I thought up an AU involving these pics from Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/RWBY/comments/11w06j8/team_rwby_with_a_twist_art_by_coconuthound
Team Rwby but their weapons swapped each others.
(Enjoy the drabble as a start to something that... I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with it yet. I just wanted to do something that wasnt in Beacon for an au like this.)
“Weiss!” Ruby called out as she stabbed into a grimm with her sword. “Now would be a good time for a wall!”
Weiss nodded as one of the dust crystals on the knuckle of her gauntlet started to glow and she slammed the claws of her glove into the ground. A smile crossed her lips as ice started to jut out of the ground, separating the grimm that had started to surround them. “Yang! Your turn!”
“With pleasure!” Yang sliced through the grimm with her rapier, quickly moving to keep from getting hit. “Blake! Time to finish this!”
Blake pulled her scythe back and jumped at the larger of the grimm, using her semblance to create a double of herself for a bit more height. With a smile, she twisted her body to spin down to the grimm, slicing through with her blade like a saw. “How many are left?”
“Not much more!” Ruby burst into a cloud of petals and rushed around the remaining grimm, wrapping the ribbon of her weapon around one of the grimm. She finally reformed and pulled on the ribbon to offset the grimm before launching into a strike of gunshots to finish them off. Once the smoke of the grimm cleared, she dropped to the ground and sighed. “Done…”
Weiss rolled her eyes and let her gauntlets form back to the gloves and bangles that she kept them as. “Dont be so dramatic. You know this was child’s play for us.”
“Maybe, but doesnt make it any less tiring.” Ruby sheathed her blade and pulled out her scroll to complete the bounty. “Besides, that’s the fourth time this month there’s been that many grimm near a village. Something doesnt feel right.”
Blake folded up her scythe and put it on her back, her ears twitching as she listened for anything nearby. “And you already have a plan, dont you?”
“Yes. Kinda…” Ruby sighed. “Well… more like… half a plan. We need to get more information, but I’m still not sure what we’re supposed to be looking for.” She started to pace around the forest clearing, her hand moved to her belt to instinctively mess with her emblem as spoke. “None of this makes any sense! Grimm arent dumb, but they dont mass up like this without something giving orders. But there’s nothing around these grimm. No tech pulling them together, no one trying to control them or give them orders…”
Yang sat down on a fallen log and started to clean the blade of her rapier. “Maybe we should talk to Ozpin-”
“No!” Ruby stopped in her tracks and took a breath to calm herself. “We need to leave him out of this.”
“Why?” Weiss asked. “Ever since we graduated Beacon, he’s done nothing but provide us with everything we could ever need to get our missions done. He’s helped upgrade our weapons, made sure we have more than enough dust, funds us for everything we’ll need including food and lodging, provides us all of our transportation… If we keep ignoring his calls or refuse to come to him for answers, at what point will he finally have enough and cut us off?”
“Dont forget, he did bend a lot of rules for us,” Blake added. “Afterall, you wouldnt have been a student as early as you were without him and we wouldnt have been a team.”
Ruby pinched the bridge of her nose and grumbled a bit. “I know.” She pulled her hand away and started to run through her scroll again. “Alright, I’ll… I’ll see what he knows. But I’m not happy about it.”
Weiss watched her partner walk off and slowly sat down. “Is Ruby doing okay?”
Yang nodded and finally put her blade away. “Ever since she found out that mom went missing while on a mission for Ozpin, she’s been doing her best to avoid him. She cant keep avoiding him and this might be for the best.”
Weiss nodded slowly and waited for Ruby to come back. “As long as we’re not pushing her too hard.”

Look okay I just wanna swap out one of the uninspired weapons with a hula hoop. Like maybe the pig or the dog. I mean, most of the weapons are toys/non-traditional weapons. And you can do so many creative moves with a hula hoop! Like
Catch their arms/legs and pull their attack off course
Put them inside it and pull/push them, throwing off their defense while you attack
Yeeting it into their face and it just bounces back and you catch it
Pull both sides together and let it snap back into their face
Do the walk the dog trick to fake them out, and then grabbing the hoop and slamming it into them
Okay but like. Imaging them hula hooping, then hopping up and using their leg to keep it going, and then doing a front flip heel kick to slam it into their head

In RWBY weapons are a part of a person, an extension of yourself, as Ruby puts it in V1. So, a weapon can say a lot about a person in how it appears and what it's used for.
Looking at Crescent Rose compared to our other main characters' weapons and it's immediately one that stands out from the size alone, it immediately draws our attention, it usually takes up the screen.
Like Ruby, it's striking, awe inspiring and larger than life. It's beautiful, resilient and strong, but evolves to be more adaptable during the Atlas Arc, when Ruby herself has to be more flexible and think outside the box, and her worldview is consistently challenged. It's also very easily the most intricate and complicated design, by her own admission:
"I guess I did go a little overboard in designing it..."
Which, while on the surface means it looks cool and flashy, it's also incredibly complex, just like Ruby.
And as we know from V9, a weapon like that would also be a heavy one to carry at all times too, and it weighs on her. Just like being "Ruby Rose" means to shoulder all the responsibilities and entanglements that come with being who she is, a huntress, a leader, a hero, a spark of hope and light who inspires others. In the end her resolve as a huntress and in who she is, and her purpose, is renewed and stronger than ever before, and wields her weapon once more with confidence.
That doesn't mean her burdens have gotten any lighter though, in fact upon returning to Vacuo, because of her message, all of humanity is now looking to her. No matter how strong, confident and resolved she is, that's a heavy weight for one person to carry alone.
Which brings me to Oscar's weapon, the Long Memory. Which is a cane, smaller, simple and straightforward, but has it's own hidden light stored inside. A cane is meant to take someone's weight by design, that's it's purpose. To be something that's leant on as a crutch when you're hurting to alleviate the pain by taking the pressure off yourself, so moving forward is made easier. Because everyone needs that support sometimes and it's okay to be weak, it doesn't make you lesser, it just makes you human. And it is incredibly human for us to care for and lean on one another for support. That vulnerability leads to our greatest strength as humans.
The one who carries the heaviest weapon vs The one who has a weapon that can be leant on to take pressure off yourself. Ruby who carries a heavy burden and Oscar being someone that can be leant on for support. ooooooohhhh the cymbal ism of it all.
