Gotta be honest, the idea that Luke wouldn’t send a child alone in an X-wing with only a droid for company is funny to me.
Like, we’re talking about the same Luke, right? The one who spent years bulls-eyeing womp rats and took the experience from that to then blow up the Death Star? The one who was like “This is a trap… I’m gonna walk right into it.” The one who was like “I will rescue my dear friend by waltzing in without a disguise and being as obnoxious as possible.” “How do we get out of this situation? How about we convince these small bear creatures that our droid is a god, that will probably work.” “I know Darth Vader is a murderer who murdered my Ben and is trying to murder me and all, but he is also my dad and therefore I love him.”
Luke would send a child in an X-wing without even fucking thinking about it! Do you REALLY think LUKE SKYWALKER is a reasonable human being?? Are you honestly trying to tell me that this man who has been driving the same fucking ship for like ten years would understand how dangerous it is to put an unsupervised child in a vehicle??? Do you really honestly truly think that Luke knows how to care for children????
You see, a lot of people like to portray Luke as perfect. And this is the same issue I have with people who portray Obi-Wan as perfect, or Yoda, or Mace, or literally any character in all of Star Wars because the whole point is that the are flawed human beings!
But it’s ESPECIALLY egregrious with Luke because I don’t know where any of you got this idea that Luke is a sweet summer child??? This man has a death count of over one million. This man had Seen Some Shit that it is literally impossible not to be affected by. Why do so many people assume that Luke at the end of the Trilogy is the same as Luke at the beginning of the Trilogy? He’s changed! He’s a different person! That’s what makes the Original Trilogy such a good trilogy!! It’s basic storytelling!!! A character canNOT be at the same place mentally as when they began the story, or else it’s not a good story!
But also, I hate the way this colours shipping fics with Luke. Like, listen. There is no ship where Luke should be the straightman of the relationship. Luke Skywalker just is not normal. He’s weird, he’s deranged, he’s so strange; he cannot be a straightman, it just doesn’t work. It’s so completely out of character it isn’t even funny.
The joy of shipping Luke is that every single thing that you can ship Luke with will come out the other sode looking rational.
Han Solo is a smuggler who hangs out with a Wookiee and who does extremely dangerous, stupid shit, but next to Luke?? Rational. Normal. Someone who uses their brain, Luke, take notes-
Din Djarin is a bounty hunter who decided that he would rather destroy an entire group of highly dangerous men than give up the cute kid he just found. But compared to Luke? At least he has equipment on him!
Mara Jade literally was mind-controlled by the Emperor and was Darth Vader’s coworker and was also a Jedi (something that no rational person would be honestly) and even she comes across as normal compared to Luke Skywalker.
I know this is rambly and disjointed and I know people disagree with me, but like??? Yes, I think Luke is great with kids. Yes, I think Luke is a good teacher. Yes, I think Luke is the type of person to wave goodbye as an infant flies off in his warship. I think Luke is the type of person who would throw a child into the air way too high and then catch them. Where did the idea that he’s the responsible parent come from? Luke is teaching infants how to use laser swords, do you REALLY THINK that’s what a responsible parent would do????

Ghost Part 1
Tumblr media
AN: everyone ignore the fact that it took me almost a year to finish this lol
Synopsis: You're an OnlyFans model that gets pregnant by none other than Jack Harlow, who runs at the first sign of taking responsibility for his actions. But soon enough, his responsibilities get to be too much for him to ignore
Pairing: Jack Harlow x Reader
Please Do Not Repost My Content Anywhere
'I'm a good girl'
At least that’s what you told yourself
But good girls didn't go to school by day and were a cam girl at night.
However, you were
It was only for a little while
Just until you finished school
You needed a way to pay for it somehow
Besides the money was good and it kept a roof over your head
You admit that this wasn't your first choice in a career path obviously, but you had to do what you had to do in order to survive.
You had been in foster care since you were 9 because your parents and brother passed away in a car accident while you were the lone survivor
Your grandparents were older and they couldn't take care of you so that's when you went into the system
Your aunt which was your mother's sister and your mother didn't get along and she said that there was no way in hell that she would take you and that you were someone else’s problem
I mean she did have five kids of her own to take care of, but to be that cold hearted to a nine year old?
You admit that you had survivor's guilt and would do anything to have all three of them here with you. But you knew that they would have wanted for you to have the best life that you could possibly have and that you were going to make sure of it.
But if they were here, then maybe just maybe, your current life would be different.
You had dreams of becoming a preschool teacher since you were diagnosed at 15 with PCOS and you were told that your chances of getting pregnant were slim to none. It definitely hurt because since you didn’t have any immediate family left, that you wanted to have as many as you could.
But you figured if you couldn’t have any of your own that you would teach them instead. If you could plant little seeds into their minds that will be able to set them up for greatness then you were all for it.
You put on your newest lingerie set that was gifted to you by one if not your favorite supporter you would say who went by the name Mr.Missionary and was setting up your camera in order to get the perfect view.
One thing about you is that you never showed your face
Only thing they could see was from the neck down
You did that on purpose because the last thing you wanted was for someone to know what you looked like.
It wasn't the fact that you were embarrassed of what you did, but you wanted to remain as anonymous as possible so for the future, your career wouldn't be impacted. You could only imagine what would happen if someone found out what you had done in college when you were teaching their small children. It probably wouldn’t be good and the next thing that would probably happen is you being out of a job.
You saw time and time again that happening to different people and that's one thing you did not want to deal with.
But, back to Mr. Missionary
He was a sweet talker and knew exactly what to say.
It all started with a message from him asking you if you were comfortable showing your face to him.
Since he had been supportive of you since day one, you figured why not. But also told him not to share any of the photos that you sent him to anyone else.
So your jaw definitely dropped when you answered the incoming facetime call and was staring back at no one other than Jack Harlow.
The two of you would talk every week and you mentioned one time how you had never been off the east coast before and would love to go. Only Fans did pay well now that you had a lot of subscribers, but it hadn’t always been that way. However, you really only used the money for school and to make sure that you had a place to live.
The semester had just ended and you weren't taking any classes during the summer so Jack offered to fly you out to L.A. to spend a week with him while he was recording new songs and you quickly said yes.
This would happen periodically, him flying you out to different cities to meet him all summer long and soon you found yourself getting ready for the new semester to start.
You had about another year to go at Howard University in D.C. until you graduated with your degree in early childhood education while your friend Nadia was majoring in business administration.
The two of you met your freshman year and had been close ever since when you had to take a few prerequisite classes together.
She was from Louisville and was a big fan of Jack, but you didn't bother telling her what had happened between the two of you.
You signed an NDA anyway.
And since she had gone home for the summer, she had no reason for the thought to even cross her mind.
But when you just so happened to go to your OB/GYN appointment you had gotten a huge surprise.
You were pregnant and apparently had been for three months.
Your period was irregular and you would often go for months without getting one so you thought nothing of it.
The first thing you did when you got back to your apartment was call Nadia and couldn’t help but to blurt it out.
"I'M PREGNANT!"
"Well first of all hello to you too and WHAT?!”
"I can't get pregnant! At least that's what I was told. They told me that when I was fifteen!"
"Well apparently you can. How far along are you?"
"Three months apparently and I had absolutely no idea. I wasn’t craving anything, no morning sickness, no nothing. None of the usual symptoms."
"Oh so when the semester ended, those legs were open for business, huh?"
"NADIA! BE SERIOUS PLEASE." You said while pacing around your bedroom.
"Well, who's the father? Did you tell him?"
"Sooo, this is probably going to sound really bad." You muttered while pouring yourself something to drink.
You couldn’t see Nadia’s face, but you could just imagine how it looked.
"I mean, how bad? You're an adult who can do what you want."
"Ummm…. He’s one of my supporters for my cam show."
"Y/N!!!! IS THAT WHY YOU WERE FLYING EVERYWHERE THIS SUMMER!? YOU WENT TO SEE HIM DIDN’T YOU? DO YOU KNOW HOW DANGEROUS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN?"
"Um, maybe and well, I didn’t die."
"What do you mean maybe?! It's either yes or no! And you didn’t die, but now you came back pregnant!”
"Uh, then yes."
"You need to tell him NOW. It’s his responsibility as much as it is yours."
"I will and then I'll call you back." You said while sighing.
You didn't have enough courage to call him, but you needed to. It was better to get it over with sooner rather than later.
You knew he was busy and decided to text him first.
You- Hey, call me when you get a chance
Jack- I will right before I go to sleep tonight. Hopefully I can get another private show 😉
You didn't even bother responding and just waited for your phone to ring while working on assignments you had to do for class instead.
Another thing you had to worry about now was graduating on time since you were now pregnant and would be due at the start of the last semester before you graduated.
It was around 11:52 pm when your phone finally rang indicating an incoming facetime call from Jack.
"Hey pretty girl. I'm sorry it took me so long to call you.”
"Hey. It's okay, I was just studying while I waited.”  You quietly said and Jack was immediately eyeing you knowing that something was wrong.
"You okay?" Jack curiously asked while looking at your solemn expression.
"No, not exactly." You quietly responded while starting to fidget as you closed your textbook that was in front of you.
It was now or never.
"What's going on?"
You took a deep sigh before the words left your mouth. Might as well get it over with.
"I'm pregnant."
Jack immediately went quiet and pinched the bridge of his nose before he said anything.
"I thought you said that you couldn't get pregnant and I always wore protection every time just in case."
"I thought so too and obviously you didn't."
"How do you know it's mine?" You immediately rolled your eyes.
"Didn't I spend basically the entire summer with you?"
"Some of it, not all of it. I don't know what you were doing when you weren't with me." Your jaw had hit the floor. He had some nerve.
"Don't do that. Why would I lie?"
"I'm being honest. Don't get mad at me for telling the truth. And why would you lie? Because I’m a millionaire the last time I checked, that’s why. Sounds like you tried to trap me."
"Look, I just want them taken care of. AND EXCUSE ME? TRAP YOU? ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?"
"I still don't see what that has to do with me and yes trap me, you heard me the first time."
"Seriously? How could you even say that? I have given you no reason to think that about me."
“Well people can surprise you, everyday. Until I get a paternity test, I'm not believing anything."
That was about three years ago and nothing has changed since then.
You were basically a single mother and Jack popped in occasionally when he wanted to.
Which wasn't often.
You were struggling living on your own with no support system in D.C. and Nadia had convinced you to move to Kentucky to be near her so she could help out as much as she could. Her business was finally taking off and she told you that you could find a teaching job at one of the elementary schools since they were hiring for preschool teachers.
When Jack found out that you had moved to Louisville he was not only convinced that you trapped him, but now you were stalking him too.
He had no idea that you were in this by yourself, literally. No help from family or anything.
You could count on one hand how many times Jack had seen Ace since birth and you came to the conclusion that you were probably going to be a single mother and stopped asking him for anything. The last time that he had talked to you was almost two months ago. During that three minute conversation he didn’t even ask how his son was and he only lived less than fifteen minutes away from you.
After the paternity test was done and Jack was proven to be the father, he had accidentally left the paper out on the table and no one other than his younger brother Clay found it. He had questioned Jack about it and because Clay was holding the obvious proof in his hands there was no possible way for him to back out of it. Clay then took it upon himself to reach out to you because he wanted to meet Ace. He met him when he was a month old and at that time Jack had only been to see him once. Because of how he acted, you knew early on not to put his last name on Ace’s birth certificate.
After moving to Louisville, you met two of Nadia’s close friends, Blaire and Liv. Blaire was a baker who had her own bakery and would have breakfast waiting for you every day for you and Ace before you dropped him off at daycare and went to the school to teach while Liv taught kindergarten at the same school where you were. All four of you had become extremely close, but none of them knew who Ace’s father was.
Because you signed an NDA, all you ever told them was that he really wasn’t a part of his life and that you were doing this all on your own and they accepted that as an explanation, but it was only a matter of time before they found out the truth. You knew that they would all look at him differently because they were such big fans of him. Plenty of times they had asked you to go to his concerts with him, but you steadily declined, but they never questioned why.
All Jack did was send money to help with daycare and that’s when he actually remembered to do it. You got a discount since it was actually in the same school as where you taught, but it was still expensive. Especially on the salary that you got.
It was currently almost four in the afternoon and Jack was supposed to pick Ace up to spend time with him and you were hoping that they would be able to spend more time together. You knew that his career was demanding and he was at the height of it, but you just wanted Ace to have a relationship with him. He told you that he would be coming around 2 and that he would take Ace to the Louisville basketball game later with the rest of PG and spend the weekend with him.
From what you knew, Urban was the only one who knew about Ace and was guessing that this would be his opportunity to tell them. You sighed as you looked at your baby waiting at the door with his little backpack on wanting to see the moment his dad was going to come through the door.
After a while, he just sat down and sighed which made your heart break.
“Mommy, daddy not coming is he?” He quietly asked you and all you did was sigh.
“We just have to wait and see, bub. Maybe daddy got busy and got caught up with doing something.” One thing that you were tired of doing was making excuses for Jack.
“Does daddy love me?” He looked up at you with tears in his eyes and you quickly sat down next to him and slid him into your lap.
It took everything in you not to cry right then and there, but immediately pulled out your phone to call him.
“Of course he does. Here, baby. Let’s call him to see where he is.”
You didn’t know if you were trying to convince Ace or convince yourself.
You put the phone to Ace’s ear and Jack actually picked up on the third ring which you were surprised by.
“Hello?”
“DADDY! Where you at? Still coming to get me?”
“Oh, hey little man. Um, something came up, but I promise to get you another day.”
“But you promised you were coming today. You said that last time.”
“I know, bubs but I’ve just been so busy.”
Not wanting for the conversation to go on any further, Ace handed the phone to you with tears in his eyes, threw off his backpack and ran down the hallway into his room.
“Ace!” You called after him, but he continued down the hallway.
“Are you…..? Are you serious right now?! You made him cry because all you do is fucking lie to him and to me!” You took a deep breath before letting him have it.
“Y/N, please don’t fucking start.” You heard him say before sighing and you could hear cheering going on in the background indicating that he was already at the game.
“Oh, I’m going to fucking start because he has been excited for this all week! Why would you bail on your son like that? You did the same shit last time. You begged me to come and see him and when I told you what time would work best, what did you do? Not even bother to show up. Either you want to be in his life or you don’t and you need to make a decision. Tired of my child constantly being disappointed in his father.”
“Look, I’ll talk to you later.” Jack said and then hung up without another word leaving you fuming from your conversation.
You simply got up while grabbing Ace’s backpack and made your way to his room. Once you opened the door, you found him laying down with his head resting on his hands just staring off into space.
