when i think about my headcanons for shadow knights, in my mind it's a lot of fun to emphasize the undead part of them, as well as how torturous the maturation process of a newly birthed shadow knight to a fully-realized one could be. the call is an idea i like to ruminate on as well.

laurance talks early on about how being a shadow knight effects his thinking. he hesitates less, and is more inclined to selfish, spiteful thought patterns. i like to think of this being the ebbing tide of the call carefully drawing in and out of the consciousness in increasingly powerful waves. it grows from tiny whispers in the back of a shadow knight's mind into a violent cacophany that boils beneath the skin with terrifying urgency to be let free the longer the knight rejects it.

as for the physical state of being a shadow knight, this is where the emphasis on the necrotic aspects i was talking about comes in. i take a lot of inspiration for my shadow knight headcanons from the novel "hell followed with us" by andrew joseph white. in that book the main character, benji, has been forcibly infected with a disease (referred to as "seraph", the book covers a lot of christian religious themes) that is slowly, over the course of weeks, turning him into a monster. it's essentially like his body is rotting into becoming something new, and the visceral, monstrous imagery and the way his slow evolution from boy to beast is described is very similar to how i picture becoming a shadow knight feels/looks.

here's some relevant excerpts from my copy of the novel for those who haven't read it. the highlighted lines are the parts most accurate to my headcanons of shadow knights (content warning for descriptions of gore):

i kind of like the idea of shadow knights (like laurance) that didn't complete their transformation ritual and/or reject the call and stay in the overworld being punished by their own body with a slower, more agonizing transformation than if they simply accepted their new undeath and killed who they're supposed to in order to reach their full potential.

however it happens though, it's never pretty. a shadow knight's "true" form (when they activate their powers) reeks of sulfur and death, when they grow in size it sounds just as sickening as it looks, spasming limbs and ripping flesh with the deafening noise of crunching bone and tearing ligaments. smoke and something like ichor both pour from their nose and mouth. if irene is light, life, clear water, and cool, solid quartz and marble and gemstones then a servant of shad would, of course, embody the opposite. i suppose by that description you could also draw a comparison between shad/shadow knights and the desolation/the lightless flame from the magnus archives, if anybody is familiar with that show as well.

anyways im rambling, i just needed to word vomit all these ideas since i wanna talk more about my headcanons on here rather than just character analysis posts lmao

fanfiction is so weird like I COULD be writing it about the blorbos from my current hyperfixation but no I've two WIPs current and one is for the 2008 childrens mmorpg that I never even played until after I started writing the fic and the other is for an anime I watched in my edgy teen phase when I was first getting into anime. The Dialectical Humanism of Big-Ass Robots: An Intro

“There’s a deep, earnest seriousness to most mecha shows (especially within the “real robot” subgenre) that implores the audience to grapple with intricate ideas and themes drawn from philosophers like Aristotle, Nietzche, and Rousseau, oftentimes complete with allegorical mouthpieces for competing ideologies.”

My high school students always lose their shit when I tell them that I, Coach Werner, also watch anime. I kinda feel bad about it. By now, I know I’ll see the excitement die from their eyes little by little as they pepper me with questions, searching for a connection with show after show after show.

“Coach, have you seen Jojo?”

“Nope.”

“What about DBZ or Naruto?”

“Not since before you were born.”

“Attack on Titan? Utena? Tokyo Ghoul?”

“Not yet, though they’re on my list.”

“The fuck Coach? I thought you said you watch anime!”

When I tell them I mostly watch mecha, they get confused. After I explain that mecha are the ones with jumbo-sized robots, they groan. I’ve even had one kid say that didn’t count. As a general rule, I try to not let the opinions of 15 year olds hurt my feelings; I only docked his grade a couple points.

