Social media addiction among teens

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic increase in the use of social network services (SNS) by adolescents. In response to this rapid social change, scientists have produced a growing body of research on the impact of SNS on adolescent mental health and cognitive development. However, simple comparisons of time spent on social media with mental health and developmental indicators have been criticized as inconsistent and not based on accurate scientific evidence. Despite the importance of adolescents' academic performance and mental health in the context of the global pandemic, there is a lack of precise research to accurately diagnose the current situation, and there is a need for systematic, long-term studies that delve into individual personality traits and unique patterns of social media use.
Teen social media surge…inconsistent research on impact
According to a survey conducted by the Korea Institute for Child Policy Research, 66% of students surveyed said their media time has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Two out of three Korean teens use their smartphones for more than three hours a day. The most used feature was YouTube, which falls under the social media category. It is undeniable that the use of social media and media by teens has increased significantly during the pandemic. Adolescents' use of social media is known to have a greater impact on their mental health and cognitive development compared to adults. This is because adolescence is a time of heightened neurological, cognitive, and social development due to hormonal changes. Academic researchers have analyzed the effects of social media on adolescent mental health and cognitive development. However, inconsistencies in findings have been raised. Party Valkenburg, a professor at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, noted that some studies concluded a weak correlation between social media use and adolescent mental health in 2019-2020, while others suggested a significant association. The inconsistency in the literature stems from overlooking the individual characteristics of adolescents. Even within the same age group, differences in personality traits due to growth and environment can have different effects on social media. A 2020 study by Professor Ine Bayens of the University of Amsterdam and colleagues, published in Scientific Reports, analyzed 2,155 cases of adolescent SNS use and found that the relationship between SNS use and emotional well-being is highly individualized. Of the teens surveyed, 44% did not experience any significant change in their emotional development after a certain amount of time on social media. On the other hand, 46% felt positive feelings of happiness through social media, and 10% expressed negative feelings such as inferiority complexes. The researchers emphasized that the traditional approach of averaging results at the group level does not capture the individual, and called for a shift to personalized research that focuses on the individual.
Leverage personalization and longitudinal studies
To better understand the impact of social media on adolescent mental health and cognitive development, it is important to utilize research methodologies such as personalization approaches from neuroscience and developmental psychology. There is also an increased need to use technologies such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to observe changes in the brain in order to establish accurate scientific evidence. A research team led by Dr. Gertrud Junge from University College London conducted an analysis using fMRI to investigate the impact of prediction errors on self-esteem fluctuations in adolescents. Observing the brain's response to receiving fewer social media "likes" than expected could provide a more accurate picture of psychological states. As researchers continue to explore the complex relationship between social media and youth well-being, it is imperative that we bridge the gaps in our current knowledge and work towards a more nuanced understanding. By doing so, we can develop targeted interventions, establish strong guidelines, and create healthier digital environments for young people. Still, it’s important to a flashback that depression is treatable and there are ways to navigate the challenges and overcome the struggle.

One of the first ways in understanding and prostrating teen depression is by feting the signs and symptoms. Common signs of depression in teens include a patient’s feeling of sadness or forlornness, loss of interest in conditioning, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, and studies of tone- detriment or suicide. However, it’s important to seek help from an internal health professional, if a teenager is passing any of these symptoms.
Another important aspect of navigating the challenges of teen depression is creating a support system. This includes talking to family and musketeers, joining a support group, or seeking help from a therapist or counselor. Teens need to know that they aren’t alone in their struggles and that there are people who watch over them and want to help. In addition to seeking support, teens need to take care of themselves physically. This includes getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and engaging in regular exercise. Regular physical exertion has been shown to have a positive impact on internal health and can help to reduce symptoms of depression.
Another important step in prostrating teen depression is learning how to manage stress and negative studies. This can include rehearsing relaxation ways similar to deep breathing or contemplation, journaling, or engaging in creative conditioning. It’s also important for teens to learn how to challenge negative studies and reframe them in a more positive light.
Incipiently, it’s important to understand that recovery from depression is a process and it may take time. It’s important for teens to be patient and kind to themselves during this process and to flash back that lapses are normal. With the right support, understanding, and tone- of care, teens can navigate the challenges of depression and overcome the struggle.
In conclusion, depression is a serious internal health complaint that affects numerous teenagers. It's important for teens, parents, and loved bones to be apprehensive of the signs and symptoms of depression and to seek help if demanded. Mental Health. A topic that is still considered to be taboo in India but needs the most cognizance. When we talk of the mental health of teenagers and youngsters, we see that young people in India do not seek help for mental health difficulties due to widespread concerns about a lack of trust, peer pressure, or awareness of mental health-related services. Most of the time, they are unaware that they need assistance and instead place the responsibility on themselves.
In schools, there should be a focus on mental health. Although the National Adolescent Health Program has made adolescent mental health a priority for service development, school-based mental health services in India have mainly remained fragmented and limited, and are frequently ignored. A lot of teen suicides and self-harming cases are believed to have been greatly influenced by mental illness. And it is we as aware citizens that can remove this stigma from society.

