Israel Has Created a New Standard for Urban Warfare. Why Will No One Admit It? | by John Spencer
The Israel Defense Forces conducted an operation at al-Shifa hospital in the Gaza Strip to root out Hamas terrorists recently, once again taking unique precautions as it entered the facility to protect the innocent; Israeli media reported that doctors accompanied the forces to help Palestinian patients if needed. They were also reported to be carrying food, water and medical supplies for the civilians inside.
None of this meant anything to Israel's critics, of course, who immediately pounced. The critics, as usual, didn't call out Hamas for using protected facilities like hospitals for its military activity. Nor did they mention the efforts of the IDF to minimize civilian casualties.
In their criticism, Israel's opponents are erasing a remarkable, historic new standard Israel has set. In my long career studying and advising on urban warfare for the U.S. military, I've never known an army to take such measures to attend to the enemy's civilian population, especially while simultaneously combating the enemy in the very same buildings. In fact, by my analysis, Israel has implemented more precautions to prevent civilian harm than any military in history—above and beyond what international law requires and more than the U.S. did in its wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Tumblr media
The predominant Western theory of executing wars, called maneuver warfare, seeks to shatter an enemy morally and physically with surprising, overwhelming force and speed, striking at the political and military centers of gravity so that the enemy is destroyed or surrenders quickly. This was the case in the invasions of Panama in 1989, Afghanistan in 2001, Iraq in 2003 and the failed illegal attempt by Russia to take Ukraine in 2022. In all these cases, no warning or time was given to evacuate cities.
In many ways, Israel has had to abandon this established playbook in order to prevent civilian harm. The IDF has telegraphed almost every move ahead of time so civilians can relocate, nearly always ceding the element of surprise. This has allowed Hamas to reposition its senior leaders (and the Israeli hostages) as needed through the dense urban terrain of Gaza and the miles of underground tunnels it's built.
Hamas fighters, who unlike the IDF don't wear uniforms, have also taken the opportunity to blend into civilian populations as they evacuate. The net effect is that Hamas succeeds in its strategy of creating Palestinian suffering and images of destruction to build international pressure on Israel to stop its operations, therefore ensuring Hamas' survival.
Israel gave warning, in some cases for weeks, for civilians to evacuate the major urban areas of northern Gaza before it launched its ground campaign in the fall. The IDF reported dropping over 7 million flyers, but it also deployed technologies never used anywhere in the world, as I witness firsthand on a recent trip to Gaza and southern Israel.
Israel has made over 70,000 direct phones calls, sent over 13 million text messages and left over 15 million pre-recorded voicemails to notify civilians that they should leave combat areas, where they should go, and what route they should take. They deployed drones with speakers and dropped giant speakers by parachute that began broadcasting for civilians to leave combat areas once they hit the ground. They announced and conducted daily pauses of all operations to allow any civilians left in combat areas to evacuate.
These measures were effective. Israel was able to evacuate upwards of 85 percent of the urban areas in northern Gaza before the heaviest fighting began. This is actually consistent with my research on urban warfare history that shows that no matter the effort, about 10 percent of populations stay.
As the war raged on, Israel began giving out its military maps to civilians so they could conduct localized evacuations. This, too, has never been done in war. During my recent visit to Khan Yunis, Gaza, and the IDF civilian harm mitigation unit in southern Israel, I observed as the army began using these maps to communicate each day where the IDF would be operating so civilians in other areas would stay out of harm's way.
I saw that the IDF even tracked the population in real time down to a few-block radius using drone and satellite imagery and cell phone presence and building damage assessments to avoid hitting civilians. The New York Times reported in January that the daily civilian death toll had more than halved in the previous month and was down almost two-thirds from its peak.
Of course, the true number of Gaza civilian deaths is unknown. The current Hamas-supplied estimate of over 31,000 does not acknowledge a single combatant death (nor any deaths due to the misfiring of its own rockets or other friendly fire). The IDF estimates it has killed about 13,000 Hamas operatives, a number I believe credible partly because I believe the armed forces of a democratic American ally over a terrorist regime, but also because of the size of Hamas fighters assigned to areas that were cleared and having observed the weapons used, the state of Hamas' tunnels and other aspects of the combat.
