explaining my kpop lore

inspired by a tweet I made, we’re talking about seventeen, bts, got7, nct, and more!

so first of all, i consistently lied about how long I was into kpop because when I had a huge active Twitter account, you were seen as cooler if you were into it in your older days. so let’s just make that clear…oomfs I’m sorry </3 it’s been around 8 years or so (2015) is when I actually got into it. but I always used to say 2013.

anyway, I got into kpop right around when seventeen released their shining diamond EP. I stumbled upon them on YouTube and someone reacting to their shining diamond MV. I watched so many of their old predebut videos and very quickly they were the very first group I absolutely adored, and I only got into kpop social media after I started making edits of them on vine. before that I was exclusively following them through YouTube videos. i have always been a jun/scoups/VERNON lover but as of lately i don’t keep up with them actively.

my favorite songs by seventeen are simple, pretty u, HABIT (untouchable FLAWLESS track), Q&A, and change up!!

so after getting introduced to kpop by seventeen, I was then introduced to bts, got7, exo. I went through a serious and intense bts phase, like it was bad. had those black debut jerseys in my Amazon cart and everything like 😭

now, I was 13 years old here, so of course I was a bit obsessed with these men. i probably have thousands of pictures of jimin and jungkook saved in my google photos. yes it’s embarrassing but honestly, i was so happy i think it’s okay that i was a cringe 13 year old. as for my favorite members, i went through a phase with yoongi, hoseok, jimin, and jungkook 😭 i feel that because i loved this group so much my favorite really changed a lot, i liked them all equally. like during my discovery of bts, i immediately liked jimin, but during the i need u/run (hyyh) era I liked jungkook a lot, then during wings i was very attached to hoseok and yoongi </3 for a while now though, jungkook has been my favorite :)

my list of favorite bts songs is a huge list, but here it is; (using the Spotify titles because I forgot the hangul/romanization for them) tomorrow (top 5 for sure), just one day, butterfly, silver spoon, embarrassed, young forever, lie, reflection (also top 5), spring day, stigma, cypher 4, best of me, truth untold, singularity, black swan, boy with luv, fake love, SEESAW (top 3. argue with the wall.), you never walk alone, my time, and lots more. im not gonna say their discography is flawless, because every group has their stinkers, BUT bts is one of those groups I can just shuffle and most songs I won’t skip because I like them that much.

personally, I could make an entire post about wings and how insanely good that entire era was. I’m sure some kpop group has done the concept of every member having their own track before, but since I wasn’t into kpop before 2015, this is the first time it was presented to me. and it was done SO god damn well. i was obsessed with any and all fan theories, counting down to the next teaser, and lost my mf MARBLES when I finally watched blood sweat and tears for the first time. that era and album, the concept, the visuals, the MUSIC, FLAWLESSLY done. like do you hear that dissonance on lie? are you kidding me??? the strings?? tae’s voice on stigma????!!??!??!? I am so not normal about reflection, it’s very bad for meee!! it’s insane the production tha went into those tracks, they are ALL so good..the only songs I’m skipping on that album is just am i wrong and 2,3! THATS IT. YEAH, WE BUMPING INTERLUDE:WINGS TOO!

im still holding onto the hope that I can see them perform live someday. they are a group really special to me despite whatever infuriating fan wars were happening on Twitter in 2016/17. also just REALLY wanna hear the black swan into fake love transition like i just know that will change my life forever….

moving onto exo! I think I found them before BTS, but it wasn’t that much before. just like slightly, like I discovered EXO right before I discovered BTS. I was really sad because, by the time I discovered EXO, kris had already left the group. he was the one who caught my eye the most, which was in the mama exo-m music video. but i moved on from that and jongin was always my bias, it never changed. i did have a brief stint liking xiumin but I don’t think my bias ever rlly changed. i didn’t listen to as much of their music but i feel that their discography is a little timeless honestly, disregarding some interesting tracks…(looking at you wolf..)

my favorite exo songs are; what is love!! insanely good. moonlight, mama, playboy, el dorado (top 5 for sure😭), black pearl, shes dreaming, artificial love, MONSTER!!!!!!!, lucky one, obsession, the eve, SWEET LIES !!!! sad what their company’s management has done to exo as a whole but I still really enjoy their music. I recently watched their episode of killing voice and while I didn’t know many of the songs they sung, it’s always so nice to hear their voices. it’s always really great vocals from kyungsoo and suho. another group I really liked was monsta x, favorite members were always shownu and wonho <3 I did get to see them live on July 16, 2017! hyungwon was sick so he wasn’t there :( but it was an amazing night. i discovered so many new songs by MX and after that concert they were solidified as one of my favorite boy groups ever. some of my fave MX songs: perfect girl, from zero, fighter!!! (so INSANE live) dramarama, now or never, tropical night, shine forever, miss you, beautiful, STUCK!!!!, and beautiful! the clan was also an era I really really liked, the cinematic videos they had were amazing!!!

nct was a group i was lucky enough to watch debut which I feel their debut was INSANE. i can’t believe how early on mark lee established himself as an actually GOOD rapper. there’s a lot of boys in nct so i had a lot of ‘em that I really liked, but mainly taeyong, jaehyun, and doyoung. i really liked the concept of their sub units, the dreamies were so young when they debuted and it was a treat to watch them grow as artists. i know exactly where I was when I listened to the 7th sense, fire truck, and chewing gum for the first time. i unfortunately do not know too many of their newer stuff besides title tracks but i really like a lot of the stuff that they put out.

