Some in the Bridgerton fandom will paint Kate as being in an abusive family, paint Edwina and Mary (even Lady Danbury at times) as these villainous people who make her life miserable just to make Anthony and his family the "better choice". Like, ignoring how this trope of "villainous poc family causing the poc female character to run away into arms of a white family" is so terrible it also makes no sense when in reference to these characters themselves. Let's start with the Sharmas: we have Kate who is the daughter of a man who remarried and had a child of their own. Now, from that alone people just outright use this as a way to paint Mary in a bad light, making up the most outlandish things, when Mary admits very adamantly that she always viewed Kate as her daughter and has/will always love her. Why do you think she was so outraged by Kate being willing to accept the deal given by the Sheffields?
Now, on to Edwina. Some will hang that "half-sister" line over her head but won't give the same action to Anthony, or heck, even Kate (though she doesn't deserve hate like Anthony more so criticism for some parts). Now the line was wrong, for sure, but that doesn't mean Edwina wasn't in her right. Here we have a young girl who lost her father, is aware of her family's social and economic status, and is informed from the beginning that her finding a suitable match will either tip or support the balance of her family's lives. Edwina is literally entered into the show searching for a husband to help support her family, that's first, romance came second. So enter Anthony who, infront of her, is so charming and kind and even though him and her sister are fighting at times he still seeks her out. He's wealthy and promises to provide for her family, something that she wants. Only to find out that none of it was real, or at least, real towards her and that she was hurt in the process (by this I refer to the Sheffields ordeal and Anthony's whole attitude and his lack of respect for her). Like that's messed up and anyone would be upset over it, forgive a woman (more so a young woman in Edwina's case) expressing their feelings. Some of you want her to be Kate's cheerleader 24/7, and it shows. And Edwina was always ready to comfort Kate, from her (Kate) being detached from the world (during her wedding) to her supporting her (Kate) and Anthony being together, so let's not go on and say the Bridgertons would be better.
Now, on to the main family themselves, what we see of the Bridgertons in s2 isn't even that positive when you really think about it. From the beginning, when Anthony is looking for a wife with the most horrible standards, Violet, who notes that her son isn't looking for marriage for the right reasons and instead of trying to talk to him about it, instantly goes and states she's disappointed by his outlook and fears he won't be happy, confused as to why he's this way. BECAUSE YOU PLACED THAT WEIGHT ON HIM. Like I understand losing her husband was terrible, it was, but to then put all that pressure and weight on to your eldest and then become surprised when it starts affecting him in ways you don't like, while taking hardly any time to actually talk about his feelings, is laughable (couldn't think of a better word). Like whenever Anthony is around with valid points, she looks exasperated at times. And the other Bridgertons aren't better from Daphne literally pitying him (even tho she knew about his feelings for Kate and could have eased the situation instead of letting it go on) to Bennedict laughing at him at every turn to the siblings joking about the situation he put them in (which they themselves could have prevented but didn't & aren't affected as severely by like the Sharmas), it makes no sense how people would view them as better than the Sharmas.
Now on to Kate and how this view affects her. One big reason being is the fact that it ignores her insecurities, only paints them in a different light. Kate didn't view herself as Mary's daughter because her father had been with someone before he met Mary, long after she was born. She didn't think Mary would love her as a daughter and is surprised when she finds out that she actually does. Kate accepts the Sheffields deal because it will help Edwina, because she (Kate) understands their social and economic status and is willing to leave the only family she has just for them to be secure and happy. That's the reason she has turmoil, not because her family hates her and is abusing her! Like where did that thought even come from? Kate has issues of not expressing her feelings, bottling them up and trying to handle things herself until it blows over, that's it. And when she does express them, do you know who actively seeks to reassure her? Her mother and sister. They don't make jokes or make the environment able to express these emotions nonexistent (like the Bridgertons with Anthony), they try to help her because they love her.
Honestly, the Sharmas deserve so much better because if it isn't the show doing them dirty than it's the fandom.
[Quick edit because people were taking some things out of context, by sneaking behind her (Edwina) back, I was referring to the whole Sheffield incident because, when it's revealed, it literally put her, and her sister and mother, in an awkward position and makes her and her family look like bad people, especially in front of the Bridgertons. I reworded my original post and added context, and admit I could have worded it better, but for those who saw it as me immediately trashing Kate's character, I will state here that was nowhere near the intent and never was, sorry for the slip up]

A Truly Diverse Bridgerton Cast
Okay so full disclosure: I first made this fancast list for a Kathony fic series I had written and because it was about a traditional Indian love marriage between them, I made all the Bridgertons Indian. I have unfortunately since abandoned that fic so please don’t send asks about it! However, my friends and I have been talking and been really upset that people have been calling for a white Sophie and how after Sophie (hopefully she’s WOC) we won’t ever see another WOC lead until Lucy and we don’t even know if S5 to S8 is happening.
So I present the Fancast of Spite, brought to you by the Kanthypants & Eldest Daughters GC and especially my wife @sophiamariabeckett for encouraging me to post this!! [Also better viewing on mobile because the app resizes the photos to be the same size for you!]

