

"Wait, blind?" Techno peered harder at the communicator. Wilbur stopped laughing. "How the hell is he able to slip by you then?"

"Uses the air currents like feelers, I think," Dream's breath was coming heavier as he carried on running. "Gets an idea of where things are in relation to him. He doesn't always get it right, sometimes there are cracks in things big enough to feel like an escape route and he slams into a wall. Or he doesn't angle close enough to the ground and trips on things. He's uh-" Dream flipped the communicator around, and Techno blinked as Bad flew through the air, screeching the whole way. "He's slippery."

Fame, fortune, fighting, it was every tiny child's dream, but only a select few were allowed to become heroes, especially not powerless ones.

And that was just Tommy's issue, he was powerless.

It seemed that everyone around him had some sort of quirk or superpower that made them stronger, that gave them incredible abilities like no other, but Tommy, arguably the kid who wanted to be a hero the most, was left untouched by luck.

Gold bands decorated his arms, dangling gems decorated his pointed ears, and a shimmering gold circlet rested on his forehead. 

  Past the beauty though, there was danger. His nails were pointed, his teeth too sharp. When Tommy tried to look him in the eyes, his head grew fuzzy, as if perceiving the fae directly wasn’t something he was supposed to attempt.   He was smiling as he looked over Tommy.   “Are you lost?” He asked in that same lyrical voice.or, Tommy gets adopted by the fae

You’ve seen me fight. Zyghost knows too.” He knows that Tommy can’t jump anymore, but that’s all of it. Maybe they’re thinking his electricity and power shocks is something tied to his teleportation, but they can’t know the true extent of Tommy’s “power” and he’s pretty sure that that is what’s keeping him alive.

“You want to poke me,” he hisses, although it doesn’t sound nearly as threatening as he wants, when he’s so goddamned tired and hurt and fucking aching. “You want to prod me. You want to figure out my powers. Either you think I’m your new bargaining chip or your new protégé you want to torture into submission,” he spits, hitting the nail on its fucking head when Sentinel freezes in his sights. “Well I’m fucking neither. I’m Theseus, illegal fucking vigilante and two of your hostages happened to be my family.

The aliens haven’t experimented on him. They’re scared of him and Tommy is glad for it. Almost all.

The Demon, green-silver-mercury; tall, muscled with golden horns is the only one that isn’t. He doesn’t flinch whenever Tommy screams at him through the glass, when he pounds his fist or charges the door with a ducked shoulder and a brace for bruises, but neither does he appreciate it for long. He, at least, is the only one so far to threaten Tommy. It had only been a raised hand—the glass between them protecting Tommy from the violence and protecting the alien from his retaliation—but it was a threat, nonetheless. Unacted upon, because in all the weeks Tommy has been in his possession, he hasn’t made a move to come into his enclosure cell and do anything against him.

But that’s just the point. It’s been, weeks? A month? Nearly two? Tommy knows that the aliens’ patience is going to eventually run out at some point and he’s not keen to find out what will happen next. He’s expecting violence. He’s expecting pain, he’s expecting blood, he’s expecting….

He’s not expecting this.

Okay so I did some research, and here's what I believe the breads of my mcyts are!

Tommy is fairly obvious, thanks to the distinctive markings, ears, and tail - he's a Raccooninnit, a very mischievous bread of Tommys! He's a little thief, and he likes to eat mud which isn't great, but that's normal for the breed from what I've found.

Eret, as I've previously said, is a long-haired breed as far as I'm aware! I wasn’t able to find much information on the breed, and most of it seems to be conflicting information, but she seems to be friendly with the other mcyts, which is good.

Fundy is a more fox like breed, which I believe is referred to as an anthropomorphic Fundy? More commonly called a furry, from what I've seen. I believe he is also fairly young, as older Fundys tend to be more bitter towards the world when they're placed in a neglectful situation like what probably happened to these guys.

Wilbur is a mixed breed, as I was informed when I got him from the shelter! He's a mix between the much friendlier pre-smp variety and the Pogtopian variety, which is illegal to breed in my area since they're so much more prone to vilification. He's mostly pre-smp, but I have to take him to the vet fairly often to make sure there aren't any underlying issues developing thanks to his Pogtopian heritage. So far he's been fine, though, and I think having new friends around might help keep it that way!