“Ace….”
“Mommy, can we just go to the park?” He asked not even mentioning what Jack had done.
“Sure, baby. Whatever you want. I also think that it’s a perfect day for ice cream. What do you say?”
At the mention of ice cream, Ace immediately perked up and eagerly nodded his head.
“Can I get chocolate chip cookie dough?”
“Whatever my Ace wants, he gets.”
Upon hearing this, he immediately smiled and you were happy that you could take his mind off of what his father had promised him, at least for a little while.
Two weeks had passed and you were rushing to get both of you out of the door and to Blaire’s bakery for breakfast so that the two of you would at least have something on your stomach for the busy day ahead.
You had sent a text last night to Jack asking him to send you money for daycare for the month of October, but he never responded leaving you frustrated because you literally now only had 24 hours to come up with the money otherwise you weren’t quite sure what you were going to do.
Your Only Fans was still active, but that was a last resort.
While driving to the bakery, Ace fell asleep in the backseat when you decided to call him.
“Yes, Y/N? What now? I’m busy.”
“Good morning to you too. Did you get my text last night?” You asked after rolling your eyes at how he greeted you.
“Didn’t I just give you money for daycare? Why do you need more already?”
“You see, Jackman….”
“Don’t call me that.”
“That’s your name isn’t it? Given to you by your parents?”
“Look, what do you want? I’m in the studio.”
“No need to be rude. I need more money for daycare. I have to pay it every month.”
“Why the fuck is it so expensive? Got damn a round trip to L.A. is cheaper.”
“I don’t know, but I already get a discount and I have to pay it by tomorrow so can you just send it to me?”
“1600 dollars?!? That’s the discounted price? You have got to be fucking kidding me. They act like you have six fucking kids. He’s one person.”
“Just… can you do it or not? I wouldn't ask you unless I absolutely had to.” You asked, hating that you even had to do so.
“Yeah, I’ll send it and you better be using it for daycare and not something else. Because if I find out you did, you better not ask me for it again. Anything else you want to bother me about?”
“Ace is in the car. Do you want to say good morning to him?”
“Not really. I’ll call him later. Bye.”
“I-....”
Jack hung up without another word and all you did was shake your head at him and how your three year old is more well mannered than he is.
Once you pulled up to the bakery, Blaire met you outside on the curb and immediately ran to your window with a bag of food as well as two drinks. A hot chocolate for Ace and her specially made coffee for you. You swore that she put jet fuel in it and as many times as you asked her for the recipe, she never told you.
It literally allowed for you to stay energized throughout the day and didn't even want to know how much caffeine was in it.
She handed you yours, while she opened Ace’s door and handed him his.
“Thank you, Auntie Blaire.” He quietly said before taking it and you looked back at him to see that he was pouting and Blaire immediately asked him what was wrong before you could.
“Daddy didn’t say good morning to me when he talked to mommy.”
Oh.
So he was awake.
“I’m just sure he was really busy. You can try calling him later once you get home, yeah?” She said to try and get a smile at him, but all he did was nod his head.
So much for getting a good start to the day.
Ace had been upset the entire time he was in daycare even when you went to go and check on him and brought a cookie as a peace offering which he wasn't excited by and thought that making his latest favorite dinner might take his mind off of it.
You never in a million years thought that Ace would love to help you cook, but here you were. He told you that he wanted to be a chef when he grew up, so you obviously set him up with everything that he might need.
He told you on the way home that he wanted to make chicken parm with noodles so you stopped by the store to grab the ingredients.
Ace was wearing his apron that you had gotten him as a gift for his birthday which said Chef Ace on it and standing on his step stool to add salt to the boiling water for the noodles while you were finishing cutting up the chicken and about to start making the breading for it.
He didn't bring up for the rest of the day what had happened with Jack earlier, but you had a feeling that it was coming and more than likely it would be around bedtime. But for now, you were simply going to focus on spending time with your little one.
“Ace, do you want to grab the Italian seasoning for mommy to use?”
“Yes!”
He promptly moved his step stool to be in front of the spice cabinet and climbed up when there was a knock on the door.
Ace had handed it to you and stepped down before going to get a sip of juice out of his sippy cup.
“Be right back, bubs. Remember don't touch anything without mommy being in here with you. We don't need you getting hurt.”
“Okay, promise.” He quickly answered before taking another swig of his juice as you went to answer the door to come face to face with Nadia,  Blaire, and Liv.
“Heyyy. Blaire told us baby daddy troubles this morning sooooo…. We brought wine and lemon cake that Blaire made for Ace.” Nadia said as she held up the wine and Liv held up the cake and all three of them were smiling back at you.
“You guys didn't….”
“Shut up and let us in. Yes we did and what is our little chef making tonight?” Liv asked as you moved to the side and let them in while closing the door behind you.
“Chicken parm and salad and Blaire’s cake can be added to that now.”
“HI AUNTIES!” You heard Ace as he ran full speed towards the four of you.
“Auntie’s baby!” Nadia exclaimed as she opened her arms to engulf him into a hug.
“Food should be about done in another thirty minutes.”
“Well until then, we have the wine to keep us occupied.”
After gushing over how good the meal was along with Blaire’s lemon cake, Nadia pulled out her phone and shoved it towards you.
“What am I looking at?” You asked her as Ace had climbed into your lap.
“Jack Harlow and his No Place Like Home concert. I thought I would get tickets for all of us to go.”
Ace then peered at her phone and got a confused look on his face.
“Oh, that's daddy!”
Silence.
Looks of shock.
Looks of disbelief.
Nadia, Liv, and Blaire knew how intelligent Ace was so they didn't think that this would be something that he would lie about all while trying to wrap their heads around it.
When no one said anything, Ace turned to look at you.
“Are we going to call him before I go to sleep?”
“Um, sure bubs. We’ll call him. Do you want to go and pick out a book for us to read tonight before we do?”
He eagerly nodded before hopping down off your lap and heading to his bookshelf in his bedroom.
All you did was sigh and wait for the interrogation to begin.
Nadia was first.
“Y/N!!!!! I…. WHAT!?”
“Do not say anything because the last thing I need is him finding out that other people know.”
“He is a literal ASSHOLE to you and Ace. The mother of his son and his actual son. All the shit that you’ve told us he’s done!?! Or hasn't done for that matter.” Liv exclaimed as she poured herself another glass of wine.
“So that's who was flying you out that summer?”
You simply nodded.
“Y/N…..”
“Look, I don't need the looks of pity. I’m fine, my son is fine and that's all that matters. We’re going to be okay with or without him.”
Blaire who had been quiet the entire time simply shook her head.
“I can always call my brothers to jump him.”
“NO, BLAIRE!”
“The offer still stands. Just say the word.” She replied while shrugging.
“I know how you three love his music so get the tickets and have fun. Me and Ace will be okay.”
“No. One band, one sound bitch. If you have beef with Jack Harlow, so do we.” Nadia said while crossing her arms.
“Come to think of it… Ace does look an awful lot like him.”
“All I can do every day when we go out is pray that no one notices. I have to protect him and it’s sad that I actually have to do it from his father.”
It was around 7 PM when you had finished giving Ace a bath and had finished reading the book that he picked out earlier to him when he asked to call Jack.
“Can we call daddy now?” He asked looking up at you hopeful and all you did was give him a small smile.
“Of course we can.”
You grabbed your phone and attempted to call Jack on facetime while handing it to Ace.
All it did was continuously ring and you saw the pout on Ace’s face become more pronounced.
“Maybe, he’s just busy, bubs.” You quietly said before you took your phone back and the look of disappointment across his face broke your heart.
“He’s always busy, mommy.”
“But, at least you get to spend the day with him tomorrow! That’s something to be excited about. Do you have any idea about what you want to do?”
Jack had begged you to come and get him tomorrow to make up for not taking him to the basketball game with him and as much as you felt that he was going to go back on his word, but you were willing to give him another chance. But the chances were slowly running out.
“No, I’m just sleepy.”
“Okay, let’s get tucked in so we can sleep.”
Once you had gotten Ace settled, you went into your room and logged onto your banking app to see that Jack in fact did send you the money to pay for daycare and you let out a sigh of relief that you didn’t realize that you had been holding.
Ten minutes later, you got a text from him.
Jack- I’ll come and get him tomorrow. Be there around nine.
Hopefully this was a way for him to redeem himself for not showing up the other day and prayed that he would follow through.
You were tired of seeing your child disappointed.
The next morning after getting Ace ready, Clay came to get him and you would say that you were surprised that it wasn’t Jack, but that would be a lie. Ace was still excited to see Clay, so the last thing you wanted to do was upset him. You got to have a full day to yourself which you hadn’t had in a while.
Your time was spent going to the mall, seeing a movie, and even going to your favorite restaurant by yourself.
You made sure to soak this all in because you didn’t know the next time that you would be able to get another opportunity to do this and spend your time and money on yourself.
It was around 5 PM when Clay dropped off Ace who you could tell was still on a sugar high since he was running around the apartment and not able to keep still for three minutes when you got on the topic of Clay’s brother since you knew that it was inevitable.
"Clay, I have given him chance after chance to do right by him and he literally disappoints me and him every time."
"I know and I'm…."
"No. Do not apologize for him. If he could have just seen his face when he promised to come and get him to go to the game with all of you and to have a cooking date and he didn't show. Like my baby was bawling with tears running down his face and asked me does daddy even love me? Clay my heart can't take too much more of this. This has been going on for way longer than it should have. My son is my entire world and he deserves a father in his life that wants to be consistent and be there for him. I don't think Jack will ever get there."
"So I guess I shouldn't tell you that he still hasn't told our parents about you or Ace?" Clay asked while scratching the back of his neck.
You then looked at Clay in disbelief as Ace came up on your left side and lifted his hands up to indicate he wanted to be picked up by you or his uncle and Clay quickly did.
"Your brother is just full of surprises isn't he? You're more of a father to him than he is."
"Reality hasn't hit him yet."
"It doesn't take three years. It's just crazy how you were the only one who welcomed him with open arms, but then again you had already saw the DNA results so you had no choice but to believe me. I guess Jack never thought in his wildest dreams he would sleep with a cam girl and end up with a kid."
Just then your phone went off indicating a text from the man of the hour.
Jack- Y/N, I know you're mad at me but I promise to get him next time.
You- Don't even worry about it. Once again your little brother is stepping up and doing what you should have done. So much that he actually called him dad the other day. Think about that.
You saw Jack would start texting and then stop indicating that he didn't have a good comeback for that one.
How could he?
It had been a quick slip up a few weeks ago by Ace, but Clay simply brushed it off and thought nothing of it. You remembered him saying to Ace, ‘Well we do look alike, don’t we?’ And he quickly agreed.
And just then your phone went off indicating Jack was calling you.
"What?" You asked as you rolled your eyes.
"I'll be outside in 20 minutes and I want to see my son."
Once you hung up, Clay turned to you and asked you what he said.
“He said that he wants to see him, but my thing is that if you really did want to see him then you would have gotten him earlier. The last thing he better do when he comes in here is make a scene.”
Twenty minutes didn’t even pass before you heard knocking on the front door and you immediately rolled your eyes before getting up to answer it.
Once you did, Jack was clearly annoyed and was looking right past you to see where Ace was.
“Where’s my son?”
“Oh, so now he’s your son? Are there certain days of the week that you claim him or?”
“Y/N, I’m not doing this with you right now, where is Ace?”
“He’s with your brother in the kitchen if you must know and you better not go in there and make him upset.”
“Now, why would I make him upset?”
“I don’t know, you tell me. Since all he knows you’re good for is disappointing him.”
Jack didn’t even bother to respond as he walked past you to come face to face with Clay playing with Ace.
Once Ace saw him, he quickly ran to hide behind Clay.
“Bubs, it’s me, daddy. No reason to be scared.”
All Ace did was peek out behind Clay’s leg who was trying to also tell him that it was okay.
“I’m sorry that I didn’t come and get you today, but I promise that I will next time.”
This led to Ace shaking his head no and holding onto Clay’s leg tighter.
“Ace, what’s the matter?” Jack asked seeing as Ace had never acted this way towards him before.
“Daddy, you forgot about me….. Again.”
“I… I didn’t forget. Daddy’s just been really busy, but I’m here now.”
“Maybe if you actually showed up when you were supposed to this wouldn’t be happening.” Clay snapped at Jack as Ace quickly ran to you and you picked him up as he hid in the crook of your neck.
“Clay, I already get it enough from Y/N, I don’t need to hear it from you too.”
“Well obviously you do, because hearing it from one person obviously isn’t enough! Now, why is your kid calling me daddy? Oh, right. Because his real dad actually ignores him.” Clay said while raising his voice at his older brother.
“I DON’T IGNORE MY SON!”
“WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU ACTUALLY SPENT TIME WITH HIM? I’VE SEEN HIM MORE TIMES SINCE HE’S BEEN ALIVE THAN YOU HAVE!”
At their heated exchange, Ace began to cry and you knew that you needed to put a stop to this immediately.
“Okay, you two, we’re done. Jack, get out.”
“If I leave, I’m taking Ace with me.”
“You are not taking MY son anywhere. Can’t you see how upset you made him? And I told you once you step foot in here not to upset him and you did the exact opposite. Just leave. You've done enough.”
Jack had let out a frustrated sigh as he was contemplating his next move. He stepped towards you, but was immediately blocked by Clay stepping in front of you.
“Just do what she asked you to do and leave.”

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11 Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part 16 Part 17 Part 18 Part 19 Part 20
There were not many changes to your life since you got married to Joel because you had lived with him before the two of you got married anyway. The differences were probably that you were now Mrs. Miller, Sarah’s legally your daughter, she called you mommy now, your house was sold, and the walls were full of your wedding and family pictures. You asked for a big frame for the picture of you with your wedding dress, Joel with his tux, and Sarah in the middle with a flower crown. She was your flower girl for your wedding. You hang the picture in the living room.
“Let’s go babygirl, you’re gonna be late for school.” Joel waited for you and Sarah at the door.
It was Sarah’s first day of preschool and she was so excited and asked you to help her dress up like a princess. On the other hand, you were nervous. She had never made any friends before so you were worried she might have some problems in school. You loved her so much that you didn’t want anyone to hurt her.
“Pretty.” You finished tying her hair and kissed her forehead.
“You look beautiful, princess.” Joel held his daughter’s hand and walked her to the car.
You followed them from behind and sat in the passenger seat.
“You excited, babygirl?” Joel looked at the rear view mirror to see his daughter.
“Yes! Yes!” She bounced on her seat excitedly.
