#tumblr cannot be monetized

Does anyone know if there's an external website, a bit like jetblackcode.com, which can show your top followers over a period longer than 1 month (ideally a year)?
I need to know who they are. For Reasons.

breaking: we can probably run ads in bad faith! this presents interesting opportunities; unfortunately, the moral cost of providing money to this site is probably too high
anyways i saw this

comment from the burger gallery: that picture is only slightly less unappetizing than an actual mgronalds burger. the bun looks fake as hell, in a realistic way

I will add my voice to the chorus that chronological feed is at this point one of Tumblr's biggest selling points, because chronological is a default form of ownership. I can edit my feed to match exactly my expectations by following & unfollowing who I want, because chronology as a concept is completely scrutable to me. Algorithms are fine as everything is an algorithm; its the lack of comprehensibility and agency most platforms inflict on you that makes them so hostile to users who actively curate what they engage with.
I in fact think Tumblr would benefit from more feed options! I would absolutely enable deviations from the chronology based on the people I follow and the moods I am in - but they again would need to be under my control.
The discoverability problem is real, and I do in fact think that there should be better ways. I don't object to the "you may also like" in the corner for example. In reality Tumblr's search functions are the place to do this; they aren't as bad as many claim but they aren't great, they are exactly the choice-focused place to surface new blogs. Make that tool better and I will find others like me and give them a shot.
But. Another thing that makes tumblr great is the fact that it is 'community' based over 'content' based. I follow the people I follow, and they follow me, because we interacted with each other over time. It is a facsimile of actual socializing; you make a few comments on a post, you build up the courage for a reblog or two, you are discoursing, you tag them on a meme, now you are mutuals. Content creators are not community members - that is a hierarchical relationship, the 'lead' and the 'fan', and is defined by parasocial and weak connections. Tumblr can be more than one thing ofc, I follow some art blogs who never talk to their followers, that is a content-follow. But in the main I don't think most people want their community-based feed structure to be disrupted by attempts to content-itize it.
This is again one of Tumblr's strengths - every other site (besides partially Facebook) has pivoted to content-style models over community-style models due to inherent winner-take-all dynamics and greater monetization applications. But Tumblr cannot chase YouTube, it is going to lose, YouTube already exists. I don't see much of anything in that post that recognizes that, and that is imo a huge mistake.

i do love the sentiment on neocities that calls for a more democratic web, untroubled by the aggressive surveillance and monetization of facebook, instagram, google, and yes, even tumblr. i do, however, find a slight inconsistency in the rhetoric, for it fails to account for the fact that the monopolization of the web is very much question a of colonialism, imperialism, nationalism, and land.
meta, alphabet, amazon, and apple actively exploit the neoliberal order to establish their monopolies on the backs of labourers in the third world and the imperial core, they command the largest server farms, i.e. they own the most land on which content on the internet can be hosted.
no amount of setting up hand-coded, personal websites is going to change that, choosing to host with a smaller company will not change that, for they too are beholden to the prevailing economic order; and until the neoliberal economic order is dismantled, smashed to smithereens, the world wide web cannot be democratized.

Hi all! We recently hit 10k followers on Twitter and are gaining traction on Bluesky. This is a periodic reminder to check us out over there and follow us if you haven't already!
Additionally, I'd really like to get this bot on a VPS soon and have the bot pay for itself since hosting funds ran out awhile back (DigitalOcean is quite expensive.) I hate to keep asking, but if you are able to, please consider giving a little. You can donate through CashApp Or, if you cannot, starring the repository on GitHub (yes, this is open source) would mean a lot to me personally. Promise I'll stop asking soon since I'm hoping the Twitter monetization revenue will kick in at some point.
Finally, I'd like to thank each and every one of you for following - not just in general, but Tumblr specifically. Out of all the platforms I have brought this bot to, it is Tumblr which has given it the warmest reception, and what motivates me to ultimately keep the bot up (and what caused me to bring it back.) I really am grateful for you guys. As a token of appreciation, I've decided to open up the ask page. I'm unfamiliar with how this really works (and Tumblr in general) but I'll try to answer some questions. In particular, I'd like to know about some things you'd want on this bot or things that are lacking - however much I can make this bot better for you. I realize that's a silly ask of such a meager bot, but who knows - perhaps I'm forgetting something important. In general, any feedback or input or even questions you have are greatly appreciated and I'll try my best to answer/implement whatever I get.
Again, thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. :D