That would mean some 18,000 civilians have died in Gaza, a ratio of roughly 1 combatant to 1.5 civilians. Given Hamas' likely inflation of the death count, the real figure could be closer to 1 to 1. Either way, the number would be historically low for modern urban warfare.
The UN, EU and other sources estimate that civilians usually account for 80 percent to 90 percent of casualties, or a 1:9 ratio, in modern war (though this does mix all types of wars). In the 2016-2017 Battle of Mosul, a battle supervised by the U.S. that used the world's most powerful airpower resources, some 10,000 civilians were killed compared to roughly 4,000 ISIS terrorists.
And yet, analysts who should know better are still engaging in condemnation of the IDF based on the level of destruction that's still occurred—destruction that is unavoidable against an enemy that embeds in a vast tunnel system under civilian sites in dense urban terrain. This effects-based condemnation or criticism is not how the laws of war work, or violations determined. These and other analysts say the destruction and civilian causalities must either stop or be avoided in an alternative form of warfare.
Ironically, the careful approach Israel has taken may have actually led to more destruction; since the IDF giving warnings and conducting evacuations help Hamas survive, it ultimately prolongs the war and, with it, its devastation.
Israel has not created a gold standard in civilian harm mitigation in war. That implies there is a standard in civilian casualties in war that is acceptable or not acceptable; that zero civilian deaths in war is remotely possible and should be the goal; that there is a set civilian-to-combatant ratio in war no matter the context or tactics of the enemy. But all available evidence shows that Israel has followed the laws of war, legal obligations, best practices in civilian harm mitigation and still found a way to reduce civilian casualties to historically low levels.
Those calling for Israel to find an alternative to inflicting civilian casualties to lower amounts (like zero) should be honest that this alternative would leave the Israeli hostages in captivity and allow Hamas to survive the war. The alternative to a nation's survival cannot be a path to extinction.
John Spencer is chair of urban warfare studies at the Modern War Institute (MWI) at West Point, codirector of MWI's Urban Warfare Project and host of the "Urban Warfare Project Podcast." He served for 25 years as an infantry soldier, which included two combat tours in Iraq. He is the author of the book "Connected Soldiers: Life, Leadership, and Social Connection in Modern War" and co-author of "Understanding Urban Warfare."

Honestly, urban and suburban horror is so under utilized
Getting lost in a parking lot full of endless rows and columns of cars. You can't find yours, you don't know how long you've been walking. You keep seeing cars that you think are yours, but they don't open when you try your keys. You press the horn button on your fob, but can't tell which direction the faint honking is coming from. The stalls are all full.
A grocery store late at night. No other shoppers are there. It's dark outside and yours is the only car in the parking lot. The aisles are filled with brands you don't recognize, but seem oddly familiar, all knock offs of each other. It's too cold. Your cart has a squeaky wheel. The cashier is the only other person in the store. They don't make eye contact. You don't remember what you came in for.
You're taking the garbage out late at night. Your elevator doesn't work so you have to take the stairs. The dumpster smells, and there is fluid on the ground beside it. You don't want to think about what it could be. You hear noises down the alley. You toss the bag into the dumpster, and run to the door. You fumble your keys and take longer to get in. You slam the door and lock it. The lightbulb flickers in the lobby.
Rows and rows and rows and rows of identical houses. You don't know how you got into this neighborhood, you can't afford any of the houses here. They all look the same, white square houses, white picket fences, perfectly even and manicured lawns. A good neighborhood. A nice place to raise your kids. There are no kids. The weather is nice, the sun is shining, they should be outside. You drive your used car, looking for a turn off to the exit, but there isn't any. Just endless white square houses, white picket fences, perfectly even and manicured lawns. You're sure you passed this area before, but there are no house numbers and they all look the same. The sun is shining and there is not a cloud in the sky. Or another living creature in sight.