You turned your head to look at her and smiled when you were actually trying to hide your worries. Joel recognized you being anxious but he didn’t want to talk about it in front of his daughter. So he just looked at you, held your hand and kept driving.
“We’re here.” Joel parked his car.
“Yay! Yay!” Sarah was so excited for her first day of school.
You got out of the car and helped Sarah out of the car. Joel grabbed her purple backpack and helped her carry it. You and Joel walked Sarah to her class and met her homeroom teacher.
“Good morning, I’m Ms. Andrews.” She shook Joel’s and your hand.
“Good morning, I’m Joel Miller and this is my wife. This is our daughter Sarah.” Joel rested both of his hands on Sarah’s shoulder.
“It’s her first day, please take good care of our daughter.” You smiled at her.
“I will. Don’t worry.” She assured you.
“Come one Sarah, class is starting.” She invited Sarah inside the class.
After you and Joel waved Sarah goodbye, both of you walked back to the car. You sighed as you closed the car door.
“You okay, darlin’?” Joel asked you as he put on his seatbelt.
“She’ll be okay, right?” You looked at Joel.
“Hey, she’ll be fine. I’m sure she’s gonna make a lot of friends.” Joel put his hand on top of yours that was resting on your lap.
“Okay.” You nodded.
“She’ll be fine. Don’t worry.” Joel reassured you and rubbed your hand with his thumb.
Joel drove you to the cafe then he went to work. Joel promised to pick you up earlier to pick up Sarah from school together. The day felt long as you were worried about how Sarah was doing at school. Your mind was full of thoughts thinking what you should do to comfort Sarah if she went home from school sad. You tried to distract yourself by helping to bake and decorating the cakes. It was finally time to pick Sarah up from school. Joel’s car was in front of your cafe so you took your purse and said bye to your employees.
“Where is she?” You tip-toed to get a clearer view behind all of the other parents.
“There she is.” Joel pointed at Sarah who just got out of her class.
“She looks happy. You have nothing to be worried about.” Joel rubbed your back in circles as he assured you.
You couldn’t see Sarah because you were too short and Joel was tall enough to see what was in front of him.
“Daddy! Mommy!” You heard Sarah’s voice.
She ran through the adults and jumped to hug your legs.
“How was your day?” You crouched and stroked her hair.
“I made lots of lots of friends. I met Emma, Lily, Katie, ..” She went on and on.
You nodded and smiled at her. You were relieved she had a good day and made some new friends. Joel chuckled as he saw his daughter so happy. He was proud that her daughter made it through her first day of school.
“You wanna get some ice cream, babygirl?” Joel lifted his daughter and kissed her cheek.
“I get ice cream?” She squealed.
“Yeah, baby. You did well on your first day of school.” Joel chuckled.
“Yay!” Sarah raised her hand to the air.
You chuckled and followed them to the car. Joel drove you and Sarah to the regular ice cream place that the three of you always went to.
“Stwabewwy!!” Sarah loved strawberry ice cream.
“I’ll get chocolate as usual.” You ordered.
“Coffee, please.” Joel ordered coffee flavored ice cream.
You loved chocolate, he loved coffee, Sarah loved strawberry. Each of you had your own favorite and the three of you always shared a spoon for a taste with each other.  Any family that saw the three of you were definitely jealous of how harmonized your family was.
"Can I have a little sister or little brother?" Sarah suddenly asked.
"Hmm?" You raised your eyebrows with the ice cream spoon still in your mouth.
Joel didn't expect his daughter to ask for a sibling so he was shocked too.
"Emma has a baby sister, Katie has a baby brother. I want to have one too." Sarah ate her ice cream and bounced on her seat.
"Well, that's uh.." Joel didn't know what to say because he needed your consent because you would be the one carrying a baby inside you for 9 whole months.
You just stared at Joel because you also didn't know what to say. You hadn't had the time to talk about having another baby with Joel since you got married because you were too focused on putting Sarah to school, expanding your cafe, and Joel also got another big project. So the two of you were super busy.
"What do you think mama?" Joel passed the question to you.
You widened your eyes.
"Hmm." You just hummed and chuckled.
Sarah pouted and finished her ice cream. The three of you went home after.
"I'm happy she had an amazing first day, Joel." You sighed as you sat on the couch after putting Sarah to bed.
"Me too, baby." Joel sat across from you on the armchair.
You and Joel enjoyed your night in the living room with a glass of wine. Talking about his day, your day, Sarah and what she asked you and Joel earlier. Suddenly, Joel stared at you.
"Can we have one more?" Joel suddenly asked.
"What do you mean?" You sipped on your wine.
"You'll look so beautiful pregnant, baby. And it would be nice to see our little one with a mix of you and me running around, playing with Sarah." Joel chuckled.
"All of sudden?" You raised your eyebrows.
"Can we have one more? Pretty please." Joel begged you with his brown puppy eyes.
You just gave him a smirk and shrugged.
"Is that a yes, maybe or a no?" Joel didn't understand your reaction.
You smirked and shrugged again.
"Just so you know, I'm ovulating today which means.." Joel cut you.
"Oohh I'm sooo gonna make you pregnant." Joel put his wine glass on the table and crawled his way to you and started kissing you.
You chuckled as you put your wine glass on the table then leaned back to get a comfortable position. You knew you and Joel were gonna make babies tonight. And yes, on your couch.
"We can't let Sarah see us." You whispered.
"She's sleeping, don't worry. We just have to be quiet." Joel whispered to your ear.
"Okay. We gotta stay quiet." You giggled.
Joel pressed his lips to yours as you wrapped your arms around his shoulders, caressing his back. He put his hands on your waist and snaked his way to the back of your thigh. Pulling and lifting you suddenly to sit on him. Your legs were now locking his waist. You started feeling aroused and you grinded on his hard cock under his pants. He groaned at your movements and his hands moved its way to your breast under your tank top squeezing it gently. You moaned in his mouth.
You couldn’t wait to feel him so you slipped your fingers to his pants trying to pull his pants off. He understood what you wanted and took off his pants and shirt. You pulled your shorts then he helped you take off your tank top. The two of you went back to position on the couch kissing, touching, and moaning. Joel’s hand cupped your cunt and he felt you so wet.
“So wet for me darlin’.” He mumbled while kissing you.
“Uhm-hmm.” You were so aroused and you couldn’t speak any words.
Joel smirked as he brushed his tip to your clit making you moan loud.
“Shh..” Joel covered your mouth.
You squeezed your eyes shut trying not to make any sound as much as possible. Then Joel brushed his tip again on your clit, teasing it before he slid himself inside you. Both of you moaned softly. You clenched your hand on Joel’s shoulder and he buried his face to your chest. Taking your breast to his mouth, sucking your nipple, biting it gently, arousing you. He started to move his hips and thrusted inside you. You wanted to scream his name but you couldn’t wake Sarah so you clenched your jaw and buried your face to his shoulder. Joel too was trying so hard not to make any loud noise because he didn’t want his daughter to see their parents doing it.
Joel kissed the inside of your breast before he raised his head needing to kiss your lips. His hand cupped your jaw and kissed you, licking your lips and tongue. Swallowing each other moans. Your hand caressing his back and he did the same to you.
His moves suddenly got faster and the sound of his skin bumping on your skin were louder. You bounced on him and lost your balance. So you flew your hand to the couch instinctively for balance. Joel’s arm wrapped around you and kept his pace. You whimpered as you felt close.
“Fuck.” Joel groaned.
“J-joel..” You called his name feeling so close to your climax.
Joel knew you were coming so he quickened his pace and he was close to coming too. You suddenly felt vibrations throughout your body and you shook. You clenched your hand that was resting on the couch and squeezed your eyes shut panting. You came. Joel groaned as he came inside you, releasing his seed to grow a baby inside you. He buried his face to your chest as he caught his breath. You rested your chin on top of his head and chuckled. Joel put his hand behind your head, laid you on your back, and rested your head on the couch's arm. He kissed your lips, then your cheek to your right jaw, and your chin.
“Hope that works.” Joel chuckled and kissed your lips again.
“I can’t wait to be pregnant.” You chuckled and caressed his bearded jaw.
“Another round?” Joel bumped his forehead to yours and you nodded.
*door creaking*
"What was that?" You gasped.
Joel froze and looked towards the stairs.
"I think that's our cue." You whispered and giggled softly.
“Wait, let me finish.” Joel kept thrusting inside you.
"Mommy! Daddy!" You heard Sarah scream and cry.
"Shit! Joel!" You pushed Joel and he groaned softly as he pulled out from you.
You grabbed your clothes and hurriedly dressed up ignoring the dripping cum on your thigh then ran upstairs to check on Sarah. Joel followed you behind.
 "Hey, sweetie. Why are you awake?" You crouched to her and stroked her head.
"What's wrong babygirl?" Joel panted.
"I had a nightmare." She buried her face in your chest.
"Oh baby, come on, mommy and daddy’s here. You’re okay." You lifted her and brought her to your bedroom.
Joel looked at you and made a cross with both of his arms. He was giving you a sign to put Sarah back to her bedroom because both of you weren’t done with your night. You chuckled softly and shook your head. Joel pressed his palms together and mouthed “Please”. He begged you. You mouthed back at him, “Tomorrow, I promise.” He put his hand on his waist and the other rubbed his face in frustration.
“You’re sleeping with mommy and daddy tonight.” You laid her on the bed.
Joel climbed to his side of the bed. And Sarah was now lying between you and Joel.
“Daddy’s here.” Joel patted his daughter’s tummy gently to help her sleep.
After a few pats, Sarah was already back in her dreams. She was probably having a sweet dream now because you could see a smile on her face.
“I think she’s asleep.” You whispered and giggled.
“But I’m not.” Joel smirked and snaked his hand to cup your breast.
“Joel!” You yelled but in a whisper.
You slapped his hand and he pulled back his hand rubbing it.
“Ouch!” He whispered.
“So Sarah’s your number one?” He asked you with a  soft voice so he didn’t wake Sarah.
You smirked and shrugged. Just like he did to you last time.
“I guess I’m number two then.” Joel chuckled, moved closer, and extended his arms wrapping you and Sarah.
To be continued…

This started out as a funny snipper. How tf did it turn into a fanfic?? Also this took me so long anyways, pt3 of the accidental overlord vaggie fic
Alastor: shoves Vaggie between him and Rosie and drops Frank onto her lap
Vaggie: trying to process how tf a giant dragon got through an elevator among many other things
Carmilla: thank you for coming today. I've gathered you all here to talk about the millions of souls-
Vaggie squeaks so quiet no one hears her: I'm sorry fucking how many??....How- How do you check that?? Gets ignored
She's just squeezing poor frank like a stress toy
Carmilla ignores her: You own. And how their at risk with the new extermination schedule. And how we minimize the damage going to be caused by it.
Finally looking aorund the room
Carmilla: Zestial, so god to see you- ....Alastor?? And- eyes narrow the protective overlord
Alastor, leaning over to block vaggie form view because he's petty as fuck: hello! Yes yes, I know, I've been absent for a longgg time and I'm sure youre all DYING to knwo where I've been~
Carmilla:...no. not really, shrugs but welcome back anyways I suppose....I am interested about who you've brought though....
Vaggie: just staring out into space, regretting her life choices and trying to count how many people owe her 'favors'
Carmilla slgihtly concerned/unnerved: In any case, this year's extermination was brutadal. A good 16% of the population was killed off. With them coming back in only 6 months I think it prudent that we-
Velvette: just fucking kicks the door open Yeah, I've got it handled Vox? Are you doubting me? ME might I remind you? Yeah, no. That's what I thought. Yes, yes, I know, thank you V, see you later Okay, bye, kisses darling!
Carmilla: nice of you to finally join us, Velvette. Will you.....colleges? be joining us?
Velvette: What? No way. They have better shit to do than to listen to some old windbag who think she's tough shit! Haha, no. Immm here to represent!
Carmilla:...charming. now, back to what I was saying, we need to-
Velvette: waves her arm frantically
Camilla feeling like a preschool teacher: yes??
Velvette: well, on the topic of discussssss throws exorcists head down let's discuss
Alastor: oooo tasty!!
Vaggie: ohhhhh my god....whispering to herself is that Tuff?? Wtf- how??
Carmilla:......where...did you get this?
Velvette: doesn't matter. We found it, though. And if these angle fuckers can be killed, then the game of cat and mouse has changed, the boys and I have-
Vaggies distressed squeaking as Velvette continues, Zestial jsut slumps his tea
Velvette:....the fuck is wrong with you two?? Looks at vaggie leans downs to get closer....also you're new
Vaggie: uhhhhh......thank?? You??
Velvette: narrows eyes before her head snaps ti zestial
Zestial: we shouldn't go to war with such meger proof.
Velvette:...meger- MEGER PROOF!? ITS a dead fucking Exorcist!!! What more do you WANT!? A video of it being killed?? No- this is definitive proof- if you can't see that, maybe you're going blind old man.
Zestial: it may be dead but how? It could be by a demon, but mayhaps it died due to unrelated reasons
Vaggie: Well, angles have hurt their own kind. Wouldn't be suprised if killing was another option for them
Everyone's heads snap to her
Vaggie:.....did....I say that out loud?
Carmillas narrows her eyes: how do you know that.
Vaggie: I um...I....I saw it happening?
Velvette:....wait aren't you the princesses whore? What are you doing out if your bird cage hm?
Vaggie: I....what??
Carmilla shaking her head: we're getting off topic.
Zestial: Carmilla is right. If we rush to war the angles would purge all of the sinners for daring to even TRY an uprising
Overlords: muttering
Alastor: why don't we put it to a vote?
Vaggie: depends is one of the options 'can we all just go home pelase?'
Alastor: hmmm no!
Vaggie grumbling: I hate you.
Velvette narrows eyes: ohhh okay I see. Grandpa's to scared to make a move! So then there's no point in it huh?
*the respect less song which I am not writing*
Zeezi: pft, what the hell? we literally JUST got here!
odette:....mom??
Carmille:....meeting dismissed.
Vaggie: uh, does this mean we can go home?- gets glared at .....okay sits back down like a scolded kid as she thinks about wtf jsut happened
Vaggie to herself in a defeated tone:.....she never told me how to see how many souls I own.....how many people owe me favors?
Proceeds to try and calculate and count on her fingers and Alastor watches in amusement, after sending off frank, and Rosie watches slightly concerned as to wtf her friend did to this teenage child....and maybe also finding it a bit funny

summary: . . . just a couple of hours after dropping your four year old off for her first day of preschool, you and Eddie are called back to pick her up.
a/n: once more, everyone lives in Hawkins because i said so. mistakes will be fixed later, i’m currently shadowbanned (pretty sure so hi if you see this) and one thing i can’t do is post on the website for some reason so sorry if the formatting is weird. 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭
* . *• + . * . * . *• + . * . * . *• + . * . * . *• + . * .
