Disciple and Hey Jesus
As anyone in the LGBTQIA+ community knows our narratives aren’t often told in books or music which is fine, not everything has to be about us. Sometimes though you want to be related to and it would be nice if there was something to feel understood. Which lead me to discover Steve Grand who is a gay musician from Chicago. I also found a gay Christian musician by the name of Trey Pearson, but that was by accident. Steve put out a new album called “Not the End of Me” which has a very intense song called “Disciple.” To me, it speaks to this intense draw toward Christianity, but also this revulsion to it because of the pain it has caused. Basically, a very toxic relationship which from what I’ve read, a lot of the album was about a mutually toxic relationship he had in real life. “Hey Jesus” is a song on Trey Pearsons EP. I thought these are relevant for me to post here because like Steve Grand’s song is like the emotional interplay between my queer and Christian identities, and Trey’s song is like the prayer life from that conflict. Listening to them if you’re part of the LGBTQIA+ and Christian community can be a great way to feel understood and if you’re not it can be a way to develop some empathy. Also warning, “Disciple” uses the word “rape” several times at the end.