My dearest friend,
As promised, I would write to you when we were settled and we very much are. Edwin, Kate and I have made a home in Chennai, where his family are from. They are the kindest, most welcoming people. I was afraid his mother would be like mine, but she hugged me tightly and welcomed me. I have felt more at home here than I did in Hertfordshire.
I am with child. That is why I am writing this letter, to share this most joyous news with you. I am hoping for a boy, but Edwin believes we will have another girl. Kate is excited - she follows me everywhere and would really like a sister. I visited her mother's grave yesterday, to pay my respects and let her know that I will take care of Kate and Edwin, but will not let them forget her.

Okay, I just read like a billion posts about season 3 and all that, and now I've been rewatching season 2, and like … I'm so confused.
I feel like season 2 sets up that Colin is selfish and childish and Penelope has some growth to do, which makes sense because they're not supposed to get their story for a while. Penelope needs to LONG for Colin for their story to work. Colin needs to grow up and stop being the younger brother with a pseudo chip on his shoulder than thinks self-growth is liking himself more and becoming independent of his loving family/friends while also boring them with his own assumption that his own thoughts/stories are Really Super Awesome.
And like, meanwhile, Benedict is actually fun in this season? And seems to lack a sense purpose? I actually haven't read his book because I wanted to experience is first AFTER season 3 as I did with books 1 and 2, but from what I understand, Sophie is just ... really good for this man? And I just feel like he's just at a good place for his season.
As I'm watching this, I remember a lot of the Penelope and Eloise and Colin moments toward the end of the season (I'm not quite there yet), and I do remember feeling they were kind of shoved in.
Were they shoved in?
Further, this wreaks HAVOK on the timeline because, like many authors of longer series, the books are paired up. So 1, 2, and 3, then 4, 5, and 6, and then 7 and 8. If you mess that up.
The choice to have Colin and Penelope's story up next is probably because the show wishes to further distance themselves from the source material, which means they'll do whatever they want. But I feel like the main reason they've done this is because they can easily fix Benedict up if with someone random if they need to, toss the younger three to the wind, and patch up something for Eloise in another season ... and the average fan will be fine with that.
And I don't know if Shondaland wants to do all eight seasons. I think they might try to do four and leave the youngest three and Benedict where they are as unnecessary side characters who just *exist.*
Which breaks my heart because the idea of a large family all having their individual romances really is fun.
Also, they did such a good job (imo) improving on season 1 with season 2. I guess it's just too much to ask that they keep going?
I don't know. This is a random ramble from a casual fan who really just loves Kate/Anthony and Francesca/John/Michael and is otherwise kind of unaware of the stories. I've never really cared about Colin and Penelope because they're just a different vibe from things I care about. Also, I'm a writer, so I always dislike other writers in fiction. (Yeah, I get called out by 'em.)
I don't know. I just want it to keep going for eight seasons. I don't really care what the show contains, though I'm sure I'll like it less if it doesn't make sense. But I hope it keeps going.

Bridgerton, ahistorical or fantasy?
bridgerton fits under the fantasy genre imo, it’s not just regency, romance or historical fiction. The original books having all white characters and the show adaptation having a ‘diverse’ cast really muddles things. I was talking to my friend about this and having poc in these roles and including real historical figures like Queen Charlotte set the show up to fail it’s poc cast. I wish CVD had left queen Charlotte’s potential distance moor ancestry as inspiration only, a fictional queen Colette or Caroline could have avoided some awkwardness. Is it an alternate timeline? Is it historical fantasy? Is it both? Most people think of fantasy as dragons and magic á la Game of Thrones but as a Black woman since watching season one I’ve always considered it fantasy the show is certainly fantastical! A Black British queen, poc aristocrats *gasps*! Is this a failure of imagination on my part? Maybe? I watched and loved Still Star Crossed and didn’t struggle to suspend my belief despite the makeup of that cast poc nobleman and all.
I was talking to my Desi friend recently about the show and she was like “what would 19th century India look like in the Bridgerton world” We don’t know because they haven’t attempted depicting it (yet). It’s seems too pedantic to mention this but do they dodge colonialism, can they? How would they depict India in a show about British high society without invoking colonialism? Class and birth standing is already a big thing in the show that already feels caste adjacent. Kate’s standing due to her ‘quality’ of birth is a major part of her character…In the books which I haven’t read 😅, I believe Anthony sits as peer in the house of lords, in the show he is married to an Indian woman. I don’t see how they successfully implement that storyline into the show, they’ll probably try to though. I’m not Indian or South Asian so I do want to her other peoples more relevant opinion on this. With Bridgerton there’s a vagueness when addressing certain things, we got that “love cures all” (all=racism) line from Lady Danbury to Simon which I hate, the Queen Charlotte prequel is going to have a challenge tackling that.

