The Red Star is terrifying as a concept not only because the kestora'a ability to repair most of their 'patients' has degraded to almost nothing.
It is also a threat. Not even death can save you from being forced to work - or from other kinds of suffering. It's so terrifying because this fear is so relatable in current times with powerful companies and CEOs exploiting their workers as much as possible.
Imagine the horrible certainty that you died, only to arrive back where you worked before and are expected to go to work again.
If you're unlucky, your death was painful and terrifying and you remember all of it. Or even if your conscious mind doesn't remember, your brain and body does. But you have no context for this dread.
Worse- if you remember the kestora restoring you back to life.
And then the Red Star's return teleport broke. Every being inside is now trapped, forever.
You cannot rest. You cannot rest. You're not allowed to rest because you were meant to work work work work- You can only hope that your spirit, soul, mind is out of reach of the Red Star as it red glare calls your body into his halls and under the hands of the kestora.

I absolutely adore your style and how you tend to draw DC's lesser known catalogue.
would it be prudent to ask you for a drawing for Pantha and Red Star from the 90s new titans run?
I do oh so love having them acknowledged. thank you for the amazing art even if you end up not answering this req
Thank you so much! It wouldn't be prudent at all!

Fixing (maybe) the Red Star
As a concept, this broken afterlife slaps — but it also derailed my brain and a good chunk of lore. I think it was a problem for Greg Farshty, too, since he immediately had to go back and specify why the Machine That Resurrects Everything couldn't exactly resurrect everything. (RIP Toa Mangai)
There's a lot going on with the Red Star. I think the easiest fix is to narrow the its field. Why back up millions of brains when most matoran, etc. were meant to be drones? Instead, make the Red Star a failsafe for key systems figures. Leaders. Guardians. People like Artakha, a few Order of Mata Nui members, the Toa Mata, the Great Spirit himself. Oh, and Karzahni. The Barraki. The makuta.
A few narrative implications and plot bunnies:
• Imagine accomplishing the impossible and killing a makuta, only for him to appear in a new body a few months later and tell you no matter how many times you end him, he'll always come back. He can never not come back.
• Immortality messes beings up. Die, return, die, return. After a few times, every other being feels less real than you are. Expendable.
• @herora-nuva (hi! love your work!) theorized on his YouTube channel that The Pit exists to keep the worst of the worst from being reincarnated, and that idea still tracks here. Bonus points if knowledge of the Red Star fed the Barraki's god complexes.
• Makuta Teridax can't kill specific people in his way, and that's enough motivation for him to break the afterlife. Or, if this Red Star decays on its own as the original did, the game changes drastically one day. The beings keeping him in check aren't dead, but they also aren't here, and things in the GSR are about to get messy.
• Maybe another being breaks the Red Star to keep the immortals dead. It doesn't go quite as intended.
• To modern matoran eyes, resurrected beings are...strange. The populace of the GSR has upgraded and evolved over the millennia, but the Red Star only has the original designs. Resurrected bodies can be modernized, but there's still something off about them.
• The Red Star's purpose fades from memory, but clues drift throughout the myths.

There is a version of this scene where Red Star beats the holy Russian hell out of Superboy Prime in Wildebeest and Pantha's names. And it would be glorious. They didn't GIVE US that scene, because their cowards but I can dream can't I?

Ok, so.
What the hell is up with the Red Star Arc that got canceled.
I know it was supposed to basically be "bionicle zombies"
but like, Were they gonna go Night of the Living Dead, Evil Dead, or go full DOOM with Kopaka & Pohatu going full on rip & tear???
Do we even know???

Another story aspect the writers liely wouldn't have covered with the reveal of the Red Star and its functions, but which would've had massive repercussions. Not only for the former Great Spirit Robot inhabitants but for many if not most or people on Spherus Magna:
Reviving dead GSR inhabitants (and imperfectly, at that).
That's (another piece of) world-changing information. Information some will not believe or misinterpret. Even more so if the spread of information is uneven, and gossip, rumors, and misinformation makes the truth unclear(er).
Depending on the story you want to tell and the Red Star's part in the story:
You have to consider the spiritual and philosophical consequences of upsetting different beliefs. What do life and death mean if you ccan manipulate them so?
People's grieving processes will be thrown into disarray.
Practical concerns rise about what to do with that information. An example: some GSR inhabitants start to destroy the bodies of their dead - like with burning into ashes - to save them from being resurrected.
A different reaction: Some will seek out the Red Star, hoping to find their loved ones, hoping to have them return to them.
Another reaction: Some will try to reverse-engineer the technology or adapt the Red Star. True resurrection (or so they believe, depending on the story). Some will try to reverse-engineer the technology to work native Spherus Magnans. Which hasn't even included why any of these people want to resurrect people or how, if it does work, it'll affect them.
To repeat: This would be world-changing in-universe. Actions, reactions, and consequences would spiral out of control.

So canonically, Jaller died & was resurrected by Takutanuva. Also, depending on whether you take the Mask of Light movie or the Story Bible as canon, Takanuva *also* died & was resurrected from his mask.
The Red Star space station *also* resurrects people in the Matoran Universe. (Their teleport broke & they couldn't send them back; the respawned folks are all stuck up there.)
So, what if the Red Star *also* resurrected Jaller & Takanuva? And there are two of each of them?
Who would win a Kolhii match??
I'm inclined to think that canonically there aren't two Jallers since Greg hinted before the Red Star reveal that the upcoming story would explain Jaller's resurrection. So either Jaller was resurrected on the star and Takutanuva teleported him back, or Jaller's body hadn't been reanimated yet and Takutanuva both teleported it and resurrected it (the wiki seems to imply the latter since it discusses Takutanuva's life force being used.)
However I know that's not the fun answer, so.... well. Let's say there are two of each. The Jaller on the Red Star is presumably still a Matoran, while the main one is a Toa. And the Takanuva on the Star got squashed by a door and resurrected by people with limited resources, so he's probably not in great shape. Not a very long game of Kolhii is what I'm saying.

The fact that they think Red Star would trust the Russian government. Especially the mid 2000s post-Putin Russian government shows Geoff Johns didn't know a thing about his character. But we knew that.