my fave nct songs: wake up (SO underrated), the 7th sense, boss, baby don’t stop, black on black, cherry bomb, SUN&MOON (had like a 30 second clip of this song as my pinned tweet for months. it genuinely changed my life hearing this for the first time), 0 mile, baby don’t like it, limitless, kick it, Pandora’s box, nonstop, punch, life is still going on 💛, we go up, chewing gum, ridin, and regular!!

i also really liked day6, my favorite member was jae and my favorite song of all time will always be i smile!! I saw them live and heard shoot me for the first time it was CRAZY. other songs I really liked were; I would, i wait, letting go, blood, sing me, and somehow.

alright time for my big one!! i actively followed got7 since 2015 when I discovered them. by this time they had JUST released just right, and what an insanely good video to introduce someone new to them 😭 so perfectly cute and catchy, like how could you not fall in love? And with the sea of content i had with all the real got7 episodes it’s like it was destined for them to be my favorite group of all time. And it’s crazy the absolute whiplash I got that same year when they got all dark and released if you do!!!! both such amazing AMAZING songs to be released in one year.

I’m gonna go ahead and skip my Twitter career as an ahgase, including the exposé thread on mark’s friends which blew up my account (looking back it’s weird for me as a 14 year old to police whom he was friends with, and the mf I exposed mark is still friends with him sooo…anyway) it’s long and a little embarrassing but just know I was ride or fucking die for got7 on Twitter. i was on there everyday, counting down the days to their next comeback, live tweeting during vlive streams, sending out thousands of tweets a day to vote for them on award shows, crying and screaming and terrorizing the timeline anytime mark so much as breathed in a cute way.

speaking of which, got7 is another group that my love for them was so big, it migrated around to almost every member. i of course always loved mark and made that very known, but there were times when i was tweeting just a bit more about yugyeom, or jackson, or bambam, or (surprisingly) jaebeom.

my experience definitely changed after I saw them live for the first time in the pit in Miami. it was pretty life changing and i know I say that a lot, but it was first concert EVER and i was so excited and happy. i cried immediately when they came out singing let me. got to do photo op for them (my amazing mommy allowed me to experience this) the picture has me sitting with jaebeom posing cutely above me. i was wearing like a weird thrasher shirt with a navy blue striped shirt under it and had very old and raggedy braids…I was going through a rough time financially. i got to see them again in Newark in 2019!! I didn’t get to do a photo op that time, but I was a lot cuter in my outfit.

I made so many amazing friends through kpop and despite the reputation kpop groups and fans have, I really loved being in an active community of people especially ahgases. lots of love to all my friends, nutdonalds my first gc of friends who made stan Twitter something worth coming back to every single day, cunt7 my best friends that I wouldn’t trade for the fucking world, leo who was my first best friend i met irl and showed me so much kindness always. and all the friends that stayed in contact with me after I kind of fell out of the kpop Twitter life, you all know who you are. 🩷

Today I finally, finally, finally looked up Omelas, because this sign in the Spring Day music video seemed too prominent to be meaningless.

It turns out Omelas is a fictional utopia, whose peace and prosperity depends on the perpetual misery of a single, helpless child. It’s a trolley problem of sorts, of a city-full of happy people as long as one child is abandoned and alone in the dirty dark, never given even a sliver of kindness. In the story (The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas), some residents choose to accept this as a necessary evil, while others choose to leave. For the ones who choose to leave, the story says, "The place they go towards is a place even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness. I cannot describe it at all. It is possible it does not exist. But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas."

It adds to all the other visual metaphors in the music video about the children who died aboard the Sewol and their grieving families. It makes me wonder if that last scene in the video, with the thawing plain and tree, is the place where people go when they reject a society that requires the vulnerable few to suffer on behalf of the many.

BTS You Never Walk Alone - Spring Day MV Theory: The Untold Story

Whose story is often unheard and untold?

The Discriminated… The Minorities…

When Kim Namjoon said You Never Walk Alone was the Untold Story… He wasn’t kidding. BigHit has done it again! Though this MV also fit the story of the boys’ journey, they still managed to discuss an underlying controversial issue.

SYMBOLISMS:

1. OMELAS: DISCRIMINATION OF THE WEAK

In case you haven’t read the story… Here is a rundown

First of all, let me say, this story is riveting in both its simplicity and complexity; and you could finish it in less than 15 minutes. The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas is an award winning short story written by Ursula Le Guin. The story starts with the narrator describing a utopian place called Omelas as the Summer Festival starts. Everything about the city is idealistic and the narrator even invites the reader to imagine his/her own utopian scenario and imagine that to be Omelas because Omelas’ perfection and happiness was hard to simply describe. The narrator claims that the people of Omelas were not stupid, that this was not the reason why they were happy, but he also states that the people of Omelas lived without guilt.

As vague and hard as it was for the narrator to describe Omelas, her description of the small, frail impoverished child was vivid. People of Omelas knew about the child’s existence, locked in a small basement but none of them helped or saved the child. The narrator believes that the child served as reminder for the people of a world opposite to what they have. The absence of the child makes what they have pointless and therefore the child’s existence was poignant for their system.

The more incredible part though, the part that got the narrator amazed, were the people who left Omelas. Those who chose to walk alone away from the surfaced perfection toward the unknown when they have seen the child.

In the MV you can see how their initial excitement of being in Omelas slowly changed. As if taking in what Omelas truly was.

Kookie goes to the desolate Omelas where ironically the No Vacancy sign was still lit. Like how minorities are refused entry when clearly there is still room.

In the end, unlike in the book where the citizens who face the realities of Omelas left alone, they all left Omelas together.

