Short Story Prompt: She was a stranger in a very strange land...
~~~
(Y/n) was a stranger in a very strange land...
You could see the strange creatures by the side of the dirt road you were walking on... A strange little leaf creature was flustered when it saw you staring and ran away deeper into the forest. You didn't chase after it for fear of a trap or going off the path you were taking.
You remember how you got here. You were taking a hike into the mountains before a loose rock made your foot slip. Rolling down the hill, you came to a stop and when you cough out the dirt, you were stunned at the change of scenery. Around you, you were in a grassy plain and were certainly NOT in the mountains anymore.
Sighing, you try to look for anybody to ask for information. With only a bag of hiking supplies in hand, you would be fortunate to at least know where you were!
A neigh from behind made you turn around...
"You alright there, miss?"
Story Prompt 59
Under the warm embrace of the sun, a young woman took a seat beside a man on a bench in the park. The man's gaze remained fixed ahead, his expression carrying the weight of the world upon his shoulders. Startled by the intrusion, he turned to regard the woman, her presence stirring a flicker of curiosity within him.
"Beautiful day, huh?" she remarked, breaking the silence with a gentle smile.
"Mm," he murmured in response, his voice heavy with weariness.
Their exchange hung in the air, a delicate dance of words amidst a backdrop of silence. His eyes scanned the surroundings, observing the fear that gripped those nearby. His hands remained hidden within his pockets, fingers toying with something concealed within.
"What's your name?" she inquired, her voice soft and inviting.
He hesitated before replying, "Why do you want to know?"
"Because I'm tired of being strangers," she replied with a playful grin.
He shifted uncomfortably, unable to meet her gaze. She was a vision of serenity, her presence a balm to his troubled soul. Despite his reservations, he found himself drawn to her.
"I can't," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Then I won't tell you mine," she countered, her laughter dancing on the breeze.
Their conversation ebbed and flowed, punctuated by moments of introspection. He marveled at her beauty, so familiar yet enigmatic. She, in turn, found solace in his company, a kindred spirit in a world fraught with uncertainty.
"Do you know who I am?" he ventured, his tone tinged with uncertainty.
"Of course," she replied cryptically.
"Then why ask my name?"
She offered no explanation, content to revel in the shared silence. As they sat side by side, he stole glances in her direction, captivated by her presence. She, too, found herself drawn to him, a sense of deja vu lingering in the air.
"You know I could hurt you, right?" he warned, his words tinged with regret.
"Dangerous? Perhaps. Hurt me? Not likely," she quipped, her laughter a melody in the quietude of the park.
Their exchange took on a poignant tone, each word laden with unspoken meaning. He reached out tentatively, his fingers brushing against her cheek. She smiled in response, a wistful expression in her eyes.
"It's time to let me go," she whispered, her form beginning to fade.
He watched helplessly as she vanished before his eyes, a ghost of his past slipping away into the ether. Alone once more, he was left to ponder the fleeting nature of love and loss in a world consumed by shadows.
Trying to find my balance, I fell back into a cushion of snow behind me.
She dropped her skis and fell too.
We died in laughter with tears in our eyes.
The kind of moment you laugh about together when you’re old and grey and tired.
I didn’t want to stop laughing.
Nor crying.
I wished to cry for the rest of my days.
Coronation
“Cheers!” my friends and I toast to another job well done.
“Ena, you really saved my ass out there! I thought I was doomed when that goblin got me from behind.” Reef laughed heartily.
“What else would I do?” Ena rolled her eyes, “Just let you lay there and die? I’m supposed to heal you.” She laughed.
I smirk “Hey, I’m the one who killed that goblin for you, where’s my thanks?” I ask leaning back in my chair with my arms crossed.
“Yeah, you and Ash were supposed to keep them off of me in the first place!” He shot back.
“Hey, don’t go blame me now. I was shooting at them non-stop! How many goblins were in that dungeon?” Ash sighs before taking another drink.
“Yeah, we made it out of there by the skin of our teeth...” Ena said before drinking the rest of her drink and slamming it down on the table. “I’m ready for another round.”
I looked down at my cup debating if I should just quickly drink the rest of it. Before I could make my decision, I looked to see a tall fae walk through the tavern door. His gold-trimmed clothes made it clear he was a part of the royal court. He scans the area before locking eyes with me. Sighing, I finish my drink and get up. “Me too, I’ll go get the next rounds of drinks.” I smile at Ena. Walking to the bar I noticed the fae following me.
“Bracken.” I glare at him.
“How long do you intend to hide from your responsibilities?” Bracken walks up beside me. “A glass of Sunbeam.” He motions to the bartender.
“Can I get another round for my friends and I as well?” I asked the bartender pointing towards the table. The bartender nodded her head.
“Well?” he asks.
I sat there for a second. “I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know? Your Highness- “
“Don’t call me that here.” I narrow my eyes.
Bracken pauses. “Nora, you were born to rule, not to run around the kingdom hiding among the commoners.” disgust coating his words.
“These ‘commoners’ are my people, some of them my friends. I will run around with the for as long as I want.” I silently dared him to challenge me.
“They’re not yet your people. Your coronation is in two weeks, and we need you at the palace.” I turned to him surprised.
“What do you mean my coronation is in two weeks?” I demand. “What happened to my father?”
“Maybe here isn’t the best place to talk.”
I sigh. He’s right we can’t discuss this in the middle of a tavern. I turn and glance at my friends. The bartender returns with the drinks, handing me 4 pints of Ale and Bracken his Sunbeam. “We’ll talk about it later.” I grab the drinks. “I’ll be back there soon,” I add before making my way back to the table.
“Hey, Noras back with the drinks!” I hear Ena excitedly call as I make my way there.
I just smile before handing them their drinks. “So, what are we talking about?”
“Oh, nothing serious, just wondering who dark and handsome was talking to you.” Ena smiles back, taking the drink from me.
“Just an asshole,” I say not wanting to go into detail.
Reef raised an eyebrow before taking a drink. “An ex?”
“No.” I state more firmly. “It’s nobody.” I look down at my drink with questions running through my mind.
I drink until I can’t think and laugh and dance with my friends until sunrise wondering what they would ever think if they found out I was the crown princess of Ixtal.
------------------------------------------------------------
“How long do you intend to hide from your responsibilities?”
“I cannot give you a definite answer.”
“Your highness, you were born to rule, not run around the kingdom hiding among the commoners.”
“I prefer to make my own decisions.”
“Then can you please decide to return? Your coronation is in two weeks.”