You're on the bus. Surrounded by people, you stare at your phone and ignore them. More people get on. Your stop is coming soon. More people get on. You sit at the back of the bus to avoid conversation. More people get on. Someone bumps into you, and you apologize to them, but you're not sure why. They don't acknowledge you. More people get on. Everyone is staring at their phones, ignoring each other. Your stop is next. You try to stand up to get to the exit, but there are people in the way. You can't get to the button to let the driver know you need to get off. You try to get to the door, but there are so many people in the way you can't move. The bus slows to a stop, and you try to push your way to the exit, but the bus is too packed. The doors open, but you can't leave, and nobody hears you when you ask them to move. More people get on.
You walk downtown. You pass a billboard advertising a product you've never heard of. You keep walking, passing flyers, billboards, screens, all selling things. Things to make you prettier. Smarter. More successful. A whole new person. A new person to fit into society with all the other people, but only if you spend money. For just a few dollars, you can have a better life with our product. You need our product. You would be so happy if only you had our product. Look at all these people in our advertisement, aren't they happy? Don't you want to be like them? You could be if only you just had our product. You can't afford any of them.
You're in a crowd of people, walking the sidewalk. You have your earbuds in. You feel someone watching you. You casually glance around, to try to catch someone staring. You can't pick out individual faces among the hundreds of other people. You continue on your way, thinking you imagined it. You imagine you hear footsteps, and walk faster. The feeling doesn't go away.
Your air conditioner is broken. You told your landlord, he said he'll fix it. It's been days. The air is hot and muggy. Leaving the windows open doesn't help the heavy feeling. The air from outside is just as warm, and carries the scents from the city. There should be sounds coming from outside, but the city is silent.
You're walking at night. You can't see even a single star.

okay but imagine yan! tighnari's and reader's fox daughter wanting to be a dancer in Zubayr Theater with Nilou. When their daughter's first performance happened there are some boys trying to court their daughter. Imagine father Tighnari's rage when he saw boys after watching the performance with his obedient housewife 😭 (ps: I just need Tighnari and y/n sweet and random moments plss)
Tumblr media
This is so cute! love yandere family fluff!! So we got an overprotective dad tighnari who supports his daughter dancing but doesn't allow those brats to get close to his daughter😭
TW: yandere, (not mentioned here but actually) kidnapping, overprotective dad tighnari
yandere Tighnari breeding reader that rejects them An old classmate encourages you to continue your studies while taking care of baby foxes reader hinting that they weren't happy with the marriage by telling stories but their children snitched Yandere Tighnari and other babies are jealous of their new sibling
When the baby foxes are reading encyclopedia, patrolling with papa, observing the starry sky and insects, your little fox daughter has shown different talents - the sounds of nature are her favorite melody. She likes to dance in the water and in the forest. Tighnari was worried that his young daughter might be attacked by some wild animals, but it turned out that some wild animals would not attack her, but stopped to watch her dance. After the dance, she always runs into your arms and calls "Mama". You served her pastries and juice and hugged her tiny frame.
One day, your precious daughter came home with a flyer for Zubayr Theater and was bouncing around the living room. She said that she wants to go to Sumeru City and join Zubayr Theater! She wants to be a dancer like sister Nilou in the leaflet!
Tighnari doesn't want the fox babies to go to the city because he knows that the ears of foxes are too sensitive, and the lively sound of the Grand Bazaar is a nuisance to the foxes. Moreover, the urban environment is more complex than the forest. Babies are still too young to face this. Most of all, he hates the idea that you or any kid will leave him. However, Tighnari changed his mind as soon as he saw her teary face, so the two of you accompanied her to the Zubayr Theater.
Nilou covers her mouth in surprise as soon as she meets your baby fox daughter - the furry ears and tail are super cute!! She learns about your daughter's dream of being a dancer and how hard she has worked to make it happen. She smiled and said that she can teach her, and she is looking forward to the little new star of Zubayr Theater!