Whatever my students may think, oversized anthropomorphized robots have fascinated me since I was a kid. Over the years, as I’ve revisited shows from my youth and found new mechanized, cel shaded rabbit holes to tumble down, I’ve tried to figure out what exactly was so appealing about the genre. There’s definitely a bit of wish fulfillment, a sorta kaiju-sized power fantasy, sure, but that’s not all of it. Same with intricate sci-fi world building, and of course the thrill of pew-pew dogfights and beam saber duels. But none of those alone seemed to account for the whole thing. They’re all fun set dressing, definitely worth a watch on their own but not enough, I don’t think, to capture my imagination for nearly a quarter of a century.

This series, The Dialectical Humanism of Big-Ass Robots, started off as a rambling, borderline incoherent and definitely substance enhanced diatribe that tried to explain how excited I was for the first episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury. It feels right, though, both the name and the bigger through line.

There’s a deep, earnest seriousness to most mecha shows (especially within the “real robot” subgenre) that implores the audience to grapple with intricate ideas and themes drawn from philosophers like Aristotle, Nietzche, and Rousseau, oftentimes complete with allegorical mouthpieces for competing ideologies. There’s also the slightly goofy and always physics-defying “rule of cool” concepts of the robots themselves–I mean, who doesn’t want to see a boom cannon with angel wings, or a crucified rage monster, or transforming karaoke jets?–that can easily be laughed off as a kid’s cartoon. Any foolhardy (read: hubristic and dumbasstic) attempt to try to find unifying threads within such a wide and varied genre has to address both of those tendencies. Here, friend, you will find one such foolhardy attempt.

Mecha anime, more than any other subgenre, has a fundamental tension summarized by two infuriatingly simultaneous, contradictory truths:

Anthropomorphized mechs bring out the best in humanity, allowing us to overcome our flaws and leap forward into a better future.

Anthropomorphized mechs feed into the worst traits of humanity, allowing us to destroy ourselves in new and technologically advanced ways.

Those two overwhelmingly common truths, when taken together, can be summarized in fancy philosophy jargon with just two words: dialectical humanism.

Dialectics is a concept pioneered (in the West, at least) by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel during the late 18th and early 19th century. There’s literally a whole field of study called “Hegelian Dialectics” that we’ll touch on from time to time, but the main thing to know is that two mutually exclusive and contradictory ideas are often both true at the same time.

Humanism has a long, fraught history, but the most common Western interpretations stem from Enlightenment-era ideals. Essentially, humanism boils down to the belief that humankind can progress beyond its animalistic nature through a combination of empathy and rational thinking. Again, we’ll be touching on a whole slew of humanist thinkers throughout this series.

So that’s The Dialectical Humanism of Big-Ass Robots. I feel like mecha shows–from Astro Boy to Zeta Gundam, and almost everything in between–play with this dialectic, where the mechs themselves represent humanity’s ultimate destruction and ultimate salvation simultaneously. Sometimes we struggle to survive, sometimes we overcome and thrive, and sometimes we find ourselves transformed into an ocean of pink goo.

Depression, memory, and trauma, and why Shinji can’t just get in the fucking robot

The power of music (and love, hope, and propaganda) in a transforming space city

And much, much more.

I will take this as a brief detour to say Wolfwood gives me such intense gender envy it's concerning thank you and goodnight.

Wolfwood isn't necessarily fake, so much as he is uh... loose. Only Stampede has had him outright say "I don't believe in God" and I think that changed? I've mentioned wanting to see them interact before in my 003 for Amon so I'm quite glad you agree. I think what would bother Amon the most would be despite the fact that this guy is a straight-up priest. But I love the thought of them eventually getting along simply by nature of common experience. They're very similar in certain ways but simultaneously so very different. The other funny bit is that technically Wolfwood is a Christian priest, whereas Amon is Catholic. Also canonically Amon is an inch or two taller but spiritually I think Nick is taller. And if he actually stood up straight instead of doing his signature Punisher hunch who knows. He's either leaning forward or leaning back, this man's spine has not been straight a day in his life. Meanwhile Amon stands like a board.

((just ranting abt writing fanfics you can ignore me lmao. I'm just in a weird place atm but I'm feeling kinda passionate abt writing rn so I'm gonna vent

originally I wrote a lil of this in the tags but then decided to just chuck it under a readmore so people aren't subjected to it against their will. then it got really long.