Where are all the Audio Fiction Fandoms?
To be clear, this isn't me complaining, and I know, there are plenty of fandoms for audio fiction podcasts and the like.
But I have always found it weird how few shows get the big, self-sustaining kinds of fandoms, the ones where there's always at least a little trickle of fanfic and fanart. So weird, in fact, that I've been thinking about it on and off for the last 5-6 years, and I have a few theories I'd like to share with y'all as to why, and to see if I can't get some feedback from the audio fiction fans on Tumblr.
Theory 1: Audience Size
The first theory is mostly about demographics - fundamentally, a fandom has to be large enough to sustain itself, and only a certain number of audience members are going to become the kind of fans who make fan works, so ultimately, an audio fiction show needs to get popular enough before fan works start appearing.
There's plenty of support for this theory, of course - Welcome to Night Vale, Wolf 359, The Adventure Zone and The Magnus Archives are titans in the fiction podcast space, and indeed they have big fandoms. But, with that said, there's plenty of other podcasts that are just as big that don't have fandoms, so this can't explain it all.
Theory 2: Audience Distance
This one is similar to the first, but subtly different. A few creators in the space I've talked to have noted that they'd never make fan works of their friend's shows - that feels weird, like deliberately treading on their friend's work. They don't have this feeling when playing in big fandoms, or fandoms where they don't know the creator. This implies to me that fans need a certain level of distance from creators in order to feel comfortable playing with that fictional space. While this is less the case now with the fall of Twitter, a lot of shows, for better or worse, used social media as the primary pillar of their marketing, as well as using Patreons with special access as part of their monetization strategies.
In short, it's never been easier to get close to the creators of your favourite shows, and for smaller shows, the most exuberant fans - the kinds who might make fan works - are also the kinds of fans who will take those opportunities to get closer to the creators. In short, there just might not enough social distance for fans to be comfortable creating works, not at least until the audience grows sufficiently that a creator simply cannot be that close with their entire audience.
This theory I'm not so sure about these days - this one is probably a lot more dependent on the generation of fandom you belong to. Older generations of fandom are more likely to have this queasiness around creator closeness, because they were creating in a time where fandom was a shadow realm, desperately hidden from The Powers That Be, and "No Copyright Infringement Intended" was carved into fan works as an eldritch attempt at legal protection.
Theory 3: Audience Age
To be clear - there are fans of all ages out there. But it is clear to me that fandom trends young, and part of that is just the time needed to participate in fan culture - creating and consuming takes a lot of time, time that tends gets scarcer and scarcer as you get older (there are obvious exceptions of course - stay-at-home mothers have consistently been a major force in fandoms!). It's possible that audio fiction fans just tend to trend older, and thus don't have the time available to create and consume fan works.
Honestly, I'm not sure how relevant this one is - Audio fiction is becoming more popular with younger audiences and slowly shedding the "old fuddy-duddyness" that surrounded it when I was first getting into the space. And, ya know, there are audio fiction fandoms out there, so obviously either the youth aspect of fandom isn't a thing, or it is, but audio fiction audiences are still trending young anyway.
Theory 4: We're getting what we need!
A lot of academic discourse often focuses on the idea that fandoms create for a reason - and that reason is often to focus on parts of a fiction that the original text, for whatever reason, doesn't. The most obvious form of this is the many, many, many examples of ships and erotic fanfiction. You, as a fan, watch a show, see something between two characters, and get frustrated that the show isn't giving you more of that, won't make what is clearly obvious to you, explicit. So, you consume and/or create fan works that help relieve that tension instead.
Or, in shows where the focus is primarily on plot advancement or action, you feel a desire to get to know the characters better - you see the stirrings of these characters, you want to know them better, but the show just isn't the type of show to give you that slow, character-heavy scene/episode that you know would give you exactly what you need, so, again, you go consume and/or create fan works to fix that.
It's very possible that a lot of audio fiction is already built to give these sorts of fan audiences what they want. There's already romantic relationships, characters are openly queer, the nature of the audio medium means that character-heavy scenes are something that the medium directs creators towards, so there's already a lot of character engagement. So, for many fandoms, there just isn't much need to create fan works - there's no tension between what the show is and what it could be.
Theory 5: We can make our own at home!
One interesting theory is that one reason that people make fandom is because, fundamentally, the creators understand that they're not going to be making a film, or a TV show, or a book. They have creative urges, and they're not in a situation in life where they're likely to overcome the enormous barriers to entry in mainstream media, so, in combination with the stuff in theory 4, they play in other people's worlds instead. They know that there's already an audience who will consume their work (they're part of that fan community, after all!), so they can get that validation of creation without needing to create their own TV show or film or book, etc.
Podcasts, however, are different. Now, it's not true to say that podcasts have low barriers to entry - to create a podcast, there's a lot of skills you either need to learn yourself, or find collaborators with those skills. But, those barriers to entry are much lower than visual media. At the very least, audio production is significantly cheaper and less complicated for an equivalent runtime.
Better, podcasts have absurdly low barriers to publication - There are no gatekeepers to satisfy, no distributors you have to convince. Once your thing is made, pretty much no one can stop you from distributing that work. You don't even really need to pay for a podcast host - there's a few free podcast hosts now. So, once you've done the work, pretty much nothing stops you from publishing said work.
So... If you're a creative fan, who loved a show but thinks you can do better? Well, you can! You don't need to play in other people's spaces, you can be inspired by the podcasts you listen to to create your own original work, in the same medium and genre.
What do y'all think? Which of these feel right, which of these feel obviously wrong? Are you part of a audio fiction fandom? What does your fandom feel like to you on the inside? As a audio fiction creator, it's kinda hard for me to get into the inside of fandom culture, so insider perspectives would be super neat for me, so please reblog this to anyone you feel might have an interesting perspective on the whole thing!