2. Snow Piercer: DISCRIMINATION OF THE CLASSES

Snowpiercer was a movie released in 2013. in the movie, the world was set into an infernal winter after an experiment to solve global warming backfires. The remaining survivors were those on board the Snowpiercer. By 2031, segregation was eminent. Elites inhabit the extravagant front cars and the “scum” inhabit the tail in squalid and brutal conditions. Under watch by guards, they are brought only gelatinous protein bars to eat and kept in their place in the social order by Minister Mason, while sometimes small children are taken away.

Kinda Hunger Games-ish huh?

Rebellion broke out because it seemed like the oppressed have finally had enough. Many died due to the rebellious attacks and the head of the keeper of the peace for the Snowpiercer told the leader of the revolution that it was he who planned the rebellion to reduce the population and maintain the balance of the sealed ecosystem, and subsequently orders the elimination of 74% of the remaining tail passengers. He explains the importance of using fear and chaos to maintain a necessary order and leadership on the train.

The leader of the revolution almost accepted the offer of the head peace keeper to lead what remained of the Snowpiercer but decided to continue the fight when he learned that small children from the tail section are being trapped as replacement parts for “extinct” machinery and that those in the tail section were literally being kept alive for spare parts.

In the end, an explosion happens that causes an avalanche. The train gets derailed and only two survive, one girl and one boy. They alight the train and see a polar. They learn that life was actually possible outside the oppressive train.

In the MV, Kookie and RM is shown riding the train but they keep entering the doors at the back. The train traverses a snowy terrain.

When the line stops, they all go down together and see a dying tree amidst a grassy field. It was the only semblance of life present, but it was enough to hang their shoe on it and mark the place as theirs.

3. Safety Pin Earrings: FIGHT AGAINST DISCRIMINATION

“#Safetypin I’m an ally… All those exposed to hate and violence, you’re not alone….”

No, it’s not a fashion statement, there is a deeper meaning.

4. Laundromat/ Segregation: RACIAL DISCRIMINATION

Honestly, where else can the term segregation be used that seems publicly acceptable?

Whites separated from colored.

This reminded me of a racial case I studied in law school, Yick Wo vs Hopkins 118 U.S. 356 (1886) (Who the F? would have thought I’d use that shit here?)

The immigration of Chinese to California began in 1850 at the beginning of the Gold Rush. As the Chinese became more successful, tensions with Americans grew. Californians were wary of the cultural and ethnic differences.

Yick Wo, was a laundry facility owned by Sang Lee. After twenty years of owning the facility as an undocumented immigrant, provisions set out by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors said that he could not continue to run his business due to an ordinance that was evidently racially targeted against all Chinese business owners.

This case was the first case where the United States Supreme Court ruled that a law that is race-neutral on its face, but is administered in a prejudicial manner, is an infringement of the Equal Protection Clause in the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

In the MV you can see that the blacks and whites inside were mixed. Whites, Blacks, toss it in! They’re one and the same.

5. Mountain of Clothes: ALL EQUAL!

In 2010, Christian Boltanski created a 40-foot-tall art installation at the Park Avenue Armory.

For Boltanski, clothes are simply a placeholder for 6000 real human beings who lived real lives. He told a journalist, “In my work there have always been a lot of photos of people, heartbeats of people—for me the clothing are people.” The magnitude of the pile illustrates the heaviness of all the hearts now lost.

In this work, Boltanski said that the mountain was an eternal afterlife of sorts, where every individual rests after death. In Boltanski’s view, we are all mixed together in death, no longer the distinct individuals we were in life. We become part of a great pile, individual pieces that have lost their minute details — a single, colossal entity.

This piece of art has been made in various cities all over the world.

BTS made themselves part of this mountain, a symbol of unity in lives lost due to discrimination.

6. Nods to the Sewol Ferry Tragedy: INJUSTICE

So many questions about these shoes. What I know… Jimin picked it up from the shore… and looked pale, kinda like he drowned.

It could honestly have so many meanings…

But given that this is an injustice close to their hearts, they might be giving nods to the Sewol Ferry tragedy.

The Sewol Ferry was a passenger ferry that capsized on 16 April 2014, killing 304 of the 476 people on board. More than 300 passengers were Danwon High School pupils on an organised trip, but only 75 students survived.

Months later, the captain of the ferry escaped the death penalty and has instead been sentenced to 36 years in jail for his role in the tragedy.

Prosecutors had demanded the death penalty and before the trial even started, President Park Geun-hye made a public statement condemning the crew’s action, saying that their decision to abandon ship had been “tantamount to murder”. The sentence means that the captain, aged 69, is likely to spend the rest of life in jail. In protest, friends and families of the victims laid out the shoes of the victims along with yellow cards and ribbons.

In December 2016, it was brought to light that 9000 artists were discriminated and blacklisted for criticizing the government and having a dissenting opinion in the Sewol case. In January, media leaked that Bangtan and Bighit donated money to the families of the Sewol family victims.

In the end of the video, Jimin is again looking sullen and holding the shoes.He was looking at the tree as if deciding what to do with it.

Another symbolism with a lot of interpretations in the video is the “shoes on the wire”. One other possible meaning for this is to give honor to the memory of a life lost.

7. The Yellow Ribbon: Symbol of Hope and Unity

The yellow ribbon has been used as a symbol of hope all over the world for a multitude of causes. From the desire for the return of American hostages held in Tehran between 1979 and 1981 to a fight against a dictatorship from a 21 year long regime in the Philippines in 1986.

