i strongly believe that in any universe modern or otherwise lwj uses lan xichen as a kind of confessional like a catholic priest. he literally comes into lan xichen's room at four pm precisely because that's the scheduled time that he allows himself to share an Emotion with his brother and sits down and says in a distinctly monotone yet perfectly recognisably anguished tone 'brother i have sinned' and lan xichen sighs very quietly because he doesn't want to hurt his brother's feelings and puts down his pen and says 'is this about wei wuxian' very gently and Lan Wangji is like 'mn' because it has never once Not been about wei wuxian. and then he says something that is Kind Of Weird, But Still Not A Sin like 'he fell asleep when we were studying and i watched his ribcage moving up and down for thirty eight minutes until he choked on nothing and woke himself up; am i evil' and once again lan xichen will kind of not-sigh in a way that makes it very obvious that in all other ways except physical he Is, Indeed, Sighing and has to reassure the most rigidly distraught younger brother in the history of mankind that what he is suffering from is in fact a malady known colloquially as a crush

Gotta be honest, the idea that Luke wouldn’t send a child alone in an X-wing with only a droid for company is funny to me.
Like, we’re talking about the same Luke, right? The one who spent years bulls-eyeing womp rats and took the experience from that to then blow up the Death Star? The one who was like “This is a trap… I’m gonna walk right into it.” The one who was like “I will rescue my dear friend by waltzing in without a disguise and being as obnoxious as possible.” “How do we get out of this situation? How about we convince these small bear creatures that our droid is a god, that will probably work.” “I know Darth Vader is a murderer who murdered my Ben and is trying to murder me and all, but he is also my dad and therefore I love him.”
Luke would send a child in an X-wing without even fucking thinking about it! Do you REALLY think LUKE SKYWALKER is a reasonable human being?? Are you honestly trying to tell me that this man who has been driving the same fucking ship for like ten years would understand how dangerous it is to put an unsupervised child in a vehicle??? Do you really honestly truly think that Luke knows how to care for children????
You see, a lot of people like to portray Luke as perfect. And this is the same issue I have with people who portray Obi-Wan as perfect, or Yoda, or Mace, or literally any character in all of Star Wars because the whole point is that the are flawed human beings!
But it’s ESPECIALLY egregrious with Luke because I don’t know where any of you got this idea that Luke is a sweet summer child??? This man has a death count of over one million. This man had Seen Some Shit that it is literally impossible not to be affected by. Why do so many people assume that Luke at the end of the Trilogy is the same as Luke at the beginning of the Trilogy? He’s changed! He’s a different person! That’s what makes the Original Trilogy such a good trilogy!! It’s basic storytelling!!! A character canNOT be at the same place mentally as when they began the story, or else it’s not a good story!
But also, I hate the way this colours shipping fics with Luke. Like, listen. There is no ship where Luke should be the straightman of the relationship. Luke Skywalker just is not normal. He’s weird, he’s deranged, he’s so strange; he cannot be a straightman, it just doesn’t work. It’s so completely out of character it isn’t even funny.
The joy of shipping Luke is that every single thing that you can ship Luke with will come out the other sode looking rational.
Han Solo is a smuggler who hangs out with a Wookiee and who does extremely dangerous, stupid shit, but next to Luke?? Rational. Normal. Someone who uses their brain, Luke, take notes-
Din Djarin is a bounty hunter who decided that he would rather destroy an entire group of highly dangerous men than give up the cute kid he just found. But compared to Luke? At least he has equipment on him!
Mara Jade literally was mind-controlled by the Emperor and was Darth Vader’s coworker and was also a Jedi (something that no rational person would be honestly) and even she comes across as normal compared to Luke Skywalker.
I know this is rambly and disjointed and I know people disagree with me, but like??? Yes, I think Luke is great with kids. Yes, I think Luke is a good teacher. Yes, I think Luke is the type of person to wave goodbye as an infant flies off in his warship. I think Luke is the type of person who would throw a child into the air way too high and then catch them. Where did the idea that he’s the responsible parent come from? Luke is teaching infants how to use laser swords, do you REALLY THINK that’s what a responsible parent would do????