So, I had finaly read the WD au after like, an year procrastinating, and it is amazing, but, there is something I keep wondering, keep in mind that I had read it all on Tapas, so I might not know if it is the case, but why dont you try working with the au? I mean, I dont know if you gaing enought from donations to sustaing yourself just with that, but it whould surprise me if you didn't, because your art is amazing and the story is even better, so, there is a reason you still work? That is, if you do, as I said, I only read the au trought Tapas, so I whould'nt know if you said thatbon Tumblr. English isbnor my first language, so sorry if I messes up some sentences or words, I love your au, have an amazing day! <3
Hey, thank you for your kind words!
The reality is, even with the very generous support of those people who subscribe to my Patreon, I simply Do Not earn enough money to live off of my art.
Most of my fans are kids, which means they don't have means to pay, or have to save their money for better things - and even those who DO read my comic and are adults are rarely able to/inclined to donate money. The comic is available for free on Tapas, after all. I don't want to paywall it - Patreon is entirely for perks.
Of my total followers on tumblr (not counting instagram and twitter follower count because there's probably a lot of overlap)...
...only 1.25% subscribe to my Patreon.
And I'm LUCKY for that number. That number is enough to allow me to work part time at my IRL job and devote a couple of days a week entirely to art. Which is great!
But WDAU is not MY comic. It's a fancomic based off of original material. I cannot/do not want to put it behind a paywall and sell it as a product. I can monetize some sketches and give people benefits through Patreon, but that's not the same thing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - The Love Vessel Needs Book Project
Alright, so @murderofcrow and I decided that a nice little FAQ is the key for answering your (possible) questions.
Let's go :)
• How can I submit my art/letter? Is there an address to ship it to?
Nope, there will not be an address. The answer to this will be: DIGITAL
Please scan your handwritten letter(s)/physical art; jpeg files can ruin the look when it is printed. In case you want to type something, you are allowed to do so. Send us a PDF file then (it makes things the easiest because of formatting the text, and it already the looks the way you wanted it to look like; same goes for digital artwork[s]).
For your submission(s) that Crow and I will receive, please write in the title your tumblr username and TLVN Book. For Vessel, you can write down your name/alias/tumblr username and the country where you are from.
Submissions can be handed in: Tumblr Direct Messages (Crow: murderiscrow, Lia: vesselsscarlet) or on Lia's Discord (Username: vesselsscarlet)
• I cannot write. I suck at it. Also, I am not artistic. What can I do?
Don't worry, we gotcha.
You don't have to be Shakespeare, Goethe, Schiller. You also don't have to be Monet, Van Gogh, or Picasso. It is all about conveying your message for him. In any way possible. You also don't have to worry about spelling mistakes, and messing up the tenses. We don't mind this. As long as Vessel can understand it in any way possible, you will be fine. This is you, this is your way of expressing your love.
• Is there a limit for the submissions? When is the deadline for submitting it/them?
Nope, no limit at all.:)
The deadline will be announced, as soon as we know more. But it will be 4 weeks before one certain live ritual which we will announce (follow the tag, so you will be updated).
• How can I make sure that I won't miss anything important?
Follow the tag. That is all we can say.
• Will the book be printed?
No. It is a physical one which we will craft and design with our pure hands. It will take some time because we are working from two different cities on it. But this will work.
• Will you share progress and the result?
Of course we will:)
You guys deserve to see our baby that you all have been a part of.
~
That is all for now. If you still have any questions, you can ask them in the ask tool. We will answer you asap.
Merry Christmas from the both of us.🎄✨️