After months of training, your daughter is performing in public for the first time. On the way, you held Tighnari's hand tightly, telling him your worries and anxieties, and Tighnari reassured you softly that nothing bad would happen. The two of you are acting like every normal couple and parent, and it doesn't even occur to you that going to the city is your chance to escape.
This dance performance is choreographed on the theme of the moon elves. The dancing on the stage seems to be like elves dancing on the mysterious lake. You lean on Tighnari's shoulder with tears in your eyes, looking at the tiny figure and realizing how much she's grown now. And Tighnari smiles proudly, nods occasionally, and talks to you about the show.
After the performance, the two of you thank Mr. Zubayr for giving your daughter the opportunity to perform and train. When you return to the venue, you see several boys surrounding your baby fox girl. "Your performance was so good", "Are you a new dancer at Zubayr Theater?", "Your ears and tail…" . One of them even shyly offered her a flower, hoping she would take it. Tighnari stared at the boys, furious - He didn't realize that his daughter was of an age where she might have suitors! His gaze frightened the children, who flinched but said they would come to play with her tomorrow. You feel the hostility of your husband, smirk and pat him on the back - they are just a bunch of kids! It is normal for little kids to show affection and even crush to other kids.
Tighnari didn't think so. He gave you a glare because you weren't on his side - you probably wouldn't have laughed so hard if you knew you'd be punished after going home. But before that, he had to throw away the flower in the fox daughter's hand.

Knuckles’ repeating phrase being “I don’t need the details, just tell me who to smash” has not been sitting right with me. It feels pulled right out of those portrayals that paint Knuckles as nothing more than the angry dumb, punchy guy.
And it’s especially weird when you consider the shatter verse versions of him.
Like to me Renegade Knucks feels like the regular Knuckles put through an urban an cynical filter. (This kinda makes him sit in the uncanny valley for me.) Yes, he does get angry, but all of them are at reasonable points and mostly tied to people breaking his and others trust, but we see he’s still willing to give sonic multiple chances and can be pretty chill (as chill as someone can be In an Eggman ruled dystopia)
I don’t have as much to say in Gnarly, but he can be taken as Knuckles’ the side of him that struggles with trusting others in a personal vulnerability sense and all the stress he must feel with the threat of people coming after the m.e turned up to the extreme.
And then there’s Dread. I could go on and on about how much I love Dread as a mirror self ‘this is who Knuckles is not’ He is introduced as someone overly cheerful with no sense of duty or responsibility. Completely the opposite to Knuckles who’s diligence to his role is one of his core characteristics and how it often leads to him being in a bad mood. Then Dread is shown to be a coward, and by Sonic’s reaction this is clearly meant to be a ‘this ain’t Knuckles’ moment. Then Dread goes and abandons the crew on a sinking boat, the group has multiple flyers, they definitely could have worked something out to get everyone to safety, but no. Dread is selfish and takes it for himself, and yet again in the scene this is called out as ‘not a Knuckles thing’ and once he comes back sonic has the line of ‘not abandoning his crew’ and Dread immediately contradicting that with the ‘not for his crew’ line with a sinister grin and a shot that lingers just long enough to feel off.
So then what’s with this line?
I am so hoping what I’m I’ve come up with is intentional and not me looking deeper than the writers did
So in Sonic prime Sonic’s thoughts on Knuckles are interesting. There the running gag of ‘I’ll even take Knuckles.’ Running joke playing to their rivalry? Yeah, maybe. But could also be to show that Sonic doesn’t know Knuckles that well. Plus when Sonic’s talking about his friends all he can say is “Knuckles and his… Knuckles.” When he even comes up for things for Rouge and then there’s there’s him going that ‘he’s even happy to see knuckles’ when in the ghosty place.
Here’s my thoughts. Those lines aren’t meant to be a representation on the characters, but instead they what Sonic’s perception of them is.