The last three, I haven’t been able to come to a full conclusion on, but here's what I have so far!

For Tubbo, the pink markings on his face typically indicate either a Manberg, New L’Manberg, or Snowchester breed, depending on his coat markings. However, his coat markings indicate a pre-L'Manberg breed, as Manberg and New L’Manberg breeds have more formal coats, often compared to suits, and Snowchester Tubbos have a much thicker coat to keep warm in cold climates. This leaves an obvious conclusion of him being a mixed breed. However, based on what I already know about these guys, I'm a bit worried that the markings may not be natural. Unfortunately I can't really come to any conclusions without having the vets do tests that Tubbo isn't ready for right now, so I can't be sure of anything.

I believe Niki is also a mixed breed, though I'm not sure which ones. Her hair reminds me of a Syndicate breed, but they tend to be more hostile towards Tommys and Tubbos, and my Niki isn't really like that, though I suppose it could be a result of whatever happened to them to make them group up. I can't figure out what other breeds she may be, though.

Jack is the most confusing to figure out, as I can't really find any information on the different breeds of Jacks. I can tell that he isn't a L’Manburg breed since he doesn't have the uniform, and he isn't a Snowchester breed since his coat is too thin, but that's all I can figure out at the moment. Given his attraction to fire, I might say he's an origins breed, but I'm not really sure if that breed even joins up with L’Manburgian groups, so I can't really tell.

12) How did you come up with this fic? Where were you/what were you doing when you thought of it?

Okay, so I came up with the idea for both AWS and Gone Away around the same time. The Disc War Finale was announced, we all thought c!Tommy was getting shoved in the prison, and everything else I explained a couple asks ago.

But for Gone Away, I originally wanted to try to predict what would happen during the Disc War Finale. Because I was still relatively new to DSMP (I started watching right after Nov. 16th, but I hadn't yet gone back to watch any pre-L'Manberg vods), I thought they were going to call back to the Bow Duel, where c!Tubbo would take c!Wilbur's place and call the steps before c!Tommy lost and died again. Tubbo would then rush back to the SMP with the news, only to find out later that Tommy had respawned in the prison.

To my relief, I was wrong. I was so, so wrong.

So after the Disc War Finale aired, I revamped my idea and reworked everything from the ground up. I became fascinated with the Trophy Hall/Hall of Attachments and how close c!clingy came to losing everything. As a Tubbling, I also became fixated on c!Tubbo as a catalyst, especially with c!Dream's whole "Every hero needs an origin story" line. To c!Dream, c!Tubbo is nothing more than the hero's (c!Tommy's) reason to keep fighting against the villain. He's the hero's connection to his past, and his death will serve as both trauma and an excuse for c!Tommy to never leave c!Dream's game--because if he isn't fighting against c!Dream, if he isn't keeping c!Dream occupied, then who's to say c!Dream won't just keep killing? Who's to say that c!Dream will just stop when he doesn't get what he wants, or that he won't hold c!Tommy responsible for all those deaths and frame him (because c!Tommy didn't try to stop him) and throw him in the prison so he can force c!Tommy to keep playing anyway? It's absolutely horrific to consider, but to c!Dream, c!Tubbo doesn't have any worth as a person--only how he can be used. And I wanted to build a story based on that concept, and then flip it on it's head.

I don't want to say too much more, but ultimately, Gone Away is a story about c!Tubbo finding his self-worth when it's been demolished, and in turn, he finds that agency and takes his life into his own hands. It's such a fun story about someone who has been beaten down into a passive protagonist healing and finding themselves again, and I can't wait to share the rest with you. The next few chapters are about to kick things off, and we'll have an absolute blast on the ride. :]

My first introduction to BadBoyHalo was a clip of him stealing Tommy’s stuff really early in the SMP. I can’t quite remember what Bad said while running off with his stuff, but it was essentially “finders’ keepers, i love stealing it’s mine now” or something along those lines.

I do remember finding it hilarious in the context of Tommy being blamed for being a sticky handed child and breaking Dream’s early rules. I think it was actually this clip that got me interested in pre-L’Manberg streams and the Original Eight members’ role in the storyline because like…. LOL. These fuckers are chaotic shits in their own right. It’s really unfair for Tommy to get blamed for “ruining the server”. He was just unlucky enough to have c!Dream’s attention.