The L finger symbol stood for the Filipino word “LABAN” which means FIGHT

For some it became a symbol of home coming and being reunited, hence the famous English song with lines that go, “Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree”. It symbolizes the hope of freedom, justice and return. This yellow ribbon has held different meanings to different groups of people but in all those times, it served one purpose, to be a symbol of unity for those part of a cause.

In South Korea, the yellow ribbon started as a symbol of hope for the return of 9 missing children from the Sewol Ferry Tragedy but it slowly grew to be more than that. It served as a reminder that the families that sought justice did not stand alone. The government slowly saw this as a symbol of rebellion and defiance. In truth, it sent a silent but unified message against the people who were the source of the injustice committed.

In the MV, you see Kookie having sole awareness (my obnoxious way of saying he was dead ass staring at the camera) while everyone was a moving blur.

After a while, he seemed to slowly realize that everyone else was moving around him and he joins the crowd.

Two possible meanings. First, the pessimistic view, is that Kookie was the one aware of the issues but no one else was. Everyone else was going about their own business and eventually Kookie joined the crowd…

The second possible meaning? The one I prefer. The more optimistic view, is that due to the movement of everyone around him, Kookie became aware of the need to move and act and joined the movement for the yellow ribbon cause.

Though sometimes you feel like you stand alone in the crowd fighting for something… look around, look closely… there are more people who understand your plight. Never stop moving. Eventually, if your cause is truly powerful, more people will move with you.

CONCLUSION!

Bangtan’s message was clear. For those who suffered injustice or have been discriminated against for being part of a minority, we know your untold stories. Your road may be unknown but YOU NEVER WALK ALONE

From the Book: The Ones who Walk Away from Omelas

Each one goes alone, youth or girl man or woman. Night falls; the traveler must pass down village streets, between the houses with yellow-lit windows, and on out into the darkness of the fields. Each alone, they go west or north, towards the mountains.

“They go on. They leave Omelas, they walk ahead into the darkness, and they do not come back. The place they go towards is a place even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness. I cannot describe it at all. It is possible that it does not exist. But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.”

Cobb: You’re waiting for a train. A train that’ll take you far away. You know where you hope this train will take you. But you can’t know for sure. Yet it doesn’t matter. Now, tell me why? Mal: Because we’ll be together!

BTS SPEAKS FOR THE YOUTH

one of the reasons I like BTS, and why I continue to admire their music and their image is because they don't lie. They write what they know, they write what they are going through and it echoes with a lot of people suffering through the same obstacles and tough times in life. From the N.O era BTS has always talked about issues that needed tackling. With bulletproof and n.o they were only addressing issues in Korea ,mostly because their average age at that time was probably barely 18-19. The BTS of 18 talked about being done with school, waking up to the fact that the education system and society in general was a well oiled machine that churns out perfect individuals. It cannot tolerate differences or average abilities. But you know what? I don't think the entire group themselves could relate to that, mostly because only the rap line used to write songs back then. With the HYYH era, they moved onto adolescence and maybe early adulthood. A time when most people their age were leaving the lovely white corridors of high school and moving into college dorms and first days of university. Their rebellion couldn't work anymore because in university, everyone is a misfit. Everyone is tied up with their fast paced life and their passions and their wants and nobody has the time or energy to discriminate. It's about drinking and partying and discovering all these people who you've spent time with for about a week, but they feel like soulmates. That. That was explained beautifully with I need you. I remember listening to it in my second year of university and remembering my first month of uni. That's exactly how I felt. Invincible. Like it was the best moment of my life. Everything was so beautiful. I felt SO MUCH. But then, you kind of move on. To this numbing realisation of how that entire feeling of 'too much' is short lived. It's a mirage. It's something that you're capable of only in your early 20's. Which was also the average age of BTS when they wrote the HYYH album (not when they released it). But my favourite part of wings, is it's the counter reaction to HYYH. In HYYH it was about elation and ecstacy and the feeling of 'we can do so much. We can be so much. We are the future' But in Wings you realise, dammit what kind of future are we making? This rotten world and it's rotten ideals, this is where we must live. This is what has been given to us. There is pain and heartbreak and loss and death and it happens a lot more than you let yourself believe. When you're a kid you're aware that birth and death are daily occurrences but you don't think it'll happen to you. In university I have seen people want to die, I've seen people die. It's a shocking revelation that 'we aren't unique or extraordinary or invincible'. But fuck it, we've got to make our bit of magic in this world to survive. That's the only way to survive. And that, is where YNWA comes. It's the realisation that happiness, needs to be worked for. That there are people who aren't as privileged as you. People that suffer and die. And that you can be those people any time, without a warning. YNWA is a waking up of sorts and for me, it comes at the right time. I'm in my senior year of university. I can pay bills now, I know I will barely survive on my salary when I graduate but I also know that some nights I'll drink myself to sleep and maybe some days I'll be dressed up well and maybe I'll go to brunch with my friends. It's the realisation that you're not the only one who's in pain, everyone is. And it's ok. We'll all get through it, if we just put a hand on somebody's shoulder, if only we compliment someone or pet a dog or eat some pizza or take a sick day. We are going to get through it. Because really, You never walk alone.

so i came up with a theory to explain the bts mvs and the whole like highlights reel and all that. this took me absolutly years to write lmao...

We think the mv's go in this order:

the not flashback parts of run / i need u

1. the flashbacks show a time when they were young dumb and having fun before everything happened when they were all friends and just having a good time.