I have clearer thoughts on some of these, but others are a bit shaky
“As long as I’m around you’ll always have a wingman” - To Sonic Tails is his little buddy, a sidekick, the way he interacts with Nine seems to support this.
“The forest is the most beautiful place on earth” - he sees Amy as someone who’s really sweet and kind
“You may not like the way I do things but I get things done.” - Him seeing Rouge being willing to steal
“No problem sonic” - a very npc line. How well does he really know Big
And that brings us back to Knuckles
His line can fit really well if Sonic doesn’t really know him that well and hasn’t got a chance to get to know the side of Knuckles that he keeps yo himself.
Please please please let this be what’s going on here. They’ve been getting him so good elsewhere I’d hate for them to screw him up here.

Creme De La Creme: Orlando.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Jack, Jack, Jackman wake up” you nudged his shoulder, knowing that he needed to shower before the flight.
“Hmmm?” He sleepily mumbled.
“Get up and shower baby, we can’t miss the flight” You kissed him and made sure that he was going to get out of bed before leaving to go to the kitchen to make everyone breakfast since you were the only one awake and ready.
Both he and Urban spent the night at yours and Laylas, your place was closer to the airport anyway.
After everybody ate, Neelam sent a car to pick the four of you up and you were on your way to the airport.
****
“Is this a long flight?” Urban asked Neelam as you waited in the TSA line together. She was looking over all of the travel arrangements on her phone.
“About an hour and a half,” she responded without looking up.
When you were sitting in your seat on the plane, everything finally felt real. You were so proud of your boyfriend, and the fact that he was going on a tour was a big deal but he also wanted you to come and that was an even bigger deal. You were upset that you couldn’t be there for every tour date but he understood.
You let Jack have the window seat. “Are you sure?” He asked for the millionth time.
“Yes! This is a big moment, enjoy the view.” You smiled as he nodded happily. “Can I take a picture of you?”
He said yes and posed for the camera, you knew you’d want to frame this someday.
“So Orlando tonight, St. Petersburg tomorrow, Miami on Friday and then you fly home Sunday morning?”
“Mhm, and your next show isn’t until Tuesday right?” You tried to keep up with everything he’s told you so far.
“VMAS is on Sunday and the Met Gala is Monday” he reminded you.
“What do people even do at the Met?” You asked before being interrupted by the flight attendant's demonstration.
“I think they just get dressed up to eat together? I have no idea” he whispered as he leaned into you.
You turned to look at Layla and Urban who are sat in the row across from you, you knew that Layla was a nervous flyer, so you were going to ask her if she was okay but you realize that she and Urban were already holding hands anyway. You motioned with your eyes for Jack to look at them, he leaned forward and smiled as he saw their hands.
When you got to the hotel, you and Jack went to his hotel room. Urban and Layla went to theirs and Neelam made sure everyone was aware of the time, noting there were only a few hours before Jack needed to be at the venue.
Jack placed both yours and his suitcase down inside the closet in his room.
“Thanks for carrying that baby, you didn’t have to” You smiled and he just shook his head.
“No problem.” He plopped down on the bed, laying on his back.
“Tired?”
“My back hurts” he groaned. “It’s been hurting a lot lately from rehearsals and then the plane ride didn’t help.”
“Lay on your stomach, I got you. I’ve been told if I didn’t rap I would be a good masseuse” you joked and he let out a chuckle.
“That was corny” he kissed you and you giggled against his lips, helping him take his shirt off.
You straddled him from behind, focusing on his shoulder blades first. “Are you excited to finally start the tour?”
“Excited and nervous to see how it all plays out” he confessed as you continued to rub his back.
He let out a grunt. “That feels good, can you stay on that spot?”
You continued to massage him for a while until he started to fall asleep. “Baby, take a nap. I’m going to get ready” You kissed his back and covered him with a blanket.
You got ready, fixing your makeup and hair. Layla eventually called your phone and you closed the bathroom door not to wake Jack.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Did you and Jack eat yet? We are going to order food, I’ll text you a menu and bring it to your room so we can all eat?”