I feel like I'm the only one who thinks this but to me, it felt like wilbur acted very passive-aggressive to ranboo and the beginning, like when ranboo started to get involved in their group (sbi and co) around january-ish.

It was played off as a joke but sometimes it felt a little too real. And about the start of the origins smp (so like mid feb) he became like almost excessively nice to ranboo which almost made me think he was trying to "make up" for how passive aggressive he was before. Like he started pronouncing his name the 'proper' way and going like "aww look its ranboo, we love ranboo here chat" and it was a little jarring to me.

(Also at the very beginning of the osmp he like questioned (chat or someone in vc, i can't remember tbh) if ranboo was an adult so that lines up with wilbur not knowing much about ranboo)

I’ll plead ignorance around the early era of them because I didn’t observe them much directly in the beginning, you probably know way more than me about what they were like at that time. I fully believe that Wilbur started out bitter and passive-aggressive, but the way his brain works is that he can see positive traits two ways: something to idealise, or something to be bitterly jealous of and try to devalue. The idea that maybe his opinion changed when he figured out how accommodating Ranboo can be makes me kinda ill, but somewhere along the way a switch definitely flipped.

Maybe pre age-reveal he thought of Ranboo as competition, which would explain some thinly veiled toxicity. Another quirked up white boy? I will end him. With Wilbur it’s rarely ever a total joke.  

The one thing I can add is that Wilbur is just an asshole. Like, he virtually owes Tommy his life and he still acts like a dick to him sometimes. When he acts up with Phil it gets narrativized as him being the chaotic middle child to Phil’s dadfriend energy, but it’s also kind of unpleasant. Part of his ‘sense of humor’ is exploding at people in rage, he’s got his absolutely mortifying story about when Techno announced he had cancer. Sometimes I can’t find a motivation for his need to torment the people around him beyond petty power grabs and mild sadism. I can’t explain it with much depth, so I don’t try, but it’s definitely in there.

Transcript Masterpost p. 1: Exile Arc

I originally planned to do exile arc through to c!Tommy’s revival all in one setting, but since I broke my elbow; that would be done very far into the future.

So, I decided to post the first part: Exile Arc.

In the beginning, I just wanted to transcribe the most relevant scenes with c!Tommy and c!Dream, and then later (first actual exile stream) I decided to transcribe entire VODs to be able to bring as many forgotten scenes and lines to light.

When my arm is healed, I’ll be going back and transcribing the entire pre-exile vods and updating this post as well, don’t you worry.

My hope is this will be able to help make it easier to include the proper quotes and timestamps in analysis posts, to minimise hearsay and spreading quotes people are unable to find the context of.

I’ll be linking to a Google docs for each vod as well as one big Google folder  that will eventually be updated to include transcripts from Bedrock Bros arc and onwards.

Production quality doesn't mean storyline quality. In fact, it might be detracting from it.

Yesterday, Tubbo and Ranboo talked about the shift from pure improv to pre-planned lore on the dsmp and how it's impacted content creation. This, combined with reading about how Karl feels he can't do casual smp stuff on his main - because it would be a dip in quality - got me thinking about the consequence of this progression on the story as a whole.

Karl is someone who puts loads of effort and time into building both the plot and setting of Tales From the SMP. I think it shows; Tales is an awesome sort of sub-series with a cool premise. But, and I mean this in the kindest way possible, a lot of his personal storyline lacks observable character development.

C!Karl is kind of a blank canvas because we don't get to see the moments between the big plot points. Those moments where Karl is chilling in Kinoko Kingdom and talking to Sapnap and you think oh, these people love each other, or there's an undercurrent of tension with the knowledge that Karl's forgetting what's right in front of him, or both. That's what's missing, and we don't know much about him or how he's feeling as a result.

Having a story restricted to its most significant beats - the driving plot points of the story - detract from the story as a whole. It's all payoff with no setup. The original festival would not have been as significant if not for the slow development of both the Manberg Cabinet and the internal affairs of Pogtopia. The exile arc would've been nothing if it had just cut to Tommy on top of the pillar right away. The Bedrock Bros' split was punctuated by all the moments of happiness and unity they had.

One of the most unique things about the dsmp's story is that it expands beyond what the viewers see. We exist with the knowledge that when a streamer signs off, their character is still going about their life. Ranboo is out there enderwalking, Foolish is making blueprints, Techno is hibernating and Phil is playing with trains in his basement. The world is vibrant because it feels like an actual world; it feels lived-in.