The thing about the Dunwich Horror is that it's actually scarier if you read it from the Whateleys' perspective because like. You have this teenager who's been ostracized from his community and is constantly stalked and harassed by his neighbors, needing to care for his giant spaghetti monster brother on his own while keeping it a secret from the rest of the town and then he tries to get the magic book that he needs from the library and the bitchass college professor bans him not just from that library but from every other library in the country and then proceeds to stalk him for information on his eldritch horror parents. Then in desperation he breaks into the college library to steal the book and gets brutally killed by the guard dog and the college professors get access to all of his personal artifacts. Meanwhile the afforementioned spaghetti monster breaks out of the house and starts lashing out attacking the townspeople because he's hungry and probably scared, so the college professors go out to hunt him down and kill him, and he gets zapped out of existence while begging for his eldritch god father to save him. And like the twins are fifteen years old at that point. Idk the story just really changes with the context that the Whateleys are children who get violently killed and then dehumanized by everyone else

there was an 8 minute standing ovation after champagne problems last night and the energy in the stadium was unbelievable
70 thousand plus people pouring out their hearts and losing their minds and at the center of it was was taylor who deserved to relish every second of it
it’s because of her art and her dedication that we all got to share that moment in that stadium and i don’t think i’ve ever experienced anything like it or will experience anything like it again

Whenever we mention anything about the Bandits in our particular flavor of worldbuilding it is absolutely necessary to note that our particular variation of Astotheles's Second-In-Command is an elderly damselfly missing the majority of her flesh limbs who limps around with a cane on the majority of days and won't let you take a job of any variety without basic self-defense knowledge.
She is the rock upon which half of the bandits' capacity for organization is founded and no one outside of the bandits knows who she is because she's an seventy-eighty-year-old grandmother with negative public presence in the direct shadow of someone charismatic enough to spearhead an attempt at starting an entire new kingdom on the land of the single queen with the current best public relations.

Many people experience feelings of being powerful so infrequently that they try to hold on to them. By doing nothing they hope to preserve their magic moments. But we can really hold on to power in our lives only by constantly discharging it. By releasing creative power we open ourselves up to receive a further flow. However, by trying to hold onto it, we block the channels and the sense of power, which is really life itself, withers within us...The craftsman or scientist or teacher—or, for that matter, the tarot reader—will find the power increase over the years the more they discharge it into physical reality.

Day Seventy-Eight
Happy new year, school is back in session!
The first thing I did this morning was drop off new supplies in the social studies office (my dad had given me a mountain of sticky notes and pens). Then I had to grade the projects my students had done before vacation. The Principal stopped by to ask me about a few things while I was doing that, but I still had plenty of time. In fact, I had a few extra minutes to putter around before the bell.
And then it was time for Global Studies! I had students share out the information they'd learned in their projects (answers to different questions on the US Citizenship Test), then challenged them to a Kahoot based on that same information. It was a fun way to get back into the swing of things, and set up my next lesson, which is a deeper dive into how the US government is structured.
In APGOV, we chatted for a bit about the upcoming primary, and the states that have removed President Trump from the ballot, and other current political news. Afterwards, we got into my actual lesson. Students read about demographic trends in political ideology and party affiliation, then took a look at the latest versions of the Republican and Democratic party platforms. They read the preambles, and we discussed tone, points of emphasis, etc... I thought that went quite well, as there were a lot of excellent questions and observations.
I had a lengthy leadership team meeting in the afternoon. The Principal had a lot of information to pass on to us, and some things he wanted our feedback on. We also reviewed some attendance data that had been compiled by Dean 1 and the administrative staff, and talked about what's improving (overall attendance, tardiness) and what's not (early dismissals). The school board sets our attendance policies, and our message to them is going to be that this data ought to be used in that policy-making process going forward.
Anyways.
I caught the tail end of track practice, then went back to my classroom to grade some miscellaneous stuff and prepare for tomorrow. Then I went to the grocery store, where the cashier- a student, but not one of mine- recognized that I was a teacher, asked for my name, and then informed me that I was legendary.
Tumblr media
I figure that's starting the year off right!
