Steven and Rose Quartz Redesigns

They’re both pink now.

- I gave Rose Pink Diamonds color pallet. It always bugged me when other gems shapeshifted they’re colors stayed the same but when Pink did, her colors completely changed. I also thought the color change added a bit more of an uncomfortable feeling to this scene in Rose Buds -

- I changed Rose’s dress to a crop top and dress. I thought it gave her a more earthly vibe -

- I added some sleeves to roses top with the Crystal Gem Star. I just thought it looked nice -

- I added an ombré pattern on the bottom of Rose’s skirt and shortened it a bit -

- I gave Steven a star patch where Spinel’s injector goo burned through, I thought that could show that it’s been some time since the events of Steven Universe: The Movie -

- I made the star on Steven’s shirt and his pants a bit lighter. They didn’t seem to fit the rest of his color palette that good -

- I gave Steven earrings. They look cute so -

i don't know why but i always thought the steven guy's surname was universe so the fact that he has a full name comes as a surprise to me

universe IS his surname but he has a very long full name. quartz is because his mom's name was rose quartz. diamond is because rose's REAL identity was pink diamon. however, him having cutie pie and danger as middle names was a throwaway joke, where steven says "danger is my middle name" and garnet says "your middle name is cutie pie" only to then ACTUALLY be his middle names. I do not remember why demayo is part of his name but it's been pretty long since i watched the show

Day 7: Journey's End

Reunion

Laughter fills the air as children run about, playing games of tag with each other and a few smaller gems. Sunshine with a few clouds and a light breeze makes for a beautiful, comfortable day. A perfect day for everyone to get together for their annual reunion atop the hill above the temple. They hold this reunion every year, always in the same place. Thank goodness they fixed the fence on top of the hill, and closed off the lighthouse. Some of these kids get a little too rambunctious for their own good.

Pearl smiles at the children running about, the adults chatting with various gems, and the overall peace and tranquility. They all worked so hard to earn this peace, and continue to work hard to protect and maintain that peace.

Her eyes, like always, are drawn to a few specific people. A child, short with a familiar smile, a young preteen with long limbs and unique pink eyes, and a young adult with dark skin and silky curls with pink highlights. The diversity of the group before her never ceases to amaze her, along with the sheer similarity they all seemed to bear to two particular people.

Two people who are the reason they all gather today, humans and gems from all over the universe. Hundreds of them all gathered to reconnect with each other and celebrate. Even the diamonds join in, cautiously sitting near the edge of the festivities, and are often used as jungle gyms by the children, thanks to the encouragement of Spinel. The parents would worry, but they've all known the diamonds their whole lives, and they know the diamonds wouldn't let anything happen to them.

Loading a plate full of various foods Pearl turns towards her fellow Crystal Gems. She walks over to join the group, and hands the plate to Amethyst who takes it gratefully. Garnet sits next to Amethyst, arm around her shoulder while she munches. Bismuth stands next to Pearl, wrapping a muscular arm around her shoulders in support, while Peridot and Lapis sit on the ground leaning on each other.

They all stand before a group of memorial gravestones. On one side is a large memorial statue of a lion sleeping. Next to it is a small unassuming gravestone bearing the names of Greg Universe, and Rose Quartz, with dates under their names and engraved with a small rose in the center. On the other side is another small unassuming gravestone bearing the names of Priyanka and Doug Maheswaran with dates under their names as well.

In the center is a slightly larger memorial gravestones bearing the names Connie Universe-Maheswaran, and Steven Cutie Pie DeMayo Diamond Universe. On top of the stone is a small stone house-shaped structure, protecting a bubbled pink diamond gemstone inside.

The crystal gems will never forget the day age finally caught up to Steven. He passed peacefully in his sleep, his gem never reformed, even when removed from his body. To protect him, just in case, White Diamond herself bubbled his gem. The bubble, clear and iridescent, allows them to see him clearly where they placed it upon his gravestone.

He and Connie both lived much longer than most humans, Steven outlived many, many of his descendants, and though they'll always miss them both, the gems know they're both at peace now.