I'm not actually expecting anyone to read this im just sorta venting to myself. it helps me get my thoughts sorted if I write them down. I can also look back through my #.vat file tag in a few years from now and hopefully be like "wow I'm doing so much better than THAT now", so if that's the case, hi future Vatta! so, I haven't been online much bc I've just been in a weird limbo lately and I'm really busy when I'm at home either sorting stuff out or, with my PDA, doing anything I can to avoid my responsibilities lmao

I've been rereading my Tokyo ghoul light novels (I only have Void and Days ? I think they're called), rewatching Zankyou no Terror, and Bungou Stray Dogs (plus the live action Beast film which was? hilarious but I don't think it was supposed to be), and just suffering lmao

I've been locked out of the systems at work for a bit, but I still need to be there and wait for the IT ticket to be sorted, so I've gotta be at my desk, cant have my phone or anything, so instead of sitting there doing nothing, I've either been reading, doing codeword puzzles, or I've been writing up 'drafts' for potential fanfics.

in this year of our sufferer 2024. I've been writing up some self indulgent homestuck college AU lmao. I've written over 60 sides of a5, (not inc the inbetween sections where I wrote some stuff on the chromebook at home) some notes, some accidental first draft, bc I wanted something to take up the time. but my handwriting is terrible, I don't write fast enough for my brain, I have a lil dyslexia so the letters and words get jumbled sometimes, and I have this weird thing where I don't do spaces right. but I've been trying to upload it to Google docs with Bixby's photo text extraction. it's pretty good considering how bad my writing is, then I just need to go through and touch it up, the main issues are things like names, there's some letters I do weird like my v turns into an r, or every p it thinks is a capital, but overall. amazing how technology do that.

(see my long ass rambling isn't just confined to venting. I also pretend to write actual things. you can still leave you know. I'm not holding you hostage until you read all this. you have free will)

can't remember how I ended up back in fanfic hell but I read back through like all my old published fics (aside from the cringe ones I orphaned) and the writing isn't terrible. I don't think I actually finished any of them though, which really shows my true nature lmao,,, but I've picked up a few things on my writing style now. and I've got a few things I see other people do that I wanna avoid bc I personally don't like it, and it's mostly about balance, like using names too often/not enough, being too descriptive like All The Time and making the writing really nice, but not much happens in the story so you take like an hour to read each scene, vs not enough description so everything is happening but you don't really get a visual or a breather to appreciate what's happened so far. I've been working on finding my right balance, which is imo easier if you're writing fanfic bc first up you hardly ever have to describe the characters. if someone's reading it they already know who they are. and for scenes you can take some inspo from the source material. does the original work put alot of effort into setting a cool scene? if not, then you don't have to either! if it's 90% scenery then you've gotta do it too I don't make the rules

I'm losing steam now I'm so sleepy and I've gotta go to work in a bit ugh.

I've been thinking about trying out writing some BSD fics but on an anonym not linked to my main Ao3, bc the themes are doozys and I kinda just wanna have the freedom of anonymity. also I'm a baby and if someone publicly criticises my stuff without it being a requested critique then it makes me bleh (I've had a few comments in the past of just general negatives, not even constructive feedback, not that I asked for any anyway...), but the abilities are tricky to write for, so it's effort lol

anyway I'm gonna stop now ive gotta get ready for work

what better person to explain amino to u than somebody who was on there since he was ten years old (me). originally amino was just a few standalone apps (anime, gaming, pets… i think there was one other but i’m blanking on it) at that age i spent my time on pets amino bc. well! i wanted to talk abt my pets. at its core amino was just a forum where u could post n talk to other ppl abt similar interests. eventually the company expanded and amino became a standalone app with different communities/sort of mini apps within it. then, they opened the floor for its users to create their own communities (sorta like reddit?) and be in charge of managing them. which is where the leaders/curators came in. curators were essentially the lower lvl version of a leader bc you didn’t have the ability to ban or strike like leaders did. so, gestures, i was a curator on tokyo ghoul amino for like 4 years. i took the job as seriously as any 13 yr old could LOL. the rumors abt amino being insane is definitely true though. especially w being in a position of power i was absolutely in the trenches having to deal with other users. or having users come to me with drama between their friends expecting me to either solve it or dish out punishments. then if u had users actively trolling or harassing ppl you’d have to wait until the leaders were online to ban them so as curators sometimes we’d be wrapped up for hours trying to solve the issue n get in contact w our leaders 😭 IT WAS A MAD HOUSE!