2. all the bad things began to happen after the boys drifted apart after they visited the beach. (in the notes it says the drifted apart.). a generally accepted theory for why the boys went out of control was because jin died but i think it's just because they realised the harsher realities of life and had to deal with stuff and just kind of lost it.

this is because the spring day mv to me represents the last youthful happiness. a bubble, where for one last time they can feel carefree and joyful without the burdens of real life. this is because in the mv the motel is called omelas that they stand outside. “the one that walks away from omelas” is a book about a seemingly utopian city called omelas where everyone is happy and there is no pain or suffering. i believe that the day at the beach was their omelas.

in the book, once you are old enough you learn the truth that omelas isn't all happy because for everyone else to live joyfully one child lives in dark, filth and misery underneath the city. At that point, you can choose to say understanding that the one child suffers for the greater good or you can leave to an unknown place that is unimaginable to the people of omelas.

in the context of bts, i think this is a metaphor for the boys growing up. They have reached the age where they begin to realise all the dark things in the world and know that they have to do something about it because they can’t just ignore the pain and suffering. so they have to leave the beach eventually going home to their normal lives to deal with real life. they aren't innocent unknowing children anymore, they aren't young forever so they have to leave the beach and walk away from omelas.

i think when they hang the shoes on the tree - which you usually do for a dead person. it isn't for jin and jin doesn't die.they are converse shoes which could be a reference to past songs they made when they were younger i.e. converse high. so the shoes represent a younger them - their youth. so their youth has died and they have to walk away from omelas into the unknown where things, might not happy or okay.

3. the not flashback parts of run / i need u

these show the boys spiralling out of control as the unknown of real life hits them. like when taehyung accidentally kills his abusive father when hitting him. the fact the boys have drifted apart. i think it is because they aren't kids anymore and they have to deal with pain and suffering now they bubble of being children and the day at the beach has burst. so their accidents start to have consequences. they lose contact with each other and the fun is gone and the struggle of this causes them to act out - like yoongi. and fall into a depression of sorts - jimin lying in the bath. they aren't upset because jin died but because they aren't friends anymore and things in their life aren't happy and carefree as they once were. and it ends up with jungkook being hit by the car. and them having a fight (the notes) where jin says he punched taehyung.

4. the wings trailers show each of the boys in a sort of purgatory unsure of where to go next, trapped within themselves and in their own minds. a few examples - jungkook in the bed and the darkness stuck in a coma maybe after his car crash. taehyung - trapped in the cage which could be a metaphor for his own mind as he struggles with the fact he killed his own father. they are still stuck, trapped in the pain of what happened when they drifted apart. with only the memories of the happiness, they once had in the spring day which they hope will come again (which is what the song spring day is about).

5.love yourself highlight reel shows the boys as they try to move on. Jungkook meets a girl in the hospital as he gets better. jimin and hoseok dance with the girl. jin meets a girl at the level crossing and finds happiness with her. taehyung does stupid things like graffiti with the girl he meets stealing. namjoon sees the girl on the bus every day and yoongi plays the piano not alone anymore but with the girl he meets.

so they move on slightly. that is until things go wrong again. taehyung and the girl get caught. something happens to the girl jungkook likes after he recovered. jimin accidentally knocks the girl out (i think), jin's girl gets hit by the van and so on and so forth. so all the bad things come crashing down on them again. it ends with jin saying that everything could be fixed if they went back to that day and had done things differently. that all their troubles stem from there. but i also think it's trying to say that the boys will only feel more pain if they try to take their happiness from being with other people and that they need to work out who they are, what they want and love their own selves before they can fix all that happened when they left the beach, grew up and stopped being kids.

if they want to fix what happened with each other and truly be happy they need to look at themselves first. find away to love themselves and rely less on other people for happiness. otherwise they will be stuck on their downwards spiral endlessly. and thats why the comeback for september is titled love yourself.

Vmin song analysis - Winter in August - Part 1

Since this analysis ended up being so long it has been divided in parts. This is part 1.

This started as a Spring Day analysis, but it has since grown immensely. I actually rather call it a thematic analysis or something, and while Spring Day is still at the core of it all, I go through many songs and details outside of Spring Day connections.

The thing is that I have wanted to make an analysis of Spring Day for a long time in regards to Vmin, but have hesitated to do so because of the negativity I have received in the past when “making everything about a ship”. In particular when there are no obvious connections and when it is about a BTS song written by completely different members than Vmin. But this analysis is not about the meaning of the song as intended by the writers. Rather I am trying to explore the possible meaning of the song for the listener, in this case Vmin, and how they might relate to the song and then use the themes in their own creations. The core is the themes of Spring Day, but I will go through most of Vmin's solo songs to further discuss the themes and connections to Vmin.

I was going to post this for the 4 year anniversary of Spring Day, but got a bit delayed (then I wanted to post it in August but failed to meet the deadline again). I also want to take this time to state how much I love this song. It was the first new BTS comeback I experienced and it’s one of my absolute favorites out of all BTS songs and MVs. Nothing I mention in this post is to downgrade such a beautiful song with such powerful inspiration behind it to being about a ship, I simply want to point out how I think there seems to be a special place for this song when it comes to Vmin. (Of course the same sentiment applies to the other songs mentioned.)

We know it’s partly about Yoongi’s and Namjoon’s experiences of losing friends as they moved to Seoul, and of course also the Sewol ferry tragedy. But again, the actual inspiration isn’t of much consequence in this analysis. Because I am not here to say the song is about Vmin.

I am also not here to imply that all of the songs mentioned are directly inspired by Spring Day, but rather that the themes used and feelings felt might be similar and in some cases even lyrically similar. That being said of course these themes being quite common means it can all be coincidence and I simply managed to find enough things that fit, without those being intentional. Or it could of course be intentional but have other reasons or connections than Vmin. In fact most of these points will be connected to Taehyung and thus might be something for him personally that might not be meant to include Jimin at all.