When you take away the "filler" parts of a story, it becomes empty. When every stream has to be significant, it feels like the characters only exist for those significant moments. That's fine, and if that's what the creators want I respect their decisions, but the notion that casual dynamics are somehow worth less than the movie-esque "lore streams" is ridiculous. We need the everyday occurances for the dramatic moments to actually be dramatic. We need the characters to be people - with wants and needs and relationships of whatever kind - for us to care about them. High-production is awesome, but it doesn't inherently mean anything.

Cards on the Table - Breaking down the tactics in L'manburg Independence

Much has been said in the fandom about L'manburg's independence. It is, after all, arguably the most important moment in DSMP's history, as the rest of the story wouldn't have existed without it. 

In light of the recent anniversary of it, yes I know I’m late, I wanted to throw my hat in the ring and add something to the discussion surrounding it. However, as the morality of the situation has been discussed to death I'll be taking a slightly different approach to it. 

Due to the nature of the DSMP's medium, the story has many unique quirks. One of those quirks is how realistic the tactics used in the story's portrayal of politics are. The independence conflict is a great example of it. While on the surface things seem to be rather simplistic in nature, there's a lot more going on that’s less obvious.

Both Wilbur and Dream are brilliant politicians who get to show both their strengths and weaknesses in dealing with an equally skilled opponent in this encounter. There’s actually quite a bit to go into, despite their interactions being so short.

When most people think about the L'manburg's independence, they think about the moment the declaration has been written up and the subsequent declaration of war. While this moment is certainly iconic, it's not really all that impactful in the grand scheme of things. Both declarations are the culmination of decisions that have been made beforehand. It's the moment when those decisions were made that really influenced things.

Conveniently, Wilbur and Dream only hold a single conversation about L'manburg before the declarations are drawn up, so we don’t need to look far in order to figure out where those decisions were formed. 

Wilbur has been working on L’manburg, collecting materials and building the wall surrounding it, for almost an hour when he spots Dream lurking. “Get [Dream] into the VC, I need to talk with him. He’s the leader of the other nation, I think we need to have a congress.” (52:44)

Dream: “Hello?”

Wilbur: “Hello Dream. Welcome to our great nation of L’manburg.”

Dream: “L’manburg?”

Wilbur: “Yes. We are seceding from Dream SMP. This is our own server now. This area, just this part [between the walls of L’manburg], is our server.”

Wilbur doesn’t waste any time before getting right down to business and talking about the matter at hand. However, the way he speaks about it here and in the rest of the conversation is fairly interesting. Wilbur is talking about L’manburg as if it’s something which already exists. They are seceding. This is their land. This conversation is merely a courtesy to give Dream a formal notice of their separation.

Yet, a bit later Wilbur shows he knows they need Dream’s acknowledgement in order for L’manburg to be its own entity. Independence is not a concrete thing that can just be taken or created on one person’s whim, after all. It only exists when the people with power agree it exists. 

Wilbur: “Dream, basically all we want from you is just acknowledgement that we are an independent nation now. That’s all we need.” (56:20)

So if Wilbur knows they aren’t independent yet, why is he talking like that? 

It’s because he’s using a salesman technique called an Assumptive Close. Instead of posing it as a question and putting the choice of agreeing or disagreeing in Dream’s hands, Wilbur acts as if it’s already true and leaves the burden of challenging his claims on Dream’s shoulders. He even moves on to ask secondary questions on how Dream feels about having embassies in his land (and notably he frames it as a question, unlike how he frames the topic of L’manburg’s independence) as if L’manburg is already a political entity. 

Wilbur: “Dream, I’ve got a proposition for you. How do you feel about having Tommy’s land being an embassy? Like it’s an enclave in your own land.” (59:01)

Wilbur’s use of this technique has an interesting side effect in that it signals to Dream Wilbur is taking a non-compromising position in this negotiation. In essence saying “L’manburg is independent, take it or leave it.” 

A non-compromising position is the game theory term for when someone goes, "I'm going to do that, this is going to happen and nothing can dissuade me from this course of action." It's a strong tactic which forces everyone to react to that person's position, reducing the others' options into a binary of either accepting that position or rejecting it. 