It would have been interesting if they had the Sharmas move back to England when Mr Sharma passed away. Then like the books, have them set up in Somerset. Have some strained relationship with the Sheffields that only improves when Edwina is named the diamond of the season. Maybe they gave Kate some unattainable thing like — they will only support her if Edwina is named the incomparable too and she is! And Kate is assured her family will be cared for only if Edwina marries someone of nobility. So basically, their demands keep changing till it comes to a head at that dinner.
More importantly though, it would have been interesting to see Kate, despite coming back to and living in England for the past 8 years, just working towards the goal of settling her family and heading back to India. Chasing home. She had spent her formative years in India only coming to England for a short time whereas Edwina would be the opposite.
I mean in the show, Kate is the one that lived between India and England (at least for a short while) before heading back to India then coming back to England. Edwina on the other hand loved her whole life in India. That was Edwina’s first trip and she took to it like a fish to water and for Kate, it wasn’t her first stay in England. I get how they wanted to send this whole theme of - what is home? To some extent, they succeeded. Still, I think if they had them living in England for the past 8 years (outside of the ton), it would have made her heading back even more intense because everything she currently had was in England but everything she ever had up to that point was also in India. And it would have made more sense that Edwina and Mary would be like okay bye, this is the home we know then pushing for her not to go. Or asking her what she would actually be retuning to? That sorta thing.
It also would have explained the accents and they could have explained the differing phrases and terms of affection as the Sharma sisters being polyglots and just pushing themselves to do the most (because I swear I know people that do that to themselves because it keeps their practice of the language fresh). Also, I am not saying that to be dismissive or saying I’m totally cool with patchwork representation. I just understood (not condoned) why it was done and I think this alternate idea could have been a better explanation instead of all this random explanations after the fact but that’s just me!
BUT also, it was hella confusing because we know that Kate took over the running of her household and the raising of Edwina. Saving and budgeting with Mary (when she finally was ready to do that) what the family had. Struggled for 8 years before finally returning to England. Yet I have so many questions — did Kate and Mary get work with the royal family? Did they leave and go to other cities to find work? Lady Mary had to have eventually found work yes? Or was that all Kate’s responsibility? They weren’t land owners like the Bridgertons so what did they do? Were they really just living on savings for 8 years? It makes sense to have stayed in India where they had an established life and improve their prospects instead of returning to England penniless. SO I GET THE SHOW’S TAKE. I just wish they spent more time carefully fleshing it out.

In case you missed the first poll, I am doing a ficlet for Kate Week Day 1 and yall can help me pick my names for her parents!
Part 1: Pick Mama Sharma's Name!
Tumblr media
Mikesh means a companion or an associate. Since Miles is named after his grandpa, I also have called him Keshy in previous fics because Neddy and Keshy is adorable!
Madhavan is a derivative from name Madhu which means Sweet, one of the many names of Lord Shiva. (Grew up watching an actor with the same name and it's a hot name!)
Mohan means fascinating, infatuating - a nickname of the god Krishna. (Kinda self-explantory, Sendhil Ramamurthy eho plays Mohan on Never Have I Ever is my FC for Papa Sharma lmao)

I love you hated female characters. I love you female characters who are flawed. I love you female characters who mess up and try to do the right thing after. I love you female characters who get the undeserved vitriol from fans. I love you female characters who fans completely condemn because of one mistake they made. I love you female characters who fans completely condemn because of one mistake they made as a child. I love you female characters who people blame for ripping apart their ships instead of the larger forces that be. I love you female characters who get all the hate as the male characters who do worse in canon get absolutely none. I love you female characters who get hated on because they told a man “no.”