On top of this there are of course many other BTS (and TXT) songs with similar themes as well, for example with spring coming. It’s also used a lot in relation to BTS’s theme of Persona and I am not ignoring the possibility that the connections could be made more for that purpose than anything relationship related. Still, I wanted to make this analysis, and I hope you realize as usual I could be wrong and this is just a theory. Because even though it’s not a Vmin song in the direct sense, I think it's possible Vmin relates to it, or at least that Taehyung does. I am using Spring Day over other songs with similar themes as I see it as an early example of many of these themes, and because of the other more direct connections I have found. Vmin have a few interesting moments connected to the song and I personally think they are worth noting. The way I see it a lot of these connections don’t have to be made intentionally. Some obviously are, but it could also just be that the ideas are there and they have felt inspired and this might leak through as it’s something they think about unconsciously.

If you want, you can see this as an example of how you can create an analysis and connections where there might not be any if you just look hard enough.

Taehyung obviously loves Spring Day a lot, and Jimin does too. It might seem weird to make a Vmin analysis out of Spring Day, but I just felt there was enough surrounding things to talk about. Even if they might be coincidence I do personally think they fit it very well with the other song theories I have made, and I have even mentioned Spring Day a few times before. I am going to talk mostly about connections that Taehyung has made and how he seems to use a lot of similar themes and references, but also things possibly connecting Vmin and Spring Day.

There is a lot to keep track of, and I might have to repeat things a lot as I go through their songs, but I hope you’ll get a sense of the connections and how many there could be. So let’s look at Spring Day and their other songs with a Vmin perspective.

Let’s get started, because this is going to take a while.

1 - Lyrics and theme of Spring Day

Let’s start with the lyrics of Spring Day, which are quite poetic and use a lot of metaphors in true BTS fashion, yet paint the narrative of a rather complex relationship of love and hate. The song is partly directed at “society” and is meant to comfort and is also a song about grief and loss and longing, and I urge you to look up the inspirations and symbolism behind the song as they hold a lot of meaning.

That being said, I again want to emphasize that this analysis is not about the intended meaning of the song, but rather the things I see from Vmin towards this song, so I won’t go into the actual inspiration much. Basically, it’s the opposite perspective than song analyses I might do on Vmin’s own songs where I speculate about inspiration for the song, as this time I mostly focus on inspiration they might get from the song.

The person is longing for this other person and wants to go to them and hold their hand. I also think it’s possible the perspective changes either between two people or over time, as the first verses will be about asking questions like “How long do I have to wait” while by the end it has turned into “If you wait a little” and “I’ll come for you” etc. The person in the song has gone into action, actively going to the person they long for, asking them to wait for them specifically rather than just asking how long they have to wait and asking them to stay, which I will come back to later on.

Let’s go through some of the lyrics I think matters for this Vmin perspective in particular, which first off is the use of friend. Spring Day is not really a romantic song, but it does focus on the very strong feelings between friends and how they want to be together and how they miss each other. They are using the word longing here so I say it’s rather intense feelings they are having, and they clearly struggle with being separated. Something is keeping them apart, no matter if it’s their differences or just a falling out etc. once again doesn’t really matter. We only have to look at the broader theme of these friends going through a difficult time, longing for each other, wanting to be together and waiting for each other. We can see why Vmin might relate to the lyrics as the song is on the surface level about missing your best friend.

A theme that has been used by BTS and Big Hit (just look at TXT songs) many times is the way winter represents a difficult and sad period while the spring they long for is the end of such a period. We even know that BTS have used winter to describe the current Covid situation and hoping for winter to end.

Spring and winter are used the same way as night and day as they say “No darkness, no season is eternal” and there will be better times again with “the morning will come again” and the arrival of spring. These times will surely come, and in this song these friends are waiting for that time when things will be better, when they finally reach each other. They want winter to end, and it’s difficult, but they know it won’t last forever. They want to reach each other and one is urging the other person to wait for them and be patient, basically comforting them.

The snow falling represents the longing and distance of these two friends being separated, while the idea of it maybe being cherry blossoms falling represents the hope of this longing coming to an end and the two finally getting to be together in spring.

I think if we consider a hidden relationship we could see the longing, the separation and the wish to reach spring and better times in the way these feelings are portrayed in Spring Day no matter the original intent. Perhaps in particular for Vmin because of the theme of Best friends as well.

They long for each other and we know by the end of the song the choice is to be together again. They are enduring these hard times, this winter, until the end so that they can finally be together when the morning or spring arrives. It’s not yet, but they are going to be together.

With the theme of winter in August and waiting for the winter to end l also want to point out that the line “It’s all winter here, even in August” is inspired by the movie Christmas in August, a classic Korean romantic drama. Which suggests the song has a romantic reference. Secondly because some of the self written songs where Taehyung references winter and even Spring Day directly could be read as romantic it's possible that despite Spring Day not being explicitly romantic the feelings, interpretation and parallels from Taehyung still could be. It is after all about feeling like this about another person, longing for someone they want to be with though it’s difficult, and whether those feelings are romantic or not in the original content matters less than how we might read Taehyung’s own works.

The most prominent themes to look out for in Spring Day are Winter/Spring (and also warm/cold), Night/Day and then the longing or asking someone to wait or stay.

So that’s generally what I think we can feel from the song’s lyrics and theme, but there are a lot of specific lyrical lines that I find interesting because of how Vmin have talked about each other and especially also used some lines in their own songs. More on that later.