Sam reacts to: Do NOT read these cards out loud - Dan and Phil play Incohearent
Full disclosure this is my second watch. My first one was me fighting for my life in my bathtub because I was laughing so hard and kept almost drowning.
- Dan affirming the phil trash #1 status by pointing out the quiff before any of us even had a second to notice it.
- Dan warned us they would get demonetized and YET truly nothing could prepare you for this video.
- Glad phil noticed, same as all of tumblr, that they keep mentioning swinging AND WHAT DO YOU MEAN SOFTLAUNCH DANIEL? (Which literally is just him saying they are a couple which thanks Dan)
- Dan already with the heart eyes, he is making the name heart eyes howell really proud lately (the heart eyes not leave for a single second the entire video).
- I think I have to join the "they smoke weed" agenda now because there is no other way to interpret Dan's cheeky smile at the 4/20 card.
- Literally what makes me laugh most isn't the cards bur Dan laughing? His smile is so infectious it makes me belly laugh seeing him grin at the camera, eyes all but disappeared and just leaning back in the chair holding his stomach from laughter.
- "Oh I wonder why!" THE LOOK DAN GAVE PHIL I AM CRYING
- The way there is no competition and they are just so excited to see the other say weird shit, especially now that we have 'new Phil'.
- Phil never giving Dan the hints is so fucking funny to me, like I think he doesn't do it intentionally and just forgets they exist lmao.
- Dan just wanted to play this to see Phil get flustered by saying kinky shit let's be honest, but in the end Dan gets more flustered over it than Phil does.
- "There is no way this is gonna be monetized." No shit sherlock
- The way they keep making eye contact 😳
- "I know there are certain words you cannot say on youtube" "We're gonna find them out today!"
- "Okay Phil this one goes out to you" - Power Bottom GENUINELY WHAT THE FUCK DANIEL WHO ASKED WHO THE FUCK ASKED (We know entirely too much about their sex life by now stg)
- I am afraid for their editors sanity after gamingmas I will be honest, because the same person has now edited so many of their absolutely horny videos and we're only on day 9.
- Dan leaning back in his chair when laughing is so funny in itself like I am worried every time he will fall off because he's laughing so much.
- I could feel Dan falling more in love with Phil with every single one these, like you could tell that he is down horrendously bad which is just adorable.
- I am with you Dan, I literally cried laughing.
No they are wrong we all WON, this was the funniest fucking video they have ever made I almost drowned, I cried, I can't stop laughing still. Thank you for this beautiful piece of media.

BTW in the unlikely event anyone was wondering, I own the physical editions of The Improved Emperor's Guide to Tamriel, Tales of Tamriel, and the Skyrim Library Box set.
All those books have art in them, some of which can't be easily found online.
I've already posted some of them from scans that already exist publicly, but in the event I absolutely cannot find a digital copy of art from those books, I will try to find a feasible way to get a scanned copy of the artwork to upload here. *I do not support digital piracy*
I post these images because I own the actual books already. To be fair, I do have a digital scan of the Morrowind art book, but that book is not in circulation anymore and is impossible to buy new.
To be clear, it is way way easier and less time consuming to simply use existing digital copies of the images instead of trying to do scans myself with low grade equipment.
Ideally, I will never need to make scans myself but I haven't taken a full inventory of what art I can find publicly online and what I can't.
This also applies to the "fair use" argument re: posting said artwork on here.
I own the books physically so I'm not trying to "steal" anything or violate any copyright. I have all monetization turned off on this blog and I actively reject the very concept of monetizing other people's art and work. This blog is simply for the TES community on Tumblr to appreciate official TES artists and their work.
I also own a Kindle edition of the brand new "Official Survival Guide to Tamriel".
I will not post any artwork of new books because I don't want to discourage sales of new books or spoil anyone on the artwork in them until a fair amount of time has passed and they have had a chance to read the book themselves.

