i dont remember anyones names so this is gonna sound partly unhinged. okay so the edward norton playwright and jason schwartzman actor (not character, in the black and white parts) are lovers right. tbh i thought this was kind of a gag and forgot about it. but later we find out that the playwright died 6 months into the production. i didnt make the connection that THAT’s why the actor-jason has to suddenly leave the stage and freaks out backstage about how he’s not sure he’s Doing it right. hes not talking about acting!! because he himself is literally grieving his lover while he’s playing a character who’s grieving his wife written by his lover so obviously it’s too much!!! actor-jason is trying to find meaning in his death through his writing but there isnt any meaning in death [gerris drinkwater voice] which is what the play is trying to say anyway. he doesnt think he’s performing grief right even in his own life!!! (and tbh it’s the 50s so he wouldnt be able to perform grief publicly anyway!!!!) the play starts with a car accident… anyone would search for some hidden meaning there, some sign…. so when he talks to margot robbie outside it’s not really about finding the CHARACTER’s motivations it’s about the actor himself being able to process the playwright’s death! and adrien brody director was probably also dealing with that too (him and norton seemed to be good buddies) so the whole “sleeping backstage” thing gets a bit sadder maybe? maybe everyone else got this in the theatre and im just stupid lol but crazy making stuff to me!!! the whole story is about sublimated gay grief that cannot be expressed?!?!

the tweet that caught me onto this was here which posits that the playwright’s death was a suicide but i think that’s pretty stupid and unnecessary because the whole thing about the play asteroid city is that death is random and meaningless. im pretty sure that’s what the alien represents— a shocking and absurd event that isnt outright evil or menacing, not something anyone can predict or make sense of, it’s just a thing that happens to you out of nowhere, it doesnt mean anything. he’s a little black figure, he’s death! giving and taking! aagh

Lucifer’s Pact

When: Chapter 20-14

Where: Lucifer’s Office

Why: It felt right to them

Who Proposed the Pact: MC though Lucifer prodded it

The Proposal:

Lucifer: “…have you done all you set out to do here in the Devildom? No unfinished business? No loose ends?”

MC: “I still haven’t made a pact with you.”

The Response:

Lucifer: “A pact, you say? I see. You’ve made pacts with all of my brothers, which just leaves me… Do you really want to make a pact with me? Truly? Why: Supposedly this pact is suggested sometime before the TSL competition but through error—possibly a translation issue—the pact is never actually proposed in-game.

Who Proposed the Pact: It was likely MC who proposed as Levi seemed annoyed by the possibility of a pact.

The Pact:

Leviathan: “…All right, look. Here’s the thing. You remember why we decided to have that competition in the first place, right? It was to see who the bigger TSL fan was. And I told you that if you won, I’d enter into a pact with you. That Little trump card you pulled out was a real dirty trick… …but a promise is a promise, after all. It really kills me to do this…it makes my stomach churn. But, I’ll keep my end of the bargain. I’ll do it. I’ll make a pact with you.”

Satan’s Pact

When: Chapter 12-10

Where: House of Lamentation Hallway

Why: MC— to free Belphegor | Satan— respect for MC

Who Proposed the Pact: The first time, MC. The following times, Satan

First Proposal: *the first proposal is in response to Asmodeus asking MC who they’d like to make a pact with next*

First Response:

Satan: “If you want to make a pact with me, it’ll cost you. A lot. Though, if you offered me your soul in return, I might consider it…”

Second Proposal: *made by Satan to annoy Lucifer*

Satan: “…Good question. What are you trying to accomplish…? Hmm, well…I guess I’ll just have to help MC too, won’t I?”

Leviathan: “Wait, you’re going to have to explain that, Satan. Are you saying that…?”

Satan: “Yep. I’ll also be making a pact with MC.”

Satan: “Anyway, I know this isn’t the best time for me to ask this, but… MC, would you agree to a pact with me?”

Why: MC— to free Belphegor | Asmodeus— originally it was a deal but he wanted to after witnessing MC’s power

Who Proposed the Pact: MC vaguely proposed it but Asmodeus made it clear

First Proposal: *the first proposal is in response to Asmodeus asking MC who they’d like to make a pact with next*

First Response:

Asmodeus: “Yes, I’m not surprised you want me all to yourself. And I understand. Believe me, I do. All too well… Humans Just can’t help themselves when confronted with someone beautiful and alluring, can they? Oh, but just because I said I understand, that doesn’t mean you actually have a chance with me. Because I’m not the least bit interested in forming a pact.”

Proposal:

MC: “I could control you if you made a pact with me.”

Why: MC— claims they want lucifers respect but it’s really to help Belphegor escape | Beelzebub— believes MC will help him and his brothers make up

Beelzebub: “Uh-uh. No. Although, if you’d make sure I always had tons and tons of food—as much as I could eat—then I’d consider it.”

some observations from going down a rabbit hole of japanese language xigbar yesterday

keep in mind that this clip is just the japanese audio being played over the visuals from the english language release. the subtitles aren't a direct or literal translation of the words being spoken; they correspond to the localized dialogue that the english voice actors wouldve been given

hōchū ōtsuka (xigbar's japanese va) and james patrick stewart (his english va) give, to my ears, pretty similar vocal performances. this is the case for pretty much all of the characters ive seen so far in my xigbar-centric explorations (roxas's vas sound nearly IDENTICAL). the notable exception being xemnas, whose japanese va straight up sounds like he's trying to talk without moving his mouth

in the english dub cutscenes, the character animations often feel...floaty? disconnected? like, because they're not synced up to what the characters are saying and how, their gestures frequently seem random and unmotivated. in retrospect it's obvious that this issue wouldnt be present in the original language because that's the dialogue they would've been animated around in the first place!

now that im actually watching the character animation with the dialogue it was actually done for, i appreciate it a lot more. its so expressive. smiles.

at the end of xigbar's speech here you may notice him saying the phrase "tte hanashi." this is his japanese catchphrase! it means something along the lines of "so they say", "or so I've heard", et cetera. i love "as if" im a big fan of "as if" but i also love the idea of xigbar consistently undermining the information he gives and emphasizing how often he eavesdrops and spies on people.

he says "tte hanashi" very very often. multiple times in most of his scenes that ive seen so far. way more often than the english dub says "as if"

he doesn't say it normal like im pretty sure that's not how you say it in normal speech. like sometimes he does say it normal, but he always draws it out at least a little and often really draws it out, emphasizing it with some kind of gesture, like he does in the clip

seriously if there's a moment in the games where xigbar says something while doing a cunty little gesture he is probably saying "tte hanashi" in the japanese version