Teens go through a lot of emotional and hormonal changes. They go through study pressure, and the difficulties of a changing body, and they face relationships and heartbreaks, it almost becomes a roller coaster ride. 
Surveys say that in India, 197.3 million individuals needed treatment for mental health issues. About 45.7 million of them had depressive illnesses, while 44.9 million had anxiety disorders. The only key to a successful course of therapy is early intervention and as an aware parent who knows the importance of mental health, you must keep a check on your child’s overall health. 
What Are The Common Mental Health Problems In Teenagers?
Parents need to be conscious of the typical mental health problems teenagers experience. Mood problems, such as various forms of depression, frequently start in adolescence. Additionally, nine anxiety disorders affect teenagers often. 
During the adolescent years, behavioral problems including BPD, OPD, and ADHD may also manifest. Eating disorders and severe insomnia can also be a part of mental health problems. Many children also go through bullying, body shaming, and peer pressure, which collectively lowers their self-esteem and make them feel negative about themselves. 
What Are The Probable Causes?
A child's mental health is greatly influenced by their home environment as well as their experiences in life. For instance, a kid who has undergone sexual assault or a significant traumatic event is more likely to develop mental illness. Children who experience love, support, and value at home may find it easier to deal with life's stresses, but these kids run the risk of developing mental health issues. 
It's not always possible to prevent a youngster from experiencing mental health problems in a secure home. The risk that a kid may experience mental health issues is also influenced by biology, genetics, and living circumstances. However, you can always try to keep a healthy and safe environment at home where the emotional and social needs of the children are met and they feel safe.

The first and foremost thing is to talk to him/her and develop a connection with them so they could share their ordeal with you. Can social media lead to or exacerbate mental health issues? In our experience and based on our research, it certain can, especially to those who may have a tendency to spend more time online and reduce their real, face-to-face contact with other folks. Over the past few years, researchers have studied the impact of social media addiction on various aspects of people’s lives and the end conclusions are all quite similar – the lack of social connection can pose serious risks to mental health and exacerbate pre-existing feelings of alienation, anxiety, and depression. In our most recent article we write about excessive social media use, particularly in teens, and why it can be harmful for their mental health if not properly monitered by mom or dad. From feeling excluded from friendships and activities, to the phenomenon known as "culture comparison", feelings of envy, needed to post the perfect response, jealousy, the need to immediately respond to everyone and to post that "perfect" image of themselves - teens who overuse social media platforms (which are created with addictive algorithms) are succesptible to serious issues of anxiety and depression. Chapter 34 of QUIETING THE CLOCK is a compelling, powerful story of a teen girl born with half of a heart called HLHS, along with 4 other Congenital Heart Defects. Her invisible disability consumes her life and destroys her mental health, with no break as she is abused repeatedly, some weeks every single night, for 11 years.
Modeling was one of her outlets, and gave her an ounce of self esteem, until Modeling Agents told rejected her due to her heart surgery scars and varicose veins.
Only a few local modeling stores allowed her to represent their clothing, and even then - had to be covered from head to toe and dressed so differently from the other girls, as in excerpt and photo below.