“Call Friend Bear, call Share Bear, call the whole squad of Care Bears because there is a lack of caring in this room. I don’t care, I really do not give a singular care. None. You wanna know why? ‘Cause they are art. They are a lifestyle. You are gonna watch Cheech & Chong and you are gonna love them.” Argyle ducked around Steve and made a dive for the VHS player.
“You always pick them for your turns on movie night, Argyle, please. I can recite the scripts by now!”
Eddie shook his head, lips curled into an amused smirk as he watched the two fight over what movie to play next. Most of the group had knocked out, not used to being awake that early anymore. He didn’t care what movie was playing, it was like nine in the morning, both you and Eddie had the day off since it was Penny’s first day at preschool and you knew the goodbye when dropping her off would drain you both emotionally.
Penny had cried the whole time, but refused to be anything but positive in her actions. She was tearing up as you both walked her in, fat tears had been rolling down her cheeks when you’d both smothered her with kisses, but it had been saying goodbye to her baby brother that really made her start sobbing. Wayne was barely a year old, but sensing his sister’s distress, was in anguish himself, lower lip wobbling as he cried and reached for her.
You’d wanted to comfort her but she hadn’t let you, she’d even been crying as her teacher lead her away all the while waving goodbye to her family as she disappeared from view.
All your friends—minus the kids, they had school, too—had also called in special favors to get them free for the morning, eager to be there for her first day as well. They hadn’t gone to the preschool with you, but they’d been there to say goodbye before you all left the apartment—Robin and Argyle had cried harder than Penny and Jonathan had been forced to comfort both because Steve was also trying not to get emotional—in the morning and they’d decided to stick around until she got home.
The living room was packed, but Eddie was grateful for everyone’s support and he was trying not to get too choked up about how much they all loved Penny.
You were curled into his side, on the recliner, tears smeared around your eyes as you snuggled into him for comfort. You’d been quiet ever since you got back home, he knew how guilty you were feeling because he felt the same sense of guilt. He wanted to pull Penny out of class so bad but he’d remind himself that all four of you needed to get used to it, she’d have to start going to school eventually.
Barely a few minutes into the trailers, the phone rang. You shifted to stand but Eddie nudged you further into the seat, pressing a kiss to your head as he slipped out from underneath you and grabbed the phone off the hook.
You didn’t even bother acting like you were paying attention to the tv screen, staring at Eddie as he mumbled into the receiver. You watched as he furrowed his brows and ended the conversation quickly.
“What’s wrong?” You asked the second he returned, drawing the attention of the others. Eden—closest to the tv—paused the movie.
“Something happened at the Preschool, they want us to go over.” You tossed the blanket you’d been under off of you as you stood up. Steve, Jonathan and Argyle jumped up too, and Eddie rolled his eyes as their chests’ puffed out.
“Calm down, Three Musketeers, they said it was an altercation with another kid and I’m hoping you’re above fighting a child.”
“Not like Steve would win.” Robin chirped from her place on the floor, holding a hand up to Eden who reached over and gave her an aggressive high five. Under normal circumstances, Eddie would have laughed, but he was worried about his baby and he could tell you were too, since you were already waiting near the door.
“Shut up!” Steve hissed, "I could take a kid!"
“Want us to watch Wayne for you?” Jonathan asked and Nancy nodded, scooting closer to the end of the couch where the baby monitor was placed.
“That’d be great. Hopefully, we won’t be too long.” Eddie grabbed his jacket and yanked his shoes on before you both hurried out the door.
Eddie had insisted on driving since he was pretty sure you’d break a couple of laws if a meant getting to Penny faster and you would have, so that worked out for the best.
He was practically running to keep up with you as you made your to the front office. They’d been expecting you, the same woman who had greeted you when you dropped Penny off lead you back to her classroom.
All the other kids were playing outside, but Penny’s teacher sat with her at a small table as she colored.
Eddie’s heart dropped when he took in her sad face, lips pulled down in misery.
When she heard the door open and looked up to see you and Eddie, she burst into tears, pushing her small plastic chair back from the table as she hopped down and ran towards the both of you.
You dropped down to a squat, letting her run right into your open arms. Her much smaller ones clung to you tightly as she sobbed and you picked her up, cradling the back of her head while you supported her bottom with the other arm.
You traded concerned looks with Eddie, and when it became clear Penny’s tears wouldn’t be stopping, you handed her over to Eddie so you could go talk to her teacher about what had happened to make Penny so upset.
Penny clung to Eddie just as tightly as she had to you. Deciding it’d be best to take her somewhere she could calm down, Eddie carried her out to the empty hallway.
He pressed kisses to her head, nuzzling his face into the curls that tickled against his face as his hand rubbed up and down her back. Eddie could feel the stutter of her breathing as she hiccuped. “Shhh…It’s okay, baby. Daddy’s got you, daddy’s right here. Mommy’s gonna go talk to your teacher and then we’re gonna go home okay? You wanna tell me what’s wrong, little bitty pretty one?”
His voice was gentle enough to sooth her, her crying morphing into just the hiccups. Tears were still falling from her pretty brown, doe eyes as she wiped her face and nose against the material of Eddie’s shirt.
“H-He—he-he pulled on my hair, daddy! And-And he said I look like uh-like uh a clown!” Eddie had expected her to start crying again, but Penny’s small hands curled into fists, bunching up his shirt.
He raised his eyebrows at the anger reflected on her face, it was one he’d seen pretty often as of late; specifically, when she was throwing her tantrums. Eddie never held those against her, aware she was throwing them because she couldn’t properly communicate or understand why she couldn’t drink any of the cleaning chemicals you had around the apartment—he still couldn’t figure out why she wanted to go for the stuff that could kill her so badly, did she actually want to give him a heart attack?—regardless of how trying it could be to his patience. Especially when the tantrums were because he’d told her ‘no’ or didn’t let her act like a brat.
It was obvious Penny had a negative interaction with a classmate, but she didn’t appear sad when she recanted it to him, just angry.
“A little boy pulled your hair?” Eddie asked, and Penny nodded, removing one arm from around his shoulders to rub at her hair. Eddie raised his hand on the arm he wasn’t using to hold Penny to rub at the spot on her head she’d been caressing, obviously still sore from her fight. “Is that why you’re crying, baby? Did he hurt you?”
“Yeah, but-but thas not why I’m cryin’, daddy. I dint cry when he pulled my hair, I used my words like you and mama tell me then-then after I also bit him really hard just so he know to don’t do it again and he cried and told teacher on me.”
Eddie knew he was telling the guys to be above fighting a child, but boy was this kid testing him, coming up to his baby, pulling on her hair and teasing her. Penny’s hair was curly but kind of all the same length, she very much so had the ‘Annie’ curly ‘fro goin on, it was absolutely adorable. People would constantly stop you two to tell you so when you took her out with you and Eddie couldn’t get enough of it. Penny loved it, too. She’d get all shy and hide her face in Eddie’s neck when given a compliment over it, but the second that person was gone, her pretty hair was all she would chat Eddie’s ear off about.
Still, you’d kill him if he let her bite another kid even though Eddie was positive she’d do it again, eventually. He’d been in that little boy’s position before they’d enrolled her in preschool. Granted he didn’t pull her hair or ever hurt her to be on the receiving end of her bites, no, he got to get those just for being her dad and dealing with those tantrums. He’d take being her gnawing post if that meant he got to be her dad though, it was a real privilege.
“You did the right thing by using your words, baby. But remember, we don’t bite people no matter how mad we get. It’s mean. And you’re not a mean girl,” He cooed, heart melting at the way she preened under the attention and he used his thumb to wipe away the last remaining traces of her tears. “You’re my little bitty pretty princess.” He leaned his head down to press his forehead to hers, grinning as she placed her little hand on the side of his face, caressing his cheek.
“I love you, daddy.” Eddie loved it when her tender side came out, usually right after she was done with her fits and apologetic. After you’d give her time to calm down—much better at dealing with her tantrums since they occurred more often with you because unlike Eddie, you had no problem saying no to her—she’d come find you, crawl into your lap, then tell you how much she loves you and say sorry while you cuddled her. Those were some of Eddie’s favorite moments to watch.
“I love you, too.” He moved his head just so he could press a kiss to her palm, not even concerned as to why it seemed to be sticky. He was used to gross stuff like that already.
Penny spent the rest of the time waiting for you telling Eddie all about the other kids she’d met who hadn’t been mean to her and he listened dutifully, wondering how she managed to seemingly remember the name of every single kid in her class but claimed to not remember household rules like how the toilet isn’t for throwing away toys she doesn’t like anymore or where she put her shoes when Eddie wasn’t watching her close enough.
Eventually you emerged from the classroom and immediately covered Penny in kisses but Eddie noticed how you didn’t try to take her from him and he bit back a smirk. You wouldn’t confess no matter how many times Eddie tried to get you to, but he knew Penny was getting too heavy for you; something you didn’t like to think about because you wanted to consider her a little baby forever.
“So what happened?” He asked once you got your fill. You played with Penny’s fingers, turning her palm over to look at the sticky substance on her palm that caught your attention. Jam.
“One of the boys pulled her hair during story time, the teacher said she went over to intervene but that Penny handled it really well and told him to stop.” You tried to hide your grin, because really this shouldn’t be funny, but your daughter cracked you up sometimes. “Then she got down on all fours and bit his leg.”
Eddie cleared his throat, trying his hardest to not laugh. It would only encourage Penny, she loved making people laugh and if she suspected biting peoples' legs was funny, especially to Eddie, she’d be nipping at her every ankle in sight. “Why was she so upset when we got here? She was crying but she told me it wasn’t because of the other kid.”
“When they mentioned we were coming for her, she started to miss us all over again so she got sad.” No way was Eddie gonna have an easy time doing this all over again tomorrow. No freaking way. His hold on Penny tightened ever so slightly. “The little boy’s mom already picked him up, but they said neither is in any real trouble, they just had to let us know it happened. We can take her home.” It didn’t sound like a suggestion, which Eddie was more than happy about.
He filled you in on the car ride home on exactly why Penny had done what she did and he was surprised you weren’t as miffed about it as he was, then you told him that usually happens to girls. The hair pulling and teasing part, not the biting part.
“It used to happen to me all the time,” You explained, “So, I’m not that surprised that it’s her first run in with something like that, especially from a boy. I don’t like it, but I’m not surprised. Besides, I can’t be mad at her. I used to bite people when I was little, too.”
“I knew it, you looked like a biter in all your kid pictures.”
“What’s that supposed to mean!?”
───
All eyes were on the three of you when you entered the apartment, Penny—who was back to normal and happy the whole ride home—started wiggling in Eddie’s hold when she saw half the group of her favorite people waiting for her.
“What happened?” Nancy demanded, turning away from watching Jonathan wipe the baby food off of Wayne’s face. It looked pointless to Eddie considering most of the baby food was on Jonathan.
You and Eddie exchanged smirks, already having predicated their reactions in the car.
“She bit a kid.”
They erupted into cheers, crowding around Penny when she ran to the living room, forcing herself onto Steve’s lap after Eddie put her down to hear all about it.
You watched in amusement, relaxing back into Eddie’s embrace as he slipped his arms around you from behind. He pressed a few wet kisses to the side of your neck, nipping once at your jaw.
“You know, if you still feel the need to bite someone, I’d be more than happy to be of service, Hannibal.”
“You’re not gonna let that go, are you?”
He just hummed into your neck, but you could tell by the smile you felt pressed into the skin there that no, he was so not gonna let that go.

mattdrai fic recs - masterlist
always check the warnings and tags for yourself before reading!! i will probably update this whenever i find a new mattdrai fic i really really enjoy, so be on the lookout if you’re interested!!
by request of @keyshui @whirlpool-blogs & @capsvsducks
medium-to-long fics (in no particular order):
1. slip under the tongue into translation by lighthousetowers ~ 32.2k words ~ mature: the quintessential mattdrai fic, at least in my mind. the vibes are wonderful, the chemistry is palpable, matthew learns german.
2. gather your broken lessons and move by rumandwhine ~ 30.4k words ~ explicit: cathartic, set in the 2028-2029 season, mattdrai figures some stuff out, davo does some best-friending.
3. comment for engagement by RippingOffZeppelin ~ 27.9k words ~ mature: matthew makes a youtube channel for PR purposes. a fic i had so so much fun reading. pretty lighthearted.
4. head above water by yourblues ~ 91.1k words ~ explicit: as far as i’m concerned, this is canon. this fic will make you feel every emotion. the slow burn and enemies to lovers hits hard. by far one of my favorites on this list. it’s a necessary read for any mattdrai fan, and i’ve personally reread it countless times. iconic quotes, iconic story, iconic scenes. i want this story to be engraved on my headstone when i die. also make sure to check out the author’s playlist on spotify after— it’s wonderful.
5. Growing Into Someone by blaahaj ~ 46.4k words ~ explicit: matthew goes to germany during the lockout… leon’s already there. these two figuring out their stuff in a foreign country *chef’s kiss*— a truly fantastic fic that i adore. the slow burn slow burns for sure.
6. Muscle Memory by blaahaj ~ 21.9k words ~ mature: i don’t even like most amnesia fics, but i love this one. memory loss on matthew’s side. this view of mattdrai is so cool while they learn to love each other again.
7. but please (don’t) bite by orphan_account ~ 52.7k words ~ mature: an alternate reality where leon and matthew were unprotected and thus drafted by the kraken. the slow burn sure slow burns (if i remember correctly). also features some cool cameos by one of the lomls: the wonderful braden holtby.
8. Nothing Good Happens After 2 A.M. by irrelevanttous ~ 11.9k words ~ mature: leon slips up and tells matthew he loves him. matthew does some thinking. cool take on how they got together.
9. The Day Leon Draisaitl Swore Never To Buy Another Apple Product Again by irrelevanttous ~ 9.3k words ~ explicit: mattdrai figuring their crap out kinda, lotsa spice. smexy with a plot??
10. the kids are alright by lighthousetowers ~ 55.8k words ~ mature: matthew is a preschool teacher, leon’s still an oiler, a meet-cute and adorable romance ensue! the characterization is so cool, as it dives deeper in than just “matthew’s a nuisance, leon’s serious and slightly moody” and shows the two of them in a relatively new light. an amazing and enjoyable read!! plus, this is one of my favorite authors!!
shorter fics (in no particular order):
1. i got a bad idea by canoodles ~ 5.5k words ~ explicit: from the 2020 all-star game onwards. as the author put it: leon accidentally fucks himself into a relationship with the enemy. those early mattdrai vibes when they were both still in alberta.