This is a very common tactic and various manifestations of it can be seen all over history and media. From Martin Luther who refused to recant or compromise with his famous words of “Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise” to groups who cultivate a "with us or against us" mentality to heroic characters who say they would die before giving in to whatever Evil the story focuses on.

This is the situation Dream is facing here. He can either accept Wilbur's assertion that L'manburg is an independent entity by either encouraging them or even doing nothing, or he can reject Wilbur's assertion by acting against it.

As we all know, he ended up choosing the second option but what were his considerations for doing so?

For that we would need to know what his goal was here, something we don't really get a sense of from his conversation with Wilbur. However, he ends up stating what it was in a later conversation with Skeppy. 

(Emphasis added by me and wasn’t part of the original dialogue.)

“Everyone can build wherever they want. [L’manburg] just decided to say that they get to determine where they can build and we can’t and we said well no, you can’t do that. And that’s what the whole war was over.” (31:44)

“[L’manburg] can’t tell us that we can’t go in their land. That’s all we wanted to say. That they’re not independent, they are a part of the Dream Team SMP. They’re just a delusional, small part." (34:26)

Dream lies a lot, so just because he says something doesn't mean it's necessarily true. However, this seems to be genuine. Dream has no problem telling Skeppy “we burned down their houses and blew up the whole land.” (32:36) later on in the conversation, so we can rule out that he's trying to paint himself in a better light, and there aren't really any other reasons for him to lie to Skeppy here about this. 

When looking at Dream's options with his goal we can see the choice is pretty much a no-brainer. 

Accepting is a total lose scenario for him. Not only will it fail to fulfill his goals, it would actively encourage the sort of behavior he doesn't want to happen, as Wilbur would set a precedent that so long as someone insisted hard enough and implied Dream is a bad person he would fold in negotiations and give them what they want.

Rejecting gets him far closer to his goal of railing against L’manburg’s exclusion. Going to war means he has to invest much more effort and resources into his reaction than if he just accepted as well as deal with the risks any war has, however the sheer difference in ability between Dream's side and Wilbur's side make the risk minimal. 

Going to a war he’s pretty sure he can win VS encouraging the sort of thing he disapproves of, isn’t really a hard choice.

This is actually the result of a mistake on Wilbur's part. CC!Wilbur called his character naive (37:49) and he's not wrong. Wilbur has a tendency to act as he wishes and not take into account that people might disagree or retaliate. We see it with him saying they could just ignore the Americans (1:51:17) or during the elections when he told Quackity his scheme and got blindsided by Quackity deciding to run against him. 

Historically, non-compromising positions worked best when the person who used it made sure rejection would be more costly than acceptance in one way or the other. In essence, narrowing down the options for others even more and leaving them only with acceptance. 

Wilbur may have managed to wipe off the table all other options and put pressure on Dream to accept with his use of Assumptive Close, but he didn't do anything to prevent Dream from rejecting. In fact, it seems like Wilbur didn't even consider it as a valid possibility as he outright dismissed it when Dream brought it up as an option.

Dream: “What happens if the rest of the server decides to take over your land?”

Wilbur: “They can’t. It’s literally not how servers- Dream you’re supposed to be smart man, that’s not how servers work. You can’t just take over another person’s server.” (54:33)

But, you may be asking, if it was better for Dream to go to war against L'manburg rather than grant them independence, why did he end up giving into their desire for independence in the war? Wouldn't it have been better if he just saved everyone the trouble and gave it to them when they asked for it the first time? Or maybe Dream’s obsession with Tommy and his discs is just that strong?

We can find the answer to all those questions at Punz’ video where he shows the behind the scenes of the independence war, including some of the planning which went into it from the Dream Team’s side of the war. Specifically, this quote:

Dream: “[The L’manburgians] are never gonna give up. So then in the end the resolution will probably just be, we won but they can think whatever they want, we’re just going to ignore them because they’re essentially like- You want to think you’re independent? You’re not, you’re still part of the SMP, but if you want to think you’re independent, you can.” (9:04)

“They’re never gonna give up.”

Whether it’s true or not doesn’t matter, as this is what Dream thinks and so this is what dictates his actions. Perhaps he’s overestimating his opponents here, or maybe he’s talking about how even if L’manburg is defeated this time they would try again for independence in the future. In either case, it’s clear Dream thinks the best case scenario for him - completely preventing people from fighting for L'manburg's independence - is impossible. 