2. Choreo and MV

I wasn’t sure I should include this category, because out of everything it should be taken the least seriously and it’s not much. Everything that comes from Big Hit and not the members themselves have too many possible reasons to happen for me to think it’s done on purpose in a “Vmin narrative”. I rather not stray too much into things from Big Hit for theories as that would basically mean Big Hit is in some way helping in the “Vmin agenda” through secret clues, and I just don’t see that as very likely. But since there are a few things that do connect Vmin to Spring Day from the company I felt I should briefly mention it. Especially since it has further allowed Vmin to make the song their own in other ways. More than the original content having meaning I think the things Vmin has done after are more interesting.

The obvious which is from Big Hit is the choreo and the MV and I am not saying this means something, but we do have Vmin in particular being the two reaching for each other in the choreography. The choreo is also kind of playing into Vmin being these two people of opposite sides reaching for each other but never being in sync. In total there are three points of Vmin interactions in the choreo. Reaching for each other, one setting and the other rising, and Taehyung helping Jimin up from the floor.

Most noteworthy is the two of them reaching for each other as they are turned to face each other (while the other pairs are moving the same way they do not face each other.) Vmin are literally reaching for each other just as the lyrics talk about.

We also have Jimin going towards Taehyung and them switching places (one rises as the other one goes down, something I mentioned in my Taehyung and Jimin - Yin and Yang theories).

And lastly Tae is the one to help Jimin stand, so they do have quite a few interactions in the choreo, but I don’t really think it’s very significant. But they do reach for each other and go towards each other and hold hands so there are a few moves fitting the lyrics.

I also think it might be interesting to note that both Jimin and Taehyung at different points in the choreography are comforted by Jin.

Then in the MV we have a focus shot on Vmin sleeping together while Tae sings about the sleepless nights.

We also possibly have Jimin being in spring and Taehyung being in winter in the MV, and they are the only two with locations not shared with anyone else; the train station and the beach. Again, I don’t want to put much meaning into this, but want to mention it to have all Vmin and Spring Day connections covered.

“I’ll be there to see you (I'll go there to meet you)”

I also personally like that out of all the members it seems only Jimin and Taehyung are walking around aimlessly in their scenes. As I said, the snow and the ocean and their clothes might also possibly reference one being in spring and one being in winter, or them being at different sides of the world. Seperate in some way be it in time or space. It might even be the small start of the Yin and Yang theme we can find between Vmin later, just like the connections in the MVs between Serendipity and Singularity and their small part in DNA.

There are some small cute moments from behind the scenes of making Spring Day/The album photoshoot too, but not really anything that stands out as significant (unless you are on board with the ARMY is a codeword theories).

We also have small things like Spring Day being used as the background music in edits, as when Vmin speaks about the letter in Hawaii for example, but mostly I just wanted to include the choreo and MV moments I felt were necessary to mention.

So, in short there are some small things that are nice moments that come from Big Hit. However, what is the best part of this is the way Jimin and Taehyung have at times gone along with it and done more to make Spring Day feel like a Vmin song at least by association to some nice moments.

From concerts the most noteworthy example was when Jimin changed the choreo three days in a row. The first likely being an accident, but then doing it on purpose the following days. He walks up to Taehyung and during the last day Taehyung is already upright and waiting for him. (video)

You also have Taehyung kneeling and singing to Jimin when he was too hurt to dance. And the smile after is not to be ignored.

Then there was 5th Muster where Tae requested the song, and Vmin then went and slow danced to it. This moment alone has made many Vminies feel Spring Day is a Vmin song.

In the ON:E online live concert we also got a small moment between Vmin in Spring Day, when Tae sings “You know it all, you’re my best friend” Jimin walks up to him and puts his mic in front of Tae.

There are of course many other small interactions like this over the years and through various Spring Day performances, but of course small interactions likely don't matter much.

There is also a somewhat interesting moment from BTS’s performance of Spring Day at the Dear class of 2020. Jimin and Taehyung are sitting apart, but playing up the fanservice with Yoongi, Jin and JK who are next to them. It seems like they are watching each other and playing some kind of inside joke throughout the performance. (video)

Watching the clip it also seems like Taehyung is mouthing 보고싶다 (bogoshipda), which means “I miss you" in Korean, making Jimin smile. Maybe he does it to Jimin or maybe just to sing a long and Jimin found it cute.

As a bonus you should also check out the Lovely version of BTS's dance practice for Spring Day. It includes Tae being extra and Jimin not being able to keep his eyes off of him, Tae teasing Jimin with Lie choreo and a butt slap. (video)

So while there are some interesting moments between Vmin to be found, the amount of Spring Day performances will of course lead to some interactions that might just be small things they did for no special reason. Even so, I think they are cute and enough if a Vminie wants to associate Spring Day as a Vmin song just because it’s sweet.

3. Taehyung’s (and Jimin’s) love for Spring Day

I also need to bring up how much Taehyung loves Spring Day, and how he has talked about this song. Personally I think it’s pretty clear this song is special to him, though it doesn’t have to be any big personal reason, he might simply love the song and the MV (like so many of us do).

Still, he really seems to love it more than many other of their songs and has expressed it quite often. When IDOL won Best Music video Taehyung did something funny and said the MV for Spring Day is his favorite, and honestly I can’t blame him, it’s such a good video.

Noteworthy is how Taehyung has chosen Spring Day as his favorite title track, and in particular the end of the song that is in the MV version, which has the instrumentals and mostly Jimin walking alone. Taehyung talked about this on weverse as recently as in January 2020.