After a few moments longer of mourning and remembering, and a few tears, the group returns to the festivities. Amethyst speeds off to roughhouse with the Famethysts, Pearl joins some younger family members in a game of volleyball with Bismuth, while Lapis and Peridot join a group of gems and humans chatting about various plant life found on other planets.

Garnet pauses before joining the others and turns back to the gravestone. Light shines across the diamond. Her visor reflects the light for a moment, a small smile plays across her lips as she turns and walks away to join the Universe Family Reunion.

Deception, the Diamonds, and the Truth: Steven Universe's family tree

Steven unsure what to think of his mom, as shown in the episode, "An Indirect Kiss" in Season 1

Steven Quartz Universe, the protagonist of my favorite animated series, Steven Universe, has a non-traditional family tree, although it is not affected by time travel and distortion as Philip Fry's tree is in Futurama. His family is unique but has some features of typical families. [1] Warning, that there are some spoilers about major plotlines in the show here, just a heads up.

Reprinted from my Genealogy in Popular Culture WordPress blog. Originally published on August 4, 2020.

Using various fandom pages, here is a rough chart I produced:

This chart leaves a lot of questions. For one, who are the parents of Greg's parents? They would be Steven's great-grandparents. Additionally, who are the parents of Doug and Priyanka? Who created Blue, White, Yellow, and Pink Diamond? Who are Andy's grandparents? And that's only the start. Technically, all four Diamonds are one entity, the Great Diamond Authority, but Rose/Pink is Steven's mother, who sadly died while giving birth to him, throwing the Crystal Gems (Steven's guardians) into a bit of turmoil. Due to this connection and the fact that White, Yellow, and Blue treated Rose/Pink as their child of sorts, they are basically Steven's grandparents, specifically his three grandmothers. Also, only a few of the couples on this chart are married, specifically the parents of Greg and Andy, while it is presumed that Doug and Priyanka, Connie's parents, are married. To be exact, Connie and Steven, former lovers Rose and Pearl, former lovers Rose and Greg are not married. Andy points this out rudely in the episode "Gem Harvest." There is another detail I need to talk about as well. The surname of Universe is one that Greg changed from Demayo. As such, Steven was born with the surname of Universe, and the middle name of Quartz. His full name, according to his fandom page, is Steven Quartz Cutie Pie DeMayo Diamond Universe.

The above chart misses a lot, however. Steven considers his guardians (Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst) to be his family, as he does with Connie, Lion, and his other Gem friends (Bismuth, Lapis, and Peridot) to be his extended family. As Steven's chosen family, as some people call it, they are definitely a part of his life, but with the chart in its current organization, the typical hereditary format, I'm not sure where to add them without creating confusion for the viewer. Perhaps if the chart had a different format, they could be included in their entirety. It also misses something else, the four beings considered his creations: Watermelon Stevens, Pumpkin, Cactus Steven, and Topiary Stevens. Since they come about from his DNA/Gem abilities, they can be considered his children. It's almost akin to artificial insemination, where, according to WebMD, a "doctor inserts sperm directly into a woman's cervix, fallopian tubes, or uterus."

Among other issues that complicate this is the fact of fusion, symbolic of relationships or friendships between two or more people. This almost completely operates outside the above-mentioned family tree, with a few exceptions: Steven and Connie form a fusion, while Steven and Greg form a fusion. Some people have shown them in a "fusion tree," while others put together a "fusion graph." Unfortunately, both are sorely out-of-date, with the fusion graph done three years ago. So, I made a new chart, with the Crystal Gems in the center, and not including Fusion Gems not tied to that core group. [2] Since Steven is half gem and half-Gem, he is a fusion himself!

This chart says a lot more about Steven's family and the connections they have together than the earlier one shown in this post.

Steven Quartz Universe is the titular main protagonist of the Steven Universe franchise. He is the son of Greg Universe and Rose Quartz, the only known hybrid of a human and a Gem and the first Crystal Gem of human descent. He has also started coming to terms with suppressed trauma that he has built up over the course of his years of adventures and near-death experiences with Gems.

At the end of the series, however, after holding his feelings in for so long culminates in him transforming into a giant Gem monster after coming to the conclusion that he is a monster himself, Steven's friends and family manage to get through to him with the power of love. In the months following, he decides to leave Beach City to go on a road trip on his own to see the world and find himself.