So, he tries for the second best case. If he can’t prevent L’manburg, he’s going to allow it but only under Dream’s terms. That’s what his “they can think whatever they want” line is all about. He intends on giving them token independence here, something which would satisfy them but wouldn't pose a real threat. Which is exactly what he ends up offering them during the bow duel.

Dream: “Let me just clarify: if you win, we grant L’Manburg independence.”

Tommy: “Alright.”

Dream: “But we recognize it still as a part of the Dream Team SMP.”

Wilbur: “That’s fine, that’s a fine condition.” (40:54)

The token independence thing didn’t work out so well for him. L'manburg quickly grew to be seen as an entity separate from Greater Dream SMP by everyone, and so Dream was forced to concede and treat it as one as well. 

However, despite this part of his plan failing, overall the independence war was a glowing success for Dream. 

By giving L'manburg independence after winning the war, Dream sent a very clear message. L'manburg only gets to be independent so long as they stay on Dream's good side. If they don't adhere to the terms Dream sets out for them? He can and will kick their asses, as the war so aptly demonstrated.

This message is received loud and clear. During his entire presidency Wilbur went out of his way to treat Dream with respect and try not to piss him off. Something he clearly demonstrates a number of times, like when he asked if he should call Dream “king Dream” (59:08) or during the railway skirmish (24:16).

In fact, it can be argued that this message lasted all the way up to Tubbo's presidency. Unlike Quackity, who was perfectly fine with starting a fight with Dream, Tubbo knew first hand what a war against Dream looks like. He knew that they could not win a war against him, especially in their weakened state at the time, and that influenced his decision. 

As Dream once said: "L'manburg can be independent but it can't be free."

Tailor!Reader in Dream SMP

Dsmp x reader prompt; Tailor!Reader in Dream SMP. Credit would be appreciated so more people can find this and make their own things based on it.

Can fully be read as platonic. GN!reader with they/them pronounce as a placeholder so anyone can adapt it however they want. Both general and character specific parts included.

Characters who have a lot written for/about; Eret, Ranboo, Foolish, Tommy, Technoblade, Philza and Michael. Mentioned; Tubbo, Sam Nook, Purpled and Foolish Jr.

This ended up being super long so I’m putting it under the cut in order not to clutter people’s pages. My personal favourite part is Phil’s and Techno’s part. These could be read as headcanons but are still available as a prompt(s) to use for anyone.

The reader joining after the doomsday as a time frame in my mind.

The reader helping people patch up their current clothes since most of it got pretty banged up during the doomsday, and it's not like they can just go get a new outfit since quite a few people had just lost all their belongings and only had the clothes on their back. So at first prioritizing helping patch up the current clothing people were wearing and then moving on to making some simple fast to make and easy on the resources clothes for people. Just like basic shirts and shorts/pants, nothing fancy. Then when everyone has at least a couple of different clothes to change to and from starting their own business to sell people more if they wanted. However waving payment if they brought them the materials and what they wanted wasn't overly complicated.

People at first thinking they are just some chump who knows basic sewing or something. A very kind chump, but still a chump. So imagine their surprise when one day they are just walking by the reader's now established tailors and they see these absolutely stunning designs displayed at the windows. 

Just like their reactions seeing these beautiful designs they can't help but stare at. I'd imagine some of them just doing a double take when they walk by, someone pressing their face up to the glass trying to see it closer, the braver ones going inside and talking to the reader about their designs and the more anxious and/or shy ones only going inside when the reader isn't there to look at designs closer. 

And the reasons they like/are amazed by the designs vary also ! Some just have monkey brain that goes "Pretty. WANT", some who just love the colour and art of the pieces, some who imagine how epic this design or others would look on them, some who love the fashion aspect of it and of course the very small portion who actually know anything about tailoring/sewing and the amount of work that goes into making something intricate.

Some specific character/group interactions I thought of;

Making warm well insulated clothes for people moving to Snowchester so they don't freeze. +A warm cape for Ranboo for the same reason.