re my lbr: it's so stupid that all the academic/studying/literary tags on this website are inundated with pictures of coffee and cafés. like yeah a lot of academics work in cafés and are addicted to coffee but c'mon just start a separate thing called cafécore or coffeecore or something. some of you really maybe don't like reading at all and maybe you should become one of those coffee bean enthusiasts and that's perfectly fine. i also think everything about the romanticization of academia/dark academia/etc is ridiculously stupid considering that academia is an extremely exploitative industry and anyone who has been in the education system should be thoroughly disenchanted with it and critical of the caffeine culture which perfectly illustrates how severely the people are overworked.
really a lot of dark academics on tumblr are just touting a nerdier form of grind mindset hustle culture. how is romanticising the drug addictions to nicotine and caffeine any different from finance bros or tech bros or jocks romanticizing cocaine or ritalin or steroids. depending on chemical substances to alter your brain because you physically cannot perform at the level you're holding yourself to (or being held to) is the perfect example of how patriarchal/hierarchical/capitalist cultures grind the lower classes into dust. note that i'm not talking about people who use these things responsibly to treat their disorders, i'm specifically talking about people who use substances to facilitate unhealthy 20 hour study/work sessions. stop glorifying being overworked & stressed out.
if you're a young adult or especially a teenager on these dark academia blogs please get out of that mindset quickly and realize that for a lot of people studying/work/output is just another form of self-harm/self-destruction. you should never tie your productivity or your grades to your self-worth. of course having good grades is a noble aspiration but there's also more to life and you must recognize that most educational institutions are not truly equal or just. seek accomodations if you need them, because any system that prioritizes productivity is usually pretty ableist and steeped in a hierarchical structure that promotes competition in unhealthy ways.
my wish is that we humans could all work less and instead live in egalitarian socieities void of hierarchies/patriarchy/competition - and the older i get, the more i realize how nefarious these things are and how they seep into every aspect of life, and how at odds i am with these structures not only as a female but as someone who has struggled from ableism and classism, both of which for me were manifested in educational difficulties from a young age which followed me into adulthood. anyway to clarify, i am passionate about academia (which is why i use academic tags on my blog) - but for me its a hobby, and i'll never glorify work, and i'll probably never monetize my passions, thereby avoiding having all the love sucked out of me. but i digress

i think the people getting bent out of shape over me personally choosing to not take payment for the tumblr dumpster fire item are very funny and a little tragic. you have my sincere and deepest condolences that you cannot fathom a creative endeavor sometimes being done just for the joy it brings. sometimes people (me) just don't want to personally monetize their fun constantly.

I know most of you do not like this, so I'm gonna keep it short. If you do not like the topic of patreon, do not read further.
Over the past few months since starting my patreon, I've faced a very large issue, in that the main reason people are now canceling their memberships these days is, that I'm not as active as expected. I can understand that- however, I want to make it clear that without any requests on that platform, I will only post occasional content that I feel like will do better there than on my Tumblr, such as the last two major posts/fics.
My patreon works the same as my Tumblr: interaction is key. TELL ME what you want. What drabbles do you want to read? What fics would you want me to do? Reach out to me, I'm almost always online, if you do not want your request to be public, you can always just tell me, and I will only mention you as 'Anon' on my page. I'm still new to this whole thing, so I'm bound to make mistakes. I'm sorry it's been so rocky.
That said, I still appreciate who decided to stay over time, and I hope that moving forward, the content I post on there will hopefully be worth enough the monthly donation. I'm not saying this to pity-farm or whatever, I'm literally just unsure what else to really do or say. My audience on Patreon is very small, but I still appreciate it nonetheless.
Every month, there will be an exclusive fic on my patreon to read there. I will also post my drafts there for early access. But like mentioned, if you want anything else, you gotta tell me.
I also have the issue that I cannot really 'advertise' my fics that I posted on my patreon here, because people tend to get mad/annoyed at it if I just mention that I have monetized content. I wish I could at least post a single teaser or something, but the backlash is just simply not worth it. I'll probably have tons of anons in my inbox after this one already.
Thank you for your support otherwise, that includes everyone who cancelled their memberships as well. I really appreciate it, and I hope you'll at least stay here on my tumblr to spend time with me, and create some content :)
-Bonny
