art thoughts lately!! particularly about con prep ..

- i am getting tired of drawing chibis during con prep season 😔 like i mentioned before, i think im "good" at drawing them, but they are kind of uninteresting to draw. and i get bored after a while! i think that's why charms burn me out so fast. luckily my last "specialty" merch design was just submitted so . i can move on to prints and other designs now

- i still like designing charms but i think i might try portrait charms. which means that like . my charm catalogue will cover a less broad range of fandoms (?) bc portraits will take a lot more work + harder to draw characters i don't know well

- might also still do buttons bc i like the idea of having low cost options on my table (i.e. canadian con goers tend to have a lower purchasing power?) although i think i may have been under charging...... i might have to raise the price by a few cents, because again, they do take time to draw. i put unnecessary amounts of detailing in them . it sparks joy ok 😔 anything priced under like. $10 (?) will be a low cost merch option and i like the idea of still having my art be "accessible" and not just like. having $15-20 charms and prints

- i also want to lean more into like. stickers in the style of the baccano sheet i drew last year! i think it's a lot of fun to interpret a favourite series in this graphic design style. a lot of work and research but yeah

- i hate lineart again so it might be time to learn how to clean sketches again

- might also be time to crank out the chisel brushes again - whenever i see artists using the chisel brush it makes me miss my 2017-18 era art sm .... there's such a delicious flow in chisel brushes .. part of the reason i stopped using them is 1. i was getting tired of using the brush (though i think my 2019 art was a bit tame compared to the previous year), and 2. complications on my computer with photoshop and then having to move on to clip. i can't replicate the tilt sensitivity of my ps brushes (specifically the helen chen brushes) in clip ^__T so i had to learn to wield another set of favourite brushes. i know clip also has chisel brushes but this one was my favourite aughhgh. will have to dive into the brush settings window for like 2 hours again ..

- overall, im really looking forward to stickers and prints the most! esp prints! i have a greater vision of what i want to capture in my art, after doing the Halloween piece and the pandora hearts twin mirrors piece. i want to push my art in a more illustrative direction (thank you miss shirahama kamome of witch hat atelier you have changed my life), if it works out. ill definitely have to toss the old prints that don't suit my style anymore, though ill see about doing a "last call" to see if anyone wants em during anime north 🤔 if not they will be recycled hehe

I really adore this zine. It is just unbelievably cute and is just exactly what I could hope for in a Chuunosuke/mascot zine. Capcom really popped off when designing these little guys bc I am so obsessed with them. I love how there's a mix of the mascots replacing the human characters. I also just love how the personalities are exaggerated that makes the mascots so distinct from their human counter parts. An overall amazing zine and I am so glad to have snagged a copy. TYSM to all the artists, writers, and mods, this is amazing!!

And last but certainly not least... here is the information about applications for Merch Artists!

One of the great parts of this zine is the Merch, and you (yes you!) get to design it!

SO- if that sounds like something you'd be interested in (applications open April 1st!), read below the cut (or check out our carrd) to find out what to expect!

General Application Rules

1. PLEASE tag your content!

The zine will be completely SFW and will not feature ships, but we understand some people may wish to submit ship art or content that might be less family-friendly in their portfolios.

All mods are 18+ but we don't want any surprises, so please describe your art in the boxes provided if required!

2. At least ONE of your pieces must be Gravity Falls themed or featuring Gravity Falls characters.

We would particularly like to see your work of Ford, Stan, Mabel, or Dipper, as the Pines family is the main focus of this zine!

3. Check your sharing settings!

If sharing a Google Drive folder link for your portfolio, please ensure your folder's sharing settings are set to 'allow anyone with the link to view. You can test this on an Incognito browser or a browser NOT logged into your Google account to make sure.

Mods will NOT be able to contact every person who makes this mistake to ask them to a new link to their portfolio and it is very likely your application will just be dismissed.

MERCH ARTIST APPLICATION GUIDELINES

1. Please submit 3-6 samples of finished work that best represent your style and ability. A “set” can count as one piece (for example, if you have 3 characters together in 1 sticker set, this can be counted as 1 of your 3-6 samples).

2. NSFW works will NOT be allowed in the zine (this will be a family friendly SFW zine!) but you CAN put them in your portfolio. 

If your pieces require trigger warnings, feature ANY ships, or feature NSFW content there WILL be a space for you to write this on your form and we expect you to do so. All moderators are 18+ but we wish to avoid any surprises. 

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding (and yes, this is in here twice because it's so important!)

3. We will judge pieces based on composition, colour and/or value, understanding of form and depth, and rendering.

4. If you have the desire to create a certain type of merchandise for the zine (for example, enamel pins, acrylic charms, shaker charms, sticker sheets, washi tape, etc) it is recommended to show work examples of those types of merch. It is NOT guaranteed that any artist will be assigned any specific type of merch.

5. All examples do NOT need to be merch “items”. Full illustrations or print examples are encouraged.

6. Only digital artists will be accepted for the merch artist position so please only submit digital samples.

7. You do NOT need previous experience with formatting merch to apply as a merch artist! Our moderators have some experience with this and will provide templates and specs to ensure your work is the correct size and resolution to send to the manufacturers.

So, I was originally supposed to go to the grocery store only yesterday, but Stiles and Derek wanted to tag along. And they wanted to look around at other stores, which led to some interesting discoveries! >>> Stiles was really intrigued by the Cheetos and Doritos bath bombs (FYI, they are actually orange and blue raspberry scented, and are are also Fruit Loops and Lucky Charms bath bombs in the bottom of the stack). Derek was not impressed, and I'm glad he also agreed with me that these sound horrifying and also WHY?! 😭 >>> Derek somehow found himself in a pool of Rubix Cubes (aka mints). >>> Meanwhile, Stiles wanted to pose with the Dundies (candies). Which Dundie would he get if he was part of The Office? Snarkiest Little Shit in the Office Award? 😂🏆 >>> Okay, so these dummies told me if I was going to spend some time looking around, I might as well treat myself. So, I did with face masks and sweets. YAY! >>> Look what Stiles found?!!! Lisa Frank sticker sheets! He definitely begged for me to snag these for nostalgia's sake, so yeah, I caved. Derek thinks they're tacky with all the rainbows vomiting everywhere. Also, I think he developed a headache from looking at all the stickers. >>> Sterek enjoying a sweet treat (aka an ice cream Chococat)! (I'm also LOLing about this adventure as many shots were undocumented since a. having them pose in a store was weird enough, b. I must have looked sketchy AF, and c. I got a couple of skeptical looks from people so I had to chose deserted areas selectively for the shots I did manage to get. I'm still sad I missed out on getting Derek and Stiles near the dog section...what a lost opportunity to make dog jokes. 😝🐶) Grocery shopping was uneventful, but Stiles did convince me to get a box of chicken nuggets, because heyyy, no one can say no to a damn good deal for a big box of homemade ones! 🍗 (Also, I am still a child, apparently) If you’d like to follow Sterek on more mini adventures, stay updated with the #stereksmolshots tag!