2. A Reunion, a Beginning, and the Thief of Awkward Silences by puckedup ~ 3.3k words ~ mature: leon misses matthew being in alberta. they play each other in florida and things happen. some chirping (flirting???) (it’s hard to tell with these two) and overall a fun story.
3. sweet like honey by indydriver ~ 3.6k words ~ teen and up: chirping, flirting, and the gray area that exists between those two things. fun and lighthearted.
4. retrograde by ohtempora ~ 1.5k words ~ mature: leon’s first time in matthew’s florida house. matthew is learning to adjust sorta kinda. the author describes it perfectly in their author’s note, about how florida’s weird vibes transferred to the fic itself. it’s so wonderfully written with a super consistent tone and a really interesting view into matthew transitioning from calgary to florida.
5. found arms to fall right into by orphan_account ~ 6.3k words ~ mature: just super fun, matthew and leon are sort of fake maybe-dating??? this fic also has perfect amounts of brady and davo. a really enjoyable story that i really really recommend.
6. Hourglass Theory by puckedup ~ 1.3k words ~ not rated: fluffy, soft, soft boys. aftermath of mitchy and chucky’s lil brawl and pietrangelo’s slash on leon.
7. Emergency Contact by blaahaj ~ 1.8k words ~ teen and up: funnyyyy, quick chick flick, just a fun little mattdrai moment, established mattdrai.
8. Privileged Information by blaahaj ~ 3k words ~ teen and up: sequel to Growing Into Someone. fun fluff and an enjoyable little snippet/add-on to the series.
9. what my heart just yearns to say by puckthisshift ~ 6.3k words ~ mature: as the author aptly puts it: idiots to lovers. matthew understands some german dirty talk, shenanigans ensue. a super fun, quick read.
10. cut by daisysusan ~ 2k words ~ teen and up: established relationship, the writing style is SO GOOD, matthew and leon’s chemistry is tangible, alternate 2023 playoffs, the two are just adorable with each other.
11. In Which Leon Recognizes Tkachuk in a Dick Pic and Has Some Explaining to Do (But Only to Himself) by irrelevanttous ~ 8.1k words ~ mature: oilers shenanigans, jealous drat, realizations, davo being the best bff, a fun fic.
12. Should’ve Given You a Reason to Stay by scruffylou ~ 1k words ~ not rated: super short, a bit emotional, aftermath of matthew signing with the cats.
13. portions for foxes by wheelsnipecellysboys ~ 5.2k words ~ explicit: the chemistry is so well-written— i love the two of them in this story. sexy times and also emotions. matthew in florida and the 2023 asg.
14. break the news (you’re walking out) by kiwilies ~ 1.5k words ~ teen and up: such a captivating writing style. perfectly showcases the tension of moving from a location you’ve known for years to somewhere brand new. such an interesting dynamic between leon and matthew, while at a bit more than 1k words, doesn’t dive extremely deep into their relationship. very enjoyable fic that has a lot of artistry implemented by the author. so so cool.

One thing that bothers me about Discovery is that it takes the grimmest possible view of Vulcan culture in general and Spock's family in particular, in ways that I don't think are justified by prior Star Trek series.
On the one hand, I think there's absolutely room in the Star Trek canon to portray a flawed, xenophobic Vulcan society. It's right there in front of you, starting in the original series. We all know that Spock grew up being bullied for being half human and not Vulcan enough. Dr. Miranda Jones is a human who studied on Vulcan and also has a complex about not being Vulcan enough (S3.E5 "Is there in Truth No Beauty?"). The inherent hypocrisy of Vulcans proclaiming that they value "infinite diversity in infinite combinations" while treating atypical members of their society poorly is absolutely worth exploring.
On the other hand, Discovery takes the portrayal of Vulcan callousness to the absolute extreme. Why on earth would Michael and her Vulcan classmates be contained in isolated orbs at school, practicing rapid-fire rote memorization? Vulcans aren't just computers who spit out facts and figures; that's a stereotype other species apply to them. Vulcans like to philosophize, to debate. Vulcans sincerely value the arts, music in particular. Spock even refers to dances that young Vulcans are taught in preschool (S3.E14 "Whom Gods Destroy"). None of those things are compatible with an education style that keeps kids isolated and interacting with no one, neither peers nor teachers.
Further, I don't for a second believe that Sarek would squash and deny Spock and Amanda their humanity. Yes, he has a complex about it and insists consistently that Spock is a Vulcan and must be treated as a Vulcan and yadda yadda yadda. BUT. Though he and Amanda choose to raise Spock on Vulcan ideals, Sarek is someone who clearly values human ways. He likes when Amanda and Perrin show him their human affection. He values human music, and is moved by it! And Spock, whose education was heavily influenced by Sarek, is fully versed in human history and literature. Often more so than the full, raised-on-Earth humans he serves with. He has read Byron and Shakespeare. He has detailed knowledge of wars, of governments, of even niche gunfights in the ancient American frontier (S3.E6 "Spectre of the Gun"). Sarek also relies without question on Spock's human friends to save his son's life, entrusting them with the most intimate of Vulcan rituals after assuming that Spock had already done the same. And their big father-son conflict? Sarek wants his son, of whom he is very proud, to contribute his talents to Vulcan society via the Vulcan Science Academy and stay close to home rather than going off into space and joining an organization with more military power than Sarek approves of. That's it.
All that is to say, there's no damn way that Sarek would "forbid" Amanda from exposing Spock to human literature and ideas. She would have read Alice in Wonderland to both her kids and he would have pretended not to be interested from another room while secretly being gripped by the story.

Ok i give up, here is the au i thought about in the post about my D&D character
So basically, its a ✨️Gods and Mortals✨️ kind of au (it also has nothing to do with my actual dnd character lmao)
At first i had a very different idea for this au tbh, but now i have a clearer view on where and how i want this to work
Eclipse is a preschool teacher and a daycare robot, his job is to care for the roudies children and take some weight off of the teacher's shoulders
One day, everything was normal, he gets his ass isekai'd into another world. Why? Because i say so
Jk he probably died somehow like in all isekai stories
To save him are the god of the stars, and the god of planets, those being Sun and Moon, who take a liking on this funny looking mortal and send him on an adventure with them as patrons
Sun and moon are two weirdos and being gods they do not really. Percieve. Eclipse as its own thinking being
This is not a plot point, actually, it's just to specify that Sun sees Eclipse as how you'd see a cute pet, while Moon as how you'd see a toddler of someone you barely know
They also have wildly different approaches when they talk with Eclipse, Sun does babyvoices at him, while Moon is the incarnation of the babysitter who tapes the baby to the wall and asks them if they want a beer
Sun is Eclipse's patron during the day and companion during the night, Moon is the other way around
Eclipse slowly loses his patience and gets progressively sassier and less keen to take shit from anyone he sees
Picture Gertrude from 'I Hate Fairyland', Eclipse is stuck in that world since months and has ho idea how to go back to his own, his "patrons" are not helping and anyone he meets is either a normal person or the worst weirdo he has ever run into
So he goes slowly from "ok now lets calm down and talk this out ok? We don't want anyone getting hurt ^^" to "i cast fuck you and your family!"
This is a sandbox au, so there is no real story, just some beasts to put in situations
If you want to know what they look like, Eclipse is the same eclipse from my 'sun and moonless' au/fic
Sun and Moon on the other hand appear as these titanic and imposing beings when they are in their real form, and as regular sun and moon when they take the 'shape of eclipse' (as they call it)
Sun wears a white tunic and a red scarf both as a god and as a "mortal", in his god form the tunic fades into clouds! his head is a half sphere and from behind rays and light come out, it looks like he is wearing a floating crown but you can't really tell because he is too bright. Also je probably has like, a few tens of eyes, but uses only between 2 and 5 at the same time usually
Moon on the other hand does not even have a real head as a god! His head is a clpud of space dust and darkness with a thousand stars inside, you can also see the moon where his head would be, and it always shows the same side no matter where you look at him from (it also shows the current lunar phase); he has eyes tho!
Moon wears a dark cape, and the cloud from his head forms a train behind him that looks like a night sky (similar to a nun's headwear in appearence)
When i draw anything good for this au i will post it because i keep imagining it with walt disney old comic books artstyle but I CAN'T REPLICATE IT

I just. Need to get this out of my head. We all see Hob as a university level teacher but what if he wasn't? What if he was an elementary, or even kindergarten/preschool, teacher. He didn't exactly plan to become an Offical Wrangler of 20 Human equivalent of cats, but it lets him showcase his random knowledge and get even more excited about seeing the future.
Get it outta your head, put it into mine, yes, this is the meta I welcome and adore!!! I think my views on Hob tend to run a little bit sharper and darker than the average fandom take. I've never seen him as someone whose chief trait is hope, yanno? It's hunger for me! Never thought, oh yeah, that is a labrador retriever in human form. I have never associated him with a little classroom that has posters about weather and seasons and a map of the world.
And YET. After getting this ask and thinking about it. I am fucking sold and now I will sell you all too. He would be a brilliant teacher of younger kids. Because I don't think you need to be sunny or kind or friendly to be a good teacher of small children. It’s nice. But I do believe you have to be curious. And sensitive. And patient. And those are some of the traits that characterize Hob to me.
He knows more of the variations of life than can be earned in a mortal lifetime alone. He knows loneliness. He knows losing family. He knows poverty. He knows about moving and leaving what feels like your whole life behind you, when you never wanted to go. He would inherently understand why it's better to talk about 'grownups at home' than 'parents', and why you shouldn't make kids share with the class what they did on their summer vacation.
He is always curious - not just of the world in a way that allows him to passionately transmit that knowledge to his classes like you say OP - but also of his kids. About their dreams and hopes and fears. About how childhood has changed so much. He loves the small stuff. He wants to hear it all. A class of 20 enthusiastic kids might be like herding cats, but it’s also 20 entire lives, mornings and nights and houses and siblings and pets and chaos and weird kid observations and beliefs, and it sates Hob’s bottomless hunger for the human experience far more than a lecture hall filled with a bunch of young adults who are only there three hours a week, whose extent of conversation with him is usually limited to emails asking for paper extensions that he grants each and every time.
He also has this insane sensitivity that you see even in 1389 in the way he pulls back earnestness with humour to match the mood of the room. He is always watching, always feeling, always adjusting. Think of all the little expressions of expectation and irritation and hurt and hope when talking with Dream! I have no doubt he’d ensure each of his students felt seen and understood, even if it's hard at first. Even if it takes a long time to get there. It’s taken him a long time, after all. He is this exquisitely tuned instrument to talk carefully to kids, and to give them back tenfold the sort of validation that a part of him always howled for in those early meetings.
He's good at being earnest. He's good at big feelings. He's good at being funny. He's good at noticing. He's good at these things, in large part, because he's not normal at all.
He’s also as stubborn as a child, but as frighteningly patient as, well, an immortal. It’s probably uncanny to his colleagues. They tell Hob he’s got the patience of a saint, and he thinks, privately, More like the faith of a martyr. But he does. He’s got both.
I think he doesn't get it all right at first. But I think within ten years he’s got so many teaching awards he needs to put up a special shelf for them. Below it, though, are several shelves, already full to bursting, with letters and thank-yous and birthday cards and ‘look at me now’ life updates from former students. Because that is the kind of teacher Hob wants to be.

request: hiii! could you do a dad!auston matthews and his daughter coming home from school with a bunch of valentines from classmates and her asking him who's his valentine
Be My Valentine- Auston Matthews
Tumblr media
warnings: none just fluff
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
I was sitting in the parent pick up line at Hannah's school. I saw rush out to the car with a plastic bag with hearts on it. One of the teachers helped her get into the backseat of my car. She buckled herself in and they closed the door. I started to drive off from her school exiting the lot.
"How was school honey?" I asked her while turning on the soundtrack from frozen we had on cd. It's her favorite movie. The volume was on low so I could hear her talk.
"I got valentine today!" She exclaimed at me. Hannah was only four. Just learning how to talk right. Today was valentines day and some class mates of hers brought in valentines to share. She brought some in herself. Hannah was so excited to get them. She was in preschool so this was her first time getting this from her classmates.
"Oh you did!" I was sounding amused. It was so cute to listen to her talk about her day or anything in general.
"I got won from evewry won!" She held up her bag with red hearts all over it. I looked through the rear view mirror. It was filled with those cute valentine cards and candy.
"That's a lot Hannah!" I looked forward and kept driving back to the house we had.
"I wanna show daddy alllll of my candy from my frwiends!" She kicked her feet in the air a little bit. It put a smile on my face to see her so happy.
"Ohhh! Well we are almost home so you can show him." I told her as I turned onto our street.
The last five minutes of our drive was singing let it go from frozen. Karoke car rides are the best with her.
As soon as I pulled into the driveway I parked in the spirt right next to Auston's car and turned it off before getting out and opening her door. I undid her seat belt and picked her out of seat placing her on the ground. Grabbing her backpack and her bag.
When I gave it to her she immediately bolted towards the front door but she couldn't reach it. She had to wait for me to open it for her. I closed her door then locked the door. Made my way to the front door to open it for her.
"Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" She screamed as she ran through the door and the hallway. Running into his arms. Had the big full bag of valentines in her right hand.
"Hi sweetheart! What's the bag for?" He said while resting a side one side of her one his hips. Supporting her up with his hands.
"My frwiends gave me valentine!" She exclaimed while showing him her red heart bag.
"Oh really!" He asks her. She shakes her head up and down. That puts a smile on his face. Puts one on mine when I walked down the ways to see it.
"Who yowr valentine!" She asks him.
"Well who do you think it should be?" He asks her. I walked into the kitchen not too far from where they were standing to make Hannah her afterschool snack. Apples with peanut butter like always.
"Her!" She whispers very loudly and points to me. I could hear her whispering but I was pretending I couldn't.
"Mommy?" He asks her while also whispering very loudly. She shakes her head up and down meaning yes. I was trying so hard not to laugh. I smiled to myself.
He puts Hannah down on the ground and walks up to me. I was cutting apples when he came up to me and I turned around to him.
"Hey?" I put on my best show face for this one.
"Hello. I was wondering. Will you be my valentine?" He asked me. I could see the laughter hiding behind his face.
"Of course I will!" I said while pulling him for a hug but before hugging him I kiss him on the lips real quick then hugging him.
"Ewwwww!" Hannah squealed seeing us kiss. She made a soured face at us. After we pulled away from a hug I laughed at her.