My Villain deku HCs

Alright bc i can. here are some of my Villain deku HCs 1: He's not apart of the yakuza or the LOV. he doesn't work under any of them or any organization. 2: he does have a quirk called ‘Ningen o taberu-sha’ (Eater of man). Basically he is a cannibal (sorta like tokyo ghoul). 3: his favorite human food besides Katsudon is meat on a stick (mostly like strip steak) 4: His mission isn't to defeat Allmight, more so to make society realize how dumb they all are. 5: he can roam around the city without a disguise since he keeps his villainy pretty secretive and most times he wears a surgical mask when he goes out anyway. 6: Among the 'higher ranked' villain's he is known as their garbage disposal. If they have body or two they need to 'get rid of' or 'dispose of' He'll gladly take them off their hands for himself 7: He does have trauma from middle school and up till highschool. He never went to UA and just continued on with his education at a normal highschool. The bullying never stopped even when Katsuki when to UA. Others still went after him.

6: He's surprisingly very gentle with children and knows how to calm them down when they cry. 7: If he hasn't had any cannibal food in a while and eating raw animal meat isn't cutting it. He can wind up in a feeding frenzy state, going on a rampage and trying to find food. However, he can become rather weak if he goes for too long. 8: If his quirk activates, his eyes will change from green to red. 9: he used to be extremely self-conscious about his quirk but now he only hides it just so he doesn't cause issues. 10: He doesn't have a real villain name, he does think its funny when others try and give him one. 11: Bonus one. Dabi jokingly asked Izuku if he could eat Endeavor for him. Izuku said he wouldn't only because he knows Endeavor 'wouldn't taste good'

hey, before I ask I just wanted to say that your work is really inspiring and great to read (you're my favourite fanfic author atm), and please keep doing what you do! Recently I found a ship in a fandom that I liked that reminds me of Etoken. It's a very rarepair (only 10 fics on Ao3) and I want to contribute to the ship by writing some fanfictions about it like you did with Etoken. I wanted to ask, do you have steps in writing a fanfiction? Making a generalized idea first perhaps? What's your process in writing? This would be my first attempt to write something so I don't really know how to start.

well, first off, thanks a bunch for your compliments! looks like ppl were right when they said someone is always looking for exactly what you’ve written. it means a lot, and i'll use this to keep going! more under the cut

so okay, my writing process. usually it either starts with a vision/concept or a particular scene that i want to fully contextualize. i also like to start with a basic theme to sorta help guide me as i write things out.

for example, holometabolism was guided by a few things things: eto surviving cochlea, and eto going through a positive, reformative character arc. then, to flesh that out, the underlying theme was "love" in its various forms: eto's friendship with touka, eto's sisterly bond with hinami, eto's romantic connection to kaneki, and finally, eto's growing love for herself. this love then spreads out into the overarching narrative of ghouls' existence and the dismantling of furuta's ccg, upending the violence that tokyo ghoul has relied upon up until the time the fic takes place. progress is only made when the protagonists are not pursuing violence.

as for the actual "writing" part, i start with an outline of bullet points, things that i want to hit within the chapter/fic as a whole. the important stuff. after that, i just start writing, changing things as i go.

blank canvas is my longest ongoing fic atm, and the outline has been a big help. i've definitely changed some things here and there, but the story as it stands has been fairly faithful to the outline.

now, i have a natural sense for storytelling due to my degree and also lots of years of just writing or watching media and other stories, so bear in mind, if you're new to this, it won't always be obvious where you want to go with a fic. i recommend just watching movies/reading books/whatever you want to engage with regarding stories in order to just gather inspiration. creativity breeds creativity!