“Sounds good, I’ll wake him up and ask what he wants”
****
When you got to the venue you listened to sound check, and watched as the stage was set up. There were a few fans outside already waiting but luckily you entered the venue from the back and remained undetected.
Neelam made sure there was an area backstage for you and Layla that way you’d be able to watch without anyone seeing you, and asking questions.
Urban took some photos of the crowd as they continued to line up against the barricade and some photos of the stage set up.
When the venue started to fill up, Jack changed into his performance outfit and you could see his nerves growing. He was more or less concerned about showing off in front of you but he didn’t want to admit that just yet.
“You’re going to do amazing baby” You kissed him as his last opening act finished up.
Jack opened with ‘Tyler Herro’ and hearing the crowd go wild for him instantly made you emotional.
“This is crazy!” You giggled as you turned to Layla who was jumping up and down with you, rapping every word.
When it was time for Jack to stand on the roof of his cafe set he had to walk backstage to climb some stairs and get on top of it. He winked at you as you mouthed to him to be careful.
By the time Jack was halfway through the show you and Layla were both sweaty and exhausted. Urban had snuck a few photos and Neelam recorded you to show Jack, knowing how impressed he’d be that you knew every word.
Jack was nearly almost done with his set list when you heard the opening chords to ‘Rendezvous’ begin to play. You started to giggle, turning to Layla to tell her about the joke you had made to Jack earlier using one of his lyrics to this song.
“That man is going to think of you every time he performs this one now” she joked and you couldn’t help but smile.
“I hope so” You put your hand over your mouth, trying to hide the obnoxiously goofy grin plastered across your face.
When ‘Keep it light’ started to play you started to get a lump in your throat, recalling a deep conversation you had with Jack.
A few months ago, you and Jack were talking about his album and he explained to you everything that went into it, since you met shortly after it had been released You weren’t sure what all went into it.
He told you all about long studio nights, therapy sessions, and just writing out his thoughts. This was the first time he had really been vulnerable with you, listening to him talk about his art made you feel closer to him.
That’s when you knew.
You knew you loved him, when he sat across from you on your bed. He was fidgeting with the drawstrings on his shorts, nervously but you found it endearing. He was explaining how ‘keep it light’ was slept on, but how he felt most connected to it. He explained how he surprised Maggie by using her voice at the end of the song.
He got emotional talking about his family, and explaining that his mom always told him to “absorb moments.” There was a certain twinkle in his eye, a vibrato in his voice, that made you so sure.
“Layla, I’m going to tell him I love him tonight” you confessed as Jack continued to perform.
“What?” She turned to you wide-eyed and excited, she mentally recalled her conversation with Urban at the Derby.
“I can’t hold it in any longer, and watching him perform tonight has me in awe of him” You felt your face grow warm, and you tried to hide it.
“Don’t be shy now!” She giggled as she pried your hands away from your cheeks.
“If he doesn’t feel the same we might have to cut this trip short” you mumbled, slightly panicked.
“Is he almost done? What’s left on the setlist?” Layla questioned knowing you had it saved in your phone.
“He has two more songs” you swallowed, knowing this was about to feel like the longest two songs in the world.
“Are you going to tell him in private or?”
“I don’t know, I feel like it’s just going to fly out of my mouth” you joked but you were so nervous you felt it could be half true.
When Jack finally got off stage, all of you were quickly rushed to the van, being escorted by security. Jack held your hand knowing that his team (who already knew about you) were the only ones around.
The drive back to the hotel felt long, everyone was giving Jack praises, including you. He was happy, and you were growing more and more nervous, overthinking was definitely starting to change your mind.
“Baby, I have to say something” you nervously choked out as everyone else had finally moved on to their own side conversations.
“Yeah?” His eyes darted left and right, trying to read your facial expression with zero luck. “Did you not like the show?”
You giggled nervously at his question, and his face softened in relief.