"Oh I didn't forget about you!" I said while walking over to her and giving her a kiss on the forehead.
I pulled away from her and she grabbed her bag of candy and started to eat one and both Auston and I had a smile on our faces.
He sat down next to Hannah and ate some candy with her. So nice of her to share. He proceeded to grab one and then offer it to me.
"For you, my valentine." He had a soft smile on his face.
"Why thank you." I accepted his kind offer and smiled back at him while unwrapping the candy.

The first video Rachel Griffin-Accurso uploaded to YouTube is so bare-bones, it looks like she’s being held hostage and forced to croon children’s tunes.
It was an experiment, through and through. “I ordered a green screen from Amazon and Googled ‘how to use a green screen with iMovie,’” Griffin-Accurso says of recording that first clip. She was a preschool teacher, not a content creator; she used a camera she found in her house, recording herself by setting the camera on a pile of books so it’d be at the right height. The results are … fine. She stands in front of a chintzy-looking cartoon sea floor in a red shirt and thick headband, singing a ditty a cappella. (“One little blue fish, swimming in the water …”) The two-minute video ends with her waving to the camera, then cuts to a generic graphic asking people to like and subscribe.
It feels slanderous to write about this clip’s shortcomings now, because Rachel Griffin-Accurso is (probably by my estimation, and definitely by my 1-year-old son’s estimation) the finest entertainer for young children working today.
Since uploading that first video in February 2019, she’s gone from a New York–based educator dabbling in digital content to Ms. Rachel, toddler-whisperer extraordinaire, with millions of devoted followers. Her YouTube show, originally called Songs for Littles but recently renamed Ms. Rachel, is an interactive, thoughtful addition to the children’s canon; it now has a cast of merry singing adults, live instrumentals, and puppets, too. It has a modern-day, DIY Sesame Street vibe, with an emphasis on language development that has converted speech therapists into ardent boosters. Linger long enough outside a daycare, and you’ll spot a mom wearing a “Running on Ms. Rachel and Iced Coffee” T-shirt.
Griffin-Accurso’s rise wouldn’t have happened in a different children’s media landscape. She started recording videos because she’d gone looking for language-development-focused programming for her young son, who had a speech delay, and didn’t find what she wanted. “He’s such a visual learner,” she says. “I just thought it would really help him.”
She didn’t know anyone in the television industry, or even how one would go about pitching a series. “I felt like I had a strong show,” she says. “But I didn’t have connections.”
She didn’t even really have a staff or a fleshed-out project, instead learning as she went. Her husband, Aron Accurso, turned into a castmate; a composer and musical director with Broadway experience, he also oversees the show’s music, helps with editing, and moonlights as a puppeteer. Singer-songwriter Jules Hoffman, now another cast mainstay, got the gig initially by answering an online ad in 2019. “I literally opened up Craigslist, I typed in ‘children’s music,’ I saw Rachel’s ad—no pictures, one sentence,” they remember. “Then we met up and hit it off.” While traditional children’s television development can be a years-long process from idea to execution, Ms. Rachel grew into itself publicly, one uploaded video at a time.
Accurso-Griffith is now making inroads in more traditional children’s media. But the way her story started is representative of a sea change happening in the world of kid’s entertainment: YouTube is the nucleus.
The YouTube Era of children’s programming represents a marked shift in what and how young kids watch video. For decades, children’s television was appointment viewing on a handful of broadcast networks. The UK and Canada had kids' programming on BBC and CBC, respectively. In the US, Saturday morning cartoons were king, while PBS set a gold standard for educational fare with long-running hits like Sesame Street. In the 1980s, the rise of cable led to the creation of several kid-specific channels, most famously Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel.
The rise of streamers and “peak TV” led to a corresponding flood of children’s content, which is a major draw for audiences. How major? Over a third of the shows most in-demand on Disney+ are children’s programming, according to Parrot Analytics. Some of these Disney hits are in-house titles like DuckTales; others are licensed, like the truly delightful Australian cartoon Bluey.
Children’s programming also thrives on less kid-focused streamers. More than 18 percent of Amazon Prime Video’s demand is for kid’s television—in part thanks to the streamer’s catalog of children’s content that originated on YouTube—and more than 17 percent of demand on Paramount+ is for kid’s television, likely because of its library of Nickelodeon shows. Parrot Analytics measures demand for children’s programming at just above 15 percent for both Max and Netflix, a testament to how those streamers have also developed their kid’s entertainment sections. (Max now owns the rights to Sesame Street, for example.)
While the streamers have been jostling for dominance, though, YouTube has surpassed them all. “Time spent with YouTube is even higher than it is with streaming content,” says Nancy Jennings, a professor at the University of Cincinnati and director of the school’s Children’s Education and Entertainment Research Lab. “YouTube has really taken over the space.”
YouTube’s rise is tied to a number of factors. First, there’s how accessible it is. (Free!) Then there’s the sheer volume of video available. “Nothing can really touch it,” says Katie Bailey, editor of the children’s entertainment trade publication Kidscreen. (Trailing far behind in second place, in her estimation? “Netflix.”) It also offers unrivaled variety. Does your kid want to watch hundreds of hours of videos of garbage trucks? What about hundreds of hours of other children opening toys, or playing video games, or reciting Shakespeare, or participating in elaborate pranks, or touching slime? Hand them a tablet or smartphone. And when whatever your child has chosen has finished playing, YouTube’s algorithm has something else ready in the queue.
The audience sizes for kids content on YouTube are staggering. Songs for Littles as a channel has more than 2.7 billion views. Its subscriber count sits just above 4.7 million. The channel for the BBC's popular Hey Duggee has some 2.5 billion views and more than 1.7 million subscribers. But those look Lilliputian compared to the behemoth that is Cocomelon, YouTube’s most popular children’s program within the United States, and its second-most popular channel overall. Cocomelon has more than 162 billion views and 161 million subscribers.
Cocomelon’s success story is far weirder than Ms. Rachel. The brand started as a YouTube channel launched way back in 2006, specializing in alphabet videos for toddlers; it was created by former filmmaker Jay Jeon as a hobby. (He has two kids.) As it gained an audience, the channel expanded into nursery rhyme animations, went through a few name changes, and eventually rebranded as Cocomelon in 2018. By the time it was sold to a British media startup called Moonbug in 2020, it was an unprecedented juggernaut.
Moonbug’s existence is a case study on the centrality of YouTube to the kid’s entertainment world. The company has grown by acquiring already-popular YouTube channels and making them obscenely popular multi-platform brands. (In addition to Cocomelon, it also owns Blippi and Little Baby Bum.) A year after it landed Cocomelon, Moonbug itself was sold for a reported $3 billion to a Los Angeles–based entertainment startup called Candle Media, which was founded by a former Disney and TikTok executive and is backed by the private equity firm Blackstone.
After Moonbug got on the scene, Cocomelon and its other hits went from being YouTube sensations to simply ubiquitous. Starting in 2020, Cocomelon jumped over to Netflix, where it has remained one of the most-watched children’s titles globally ever since. And that was just the beginning. “Our content is on 180 platforms around the world,” Moonbug’s managing director Andy Yeatman says. In addition to all the major US streamers, Cocomelon and other Moonbug shows appear on international broadcasters like the BBC, Germany’s SuperRTL, Brazil’s Globo, as well as Chinese streaming platforms owned by ByteDance and iQIYI.
When Moonbug started attempting to strike deals with more traditional media companies, they struggled to convey exactly how big the properties they owned already were. “In the first couple years, it was definitely a hurdle to get them to take us seriously,” Yeatman says. “It was, Oh, it’s just YouTube content. But we don’t get that anymore.”
Now, streamers vie for said YouTube content. Moonbug has struck deals to create exclusive spin-off programs based on its preexisting shows for several major platforms. An offshoot of its property My Magic Pet Morphle will debut on Disney+ next year.
Meanwhile, both streamers and traditional broadcast and cable channels are now creating their own content specifically for YouTube. “They’ve moved to embrace the platform,” YouTube’s head of family partnerships Lauren Glaubach says. Disney, for example, has put whole episodes of its new animated show Star Wars Young Jedi on the platform, a move Glaubach sees as expanding its audience. “You look at these full-length episodes on YouTube and there are over 34 million views in total.”
Part of the great appeal of YouTube is that anyone can upload a video to the platform. It’s also the great problem of YouTube: Moderating the world’s largest repository of user-generated video is impossible to do flawlessly. And while Disney is finding additional audiences from using YouTube, it was also at the center of one of the platform’s biggest scandals: Elsagate.
In 2015, YouTube launched an app especially for children, YouTube Kids. It was meant to curate high-quality, child-appropriate videos. And it did, mostly. But bad actors sought to piggyback on the demand for actual kid’s programming with low-quality, hastily-made videos that often included disturbing storylines and imagery. Some of these videos took beloved cartoon characters and created knock-off content with decidedly freaky, unsettling plotlines. (Sample title: “PAW Patrol Babies Pretend to Die Suicide by Annabelle Hypnotized.”) The character Elsa from Disney’s megahit Frozen was a frequently-bootlegged character, so people following the scandal ended up nicknaming it after her.
YouTube conducted a massive purge of the offending videos and channels after the Elsagate controversy; in the years since, its moderation efforts appear to have paid off. (I recently spent several hours trying to find inappropriate content on YouTube Kids; I found some mildly puerile fart videos, but nothing truly disturbing.) Josh Cohen, the founder of creator-economy news website TubeFilter, has followed YouTube’s approach to kids content since the beginning, and believes the platform was “whipped into shape” by the backlash. “It’s a testament to YouTube responding to criticisms,” he says.
Still, to this day, not every parent feels comfortable plopping their kid down with a tablet and YouTube, and that’s one of the ways some of the original children’s television purveyors continue to thrive. PBS, for example, may have far more competition than it did when Sesame Street launched, but it’s managed to carve out a successful lane for itself, in part by adapting early to the digital-video space and preserving its quality-first reputation.
PBS launched its own digital video player back in 2007. “YouTube already existed at that point and we had been watching it carefully, but we just didn’t feel like it was a safe place for us right out of the gate. But because a lot of kids were on it, we were like, OK, we’ll launch our own player,” Sara DeWitt, the senior vice president and general manager of PBS Kids, says.
PBS did embrace YouTube eventually, though. When YouTube Kids launched, DeWitt says PBS worked to be one of the app’s “anchor tenants,” in part because it wanted to be on the platforms where its target audience already spent time.
For that reason, the public broadcaster has also been on the forefront of another shift. For well over a decade now, PBS Kids has considered gaming as an essential component of its programming. “We made the decision in the early 2000s that our shows were going to be multi-platform. Meaning, it would be shows and games. When you pitched to PBS kids, you really tried to come with a world, because we weren’t launching any shows without a gaming element as well,” DeWitt says.
This melding together of children’s television and children’s gaming is only accelerating. David Kleeman, a senior vice president at the game development studio Dubit, has studied children’s entertainment for decades (he’s the former president of the American Center for Children and Media) and he’s tracking how these two worlds are colliding.
Kleeman has already seen children enthusiastically watching video content within gaming platforms, and believes this type of screen time will be increasingly commonplace in the future.
In 2022, the anime-adventure series Bakugan Battle Planet launched a blended experience where kids playing on Roblox could stream episodes of the series within the gaming platform. Kleeman tested what it was like to watch within Roblox; he navigated his avatar over to a screen, where other people had done the same, creating a virtual screening room. “There were all kinds of other avatars, bouncing and running around,” he says. “It felt like I wasn’t watching TV alone.”
Other industry experts suspect gaming will have an even more prominent role in children’s entertainment in the future. Libby Hunt, the research manager at Boston Children’s Hospital’s Digital Wellness Lab, sees the trend toward more immersive, interactive digital entertainment as already underway. “The popularity of online environments like Minecraft or Roblox really encapsulates this shift,” she says. Hunt predicts even more “blending” of gaming and television in the future for young kids. (This is a trend that is even further along with older kids, who frequent apps like Twitch to watch gaming streams.)
In addition to television shows cropping up within gaming platforms, gaming content is already widespread on television and streaming video, and there’s no sign of that abating. Recently, Amazon’s Freevee platform announced a deal to create channels devoted to Minecraft and Roblox gameplay and tutorials, a category of video already prevalent on YouTube.
The category of “children’s television” has existed for nearly as long as television has, but it is an increasingly leaky category. As spending time on online platforms like YouTube and Roblox supplants sitting in front of an old-fashioned television set, the very idea of “kids tv” becomes as antiquated as Saturday morning cartoons.
Still, some things stay constant. “What really fascinates me is that for all the contextual changes of how we watch, how we play, how we do all those things—child development doesn’t change,” Kleeman says. Kids will always pay attention to a captivating show—whether or not it’s on television is besides the point.

I've been working on a story on wattpad called his Prayer. It is a Taiju Shiba x reader fan fiction. Since I couldn't get many views on wattpad, I decided I'd post the first chapter here! If people like it, I'll post more.
Enjoy!
All I could hear was the insitent beep of an alarm. It blared through the house and into my room.
"Luna!" I yelled and almost groaned. "It's time for school, just turn the dang alarm off, please!"
I covered my head with the pillow and let out an agitated sob.
The beeping finally stopped, and I sighed, opening my eyes only to see little Mana sleeping next to me.
Another nightmare, I assume.
Getting up, I threw on my uniform, I could care less for the wrinkles and for the disheveled look of it.
I ran into the bathroom and pulled up my hair. There was no way I was going with my hair looking like a rats nest.
"Y/n!" I heard my brother Takashi yell from the other room.
"What!" I yelled back.
No answer.
Classic mom move, Takashi.
I run out of the bathroom and see him and his friend, Hakkai, standing in the living room.
"We gotta go, We are gonna be late."
He simply stated. I looked at him before the two girls popped out from behind him.
"Sounds great. I assume I'm riding with Hakkai again?"
Mitsuya nodded, and they left the house. Hakkai didn't say a word to me and only blushed.
(No, it's not a ship. We just know how he is with women, lmao)
I hopped on his motorcycle behind him and held onto his shoulders.
Today was just going to be a long day.
Sitting in Algebra had to be one of the worst 50 minutes of my life.
Why couldn't math just figure out its own X? Beats me.
"Ms. Mitsuya?" My teacher called out to me.
I jumped in my seat and looked up.
"Yes, Sensei?" I inquired and looked at her a little scared.
"Care to tell the class what 2(5+6) +3(9-2)=X is?"
I gulped and went up to the board, working out the equation.
I've never been the best at math, I only knew how to get myself by.
Exhaling I finished the problem and looked at my teacher.
"X would be equal to 33, sensei."