my best advice, above everything, is to put words on the page. actual fic stuff, outline, whatever gets you going! it counts, t r u s t

speaking of my weird lil hcs i have this au i rotate in my brain every so often abt the main mobians living in earth (sorta movie verse ish) and i hc they all watch a lot of anime and ive thought about this HARD so im gonna share my thoughts

sonic, silver, and knuckles are avid fans of stuff with powerscaling (dbz, naruto, one piece) and have long debates on who can beat who. knuckles has a very passionate defense for broly in literally every dbz convo and silver keeps reminding him hes Technically not canon (it does not stop knux). sonic also likes initial d for obvious reasons

amy and blaze are shojou/romance lovers and watch stuff like sailor moon or fruits basket. they talk about their little otps and crushes. they probably use those mspaint anime bases and like sharing art of their humansonas with each other.

tails charmy and marine all like more "kiddie" anime like pokemon, but tails particularly likes digimon cos of the tech themes. he also sometimes watches dbz with sonic. cream meanwhile likes magical girl stuff and will watch sailor moon with amy and blaze but also likes precure.

espio will join in the naruto enthusiasm with sonic, silv, and knux, but he also likes demon slayer. he wants to cosplay as tanjiro and vector helps him cos he thinks its adorable. blaze and silver join as nezuko and tokito.

speaking of vector- hes more into the claasics, so to speak. he swears by cowboy bebop.

lastly, rouge shadow and omega are more the "goths" of the group so they take more to serious shows like death note, tokyo ghoul, hellsing, or evangelion.

So I've actually thought about this a lot and it would definitely be a thing. I feel like it'd be more of an instinctual thing though, like it would be Gyutaro's instinct to bite/mark his partner (especially in intimate situations 👀). But it'd cause a lot of conflict between the two for sure. As Gyutaro would probably feel a strong urge to mark you but he'd be fighting with himself because he doesn't want to hurt you. And because of this he'd try really hard to avoid spicy situations (even though he'd want it oh so badly) because he'd be afraid he'd lose control. And since he has literal shark teeth you know it would hurt like hell.

If he does end up marking you he'd feel incredibly guilty and might would even try to separate himself from you because of it. It'd take a lot of time to convince him that you don't mind and are comfortable with it. He'd for sure feel incredibly embarrassed if his friends saw it because they'd definitely tease him (especially Douma and Ume). He'd make you cover it up.

He wouldn't admit that he secretly likes how it looks on you. ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)

Fanfic Writer Ask Game

Honestly, engaging with other fans and their creations.

So around the time I wrote Yamikumo the Black Rabbit, I'd been getting really into a group of fics by different authors who each had there own spin on the idea 'what if Midoriya had a quirk that made him monstrous/villainous.' I didn't exactly set out to follow a trend, but I'd be lying if I said those fics didn't influence me. On top of which, I was following a BNHA prototypes ask blog which introduced me to the BNHA characters' beta designs, and I was also rewatching Tokyo Ghoul at the time. Particularly, I was rewatching TG fight scenes on youtube because I just fucking love kagune, they're so fucking pretty. And, well, it all came together in my head.

Ever After kinda sorta was born the same way. I'd read a lot of 'Mike goes back in time after the fire and gets a second chance to be a good brother to his siblings' fics and basically had two thoughts:

A) What if the story was told from the POV of an outsider watching time traveler Mike suddenly transform into a different person overnight. (I thought I was so original for this. Then I found a one shot about Elizabeth wondering why Mike started suddenly acting like a different person. And also Will disappeared. Mysteriously.)

B) What if Mike failed to actually fix anything.

The fic I'm currently writing has actually deviated a fair bit from my original plan, but not all in ways that are obvious based on what I've currently published. I should probably revisit my outline and update it a bit to reflect all of the changes I've made...

But yeah. My inspiration basically comes from my admiration of other creative people in the fandoms I love. That and I basically live in my head 75% of the time and am constantly lost in a sea of random daydreams, some of which I actually like enough to write down XD.