Eret being one of the firsts (if not the first) to get himself a fully tailored and customized outfit. Them also being the first and very possibly only person to get a dress or a skirt since most of the other people on the server prefer to wear pants (excluding maid dresses which people might get as joke). The reader crying in joy for getting to design something different for once. And hey if the reader ends up making a few extra ones that she didn't order, but decided to give her anyway it was all just some extra ones they had lying around, never mind the fact that the dresses/skirts are perfectly tailored for Eret and are her style. Just a coincidence, nothing suspicious there. Eret also models for the reader and once he even convinced them to hold a fashion show to showcase some of their work to the whole server. Of course he was the main model presenting the outfits.

At start of the reader beginning to display their designs at their shop Ranboo sees a really cool looking suit on display and his brain just goes "Want." He probably wouldn't be able to buy anything pre-made and be comfortable in it due to his physique. And him having just moved into the arctic and only starting to get settled in, he doesn't have comfortable enough funds for him to get something as expensive as a custom tailored suit AND have enough for any possible rent that he might be required to pay. 

Eventually when he gets richer he starts considering getting one but the anxious side of him always ends up winning and he doesn't. However once he finally gets the courage to go commission the suit for himself he doesn't regret it at all. The reader did their best to not overwhelm him and to make it the best possible experience. Just imagining the absolute joy he would feel for having a properly fitting suit that's made just for him, not too short sleeves nor too wide torso and shoulders, just perfect. If he ends up ordering a couple more suits that's between him and the reader. He actually ends up probably being their most frequent and reliable customer.

And we should all know why that is, but let me clarify just in case; Michael.

The reader basically becoming Michael's personal stylist (/hj) . Not only does Ranboo buy a god awful amount of clothes for Michael, the reader also makes some free ones for him. The free ones are things the reader felt like designing since they absolutely adore Michael and the ones Ranboo pays for are commissioned by him. Michael absolutely has the biggest wardrobe in the whole server. The reader learning how to make plushies so Michael could have some more toys, this learning experience including learning to crochet and knit to see what he like best.

Using their newly acquired plush making skills, the reader starts their quest to make some plushies for others after seeing people stare at the plushies wistfully either while they were working on them or seeing Michael with the plushies. People who got them include the minors, their close friends and basically anyone they thought might benefit from them. Some of the ones they made (that I could think of);

Of course a bee for Tubbo, but also throwing in a little ram one as well

Ranboo gets a grass block plush/pillow

Tommy gets a cobblestone block plush and a cow plush. He also later receives a Sam Nook plush while he's working on the hotel

Purpled getting two different sized ufos, one to hold and the other more of a big pillow

Eret definitely gets a flamingo plush

Foolish gets a totem and a gold block plushies

Phil gets crow plush as well these tiny fake coin and gem plushies (the latter causes problems for him which I'll expand upon later)

Techno gets a pig one as well as polar bear one

Back to the individual/group part

The reader just chilling w/ Foolish as a fellow artists. Them talking about both their arts and catching up every time the reader comes to deliver something to Snowchester when Foolish is building the mansion. Just two pretty peaceful artists talking about their passions. I’d imagine Foolish and the reader could relate to each other and their place in the server due to their similar hobbies/jobs as well as their similar time of joining the server. Foolish's first commission from them being an intricate blanket for Foolish Jr so he could have a more comfortable resting place. He may or may not end up receiving that and several other (though less intricate) blankets as well as a tiny shark plush to give to Foolish Jr. Later on when the reader gets better at either knitting or crocheting they end up making a tiny shark jumper with a hood for Foolish Jr as well. Foolish would definitely cry when he sees his tiny shark baby. Any commissions of clothes for himself tend to always take some time due to sheer amount of work needing to be done due to his size so he always makes sure the reader doesn’t already have a lot on their plate and that they know he’s fine with waiting if they need to take a break from it.

Then there's Tommy, who they sometimes teach more about sewing since he already knows some basics. Him probably being the first person aside from Michael they make a plush for, due to him demanding one once he saw the reader making them. Then proceeding to get three plushies in rapid succession. The first being the cobblestone, the second being the cow and the third one being the Sam Nook one. He ends up losing one of them during the prison fiasco and when the reader asks if he'd like a new one they only get the answer of "Don't want to think about what happened and the same one might make me do that". He then promptly receives new clothing (so he isn't wearing the same ones he was wearing in prison) and some extra blankets (for comfort) from the reader. 

After Tommy meeting Michael does he use him to scam the reader to make them matching outfits for free? Yes, yes he does. Does it work? Yes, yes it does. Are they bothered by it? Not really, they look adorable in their matching outfits.