She gave a nod of approval. Just then, the bell rang for us to be out of school for the day.
I went to the front doors. Takashi had told me that both him and Hakkai had gang business, so I would have to manage picking up Luna and Mana.
I began my trek towards Luna and Mana's school.
I stood at the front entry way of the school, and when Luna and Mana came running out in hugged me, I couldn't help but smile.
Luna and Mana were always there. They always held me when I'm sad and I reciprocated the gesture.
"Y/n! We missed you!" Luna said, jumping up and hugging my torso.
Mana nodded. She was still only in a daycare/preschool place. She wasn't amazingly talkative, but she was one smart cookie.
I picked Mana up and put her on my back. I used my other hand to hold Luna's.
As we began the journey home. It was a long walk, about a mile or so. We ended up stopping for ice cream, then continuing.
After finishing her ice cream, Mana fell asleep on my back. I sighed and felt a little sleepy myself.
As we walked up to the house, mom's car was still gone.
She's probably still at work.
I walked in and laid Mana down it was late after all.
Luna also said she was going to bed, but I had other plans.
Homework.
I couldn't skip out on it, or Mitsuya would kick my butt, and mom would have some words for me.
It was getting late, probably about 10 pm, and Takashi still wasn't home.
I wanted to wait for him and tell him goodnight, but it looks like that may not be on the agenda.
I heated him up some ramen and ended up crashing on the couch after putting my homework away.
It must have been hours later that I felt someone pick me up and carry me into my room. Opening my eyes, I noticed it was Takashi.
He had a small bruise on the side of his face, and his knuckles seemed bloody.
"Takashi?" I asked gently.
"Go back to sleep Y/n, it's late, and you seemed uncomfortable."
He said and set me down, but before he could go, I grabbed his wrist.
"Sit down idiot. How many times do I tell you I won't be mad as long as you let me help fix you up."
I basically forced him to sit as I got the first aid kit and walked into back over to him.
Turning on my lamp, I was fully able to assess the damage. Signing, I looked at him.
"Please don't be so reckless, Taka-chan. You always get hurt like this."
I began to dab at the wounds with alcohol pads. Takashi didn't wince or even flinch. He was used to it.
Bandaging up his beaten and bruised hands I looked at his face.
"Who was it?" I asked sternly but gently poked at it.
He hissed this time and grabbed my hand.
"Don't worry about it, and could you not, I love you y/n but it hurts like a bitch." He responded.
I only nodded and let him leave my room.
Curling up into a ball on my mattress was an amazing idea, and so I did.
I let out an exhausted sigh and closed my eyes.
I couldn't believe that all of this was now currently my responsibility.

Since baby boy is so shy do Auston and Carson ever worry about him making friends in preschool or does he have trouble leaving his parents for school
The thought definitely crosses their minds about Carter struggling to make friends and stuff for sure. And they’re not quite sure how to approach that either so they just try to stay super mindful like Carter isn’t broken, he doesn’t need to be fixed and they don’t want him to feel differently just because he’s shy. Carson and Auston do talk about it though just so they can figure out ways to help if they can. And so they try to socialize him with other kids before he starts going to school. Daycare is really helpful in socializing Mia with other kids that aren’t leafs kids and so they want to try that with Carter but again it’s just different. He does have trouble leaving them at first but instead of just kinda dropping him off and leaving, Carson and Auston talk to the daycare workers about what they recommend and so they end up being super gradual about it. They go with him to meet his teacher, to see his room, to check out some of the toys and the best part is there’s other parents doing this with their kids too. It’s not just them so Carter doesn’t feel outcasted in any way. All of the parents do this a couple of times and then Carter eventually makes a friend and is just happy to be there and so when Carson and Auston do go to leave, he’s fine. Another thing they do too is just practice social skills with him at home. Like one thing all of his teachers say to Carson is Auston is how polite and well mannered he is and that’s because Carson and Auston taught him those social skills at home where he was comfortable and before he started going to school. They also make sure he knows that his being shy is unique in his own way. Like if he wants to sit in the corner and read a book instead of kicking around a ball with others sometimes that’s ok. Carter loves reading and will always tell his parents about the stories he reads and that doesn’t go away. Carter does make friends and they’re fully accepting of him being the quieter one, that doesn’t change them viewing him as their friend. Like even when he’s older and in high school (I know I mentioned this the other night but) I actually imagine him being quite popular and it’s because just so likeable and gets along with everyone. However, he is still shy. It takes time for him to fully trust people he doesn’t know but he just treats everyone with kindness. He’s still quiet and keeps to himself, which given that he is fairly popular and known around school, may come across as intimidating to those who don’t know him but once that exterior shell is cracked he’s just the sweetest and the biggest softy

i wanna know more abt the yellow one in your human au
yellow is about the same personality wise! still the sweet people pleasing esfj as always, if a bit louder and somewhat less sensitive than in canon (he’s not afraid all the time in the au 😭)
roy was always neglectful in a way that yellow viewed him more as a friend than a father (see this @undervaluedagent post which was a huge influence on this au) so he wasn’t too broken up about being separated from him, it was more like having a neighbor move away than losing a father. lesley and roy also separated shortly after yellow was born and he has even less contact with her
i aged him down to 5 because while i view him as older in canon i wanted to put him in preschool, as when i was in preschool i had several teachers who were super weird and i wanted the teachers from the show to be just regular if super weird preschool teachers 😭 so yellow goes to school every day experiences the five stages of grief and then goes home <3

Gilbert Revisits the Diary
~~~~
The video starts once again, this time Gilbert is eleven years old. His hair is longer and he’s wearing a school uniform shirt, a navy blue polo long sleeved one. He smiles at the camera. “Hi.” He sits back in his chair.
“I found my old video journal from the school assignment and thought it would be fun to do another,” he explains, “I don’t really know what to talk about though.” He leans with his head resting on top of his hands on his desk.
“Ludwig, my little brother, is doing good,” Gilbert smiles. “He just turned five!” He holds up a picture of himself and Ludwig. “He likes preschool and he has a few friends. He’s so serious! And Grandfather still won’t let us go birdwatching! I told him that I’ll keep Lutz safe because I’m an awesome older brother, but he says that we aren’t old enough.”
He sighs and sets the photograph down, he leans back in his chair. “I’m doing well in school, I have a few friends too! Erzsébet’s fun! He likes to play knights with me because he’s awesome too! He also listens and knows that my name’s actually Gilbert and not that other one that everyone else uses!” Gilbert grins, “I like having a friend.”
The young boy grabs a hair tie and pulls his longer hair back into a ponytail to get it off his shoulders, “there’s still a lot of people that I don’t like very much though. Like Ivan, he’s weird. Tolys is nice but he doesn’t like me very much because he says I’m too loud,” he frowns. “I can’t wait until there’s more people in my class because everyone in mine right now is kind of a loser except for Erzsébet. And Mathias. He’s pretty awesome too. He’s always hanging out with Lukas though and Lukas is no fun to be around.”
Gilbert leans forward again and stares into the camera, “the camera’s nice to talk to though. Grandfather still buys me journals, but I like this too! It’s like talking to people but it doesn’t make weird faces or make fun of you like people do!”
After a second he moves away from the camera and sits back down, “I’m still trying to convince Grandfather to let me get a bird. I think I want a canary. He says that I’m not old enough for a bird though, which is lame!”
He frowns and runs his fingers through his ponytail, “life is pretty awesome though. I think when Lutz gets older I’m going to convince him to keep a journal because they’re really nice and helpful. I write the details of every single day in it! Which makes me productive I think.” Gilbert smiles, “Grandfather also said that we might go to the bookstore later this week. Which is good because I really want to see if there’s a new book by my favorite author and also see if I can get another fairytale book for me to read to Lutz. His favorite story is Rapunzel because he likes how the prince and Rapunzel find each other again at the end. I like it because it magically heals the prince’s eyes at the end. My teacher told Grandfather that I might have to get glasses because I can’t read the board very well. I don’t want glasses though because I’ll look like an un-awesome nerd. I want to get contacts because you can get them in different colors and then maybe I can get some blue or brown ones so my eyes don’t look weird.”
He takes his hands out of his hair and glances at something out of the camera’s view and sighs, “it’s getting kinda late. I think I’ll try to make these more often though! Uh, how do I end these? Like a letter? Sincerely, Gilbert Beilschmidt!” He smiles again at the camera before turning it off.
First Day of School
It’s time for Faith’s first day of preschool. Mulder is having some worries, but Scully hopes to calm them, while also having some of her own.
Hard to believe I’ve been writing this little family series for four years now. I never would have guessed it would have happened, but I absolutely love it. It’s my favorite by far and always leaves me happy and smiling as I write.
I hope you enjoy this next little look into their lives. ❤️
#52 in The Family Life Series
Tumblr media
September 12, 2022
Scully took a deep breath and closed her eyes, the scent of the preschool classroom achingly familiar. Thoughts of classes, questions asked, books read and lessons learned filled her head and she smiled.
How do all schools smell the same? she wondered. It has to be a cleaning chemical or something. Like the new car smell, schools have something that’s similar.
“Mommy,” Faith said and Scully opened her eyes and looked down.
“Yes, love?”
“Can I play with the kitchen?” She pointed across the room and Scully nodded with a smile.
“Anything you want, honey. Go and play.”
Faith grinned and hurried over to the kitchen area where two other children were already playing. Scully sighed happily as she watched her and then she heard a louder sigh beside her, one that was not so happy. She turned and looked at Mulder, his shoulders drooping as he watched Faith.
“Hey,” she said softly and he looked at her with sad eyes. She exhaled a quiet laugh and reached for his hand. “It’s just a few hours.”
“Twice a week,” he said, his voice low. She smiled and squeezed his fingers as he sighed again. “What am I supposed to do while she’s here?”
“Mulder,” she said, laughing slightly louder this time, and letting go of his hand to wrap her arm around his waist and give him a quick hug. “You’re going to be just fine.”
“Disagree,” he mumbled as she stepped back, smiling at him before looking back at Faith.
A little boy was handing her a plate of wooden food and she laughed as she pretended to take a bite and then gave the plate back to him. He smiled at her and she picked up the empty coffee pot and poured it into a cup, taking a big pretend drink and then saying “ahhhh” as she set the cup down.
“This is good for her,” Scully said quietly and he growled softly.
“I know it is. And I know she needs to go to school. But, I’ll miss her so much.”
“So will I,” she said and she saw him shake his head out of the corner of her eye.
“It’s not the same,” he whispered and she stared at him, her eyes wide.
“How do you-”
“Hello, hello!” the principal called, clapping her hands to get everyone’s attention and pausing their conversation. She was an older woman with caramel colored skin, silver gray hair in long braids wrapped up in an elaborate bun, a wide, happy smile, and kind brown eyes. “Welcome everyone to the first day of school! We’re so happy to have you here.”
The teachers clapped as they stood beside the principal and the parents clapped too, Mulder doing so with a heavy sigh.
“I’m Mrs. Cohver, and you’ve met the teachers: Mrs. Tanner, Miss Esma, Miss Cole, and Miss Rogers. They will all be sharing this room, the children at different quadrants with their assigned teacher. Today is an informal time to get to know the classroom as well as the teacher. Normally by now, we would have the children here on the rainbow circle rug for check-in and the welcome song, but today we’re keeping it more lax.”
Scully nodded and smiled at Faith’s teacher, Miss Cole, who beamed back at her. They had met her last week when they came to show Faith around and view the classroom. She was incredibly kind and Faith had taken to her right away, asking lots of questions as she looked around and telling her about her dog and cat at home and Jacob and Liz Beth, her twins. Miss Cole had raised curious eyes to Scully and Mulder, who then explained about Skinner, Rachel, and the twins.
“Raycho had two babies,” Faith had said, holding up two fingers. “I love them so much.”
“I’m sure you do,” Miss Cole had said. “Babies are wonderful, aren’t they?”
“Yes. They are,” Faith had said matter-of-factly as she picked up an old telephone and began to play with it.
It had been a good first meeting and Faith had talked of nothing but the classroom and the fun she’d had for the rest of the day.
“So,” Mrs. Cohver continued. “For the first half hour, parents are welcome to stay and then after that, there is a luncheon set up near the multipurpose room. You are all encouraged to eat and stick around as the first day can be a little daunting to some, especially after their grown up leaves.”
“God,” Mulder breathed and Scully took his hand in hers, giving it a gentle squeeze.
“We will be beginning our day now, if you wish to stay, please be mostly silent observers, unless your child is in dire need of assistance. Thank you and welcome to the first day of preschool.”
Everyone clapped again, Scully letting go of Mulder’s hand to do so. The teachers began to round up the children and then they all sat on the large rug according to class. Faith glanced around and smiled at Mulder and Scully, giving them a wave before turning back to Mrs. Cohver, who was welcoming them to school.
“Oh,” Scully said softly, a catch in her chest causing her to turn around and take a second to stop the tears suddenly stinging her eyes.
The kids echoed back what Mrs. Cohver had said, as Scully distracted herself by looking at the laminated pictures of the alphabet on the wall.
A is for anteater
B is for baby
C is for color
D is for dream
“You okay?” Mulder whispered, his hand on her back. She nodded, not able to speak at the moment. “No, you’re not. This sucks.”
At that, she laughed quietly and nodded, wiping at her eyes.
“It’s necessary.”
“Doesn’t make it hurt less.”
“Mulder…” she said, looking at him and then back at Faith who sat in rapt attention as a story was being read. “Look at her.”
He looked back too as she smiled broadly and nodded her head, pointing her finger at the book.
“We did that,” Scully whispered. “Made her the person she is by loving her and taking care of her. She’s-”
“Stop,” he whispered back, shaking his head. “I’m barely holding it together as it is and that’s not helping.”
“Oh, honey.” She clasped his hand and they both sighed as they watched Faith laughing and looking at the other children around her.
She took a second look when she seemed to realize they were still there and waved to them again.
“It’s a story about a butterfly and a spider,” she called to them. “I like it.”
“Good,” Mulder called back as the adults in the room chuckled softly and he squeezed Scully’s hand. Faith smiled and looked back at the book.
A few minutes more, and they said goodbye as Mrs. Cohver told the children their parents would be outside for a little while. Faith hugged them both and then ran back to the activity table already laid with paper and paint that would be used. She sat down and reached for a paintbrush, dipping it into the light blue paint and placing it on the paper.
“Come on,” Scully said, pulling gently at Mulder’s hand. He sighed with a nod and they walked out of the classroom and into the warm early afternoon sunshine.