He could have just said Spring Day, but he did pinpoint a moment in the MV, which is when Jimin is walking alone, looking into the camera and holding the shoes. This part of the MV makes him tear up even three years after the release, and I think it says a lot. (Though to be fair it could also be because of Spring Day being the ending song of their Wings concerts and they play the instrumental then.)

Jimin as well has chosen the MV as his favorite, but honestly I think a lot of people would.

More recently Jimin also picked Spring Day as a memorable song for him. And I think that Jimin and in particular Taehyung are probably the members that have mentioned Spring Day and their love for it the most.

Jimin also piped in and told us Spring Day is Taehyung’s favorite song, right away thinking about Taehyung as they brought up Spring Day in Immortal Song (2020). ((332) (ENG SUB) BTS 인터뷰 10분으로 압축했다.zip [불후의 명곡 전설을 노래하다] - YouTube)

It's just more proof how Tae loves the song above others, and even to the point where Jimin seems to associate it with Taehyung.

Taehyung also said he thinks the song is even better and more fitting for winter. Honestly I kind of agree, as the lyrics are set more in winter and the spring is what the people long for and wait for. I simply bring this up because the settings Taehyung uses in his own songs are almost exclusively in the winter so it’s interesting he also thinks Spring Day is more of a winter song.

In the Dynamite countdown live Taehyung chose the song for his recommendation and told us the song still makes him tear up. It is evident Taehyung loves the song and still thinks about it.

We can conclude it’s an emotional song for Taehyung that he likes a lot just by hearing the way he talks about it. I have no idea if he just really likes it, or if he feels he can personally relate to it, but what I do know is that he has used Spring Day a few times in various ways when making his own songs. The fact that he loves it could mean the connections to Spring Day are a sort of homage, but might not have much deeper meaning. Thinking he has been inspired is not too far fetched as we know he has used the song in some way for his own releases, we just can’t know why he has chosen to make some of the connections.

In part 2 I will start going through lyrics and themes in Vmin’s songs that can be connected to Spring Day.

what really inspired the babe music video though...

So if you’ve read my babe mv analysis you know it’s one of the world’s loudest and best gaylor proofs in existence. What I want to explore here however is why 5-6 years after Swiftgron was over, is Taylor digging up the grave another time to drag her ex.

Seriously stop and think about it. Why on God’s gay earth did Taylor decide to Swiftgron her ass off in 2018. When she’s supposedly moved on to the London Lover and happy? The simplest explanation is that Babe is about Dianna so Taylor made sure people knew that. And hey that’s completely possible.

However it’s Christmas and I’m feeling generous so buckle up for some crack and reaching. (read: this is mostly a joke post so don’t come for my neck for playing around and making it. if you don’t like it don’t read✌️)

What if Taylor painting herself as the desperate other woman in this music video all about Dianna has a meaning further than it just worked out like that? What if Dianna was cheating on Winston with Taylor in a late stage illicit Swiftgron affair 👀👀👀???? (no I don’t think IA is about dianna, she doesn’t take runs)

Taylor said herself that “the narrative is never truly over” about her and Dianna so right after she and Karlie broke up why wouldn’t we expect a Swiftgron fling:

Babe was released in late spring of 2018 so let’s try and pin down when this Swiftgron tomfoolery could have taken place...

We know Dianna was in London at the beginning of 2017 (with Carey Mulligan no less, a friend of Taylor’s!)

Thanks to @swiftiesleuth‘s (who is probably going to make fun of me for this theory but THAT’S FINE W ME) realistic Kaylor Timeline we know Taylor was hiding out in London at this point in time as well:

3 January 2017 - Taylor diaries that she’s “essentially based in London” and that “we have been together and no one has found out for three months.” (This could be three months with Joe from September 28 OR three months from Tily’s Halloween party. Either way, not Karlie).

8 January 2017 - Taylor and Zayn film the I Don’t Wanna Live Forever MV in London.

So the question is, can we build a theory about Swiftgron having a late stage affair simply because they were in the same city at the same time? Well if Kaylors can claim Kaylor got engaged solely because Taylor was not papped while Karlie went on vacation then I say YES! Tis the damn season!!!

Let’s look at social media clues. Dianna seemed to be in on Rep promo. You want proof? Well what else could she have meant when she posted a photo captioned “please don’t eat the daisies” a few months after the London affair. We know Karlie called Taylor daisy so perhaps social media criminal mastermind Dianna “queen of shade” Agron was trying to humiliate Karlie because Karlie smirked at her at that fashion show in 2015:

Emboldened by her own crimes she then flexed her insider knowledge of Rep promo by posting video of her singing on instagram with the caption “Zombie Love” a mere three days before Taylor appeared in the LWYMMD music video dressed as a zombie in the OOTW (a song about Dianna) dress. Why is Taylor a zombie in specific outfit? Because Swiftgron is back from the dead of course:

Not only that but in the music video she buries the Taylor in the met gala dress from 2014. She attended that met gala with Karlie. RIP KAYLOR LONG LIVE SWIFTGRON!??!?

This happens in Feb 2018 a mere matter of weeks before babe is dropped as a single.

We of course know Dianna admits to her own commitment issues on instagram two days before Babe drops but what if she is referencing her commitment issues not with Taylor but with her husband Winston because she is cheating on him with Taylor at this point in time or did some time in 2017???

Taylor releases babe and then later the music video seeming to be screaming to the whole world that yes she is cucking Winston Marshall and she wants you, your mom, and your cat to know about it!

So in summation, perhaps Taylor is referencing Dianna so much recently because they hooked up more recently than 2013 and that’s why Taylor paints herself as the other woman in the Babe mv and has become obsessed with adultery lately. Because maybe Dianna was cheating on Winston with her 😌😌😌.