“I loved the show!”
“What was your favorite part?” He was sitting beside you, his thigh against yours. He turned his full attention to you, looking you directly in the eyes now.
“I mean everything?” You paused looking down and avoiding his gaze for a moment.
“Everything huh?” He laughed, his tongue visible against his cheek. He could tell you were holding back and it made him nervous.
You pulled up to the hotel, and everyone was starting to file out of the van. You and Jack were the last to get out, it was late so neither one of you thought twice about hiding your relationship from the world.
Jack grabbed your hand as you walked down the hotel hallway.
“Everything huh?” Jack repeated himself as the two of you entered your shared hotel room. “There wasn’t a specific part you liked most?”
“I mean…” you plopped down on the bed. “I had a specific part that stood out to me.”
“You’re killing me! What is it?” He stood in front of you, looking down at you as you looked up and into his baby-blue eyes.
“My favorite part was watching the man I love do the thing he loves” you nervously replied.
Jack froze, wondering if he was still riding the high of his show and hallucinating or if you just confessed that you loved him.
You took his silence as a rejection, standing up immediately and profusely apologizing and nervously rambling as you walked over to your suitcase.
“Y/N, Sweetheart” his voice was soft and calm, and the corners of his mouth slightly turned into a smile. He walked over to you, and you realized then that he felt it too.
“I love you too, I’ve been wanting to say it but I was too scared that I’d scare you away and I’m so relieved you said it first” he laughed and you wrapped your arms around him before he bent down to kiss you.
“I love you, I love you, I love you,” he said between kisses, and the wave of nervousness had left you completely.

Roll Up with the Sacred Scarab
The sacred scarab (Scarabaeus sacer) is perhaps the most famous of all dung beetles as a symbol of worship by ancient Egyptians. Outside its godly role, this species can be found throughout northern Africa, as well as southern Europe and into western Asia as far as India. In Africa it inhabits both deserts and scrubland, as well as agricultural areas where food is abundant, while in Europe the sacred scarab stays more towards the coast in dunes and marshes.
Aside from its well-known association with religion, the sacred scarab is known best for its association with dung. When a source has been found, individuals roll it into tightly compressed balls known as telecoprids, which can weigh up to ten times their size. These telecoprids are then rolled with the hind legs to an underground chamber where S. sacer strains out and feeds on nutrient-rich fluids, molds, and undigested particles from the ball over several days. In addition to its role as a nutrient recycler, the sacred scarab is also an important source of food for many small mammals, reptiles, and birds.
In its native range, the sacred scarab will mate year-round provided food is abdunant. Males and females work together to form and move a dung ball back to the underground nest; it is during this stage that males will fight each other for control of the ball, while the female will simply follow wherever the telecoprid goes. Once in the next, male and female briefly copulate before the male departs to search for another mate. The female then sculpts the dung ball into a pear shape and lays a single egg in the narrower end, which is then sealed. Her job done, she too leaves to seek out another partner and repeat the process, laying over a dozen eggs in her lifetime.
After a week or two, a single larva emerges from the egg and begins feeding on the dung around it. Over the next 3 months, it will molt up to three times before forming a pupa. About a month later, a fully mature adult emerges and burrows its way to the surface to find a fresh source of food and potential mates. Unlike many beetle species, the sacred scarab is an adept flyer, and will often use its wings to travel between food sources as opposed to walking.
Though the sacred scarab may seem ornate in Egyptian hieroglyphics and jewelry, the species itself is quite plain. Individuals are completely black, and both sexes are indistinguishable from each other. Individuals can range from 1.9 to 4.0 cm (0.7 to 1.6 in) long, and weigh up to 2 g (0.07 oz). One interesting feature is their front feet; unlike other dung beetles, S. sacer doesn't have any. Instead they only have a vestigial claw-like structure that can be used for digging.
Conservation status: This species has not been evaluated by the IUCN, but due to its large population size and adaptability to urban and agricultural expanstion it is considered relatively stable.