The door closed behind the group of parents and they all looked at one another, one of the mothers pointing to the luncheon that had been set up under canopies near the multipurpose room. Everyone started walking toward it, talking to each other, but Mulder lingered at the door.
“Mulder?” Scully asked with a soft smile.
“Just a couple of minutes,” he said, his eyes on the ground and hands in his jeans pockets. “Just in case.”
“Okay, hon,” she said, nodding in understanding.
“What if…” He sighed and looked at the door before looking at Scully. “I just want to stay close for a few minutes. I don’t want her to wait if she needs us.”
“Mulder,” Scully said, stepping closer to him, and wrapping her arms around his waist. She exhaled and then inhaled, closing her eyes as he put his arms around her.
“It’s such a big change,” he whispered and she nodded against his chest. “I know it’s been coming, but now that it’s here, I don’t want it to be.”
“I know,” she whispered back and he sighed heavily.
“She’s just a baby.”
“She’s almost four,” she reminded him and he grunted.
“I know, but she’s also a baby. My baby. God, I hate this,” he said and she smiled, holding him tighter.
The door opened and laughter and excited voices could be heard. Scully pulled back and looked at Mrs. Cohver as she walked out and shut the door behind her.
“Hello! Everything okay?” she asked, tilting her head and smiling kindly at them.
“Yes. We’re good,” Scully said with a smile.
“First day jitters? All the parents get them,” she said with a wink. “You’re… Faith’s parents, right?”
“Yeah. Is she okay?” Mulder asked, concern in his voice, and Mrs. Cohver laughed softly.
“She’s absolutely wonderful. She actually just had the teachers and students asking lots of questions as she told them about the fairies around her house. She said you have one named Sparkly Blue Iris, with blue wings and long golden brown hair? Who comes to visit and leaves her little gifts, like an acorn and a rock she now has in her bedroom?”
“Oh… yeah,” Mulder said, glancing at Scully who smiled with a nod. “We saw some fireflies out in the yard a few weeks ago and I told her they were fairies flitting around and preparing the world for the next day. It became a discussion about where they live, what they do, and the different types of fairies. We built a couple of small houses to give them a chance to rest after they’ve worked so hard and decorated them to look inviting to a fairy. We left some treats for them: a shiny button, a piece of pink ribbon she really likes, and a very tiny picture of Faith so they know who she is and that she’s a kind person. The fairies then reciprocated, leaving gifts for her, like the ones you’ve mentioned.”
Mrs. Cohver grinned and nodded, clasping her hands together.
“I can’t tell you how happy that makes me,” she said, with a sigh. “Children need that sense of wonder, even if later they may be disappointed that it’s not true. Building the imagination is detrimental to helping them grow into adulthood. It lets them believe anything is possible and that anything can be accomplished.”
“I couldn’t agree with you more,” Mulder said and Scully saw how her words seemed to calm his worries. She smiled and grasped his fingers loosely.
“My husband has a very active imagination and love of the fantastic there is in the world.”
“Then I’d say Faith is in great hands,” Mrs. Cohver said, smiling at them and touching Mulder’s upper arm. “Will you be joining us for the luncheon?”
“Yes. We were taking a moment, just in case,” Scully said, glancing at the door.
“I completely understand. The first few days are always toughest, but it gets easier, I promise. She’s in for a fun and exciting year with the teachers and the students.”
“We know,” Scully said, smiling at Mulder as he nodded in agreement, sighing softly.
“Good. I need to stop in the office and then I’ll be over to join everyone, to answer any questions or assuage any concerns.” She smiled and her eyes crinkled at the corners.
“Thank you,” Mulder said and Scully squeezed his fingers.
“See you soon,” Mrs. Cohver said with a nod and walked toward the office.
“You good now?” Scully asked Mulder and he nodded with a last glance at the door.
“She’s talking about the fairies,” he said, interlocking their fingers. “She’s okay.”
“She is indeed,” Scully said, smiling at him.
“Let’s go get something to eat, or at least some coffee.”
“Hmm, a good idea,” she agreed, squeezing his hand and starting toward the other parents.
She smiled as she thought of how excited Faith had been since last week, counting down the days until she got to come back to school. She had picked out a new backpack that came with a matching lunch bag. It was sky blue with purple straps and had a happy faced rainbow with white clouds at the bottom of it. A purple water bottle with smaller rainbows and clouds had come  with it and she absolutely loved it.
She had picked out a special outfit: laying it out on her bedroom floor and telling them every night why she wanted to wear it and how she wanted her hair brushed.
They had all gone to the library and checked out a few books on the first day of school. Faith had asked to hear them every night, telling them how her school had toys like the ones in the book, and a place for her backpack to hang up.
Mulder had told her how much fun it would be, about the friends she would make, and things she would do. She had been beyond excited, smiling and asking to hear it all again, and he had obliged her.
“I know I’ve been talking up the whole experience for her,” he said, as if reading her thoughts and she smiled. “I want her to enjoy being here, but I also don’t want her to be here at all. Not yet.”
“I know you don’t.”
“There’s a big but waiting to be said, I can sense it,” he said, squeezing her hand and she laughed.
“You already know what I’m going to say,” she told him. “We’ve gone over it a few times.”
“Yeah,” he said with a sigh. “I’ll get used to it. I just need a little time.”
“Unlike me,” she said, looking at him out of the corner of her eye.
“What do you mean?” he asked, turning his head and frowning at her.
“Inside you said that me missing her was not the same as you missing her,” she said.
“I did?”
“You very much did,” she said, trying not to smile as his frown deepened.
“I don’t… don’t remember saying that.”
“Not out loud, anyway,” she mumbled and he stopped her, turning to stare at her fully.
“I don’t remember saying that, or implying that you wouldn’t miss her in the same way I would. I’m sorry, Scully.”
“Oh, Mulder,” she said, cupping his cheek and smiling. “I know it’s going to be hard, a lot is changing. She’ll be in school and I’m going to be back at the hospital part time in November. Things are going to be different and I know it will take some adjustment.”
“Hmm,” he hummed, closing his eyes briefly and leaning into her hand.
“Change is good when done for the right reasons.”
“Yeah. I’ll need to find something to fill my empty hours.”
“Oh! Well, if you’re looking for ideas, I’ve got a document on my computer with at least fifteen things that need attention. The shed could be cleaned out and reorganized, the basement too. The porch needs-”
“Okay okay,” he said with a laugh, pulling back from her hand and shaking his head. “I’m not sure I’m that desperate yet.” She smiled and he bent to kiss her softly.
“A couple of weeks and it will start to feel normal,” she whispered and he nodded, kissing her once more.
“Okay. Enough of my moping,” he said, giving his body a shake as though to reset it. “I don’t want her feeling anything but happy and excited. Let’s go mingle, you know how I love doing that.”
She laughed as his hand found its spot on the small of her back and they joined the other parents.
Over coffee and food, they got to know the parents of the children in Faith’s class. Some of them were older, with other children at school, and some were younger, experiencing it all for the first time. They were all excited for their children to be moving onto a new chapter in their lives, but emotional at the same time.
Mrs. Cohver joined them, as promised, and answered questions and concerns, reassuring them all once again. Scully watched her and felt greater respect for her at the patience and attention she gave to each parent. No matter the question, she was kind and informative, and Scully knew they had made the right decision with the preschool.
They heard the children as they came onto the playground near where they were gathered. Scully caught sight of Faith who paid them absolutely no attention as she climbed onto the play structure and went down the slide before running away and laughing. Scully felt a bittersweet heaviness in her chest and she exhaled, hoping to let it go.
“In fifteen minutes, when recess has ended, the children will go back into the classroom. They will clean up any mess that has been made and then they will gather on the rainbow rug,” Mrs. Cohver said. “At that time, we will open the door and you’re welcome to come back in and join us as we say goodbye. Thank you all for being here and sharing your children with us. I know they will have a wonderful year learning and exploring the world around them.”
Choruses of thanks went up as Mrs. Cohver said goodbye and left the group. Mulder raised his eyebrows at Scully and she smiled.
“Did you see her?” he asked and she nodded. “She looked like she was acclimating well.”
“She did.”
“Good,” he breathed and she nodded again. “I’m gonna grab a couple of those cookies for her. Watch my six.”
He turned around quickly and she laughed as she watched him stealthily grab two chocolate chip cookies, quickly wrap them in a napkin, and walk back to her with a wink.
“I don’t think you need to be so sneaky, I think half the parents did the same thing.”
“Shh,” he warned and put them into the bag she carried.
“Oh, so now I’m an accomplice?” she asked with a chuckle.
“For better or worse, honey,” he said, winking again.
“Thievery definitely being the worse of it,” she stated and he put his finger to his lips as he smiled.
When the children had gone inside, the parents walked back to the classroom and waited at the door. Scully took Mulder’s hand again, the connection feeling lighter this time knowing Faith had undoubtedly had a good day. He squeezed her hand and nodded, silently telling her everything was okay.
The door opened a few minutes later and Mrs. Cohver smiled as she welcomed them inside.
All of the children were on the rug, their teachers sitting with them as they chattered excitedly. Faith spotted them and waved, grinning from ear to ear as she bounced on her knees.
“Daddy! Mommy! I had so much fun!” she said to them as other children greeted their parents.
“Wonderful, love,” Scully said, smiling back at Faith.
“Welcome back, parents,” Mrs. Cohver said. “At this time next meeting, the children will have already done this, but we wanted to include you in it today. It’s the goodbye song we sing at the end of each day, a signal that the time we shared together has come to an end. It has been a pleasure meeting all of you today. Please remember to get your child’s items from their cubbies and we will see you on the next day of school.” She clapped and everyone joined in, the kids cheering and laughing.
The goodbye song was sung, the teachers having special hand motions which the children attempted to mimic and would have learned soon. When the day was announced over, parents walked forward to collect their children and Faith ran to Mulder, hugging his legs and smiling up at him.
“Daddy! I went on the slide. It was like this.” She let go of him and stepped back, making a whooshing noise and moving her hand down and around her as she spun in a circle. “It was fun.”
“That fast, huh? It sounds like it was fun,” he agreed, grinning as he watched her.
“Yup!” She nodded, smiling happily, and Mulder picked her up to give her a squeeze.
“I’m happy you had a good time, honey. Let’s get your stuff and we’ll head home, okay?”
“Okay!”
He set her down and she ran to her cubby to get her things plus some assorted papers that had been placed inside of it. Arms full, she came back to them, Scully helping her to sort it all and put it into its proper place.
“Wait, that’s for Daddy,” Faith said, taking one of the papers from Scully. “Here, Daddy. I made this for you.” She handed it to him and he smiled as he took it.
“Oh wow, this is beautiful. Wait… hang on. Is this Iris?”
“Yes!” Faith said, clapping her hands and smiling. “See her blue sparkly wings, Daddy?”
“I do indeed, my love. She’s perfect. You did a great job painting her.”
“Could I see?” Scully asked and Mulder handed her the painting.
It was a nearly perfect triangle shape painted dark blue with lighter blue triangles coming from her sides, large black round head with two black dots and a big smile that filled up most of the space, stick arms with three fingers each, and brown hair coming from the head and down to the bottom of the dress.
“Wow,” Scully said, nodding her head. “This is a beautiful painting.”
“Thank you, Mommy,” Faith said, beaming as she looked up at Scully.
They said goodbye to Miss Cole and Mrs. Cohver, thanking them for a wonderful first day.
Holding hands with both of them, Faith told them about her day and how much fun she had. Scully smiled and watched Mulder nodding, his shoulders relaxing with each positive word Faith had to say. He caught her eye and gave her a wink.
Buckled in her car seat and ready to leave, Mulder asked for the surprise Scully had in her bag. She smiled as she took out the napkin wrapped cookies and watched Faith’s eyes light up when Mulder handed one to her.
She was nearly asleep when they pulled up the house, her head falling forward many times before she leaned it against the side of her car seat.
She said a sleepy hello to Bella as Mulder carried her inside and up to her room. Scully brought in the bags and school papers, Bella whining softly at the bottom of the stairs, but not venturing further.
“I know, Bells,” Scully said, walking over to pet her after she set the items onto the table. “She’s a little tired today, it’s been an exciting one for her and she needs a little nap. She’ll be down soon and will tell you all about it.” Bella’s tail thumped gently against the wall as she licked and nudged at Scully’s hand. “You’re a good girl, Bella.”
She rubbed her ears and patted her head, speaking quietly, before stepping back when she heard Mulder closing Faith’s bedroom door and starting down the stairs.
He bent and rubbed Bella’s ears when he reached the bottom, saying hello to her as her tail continued to wag. He smiled and stood up straight as he glanced at Scully and then beyond her to the stuff on the table.
Giving her arm a light squeeze, she watched him walk over and pick up Faith’s painting of Iris. Smiling at it, he turned back to her and she smiled back.
“I’m going to add her name and date on the back and then I want to run something past you.”
“Okay…” she said, her curiosity piqued.
“Be right back,” he said, walking into his office.
Her mind was racing as she wondered what he could possibly want to discuss when he came back out and stood beside her.
“This is the first,” he said, indicating the painting. “The first of years of crafts and art that she’ll be bringing home from school or wherever she is when creativity strikes.”
“Okay…”
“So I was thinking, we should have a dedicated space for said art. A mini gallery, so to speak.”
“Where exactly did you have in mind?” she asked with a smile.
“Here,” he said, pointing to the wall space against the stairs with the short table in front of it and the adjacent corner, which still housed stacked trunks and a bookcase.
“Oh…”
“I know the things hanging on the bulletin boards were more of a hindrance than anything else, but this will be different. A happy collection, rather than one of conspiracy theories and unanswered questions.”
“I love that idea,” she whispered.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“Great,” he said with a smile. “So, you up for doing some redecorating while she sleeps?”
She looked around at what they would need to do in order to accomplish the task before Faith woke up and she nodded with a smile.
“Great,” he said again, putting the painting on the dining room table. “I’ll go get some of the boxes from the garage that we seem to have been collecting recently. We can sort through what we want to keep and what can be placed somewhere else in the house.”
“Okay,” she said, already imagining how it would look with Faith’s creations filling the space. Maybe it could do with a new rug too. And a bean bag chair or something similar where she could sit and look at what she made.
“Get ready to roll up your sleeves, woman,” he said, taking her hand and spinning her quickly before pulling her close as she laughed in surprise. “Because we’ve got some work to do.”
“Get the boxes. I’m ready.”
He kissed her, called to Bella to come with him, and whistled as he walked out the back door heading to the garage.
Yes, she thought, looking back at the jumbled and relatively unused corner. She pictured Faith’s excitement when she saw it had been a space created especially for her, and she smiled. It’s a perfect idea.