The reader being the source for Sam Nook's construction gear/clothes or at least the original patterns for them.

And then there's the arctic boys (minus Ranboo, who will still get mentioned) who are an interesting bunch clothing wise. The first one to commission the reader out of them would be Phil who got the original warm cape for Ranboo but also at the same time commissioned one for himself that would include slits for his wings. Eventually getting to design clothing for him which is always an exciting challenge with his wings. And when Phil finally manages to convince Techno to get something made for himself as well, Techno almost immediately gets addicted to having high quality clothing when they finish their first piece for him. The fun the reader has designing clothes for these boys is immeasurable with their different styles and needs in the clothing. Aside from clothing Techno also commissions them for a pet bed for Steve. 

When the boys got their plushies it was adorable but also a very chaotic. Techno giving his pig one to Steve so he wouldn't miss him when he was away from home, but also bringing the polar bear one with him when he couldn't or wasn't allowed to bring Steve with him but still needed comfort. While on Phil's side of things; he was showing his crows the crow plushie joking about he'll replace them if they aren't careful however he made the mistake of showing them the tiny coin and gem plushies as well. I want you to imagine hundreds of crows descending upon this poor fool of a man in the background while the reader is walking away hoping they like their plushies. 

The war that ensued the couple following days amongst the crows starts to cool down but the bickering doesn't, every waking moment Phil can feel eyes on him and one or more of the crows coming to complain about the others having had the shiny plushies for too long. He quickly caves under the pressure and commissions more of the tiny shiny treasure plushies. And by more I mean a lot more. 

When he finally has enough of the things he goes around distributing them to the crows. Finally a moment of peace, but he still feels like something is staring at him occasionally. Deciding to ignore it since it's finally quiet he goes to makes himself a cup of tea and while waiting for the water to boil he fishes out the few shiny plushies he had saved for himself. The second he does he feels eyes burning into him and now that it's quiet he hears it, quiet muffled snuffles and snorts of discontent. Then he sees what ‘it’ is, it's Techno behind the window looking at the shinies in his hand with such intensity Phil fears for his life (/hj). Phil just sighs deeply before walking over to the window and opening it. For a second Techno looks like a deer in headlights before returning to intensely staring at the shinies in Phil's hand before Phil just dumps the shiny plushies into Techno's hand and closes the window. Happy piglin noises can be heard outside while Phil debates the pros (getting to have shinies himself) and cons (the embarrassment of having to commission even more of the shiny plushies than he already has) of getting new ones from the reader. And in all this the reader has no idea the amount of chaos they inadvertently caused.

And finally; Techno commissioning robes/cloaks for whole the Syndicate to wear in their meetings, because he’s dramatic like that. But since he’s a thoughtful guy, he wants them all to fit the members well and not be uncomfortable to wear so he gets everyone’s measurements. Once he has them all he goes to the reader with the order for the robes, he has all the measurements written down under just Person 1, Person 2 etc. to keep their anonymity and when asked what the robes are for he just tells the reader it’s a book club. When he gets them all and the reader asks no further questions he thinks he’s gotten away with getting some cool robes for the Syndicate with their secrets safe. Little does he know the reader actually now knows all the members in the Syndicate since they can just reference the gotten measurements with everyone’s measurements written down from previous work done by them. Whether the reader thinks it’s some weird cult they all are a part of or just an actual book club people are too embarrassed to admit they are in, is up to interpretation.

Tommy Danger Careful Kraken Innit according to himself. Tom “Tommyinnit” Simons is also an option, tho little to no evidence supports this as canon.

Techno Blade. Was confirmed as canon during his Visiting Dream stream. Some characters have also referred to him as Mr. Blade before.

Philza Watson Minecraft.

Wilbur Soot. Pre-SMP he was Wilbur Minecraft. Soot is Sally's last name

Sally Soot.

Fundy Soot, although he signs Fun Jonatahan Micahel (yes, he wrote it like that) Vincent Georgina James Sus Dy, there’s little to no indication supporting this as canon. Still, it can’t be completely discarded.

Tuberculosis “Tubbo” Underscore according to himself. It is unknown if Tubbo altered his name to Tuberculosis “Tubbo” Underscore Beloved after his marriage.

Ranboo Underscore Beloved. Previously Ranboo My Beloved.
